RESUMO

The use of various harmful substances for fumigation and preservation of goods during their transportation in containers to preserve it for longer time are widely used in sea transportations. In the context of increasing demand for carriage of goods in containers by sea, issue of customs officials safety, who are, as part of their duty customs inspection, the first to open container treated with fumigants, is becoming increasingly relevant. The results of analysis established absence of clear legal regulation of issues related to ensuring security of customs officials authorized to conduct customs inspections, both at international and national levels. In this regard, detailed analysis of main fumigants that customs inspector may encounter in his professional work is presented in this article. The risks of negative effect of fumigants on inspector health are studied and appropriate conclusions and recommendations regarding the legal and technical regulation of this question are formulated.

In this study, the volatilomes of naturally growing plant leaves were immobilized in a suitable substrate to enhance vapors' diffusion in the soil to eradicate the Fusarium wilt pathogens in Tomato. Volatilomes produced by Mentha spicata leaves immobilized in vermiculite ball was found to be effective and exhibit 92.35 percent inhibition on the mycelial growth of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (FOL). Moreover, the volatilomes of M. spicata immobilized vermiculite balls were tested based on the distance traveled by the diffused volatilomes from the ball and revealed that the volatilomes of M. spicata traveled up to 20 cm distance from the center of PVC (Polyvinly chloride) chamber showed maximum reduction in colony growth of FOL at 12th day after inoculation. Tomato plants inoculated with FOL revealed increased expressions of defense gene, pathogenesis related protein (PR1) with 2.63-fold after 72 h and the gene, transcription factor (WRKY) increased with 2.5-fold after 48 h on exposure to the volatilomes of M. spicata vermiculite balls. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on development of volatilomes based vermiculite ball formulations. This result indicated that the volatilomes of M. spicata are promising phyto-fumigants for management of Tomato Fusarial wilt.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the potential geospatial relationship between agricultural pesticide use and two cancer metrics (pediatric cancer incidence and total cancer incidence) across each of the 11 contiguous states in the Western United States at state and county resolution. The pesticide usage data were collected from the U.S. Geological Survey Pesticide National Synthesis Project database, while cancer data for each state were compiled from the National Cancer Institute State Cancer Profiles. At the state spatial scale, this study identified a significant positive association between the total mass of fumigants and pediatric cancer incidence, and also between the mass of one fumigant in particular, metam, and total cancer incidence (P-value < 0.05). At the county scale, the relationship of all cancer incidence to pesticide usage was evaluated using a multilevel model including pesticide mass and pesticide mass tertiles. Low pediatric cancer rates in many counties precluded this type of evaluation in association with pesticide usage. At the county scale, the multilevel model using fumigant mass, fumigant mass tertiles, county, and state predicted the total cancer incidence (R-squared = 0.95, NSE = 0.91, and Sum of square of residuals [SSR] = 8.22). Moreover, this study identified significant associations between total fumigant mass, high and medium tertiles of fumigant mass, total pesticide mass, and high tertiles of pesticide mass relative to total cancer incidence across counties. Fumigant application rate was shown to be important relative to the incidence of total cancer and pediatric cancer, at both state and county scales.

Soil fumigation continues to play an important role in soil disinfection, but tools to significantly reduce emissions while providing environmental benefits (e.g., biochar) are lacking. The objective of this study was to determine the effects of biochar products on fumigant 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D) and chloropicrin (CP) emissions, their distribution and persistence in soil, nematode control, and potential toxicity to plants in a field trial. Treatments included three biochar products [two derived from almond shells (ASB) at either 550 or 900 °C pyrolysis temperature and one from coconut shells (CSB) at 550 °C] at 30 and 60 t ha-1, a surface covering with a low permeability film (TIF), and no surface covering (control). A mixture of 1,3-D (∼65%) and CP (∼35%) was injected to ∼60 cm soil depth at a combined rate of 640 kg ha-1. All biochar treatments significantly reduced emissions by 38-100% compared to the control. The ASB (900 °C) at both rates reduced emissions as effectively as the TIF (by 99-100%). Both fumigant emission reduction and residue in surface soil were positively correlated with biochar's adsorption capacity while cucumber germination rate and dry biomass were negatively correlated with residual fumigant concentrations in surface soil. This research demonstrated the potential and benefits of using biochar produced from local orchard feedstocks to control fumigant emissions. Additional research is needed to maximize the benefits of biochar on fumigant emission reductions without impacting plant growth.

