RESUMO

Since its coinage ca. 1850 AD by Philip Barker Webb, the biogeographical region of Macaronesia, consisting of the North Atlantic volcanic archipelagos of the Azores, Madeira with the tiny Selvagens, the Canaries and Cabo Verde, and for some authors different continental coastal strips, has been under dispute. Herein, after a brief introduction on the terminology and purpose of regionalism, we recover the origins of the Macaronesia name, concept and geographical adscription, as well as its biogeographical implications and how different authors have positioned themselves, using distinct terrestrial or marine floristic and/or faunistic taxa distributions and relationships for accepting or rejecting the existence of this biogeographical region. Four main issues related to Macaronesia are thoroughly discussed: (i) its independence from the Mediterranean phytogeographical region; (ii) discrepancies according to different taxa analysed; (iii) its geographical limits and the role of the continental enclave(s), and, (iv) the validity of the phytogeographical region level. We conclude that Macaronesia has its own identity and a sound phytogeographical foundation, and that this is mainly based on three different floristic components that are shared by the Macaronesian core (Madeira and the Canaries) and the outermost archipelagos (Azores and Cabo Verde). These floristic components are: (i) the Palaeotropical-Tethyan Geoflora, formerly much more widely distributed in Europe and North Africa and currently restricted to the three northern archipelagos (the Azores, Madeira and the Canaries); (ii) the African Rand Flora, still extant in the coastal margins of Africa and Arabia, and present in the southern archipelagos (Madeira, the Canaries and Cabo Verde), and (iii) the Macaronesian neoendemic floristic component, represented in all the archipelagos, a result of allopatric diversification promoted by isolation of Mediterranean ancestors that manage to colonize Central Macaronesia and, from there, the outer archipelagos. Finally, a differentiating floristic component recently colonized the different archipelagos from the nearest continental coast, providing them with different biogeographic flavours.

Human-induced pressures have led to substantial changes in marine ecosystems worldwide, with the introduction of non-indigenous species (NIS) emerging as a significant threat to ecological, economic, and social aspects. The Macaronesian islands, comprising the Azores, Madeira, Canary Islands, and Cabo Verde archipelagos, are regions where the regional economy is dependent on marine resources (e.g., marine traffic, ecotourism and fisheries). Despite their importance, concerted efforts to manage marine biological invasions in Macaronesia have been scarce. In this context, the current study aims to contribute to the much-needed debate on biosecurity measures in this unique insular ecosystem to prevent and mitigate the impact of NIS. By adhering to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) criteria, this work validated and analyzed 260 documents providing insights into the management of NIS in Macaronesia until 2022. These documents revealed the presence of 29 Invasive Alien Species (IAS), most of which are misconceptions regarding this terminology. Most studies focused on the stages of early detection, rapid response, and eradication across the archipelagos. Cabo Verde had comparatively fewer studies. The most common techniques include monitoring/sampling, literature reviews, and taxonomic reviews. NIS introduction pathways were mainly attributed to transport (stowaway) and unaided migration, with ship fouling, ballast water, rafting, ocean currents, and tropicalization being also identified as significant contributors. This systematic review highlights the current efforts to establish robust biosecurity protocols in Macaronesia and emphasizes the urgent need to safeguard the region's ecological, economic, and social well-being.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) officially certified Cabo Verde as a malaria-free country in January 2024, marking a key milestone in world health and demonstrating the efficacy of comprehensive malaria control programs. Cabo Verde is only the third country in the WHO African region to have achieved this designation, highlighting the potential for other nations to successfully eradicate malaria. Despite encountering hurdles like drug-resistant strains and COVID-19 disruptions, Cabo Verde's success after years of strategic planning and multisectoral collaboration highlights the value of long-term public health initiatives. To emulate this achievement, African countries must take a holistic approach that includes strong leadership, effective monitoring systems, and community engagement. Leveraging current resources and embracing breakthroughs, such as the recent introduction of malaria vaccinations, will be critical to achieving a malaria-free Africa. Countries that integrate socioeconomic development into malaria eradication efforts might reduce the burden of malaria on vulnerable communities while also driving progress towards larger development goals. Cabo Verde's success serves as an example of the continent's malaria fight, emphasizing the significance of long-term vigilance, adaptability, and collaborative action in realizing a common goal of a malaria-free future.

