Os Centros de Tradições Gaúchas (CTG) são entidades de divulgação e perpetuação da cultura do Rio Grande do Sul. A produção de refeições nessas entidades ocorre nos ensaios dos grupos de danças tradicionais e nos eventos oferecidos à comunidade, como jantares. Sabendo do impacto das doenças transmitidas por alimentos (DTA) na saúde humana, o objetivo deste trabalho é identificar a adequação dos CTG às boas práticas para manipulação de alimentos (BPM), explorar quem são os responsáveis pelas atividades de manipulação de alimentos e identificar a frequência e o número da produção de refeições servidas nessas instituições. A Portaria SES-RS nº 78/2009 e um questionário de coleta de dados dos grupos de dança e da produção de refeições foram aplicados em 5 CTG do Rio Grande do Sul. Outros 17 CTG do estado responderam a um segundo questionário, semelhante ao primeiro, com adição de perguntas sobre controle sanitário. Obteve-se uma média de adequação às BPM de 38% entre os CTG. Verificou-se que são servidas, em média, 4 refeições por semana entre os ensaios das invernadas artísticas próximos a competições. Em 36% dos CTG, ocorrem de 2 a 3 eventos por trimestre com produção de refeições. Em 45% dos CTG, são servidas de 100 a 200 pessoas nos eventos. Em relação aos trabalhos na cozinha, apenas 23,5% dos CTG têm como responsáveis dessas atividades pessoas devidamente capacitadas. Sendo os CTG instituições sem fins lucrativos, a criação de programas para a garantia do alimento seguro nesses espaços se faz necessária.


Centros de Tradições Gaúchas (CTG) are entities for the dissemination and perpetuation of Rio Grande do Sul culture. The production of meals in these entities takes place in the rehearsals of traditional dance groups and in events offered to the community, such as dinners. Knowing the impact of the foodborne diseases in human health, the objective of this work is to identify the adequacy of CTG to good food handling practices, to explore who are responsibles for food handling activities and identify the frequency and number of meals served in these institutions. The Portaria SES-RS No. 78/2009 and a questionnaire for data collection from dance groups and meals production were applied in 5 CTG in Rio Grande do Sul. Another 17 CTG in the state answered a second questionnaire, similar to the first, with the addition of questions about sanitary control. The average compliance with good practices was 38% among the CTG. It was found that, on average, 4 meals are served per week between rehearsals of the dance groups close to competitions. In 36% of the CTG, 2 to 3 events are held per quarter with production of meals. In 45% of the CTG, the number of people served at the events varies from 100 to 200. Regarding the work in the kitchen, only 23.5% of the CTG have duly trained people for these activities. Given that CTG are non-profit institutions, the creation of programs to ensure food safety in these spaces is necessary.

The neural connectivity among the oral cavity, pharynx, and esophagus is a critical component of infant feeding physiology. Central integration of oral and pharyngeal afferents alters motor outputs to structures that power swallowing, but the potential effects of esophageal afferents on pre-esophageal feeding physiology are unclear. These effects may explain the prevalence of oropharyngeal dysphagia in infants suffering from gastroesophageal reflux (GER), though the mechanism underlying this relationship remains unknown. Here we use the validated infant pig model to assess the impacts of simulated GER on pre-esophageal feeding parameters. We used high-speed videofluoroscopy and electromyography to record bottle-feeding prior to and following infusion of a capsaicin-containing solution into the lower esophagus. Sucking parameters were minimally affected by capsaicin exposure, such that genioglossus activity was unchanged and tongue kinematics were largely unaffected. Aspects of the pharyngeal swallow were altered with simulated GER, including increased thyrohyoid muscle activity, increased excursions of the hyoid and thyroid per swallow, decreased swallow frequency, and increased bolus sizes. These results suggest that esophageal afferents can elicit changes in pharyngeal swallowing. Additionally, decreased swallowing frequency may be the mechanism by which esophageal pathologies induce oropharyngeal dysphagia. While recent work indicates that oral or pharyngeal capsaicin may improve dysphagia symptoms, the decreased performance following esophageal capsaicin exposure highlights the importance of designing sensory interventions based upon neurophysiology and the mechanisms underlying disordered feeding. This mechanistic approach requires comprehensive data collection across the entirety of the feeding process, which can be achieved using models such as the infant pig.

