RESUMO

Non-invasive computed tomography (CT) of an adult sand tiger shark Carcharias taurus Rafinesque, 1810 is used to provide an interactive three-dimensional 'general' shark (Selachimorpha) anatomy atlas. Given its post-cranial body morphology, the sand tiger shark appeared to be a well-chosen candidate and through comparison of the sand tiger shark with several other representatives of all eight established orders of sharks, we confirm that the relatively large degree of mineralization of the endoskeleton, along with the overall size, makes the sand tiger shark an ideal candidate for skeletal segmentation and construction of a skeletal atlas using conventional CT. This atlas both increases accessibility to the internal morphological features of the sand tiger shark and provides a more generalized overview of the skeletal anatomy of sharks and can aid as a supplement to destructive fresh dissection of specimens in the future and the construction of future skeletal atlases of other less mineralized sharks.

BACKGROUND: Haemodynamics plays an important role in the development of vascular disease. There is currently a lack of studies evaluating the characteristics and affecting factors of the iliac vein haemodynamics in clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to use 4D flow MRI to explore the haemodynamic characteristics of iliac veins and its affecting factors in an asymptomatic population. METHODS: Thirty consecutive volunteers without venous-related symptoms or signs underwent four-dimensional postprocessing of their MRI images. Relevant parameters, the demographic data, common iliac vein-inferior vena cava angle, iliac vein area, tortuosity, iliac vein mean flow, mean velocity was computed and analysed. T tests and Spearman's tests were used for analysing. A P value of 0.05 or less was considered significant. RESULTS: Height and iliac vein area were positively correlated with flow, while degree of stenosis, and common iliac-inferior vena cava angle were negatively correlated with that. Degree of stenosis was positively correlated with velocity, but the common iliac-inferior vena cava angle and iliac vein tortuosity were negatively correlated with that. The mean flow and velocity of iliac veins in females were lower than males. The mean flow and velocity of the left iliac veins were lower than those of the right. CONCLUSION: The height, gender, tortuosity, degree of stenosis, common iliac vein-inferior vena cava angle of the iliac vein are important factors that affect flow and velocity of the iliac veins. There were differences in haemodynamic parameters of the bilateral iliac veins.

BACKGROUND: In complex teeth like maxillary premolars, endodontic treatment success depends on a complete comprehension of root canal anatomy. The research on mandibular premolars' root canal anatomy has been extensive and well-documented in existing literature. However, there appears to be a notable gap in available data concerning the root canal anatomy of maxillary premolars. This study aimed to explore the root canal morphology of maxillary premolars using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging, considering age and gender variations. METHODS: From 500 patient CBCT scans, 787 maxillary premolar teeth were evaluated. The sample was divided by gender and age (10-20, 21-30, 31-40, 41-50, 51-60, and 61 years and older). Ahmed et al. classification system was used to record root canal morphology. RESULTS: The most frequent classifications for right maxillary 1st premolars were 2MPM1 B1 L1 (39.03%) and 1MPM1 (2.81%), while the most frequent classifications for right maxillary 2nd premolars were 2MPM1 B1 L1 (39.08%) and 1MPM1 (17.85%). Most of the premolars typically had two roots (left maxillary first premolars: 81.5%, left maxillary second premolars: 82.7%, right maxillary first premolars: 74.4%, right maxillary second premolars: 75.7%). Left and right maxillary 1st premolars for classes 1MPM1 and 1MPM1-2-1 showed significant gender differences. For classifications 1MPM1 and 1MPM1-2-1, age-related changes were seen in the left and right maxillary first premolars. CONCLUSION: This study provides novel insights into the root canal anatomy of maxillary premolars within the Saudi population, addressing a notable gap in the literature specific to this demographic. Through CBCT imaging and analysis of large sample sizes, the complex and diverse nature of root canal morphology in these teeth among Saudi individuals is elucidated. The findings underscore the importance of CBCT imaging in precise treatment planning and decision-making tailored to the Saudi population. Consideration of age and gender-related variations further enhances understanding and aids in personalized endodontic interventions within this demographic.