The environmental impact of methyl bromide (MB) has resulted in its phase out as an insecticidal fumigant except for critical use exempted categories. Consequently, there is an urgent need to develop an environmentally sustainable MB alternative fumigant. trans-Cinnamaldehyde (TC), benzaldehyde, allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), hexanal, and ethyl formate (EF) are naturally occurring plant volatiles with insecticidal properties. This study assessed the toxicity of these plant volatiles to adult and egg stages of the spotted-wing drosophila (SWD) (Drosophila suzukii Matsumura). The plant volatile treatments had a significant effect on adult SWD mortality. The descending order of toxicity to adult SWD was benzaldehyde > AITC > TC > hexanal > EF at a headspace concentration of 0.50 µL/L air for 24 h. All the volatiles, at a concentration of 4.00 µL/L air, significantly inhibited larval emergence from SWD eggs in artificial diet compared to the control. At a 0.50 µL/L air level, among the volatiles tested, only AITC exhibited 100% inhibition against larval emergence from SWD eggs in blueberry fruits after 24 h exposure. In summary, this study shows that all volatiles tested elicited varying degrees of toxicity toward SWD adults and eggs. However, AITC was the most efficacious volatile and the one with the greatest promise as a post-harvest fumigant for both adult and egg stages of SWD.

BACKGROUND: Asparagus decline syndrome (ADS), one of the most important diseases affecting asparagus crops, causes important yield losses worldwide. Fusarium proliferatum, F. oxysporum and F. redolens are among the main species associated with ADS. To explore their potential inoculum sources and the effectiveness of soil disinfestation practices for ADS management, molecular methods based on a quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) were developed. qPCR-based molecular tools demonstrated advantages in the sensitive and specific detection and quantification of fungal pathogens in comparison with less-accurate and time-consuming traditional culture methods. RESULTS: F. proliferatum, F. oxysporum and F. redolens could be specifically detected and accurately quantified in asparagus plants, soil and irrigation water collected from asparagus fields with ADS symptoms by means of the designed TaqMan qPCR protocols. Furthermore, these molecular tools were successfully applied for evaluation of the efficacy of diverse soil disinfestation treatments. Chemical fumigation with dazomet and biosolarization with pellets of Brassica carinata contributed to a significant reduction in the inoculum densities of the three Fusarium species in treated soils, which was correlated with production increases. CONCLUSIONS: The capability to accurately detect and quantify the main Fusarium species involved in ADS in plants, soil and water samples by means of qPCR will allow identification of high-risk fields that can be avoided or managed to reduce yield losses. Quantification of pathogen densities in the soil may also provide essential insights into the effectiveness of soil disinfestation methods for ADS management. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

