Urinary polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) metabolites are associated with oxidative stress; however, epidemiological studies have not reported the impacts of these urinary PAH metabolites on blood lipid levels. This study investigated the relationship between urinary PAH metabolites, urinary 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), and blood lipid profiles. A total of 109 elderly volunteers were recruited with complete datasets for analysis. Blood and morning urine samples were collected in the winter of 2011. The PAH metabolites, creatinine, and 8-OHdG levels in urine samples were analyzed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry, spectrophotometry, and an ELISA kit, respectively. The blood lipid profiles were analyzed using an automatic biochemical analyzer. The relationship between lipid profiles and 8-OHdG was assessed using a two-independent sample nonparametric test, categorized by gender, smoking, and alcohol consumption status. After normalizing the concentration values, a general linear regression model was employed to examine the correlations between PAH metabolites, 8-OHdG, and lipid profiles. A mediation model was developed to investigate the mediating effect of 8-OHdG on the relationship between PAH metabolites and lipid profiles. The median of eight PAH metabolite concentrations in urine samples ranged from 1 to 10 µmol/mol creatinine (Cr). Significant differences in lipid profiles were observed across genders. However, no significant differences were found in smoking or alcohol consumption status for both genders. Linear regression analysis revealed that an increase in the logarithmic concentration of 2-hydroxynaphthalene (2-OHNap), 9-hydroxyfluorene (9-OHFlu), 3-hydroxyfluorene (3-OHFlu), 2-hydroxyfluorene (2-OHFlu), 1-hydroxypyrene (1-OHPyr), and 6-hydroxychrysene (6-OHChr) was associated with an increase in urinary 8-OHdG levels, after adjusting for BMI and age. Specifically, 1-hydroxynaphthalene (1-OHNap) and 1-OHPyr correlated negatively with apolipoprotein A1 (Apo A1). Conversely, 1-OHPyr was positively correlated with low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). In addition, b,c-dihydroxyphenanthrene (2-OHBcPhe) was positively associated with apolipoprotein B (Apo B). Notably, 8-OHdG did not exhibit a significant correlation with lipid profiles. The mediating effect of 8-OHdG on the relationship between hydroxylated PAHs and lipid profiles was not statistically significant. However, the indirect effects of hydroxylated PAHs on blood lipids were statistically substantial, specifically for 1-OHNap to Apo A1 (-0.025, 95% CI: -0.041, -0.009), 1-OHPyr to LDL-C (0.107, 95% CI: 0.011, 0.203), and 2-OHBcPhe to Apo B (0.070, 95% CI: 0.005, 0.135). This study suggests that an increase in urinary PAH metabolites may elevate the levels of urinary 8-OHdG and influence blood lipid profiles. However, no direct relationship was found between 8-OHdG and lipid profiles. The mediation analysis indicated that the effects of PAH metabolites on lipid changes may operate through pathways other than oxidative stress.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the effect of Internet + E-Coach chronic disease system intervention on fasting blood glucose (FPG), 2-hour postprandial blood glucose(2hPG), fasting serum insulin (FINS), triglyceride (TG), alanine transaminase (ALT) and quality of life in patients with chronic diabetic retinopathy. METHODS: 208 patients with chronic diabetic retinopathy who were treated in the hospital from March 2021 to March 2023 are chosen and separated into two groups by random number Table 104 patients in the control group received routine continuous intervention, and the research group received Internet + E-Coach chronic disease system intervention. The cognition of disease related knowledge, blood related indicators inflammatory factor levels and improvement of life quality between the two groups before intervention, 6 and 12 months after intervention were compared. RESULTS: Before the intervention, the comparison between the two groups in disease related knowledge scores, blood glucose, blood lipid, liver function indicators, inflammatory factor, and low vision quality of life scale (CLVQOL) scores was with P > 0.05. After 6 and 12 months of intervention, the research group had significantly higher scores for basic blood glucose intervention, healthy diet, reasonable exercise, and correct medication use compared to the control group (P < 0.05). FPG, 2hPG, TG and ALT in the research group were lower than those in the control group. FINS were higher in the control group, with P < 0.05. Interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), and hypersensitive C-reactive protein (Hs-CRP) in the research group were obviously lower than those in the control group (P < 0.05). The scores of far vision, movement and light perception, adjustment ability, reading and fine work, and daily living ability in the research group were higher than those in the control group, with P < 0.05. CONCLUSION: The intervention of Internet + E-Coach chronic disease system can improve the knowledge of chronic diabetic retinopathy patients