With the increasing severity of arsenic (As) pollution, quantifying the environmental behavior of pollutant based on numerical model has become an important approach to determine the potential impacts and finalize the precise control strategies. Taking the industrial-intensive Jinsha River Basin as typical area, a two-dimensional hydrodynamic water quality model coupled with Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was developed to accurately simulate the watershed-scale distribution and transport of As in the terrestrial and aquatic environment at high spatial and temporal resolution. The effects of hydro-climate change, hydropower station construction and non-point source emissions on As were quantified based on the coupled model. The result indicated that higher As concentration areas mainly centralized in urban districts and concentration slowly decreased from upstream to downstream. Due to the enhanced rainfall, the As concentration was significantly higher during the rainy season than the dry season. Hydro-climate change and the construction of hydropower station not only affected the dissolved As concentration, but also affected the adsorption and desorption of As in sediment. Furthermore, As concentration increased with the input of non-point source pollution, with the maximum increase about 30%, resulting that non-point sources contributed important pollutant impacts to waterways. The coupled model used in pollutant behavior analysis is general with high potential application to predict and mitigate water pollution.

Abstract Introduction: Leptodactylus latinasus and Physalaemus cuqui are sympatric anuran species with similar environmental requirements and contrasting reproductive modes. Climatic configuration determines distribution patterns and promotes sympatry of environmental niches, but specificity/selectivity determines the success of reproductive modes. Species distribution models (SDM) are a valuable tool to predict spatio-temporal distributions based on the extrapolation of environmental predictors. Objectives: To determine the spatio-temporal distribution of environmental niches and assess whether the protected areas of the World Database of Protected Areas (WDPA) allow the conservation of these species in the current scenario and future. Methods: We applied different algorithms to predict the distribution and spatio-temporal overlap of environmental niches of L. latinasus and P. cuqui within South America in the last glacial maximum (LGM), middle-Holocene, current and future scenarios. We assess the conservation status of both species with the WDPA conservation units. Results: All applied algorithms showed high performance for both species (TSS = 0.87, AUC = 0.95). The L. latinasus predictions showed wide environmental niches from LGM to the current scenario (49 % stable niches, 37 % gained niches, and 13 % lost niches), suggesting historical fidelity to stable climatic-environmental regions. In the current-future transition, L. latinasus would increase the number of stable (70 %) and lost (20 %) niches, suggesting fidelity to lowland regions and a possible trend toward microendemism. P. cuqui loses environmental niches from the LGM to the current scenario (25 %) and in the current-future transition (63 %), increasing the environmental sympathy between both species; 31 % spatial overlap in the current scenario and 70 % in the future. Conclusion: Extreme drought events and rainfall variations, derived from climate change, suggest the loss of environmental niches for these species that are not currently threatened but are not adequately protected by conservation units. The loss of environmental niches increases spatial sympatry which represents a new challenge for anurans and the conservation of their populations.


Resumen Introducción: Leptodactylus latinasus y Physalaemus cuqui son especies de anuros simpátricos con requerimientos ambientales similares y modos reproductivos contrastantes. La configuración climática determina los patrones de distribución y promueve la simpatría de los nichos ambientales, pero la especificidad/selectividad determina el éxito de los modos reproductivos. Los modelos de distribución de especies (MDE) son una herramienta valiosa para predecir distribuciones espacio-temporales basadas en la extrapolación de predictores ambientales. Objetivos: Determinar la distribución espacio-temporal de los nichos ambientales y evaluar si las áreas protegidas de la base de Datos Mundial de Áreas Protegidas (DMAP) permiten la conservación de estas especies en el escenario actual y futuro. Métodos: Aplicamos diferentes algoritmos para predecir la distribución y superposición espacio-temporal de nichos ambientales de L. latinasus y P. cuqui dentro de América del Sur en el último máximo glacial (UGM), Holoceno medio, actual y futuro. Evaluamos el estado de conservación de ambas especies con las unidades de conservación de la DMAP. Resultados: Todos los algoritmos aplicados mostraron un alto rendimiento para ambas especies (TSS = 0.87, AUC = 0.95). Las predicciones de L. latinasus mostraron amplios nichos ambientales desde LGM hasta el escenario actual (49 % de nichos estables, 37 % de nichos ganados y 13 % de nichos perdidos), sugiriendo fidelidad histórica por regiones climático-ambientales estables. En la transición actual-futura L. latinasus incrementaría la cantidad de nichos estables (70 %) y perdidos (20 %), sugiriendo fidelidad por regiones de tierras bajas y la posible tendencia hacia el microendemismo. P. cuqui pierde nichos ambientales desde el LGM al escenario actual (25 %) y en la transición actual-futura (63 %), incrementando la simpatría ambiental entre ambas especies; 31 % de superposición espacial en el escenario actual y 70 % en el futuro. Conclusión: Los eventos de sequía extrema y las variaciones de precipitaciones, derivados del cambio climático, sugieren la pérdida de nichos ambientales para estas especies, actualmente no se encuentran amenazadas, pero no están adecuadamente protegidas por las unidades de conservación. La pérdida de nichos ambientales aumenta la simpatría espacial que representa un nuevo desafío para estos anuros y la conservación de sus poblaciones.

Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) is a common side effect of antibiotic therapy, characterized by intestinal inflammation which reduces the quality of life of patients. Xianglian Pill (XLP) has long been used to treat abdominal pain, diarrhea, bacillary dysentery and enteritis. Studies found that XLP has curative effect on AAD; however, the chemical constituents and mechanism of XLP have not been fully elucidated because of the lack of in vitro and in vivo studies. In this study, ultra-high performance liquid chromatography mass spectrometry method (UPLC-Q-Exactive-Orbitrap-HRMS) was used to examine the components of the XLP. Then, the binding between active compounds and the key targets was studied using network pharmacology and molecular docking. A comparative tissue distribution study was established for the simultaneous determination of the 10 active components in healthy and AAD mouse models. Forty-six components were characterized from XLP. According to the network pharmacology degree value, a prediction was made that encompassed 42 components and 14 core targets, which were intricately involved in crucial biological pathways, such as the AGE-RAGE signaling, cellular senescence, and MAPK signaling. Tissue distribution analysis showed that the 10 components were widely distributed in the heart, liver, spleen, lungs, kidneys, small intestine, and large intestine of mice, with varying concentrations in healthy and AAD mice. Molecular docking analysis also indicated that the active compounds in the tissue distribution could bind tightly to key targets of network pharmacological studies. This study provides a reference for further investigations of the relationships between the chemical components and pharmacological activities of XLP.

Widely-used C60 fullerene nanoparticles (C60) result in their release into the aquatic environment, which may affect the distribution and toxicity of pollutants such as arsenic (As), to aquatic organism. In this study, arsenate (As(V)) accumulation, speciation and subcellular distribution was determined in Danio rerio (zebrafish) intestine, head and muscle tissues in the presence of C60. Meanwhile we compared how single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), graphene oxide (GO) and graphene (GN) nanoparticles alter the behaviors of As(V). Results showed that C60 significantly inhibited As accumulation and toxicity in D. rerio, due to a decrease in total As and monomethylarsonic acid (MMA) and As(V) species concentrations, a lower relative distribution in the metal-sensitive fraction (MSF). It was attributed that C60 may coat As(V) ion channels and consequently, affect the secretion of digestive enzymes in the gut, favoring As excretion and inhibiting As methylation. Similarly, MWCNTs reduced the species concentration of MMA and As(V) in the intestines, low GSH (glutathione) contents in the intestine. Due to the disparity of other carbon-based nanomaterial morphologies, SWCNTs, GO and GN exhibited the various effects on the toxicity of As(V). In addition, the possible pathway of arsenobetaine (AsB) biosynthesis included migration from the intestine to muscle in D. rerio, with the precursor of AsB likely to be 2-dimethylarsinylacetic acid (DMAA). The results of this study suggest that C60 is beneficial for controlling As(V) pollution and reducing the impact of As(V) biogeochemical cycles throughout the ecosystem.