Mosquitoes play a critical role as vectors of pathogens affecting both humans and animals. Therefore, understanding their biodiversity and distribution is crucial to developing evidence-based vector control strategies. The current study updated the composition and distribution of mosquito species through a comprehensive survey of all municipalities of Cabo Verde. From October 2017 to September 2018, mosquito larvae and pupae were collected from 814 aquatic habitats. Anopheles gambiae (Giles, 1902) and Culex pipiens (Linnaeus, 1758) complexes were subjected to PCR-based techniques for sibling species identification. Ten mosquito species from 5 genera were identified: Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762), Aedes caspius (Pallas, 1771), Anopheles arabiensis (Patton, 1905), Anopheles pretoriensis (Theobald, 1903), Culex bitaeniorhynchus (Giles, 1901), Cx. pipiens, Culex quinquefasciatus (Say, 1823), Culex tritaeniorhynchus (Giles, 1901), Culiseta longiareolata (Macquart, 1838), and Lutzia tigripes (de Grandpre & de Charmoy, 1901). Santiago Island reported the highest number of species (n = 8). Ae. aegypti and Cx. quinquefasciatus were the most widely distributed species across the country. An. arabiensis was the sole species identified within the An. gambiae complex. The findings from our study will help guide health policy decisions to effectively control mosquito-borne diseases.

Mosquito-borne diseases can pose significant burdens. In many countries, they pose a risk to national economies and the well-being of humans and animals. To mitigate this, mosquito surveillance is crucial to assess the real and potential transmission of mosquito-borne diseases. Between 2020 and 2023, mosquito larvae were collected from both indoor and outdoor breeding sites in urban and rural areas of 4 municipalities of Santiago and Boavista Islands in Cabo Verde. Mosquitoes were identified morphologically and by polymerase chain reaction-based techniques that targeted the mitochondrial cytochrome C oxidase subunit I sequence. During this period, 6,825 breeding sites were assessed, and of 8,094 mosquito specimens screened, 194 specimens of Culex thalassius were identified for the first time in the country in 4 municipalities of Santiago and Boavista Islands. This new finding highlights the importance of including entomological surveillance in health systems. Although this species has only been detected on a few islands, it is important to continuously monitor it to determine its distribution, spread/dispersal, density, and potential involvement in pathogen transmission.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the investigation was to evaluate past 12-month suicidal behaviour (PSB) among adults in Cabo Verde. METHODS: Data from 4,563 adults (mean age 41.4 years) that participated in the 2020 Cabo Verde STEPS survey were analysed. RESULTS: Results indicate that the proportion of PSB (attempt 0.6%, plan 1.5% and ideation 3.3%) was 3.7% (2.4% men/5.0% women). In adjusted logistic regression analysis, younger age, female sex, unemployed, widowed or divorced, alcohol family problem, heart attack, angina or stroke, current smokeless tobacco use and low fruit/vegetable intake were associated with PSB. CONCLUSION: Almost 4% of participants had PSB and several associated factors were identified that can guide public health interventions.