about their own condition, stabilize the levels of blood sugar, blood lipid and liver function indicators, reduce the inflammatory reaction of the body, and improve the quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Currently, studies on the formation mechanism for the enlargement of arachnoid granulation (AG) are lacking. The impact of dyslipidemia on the formation of multiple large arachnoid granulations (LAGs) was studied in this research. METHODS: The study included patients diagnosed with cerebral venous sinus stenosis (CVSS) related to LAG. The number of LAGs was assessed via high-resolution black blood magnetic resonance imaging. The relationships between blood lipids and multiple LAGs were explored to evaluate the effects of dyslipidemia on the formation of multiple LAGs. RESULTS: A total of 163 participants with a diagnosis of LAG were included. The levels of total cholesterol (TC) (P = 0.004) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) (P = 0.01) in the multiple LAGs group were greater than those in the non-multiple LAGs group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that TC (odds ratio (OR), 2.19; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.26-3.80; P = 0.006) and LDL-c (OR, 2.18; 95% CI, 1.16-4.07; P = 0.02) were independently associated with multiple LAGs. CONCLUSIONS: TC and LDL-c are independently related to multiple LAGs, indicating that dyslipidemia may be a potential cause of CVSS. Therefore, monitoring blood lipids may be necessary for patients with LAGs.

BACKGROUND: Lipids are associated with atherosclerosis, and novel lipid indices have been recently identified to be closely linked to cardiovascular diseases. This study explored the association between four novel lipid indices and the white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) in patients diagnosed with cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD). METHODS: Between January 2023 and February 2024, 219 patients were recruited, including 165 patients with CSVD WMHs and 54 healthy controls. Based on WMHs severity, patients with CSVD were categorised into mild and moderate-to-severe cohorts using the Fazekas rating scale. The plasma levels of four novel lipid indices (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio [LDL-C/HDL-C], triglyceride/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio [TG/HDL-C], total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio [TC/HDL-C], and non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [Non-HDL-C]), were rigorously monitored in the enrolled patients. RESULTS: A total of 165 patients with CSVD WMHs were enrolled, including 94 with mild WMHs and 71 with moderate-to-severe WMHs. Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that LDL-C/HDL-C, TG/HDL-C, TC/HDL-C, and Non-HDL-C levels were significantly associated with WMHs (all P ≤ 0.001). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was performed to evaluate the diagnostic performance of plasma lipid levels for WMHs in patients with CSVD. The novel lipid indicators outperformed traditional lipid indicators in assessing the diagnostic capability of WMHs. The combined index of the four blood lipid indices had an optimal cutoff point (OCP) of 0.489, with 88.3% sensitivity and 60.6% specificity. The area under the curve (AUC) is 0.800 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.731-0.869; P < 0.001). Compared with males (OR = 1.126, 95% CI = 0.779-1.628), females (OR = 2.484, 95% CI = 1.398-4.414; P for interaction = 0.023) had a higher risk of developing WMHs. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates a significant association between four novel lipid indices and the cerebral WMHs in CSVD, highlighting the potential of these markers as novel plasma biomarkers and predictive indicators for assessing CSVD progression and guiding clinical management.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of mortality worldwide, with dyslipidemia being a significant risk factor. This meta-analysis provides a comprehensive evaluation of the impact of bovine dairy-derived milk fat globule membrane (MFGM) supplementation on blood lipid profiles in adults. A systematic search was conducted across various databases up until March 2024, resulting in the inclusion of 6 trials with a total of 464 participants. The findings indicated that MFGM phospholipid supplementation may significantly reduce total cholesterol (TC) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels. A combined analysis of the effects on TC, LDL, and triglycerides (TG) revealed a significant overall reduction in these markers. However, no significant increase or reduction was observed on high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and TG levels. Overall, MFGM phospholipid intake may significantly decrease the level of TC and LDL, while no significant changes in TG and HDL were observed. These results suggest that MFGM supplementation could be a promising dietary intervention for improving lipid profiles in adults. Nonetheless, further research is warranted to confirm these results and to better understand the potential variability in the impact of MFGM on blood lipid levels.