This study investigated the effects of exclusive donor milk or formula in the first 7 days after birth, on the time to full enteral feeding, growth, and morbidity of adverse events related to premature infants. This was a retrospective study carried out from July 2014 to December 2019 at the Department of Neonatology of Shanghai Children's Hospital. All infants with a birth weight < 1,500 g and a gestational age ≤ 32 who received exclusive donor milk or formula in the first 7 days after birth were included in this study. The time to full enteral feeding (defined as 150 mL/kg) in the donor milk group was significantly shorter than in the formula group (18 vs. 22 days, p = 0.01). Donated breast milk was also associated with a lower incidence of NEC (4.4 vs. 7%, p < 0.01), ROP (3.8 vs. 13.2%, p < 0.01), and culture-confirmed sepsis (11 vs. 22.6%, p < 0.01). Using donated breast milk instead of current formula milk for early enteral nutrition can shorten the time to full enteral feeding and reduce the incidence of NEC, ROP, and sepsis.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Food allergy has several negative nutritional consequences and may persist beyond the first year of lives. This study aimed to assess the role of a complete oral amino acid-based supplement in the diet of children on cow's milk protein elimination diet because of food allergy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study included two groups of children aged 1-5 years paired by age and socioeconomic status: (1) study group, on cow's milk protein elimination diet plus an oral amino acid-based supplement, and (2) control group, on cow's milk protein elimination diet. Sociodemographic, clinical, anthropometric, and dietary data were obtained through online interviews. Two 24-h dietary recalls were collected on nonconsecutive days. Both groups comprised mostly boys. RESULTS: The study group presented lower values of body mass index. The frequency of feeding difficulties was similar between groups. The study group had a higher intake of energy, protein, carbohydrates, calcium, iron, zinc, phosphorus, magnesium, copper, selenium, vitamins D, E, B1, B2, B6, and B12, niacin, and folic acid compared to the control group. A higher proportion of children in the study group had adequate intake according to the recommendations made for energy, carbohydrates, iron, phosphorus, selenium, vitamins A, D, E, B1, B2, and B6, and folic acid. CONCLUSIONS: The use of a complete oral amino acid-based supplement has a positive effect on the diet quality of preschoolers on cow's milk elimination diet because of food allergy, promoting higher intake of energy, calcium, vitamin D, and other essential nutrients.

Leptins and other related genes have been proven to play vital roles in food intake, weight control, and other life activities. While the function of leptins in yellowtail kingfish (Seriola lalandi) has not yet been explored, in the present study, we investigated the structure and preliminary function of four leptin-related genes in S. lalandi. In detail, the sequence of two leptin genes (lepa and lepb), one leptin receptor gene (lepr), and one leptin receptor overlapping transcript (leprot) gene were obtained by homology cloning and RACE methods, in which lepa and lepb have similar structure. Moreover, homologous sequence alignment and evolutionary analysis of all four genes were clustered with Seriola dumerili. The tissue distribution of these four genes in thirteen tissues of yellowtail kingfish was detected by RT-qPCR. Both lepa and leprot were highly expressed in the brain and ovary, while lepb was highly expressed in the pituitary, gill, muscle, and ovary; lepr was highly expressed in the gill, kidney, and ovary. Additionally, these four genes also played roles in embryo development and early growth and development of larvae and juveniles of yellowtail kingfish. Finally, the function of leptin and leptin-related genes was investigated during fasting and re-feeding adaption of yellowtail kingfish. The results showed that these four genes have different regulation functions in five tissues; for example, the mRNA levels of lepa, lepr, and leprot in the brain decreased during fasting and immediately increased after re-feeding, while the mRNA level of lepb did not show significant fluctuation during starvation but significantly lowered after re-feeding. However, lepa and lepb mRNA levels were significantly elevated during fasting and returned to control levels after re-feeding, and there were no significant changes in the expression of lepr and leprot in the liver during fasting and after re-feeding. Moreover, the body mass of fish in the experimental group was measured, and compensatory growth was found after the resumption of feeding. These results suggested that leptin and receptor genes play different functions in different tissues to regulate the physiological state of fish in food deficiency and gain processes.