In this study we found that endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) were omnipresent in a tropical seabird community comprising diverse ecological guilds and distinct foraging and trophic preferences. Because EDCs tend to bioaccumulate within the food web and microplastics can absorb and release harmful chemical compounds, our findings draw attention to the potential threats to wildlife. Thus, the goal of this study was to investigate the role of plastic ingestion, trophic and foraging patterns (δ15N and δ13C) of five tropical seabird species breeding in sympatry, on the exposure to EDCs, namely Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), methoxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers (MeO-PBDEs) and personal care products (PCPs, e.g., musk fragrances and UV-filters). Results indicated that microplastics occurrence and EDCs detection frequency varied among species. Microplastics occurrence was higher in species with dual and coastal foraging strategies. Preen oil had higher levels of MeO-PBDEs and PCPs, while serum had higher levels of PBDEs. In brown boobies, the correlation between microplastics and ∑PBDEs levels was significant, suggesting that microplastics ingestion is a key PBDEs route. Trophic position (δ15N) plays a key role in PBDEs accumulation, particularly in Bulwer's petrel, which occupies a high trophic position and had more specialized feeding ecology than the other species. MeO-PBDEs were linked to foraging habitat (δ13C), although the link to foraging locations deserves further investigation. Overall, our findings not only fill key gaps in our understanding of seabirds' exposure to microplastics and EDCs, but also provide an essential baseline for future research and monitoring efforts. These findings have broader implications for the marine wildlife conservation and pollution management in sensitive environments, such as the tropical regions off West Africa.

Plastic pollution is a global environmental issue affecting multiple ecosystems, namely sea turtle nesting grounds. We analysed the potential chemical contamination caused by plastic debris in loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) nests, focusing on polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs, a class of flame retardants). For that, we conducted a field experiment in a turtle hatchery (Cabo Verde) by placing plastic fragments in the nests at two depths: surface and ~20 cm. We evaluated the nests' success and quantified the levels of PBDEs in the sand using GC-MS/MS. Our results suggest that plastics on the nests' surface can leak contaminants, infiltrating the sand up to 20 cm. Buried plastics showed no relevant leakage of chemicals. While hatching and emergence success was unaffected, we found a relationship between leucistic embryos and contamination levels. Our study highlights the threats of plastic accumulation on beaches, which can potentially leak chemicals and contaminate turtle nests.

Fisheries bycatch is a critical threat to sea turtle populations worldwide, particularly because turtles are vulnerable to multiple gear types. The Canary Current is an intensely fished region, yet there has been no demographic assessment integrating bycatch and population management information of the globally significant Cabo Verde loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) population. Using Boa Vista island (Eastern Cabo Verde) subpopulation data from capture-recapture and nest monitoring (2013-2019), we evaluated population viability and estimated regional bycatch rates (2016-2020) in longline, trawl, purse-seine, and artisanal fisheries. We further evaluated current nesting trends in the context of bycatch estimates, existing hatchery conservation measures, and environmental (net primary productivity) variability in turtle foraging grounds. We projected that current bycatch mortality rates would lead to the near extinction of the Boa Vista subpopulation. Bycatch reduction in longline fisheries and all fisheries combined would increase finite population growth rate by 1.76% and 1.95%, respectively. Hatchery conservation increased hatchling production and reduced extinction risk, but alone it could not achieve population growth. Short-term increases in nest counts (2013-2021), putatively driven by temporary increases in net primary productivity, may be masking ongoing long-term population declines. When fecundity was linked to net primary productivity, our hindcast models simultaneously predicted these opposing long-term and short-term trends. Consequently, our results showed conservation management must diversify from land-based management. The masking effect we found has broad-reaching implications for monitoring sea turtle populations worldwide, demonstrating the importance of directly estimating adult survival and that nest counts might inadequately reflect underlying population trends.


