RESUMO

Peripheral neuropathy and radiculopathy often result in skeletal muscle disorders, typically leading to muscle atrophy. Concurrent muscle hypertrophy or persistently elevated creatine kinase (CK) is rare. While muscle hypertrophy is commonly observed in myogenic diseases, such as muscular dystrophy, acromegaly, inflammatory myopathies, and hypothyroidism, reports of muscle hypertrophy caused by neuropathy are infrequent. We encountered a patient with persistently elevated CK levels and unilateral lower leg muscle hypertrophy associated with neuropathy. The patient had cauda equina syndrome symptoms and pain in the left lower leg. Lumbar spine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed central spinal stenosis, which was believed to be the cause of the symptoms. Lower-limb MRI revealed high signal intensity in the gastrocnemius muscle on fat-suppressed T2-weighted imaging. Surgical treatment improved the radiculopathy, hypertrophy, and pain in the left lower leg. During the one-year follow-up, improvement was confirmed with both MRI and nerve conduction studies. Calf muscle hypertrophy associated with neuropathy has been reported; however, no reports have demonstrated pre- and postoperative changes with MRI and nerve conduction studies. We report a patient with lower leg muscle hypertrophy and persistent CK elevation associated with neuropathy, along with a literature review.

Background: Children diagnosed with spastic diplegic Cerebral Palsy (CP) usually demonstrate hypertonicity of the lower limb muscles which affects the normal alignments and weight reception by the feet. These impairments could be correlated to the limitations in gross motor function such as standing and walking abilities. Understanding these relationships can contribute to developing more effective rehabilitation strategies and improving overall motor outcomes for affected children. Objective: The current study was designed to explore the relationship between plantar surface area, weight distribution on the plantar surface, and gross motor function (namely, standing and walking abilities) in spastic diplegic CP children. Methods: Seventy-one spastic diplegic CP children aged 8-14 years joined this cross-sectional study. The Person's correlation coefficient and regression tests were used to assess the correlation between variables, namely, Gross Motor Function (GMFM), Calf Muscle Tone, Plantar surface area (PSA), and Peak pressure on mid and hind feet (PPMF, PPHF, respectively). These variables were assessed using the GMFM-88 scale, Modified Ashworth scale, and foot scan plantar pressure detection system, respectively. Results: The correlation analysis demonstrated a strong to moderate positive correlation between PSA, PPMF, PPHF, and GMFM-D and GMFM-E. Additionally, regression model showed prediction levels equal to 0.791 for the GMFM-D and 0.720 for the GMFM-E categories, respectively. Conclusion: Standing and walking abilities were positively correlated (r ≥.6) with the increased plantar surface area and higher peak pressure on mid and hind feet in spastic diplegic CP. Future longitudinal studies should investigate changes in gross motor function in relation to improvement in plantar surface area and peak pressure values.

Food-producing animals such as dairy cattle are potential reservoirs of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), with multidrug-resistant (MDR) organisms such as Escherichia coli observed in higher frequency in young calves compared to older cattle. In this study, we characterized the genomes of enteric MDR E. coli from pre-weaned dairy calves with and without diarrhea and evaluated the influence of host-level factors on genomic composition. Whole genome sequence comparative analysis of E. coli (n = 43) revealed substantial genomic diversity that primarily clustered by sequence type and was minimally driven by calf diarrheal disease status (healthy, diarrheic, or recovered), antimicrobial exposure, and dietary zinc supplementation. Diverse AMR genes (ARGs)-including extended-spectrum beta-lactamase genes and quinolone resistance determinants-were identified (n = 40), with unique sets of ARGs co-occurring in gene clusters with large AMR plasmids IncA/C2 and IncFIB(AP001918). Zinc supplementation was not significantly associated with the selection of individual ARGs in E. coli, however analysis of ARG and metal resistance gene pairs identified positive associations between certain aminoglycoside, beta-lactam, sulfonamide, and trimethoprim ARGs with acid, tellurium and mercury resistance genes. Although E. coli in this study lacked the typical virulence factors of diarrheagenic strains, virulence genes overlapping with those in major pathotypes were identified. Among the 103 virulence genes detected, the highest abundance and diversity of genes corresponded to iron acquisition (siderophores and heme uptake). Our findings indicate that the host-level factors evaluated in this study were not key drivers of genomic variability, but that certain accessory genes in enteric MDR E. coli may be enriched. Collectively, this work provides insight into the genomic diversity and host-microbe interface of MDR E. coli from pre-weaned dairy calves.