OBJECTIVE: Atherosclerosis (AS) is an inflammatory disease of arterial intima driven by lipids. Liver X receptor alpha (LXRα) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) agonists are limited in the treatment of AS due to their off-target effects and serious side effects. Therefore, this study was designed to construct a novel nanoparticle (NP) and evaluate its mechanism of action on inflammation inhibition and lipid reduction in AS. METHODS: We synthesized cRGD-platelet@MnO/MSN@PPARα/LXRα NPs (cRGD-platelet- NPs) and confirmed their size, safety, and targeting ability through various tests, including dynamic light scattering and immunofluorescence. In vivo and in vitro experiments assessed cell proliferation, apoptosis, inflammation, and plaque formation. Finally, the NF-κB signaling pathway expression in rat aorta was determined using a western blot. RESULTS: The synthesis of cRGD-platelet-NPs was successful; the particle size was approximately 150 nm, and the PDI was below 0.3. They could be successfully absorbed by cells, exhibiting high safety in vivo and in vitro. The cRGD-platelet-NPs successfully reduced plaque formation, improved lipid profiles by lowering LDL-cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglycerides, and raised HDL-cholesterol levels. Additionally, they decreased inflammatory markers in the serum and aortic tissue, suggesting reduced inflammation. Immunohistochemistry and western blot analyses indicated that these NPs could not only promote M2 macrophage polarization but also suppress the NF-κB signaling pathway. CONCLUSION: The newly developed cRGD-platelet-NPs with high safety are a promising approach to AS treatment, which can regulate ABCA1, reduce the formation of AS plaques, and enhance cholesterol efflux. The mechanism may involve the suppression of the NF-κB signaling pathway.

Background: Roxadustat is commonly used to treat renal anemia. However, the potential effects of roxadustat on metabolism and organs other than the kidneys have recently attracted increased attention. Objective: This study aimed to examine the regulatory effects of roxadustat on thyroid hormones and blood lipid metabolism in patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) undergoing hemodialysis. Methods: Eighty ESKD patients on hemodialysis and taking roxadustat were enrolled. Hemoglobin, thyroid hormones (TSH, FT3, FT4), and blood lipid profiles (TC, LDL-C, TG, HDL-C) were assessed before and after treatment. Changes in these parameters were compared, and relevant causative factors were analyzed. Results: Roxadustat significantly increased Hb, lowered TSH, FT4, TC, and LDL-C levels (all P<0.001). Patients were categorized into three groups based on post-treatment TSH inhibition percentage: Q1(≥70%), Q2(30%-70%), Q3(≤30%). Pre-treatment TSH decreased with reduced TSH inhibition (P<0.05). Post-treatment, TC, LDL-C, TSH, FT3, and FT4 increased with reduced TSH inhibition (all P<0.05).TC and LDL-C significantly decreased post-treatment in Q1 and Q2 (P<0.05). Correlation analysis showed a positive correlation between ΔTSH and pre-treatment TSH levels (r=0.732, P<0.001). The proportion of patients with ≥70% TSH inhibition increased with higher pre-treatment TSH levels (P for trend <0.05). ΔLDL-C and ΔTSH were positively correlated (r=0.278, P<0.05), with ΔTSH identified as an influencing factor in multiple linear regression (ß=0.133, 95% CI [0.042, 0.223], P<0.05). Conclusion: Roxadustat effectively improves anemia in ESKD patients while inhibiting TSH and FT4 secretion and reducing TC and LDL-C levels. Decreases in TSH levels correlate with baseline TSH levels, and lowered blood lipid levels are associated with decreased TSH levels.