Impactos demográficos ocultos de la pesca y determinantes ambientales de la fecundidad en una población de tortugas marinas Resumen La captura accidental de las pesquerías es una amenaza importante para la población mundial de tortugas marinas pues estos reptiles son vulnerables a muchos tipos de artes de pesca. Aunque la Corriente de Canarias es una zona de pesca intensa, no se han realizado análisis demográficos que integren información de la captura accidental y el manejo poblacional de la tortuga caguama de Cabo Verde (Caretta caretta), una población de importancia mundial. Usamos datos de captura-recaptura y monitoreo de nidos (2013-2019) de la subpoblación de la isla Boa Vista (Cabo Verde occidental) para evaluar la viabilidad poblacional y además estimamos el volumen de captura accidental a nivel regional (2016-2020) de las pesquerías de palangre, arrastre, red de cerco y artesanal. También analizamos las tendencias de la anidación en el contexto de las estimas actuales de captura accidental, del posible impacto del traslado de las puestas a viveros y de la variabilidad ambiental (productividad primaria neta) en la zona donde se alimentan las tortugas. Proyectamos que, de persistir, la tasa actual de mortalidad por captura accidental llevaría a la subpoblación de Boa Vista al borde de la extinción. La reducción de la captura accidental en la flota de palangre incrementaría la tasa finita de crecimiento poblacional en un 1.76% y la reducción en todas las flotas un 1.95%. El traslado de las puestas a viveros incrementó la producción de crías y redujo el riesgo de extinción, pero no logra el crecimiento poblacional por sí solo. Los incrementos a corto plazo en el conteo de nidos (2013-2021), causados posiblemente por los incrementos temporales en la productividad primaria neta, pueden estar ocultando un declive poblacional. Cuando relacionamos la fecundidad con la productividad primaria neta, nuestros modelos retrospectivos pronosticaron correctamente ambas tendencias, a corto y largo plazo. Como consecuencia, nuestros resultados mostraron que la gestión de la conservación debe diversificarse más allá de las medidas aplicadas durante la fase terrestre. Los efectos ocultos que descubrimos tienen implicaciones generales para el monitoreo de las poblaciones de tortugas marinas en otras partes del mundo, lo que demuestra la importancia de la estimación directa de la supervivencia de adultos y que el conteo de nidos podría no refleja correctamente las tendencias poblacionales subyacentes.

Overfishing has been drastically changing food webs in marine ecosystems, and it is pivotal to quantify these changes at the ecosystem level. This is especially important for ecosystems with a high diversity of top predators such as the Eastern Atlantic marine region. In this work we used high-throughput sequencing methods to describe the diet of the two most abundant tuna species, the Skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) and the Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares), highly targeted by fisheries off west Africa. We also explored prey diversity overlap between these tuna species and the seabird species breeding in Cabo Verde that are most likely to share prey preferences and suffer from bycatch, the Brown booby (Sula leucogaster) and Cape Verde shearwater (Calonectris edwardsii). Overall, the diet of both tuna species was more diverse than that of seabirds. Skipjack tuna diet was dominated by prey from lower trophic levels, such as krill, anchovies, and siphonophores, while the Yellowfin tuna diet was mainly based on epipelagic fish such as flying and halfbeak fishes. Some of the most abundant prey families detected in the Yellowfin tuna diet were shared with both seabird species, resulting in a high prey diversity overlap between this tuna species and seabirds These results have implications for the management of tuna fisheries in the Eastern Tropical Atlantic, because a large decrease of both tuna species might have cascading effects on both primary and secondary consumer levels, and the decrease of these underwater predators may have implications on the viability of tropical seabird populations.

Invasive species disrupt relations between endemics and their ecosystem and are an increasing biodiversity conservation problem. The Hemidactylus genus comprises the most successful invasive reptile species, including the worldwide-distributed Hemidactylus mabouia. In this study, we used 12S and ND2 sequences to taxonomically identify and tentatively determine the diversity and origin of these invaders in Cabo Verde while also clarifying this for several Western Indian Ocean (WIO) populations. By comparing our sequences to recently published ones, we showed, for the first time, that Cabo Verde individuals belong to the H. mabouia sensu stricto lineage and that both of its sublineages (a and b) occur there. Both haplotypes are also in Madeira, which indicates a connection between these archipelagos, possibly related to the past Portuguese trading routes. Across the WIO, results clarified the identity of many island and coastal populations, showing that this likely invasive H. mabouia lineage is widespread in the region, including northern Madagascar, with important conservation implications. Colonisation origins were difficult to access due to the wide geographical spread of these haplotypes; thus, several possible scenarios were outlined. The introduction of this species throughout western and eastern Africa may threaten endemic taxa and needs to be closely monitored.