A mass was removed surgically from the right orbit of a 1-d-old Holstein calf. Grossly, the mass filled the rostral part of an enlarged orbit and compressed the globe toward the caudal pole of the orbit. The brown, 6-cm tumor had central yellow and brown areas, and a smooth, glistening cut surface. Microscopically, the neoplasm was highly cellular and composed of spindle cells arranged in irregular, broad, interlacing streams and bundles, forming a herringbone pattern and supported by a sparse collagenous matrix. Neoplastic cells infiltrated surrounding soft tissues and compressed the globe. The neoplastic cells had positive immunolabeling for α-smooth muscle actin, desmin, and vimentin, and negative immunolabeling for factor VIII, myoglobin, cytokeratin, and skeletal muscle actin. Histopathology and immunohistochemistry results confirmed a diagnosis of leiomyosarcoma. To our knowledge, congenital periocular leiomyosarcoma has not been reported in cattle previously. This rare tumor could be included as a differential diagnosis in newborn calves with periocular masses.

After birth, the immune system is challenged by numerous elements of the extrauterine environment, reflected in fluctuations of inflammatory markers. The concentrations of these markers in the first month of life are associated with the future performance of dairy youngstock. It is thought that bacterial genera colonizing the calf intestinal tract can cause inflammation and thus affect their host's performance via immunomodulation. This study explored how the faecal microbiota of newborn dairy calves were related to inflammatory markers during the first three weeks of life, and if the abundance of specific genera was associated with first-lactation performance. Ninety-five female Holstein calves were studied. Once a week, serum and faecal samples were collected, serum concentrations of serum amyloid A, haptoglobin, tumour necrosis factor-α, and interleukin-6 were measured, and faecal microbiota composition was examined by 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Faecal Gallibacterium abundance in the first week of age and Collinsella abundance in the second week were negatively associated with inflammatory response as well as with calving-conception interval. Peptostreptococcus abundance in the second week of life was positively associated with inflammatory response and calving-conception interval, and negatively with average daily weight gain. In the third week, Dorea abundance was positively, Bilophila abundance was negatively associated with inflammatory response, and both genera were negatively associated with age at first calving. These bacterial genera may be able to influence the inflammatory response and through this, possibly the future performance of the dairy heifer. Deciphering such microbiota-host interactions can help improve calf management to benefit production and welfare.

Dairy cattle are routinely managed in social groups and subject to various management and social transitions, yet conventional approaches to rearing dairy calves limit social experience during early weeks of life. The objective of this study was to evaluate long-term effects of dairy calf social housing, with calves housed individually or in pairs, on long-term behavioral responses observed in pregnant heifers following social regrouping and introduction to a novel housing environment. Holstein heifers were raised during the milk-feeding period (provided 8 L/d milk replacer) in either individual pens (n = 20 heifers) or paired pens (n = 20 pens; 1 focal heifer/pen) and subsequently identically managed in groups on pasture from 9 weeks of age. At 30 d before expected calving, pregnant heifers were moved from pasture to a free stall barn, which represented introduction to a novel social group and an unfamiliar housing environment. Behavior was continuously recorded from video for 24 h, beginning at 0000 h on the day after introduction, to characterize feeding behavior, locomotor activity, and stall usage, as well as social proximity and competitive behavior surrounding the feed bunk and stall. Stocking density of the free stall barn fluctuated and was categorized as low (≤75%, 100 × animals in pen/available stalls), medium (>75%, 100%), or high (≥100%). Body weights obtained following calving indicated that previously PH heifers were heavier (632.3 vs. 593.4 kg; PH vs. IH), and body weight was included as a covariate in analysis of feeding behavior. Upon introduction to the free stall pen, previously PH heifers spent more time walking (1.9 vs. 1.3 min/h) with no effect of calf social housing on duration of lying time. However, stall use was subject to an interaction between previous housing treatment and stocking density and differed overall between previous housing treatments; previously PH heifers spent less time in the stall, particularly at high stocking density (29.4 vs. 48 min/h), due to shorter (29.6 vs. 95.7 min/visit) but marginally more frequent stall visits. Previously pair-housed heifers were also less likely to be displaced from a stall (44 vs. 85% of heifers replaced; PH vs. IH). Feeding behavior was similarly influenced by previous housing treatment particularly at high stocking density, with previously PH heifers spending more time feeding (8.2 vs. 4.2 min/h) and visiting the feed bunk more frequently (1.5 vs. 0.8 visits/h). These results suggest that preweaning social housing had long-term effects on behavior and ability to adapt to a novel environment which became most apparent under heightened competitive pressure.

