BACKGROUND: In the continuous endeavor to find safe and efficient treatments for Atopic Dermatitis (AD), there remains a considerable focus on dietary adjustments. Nevertheless, the limited availability of research and conflicting findings in the academic literature pose a hurdle in establishing conclusive recommendations. METHOD: Mendelian randomization (MR) was applied to the most comprehensive genome-wide association studies (GWAS) data on tea intake (447 485), green tea intake (n = 64 949), flavored milk intake (n = 64 941), never eat eggs, dairy, wheat, sugar: Wheat products(n = 461 046), never eat eggs, dairy, wheat, sugar: Sugar or foods/drinks containing sugar (n = 461 046), never eat eggs, dairy, wheat, sugar: I eat all of the above (n = 461 046) and atopic dermatitis (n = 218 467). We used the inverse-variance weighted method (IVW) as the primary method. RESULTS: The IVW analyses have demonstrated an increased tea intake was genetically associated with a reduced risk of AD (odds ratio [OR]: 0.646, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.430-0.968, p = 0.034). Furthermore, green tea intake was significantly negatively associated with AD (IVW OR: 0.986, 95% CI: 0.975-0.998; p = 0.024) in the IVW model. AD risk could be reduced by never eating wheat products (IVW OR: 8.243E-04, 95% CI: 7.223E-06-9.408E-02, p = 0.003). There was no association between never eating eggs, dairy, wheat, sugar: Sugar, or foods/drinks containing sugar, I eat all of the above and AD. CONCLUSIONS: Our MR study suggests a causal relationship between tea intake, green tea intake, and the avoidance of eating wheat products with atopic dermatitis. Our findings recommend that preventing and managing atopic dermatitis may be achieved by never eating wheat products while increasing tea and green tea intake.

BACKGROUND: The influence of adherence to a planetary health diet (PHD) proposed by the EAT-Lancet Commission on cardiovascular disease (CVD) is inconclusive. Besides, whether genetic susceptibility to CVD can modify the association of PHD with CVD remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the association between adherence to PHD and CVD, and to evaluate the interaction between PHD and genetic predisposition to CVD. METHODS: This study included 114,165 participants who completed at least two 24-h dietary recalls and were initially free of CVD from the UK Biobank. PHD score was calculated to assess adherence to PHD. Genetic risk was evaluated using the polygenic risk score. Incidence of total CVD, ischemic heart disease (IHD), atrial fibrillation (AF), heart failure (HF), and stroke were identified via electronic health records. Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 9.9 y, 10,071 (8.8%) incident CVD cases were documented. Compared with participants with the lowest adherence to PHD, HRs (95% CIs) for total CVD, IHD, AF, HF, and stroke among those with the highest adherence were 0.79 (0.74, 0.84), 0.73 (0.67, 0.79), 0.90 (0.82, 0.99), 0.69 (0.59, 0.82), and 0.88 (0.75, 1.04), respectively. No significant interaction between the genetic risk of CVD and PHD was observed. Participants with high genetic risk and low PHD score, as compared with those with low genetic risk and high PHD score, had a 48% (95% CI: 40%, 56%) higher risk of CVD. The population-attributable risk (95% CI) of CVD for poor adherence to PHD ranged from 8.79% (5.36%, 12.51%) to 14.00% (9.00%, 18.88%). CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that higher adherence to PHD was associated with lower risk of total CVD, IHD, AF, and HF in populations across all genetic risk categories.