PURPOSE: The chordae Willisii (CWs), trabecular projections into the lumen of the dural sinuses, are not well understood. We aimed to explore them using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: Eighty-five patients underwent volumetric contrast-enhanced MRI, while another 30 underwent a fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) sequence in the coronal section. RESULTS: The CWs were detected as linear filling defects lying in the dural sinuses, adjacent to the surrounding dura mater. They were found in the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) in 68.2% of the patients, most frequently in the middle third, with laminar appearance. In 27.1% of the patients, the CWs divided the SSS lumen into separate channels. The CWs were identified in the transverse sinus, transverse-sigmoid sinus junctional area and sigmoid sinus, and straight sinus in 54.1, 47.1, and 8.2%, respectively. On the FLAIR images, dural septi partially dividing the SSS lumen were identified in all patients. In addition, in 73.3% of the patients, fine linear structures were observed in the lumen with inconstant arrangements. CONCLUSIONS: The CWs may be constant structures distributed over the lumen of the intracranial dural sinuses. Contrast-enhanced MRI may be useful for detecting laminar CWs. The FLAIR sequence may be advantageous for delineating the dural septi projecting into the lumen of the dural sinuses.

Globally, gall-forming insects significantly contribute to the degradation of desert ecosystems. Recent studies have demonstrated that Haloxylon persicum suffers less damage from gall-formers compared to Haloxylon aphyllum. However, the mechanisms driving the long-term metabolic responses of these species to gall-forming biotic stress in their natural environment remain unclear. The current study comparatively analyzes the anatomical features and metabolomic changes in H. aphyllum and H. persicum damaged by gall-forming insects. This research aimed to uncover potential metabolic tolerance mechanisms through GC-MS analysis. The study findings indicate that gall-forming insects cause a reduction in nearly all the anatomical structures of Haloxylon shoots, with the effects being less severe in H. persicum than in H. aphyllum. Thus, the metabolic pathways responsible for the biosynthesis of biologically active substances that enhance resistance to gall inducers were different, specifically in H. aphyllum-the biosynthesis of fatty acids (+their derivatives) and γ-tocopherol (vitamin E) and H. persicum-the biosynthesis of fatty acids (+their derivatives), dialkyl ethers, carbohydrates (+their derivatives), aromatic acid derivatives, phytosterols, γ-tocopherol (vitamin E), phenols, and terpenoids. The results suggest that the modulation of metabolic pathways under biotic stress plays a crucial role in the enhanced survival and growth of H. persicum.

Background: Computed tomographic angiography (CTA) is rarely used to explore the effect of moyamoya disease (MMD) on the basilar artery (BA) and its adjacent arteries. Methods: Participants were divided into a control group and an MMD group. The relevant parameters were measured. Statistical analyses included the t-test, chi-squared test, and linear regression analysis. Results: In the control group of 100 healthy people, the average age was 54.51 ± 13.40 years, and the ratio of males to females was 0.89:1. In the MMD group of 100 patients, the average age was 53.95 ± 11.31 years, and the ratio of males to females was 1.13:1. In the MMD group, the CTA score of the anterior circulation of the bilateral hemispheres was 7.57 ± 2.36. According to the statistical analyses, (1) in the control group, the BA apex tended to lean to the right in healthy participants; (2) in the MMD group, the BA was closer to the midline, and the angle between the BA and anterior inferior cerebellar artery was reduced, indicating that the BA was relatively elevated; (3) in the MMD group, the diameters of the BA, PCA and vertebral artery were larger than those in the control group; and (4) MMD patients with posterior cerebral atery (PCA) involvement had higher CTA scores of the anterior circulation. Conclusions: MMD can cause the BA to move toward the midline and upward and enlarge major vessels of the posterior circulation. The PCA tends to be involved in MMD patients with higher CTA scores in the anterior circulation.