OBJECTIVES: Low muscle mass (MM) is significant in cancer patients, and computed tomography (CT) is considered the reference standard for MM assessment. We investigated the consistency of CT and multifrequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (mBIA) in detecting body composition at baseline and during anticancer treatment and the relationship between MM and malnutrition as well as complications in lung and cervical cancer patients. METHODS: Abdominal CT and mBIA were conducted to assess body composition at baseline for all patients and repeated for patients with cervical cancer after 4 wk of chemoradiotherapy. Concordance was compared by intraclass correlation coefficient and Bland-Altman plots. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to assess the diagnostic efficacy of mBIA for low MM. Correlation analysis was conducted to assess the relationship between MM and Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 and Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition. Furthermore, we assessed whether there was a difference in the incidence of chemoradiotherapy side effects in the low MM group derived by CT or mBIA. RESULTS: A total of 77 cervical and 73 lung cancer patients were enrolled. mBIA showed fair discriminative capacity (area under the curve = 0.651) for detecting low MM, the concordance of skeletal MM and visceral fat area between CT and mBIA was good (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.712 and 0.698, respectively), and mBIA and CT had consistent observations of muscle and fat changes (P = 0.051 and 0.124, respectively). There was no difference in the incidence of chemoradiotherapy side effects in the low MM group compared with controls regardless of whether derived by CT or mBIA (P > 0.05). MM was correlated with Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 and Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition but showed unsatisfactory prediction of malnutrition (area under the curve <0.7). CONCLUSIONS: mBIA- and CT-derived body composition was highly correlated, and agreement was reached on body composition changes during treatment.

BACKGROUND: Fetal calf serum (FCS), an existing cell culture supplement, is effective but has several drawbacks, including being expensive, requiring a lengthy process of production, and requiring a hard currency. With this in mind, we planned to evaluate chick embryo extract and egg yolk extracts in cell culture as alternatives to fetal calf serum (FCS). METHODS: Specific pathogen-free eggs were purchased from the National Veterinary Institute, Bishoftu, Ethiopia, and incubated in a humidified incubator at 37 °C for 11 days. Egg yolk extract (EYE) and chick embryo extract (CEE) were collected after the egg was opened with caution not to destroy the yolk sack or the chick embryo itself. Chick fibroblasts and Vero cells were cultured in minimum essential medium (MEM) supplemented with egg yolk extract or chick embryo extract at ratios of 0:10, 1:9, 2.5:7.5, and 5:5% fetal calf serum. RESULTS: Fibroblast cell attachment was better in media supplemented with 5% CEE and 5% FCS. The confluency was also greater than 50% at this concentration. Vero cells cultured with 5% CEE and 5% FCS also exhibited very good cell attachment and a confluency of up to 70%. Viability and confluency were also observed at 5%:5% ratios of 50 and 70%, respectively. CONCLUSION: This investigation evaluated these two extracts as cell culture supplements and revealed promising results as alternatives to fetal calf serum. The limitation of this study is that it only used two cell types and additional cell lines, and different ratios should be tested. With the above findings, further research using different cell lines, ratios and conditions is warranted.