Objective: This study aimed to examine the relationship between lipoprotein (a) (Lp[a]) and other blood lipid indexes and carotid artery atherosclerosis in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). Methods: A total of 2,018 patients were selected from the hospital "acute stroke intervention and secondary prevention registration database" by identifying blood fat indexes (cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and Lp[a]). Based on the results of carotid artery ultrasound examinations, the patients were divided into a "no plaque" group, comprising 400 patients, a "plaque and no stenosis" group, comprising 1,122 patients and a "carotid stenosis" group, comprising 496 patients. The relationship between Lp(a) and blood lipid indexes and carotid artery atherosclerosis was then investigated using multi-factor logistics regression analysis. Results: There were 400 patients (19.8%) with no carotid plaque, 1,122 patients (55.6%) with plaque and no carotid stenosis and 496 patients (24.6%) with carotid stenosis. As the degree of carotid artery atherosclerosis increased, the Lp(a) level gradually increased; Lp(a) and cholesterol were identified as independent risk factors for carotid atherosclerosis. Conclusion: Lipoprotein (a) and cholesterol are independent risk factors for patients with AIS with carotid atherosclerosis, and their levels increase with the degree of carotid artery atherosclerosis; therefore, attention should focus on levels of cholesterol and Lp(a) in acute stroke patients to control atherosclerosis effectively.

BACKGROUND: Observational studies have found a correlation between the levels of blood lipids and the development and progression of endometriosis (EM). However, the causality and direction of this correlation is unclear. This study aimed to examine the bidirectional connection between lipid profiles and the risk of EM using publicly available genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics. METHODS: Eligible exposure variables such as levels of triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) were selected using a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis method following a series of quality control procedures. Data on EM were obtained from the publicly available Finnish database of European patients. Inverse variance weighted (IVW), MR Egger, weighted median, and weighted mode methods were used to analyze the causal relationship between lipid exposure and EM, exclude confounders, perform sensitivity analyses, and assess the stability of the results. Reverse MR analyses were performed with EM as exposure and lipid results as study outcomes. RESULTS: IVW analysis results identified HDL as a protective factor for EM, while TG was shown to be a risk factor for EM. Subgroup analyses based on the site of the EM lesion identified HDL as a protective factor for EM of the uterus, while TG was identified a risk factor for the EM of the fallopian tube, ovary, and pelvic peritoneum. Reverse analysis did not reveal any effect of EM on the levels of lipids. CONCLUSION: Blood lipids, such as HDL and TG, may play an important role in the development and progression of EM. However, EM does not lead to dyslipidemia.