Cabo Verde reported the first case of COVID-19 on March 19, 2020. Containment measures were quickly implemented and over 80,000 COVID-19 tests were performed in 2020 with 11,840 confirmed infections (2% of the population) and 154 deaths. In a setting where the last locally acquired malaria case was reported in January 2018, any interruptions to malaria care-seeking have the potential for infections to go untreated and transmission re-establishing. This work aims to determine whether there was any change in the number of people seeking care or being tested for malaria and, using an interrupted time series analysis, identify if any change was associated with implemented COVID-19 measures. Routinely collected surveillance data for outpatient visits, testing for malaria and COVID-19 were aggregated by month for each health facility (outpatient and malaria) or by municipality (COVID-19) from 2017 through 2020. The timeline of COVID-19 measures was generated based on when and where they were implemented. Results show that there was a marked shift in care-seeking in Cabo Verde. Overall, the mean number of observed outpatient visits decreased from 2,057 visits per month during 2017-2019 to 1,088 in 2020, an estimated 28% reduction. However, malaria testing rates per 1,000 outpatient visits after the pandemic began increased by 8% compared to expected trends. Results suggest that the pandemic impacted care-seeking but led to a non-significant increase in testing for malaria per 1,000 outpatient visits. With the cessation of international travel, the risk of imported infections seeding new transmission declined suggesting the risk of undetected transmission was low. It is important for countries to understand their specific malaria risks and vulnerabilities in order to ensure that any progress towards the interruption of malaria transmission can be sustained.

Background: COVID-19, or the new coronavirus, has spread globally since its emergence in December 2019, bringing enormous global health and socioeconomic challenges. Egypt confirmed the first case of COVID-19 in Africa on February 14, 2020, while Cabo Verde confirmed the first case on March 19, 2020. Contrary to forecasts that the virus would swiftly spread throughout Africa, which would soon become the infection's epicenter, the evolution of the pandemic on the continent over the investigated time period has been slower than expected. Objective: This study aims to comprehend the progression and consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic in Cabo Verde during its first six months of existence. After the first confirmed case of the new coronavirus, on March 19, 2020, the government of Cabo Verde closed its international borders. Consequently, a state of emergency was declared with stringent restrictions on the movement of persons and goods. Additionally, facilities for the isolation of sick individuals, including field hospitals, had been established. To aid the most vulnerable, public and private organisations had organized fundraising drives. Results: Despite the use of mitigation techniques, the pandemic in Cabo Verde has caused severe socioeconomic harm. It is crucial to preserve and strengthen active surveillance, infection control, and risk communication methods. Social protection policies and economic incentives have the potential to boost infection control strategies.

BACKGROUND: Reducing alcohol consumption and improving urban planning in African cities are public health priorities. The aim of this study was to explore gender and age differences in recreational activity participation and its link with self-reported alcohol consumption in three urban areas of Praia. METHODS: A questionnaire was applied to a probabilistic sample of 1912 adults, with a median age of 35.0 (IQR: 26.0-48.8) years, living in informal, transition, and formal areas of the capital of Cabo Verde. RESULTS: More than 80% of the participants reported rarely or never participating in recreational activities. Going daily or weekly to the café was the most reported recreational activity, regardless of the urban area. Participation in recreational activities was higher in men than women, decreasing with age in both cases. Alcohol consumption was significantly higher in men than women (72.4% versus 47.4%, p < 0.001). Multiple logistic regression models showed that going at least once to the bar/nightclub (for men and women) and going to the café (for women) were associated with alcohol consumption. Furthermore, age (for women), in a protective way, and having children (for men) appeared to be associated with alcohol consumption. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides new data on the recreational environment in Praia and can contribute to the development of local and national public health policies and interventions in line with several SDGs to reduce alcohol consumption, enhance healthy leisure/recreation practices, and promote better living conditions for its inhabitants.