BACKGROUND: Analysing the literature about the reproductive anatomy on New World Primates, one can see the need of standardisation on the description methods and, more importantly, the lack of detailed information. The problem is aggravated by the difficult access to specimens of the endangered species such as Brachyteles sp. This paper's objective was to extend knowledge on the male reproductive anatomy of these primates. The testis and funiculus spermaticus of Brachyteles are described in detail. METHODS: We utilised one individual of Brachyteles arachnoides, two hybrids (B. arachnoides × Brachyteles hypoxanthus) and photographs of the testis of a third fresh specimen of a hybrid individual. RESULTS: The septum formed by tunica dartos adheres to the testis and separates the scrotum in two testicular cavities. Passed the spermatic cord, the external spermatic fascia continues with the tunica dartos, covering the cranial half of the testis. The fascia cremasterica divides itself in bundles of fibres and forms loops around the testicles creating a sac like structure that seems to be unique among Neotropical Primates. The appendix testis is described for the first time in platyrrhini. It is presented as a sessile structure in the extremitas capitata of the testis. Previous literature on the reproductive anatomy of platyrrhini is limited. Despite that, it can be said that the large size and volume of the testis, and complex structure of the cremaster, could consist of a heat loss reduction strategy in cold and humid forest environments. CONCLUSIONS: Except for the larger size of the testicles in hybrid individuals, no other significant morphological differences were found between B. arachnoides and hybrids (B. arachnoides × B. hypoxanthus).

Post-acute COVID syndrome (PACS) is a global health concern and is often associated with debilitating symptoms. Post-COVID fatigue is a particularly frequent and troubling issue, and its underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. One potential contributor is micropathological injury of subcortical and brainstem structures, as has been identified in other patient populations. Texture-based analysis (TA) may be used to measure such changes in anatomical MRI data. The present study develops a methodology of voxel-wise TA mapping in subcortical and brainstem regions, which is then applied to T1-weighted MRI data from a cohort of 48 individuals who had PACS (32 with and 16 without ongoing fatigue symptoms) and 15 controls who had cold and flu-like symptoms but tested negative for COVID-19. Both groups were assessed an average of 4-5 months post-infection. There were no significant differences between PACS and control groups, but significant differences were observed between those with and without fatigue symptoms in the PACS group. This included reduced texture energy and increased entropy, along with reduced texture correlation, cluster shade and profile in the putamen, pallidum, thalamus and brainstem. These findings provide new insights into the neurophysiological mechanisms that underlie PACS, with altered tissue texture as a potential biomarker of this debilitating condition.

Background: Because of the proximity of several ligaments, aponeuroses, and capsule in the limited area of the elbow joint, the precise anatomy is difficult to understand. In the current narrative review, we focused on two anatomical perspectives: the capsular attachment and structures consisting of ligaments. Methods: Based on the previously performed studies regarding the elbow anatomy, a narrative review was prepared in terms of the capsular attachment and structures consisting of ligaments. Results: At the tip of the coronoid process, the joint capsule attaches roughly 6 mm distal to its tip with 6-12 mm length. On the lateral epicondyle of the humerus, the capsular attachment at the anterior part of the extensor carpi radialis brevis origin is narrower than the one distal to it. A single interpretation of the lateral collateral ligament is the capsulo-aponeurotic membrane, which is composed of the joint capsule intermingling with the supinator aponeurosis. The anterior bundle of the ulnar collateral ligament could be interpreted as the grossly separated collagenous structure from the tendinous complex, which is composed of the tendinous septum between the flexor digitorum superficialis and pronator teres muscle, the medial part of the brachialis muscle, and deep aponeurosis of the flexor digitorum superficialis muscle. Discussion: Based on these perspectives, ligaments could function as a "static-dynamic" stabilizer rather than a simple static one.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is used to treat several neuropsychiatric disorders including depression, where it is effective in approximately half of patients for whom pharmacological approaches have failed. Treatment response is related to stimulation parameters such as the stimulation frequency, pattern, intensity, location, total number of pulses and sessions applied, as well as target brain network engagement. One critical but underexplored component of the stimulation procedure is the orientation or yaw angle of the commonly used figure-of-eight TMS coil, which is known to impact neuronal response to TMS. However, coil orientation has remained largely unchanged since TMS was first used to treat depression and continues to be based on motor cortex anatomy which may not be optimal for the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex treatment site. This targeted narrative review evaluates experimental, clinical, and computational evidence indicating that optimizing coil orientation may potentially improve TMS treatment outcomes. The properties of the electric field induced by TMS, the changes to this field caused by the differing conductivities of head tissues, and the interaction between coil orientation and the underlying cortical anatomy are summarized. We describe evidence that the magnitude and site of cortical activation, surrogate markers of TMS dosing and brain network targeting considered central in clinical response to TMS, are influenced by coil orientation. We suggest that coil orientation should be considered when applying therapeutic TMS and propose several approaches to optimizing this potentially important treatment parameter.