BACKGROUND: While healthy and sustainable diets benefit human and planetary health, their monetary cost has a direct impact on consumer food choices. This study aimed to identify the cost and environmental impact of the current Brazilian diet (CBD) and compare it with healthy and sustainable diets. METHODS: Data from the Brazilian Household Budget Survey 2017/18 and the Footprints of Foods and Culinary Preparations Consumed in Brazil database were used for a modeling study comparing the cost of healthy and sustainable diets (based on the Brazilian Dietary Guidelines (BDG) diet and the EAT-Lancet diet) versus the CBD. The DIETCOST program generated multiple food baskets for each scenario (Montecarlo simulations). Nutritional quality, cost, and environmental impact measures (carbon footprint (CF) and water footprint (WF)) were estimated for all diets and compared by ANOVA. Simple linear regressions used standardized environmental impacts measures to estimate differentials in costs and environmental impacts among diets scenarios. RESULTS: We observed significant differences in costs/1000 kcal. The BDG diet was cheaper (BRL$4.9 (95%IC:4.8;4.9) ≈ USD$1.5) than the CBD (BRL$5.6 (95%IC:5.6;5.7) ≈ USD$1.8) and the EAT-Lancet diet (BRL$6.1 (95%IC:6.0;6.1) ≈ USD$1.9). Ultra-processed foods (UPF) and red meat contributed the most to the CBD cost/1000 kcal, while fruits and vegetables made the lowest contribution to CBD. Red meat, sugary drinks, and UPF were the main contributors to the environmental impacts of the CBD. The environmental impact/1000 kcal of the CBD was nearly double (CF:3.1 kg(95%IC: 3.0;3.1); WF:2,705 L 95%IC:2,671;2,739)) the cost of the BDG diet (CF:1.4 kg (95%IC:1.4;1.4); WF:1,542 L (95%IC:1,524;1,561)) and EAT-Lancet diet (CF:1.1 kg (95%IC:1.0;1.1); WF:1,448 L (95%IC:1,428;1,469)). A one standard deviation increase in standardized CF corresponded to an increase of BRL$0.48 in the cost of the CBD, similar to standardized WF (BRL$0.56). A similar relationship between the environmental impact and the cost of the BDG (CF: BRL$0.20; WF: BRL$0.33) and EAT-Lancet (CF: BRL$0.04; WF: BRL$0.18) was found, but with a less pronounced effect. CONCLUSIONS: The BDG diet was cost-effective, while the EAT-Lancet diet was slightly pricier than the CBD. The CBD presented almost double the CF and WF compared to the BDG and EAT-Lancet diets. The lower cost in each diet was associated with lower environmental impact, particularly for the BDG and EAT-Lancet diets. Multisectoral public policies must be applied to guide individuals and societies towards healthier and more sustainable eating patterns.

BACKGROUND: Sustainable diets contribute to improving human health and reducing food-related greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE). Here, we established the effects of a facility-based sustainable diet intervention on the adherence to the EAT-Lancet Planetary Health Diet and GHGE of consumers. METHODS: In this quasi-experiment, vegan menus and educational material on sustainable diets were provided in the largest cafeteria of a German hospital for 3 months. Regular customers (> 1/week) in this cafeteria (intervention group) and in all other hospital cafeterias (control group) completed a questionnaire about their sociodemographic and dietary characteristics before and after the intervention period. We calculated difference-in-differences (DID), their 95% confidence intervals (CIs), and p-values for the adherence to the EAT-Lancet Planetary Health Diet Index (PHDI; 0-42 score points) and food-related GHGE. The protocol was registered at the German Clinical Trial Register (reference: DRKS00032620). FINDINGS: In this study population (N = 190; age range: 18-79 years; women: 67%; highest level of formal education: 63%), the mean baseline PHDI (25·1 ± 4·8 vs. 24·7 ± 5·8 points) and the mean baseline GHGE (3·3 ± 0·8 vs. 3·3 ± 0·7 kg CO2-eq./d) were similar between the intervention (n = 92) and the control group (n = 98). The PHDI increase was 0·6 points (95% CI: -0·4, + 1·6) higher in the intervention group than in the control group. This trend was stronger among frequent consumers of the vegan menu than among rare and never consumers. No between-group difference was seen for GHGE changes (DID: 0·0; 95% CI: -0·2, + 0·1 kg CO2-eq./d). INTERPRETATION: Pending verification in a longer-term project and a larger sample, this quasi-experiment in a big hospital in Germany suggests that offering vegan menus and information material in the cafeteria enhances the adherence to healthy and environmentally friendly diets among regular customers. These findings argue for making sustainable food choices the default option and for improving nutrition literacy. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to explore the relationship between the EAT-Lancet diet (ELD) and head and neck cancers (HNCs) in 101,755 Americans enrolled in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian (PLCO) Cancer Screening Trial. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. METHODS: ELD score was calculated to assess participant's adherence to ELD. Cox hazard regression models were utilised to evaluate the association of ELD and dietary components with HNC risk. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) plots were employed to explore the linearity of the relationships. Predefined subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses were performed to identify potential effect modifiers and to assess the stability of the findings, respectively. RESULTS: After a mean follow-up of 8.84 years, 279 cases of HNCs, including 169 cases of oral cavity and pharyngeal cancers and 110 cases of laryngeal cancer were recorded. This study observed a dose-response negative correlation between ELD and HNCs (hazard ratio [HR]Q4 vs Q1: 0.52; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.34, 0.80; P-trend = 0.003; HRper SD increment: 0.80; 95% CI: 0.71, 0.91), and oral cavity and pharyngeal cancers (HRQ4 vs Q1: 0.52; 95% CI: 0.31, 0.88; P-trend = 0.008; HRper SD increment: 0.78; 95% CI: 0.66, 0.92). Analysis using RCS plots indicated a significant linear association between adherence to the ELD and reduced risk of HNCs and oral cavity and pharyngeal cancers (P-nonlinearity > 0.05). Subgroup analysis did not reveal significant interaction factors (P-interaction > 0.05), and sensitivity analysis confirmed the robustness of this study. Additionally, negative correlations were found between the consumption of fruits and whole grains and HNCs (fruits: HRQ4 vs Q1: 0.58; 95% CI: 0.40, 0.84; P-trend = 0.010; whole grains: HRQ4 vs Q1: 0.51; 95% CI: 0.26, 0.97; P-trend = 0.004). CONCLUSION: Adherence to ELD contributes to the prevention of HNCs.