BACKGROUND: Endemism is essential in biodiversity, biogeography, and conservation tasks. Based on herbarium specimens kept in some local herbaria, many published literature, and available information, we compiled a comprehensive list and an updated assessment of the Egyptian endemic and near-endemic taxa. The application of quantitative approaches to the distribution patterns, conservation status, and habitat preference of endemic taxa in Egypt was provided. Comparisons of the near-endemic taxa with other neighbouring flora were explained. For each taxon, the distribution patterns, most preferable habitat, biological spectrum, and taxa among 14 phytogeographical regions (Operational Geographical Units; OGUs) of Egypt were determined. RESULTS: In this study, 19 endemics (out of 70) and 76 near-endemics (out of 181) are newly added taxa. Differentiation indices represented the taxonomic degrees of differentiation among endemic taxa. Two different indices were used to assess endemism: single-region endemic taxa (SRET) and multiple-region endemic taxa (MRET). Most endemic and near-endemic taxa were recorded from the mountainous Sinai (S) and the Mareotis sector of the Mediterranean coastal land (Mm). Generally, the most represented families in endemic and near-endemic areas were Asteraceae, Caryophyllaceae, Lamiaceae, and Fabaceae. More than 60% of the endemic taxa occurred in the sandy plains, wadis (desert valleys), and rocky plains and mountains. Applying hierarchical cluster analysis to the occurrences of 70 endemic taxa in the 14 studied OGUs revealed five main floristic groups (I-V), each characterized by certain OGUs. We provided eight groups of near-endemic taxa that represented their extension in neighbouring countries. CONCLUSIONS: The presented data will help to fill the gap in our knowledge of endemism, provide baseline information to understand biogeographical processes and facilitate further cooperation toward conservation purposes.

In traditional hydraulic robotics, actuators must be sized for the highest possible load, resulting in significant energy losses when operating in lower force regimes. Variable recruitment fluidic artificial muscle (FAM) bundles offer a novel bio-inspired solution to this problem. Divided into individual MUs, each with its own control valve, a variable recruitment FAM bundle uses a switching control scheme to selectively bring MUs online according to load demand. To date, every dynamic variable recruitment study in the literature has considered homogeneous bundles containing MUs of equal size. However, natural mammalian muscle MUs are heterogeneous and primarily operate based on Henneman's size principle, which states that MUs are recruited from smallest to largest. Is it better for a FAM variable recruitment bundle to operate according to this principle, or are there other recruitment orders that result in better performance? What are the appropriate criteria for switching between recruitment states for these different recruitment orders? This chapter seeks to answer these questions by performing two case studies exploring different bundle MU size distributions, analyzing the tradeoffs between tracking performance and energetics, and determining how these tradeoffs are affected by different MU recruitment order and recruitment state transition thresholds. The only difference between the two test cases is the overall force capacity (i.e., total size) of the bundle. For each test case, a Pareto frontier for different MU size distributions, recruitment orders, and recruitment state transition thresholds is constructed. The results show that there is a complex relationship between overall bundle size, MU size distributions, recruitment orders, and recruitment state transition thresholds corresponding to the best tradeoffs change along the Pareto frontier. Overall, these two case studies validate the use of Henneman's Size Principle as a variable recruitment strategy, but also demonstrate that it should not be the only method considered.

Data are presented demonstrating that absorbance detection can be used during high-speed sedimentation velocity analytical ultracentrifugation (hs-SV-AUC) experiments characterize the size distribution of adeno-associated virus (AAV) drug products accurately. Advantages and limitations of being able to use this detector in this specific type of SV-AUC experiment are discussed.

BACKGROUND: Trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) is linked with obesity, while limited evidence on its relationship with body fat distribution. Herein, we investigated the associations between serum TMAO and longitudinal change of fat distribution in this prospective cohort study. METHODS: Data of 1964 participants (40-75y old) from Guangzhou Nutrition and Health Study (GNHS) during 2008-2014 was analyzed. Serum TMAO concentration was quantified by HPLC-MS/MS at baseline. The body composition was assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at each 3-y follow-up. Fat distribution parameters were fat-to-lean mass ratio (FLR) and trunk-to-leg fat ratio (TLR). Fat distribution changes were derived from the coefficient of linear regression between their parameters and follow-up duration. RESULTS: After an average of 6.2-y follow-up, analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) and linear regression displayed women with higher serum TMAO level had greater increments in trunk FLR (mean ± SD: 1.47 ± 4.39, P-trend = 0.006) and TLR (mean ± SD: 0.06 ± 0.24, P-trend = 0.011). Meanwhile, for women in the highest TMAO tertile, linear mixed-effects model (LMEM) analysis demonstrated the annual estimated increments (95% CI) were 0.03 (95% CI: 0.003 - 0.06, P = 0.032) in trunk FLR and 1.28 (95% CI: -0.17 - 2.73, P = 0.083) in TLR, respectively. In men, there were no similar significant observations. Sensitivity analysis yielded consistent results. CONCLUSION: Serum TMAO displayed a more profound correlation with increment of FLR and TLR in middle-aged and older community-dwelling women in current study. More and further studies are still warranted in the future. TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT03179657.