BACKGROUND: Cryptosporidium infection is one of the major causes of acute gastroenteritis and diarrhoea caused by a protozoan parasite affecting vertebrates and humans. The disease is prevalent in cases of immunocompromised individuals. Despite the impact of the diseases in calf and hospitalized humans, well-documented studies are not available in the study area. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of Cryptosporidium infection in calves and hospitalized humans and assess the major associated risk factors associated with Cryptosporidium infection in calves and hospitalized humans. METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted from November 2020 to March 2021 on calf and human Cryptosporidium infection in Libo Kemkem District, North West Ethiopia. A total of 193 calves and 122 human stool samples admitted to the hospital were used for this study. Three kebeles were selected purposely, and individual calves were selected using a simple random sampling method. A number of sampled calves were allocated proportionally to the selected kebeles. Human samples were collected using a systematic random sampling method. Faecal and stool samples were examined using a modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining method. RESULT: The overall prevalence of calf and human Cryptosporidium infection found in this study was 15.5% and 11.5%, respectively. Age of calf, breed, body condition, water source, faecal consistency and hygienic condition were found significantly (p < 0.05) associated with Cryptosporidium infection in the calf. Similarly, the source of potable water, immunocompromisation and contact with domestic animals were found to be significantly (p < 0.05) associated with Cryptosporidium infection in humans. CONCLUSION: There was a higher prevalence of Cryptosporidium infection in calves and humans in Libo Kemkem District. Therefore, the implementation of proper prevention methods of zoonotic Cryptosporidium infection between calf and human beings through significant risk factors is mandatory. Furthermore, additional studies to investigate the levels of economic importance of the disease should be conducted.

Mitoxantrone, an anthraquinone derivative, is a widely used anticancer drug with its well-known ability to engage in complex interactions with DNA. Although known for its intercalating ability, the enigma surrounding its binding modes with DNA persists. The existing corpus of literature primarily focuses on mitoxantrone-DNA interactions with short DNA sequences, thereby yielding insights into its interactive nature is limited to this specific sequence. This study aims to elucidate the diverse modes with which mitoxantrone interacts with calf thymus DNA using a combination of spectroscopy, calorimetry and in silico studies. The findings from spectroscopic, calorimetric and molecular dynamic results in correlation with existing literature, unveil a fascinating narrative: mitoxantrone intercalates at lower concentrations but promotes condensation at higher concentrations. Although intercalation with side chains positioned in the minor/major groove is the major binding mode in GC-rich sequences, molecular modelling studies hint at an alternative binding mode in AT-rich sequences where it exclusively displays pure electrostatic interaction. These findings underscore the pivotal role of both drug structure and base sequence in dictating binding mode and affinity. Such insights not only deepen the understanding of structure-activity relationships but also hold promise for guiding future drug design strategies.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether jacket wearing by semi-indoor Holstein calves affected performance, body measurements and health status in the preweaning period throughout the winter months. A total of one hundred calves were allocated into two treatment groups (control and jacket) in terms of their weights and sex. The calves throughout the study period were raised at individual calf hutches in a semi-open barn. All calves and the consumed concentrate intakes were weighed every 28 days to determine body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), total and daily feed consumption (TFC, DFC). Incidence rate (IR) ratios were calculated from the records of daily health assessments. Calves in treatment group were jacketed from first to 45 days of age. The weaning process started gradually at 56 days of age and the calves were weaned on day 63. No significant effects of wearing jackets in terms of body measurements and performance. The respiratory diseases IR was 1.15 times higher in calves without jackets, which means that calf health was positively affected by wearing jackets. The improved health status of the treatment group showed that wearing jackets may protect calves from adverse effects of cold stress. There is a need for more comprehensive studies about the effect of calf jackets in early periods of preweaning, especially in calves in outdoor hutches.