BACKGROUND: Race and sex differences are not consistently reported in the literature. Fundamentally, anatomical differences of cervical neuroforaminal dimensions (CNFD) amongst these groups would be important to know. PURPOSE: To establish normative radiographic morphometric measurements of CNFD and uncover the influence of patient sex, race, and ethnicity while also considering anthropometric characteristics. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective radiographic morphometric study. PATIENT SAMPLE: 1,000 patients between 18 and 35 years of age who were free of spinal pathology. OUTCOME MEASURES: Foraminal height, axial width, and area of cervical neural foramen. METHODS: Cervical CTs were reviewed to measure CNFD, defined as follows: foraminal height, axial width, and area. Statistical analyses were performed to assess associations between CNFD, and patient height, weight, sex, race, and ethnicity. RESULTS: CNFD measurements followed a bimodal distribution pattern moving caudally from C2-T1. Irrespective of disc level, cervical CNFD were as follows: left and right widths of 6.6 ± 1.5 and 6.6 ± 1.5 mm, heights of 9.4 ± 2.4 and 9.4 ± 3.2 mm, and areas of 60.0 ± 19.5 and 60.6 ± 20.7 mm2. Left and right foraminal width were highest at C2-C3 and lowest at C3-C4. Left and right foraminal height were highest at C7-T1 and C6-C7 respectively and lowest at C3-C4. Left and right foraminal areas were highest at C2-C3 and lowest at C3-C4. Significant differences were observed for all CNFD measurements across disc levels. CNFD did not vary based on laterality. Significant CNFD differences were observed with respect to patient sex, race, and ethnicity. Male height and area were larger compared to females. In contrast, female foraminal width was larger compared to males. The Asian cohort demonstrated the largest foraminal widths. White and Hispanic patients demonstrated the largest foraminal heights and areas. Black patients demonstrated the smallest foraminal widths, heights, and areas. Patient height and weight were only weakly correlated with CNFD measurements across all levels from C2-T1. CONCLUSIONS: This study describes 36,000 normative measurements of 12,000 foramina from C2-T1. CNFD measurements vary based on disc level, but not laterality. Contrasting left- versus right-sided neuroforamina of the same level may aid in determining the presence of unilateral stenosis. Patient sex, race, and ethnicity are associated with CNFD, while patient anthropometric factors are weakly correlated with CNFD.

PURPOSE: Preoperative counting of thoracic and lumbar vertebrae is crucial in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) due to reported anatomical variations and potential surgical site misidentification. This study investigated characteristics associated with the vertebral number variations AIS, particularly focusing on rib morphology. METHODS: Based on three-dimensional computed tomography, patients were categorized into the non-variant number group, comprising individuals with 12 thoracic and 5 lumbar vertebrae, and the variant number group, comprising individuals with different numbers of vertebrae. Additionally, the most caudal rib morphology was classified as normal, unilateral, or hypoplastic. RESULTS: A total of 359 patients were included in our study (41 males, 318 females, age: 16.3 ± 3.1 years), with 44 patients (12.3%) assigned to the variant number group. Logistic regression analysis identified unilateral ribs (odds ratio [OR]: 10.50) and lumbosacral transitional vertebrae (LSTV) (OR 6.49) as significant risk factors associated with variations. Further analysis revealed hypoplastic ribs as a significant risk factor associated with LSTV (OR: 4.58). 8 CONCLUSION: Our study suggests that abnormal rib morphology may be associated with vertebral number variations. Close attention to rib morphology is, therefore, warranted in cases with atypical vertebral numbers. Accordingly, to ensure surgical safety and accuracy, spine surgeons must communicate these variations to the surgical team, standardize nomenclature for describing them, and intraoperatively verify fusion levels with them.