Limited therapeutic options are available for patients with breast cancer brain metastases (BCBM), and thus there is an urgent need for novel treatment approaches. We previously engineered an effective oncolytic herpes simplex virus 1 (oHSV) expressing a full-length anti-CD47 monoclonal antibody (mAb) with a human IgG1 scaffold (OV-αCD47-G1) that was used to treat both ovarian cancer and glioblastoma. Here, we demonstrate that the combination of OV-αCD47-G1 and temozolomide (TMZ) improve outcomes in preclinical models of BCBM. The combination of TMZ with OV-αCD47-G1 synergistically increased macrophage phagocytosis against breast tumor cells and led to greater activation of NK cell cytotoxicity. In addition, the combination of OV-αCD47-G1 with TMZ significantly prolonged the survival of tumor-bearing mice when compared with TMZ or OV-αCD47-G1 alone. Combination treatment with the mouse counterpart of OV-αCD47-G1, termed OV-A4-IgG2b, also enhanced mouse macrophage phagocytosis, NK cell cytotoxicity, and survival in an immunocompetent model of mice bearing BCBM compared with TMZ or OV-A4-IgG2b alone. Collectively, these results suggest that OV-αCD47-G1 combined with TMZ should be explored in patients with BCBM.

Listeria monocytogenes (Lm) is a pathogenic bacteria able to grow at refrigerated temperatures, widely distributed in the environment. This bacteria is susceptible to contaminate various food products of which refrigerated ready-to-eat foods (RTEF) may pose a risk for public health. In Europe, food business operators (FBOs) shall ensure that foodstuffs comply with the relevant microbiological criteria set out in the Regulation (EC) N°2073/2005. Food safety criteria for Lm are defined in RTEF throughout their shelf-life. FBOs should implement studies to demonstrate that the concentration of Lm does not exceed 100 CFU/g at the end of the shelf-life, taking into account foreseeable conditions of distributions, storage and use, including the use by consumers. However, this last part of the cold chain for food products is the most difficult to capture and control. For this purpose, the European Union Reference Laboratory for Lm (EURL Lm) launched an inquiry to its National Reference Laboratory network and reviewed the scientific literature from 2002 to 2020. The outcomes were integrated in the technical guidance document of the EURL Lm to assess shelf-life of RTEF which resulted in the recommendation to use 10 °C as the reference temperature to simulate the reasonably foreseen storage conditions in domestic refrigerators.