The influence of different preparation methods on the physicochemical properties of amorphous solid forms have gained considerable attention, especially with recent publications on pharmaceutical polyamorphism. In the present study, we have investigated the possible occurrence of polyamorphism in the drug celecoxib (CEL) by investigating the thermal behavior, morphology, structure, molecular mobility and physical stability of amorphous CEL obtained by quench-cooling (QC), ball milling (BM) and spray drying (SD). Similar glass transition temperatures but different recrystallization behaviors were observed for CEL-QC, CEL-BM and CEL-SD using modulated differential scanning calorimetry analysis. A correlation between the different recrystallization behaviors of the three CEL amorphous forms and the respective distinct powder morphologies, was also found. Molecular dynamics simulations however, reveal that CEL presents similar molecular conformational distributions when subjected to QC and SD. Moreover, the obtained molecular conformational distributions of CEL are different from the ones found in its crystal structure and also from the ones found in the lowest-energy structure obtained by quantum mechanical calculations. The type and strength of CEL hydrogen bond interactions found in CEL-QC and CEL-SD systems are almost identical, though different from the ones presented in the crystal structure. Pair distribution function analyses and isothermal microcalorimetry show similar local structures and structural relaxation times, respectively, for CEL-QC, CEL-BM and CEL-SD. The present work shows that not only similar physicochemical properties (glass transition temperature, and structural relaxation time), but also similar molecular conformational distributions were observed for all prepared CEL amorphous systems. Hence, despite their different recrystallization behaviors, the three amorphous forms of CEL did not show any signs of polyamorphism.

A vertical header is a crucial component of a microchannel heat exchanger that facilitates the distribution of the two phases of the refrigerant into horizontally aligned channels. Ensuring an even distribution of the refrigerant into the channels is imperative for achieving the designed optimal performance. Previous studies have indicated that the distribution characteristics of the vertical header are contingent upon the mass flow rate and geometric properties of the header. This study aims to investigate the distribution characteristics of two-phase flow resulting from structural modifications in the header, specifically by implementing a vertical header with a helical structure. Hence, an experimental device simulating a microchannel heat exchanger found in a commercial air conditioning system was employed. The distribution characteristics of the vertically oriented header with a helical structure were measured by varying the inlet conditions (mass flow rate: 50-100 kg h-1; vapor quality: 0.1-0.2). The measured distribution characteristics were compared with those obtained from a conventional straight vertical header possessing the same cross-sectional properties. The experimental findings demonstrated that the helical structure induced a distinctive flow pattern and facilitated the mixing of the two phases. Furthermore, this helical structure exhibited reduced inertial forces compared to the simple vertical header, leading to improved distribution performance.

High spatiotemporal resolution data on near-surface ozone concentration distribution is of great significance for monitoring and controlling atmospheric ozone pollution and improving the living environment. Using TROPOMI-L3 NO2, HCHO products, and ERA5-land high-resolution data as estimation variables, an XGBoost-LME model was constructed to estimate the near-surface ozone concentration in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region. The results showed that: ① Through correlation analysis, surface 2 m temperature (T2M), 2 m dewpoint temperature (D2M), surface solar radiation downwards (SSRD), tropospheric formaldehyde (HCHO), and tropospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were important factors affecting the near-surface ozone concentration in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region. Among them, T2M, SSRD, and D2M had strong correlations, with correlation coefficients of 0.82, 0.75, and 0.71, respectively. ② Compared with that of other models, the XGBoost-LME model had the best performance in terms of various indicators. The ten-fold cross-validation evaluation indicators R2, MAE, and RMSE were 0.951, 9.27 µg·m-3, and 13.49 µg·m-3, respectively. At the same time, the model performed well at different time scales. ③ In terms of time, there was a significant seasonal difference in near-surface ozone concentration in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region in 2019, with the concentration changing in the order of summer > spring > autumn > winter. The monthly average ozone concentration in the region showed an inverted "V" trend, with a slight increase in September. The highest value occurred in July, whereas the lowest value occurred in December. In terms of spatial distribution, the near-surface ozone concentrations in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region during the months of February and March were generally at the same levels. In January, November, and December, there was a relatively insignificant trend of higher concentrations in the north and lower concentrations in the south. For the remaining months, the spatial distribution of near-surface ozone concentrations in this area predominantly exhibited a pattern of higher concentrations in the south and lower concentrations in the north. High-value areas were predominantly found in the plain regions of the southern part with lower altitudes, dense population, and higher industrial emissions; low-value areas, on the other hand, were primarily located in mountainous areas of the northern part with higher altitudes, sparse population, higher vegetation coverage, and lower industrial emissions.