PURPOSE: Older patients with pneumonia are commonly restricted from oral intake due to concerns towards aspiration. Eating and drinking with acknowledged risks (EDAR) is a shared decision-making process emphasising patient comfort. As part of our project to find the barriers and facilitators of EDAR, we aimed for this initial study to see how frequently EDAR was selected in practice. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study at an acute hospital where EDAR was initially developed, of patients aged ≥ 75 years-old admitted with pneumonia and referred to speech and language therapy. RESULTS: Out of 216 patients, EDAR decisions were made in 14.4%. The EDAR group had a higher 1-year mortality than the modified/normal diet groups (p < 0.001). Pneumonia recurrence rate did not differ significantly between the groups (p = 0.070). CONCLUSION: EDAR decisions were comparatively less common and most were associated with end-of-life care. Underlying reasons for the low EDAR application rate must be investigated to maximise patient autonomy and comfort as intended by EDAR while minimising staff burden.

Differences in the physical and behavioral attributes of prey are likely to impose disparate demands of force and speed on the jaws of a predator. Because of biomechanical trade-offs between force and speed, this presents an interesting conundrum for predators of diverse prey types. Loggerhead shrikes (Lanius ludovicianus) are medium-sized (∼50 g) passeriform birds that dispatch and feed on a variety of arthropod and vertebrate prey, primarily using their beaks. We used high-speed video of shrikes biting a force transducer in lateral view to obtain corresponding measurements of bite force, upper and lower bill linear and angular displacements, and velocities. Our results show that upper bill depression (about the craniofacial hinge) is more highly correlated with bite force, whereas lower bill elevation is more highly correlated with jaw-closing velocity. These results suggest that the upper and lower jaws might play different roles for generating force and speed (respectively) in these and perhaps other birds as well. We hypothesize that a division of labor between the jaws may allow shrikes to capitalize on elements of force and speed without compromising performance. As expected on theoretical grounds, bite force trades-off against jaw-closing velocity during the act of biting, although peak bite force and jaw-closing velocity across individual shrikes show no clear signs of a force-velocity trade-off. As a result, shrikes appear to bite with jaw-closing velocities and forces that maximize biting power, which may be selectively advantageous for predators of diverse prey that require both jaw-closing force and speed.

The El Niño 2015 event, most extreme since 1997, led to severe droughts in tropical wet Papua New Guinea (PNG), reducing May to October dry season rainfall by 75% in the lowlands and 25% in the highlands. Such droughts are likely to have significant effects on terrestrial ecosystems, but they have been poorly explored in Papua New Guinea. Here, we report changes in bird community composition prior to, during, and after the 2015 El Niño event along the elevational gradient ranging from 200 m to 2700 m a.s.l. at the Mt. Wilhelm rainforest in PNG. The abundance of birds in the lowlands dropped by 60% but increased by 40% at elevations above 1700 m during El Niño year. In the following year, the individual bird species reached mean population sizes similar to pre-El Niño years but did not fully recover. Species richness roughly followed the pattern of observed abundance and quickly and fully re-established after the event to the pre- El Niño values. Thus, at least some terrestrial birds seem to react quickly to the extreme droughts in lowlands and shift to less affected mountain habitats. We recorded upper elevational range limits to shifts by more than 500 m a.s.l. in 22 bird species (out of 237 recorded in total) during El Niño year, in contrast to their typical ranges. Our study suggests that a strong El Niño event can have strong but reversible effects on bird communities as long as they have an opportunity to move to more favorable sites through undisturbed habitats.

There is a reliable association between autism and Feeding and Eating Disorders. Concerningly, where these two conditions co-occur, clinical outcomes of Feeding and Eating Disorders are significantly worse, and treatment less effective, than when the Feeding and Eating Disorders occur in neurotypical individuals. Problematically, the reason for the association between autism and Feeding and Eating Disorders is poorly understood, which constrains advances in clinical care. This paper outlines several possible mechanisms that may underlie the observed association and suggests ways in which they may be empirically tested. Mechanisms are split into those producing an artefactual association, and those reflecting a genuine link between conditions. Artefactual associations may be due to conceptual overlap in both diagnostic criteria and measurement, Feeding and Eating Disorders causing transient autistic traits, or the association being non-specific in nature. A genuine association between autism and Feeding and Eating Disorders may be due to common causal factors, autism directly or indirectly causing Feeding and Eating Disorders, and Feeding and Eating Disorders being a female manifestation of autism.