This study investigated the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of chronic epipharyngitis, which presents a variety of symptoms, with a focus on autonomic neuropathy symptoms, and also investigated the literature for information on EAT, which is useful as a treatment method. The mechanism of action of EAT has recently been clarified in terms of its immune system-stimulating and endocrine system-stimulating effects. However, the autonomic nerve-stimulating effects of EAT are still largely unexplained. This study was conducted to collect and integrate previous studies and papers focusing on the autonomic nerve-stimulating effects of EAT and to provide insight into the still not fully elucidated autonomic nerve-stimulating effects of EAT on chronic epipharyngitis. The local stimulating effects of zinc chloride and the bleeding and pain effects of EAT are also summarized, suggesting that EAT exerts its therapeutic effects through the interaction of the immune system, the endocrine system, and the autonomic nervous system. It is important to determine which mechanism is predominantly involved in each case of chronic epipharyngitis and to utilize it in treatment. Elucidating the effects of EAT on the autonomic nervous system will be an important guideline in determining the treatment strategy for chronic epipharyngitis.

With the enormous progress in the field of cardiovascular imaging in recent years, computed tomography (CT) has become readily available to phenotype atherosclerotic coronary artery disease. New analytical methods using artificial intelligence (AI) enable the analysis of complex phenotypic information of atherosclerotic plaques. In particular, deep learning-based approaches using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) facilitate tasks such as lesion detection, segmentation, and classification. New radiotranscriptomic techniques even capture underlying bio-histochemical processes through higher-order structural analysis of voxels on CT images. In the near future, the international large-scale Oxford Risk Factors And Non-invasive Imaging (ORFAN) study will provide a powerful platform for testing and validating prognostic AI-based models. The goal is the transition of these new approaches from research settings into a clinical workflow. In this review, we present an overview of existing AI-based techniques with focus on imaging biomarkers to determine the degree of coronary inflammation, coronary plaques, and the associated risk. Further, current limitations using AI-based approaches as well as the priorities to address these challenges will be discussed. This will pave the way for an AI-enabled risk assessment tool to detect vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques and to guide treatment strategies for patients.

Fresh-cut produce is usually produced under standardized disinfection processes, which are unavailable at the ready-to-eat stage. Currently, chemical sanitizers are used for washing, but their disinfection efficacy is limited. In this study, UV-C (1.03 kJ/m2) was combined with organic acids that are generally recognized as safe (GRAS), including citric, malic, acetic, and lactic acids (LAs), to wash lettuce and cherry tomatoes that are contaminated with Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella Typhimurium. The results showed that LA was the most effective treatment among the single treatments, with a pathogen reduction and cross-contamination incidence of 2.0-2.3 log CFU/g and 28-35%, respectively. After combining with UV-C, the disinfection efficacy and cross-contamination prevention capacity of the four GRAS acids significantly improved. Among the combination treatments, the highest pathogen reduction (2.5-2.7 log CFU/g) and the lowest cross-contamination incidence (11-15%) were achieved by LA-UV. The analyses of ascorbic acid, chlorophyll, lycopene, antioxidant capacity, and ΔE indicated that neither the single nor combination treatments negatively affected the quality properties. These results provide a potential hurdle technology for fresh produce safety improvement at the ready-to-eat stage.