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in the marine environment and have become an emerging pollutant that is attracting great attention. To reveal the pollution characteristics of MPs in surface seawater of coastal waters in Guangdong Province, nine bays (estuaries) were selected from Jiangmen to Shantou. The distribution and compositional characteristics of MPs were investigated through field sampling, oxidation digestion, and visual and compositional identification, and their potential sources were analyzed. The ecological risks were assessed by combining the pollution load index and the polymer risk index. The results showed that MPs were detected in all 30 surface seawater samples from the coastal waters of Guangdong Province, with an abundance range of 70-920 n·m-3 and an average abundance of (295.3 ±175.3) n·m-3. The highest MPs abundance was found in the Pearl River estuary, and the lowest abundance was found in Shenquan bay. The distribution patterns were mainly influenced by human activities and ocean currents. The dominant polymer types included polypropylene (31.2%), phenol resin (16.0%), polyethylene terephthalate (15.3%), and polyethylene (10.9%). The main shape, color, and size categories of MPs were fiber (57.5%), transparent (72.0%), and 0.5-1 mm (32.8%), respectively. The possible sources of MPs mainly included aquaculture, fishing, navigation, tourism, municipal sewage discharge, and ocean current transportation. The model assessment results showed that the pollution load risk of MPs was relatively low, but the polymer risk was at a medium-high level. This study provides a data basis for the action plan of plastic pollution control in Guangdong Province and supports the prevention and control of marine MPs pollution.

Organophosphates (OPEs) are widely used as flame retardants and additives and thus are commonly detected in the environment. In order to explore their environmental behavior, the concentrations of 13 OPEs in the surface water and sediment of Dongting Lake were analyzed using UPLC-MS/MS. The results showed that 11 OPEs were detected, with detection frequencies of 5.26%-100% and 58.3%-100%, and the concentrations of OPEs were 2.06-2 028 ng·L-1 and 19.6-2 232 ng·g-1 in water and sediment, respectively. Overall, contamination concentrations were ranked in descending order as follows: inflowing rivers, lake area, and outlet, whereas the spatial distribution of concentrations in sediment was inversely proportional to hydrodynamics. The concentration of OPEs in Dongting Lake was at a high level compared with that of domestic and foreign lakes. Among the detected 11 OPEs, tri-iso-butyl phosphate (TnBP) and (TiBP) were dominant in water, accounting for 52.3% and 22.4% of ∑OPEs, respectively. TPhP was the dominant OPEs in sediment, accounting for 31.2% of ∑OPEs. The correlation and principal component analysis indicated that OPEs pollution in Dongting Lake was mainly affected by industrial production emissions, fishery aquaculture, and atmospheric deposition. The assessment results of the risk entropy showed that most of the detected OPEs in water had relatively low ecological risks, whereas the ecological risk of 2-ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP) at some sampling points requires further attention.

In order to remedy the lack of research on the effect of "Grain for Green" on soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) distribution on slope soil in purple hilly areas of Sichuan Basin, China, a study was conducted on a long-term observation site established in the Wanan small watershed of Yanting Agro-ecological Experimental Station of Purple Soil, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The morphology, content, and storage of C and N in soil at different slope positions of farmland and the artificial forests in rehabilitated land with a history of approximately 30 years were compared. Our results showed that "Grain for Green" significantly increased soil organic carbon (SOC) content and SOC stock in all soil layers. The SOC stock of the surface layer (0-20 cm) increased by 25.86 t·hm-2, and the annual SOC stocks ratio was 0.89 t·hm-2. Soil total nitrogen (TN) content increased slightly but only in the 0-20 cm soil layer. Compared with those in sloping farmland, the differences in available C and N nutrients such as soil nitrate N (NO3--N), ammonia N (NH4+-N), and dissolved organic C (DOC) in the whole soil profile (0-70 cm) were basically not significant (P > 0.05). In addition, our research also found that slope position had significant effects on the contents of TN, SOC, NO3--N, NH4+-N, and DOC in farmland soil (P< 0.05). The variation trend of soil NO3--N, NH4+-N, and DOC contents along the slope was as follows: upper slope < middle slope < lower slope, whereas the soil TN and SOC contents were highest in the lower slope, followed by the upper slope and middle slope. The position of the slope had a significant impact only on DOC content in forest soil, which increased along the slope. This research indicated that when evaluating the impact of land use changes on soil C and N stocks in the purple soil hilly region, the influence of topographic factors cannot be ignored.