PURPOSE: To quantify and compare the different prevalence rates of specific retinal imaging biomarkers in patients with intermediate AMD (iAMD) and advanced non-neovascular AMD (nnAMD). METHODS: Cross-sectional study of patients with iAMD and advanced nnAMD. Imaging studies were reviewed for qualitative imaging biomarkers. Choroidal thickness measurements were obtained subfoveally and in 1000 um and 2000 um intervals away from the fovea. The Chi-squared test and Fisher's exact test were used to compare rates of imaging biomarkers among the two cohorts. P-value of <0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: 376 eyes of 197 patients with iAMD and 187 eyes of 97 patients with advanced nnAMD were recruited. There were significantly lower rates of the following imaging biomarkers in the iAMD compared with the advanced nnAMD cohorts: soft drusen (66.0% vs. 84.2%, p = 0.001), calcified drusen (4.3% vs. 40.0%, p < 0.0001), RPD (26.2% vs. 53.3%, p < 0.0001), ORT (0.5% vs. 46.9%, p < 0.0001), RP (1.1% vs. 46.3%, p < 0.0001), pigment migration (53.2% vs. 100%, p < 0.0001), and iRORA (17.9% vs. 80.2%, p < 0.0001). In the iAMD cohort, choroidal thickness was significantly greater at 188 µm (SD: 60) and 194 µm (SD: 69), compared to the advanced nnAMD with measurements of 153 µm (SD: 68), and 161 µm (SD: 76). This difference was statistically significant (p < 0.0001 and p = 0.0002). CONCLUSIONS: Our results highlight significant differences in imaging biomarkers between both cohorts. Key biomarkers, such as iRORA, RPD, pigment migration, and thinner choroidal thickness, were associated with advanced nnAMD. Identifying these biomarkers early may help target patients who could benefit from new treatments, potentially delaying vision loss.

Cadaveric study; To describe the characteristics of the nerve and its relationship with the lumbar intervertebral disc and psoas major muscle. Nerve injury is an understudied complication of extreme lateral interbody fusion. A detailed description of the nerve anatomy would be helpful for surgeons to minimize the risk of this complication. The lumbar plexus and lumbar sympathetic nerve of 10 embalmed male cadavers were dissected, and the distribution, number, and spatial orientation of the nerves on the L1/2 to L4/5 intervertebral discs were examined. Metal wires were applied along nerve paths through the psoas major muscle. The position of the nerves was examined on CT. In zone III at L1/2 and L4/5, no nerves were found. In zone II and zone III at L2/3, no lumbar plexus was found, and only the ramus communicans passed through. At the L1-L5 level, the density of nerves in the posterior half of the psoas major muscle was greater than that in the anterior half. The lumbar plexus was found in all of zone IV. The genitofemoral nerve emerges superficially and anteriorly from the medial border of the psoas major at the L3-4 level, but at the L1/2 level, the sympathetic trunk is located in zone II. The remaining disc-level sympathetic trunks appear in zone I. No nerves were found in zone III of the L1/2 or L4/5 disc. In zones II and III of L2/3, the lumbar plexus appears safe. The genitofemoral nerve travels through zones II and III of L3/4. The distribution density of nerves in the posterior half of the psoas major muscle was greater than that in the anterior half of that muscle at the L1-L5 level.