The use of medicinal plants in a variety of health conditions remains essential for the discovery of new treatments. The present study aimed to investigate the bioactive properties of three native plants from Cabo Verde Islands, namely Artemisia gorgonum Webb, Sideroxylon marginatum (Decne. ex Webb) Cout., and Tamarix senegalensis DC., contributing to the characterization of less-known medicinal plants and their potential benefits for human health. Known compounds, such as kaempferol, quercetin, caffeyolquinic, and apigenin derivatives, among others, were detected in the plant species under study. Overall, all species demonstrated good antioxidant capacity, especially the ethanolic extracts of A. gorgonum (EC50 = 0.149 mg/mL) in TBARS assay. Moreover, the ethanolic extracts of the studied plants showed cytotoxic properties against tumor cells, and again the A. gorgonum extract proved to be the most effective in inhibiting tumor growth, mainly in the CaCO2 (GI50 = 17.3 µg/mL) and AGS (GI50 = 18.2 µg/mL) cell lines. Only the ethanolic extracts of T. senegalensis and S. marginatum demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity, albeit weak (EC50 = 35 and 43 µg/mL, respectively). The present study contributed to increased knowledge about the bioactive properties of these plants commonly used in traditional medicine, some of which was discussed for the first time, opening new perspectives for their use in a wider range of health conditions, especially in African countries, where access to modern health care is more limited.

This article provides evidence about profile of persons with disabilities in Cabo Verde, their Knowledge, attitudes and practice and their bio-behavioural vulnerability to HIV/AIDS. The Cape verdian population was estimated to be 537,661 inhabitants in 2020, with an HIV prevalence of about 0.6% in the general population. Data were collected from 5 islands and 8 municipalities with a proportion of people with disabilities greater than or equal to 5%. A total of 682 persons participated in the study, and 653 People with Disabilities (PwDs) were tested for HIV. The HIV prevalence rate was 2.3% (3.5% in men; 1.7% in women), and the most prevalent type of virus is HIV1. Over 90% PwDs have access to information about HIV. Most of PwDs (85.8%) have had sex and known protection methods against HIV, although there are some misconceptions and beliefs. About 80.0% never participated in HIV/AIDS prevention activities, and 96.3% said that their participation gave them a better understanding about HIV and AIDS. About 79% were unaware of the existence of HIV care, support and prevention facilities, and 36.7% do not know of any place for HIV screening. This first study in Cabo Verde highlights the reality about PwDs social and environmental situation.

DNA metabarcoding is widely used to characterize the diet of species, and it becomes very relevant for biodiversity conservation, allowing the understanding of trophic chains and the impact of invasive species. The need for cost-effective biodiversity monitoring methods fostered advances in this technique. One question that arises is which sample type provides a better diet representation.Therefore, with this study, we intended to evaluate if there were differences in diet estimates according to the section of the gastrointestinal tract analysed and which section(s) provided the best diet representation. Additionally, we intended to infer the ecological/economic impacts of an invader as a model of the potential effects in an originally mammal-free ecosystem.We examined the gut contents of the house mouse Mus musculus introduced to Cabo Verde, considering three sections: stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. We applied a DNA-metabarcoding approach using two genetic markers, one specific for plants and another for invertebrates.We showed that this invader consumed 131 taxa (73 plants and 58 invertebrates). We obtained significant differences in the composition of two of the three sections, with a higher incidence of invertebrates in the stomach and plants in the intestines. This may be due to stomach inhibitors acting on plants and/or to faster absorption of soft-body invertebrates compared to the plant fibers in the intestines. We verified that the impact of this invader in the ecosystem is predominantly negative, as at least 50% of the ingested items were native, endemic, or economically important taxa, and only 19% of the diet items were exotics.Overall, results showed the need to analyse only two gastrointestinal tract sections to obtain robust diet data, increasing the cost-effectiveness of the method. Furthermore, by uncovering the native taxa most frequently preyed on by mice, this DNA-metabarcoding approach allowed us to evaluate efficiently which are at the highest risk.