The red imported fire ant is one of the world's most devastating invasive species, adversely affecting humans, wildlife, crops, and livestock. To control infestations, chemical pesticides are deployed extensively around the world. However, their extensive use has led to negative effects on the environment and human health. Essential oils, which are safe and ecofriendly, can potentially be used as alternatives to chemical pesticides. In this study, grapefruit essential oils were used as fumigant agents to control red imported fire ants. The crude grapefruit oil (GO1) contained 28 compounds, and the concentrated grapefruit oil (GO2), which was refined from GO1 by vacuum distillation, contained 20 compounds. D-Limonene was the dominant constituent in both GO1 (70.1%) and GO2 (73.96%), and other important constituents included ß-pinene, α-pinene, ß-phellandrene, octanal, d-carvone, α-terpineol, and linalool. Both the essential oils and their individual constituents (α-pinene, α-terpineol, ß-phellandrene, octanal, and d-carvone) showed strong lethal fumigant effects against workers. Workers were more susceptible to GO2 than GO1, and octanal was more toxic to workers as compared with the other four constituents. When antennas of workers were treated with the two oils or the five constituents, their walking and gripping abilities were significantly suppressed, and there was an obvious bending or breaking phenomenon on the sensilla of the antennas. Fumigant activity by grapefruit essential oils and their main compounds were associated with their effects on the walking and gripping behavior of workers, and this confirmed that grapefruit essential oil is a promising, ecofriendly, and safe fumigant for the control of red imported fire ants.

Fumigant toxicity of phytochemical volatiles has been widely reported against stored product insect pests. Such volatiles are considered as natural fumigants and bio-fumigants in post-harvest food protection research. In the present study, persistence and ingestion of diallyl disulfide, citral, eucalyptol, eugenol and menthol were investigated in Sitophilus oryzae adults in comparison with fumigant toxicity and microstructural impact in elytra. The fumigant toxicity bioassay was performed with increasing concentrations of phytochemical volatiles at 25, 125, 250 and 500 µL/L air against S. oryzae adults in 50 mL glass vials. The phytochemical residues were examined from the treated adults by Gas Chromatography coupled with Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID) and their pathological impacts on the elytral surface was observed under Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). After 72 h of fumigation, diallyl disulfide and eucalyptol were identified as potential fumigants with 5.24 and 8.30 µL/L air LC50 values, respectively. GC-FID analyses showed that diallyl disulfide and eucalyptol molecules persistence (1.29 and 2.60 ppb persistence with 0.94 and 0.90 r2 values respectively at 72 h exposure) on the body surface of weevil was positively correlated with the fumigation exposure and toxicity. Whereas, phytochemical molecules ingestion into the body of weevils was not directly linked with the insect mortalities. The SEM observations indicated that diallyl disulfide and eucalyptol molecules caused severe microstructural impacts on the elytra of weevils compared to other molecules. As a result, the present study suggested that phytochemical fumigants are persisted on the body surface and caused insecticidal toxicities in S. oryzae adults. In addition, it was predicted that persisted molecules might be entered into the body of weevils via cuticular penetration.

The rusty grain beetle, Cryptolestes ferrugineus, a major pest of stored commodities, has developed very high levels (>1000×) of resistance to the fumigant phosphine. Resistance in this species is remarkably stronger than reported in any other stored product pests demanding the need to understand the molecular basis of this trait. Previous genetic studies in other grain insect pests identified specific variants in two major genes, rph1 and rph2 in conferring the strong resistance trait. However, in C. ferrugineus, although the gene, rph1 was identified as cytochrome-b5-fatty acid desaturase, the rph2 gene has not been reported so far. We tested the candidate gene for rph2, dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase (dld) using the recently published transcriptome of C. ferrugineus and identified three variants, L73N and A355G + D360H, a haplotype, conferring resistance in this species. Our sequence analysis in resistant strain and phosphine selected resistant survivors indicates that these variants occur either alone as a homozygote or a mixture of heterozygotes (i.e complex heterozygotes) both conferring strong resistance. We also found that one of the three variants, possibly L73N expressing "dominant" trait at low frequency in resistant insects. Comparison of dld sequences between Australian and Chinese resistant strain of this species confirmed that the identified variants are highly conserved. Our fitness analysis indicated that resistant insects may not incur significant biological costs in the absence of phosphine selection for 19 generations. Thus, we propose that the observed high levels of resistance in C. ferrugineus could be primarily due to the characteristics of three unique variants, L73N and A355G + D360H within dld.