AIMS: We aim to investigate the causal effect of blood lipids mediating sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibition in cardiovascular disease (CVD) using Mendelian randomization (MR). METHODS AND RESULTS: A two-sample two-step MR study was conducted to evaluate the association of SGLT2 inhibition with CVDs and the mediation effects of blood lipids linking SGLT2 inhibition with CVDs. Genetic instruments for SGLT2 inhibition were identified as genetic variants, which were associated with the expression of the SLC5A2 gene and glycated haemoglobin level (HbA1c). SGLT2 inhibition was associated with reduced risk of heart failure (HF) (OR 0.44 [95% CI 0.32-0.61]; P = 6.0 × 10-7), atrial fibrillation (AF) (0.47 [0.37-0.61]; P = 1.81 × 10-8), coronary artery disease (CAD) (0.47 [0.30-0.73]; P = 7.46 × 10-4), myocardial infarction (MI) (0.30 [0.15-0.61]; P = 7.44 × 10-4), any stroke (AS) (0.28 [0.18-0.42]; P = 1.14 × 10-9), and ischaemic stroke (IS) (0.27 [0.17-0.44]; P = 1.97 × 10-7). Our results indicated that the proportion mediated of the mediating effect of total cholesterol was 1.7% (OR 0.99 [95% CI 0.98, 0.99], P = 0.004), 4.7% (0.96 [0.95, 0.98], P = 0.002), and 2.7% (0.97 [0.95, 0.98], P = 0.002) in the association between SGLT2 inhibition and the risk of HF, CAD, and MI, respectively. For low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, the proportion mediated of the mediating effect was 2.2% for HF (OR 0.98 [95% CI 0.98, 0.99], P = 0.003), 8.6% for CAD (0.93 [0.91, 0.95], P = 5.74 × 10-4), and 5.0% for MI (0.95 [0.94, 0.96], P = 6.97 × 10-4). For non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, the proportion mediated of the mediating effect was 3.4% for HF (OR 0.98 [95% CI 0.97, 0.98], P = 4.42 × 10-6), 11.8% for CAD (0.92 [0.90, 0.93], P = 7.23 × 10-8), 5.7% for MI (0.94 [0.92, 0.95], P = 8.17 × 10-7), 1.5% for AS (0.98 [0.98, 0.99], P = 0.001), and 1.4% for IS (0.98 [0.98, 0.99], P = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed the association of SGLT2 inhibition with the reduced risk of CVDs and blood lipids might mediate this association.

BACKGROUND: With aging, white adipose tissue (WAT) undergoes distribution change and browning inhibition, which could be attenuated by exercise. Adipokine chemerin exerts roles in the above changes of WAT, and our previous studies demonstrated the effect of decreased chemerin on exercise-induced improvement of glucose and lipid metabolism in high fat diet (HFD) feeding male mice, so this study is to clarify whether chemerin's effects on glucose and lipid metabolism are associated with the distribution and browning of WAT. METHODS: After diet and exercise interventions, body weight and adipose tissue contents in different depots of male mice were weighed, body composition and energy metabolism parameters were determined by Echo MRI Body Composition Analyzer and metabolic cage, respectively. The levels of serum adiponectin and leptin were detected by ELISA, and the protein levels of PGC-1α, UCP1, adiponectin and leptin in WAT were measured by Western blot. RESULTS: Chemerin knockout exacerbated HFD-induced weight gain, upregulated the increases of visceral and subcutaneous WAT (vWAT and sWAT, especial in sWAT), and inhibited WAT browning, but improved blood lipid. Exercise reduced the body weight and WAT distribution, increased sWAT browning and further improved blood lipid in aged HFD male mice, which were abrogated by chemerin knockout. Detrimental alterations of leptin, adiponectin and adiponectin/leptin ratio were discovered in the serum and WAT of aged HFD chemerin(-/-) mice; and exercise-induced beneficial changes in these adipokines were blocked by chemerin knockout. CONCLUSION: Chemerin influences blood lipid of aged male mice under HFD and exercise states through regulating the distribution and browning of WAT, which might be related to the changes of adiponectin, leptin and adiponectin/leptin ratio.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis is a widely prevalent cause of pain and disability among older adults. It is an incurable condition, and most treatments are aimed at alleviating symptoms. AIM: This study aimed to investigate the impact of statins on osteoarthritis by using a two-sample Mendelian randomization approach, using genetic variants associated with statin use as instrumental variables. METHOD: Information on single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with statin medication was obtained from the FinnGen study, and data on osteoarthritis were sourced from the UK Biobank. The inverse variance weighted method was used as the primary analytical approach for the Mendelian randomization analysis. Sensitivity analyses were conducted to evaluate horizontal pleiotropy and heterogeneity. To examine the genetic relationship between statins and osteoarthritis, linkage disequilibrium score regression-based estimates were used. RESULTS: Mendelian randomization analysis indicated a positive effect of statin use on the treatment of osteoarthritis (odds ratio 0.951, 95% confidence interval 0.914-0.99, p < 0.05). This conclusion was supported by various Mendelian randomization methods. Sensitivity analyses revealed no significant directional pleiotropy or influential single nucleotide polymorphisms that could compromise the overall causal inference. Linkage disequilibrium score regression-based estimates suggested a modest genetic correlation between statin use and osteoarthritis (Rg = 0.098, Se = 0.034, p < 0.05), thus reinforcing the robustness of the Mendelian randomization analysis. CONCLUSION: Statins reduce the risk of osteoarthritis, aligning with the results of observational studies. Further research is essential to validate these results and explore the underlying mechanisms in detail.