Background: Ultrasonography is not chosen as the common imaging modality to diagnose spinal cord diseases. The present report indicates good diagnostic efficacy of ultrasonography for identifying spinal cord compressed by subcutaneous mass when scanning through the defected vertebral laminae and spinous process. Case Description: A five-month-old female Holstein calf presented with progressive hindlimb paralysis following a surgical resection of a back mass conducted at 21 days of age. The mass was subsequently histopathologically diagnosed as a pulmonary choristoma. Alongside hindlimb paralysis, the calf developed a swollen back at the lumbar region where the mass was removed. This suggested regrowth of the resected mass, causing injury to the underlying spinal cord. Ultrasonography identified the subcutaneous involvement of the capsular mass, which had three anechoic cavities separated by the echogenic septal structures. The spinal cord could be ultrasonographically demonstrated as adjacent to the mass through the defected vertebral laminae and spinous process in the second and third lumbar vertebras. Ultrasound-guided centesis allowed the collection of purulent exudates in which Escherichia coli was isolated. Myelography and subsequent computed tomography (CT) revealed a partial blockage of the intradural flow of contrast media at the levels of the second and third lumbar vertebras, diagnosed as spina bifida on the CT images. When applying ultrasonography to the spinal cord within a saline pool soon after the subcutaneous abscess was successfully resected, the spinal cord was characterized by the interrupted and partly extended hyperechogenic line of the central canal within the echogenic parenchyma. The echotexture of the spinal cord showed damage due to compression from the subcutaneous abscess. The animal had a sub-optimal postoperative outcome, including limited improvement of the neurological signs. Conclusion: In the present case, combining ultrasonography, radiography (myelography), and CT was very effective for diagnosing spina bifida, with the subcutaneous abscess inducing spinal cord compression. Additionally, using intraoperative ultrasonographic scanning to evaluate the degree of spinal cord damage can contribute to predicting the postoperative outcome.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of limiting forage provision in pre-weaned calves on ruminal pH and short chain fatty acid (SCFA) transport capacity during the pre-weaning period. Twelve Jersey bull calves (age = 1.9 ± 0.8 d) were housed individually on sand. All calves were fed milk replacer at 1,200 g/d and texturized grain-based starter ad libitum from birth. Calves were randomly assigned one of two treatments: ad libitum forage (ALF) or limited forage provision, where forage was limited to 90 g/d as-fed (LFP). Individual feed intake was recorded daily, calf weights, and jugular blood samples were collected weekly. Once calves consumed 680 g/d of calf starter, ruminal pH was measured for seven days after which calves were humanely killed and rumen fluid sampled. During the pre-weaning period, starter intake, feed efficiency, plasma glucose and ß-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) concentration, SCFA concentration, average daily gain, and body weight were not different between treatments. Forage intake for ALF calves was greater than LFP beginning at wk 9 (255 ± 34 vs. 71 ± 40 g/d, respectively). Compared to ALF, LFP decreased mean ruminal pH (6.38 ± 0.16 vs. 5.98 ± 0.23) and duration of time where rumen pH was below 5.8 (796 ± 145 vs. 261 ± 133 min/d). Epithelial markers of SCFA transport and cell homeostasis (MCT1, NBC1, NHE3) were not affected by treatment. In conclusion, incidence of sub-acute ruminal acidosis in limited forage-fed calves did not have the same effects on intake and nutrient transporters seen in adult cows.

IMPORTANCE: Despite advancements in herd management, feeding, and pharmaceutical interventions, neonatal calf diarrhea (NCD) remains a major global health concern. Bacteria, viruses, and parasites are the major contributors to NCD. Although several pathogens have been identified in the Republic of Korea (ROK), the etiological agents of numerous NCD cases have not been identified. OBJECTIVES: To identify, for the first time, the prevalence and impact of Boosepivirus (BooV) on calf diarrhea in the ROK. METHODS: Here, the unknown cause of calf diarrhea was determined using metagenomics We then explored the prevalence of certain pathogens, including BooV, that cause NCD. Seventy diarrheal fecal samples from Hanwoo (Bos taurus coreanae) calves were analyzed using reverse transcriptase and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction for pathogen detection and BooV isolate sequencing. RESULTS: The complete genome of BooV was detected from unknown causes of calf diarrhea. And also, BooV was the most frequently detected pathogen (35.7%) among 8 pathogens in 70 diarrheic feces from Hanwoo calves. Co-infection analyses indicated that most BooV-positive samples were solely infected with BooV, indicating its significance in NCD in the ROK. All isolates were classified as BooV B in phylogenetic analysis. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: This is the first study to determine the prevalence and molecular characteristics of BooV in calf diarrhea in the ROK, highlighting the potential importance of BooV as a causative agent of calf diarrhea and highlighting the need for further research on its epidemiology and pathogenicity.