Soil fumigation using 1,3-dichloropropene (1,3-D) and chloropicrin (CP) is an important strategy for agriculture production; however, excessive emissions can cause air pollution and possible human exposure. In this study, solar light-driven CuInS2/ZnS:Al-TiO2 photocatalytic film was prepared through spin-coating on the flexible polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate of 0.1 mm. Using the photocatalytic film, degradation of 1,3-D was inhibited in the Pci-clor 60 formulation of 1,3-D and CP. However, the degradation of CP was accelerated in this formulation, and the half-life was shortened from 0.66 to 0.40 h. Emissions of 1,3-D from soil to the air were reduced by 97.30%, 97.17%, 47.10%, and 7.88%, for treatments of D + Film, D + C + Film, D + PET, and D, respectively. The efficiencies for reducing 1,3-D emission were significantly improved by about 1.1 and 11.3 times using the film, compared with using the PET alone and no film, respectively. Furthermore, fumigation effects on nematodes could still achieve higher than 90%. The findings provided a basis for the practical application of quantum dot films to reduce soil fumigants emissions by photocatalytic degradation.

INTRODUCTION: Aluminum phosphide (AlP) ingestion for self-harm is associated with a high case-fatality rate (CFR) in low- and middle-income countries. A reliable and accurate prognostic scoring tool is required for appropriate triaging, to guide clinical decision-making, and to evaluate the efficacy of therapeutic interventions for the patients with AlP toxicity. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort study in a tertiary care hospital in north India in patients aged 15 years and over with acute AlP poisoning, investigating the parameters associated with CFR, and developing a reliable and simple prediction score. RESULTS: The CFR was 51% in this cohort of 105 patients. Three parameters-pH <7.25, score on Glasgow coma scale (GCS) <13, and systolic blood pressure (SBP) <87 mm Hg were most robust predictors of CFR (odds ratio; 12.614, 18.621, and 17.600, respectively; area under the receiver operating characteristic curve-0.808, 0.796, and 0.776, respectively). Based on these parameters (with 1 point to each), a prognostic score was developed, ranging from 0 to 3 points. A total score of 3 had a 98.2% specificity and a positive predictive value of 96.4%, whereas a score ≤1 had a 100% sensitivity and 100% negative predictive value. CONCLUSION: A scoring system based on low pH (P), low GCS score (G), and impaired or low SBP (I) ("PGI" score) may provide a simplified predictive model for mortality in AlP poisoning. The quantity of soil fumigants has increased globally that has focused attention on their environmental behavior. However, simultaneous analysis of traces of fumigant residues is often unreported because analysis methods are not readily available to measure them at low concentrations. In this study, typical solvent extraction methods were compared with headspace solid-phase microextraction methods. Both methods can be used for simultaneously measuring the concentrations of five commonly used soil fumigants in soil or water. The solvent extraction method showed acceptable recovery (76-103%) and intraday relative standard deviations (0.8-11%) for the five soil fumigants. The headspace solid-phase microextraction method also showed acceptable recovery (72-104%) and precision rates (1.3-17%) for the five soil fumigants. The solvent extraction method was more precise and more suitable for analyzing relatively high fumigant residue levels (0.05-5 µg/g) contained in multiple soil samples. The headspace solid-phase microextraction method, however, had a much lower limits of detection (0.09-2.52 µg/kg or µg/L) than the solvent extraction method (5.8-29.2 µg/kg), making headspace solid-phase microextraction most suitable for trace analysis of these fumigants. The results confirmed that the headspace solid-phase microextraction method was more convenient and sensitive for the determination of fumigants to real soil samples.