This study investigated how process parameters of laser cladding affect the microstructure and mechanical properties of WC-12Co composite coating for use as a protective layer of continuous caster rolls. WC-Co powders, WC-Ni powders, and Ni-Cr alloy powder with various wear resistance characteristics were evaluated in order to determine their applicability for use as cladding materials for continuous caster roll coating. The cladding process was conducted with various parameters, including laser powers, cladding speeds, and powder feeding rates, then the phases, microstructure, and micro-hardness of the cladding layer were analyzed in each specimen. Results indicate that, to increase the hardness of the cladding layer in WC-Co composite coating, the dilution of the cladding layer by dissolution of Fe from the substrate should be minimized, and the formation of the Fe-Co alloy phase should be prevented. The mechanical properties and wear resistance of each powder with the same process parameters were compared and analyzed. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the laser cladding layer depend not only on the process parameters, but also on the powder characteristics, such as WC particle size and the type of binder material. Additionally, depending on the degree of thermal decomposition of WC particles and evolution of W distribution within the cladding layer, the hardness of each powder can differ significantly, and the wear mechanism can change.

Human milk is a biofluid with a unique composition among mammalian milks. Besides this milk's major components, its bioactive compounds, like hormones, immune factors, and oligosaccharides, are unique and important for infant growth and development. The best form of nutrition for term and preterm infants is the mother's own milk. However, in the absence of the mother's own milk, donor milk should be made available. Milk banks support neonatal intensive care units by providing preterm infants with human milk that generally has reasonable nutritive value for this sensitive population. However, neither mother's own milk nor donor milk has sufficient energy content for the growth of preterm babies, so adequate human milk supplementation is crucial for their progress. Due to the different characteristics of human breast milk, as well as ubiquitous environmental pollutants, such as microplastics, new methods are required for monitoring the quality and characteristics of human milk, which will lay a solid foundation for the further development and progress of human milk research.

RESUMO

Feeding a neonate baby with a complete cleft lip and palate is a problematic pursuit because of the communication between the oral and the nasal cavity and associated problems. This present case is of a 6-day-old underweight neonate with feeding difficulties due to the cleft palate. In this case report, simple, uncomplicated steps for the fabrication of a feeding obturator are explained to aid in the proper nourishment of neonates for definite corrective procedures in the future with overall growth.

Background and aim: Monitoring of gastric residual volume (GRV) to assess for enteral feeding intolerance is common practice in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting; however, evidence to support the practice is lacking. The aim of this study was: (i) to gain a perspective of current practice in adult ICUs in the UK around enteral feeding and monitoring of GRV, (ii) to characterise the threshold value used for a high GRV in clinical practice, (iii) to describe the impact of GRV monitoring on enteral feeding provision and (iv) to inform future research into the clinical value of GRV measurement in the adult ICU population. Methods: A web-based survey was sent to all UK adult ICUs. The survey consisted of questions pertaining to (i) nutritional assessment and enteral feeding practices, (ii) enteral feeding intolerance and GRV monitoring and (iii) management of raised GRV. Results: Responses were received from 101 units. Ninety-eight percent of units reported routinely measuring GRV, with 86% of ICUs using GRV to define enteral feeding intolerance. Threshold values for a high GRV varied from 200 to 1000 ml with frequency of measurement also differing greatly from 2 to 12 hourly. Initiation of pro-kinetic medication was the most common treatment for a high GRV. Fifty-two percent of respondents stated that volume of GRV would influence their decision to stop enteral feeds a lot or very much. Only 28% of units stated that they had guidelines for the technique for monitoring GRV. Conclusions: Measurement of GRV is the most common method of determining enteral feeding intolerance in adult ICUs in the UK. The practice continues despite evidence of poor validity and reproducibility of this measurement. Further research should be undertaken into the benefit of ongoing GRV measurements in the adult ICU population and alternative markers of enteral feeding intolerance.

Background: This experiment was conducted in the Research and Application Field of Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Faculty of Agriculture, during the 2020 and 2021 summer period. The objective of this experiment was to determine the effects of different harvesting heights on forage yields and crude ash, fat, protein, and carbon and nitrogen content of leaves and stalks of sweet sorghum (SS) and sorghum sudangrass hybrid (SSH) cultivars. Methods: Nutri Honey and Nutrima varieties of SSH and the M81-E and Topper-76 varieties of SS were used in this study. The experiment was conducted using the randomized complete block design with four replications. The main plots each included two early and late varieties of SS and SSH cultivars, while the subplots were used to test different harvesting heights (30, 60, 90, 120, 150 cm) and physiological parameters of each crop. Results: The results of this study showed that dry forage yields increased with plant growth, with the amount of forage produced at the end of the growth cycle increasing 172.2% compared to the early growth stages. Carbon (C) content of leaves decreased by 6.5%, nitrogen (N) by 46%, crude protein (CP) by 54%, crude fat (CF) by 34%, while crude ash (CA) content increased by 6% due to the increase in plant height harvest. At the same time, in parallel with the increase in plant height at harvest, the nitrogen content of the stems of the plants decreased by 87%, crude protein by 65%, crude ash by 33% and crude fat by 41%, while the carbon content increased by 4%. As plant height at harvest increased, hay yield increased but nutrient contents of the hay decreased. However, the Nutrima, Nutri Honey and M81-E sorghum cultivars, harvested three times at heights of 90 to 120 cm, are recommended for the highest yield.

