RESUMO

The Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile 1813 banquette provides precious ecosystem services for Mediterranean beach nourishment and protection, representing an important way of energy transfer through marine-coastal habitats. It is surprising to note how it is poorly investigated, especially concerning its double role as potential sink and source of chemicals. In particular, few studies exist about the metal (loid)s occurrence and no data are available on emerging contaminants, such as Rare Earth Elements (REEs). The present research investigated for the first time the concentrations of twenty-eight metal(loid)s and fifteen REEs in a well-structured banquette along the Italian coast (Central Tyrrhenian Sea) showing that (i) metal(loid)s and REEs occur in banquettes, with higher relative concentrations of some metal(loid)s (B, Sr, Mn, Fe, Al, Zn) and REEs (Ce, Y, La, Nd) with no statistically significant seasonal variations; (ii) Posidonia banquettes may represent an interesting biological model for chemicals monitoring.

Seaweeds are foundation species across near-subtidal and intertidal zones, including when detached and free-floating and then cast ashore as wrack. Wrack is sometimes removed by humans for aesthetics or to be used as fertilizer. The study of wrack as an important habitat and resource for macroinvertebrates in high latitudes has been limited. To determine which taxa might be impacted when wrack is removed, the composition and relative abundance of macroinvertebrates were quantified monthly and compared in areas with and without wrack in Kachemak Bay, Alaska. Relationships were assessed between macroinvertebrates and wrack line (tidal height, moisture content, seaweed biomass) and beach characteristics (wave exposure, beach slope, substrate types). Approximately 47,000 animals were counted and a total of 87 taxa were identified from beach-cast wrack, drifting wrack, and bare sediment habitats. Macroinvertebrate communities within beach-cast wrack and bare sediment habitats were significantly different. Beach-cast wrack generally had more terrestrially-derived animals, especially Coleoptera and Diptera. Bare beach sediment was predominantly occupied by Enchytraeida (annelids). Macroinvertebrate communities were most strongly influenced by seaweed biomass and tidal height of the wrack line. Beach-cast wrack and bare sediments were also compared to drifting wrack in shallow, nearshore waters. Drifting wrack was different and generally occupied by more marine-derived animals, especially Amphipoda, Gastropoda, Mytilida, and Polychaeta. Ecological succession in decaying beach-cast wrack was documented, with decomposers (e.g., Amphipoda and Diptera) being early colonizers, and predators (e.g., Coleoptera and Hymenoptera) arriving later. Understanding the importance of this unique and ecologically important habitat to macroinvertebrates is essential, as removals and reductions in wrack availability could influence macroinvertebrate community structure, higher trophic level consumers, and key ecological processes on beaches. This study is the first direct investigation into seaweed wrack-associated macroinvertebrate communities in a sub-Arctic system.

In order to add value to the beach-cast Sargassum cymosum algae, its biomass was converted by pyrolysis process at 800°C into biochar, characterized and applied in the adsorption of Acetaminophen in batch and fixed-bed processes. Characterization by pH, Point of Zero Charge (pHPZC), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Thermogravimetric (TG), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Surface area (BET) showed that the biochar presents properties favourable for the Acetaminophen adsorption. High surface area was obtained of 368.1 m². g-1, presenting the formation of pores, observed by SEM. The biochar showed basic characteristics (pH = 8.84 and pHPZC = 9.9), inferring an adsorption involving several different mechanisms such as dispersive interactions by π electrons, electrostatic attractions, and hydrophobic interactions. The adsorption mechanism is limited by chemisorption and governed by the formation of monolayer on the biochar surface, the Pseudo-second order kinetic and Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm model described the best behaviour of batch adsorption, with equilibrium and maximum adsorption capacity qe = 6.93 ± 0.07 mg. g-1 and qms = 12.34 ± 0.45 mg. g-1, respectively. Fixed-bed adsorption were performed varying adsorbent mass (0.3 and 0.6 g) and flow rate (2.5 and 5.0 mL. min-1), the best qy = 42.33 mg. g-1 found to adsorbent mass of 0.6 g and flow rate of 2.5 mL. min-1. Yan model described the best behaviour of the breakthrough curves data. Thus, the results provide insights into the development of adsorbents from beach-cast of Sargassum cymosum to adsorption of Acetaminophen, enhancing the use of environmental waste to obtain it.

Beach wrack of marine macrophytes is a natural component of many beaches. To test if such wrack emits the potent greenhouse gas methane, field measurements were made at different seasons on beach wrack depositions of different ages, exposure, and distance from the water. Methane emissions varied greatly, from 0 to 176 mg CH4-C m-2 day-1, with a clear positive correlation between emission and temperature. Dry wrack had lower emissions than wet. Using temperature data from 2016 to 2020, seasonal changes in fluxes were calculated for a natural wrack accumulation area. Such calculated average emissions were close to zero during winter, but peaked in summer, with very high emissions when daily temperatures exceeded 20 °C. We conclude that waterlogged beach wrack significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and that emissions might drastically increase with increasing global temperatures. When beach wrack is collected into heaps away from the water, the emissions are however close to zero.