Sargassum fusiforme is a brown seaweed that grows abundantly along the rocky coastlines of Asian countries. The polysaccharides derived from Sargassum fusiforme (SFPS) have received much interest due to their various bioactivities, such as hypolipidemic, hypoglycemic, and antioxidant activities. In this study, we extracted and purified SFPS, and obtained the ultrasonic degradation product (SFPSUD). The lipid regulatory effects of SFPS and SFPSUD were investigated in a zebrafish model fed a high-fat diet. The results showed that SFPS significantly decreased the levels of total cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides (TG), and increased the activities of lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and hepatic lipase (HL). SFPSUD was more effective than the SFPS in reducing the TC and TG levels in zebrafish, as well as increasing the LPL and HL activities. Histopathological observations of zebrafish livers showed that SFPSUD significantly improved lipid metabolism disorder in the hepatocytes. The possible lipid-lowering mechanism in zebrafish associated with SFPS and SFPSUD may involve acceleration of the lipid metabolism rate by increasing the activities of LPL and HL. Thus, SFPSUD could be tested as a highly effective hypolipidemic drug. Our results suggest that SFPS and SFPSUD have potential uses as functional foods for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia. Ultrasound can be effectively applied to degrade SFPS to improve its physicochemical properties and bioactivities.

This study aims to investigate the correlation between plasma fat-soluble vitamin levels and blood lipid in elderly patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). A total of 120 participants were enrolled, including 60 CHD patients and 60 controls without CHD. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) was used to quantify plasma levels of vitamins A, D3, E, and K. Data analysis was conducted using the statistical analysis system module of MetaboAnalyst 5.0. The CHD group showed significantly higher levels of plasma total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) but not high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) compared to controls. The CHD group exhibited significantly higher plasma levels of VA and VE, positively correlating with TC, TG, and LDL-C. After adjusted by TG levels, the CHD group had significantly lower plasma levels of VA and VE, negatively correlating with TC, TG, and LDL-C. The CHD group also had significantly lower concentrations of VD3, independent of TG modification, compared to controls. VD3 negatively correlated with TC, TG, and LDL-C. Elderly individuals with CHD display abnormal blood lipid metabolism, and fat-soluble vitamins adjusted by TG levels can more accurately and timely response to implicit fat-soluble vitamins deficiency in CHD patients.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore the application of cardiopulmonary exercise testing in coronary artery disease (CAD) patients, evaluate its impact on exercise ability and cardiopulmonary function in patients with coronary heart disease (CHD), and promote the application of cardiopulmonary exercise testing in CAD management. METHODS: Fifty CHD patients after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) were recruited and randomly enrolled into the control (Ctrl) group and intervention (Int) group. Routine health education and health education combined with RT training were carried out for the two groups. Blood lipid levels and lung function were compared between the two groups after intervention. Cardiac function was evaluated by Doppler ultrasonography, and cardiopulmonary fitness and exercise ability were evaluated by a cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET). The self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) and self-rating depression scale (SDS) were employed to evaluate negative emotions. The 36-item short-form (SF-36) was adopted to evaluate quality of life. RESULT: Compared with those in the Ctrl group, the levels of serum total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TGs), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) decreased in the Int group, while the levels of