ABSTRACT: Essential oils are possible alternatives to the use of synthetic pesticides for control of fungal contamination. Ginger (Zingiber officinale) essential oil (GEO) is known for having antifungal and antiaflatoxigenic properties, but its use as a fumigant in situ has not been studied yet. The aim of this study was to evaluate GEO's effects upon Aspergillus flavus as a fumigant agent in stored maize grains. The main compounds reported in GEO were α-zingiberene (23.85%) and geranial (14.16%), characterized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance. The GEO was used as a fumigant in irradiated maize grains in concentrations ranging from 5 to 50 µg/g and the resulting effects were compared to a synthetic antifungal agent (carbendazim and thiram), an antifungal traditionally used for seed treatment. The antifungal efficacy of GEO against A. flavus has been proven in a dose-dependent manner through in situ (maize grains) test. The GEO inhibited aflatoxin production at concentrations 25 and 50 µg/g and controlled fungal growth. Therefore, GEO can be used as an effective and non-toxic alternative to conventional treatments in stored maize grains for the natural control of A. flavus.


RESUMO: Os óleos essenciais são possíveis alternativas ao uso de praguicidas sintéticos no controle da contaminação por fungos. O óleo essencial de gengibre (Zingiber officinale - OEG) é conhecido por possuir propriedades antifúngicas e antiaflatoxigênicas, mas seu uso como fumigante in situ ainda não foi estudado. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar os efeitos do OEG sobre Aspergillus flavus como agente fumigante em grãos de milho armazenados. Os principais compostos encontrados no OEG foram α-zingibereno (23,85%) e geranial (14,16%), caracterizados por cromatografia gasosa acoplada a espectrometria de massas e ressonância magnética nuclear. O OEG foi utilizado como fumigante em grãos de milho irradiados em concentrações variando de 5 a 50 µg/g e os efeitos resultantes foram comparados a um agente antifúngico sintético (carbendazim e tiram), antifúngico tradicionalmente usado para o tratamento de sementes. A eficácia antifúngica do OEG contra A. flavus foi comprovada de maneira dependente da dose através do teste in situ (grãos de milho). O OEG inibiu a produção de aflatoxina nas concentrações 25 e 50 µg/g e controlou o crescimento de fungos. Portanto, o OEG pode ser usado como uma alternativa eficaz e não tóxica aos tratamentos convencionais em grãos de milho armazenados para o controle natural de A. flavus.

Observations of fumigant and pesticide emissions are needed for multiple public health and environmental protection mandates. The aerodynamic gradient method (ADM) is commonly used to measure fumigant and pesticide emissions. However, the ADM may over estimate emissions compared to other micrometeorological and modeling approaches, which would increase uncertainty over the true flux estimate. Different studies with ADM have also used multiple differing transport functions that relate concentration gradients to emissions. Therefore, we tested different and more recent transport functions to try to correct the anticipated observed higher values with ADM using observations from two sites in California, USA. We evaluated different transport functions against eddy covariance observations and found that using the functions developed by Högström (1996) corrected the ADM values to be in line with other observational methods. For the Fresno experiment, cumulative emission masses from the ADM- Högström functions were within 7% of other approaches while the Pruitt function was >15% higher. Applying the Högström functions to a series of previous fumigation experiments in California saw reductions in the ADM observations of >25% for cumulative mass emissions. The results indicate that the Högström functions should be used for future ADM experiments in the absence of more robust transport factors for local meteorological conditions. The results also illustrate how previous ADM observations could be corrected to reduce uncertainty in flux emissions estimates.

The volatile release of agricultural fumigants from soil to air is a critical concern in terms of human and environmental health. A major control on the release of fumigants from soil to air is their degradation rate within the soil; however, this is a function of human/soil/environmental conditions and their inter-relationships. For the common fumigant chloropicrin (CP), it is known that application rate has a marked effect on degradation rate, with a potential further influence on CP emissions. We conducted batch degradation studies to better understand how CP degradation rate changes in response to application rate (56, 224, 392kgha-1) under gradients of soil temperature (10, 25, and 40°C), soil moisture content (1, 8, and 15%), and organic matter content (1, 2, and 3%). A general trend of degradation rate decreasing with increasing application rate was observed across almost all such gradients, which is likely attributable to decreased microbial numbers and activity (i.e., degradation) at high (toxic) application rates. The effects of these ranges in degradation rate on emissions from soil to air were predicted using an analytical solution model, indicating that between the low and high application rates, total emissions percentage increased markedly (increases ranging from 69 to 99.8 percentage points, depending on prevalent conditions). The work will be useful to state and federal regulators in assessing the likely impact of CP use on air quality and human health.