BACKGROUND: Systemic inflammation impairs outcomes in acute ischemic stroke (AIS). There is limited knowledge regarding the prognostic value of inflammatory biomarkers derived from complete blood count in predicting in-hospital mortality (IHM) in AIS patients treated with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (rt-PA). Our study aims to compare the predictive performance of various inflammatory biomarkers for predicting IHM in AIS patients. METHODS: This retrospective study included AIS patients treated with rt-PA between January 2015 and July 2022. We identified the following inflammatory biomarkers: white blood cell counts (WBCs), absolute neutrophil count, absolute lymphocyte count, neutrophil to lymphocyte count ratio, platelet to neutrophil ratio, platelet to lymphocyte ratio, red cell distribution width (RDW), RDW to platelet ratio (RPR), and hemoglobin to RDW (HB/RDW) at admission before rt-PA administration. We assessed the predictive value of these biomarkers for IHM by plotting receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. The associations between inflammatory biomarkers and IHM were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression (MVLR) analyses. RESULTS: Of 345 AIS patients, IHM occurred in 65 patients (18.84%). HB/RDW and RDW showed better predictive performance compared to other inflammatory biomarkers. In ROC curve analysis, HB/RDW and RDW had an area under ROC of 0.668. HB/RDW outperformed RDW in terms of the positive likelihood ratio (2.733 vs 1.575), accuracy (0.757 vs 0.585), specificity (0.814 vs 0.560), and positive predictive values (0.388 vs 0.267). In MVLR analysis, RDW, RPR, and HB/RDW remained significantly associated with IHM (per 1-unit increases: odds ratios (ORs) = 1.450, 95% CI: [1.178-1.784]; per 1-unit increases: ORs = 1.329, 95% CI [1.103-1.602]; and per 0.1-unit decreases: ORs = 1.412, 95% CI [1.089-1.831], respectively). CONCLUSIONS: The association between HB/RDW and IHM in AIS patients treated with rt-PA was significant. HB/RDW exhibited superior predictive performance compared to other inflammatory biomarkers in predicting IHM.

A new species of holothuroid, Pseudothyonelabradorensis sp. nov. (order Dendrochirotida and family Sclerodactylidae), was discovered off the coast of Labrador (eastern Canada) at a depth of 740-969 m. Two specimens were described based on morphological and genetic parameters. Distinctive characters included pinkish body colour, presence of tube feet on a 'tail', supporting rod-shaped ossicles in the tube feet, and rod-shaped ossicles in the tentacles. To investigate its phylogenetic relationships, partial sequences of COI were obtained for the new species as well as for the type species P.raphanus and another North Atlantic species P.serrifera. According to the phylogenetic analysis, P.labradorensis sp. nov. appeared in a well-supported clade with P.raphanus and P.serrifera. Molecular data also suggest polyphyly of the genus, showing the Northeast Pacific species Pseudothyonebelli recovered outside of the clade containing the type species. Pseudothyonelabradorensis sp. nov. is the first species of the genus from the Northwest Atlantic. A key to the North Atlantic Pseudothyone is provided.