high-density lipoprotein increased (P < 0.05). The quantitative load results showed that compared with the Ctrl group, the heart rate (HR) and self-perceived fatigue degree of the Int group decreased, and the ST segment increased (P < 0.05). Compared with the Ctrl group, the left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), forced expiratory volume at 1 s (FEV1), ratio of forced expiratory volume to forced vital volume (FEV1/FVC%), and maximum chase volume (MVV) increased in the Int group, while the left ventricular end diastolic diameter and left ventricular end contractile diameter decreased (P < 0.05). The results of the CPET showed that compared with the Ctrl group, minute ventilation/carbon dioxide production slope, VE/VCO2 - Peak, anaerobic threshold (AT), peak oxygen pulse (VO2/HR peak), oxygen uptake efficiency platform (OUEP), increasing power exercise time (IPEt), HR recovery 1 min after exercise, peak load power (Watt peak), and value metabolic equivalent (Watt peak) increased in the Int group (P < 0.05). Compared with the Ctrl group, the SAS and SDS scores in the Int group decreased (P < 0.05). The results of the quality of life evaluation showed that compared with the Ctrl group, the score of the SF-36 dimensions increased in the Int group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: RT training can reduce postoperative blood lipid and quantitative load levels in CAD patients and improve adverse mood. Furthermore, it can improve patients' cardiopulmonary function, cardiopulmonary fitness, exercise ability, and quality of life.

Lipid profiles are influenced by both noise and genetic variants. However, little is known about the associations of occupational noise and genetic variants with age-related changes in blood lipids, a crucial event in the initiation and evolution of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. We aimed to evaluate the associations of blood lipid change rates with occupational noise and genetic variants in stress hormone biosynthesis-based genes. This cohort was established in 2012 and 2013 and was followed up until 2017. A total of 952 participants were included in the final analysis and all of them were categorized to two groups, the exposed group and control group, according to the exposed noise levels in their working area. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in stress hormone biosynthesis-based genes were genotyped. Five physical examinations were conducted from 2012 to 2017 and lipid measurements were repeated five times. The estimated annual changes (EACs) of blood lipid were calculated as the difference in blood lipid levels between any 2 adjacent examinations divided by their time interval (year). The generalized estimating equations for repeated measures analyses with exchangeable correlation structures were used to evaluate the influence of exposing to noise (versus being a control) and the SNPs mentioned above on the EACs of blood lipids. We found that the participants experienced accelerated age-related decline in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels as they were exposed to noise (ß = -0.38, 95% confidence interval (CI), -0.66 to -0.10, P = 0.007), after adjusting for work duration, gender, smoking, alcohol consumption, and pack-years. This trend was only found in participants with COMT-rs165815 TT genotype (ß = -1.19, 95% CI, -1.80 to -0.58, P < 0.001), but not in those with the CC or CT genotypes. The interaction of noise exposure and rs165815 was marginally significant (Pinteraction = 0.010) after multiple adjustments. Compared with DDC-rs11978267 AA genotype carriers, participants carrying rs11978267 GG genotype had decreased EAC of triglycerides (TG) (ß = -5.06, 95% CI, -9.07 to -1.05, P = 0.013). Participants carrying DBH-rs4740203 CC genotype had increased EAC of total cholesterol (TC) (ß = 1.19, 95% CI, 0.06 to 2.33, P = 0.039). However, these findings were not statistically significant after multiple adjustments. These results indicated that Occupational noise exposure was associated with accelerated age-related decreases in HDL-C levels, and the COMT-rs165815 genotype appeared to modify the effect of noise exposure on HDL-C changes among the occupational population.