In the next decade, the US anticipates a rapid increase in the older adult population, who also face an increased risk for disease. To reduce this risk, research should explore increasing intake of nutrient-dense foods and prepared meals that include dairy foods and utilize novel food processing that better retain nutrients. This study identified attributes that older adults (age = 65+) desire in dairy-rich ready-to-eat breakfasts and desserts, two meals important in healthy aging. Two online choice-based conjoint analysis surveys were fielded (one for breakfast and one for dessert) to determine desirable attributes amongst respondents (breakfast n = 211; dessert n = 300). Breakfast concepts included protein source, primary ingredient, type of dairy, and health claim. Dessert concepts included primary flavor, primary sweetener, type of inclusion, and health claim. Breakfast results revealed the desirable attributes included "no meat" (utility value [UV] = 0.138), "eggs" (UV = 0.384), "cheese" (UV = 0.034), and "good source of fiber" (UV = 0.163). Two consumer clusters were identified with cluster 1 (n = 151) desiring "red meat" as the protein source and cluster 2 (n = 60) preferring "no meat." The majority of respondents (86%) indicated a willingness to consume foods processed with a novel technique. For the dessert meals, desirable attributes were "chocolate flavor" (UV = 0.638), "sugar" (UV = 0.859), "fruit inclusions" (UV = 0.522), and "heart-healthy" (UV = 0.453). Dessert consumer cluster 1 (n = 145) desired chocolate desserts sweetened with sugar, whereas cluster 2 (n = 155) desired vanilla desserts sweetened with honey. Participants who preferred oral manipulation of food via "smooshing" expressed a higher liking for desserts with no inclusions. These results provide insight for future product development for older adults involving dairy products or novel processing techniques. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: This study shows that both sensory attributes and health claims are important considerations when developing ready to eat meals for older adults. For breakfast, providing a vegetarian option is important while for desserts, both chocolate and vanilla remain popular options.

PURPOSE: The Eating Attitude Test-26 (EAT-26) is a screening tool for eating disorders (EDs) in clinical and non-clinical samples. The cut-off score was suggested to be varied according to target population. However, no studies have examined the appropriateness of the originally proposed score of 20 for screening DSM-5 eating disorders in Japan. This study aimed to identify an appropriate cut-off score to better differentiate clinical and non-clinical samples in Japan for EDs. METHODS: The participants consisted of 54 patients with anorexia nervosa restricting type, 58 patients with anorexia nervosa binge-eating/purging type, 37 patients with bulimia nervosa diagnosed according to DSM-5 criteria, and 190 healthy controls (HCs). Welch's t test was used to assess differences in age, body mass index (BMI), and total EAT-26 scores between HCs and patients with EDs. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was conducted to identify the optimal cut-off score. RESULTS: The HCs had significantly higher BMI and lower total EAT-26 mean scores than patients with EDs. The area under the ROC curve was 0.925, indicating that EAT-26 had excellent performance in discriminating patients with EDs from HCs. An optimal cut-off score of 17 was identified, with sensitivity and specificity values of 0.866 and 0.868, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The result supports the suggestions that optimal cut-off score should be different according to target populations. The newly identified cut-off score of 17 would enable the identification of patients with EDs who have been previously classified as non-clinical samples in the EAT-26 test. PURPOSE: To describe adherence to sustainable healthy diets among a sample of 958 Chilean pre-schoolers (3-6 years) and explore associations between adherence and child and maternal sociodemographic and anthropometric characteristics. METHODS: Children's adherence to sustainable healthy diets was calculated from single multiple-pass 24-h dietary recalls using the Planetary Health Diet Index for children and adolescents (PHDI-C). Higher PHDI-C scores (max score = 150 points) represent greater adherence. Adjusted linear regression models were fitted to explore associations between PHDI-C scores and child and maternal characteristics. RESULTS: Children obtained low total PHDI-C scores (median 50.0 [IQR 39.5-59.8] points). This resulted from low consumption of nuts & peanuts, legumes, vegetables, whole cereals, and vegetable oils; a lack of balance between dark green and red & orange vegetables, inadequate consumption of tubers & potatoes and eggs & white meats, and excess consumption of dairy products, palm oil, red meats, and added sugars. Mean PHDI-C total score was significantly higher (50.6 [95%CI 49.6, 51.7] vs 47.3 [95%CI 45.0, 49.5]) among children whose mothers were ≥ 25 years compared to those with younger mothers. Positive associations were observed between scores for fruits and maternal education, vegetables and maternal age, added sugars and child weight status, while negative associations were observed between fruits and child age, and vegetable oils and maternal education. Scores for dairy products PHDI-C component were lower among girls. CONCLUSION: Adherence to sustainable healthy diets was low among this sample of Chilean children and was significantly associated with maternal age, being lower among children whose mothers were younger.