Meralgia paresthetica is a common but probably underrecognized syndrome caused by dysfunction of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve. The diagnosis is based on the patient's description of sensory disturbance, often painful, on the anterolateral aspect of the thigh, with normal strength and reflexes. Sensory nerve conduction studies and somatosensory evoked potentials may be used to support the diagnosis, but both have technical limitations, with low specificity and sensitivity. Risk factors for meralgia paresthetica include obesity, tight clothing, and diabetes mellitus. Some cases are complications of hip or lumbar spine surgery. Most cases are self-limited, but a small proportion of patients remain with refractory and disabling symptoms. Treatment options include medications for neuropathic pain, neurolysis, neurectomy, and radioablation, but controlled trials to compare efficacy are lacking.

Tarsal joint illness is a frequent source of hind limb lameness due to the complex anatomy of the region and the presence of numerous bony and soft tissue structures. Proper lameness diagnosis aims to discover the structure provoking lameness. Ultrasonography documents valuable information of soft tissues and characterizes soft tissue injuries that have heretofore been difficult to obtain either noninvasively or via radiography. The objectives of the current study were to develop and describe a standardized ultrasonographic protocol for investigation of the tarsal region in donkeys. The donkey tarsal anatomy was investigated in 5 cadavers and the tarsi of 11 healthy lameness free adult donkeys were echographically investigated. The dorsal, plantar, lateral and medial aspects of the tarsal region were substantially evaluated at four anatomical landmarks in both the longitudinal and horizontal planes using a multi-frequency 5-12 MHz linear transducer. Sonoanatomy of the extensor and flexor tarsal tendons, collateral and plantar ligaments, and synovial pouches was delineated and described. Systematic echography of the tarsal region allowed accurate localization and thorough exploration of various soft tissues of clinical interest in the donkey tarsus. Sonograms provided in this study should serve as a reference database for tarsal ultrasonography in clinical circumstances.