Background: The Asian Cat Snake genus Boiga Fitzinger, 1826 includes 37 species, with high species diversity. Five species of Boiga have been recorded in China including B.multomaculata (Boie, 1827), B.kraepelini (Stejneger, 1902), B.cyanea (Duméril, Bibron & Duméril, 1854), B.guangxiensis (Wen, 1998) and B.siamensis (Nutaphand, 1971). Previously, the validity of the species Boigastoliczkae (Wall, 1909) was controversial. B.stoliczkae was considered in synonymy with B.ochracea. Currently, the taxonomy of B.multomaculata and B.ochracea (Theobald, 1868) was revised so that B.multomaculata and B.ochracea actually represent a single species and B.stoliczkae was recognised as a valid species. B.stoliczkae was previously known to be found in the west from central Nepal through Darjeeling, Sikkim and Bhutan to Arunachal Pradesh and Assam in north-eastern India. New information: One adult female specimen of the Asian Cat Snake was collected from Gyirong County, near the China-Nepal border, Tibet, China during fieldwork on August 2023. We compared morphology and mitochondrial DNA sequence data with all the species of the genus Boiga. Both datasets strongly supported referring the Chinese specimens to B.stoliczkae (Wall, 1909) due to the 21 mid-dorsal scale rows and the uncorrected p-distance (mitochondrial DNA gene cytochrome b) between this specimen and B.stoliczkae which is 1.7%. We further described morphological characters of the Chinese specimen in detail and compared these with the specimens that had been previously described. The dorsal ground colour of the Chinese specimen is dark brown, with a black stripe distributed almost evenly across the tail. This is a novel morph of the species B.stoliczkae. The newly-collected Chinese specimen expands the distribution of the species on the Himalaya range.

This letter addresses the study titled "Red cell distribution width: A predictor of the severity of hypertriglyceridemia-induced acute pancreatitis" by Lv et al published in the World Journal of Experimental Medicine. The study offers a valuable analysis of red cell distribution width (RDW) as a predictive marker for persistent organ failure in patients with hypertriglyceridemia-induced acute pancreatitis. The study results suggest that RDW, combined with the Bedside Index for Severity in Acute Pancreatitis score, could enhance the predictive accuracy for severe outcomes. Further investigation into the role of RDW in different severities of acute pancreatitis is recommended. Additionally, the need for large-scale and multicenter prospective studies to validate these findings is emphasized.

Herbivore-avoided plant patches are one of the initial characteristics of natural grassland degradation. These vegetation patches can intensify the spatial heterogeneity of soil nutrients within these grasslands. However, the effects of non-edible plant patches patches on the spatial heterogeneity of microorganisms have not been sufficiently studied in alpine meadows of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, especially patches formed by herbaceous plants. To answer this question, soil nutrients, plant assembly, and microbial communities were measured inside, around, and outside of Artemisia smithii patches. These were 0 m (within the patch), 0-1 m (one meter from the edge of the patch), 1-2 m (two meters from the edge of the patch), 2-3 m (three meters from the edge of the patch), and >30 m (non-patch grassland more than thirty meters from the edge of the patch). Our results showed that A. smithii patches accumulated more aboveground biomass (AGB) within the patches (0 m), and formed fertile islands with the soil around the patches. Additionally, A. smithii patches increased soil bacterial diversity within (0 m) and around (0-1 m) the patches by primarily enriching copiotrophic bacteria (Actinobacteria), while the diversity of fungal communities increased mainly in the 0-1 m area but not within the patches. Bacterial community diversity was driven by pH, urease, nitrate nitrogen (NO3 --N), and microbial biomass carbon (MBC). The contents of soil water (SWC), soil organic matter (SOM), urease, NO3 --N, and MBC were the main factors influencing the diversity of the fungal community. This study elucidates the vegetation, nutrients, and microbial heterogeneity and their interrelationships, which are observed in fertile islands of herbivore-avoided plant patches in alpine meadows, and provides further insights into the spatial pattern of nutrients in patchy degraded grasslands.

Haemaphysalis longicornis (Neumann) was first established in New Jersey and has rapidly spread across most of the eastern United States. This tick has the potential to infest a wide variety of hosts and can reproduce quickly via parthenogenesis, presenting a new threat to animal health. Here we report the first record of a single H. longicornis tick in Mecklenburg County, Virginia, from incidental field collections of ticks. In addition to H. longicornis, we collected 787 Amblyomma americanum, 25 Dermacentor variabilis, 6 Ixodes affinis, 1 Haemaphysalis leporispalustris, and 1 Amblyomma maculatum using standard dragging and flagging techniques. The expansion of H. longicornis will have economic consequences for livestock producers in south-central Virginia, who must now manage this species. Enhanced surveillance is needed to fully understand its growing geographic distribution in the United States and the subsequent consequences of its spread.