To assess the exposure of beachgoers to viruses, a study on seawater, sand, and beach-stranded material was carried out, searching for human viruses, fecal indicator organisms, and total fungi. Moreover, for the first time, the genome persistence and infectivity of two model viruses was studied in laboratory-spiked sand and seawater samples during a one-week experiment. Viral genome was detected in 13.6 % of the environmental samples, but it was not infectious (Human Adenovirus - HAdV, and enterovirus). Norovirus and SARS-CoV-2 were not detected. The most contaminated samples were from sand and close to riverine discharges. In lab-scale experiments, the infectivity of HAdV5 decreased by ~1.5-Log10 in a week, the one of Human Coronavirus-229E disappeared in <3 h in sand. The genome of both viruses persisted throughout the experiment. Our results confirm viral contamination of the beach and suggest HAdV as an index pathogen for beach monitoring and quantitative risk assessment.

The blooming of beach-cast seaweed has caused environmental degradation in some coastal regions. Therefore, a proper treating and utilizing method of beach-cast seaweed is demanded. This study investigated the potential of producing power or biofuel from pyrolysis of beach-cast seaweed and the effect of the ash-washing process. First, the raw and washed beach-cast seaweeds (RS and WS) were prepared. Thereafter, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), bench-scale pyrolysis experiment, process simulation, and life cycle assessment (LCA) were conducted. The TG results showed that the activation energies of thermal decomposition of the main organic contents of RS and WS were 44.23 and 58.45 kJ/mol, respectively. Three peak temperatures of 400, 500, and 600 °C were used in the bench-scale pyrolysis experiments of WS. The 600 °C case yielded the most desirable gas and liquid products. The bench-scale pyrolysis experiment of RS was conducted at 600 °C as well. Also, an LCA was conducted based on the simulation result of 600 °C pyrolysis of WS. The further process simulation and LCA results show that compare to producing liquid biofuel and syngas, a process designed for electricity production is most favored. It was estimated that treating 1 ton of dry WS can result in a negative cumulative energy demand of -2.98 GJ and carbon emissions of -790.89 kg CO2 equivalence.

A webcam was installed on the shore of the South-Eastern Baltic (Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia) to monitor the beach dynamics and beach-cast (BC) daily from November 1, 2019, to October 31, 2020. The beach was formed not the whole year (77%). The most frequent BC residence time was one day (1-21, 4.1 on average, and 1-19, 4.3 on average days to the west and east of the groin, respectively). The BC consisted primarily of algae. Fresh BC occupied smaller area, and its layer was thicker than that of long-discarded and trampled BC. The specific amount of material (per m2) in a fresh BC was 3.7 times higher in volume and 2.6 times higher in weight than in long-discarded and trampled BC. For fresh and old BC, the specific volumes were 63 and 17 l per m2, respectively, and the specific masses were 48 and 18 kg per m2, respectively.

As accumulation zones, sandy beaches are temporal sinks for beach wrack and litter, both often seen as nuisances to tourists. Consequently, there is a need for beach management and an enhanced political interest to evaluate their ecosystem services. We applied a new online multidisciplinary assessment approach differentiating between the provision, potential, and flow at German and Lithuanian beaches (Southern Baltic Sea). We selected a set of services and assessed four beach scenarios developed accordingly to common management measures (different beach wrack and litter accumulations). We conducted comparative assessments involving 39 external experts using spread-sheets and workshops, an online survey as well as a combined data-based approach. Results indicated the relative importance of cultural (52.2%), regulating and maintenance (37.4%), and provisioning services (10.4%). Assessed impact scores showed that the removal of beach wrack is not favorable with regard to the overall ecosystem service provision. Contrarily, the removal of litter can increase the service flow significantly. When removing beach wrack, synergies between services should be used, i.e., use of biomass as material or further processing. However, trade-offs prevail between cultural services and the overall provision of beach ecosystem services (i.e., coastal protection and biodiversity). We recommend developing new and innovative beach cleaning techniques and procedures, i.e., different spatio-temporal patterns, e.g., mechanical vs. manually, daily vs. on-demand, whole beach width vs. patches. Our fast and easy-to-apply assessment approach can support decision-making processes within sustainable coastal management allowing us to show and compare the impacts of measures from a holistic ecosystem services perspective.

Seagrass detritus can attract numerous invertebrates as it provides food and substrate within the meadow or in adjacent environments. Nonetheless, several factors could modify the invertebrate response to this habitat. In this study, we tested if epifaunal colonisation of Zostera noltei detritus was related to substrate availability rather than food and whether colonising assemblages were similar according to the meadow structural complexity. Litterbags filled with natural or artificial detritus were deployed within an eelgrass meadow in a Mediterranean coastal lagoon (Thau lagoon, France). Colonisation appeared to be driven by the presence of detritus, with similar assemblages in natural and artificial substrate, but with more individuals than the empty bags, used as controls. There were also no differences according to habitat complexity. These findings show that detritus, acting as a faunal magnet, plays an important role in maintaining biodiversity, as epifauna is a critical trophic link between primary producers and consumers.