Background: The increasing prevalence of obesity and overweight among health workers calls for an appraisal of their lifestyle. This study assessed medical practitioners' workhour feeding and lifestyle practices and explored the relationship between these practices and their body mass index (BMI). Methods: The survey involved 321 medical practitioners selected from 9 northern Nigeria hospitals in 2021. Data collected included biodata, medication history, workhour feeding characteristics, lifestyle behaviours, blood pressure, height, and weight measurements. Data were analyzed using Epi info software (version 7). Results: Most respondents were male (70.7%). Their mean age was 38 ± 7.4 years. During their last workhours, 84.1% had lunch, and 46.4% took sugary drinks. Usually, 41.7% source their lunch from the hospital canteen, and 18.7% patronize their canteen at least weekly. Most reported healthy behaviour towards alcohol consumption (99.7%), fruit and vegetable consumption (54.8%) and smoking (98.4%). However, only 22.4% were physically active. Their mean healthy behaviour score and BMI were 2.8 ± 0.7 and 26.1 ± 4.6 kg/m2, respectively. The obesity and overweight rates were 18.4% and 37.7%, respectively. Their source of lunch during workhours, age, sex, years of practice, employment duration, marital status, job category, systolic blood pressure, anti-hypertensive, and antidiabetic medication use were significantly associated with mean BMI. However, only antihypertensive medication use, being married, inadequate fruit/vegetable consumption and workhour sugary drinks consumption predicted obesity. The predictors of overweight/obese were years of practice (< 10 y) and use of antihypertensive medications. Conclusions: Obesity and overweight rates were high. Most were physically inactive. Workhour sugary drink consumption predicted obesity. Effective workplace and community interventions to improve practitioners' lifestyle behaviour and curtail obesity and overweight are needed.

OBJECTIVE: In anorexia nervosa (AN), the traits of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are associated with poor outcomes. However, the subtle nature of these characteristics remains poorly understood. We investigated the in-depth patterns of ASD traits using Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule-Second Edition (ADOS-2) in women with AN. METHODS: Of 28 women with ICD-10 AN, 16 (age 19-30 years) participated in the ADOS-2, a video-recorded, semistructured diagnostic assessment for social communication and interaction and restricted, repetitive behaviors and interests related to ASD. None of the participants had previously been diagnosed with ASD. Other measurements included the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire and the Wechsler Abbreviated Scale of Intelligence-IV. RESULTS: Five individuals (18% of all, 31% of those assessed) scored above the cutoff for autism in ADOS-2. They had challenges in social communication and interaction, manifesting as sustained difficulties in social relationships and deficits in conversation skills. Few described being frequently misunderstood by others, including in the eating disorder treatment settings. Three individuals showed prominent restricted and repetitive behaviors such as ritual seeking, eating-related routines, sensory sensitivity related to food texture and selective eating, and intense interest in specific topics. The mean duration of AN in women above the cutoff was twice as long compared with those below (12.3 vs. 6.2 years). DISCUSSION: The ASD-related characteristics and behavior appear to contribute to the manifestation and duration of AN in a subgroup of women. Among these women, the traits of ASD appear to be mixed with eating disorder symptoms, which should be taken into account in the treatment.