This study aimed to explore the gut microbiota characteristics of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke patients. A case-control study was conducted, and high-throughput sequencing of the V4-V5 region of 16S rRNA was used to analyze the differences in gut microbiota. The results showed that Proteobacteria was significantly increased in the ischemic stroke group compared with the healthy control group, while Fusobacteria was significantly increased in the hemorrhagic stroke group. In the ischemic stroke group, Butyricimonas, Alloprevotella, and Escherichia were significantly more abundant than in the healthy control group. In the hemorrhagic stroke group, Atopobium, Hungatella, Eisenbergiella, Butyricimonas, Odonbacter, Lachnociostridium, Alistipes, Parabacteroides, and Fusobacterium were significantly more abundant than in the healthy control group. Additionally, Alloprevotella, Ruminococcus, and Prevotella were significantly more abundant in the ischemic stroke group than in the hemorrhagic stroke group. The gut microbiota of ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke patients has significant diversity characteristics. These results provide new theoretical basis for exploring the prevention and treatment of different types of stroke through gut microbiota research.

Observational studies indicate that serum sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) levels are inversely correlated with blood lipid levels and coronary heart disease (CHD) risk. Given that dyslipidemia is an established risk factor for CHD, we aim to employ Mendelian randomization (MR) in conjunction with mediation analysis to confirm the mediating role of blood lipid levels in the association between SHBG and CHD. First, we assessed the causality between serum SHBG levels and five cardiovascular diseases using univariable MR. The results revealed causality between SHBG levels and reduced risk of CHD, myocardial infarction, as well as hypertension. Specifically, the most significant reduction was observed in CHD risk, with an odds ratio of 0.73 (95% CI 0.63-0.86) for each one-standard-deviation increase in SHBG. The summary-level data of serum SHBG levels and CHD are derived from a sex-specific genome-wide association study (GWAS) conducted by UK Biobank (sample size = 368,929) and a large-scale GWAS meta-analysis (60,801 cases and 123,504 controls), respectively. Subsequently, we further investigated the mediating role of blood lipid level in the association between SHBG and CHD. Mediation analysis clarified the mediation proportions for four mediators: high cholesterol (48%), very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (25.1%), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (18.5%), and triglycerides (44.3%). Summary-level data for each mediator were sourced from the UK Biobank and publicly available GWAS. The above results confirm negative causality between serum SHBG levels and the risk of CHD, myocardial infarction, and hypertension, with the causal effect on reducing CHD risk largely mediated by the improvement of blood lipid profiles.

Recognizing the risk factors for dyslipidemia during pregnancy is crucial for safeguarding the health of both the mothers and the offspring. Growing evidence emerged and suggested links between environmental factors, including metals, and alteration in lipid levels or dyslipidemia in general populations. However, knowledge of the associations during pregnancy remains extremely lacking. Herein, we aimed to explore whether elevated metal exposure constitutes a risk factor for dyslipidemia in pregnant women. Based on the Tongji-Shuangliu Birth Cohort (TSBC), a total of 663 pregnant women were recruited and their urinary levels of 17 metals and blood lipid biomarkers in early pregnancy were measured, namely triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C). The multivariable linear regression models revealed that exposure to selected metals during early pregnancy was significantly associated with some important biomarkers. In particular, after natural log-transformed for the levels of lipid biomarkers and metals, copper (Cu) exposure was positively associated with HDL-C (ß = 0.024, 95% CI: 0.001, 0.046), while zinc (Zn) was associated with TG (ß = 0.062, 95% CI: 0.013, 0.110) and selenium with TC (ß = 0.028, 95% CI: 0.004, 0.054). Exposure to rubidium (Rb) was positively associated with multiple lipid biomarkers, including HDL-C (ß = 0.020, 95% CI: 0.002, 0.037) and LDL-C (ß = 0.022, 95% CI: 0.001, 0.042). Mixture exposure analysis further identified significant associations between Cu and HDL-C, Zn and TG, Rb and HDL-C, when multiple metal exposures were considered in the Bayesian kernel machine regression model simultaneously. Our findings showed that exposure to several metals during early pregnancy was associated with an increased prevalence of blood lipid abnormalities in pregnant women. These findings underscore the potential impact of metal combinations on lipid metabolism and increase our understanding of the risk factors associated with abnormal lipid metabolism during pregnancy.