IMPORTANCE: Epicardial adipose tissue (EAT) is a biologically active organ surrounding myocardium and coronary arteries that has been associated with coronary artery disease (CAD) and atrial fibrillation. Previous work has shown that EAT exhibits beige features. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to determine whether the stromal vascular fraction of the human EAT contains innate or adaptive lymphoid cells compared to thoracic subcutaneous (thSAT), visceral abdominal (VAT) and subcutaneous abdominal (abSAT). PARTICIPANTS: New pangenomic microarray analysis was performed on previous transcriptomic dataset using significance analysis of microarray and ingenuity pathway analysis (n=41) to identify specific immune signature and its link with browning genes. EAT, thSAT, VAT and abSAT samples from explanted patients with severe cardiomyopathies and multi-organ donor patients (n=17) were used for flow cytometry (FC) immunophenotyping assay. Patients were on average 55±16 years-old; 47% had hypertension and 6% CAD. Phenotypic adaptive and innate immune profiles were performed using a TBNK panel and a specific ILC1-2-3 panel including CD127, CD117, CRTH2 (CD294) and activation markers such as CD25 and CD69. RESULTS: Transcriptomic analysis showed a significant positive correlation between the TH2 immune pathway (IL-4, IL-5, IL-13, IL-25, IL-33) and browning genes (UCP-1, PRDM16, TMEM26, CITED1, TBX1) in EAT versus thSAT (R=0.82, P<0.0001). Regarding adaptive immune cells, a preponderance of CD8T cells, a contingent of CD4T cells, and a few B cells were observed in all ATs (P<0.0001). In innate lymphoid cells (ILCs), an increase was observed in visceral ATs (i.e. EAT; VAT 35±8ILCs/g of tissue) compared to their subcutaneous counterpart (i.e. thSAT+abSAT: 8±3 ILCs/g of AT, P=0.002), with a difference in the proportion of the 3 subtypes of ILCs (ILC1>ILC3>ILC2). In addition, we observed an increase in EAT-ILC2 compared to other ATs and almost all these EAT-ILC2 expressed CD69 and/or CD25 activation markers (99.75±0.16%; P<0.0001). We also observed more NKs in EAT and VAT (1520±71 cells/g of AT) than in SATs (562±17 cells/g of AT); P=0.01. CONCLUSION: This is the first study to provide a comparison between innate and adaptive lymphoid cells in human epicardial versus abdominal or thoracic adipose tissues. Phagocytosis, a vital defense mechanism, involves the recognition and elimination of foreign substances by cells. Phagocytes, such as neutrophils and macrophages, rapidly respond to invaders; macrophages are especially important in later stages of the immune response. They detect "find me" signals to locate apoptotic cells and migrate toward them. Apoptotic cells then send "eat me" signals that are recognized by phagocytes via specific receptors. "Find me" and "eat me" signals can be strategically harnessed to modulate antitumor immunity in support of cancer therapy. These signals, such as calreticulin and phosphatidylserine, mediate potent pro-phagocytic effects, thereby promoting the engulfment of dying cells or their remnants by macrophages, neutrophils, and dendritic cells and inducing tumor cell death. This review summarizes the phagocytic "find me" and "eat me" signals, including their concepts, signaling mechanisms, involved ligands, and functions. Furthermore, we delineate the relationships between "find me" and "eat me" signaling molecules and tumors, especially the roles of these molecules in tumor initiation, progression, diagnosis, and patient prognosis. The interplay of these signals with tumor biology is elucidated, and specific approaches to modulate "find me" and "eat me" signals and enhance antitumor immunity are explored. Additionally, novel therapeutic strategies that combine "find me" and "eat me" signals to better bridge innate and adaptive immunity in the treatment of cancer patients are discussed.