Lumpy skin disease (LSD) is one of the most economically significant viral diseases of cattle caused by the Lumpy Skin Disease Virus (LSDV), classified as a member of the genus Capripoxvirus and belongs to the family Poxviridae. Nodular skin samples were collected from clinically sick cattle in the districts of Amuru and Wara Jarso Ethiopia to isolate LSD virus. The virus was isolated using primary lamb testis and kidney cells. The isolated LSDV was infected into a healthy calf while maintaining the necessary biosecurity measures to generate skin lesions and to assess disease progression using postmortem examinations. On the fourth day after virus inoculation, the calf developed typical LSD skin nodules with increased rectal temperature, which lasted until the 12th day, when they began to decrease. Viral shedding was detected in nasal, oral, and conjunctival swabs from 6 to 14 days after infection using real-time PCR. Post-mortem tissue specimens tested positive for LSD virus using real-time PCR and virus isolation. This study showed that LSDV were responsible for the LSD outbreaks, and the appearance of typical skin nodules accompanied by fever (> 39.5 °C) defined the virus's virulent status. The experimental infection with the isolated infectious LSDV could serve as a platform for future vaccine evaluation study using an LSDV challenge model.

BACKGROUND: Calf diarrhea is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the livestock sector worldwide and it can be caused by multiple infectious agents. In Ethiopia, cattle are the most economically important species within the livestock sector, but at the same time the young animals suffer from high rates of morbidity and mortality due to calf diarrhea. However, studies including both screening and molecular characterization of bovine enteric pathogens are lacking. Therefore, we aimed to both detect and molecularly characterize four of the major enteric pathogens in calf diarrhea, Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (E. coli K99 +), Cryptosporidium spp., rotavirus A (RVA), and bovine coronavirus (BCoV) in calves from central Ethiopia. Diarrheic and non-diarrheic calves were included in the study and fecal samples were analyzed with antigen-ELISA and quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR). Positive samples were further characterized by genotyping PCRs. RESULTS: All four pathogens were detected in both diarrheic and non-diarrheic calves using qPCR and further characterization showed the presence of three Cryptosporidium species, C. andersoni, C. bovis and C. ryanae. Furthermore, genotyping of RVA-positive samples found a common bovine genotype G10P[11], as well as a more unusual G-type, G24. To our knowledge this is the first detection of the G24 RVA genotype in Ethiopia as well as in Africa. Lastly, investigation of the spike gene revealed two distinct BCoV strains, one classical BCoV strain and one bovine-like CoV strain. CONCLUSIONS: Our results show that Cryptosporidium spp., E. coli K99 + , RVA and BCoV circulate in calves from central Ethiopia. Furthermore, our findings of the rare RVA G-type G24 and a bovine-like CoV demonstrates the importance of genetic characterization.