BACKGROUND: The need for an objective set of anterior trunk measurements, such as nipple and clavicular shoulder joints, is essential to quantify the anterior asymmetry present in scoliosis. This study aims to characterize breast asymmetry (BA) in young individuals with scoliosis using photogrammetry. METHODS: Digital photographs of the anterior trunk of the 51 scoliosis patients aged 4-20 years were taken from an anterior perspective. These images were then transferred to a computer. Ten parameters were measured using the ImageJ software. The positions of patients' nipples were classified into 6 types based on ratios on the x-axis. RESULTS: The majority of patients had a right breast that was larger, intensifying the apparent BA due to trunk rotation. The apical vertebra level in patients was found at T8 in 23.6% and T9 in 45.1%. In 92.5% of the patients, the right breast was consistently larger. The lengths between the lateral boundaries and nipples of the right and left breasts and between the medial boundary and nipple of the right breast were statistically significantly higher in males than in females (p < 0.05). Significant differences were found when comparing the values of the lengths between the medial boundaries and nipples of the right and left breasts, the difference in length between the right and left acromioclavicular joint lines, and the angles of the nipple and acromioclavicular joint with the degrees of scoliosis in juvenile and adolescents (p < 0.05). Pearson regression analysis revealed a significant correlation between BA differences and the Cobb angle with a correlation coefficient of 0.901. Factors related to breast aesthetics, like differences in the height of nipples and the distance from the sternal notch to the nipple, represent 30% of the overall score. CONCLUSION: The study concluded that there is a significant correlation between the severity of scoliosis and BA differences. Augmentation mammaplasty for BA not only decreased the breast difference but also leveled the nipple disparities. Photogrammetry is considered to be an alternative to other methods and is believed to contribute to the follow-up of BA. BACKGROUND: According to the German Physiotherapy Education and Qualification Regulations, teaching of anatomical structures is one of the fundamental subjects of physiotherapy education. Besides exhibits and models, anatomy atlases are usually used as teaching and learning tools. These are available in both analog form such as printed books or in digital form as a mobile application. Furthermore, the use of digital teaching and learning tools is steadily increasing within the education of health professionals. AIM: To assess the efficacy of a digital educational tool in contrast to an analog anatomical atlas in acquiring knowledge about anatomical structures. MATERIAL AND METHOD: The data collection took place in the context of an anatomy tutorial for students of the bachelor's degree program in physiotherapy. In a cross-over design, the students completed two learning assignments, each, with different learning materials provided, either with an anatomy app on a tablet or with an anatomy atlas as a book. The tests to assess the newly acquired knowledge immediately after the task, consisted of questions about the anatomical structures of the knee as well as the shoulder. In addition, the students' satisfaction with the learning materials provided was surveyed using a questionnaire. The survey assessed their satisfaction, their assessment of learning success, and their affinity to digital learning materials. This was done using a 5-point Likert scale and a free-text field. The data was analyzed descriptively, and group differences were calculated using a t-tests. RESULTS: Thirty students participated. The group comparison showed a significantly better outcome for the group that prepared with the analog anatomy atlas for the questions on the knee than the comparison group that used the anatomy app (t(28) = 2.6; p = 0.007). For the questions concerning the shoulder, there was no significant difference between the digital and analog groups (t(28) = 1.14; p = 0.26). The questionnaire revealed that satisfaction with the analog anatomy atlas was significantly higher than with the anatomy app. A total of 93.34% rated their experience with the analog learning tool at least "somewhat satisfied". In contrast, 72.67% of students partially or fully agreed that they "enjoyed learning with digital learning tools". DISCUSSION: Learning anatomical structures with the Human Anatomy Atlas 2023 + app did not show a clear advantage when compared to an anatomy book in these two cohorts of physiotherapy students. The results of the questionnaire also showed greater satisfaction with the analog anatomy atlas than with the anatomy app, whereas most students stated that they frequently use digital learning tools, including some for anatomical structures. Satisfaction with the learning tool seems to play a central role in their effectiveness. In addition, sufficient time must be provided for users to familiarize themselves with the user interface of digital applications to use them effectively. The characterization of colleters in Rubiaceae is crucial for understanding their role in plant function. Analyzing colleters in Palicourea tetraphylla and Palicourea rudgeoides aims to deepen the understanding of these structures morphoanatomical and functional characteristics. The study reveals colleters with palisade epidermis and a parenchymatic central axis, classified as standard type, featuring vascularization and crystals. Colleter secretion, abundant in acidic mucopolysaccharides, proteins, and phenolic compounds, protects against desiccation. The ontogenesis, development, and senescence of the colleters are quite rapid and fulfill their role well in biotic and abiotic protection because these structures are present at different stages of development in the same stipule. Pronounced protrusions on the colleters surface, coupled with the accumulation of secretion in the intercellular and subcuticular spaces, suggest that the secretory process occurs through the wall, driven by pressure resulting from the accumulation of secretion. The microorganisms in the colleters' secretion, especially in microbiota-rich environments such as the Atlantic Forest, provide valuable information about plant-microorganism interactions, such as resistance to other pathogens and organisms and ecological balance. This enhanced understanding of colleters contributes to the role of these structures in the plant and enriches knowledge about biological interactions within specific ecosystems and the family taxonomy.

Research on Satyrium nepalense var. ciliatum (Lindl.) Hook. f. has primarily focused on populations in Northwestern Yunnan, with limited studies on pollination syndromes and insect behavior. In addition, it is geographically limited in its breeding system studies. Here, pollination syndromes, florivory, and breeding systems of S. nepalense var. ciliatum from Liangwang Mountain (Central Yunnan, China) were investigated through field work, microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and parafin section. It was revealed that the pollination syndrome was possessing out-crossing, such as bright color, a developed rostellum, nectar glands in the spur, and food hairs at the lip base. The color and nectar attracted flower visitors, and florivory was observed. Some flower visitors pollinated their companion species. Ants were identified as floral visitors for the first time in Satyrium, although substantial pollination was not observed. Ants might be potential pollinators. S. nepalense var. ciliatum possessed a mixed breeding system, including selfing, out-crossing, and apomixis, with apomixis being predominant in nature. It is suggested that the pollination syndrome, florivory, and pollination competition would contribute to its mixed breeding systems, particularly leading to the occurrence of apomixis.