Plastic pollution is increasingly found in agricultural environments, where it contaminates soil and crops. Microbial biofilms rapidly colonise environmental plastics, such as the plastic mulches used in agricultural systems, which provide a unique environment for microbial plastisphere communities. Human pathogens can also persist in the plastisphere, and enter agricultural environments via flooding or irrigation with contaminated water. In this study we examined whether Salmonella Typhimurium and Vibrio cholerae can be transferred from the plastisphere on plastic mulch to the surface of ready-to-eat crop plants, and subsequently persist on the leaf surface. Both S. Typhimurium and V. cholerae were able to persist for 14 days on fragments of plastic mulch adhering to the surface of leaves of both basil and spinach. Importantly, within 24 h both pathogens were capable of dissociating from the surface of the plastic and were transferred onto the surface of both basil and spinach leaves. This poses a further risk to food safety and human health, as even removal of adhering plastics and washing of these ready-to-eat crops would not completely remove these pathogens. As the need for more intensive food production increases, so too does the use of plastic mulches in agronomic systems. Therefore, there is now an urgent need to understand the unquantified co-pollutant pathogen risk of contaminating agricultural and food production systems with plastic pollution.

Foodborne illnesses caused by the consumption of contaminated foods have frequent occurrences in developing countries. The incorporation of contaminated water in food processes, preparation, and serving is directly linked to several gastrointestinal infections. Keeping in view, this study was conducted to assess the microbial quality of both drinking water sources and commonly consumed fresh ready-to-eat (RTE) foods in the region. The drinking water samples from water sources and consumer points, as well as food samples from canteens, cafes, hotels, and restaurants, were collected for the microbiological analysis. Fifty-five percent (n = 286) of water samples were found to be positive for total coliforms with MPN counts ranging from 3 to 2600 (100 ml) -1. E. coli was detected in nearly 30% of the total water samples. Overall, 65% tap water samples were found unsatisfactory, followed by submersible (53%), filter (40%), and WTP (30%) sources. Furthermore, the examination of RTE foods (n = 80) found that 60% were of unsatisfactory microbial quality with high aerobic plate counts. The salads were the most contaminated category with highest mean APC 8.3 log CFU/g followed by pani puri, chats, and chutneys. Presence of coliforms and common enteropathogens was observed in both water and food samples. The detected isolates from the samples were identified as Enterobacter spp., Klebsiella spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., and Staphylococcus spp. Based on these findings, microbiological quality was found compromised and this may pose hazard to public health. This exploratory study in the Punjab region also suggests that poor microbiological quality of water sources can be an important source of contamination for fresh uncooked RTE foods, thus transferring pathogens to the food chain. Therefore, only safe potable drinking water post-treatment should be used at all stages.

RESUMO

The increase in substance use during pregnancy results in a higher incidence of neonatal abstinence syndrome/neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome (NAS/NOWS), straining health care and social systems and creating an economic burden. There is a paradigm shift in transitioning the care approach for NAS/NOWS from a medical model of care to a family-centered individualized non-pharmacological care approach with non-pharmacological interventions as the first line of treatment. Supporting families after birth with a nurturing environment and providing them with a toolbox of non-pharmacological interventions prepares them for the transition from hospital to home.

Texture deterioration of meat products upon high-temperature sterilization is a pressing issue in the meat industry. This study evaluated the effect of different thermal sterilization temperatures on the textural and juiciness of ready-to-eat (RTE) chicken breast. In this study, by dynamically monitoring the texture and juiciness of chicken meat products during the process of thermal sterilization, it has been observed that excessively high sterilization temperatures (above 100°C) significantly diminish the shear force, springiness and water-holding capacity of the products. Furthermore, from the perspective of myofibrillar protein degradation, molecular mechanisms have been elucidated, unveiling that the thermal sterilization treatment at 121°C/10 min triggers the degradation of myosin heavy chains and F-actin, disrupting the lattice arrangement of myofilaments, compromising the integrity of sarcomeres, and resulting in an increase of approximately 40.66% in the myofibrillar fragmentation index, thus diminishing the quality characteristics of the products. This study unravels the underlying mechanisms governing the dynamic changes in quality of chicken meat products during the process of thermal sterilization, thereby providing theoretical guidance for the development of high-quality chicken products.