OBJECTIVE: to investigate the ability of mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) to avoid gastrostomy tube (G-tube). DATA SOURCES: PubMed, EBSCOhost, Cochrane, and Embase. REVIEW METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the number of MDO cases performed at our institution for patients with Robin Sequence (RS) over the past 10 years. In our institutional review, patients were excluded if they had a G-tube already placed at the time of surgery. We also performed a systematic review of the literature. Articles were excluded if they did not detail feeding outcomes after MDO, or if MDO was performed on patients that did not have RS. RESULTS: In our systematic review, 12 articles were included that comprised a total of 209 neonates with RS that underwent MDO. A total of 174 (83.3%) patients avoided a G-tube once MDO was performed. A total of 14 patients met the inclusion criteria at our institution. Of the 14 RS patients, 9 (64%) avoided having a G-tube placed and all (14/14) avoided tracheostomy. The average birth weight of patients avoiding a G-tube was 3.11 kg compared to 2.25 kg (P = .045) in the group requiring a G-tube. In the group avoiding a G-tube, the average weight at time of operation was 3.46 kg compared to 2.83 kg (P = .037) in the group requiring a G-tube. CONCLUSION: MDO may be considered as a surgical option to prevent G-tube placement for neonates with non-syndromic RS who have difficulty with PO feeding but whose airway obstruction is not severe enough to require respiratory support. Based on our institutional experience, a minimum weight of 3.00 kg correlated with higher success rates of PO intake and avoiding a G-tube.

AIMS AND METHOD: The COVID-19 pandemic prompted a surge in adolescent eating disorders and rapid changes in the delivery of intensive community treatments. This study investigates the modification from a group-based day programme to an intensive family treatment approach. A retrospective chart review was performed on data from 190 patients who accessed the intensive service for anorexia nervosa in the past 6 years. Outcomes from the traditional model were compared with the new intensive family model, namely length of admission, percentage median body mass index difference and transfers to in-patient services. RESULTS: There was a significant reduction in the length of intensive treatment (from 143.19 to 97.20 days). The number of transfers to specialist eating disorder in-patient services also significantly reduced, and is decreasing year on year. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: The findings hold particular relevance as intensive services for adolescent eating disorders continue to be established within health services, with no clear unified approach to treatment.

BACKGROUND: Patients requiring enteral nutrition (EN) after neurological insults experience feeding interruptions, contributing to inadequate nutrition delivery. This prospective cohort study investigated if volume-based enteral feeding (VBF) improved the delivery of prescribed EN volume in ward patients with acute neurological conditions. METHODS: Over two sequential periods, the usual care group received standard continuous rate-based feeding, and the intervention group received VBF with bi-daily EN rate adjustments to achieve target daily volume. The primary outcome was percentage of prescribed daily EN formula volume delivered. Differences in energy and protein provision, weight, malnutrition and safety were explored. An evaluation survey captured nurse acceptability of the protocol. RESULTS: The intervention group (n = 32) achieved greater median interquartile range (IQR) EN adequacy of prescribed volume at 92% (88-97) compared to 67% (54-78) for usual care (n = 35) (p < 0.001). VBF compared to rate-based feeding resulted in patients receiving more kilojoules (131 [121-138] kJ/kg vs. 84 [64-99] kJ/kg; p < 0.001) and protein (1.3 [1.2-1.5] g/kg vs. 0.9 [0.6-1.1] g/kg; p < 0.001). There were no differences in gastrointestinal intolerance between groups. Compliance to the VBF protocol was 90%, and 78% of staff reported high confidence using the protocol. The intervention group had less median weight loss at discharge (-1.4 [0.1 to -4.3] kg) than usual care (-3.6 [-1.3 to 8.4] kg; p < 0.011), but no differences in malnutrition status were observed. CONCLUSION: A VBF protocol delivered greater EN volume, energy and protein following neurological injury. The VBF protocol was feasible with high acceptability from nursing staff.

In pursuit of sustainable protein sources, the agricultural sector and emerging edible insect industry intersect in the valorization of agricultural by-products. Establishing a mutually beneficial relationship involves utilizing agricultural by-products as feeding substrates for insect farming, potentially enhancing the sustainability of both sectors. In the present study, by-products from beer, rice, oat, maize, sunflower, and lucerne, as well as mill residues and spent mushroom substrate from the regions of Thessaly and Central Macedonia (Greece) were investigated as nutritional sources for the larvae of the yellow mealworm (Tenebrio molitor). Results show that the suitability of the tested by-products for rearing T. molitor larvae varies greatly, with larvae surviving better in some by-products than in others. The highest survival rate and the highest weight of larvae were recorded for larvae reared on rice bran, spent grains, and oat by-products. Similarly, high feed conversion and growth rate were observed when the larvae were fed with rice bran and spent grains. Thus, this research promotes cost-effective and sustainable T. molitor rearing, aligning with circular economy principles.