The objective of this cross-sectional, herd-level study was to identify associations between calf management practices and herd-level preweaning mortality on Ontario dairy farms. From April to August 2022, a convenience sample of 100 dairy farms from Ontario, Canada, were visited once. A questionnaire, covering farm biosecurity, calving, colostrum management, preweaning nutrition, and housing, was verbally administered at each farm visit. Furthermore, data regarding preweaning calf mortality were retrieved from each farm's herd management software or records, including the total count of calves that survived, were culled, or died during the preweaning period for the 365 d before the farm visit. Preweaning mortality was defined as the proportion of calves that died between ≥48 h and 60 d of age divided by the total number of calves alive after 48 h of age. The herd-level preweaning mortality risk on sampled farms ranged from 0 to 15.9%, with an average of 2.8% (SD = 3.8%). A multivariable Poisson regression model was used to evaluate associations between 22 explanatory variables and preweaning mortality. Factors associated with greater herd-level preweaning mortality were larger herd size; having treatment protocols for diarrhea, pneumonia or navel infection written in collaboration with a veterinarian (compared with farms with the same treatment protocols developed without a veterinarian), and the herd-veterinarian never inquiring about calf health (compared with farms where the herd veterinarian inquired sometimes). Factors associated with lower herd-level preweaning mortality were using the calving pen for sick cows, having more than 4 people working with calves, offering calves a minimum volume of ≥9 L of milk/day, and farmers with a level of formal education higher than secondary school. These results indicate that producers may be able to reduce preweaning calf mortality by providing adequate labor for calf care, offering calves sufficient volumes of milk, being proactive in communicating with their veterinary practitioners about calf health, and potentially by engaging in continuous education.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition and sarcopenia significantly increase the risk of intra-hospital delirium, particularly among older adults. Given the potential correlation between calf circumference (CC) and these conditions, CC emerges as a promising predisposing factor for delirium. This study aims to investigate the independent association between delirium and anthropometric parameters, focusing on evaluating CC's predictive capacity for intra-hospital delirium risk. Additionally, it aims to compare CC's predictive performance with the widely used Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), while also considering potential gender disparities. METHODS: This is a retrospective study which enrolled patients aged ≥ 65 years from September 2021 to March 2022 at the Padova Hospital (Italy). Physical characteristics, intra-hospital delirium incidence, and body composition were assessed. Sarcopenia was diagnosed using the 2019 European Consensus criteria. RESULTS: Among 207 subjects, delirium affected 19% of patients. CC showed a significant association with intra-hospital delirium among the analyzed anthropometric parameters. ROC curves indicated that CC's predictive capacity for delirium onset was comparable to MNA (p = 0.98), particularly in women. In a multivariable logistic regression model, female gender and higher cognitive and CC scores emerged as protective factors against delirium onset, with each unit increase in CC associated with a 24% reduction in the odds of delirium. Conversely, sarcopenia did not significantly influence delirium onset. CONCLUSIONS: CC shows promise as a predisposing factor for intra-hospital delirium, similar to MNA, albeit with significant gender differences. CC could serve as a valuable tool for assessing delirium risk among female patients. Further validation of these findings is necessary through larger-scale studies.

Sperm whales spatially segregate by sex and social behavior as they mature. In the North Atlantic, male whales move to higher latitudes as far as Svalbard at 80° N, while females and young whales typically remain around lower latitudes below 40-45° N. The Azores, Madeira, and the Canary Islands constitute important nursery grounds for female and young sperm whales. Irish waters represent a midpoint for this species' spatial segregation in the Northeast Atlantic, where the species occurs along the submarine canyon systems to the west of the country. Historically, just male whales were thought to be found in this region between 51 and 55° N, but one adult female was caught by commercial whalers in 1910, and a 5.49 m calf was found stranded in 1916. Between 1995 and 2023, 10 female sperm whales have been stranded around the coast of Ireland. Eight of these whales have been stranded since 2013, and there has been at least one stranding per year between 2019 and 2023. Four of these strandings have occurred in Donegal in the northwest of Ireland, indicating the presence of female whales along the continental shelf off this region. Two females were stranded within a day of each other and were found in similar states of decomposition in February 2022, indicating that they may have been part of the same group rather than being lone vagrant individuals. Sperm whale calves and juveniles were also sighted in Irish waters in 2001, 2004, and 2010 in the Rockall Trough, along the Porcupine Bank and Goban Spur, where between 1 and 3 individuals were observed on four occasions while one calf live stranded in 2004. These records indicate a historical presence of female and young sperm whales in this region but that an apparent increase in occurrence has taken place over the past decade.