O metabarcoding de ADN é amplamente utilizado para a caracterização da dieta de espécies, e tornou­se bastante relevante para a conservação da biodiversidade, permitindo a compreensão sobre cadeias tróficas e o impacto de espécies invasoras. A necessidade de métodos de monitorização da biodiversidade com uma boa relação custo­benefício fomentaram avanços nesta técnica. Uma questão que se coloca é qual o tipo de amostra que fornece uma melhor representação da dieta. Deste modo, com este estudo, pretendemos avaliar se existem diferenças nas estimativas da dieta de acordo com a secção do tracto gastrointestinal analisada e qual(is) a(s) secção(ões) que proporciona(m) uma melhor representação da dieta. Adicionalmente, pretendemos inferir os impactos ecológicos/ económicos de um invasor como um modelo dos efeitos potenciais que este pode ter num ecossistema originalmente sem mamíferos. Analisámos os conteúdos gastrointestinais do rato doméstico Mus musculus introduzido em Cabo Verde, considerando três secções: estômago, intestino delgado e intestino grosso. Aplicámos uma abordagem de metabarcoding de ADN usando dois marcadores genéticos, um específico para plantas e outro para invertebrados. Mostrámos que este invasor consumiu 131 taxa (73 plantas e 58 invertebrados). Obtivemos diferenças significativas na composição de duas das três secções, com maior incidência de invertebrados no estômago e de plantas nos intestinos. Isto pode dever­se a inibidores estomacais que agem sobre as plantas e/ ou à absorção mais rápida de invertebrados de corpo mole em comparação com as fibras vegetais nos intestinos. Verificámos que o impacto deste invasor no ecossistema é predominantemente negativo, pois pelo menos 50% dos itens ingeridos eram nativos, endémicos ou economicamente importantes e apenas 19% dos itens da dieta eram exóticos. De modo geral, os resultados mostraram a necessidade de analisar apenas duas secções do tracto gastrointestinal para obter dados robustos da dieta, aumentando a relação custo­eficácia deste método. Além disso, ao descobrir os taxa nativos mais frequentemente predados por ratos, a abordagem de metabarcoding de ADN permitiu­nos avaliar com eficiência quais estão sob maior risco.

During pelagic video transects off Santo Antão, Cabo Verde, we encountered the midwater scorpionfish Ectreposebastes imus in midwater between 300 and 800 m over a bottom depth of about 1000 m. The fish were typically positioned vertically with their heads pointing upwards. These first midwater observations of E. imus suggest migratory (potentially feeding) behaviour into the pelagic realm and hence a possible role of this species in the trophic coupling between the pelagic and benthic habitats in the deep seas of Cabo Verde and elsewhere in its global distribution.

Background: Determining the reproductive rate and how it varies over time and space (RT) provides important insight to understand transmission of a given disease and inform optimal strategies for controlling or eliminating it. Estimating RT for malaria is difficult partly due to the widespread use of interventions and immunity to disease masking incident infections. A malaria outbreak in Praia, Cabo Verde in 2017 provided a unique opportunity to estimate RT directly, providing a proxy for the intensity of vector-human contact and measure the impact of vector control measures. Methods: Out of 442 confirmed malaria cases reported in 2017 in Praia, 321 (73%) were geolocated and informed this analysis. RT was calculated using the joint likelihood of transmission between two cases, based on the time (serial interval) and physical distance (spatial interval) between them. Log-linear regression was used to estimate factors associated with changes in RT, including the impact of vector control interventions. A geostatistical model was developed to highlight areas receptive to transmission where vector control activities could be focused in future to prevent or interrupt transmission. Results: The RT from individual cases ranged between 0 and 11 with a median serial- and spatial-interval of 34 days [interquartile range (IQR): 17-52] and 1,347 m (IQR: 832-1,985 m), respectively. The number of households receiving indoor residual spraying (IRS) 4 weeks prior was associated with a reduction in RT by 0.84 [95% confidence interval (CI) 0.80-0.89; p-value <0.001] in the peak-and post-epidemic compared to the pre-epidemic period. Conclusions: Identifying the effect of reduced human-vector contact through IRS is essential to determining optimal intervention strategies that modify the likelihood of malaria transmission and can inform optimal intervention strategies to accelerate time to elimination. The distance within which two cases are plausibly linked is important for the potential scale of any reactive interventions as well as classifying infections as imported or introduced and confirming malaria elimination.