For diagnosis, Fum Ex 2 questionnaire has been developed by the European Society for Environmental and Occupational Medicine. The aim of this study was to enhance knowledge on health effects of toxic substances in containers and to validate this questionnaire in medical follow-up and diagnosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 2014, 125 French dockers answered the questionnaire in a face-to-face interview. RESULTS: 83.5% declared no exposure to fumigants or pesticides. Most frequently declared symptoms were fatigue and neurological disorders for dockers and respiratory irritation for refrigeration technicians. Only 28 workers wore regularly individual protection equipment. CONCLUSIONS: A "healthy worker" effect could explain low level of symptoms. Fum Ex 2 questionnaire is relevant for diagnosis. Workers in all steps of the logistic transport chain and consumers are exposed to containers' atmosphere.

Reducing fumigant emissions is essential for minimizing the environmental impacts of pre-plant soil fumigation. Low permeability plastic films are effective at reducing emissions but have high initial purchase, installation, and disposal costs. The objective of this study was to evaluate if deep fumigant injection and biochar soil amendments can reduce emissions, improve fumigant distribution in soil, and provide acceptable control of plant parasitic nematodes. A pre-plant soil fumigation trial was conducted in a commercial orchard in the San Joaquin Valley, CA, USA. Treatments included two rates of Telone® C-35 (a mixture of 1,3-dichloropropene and chloropicrin) under totally impermeable film or with no surface seal, two injection depths (45 or 65 cm), and two biochar rates (20 or 40 ton ha-1). Emission rates were generally low due to rain events encountered during the trial, but data clearly showed that the deep injection enhanced fumigant delivery to depths below 60 cm and resulted in significantly lower peak emission compared to the standard injection depth. Biochar applied at 40 ton ha-1 had the lowest emission rates during 1-month monitoring period. Although variability in nematode survival was high, tarped, deep injection, and biochar treatment showed lower survival of nematodes at various depths. Increase in fumigant persistence, especially chloropicrin, was observed in this study, likely due to the high soil moisture and low temperature. All data indicate that biochar amendments can help reduce fumigant emissions without reducing nematode control; however, additional research is needed to optimize treatments, determine the affordability of various biochar materials, and validate results under a range of field conditions.

Detoxification reaction of chloropicrin in the human body with biological thiols was selected for detection of chloropicrin in the air. The consumption of free sulfhydryl group in biological thiols by chloropicrin is colorimetrically detectable with the addition of the Ellman's reagent. In this study, glutathione, N-acetyl-l-cysteine, l-homocysteine, cysteamine, and thioglycolic acid were tested as sensing agents for chloropicrin vapor detection in ppb concentration range. The reactivity of the selected biological thiols was investigated based on both their redox properties and the nucleophilic strength of the sulfhydryl groups. Nylon-6 nanofibrous membrane and an organic solvent were used as a sensor matrix and a vapor sorbent, respectively, to provide solid supports with ultrahigh surface area and enhanced adsorption to chloropicrin vapor. The tunable sensitivity and detection range by using different biological thiols was achieved on the sensors due to the different reactivity of thiols toward chloropicrin.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the relationship between residential proximity to agricultural fumigant use and respiratory symptoms and lung function in 7-year old children. METHODS: Participants were 294 children living in the agricultural Salinas Valley, California and enrolled in the Center for the Health Assessment of Mothers and Children Of Salinas (CHAMACOS) study. We obtained information on respiratory symptoms and asthma medication use from maternal questionnaires and children performed spirometry to determine the forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and forced expiratory flow 25-75% (FEF25-75) at 7-years of age. We estimated agricultural fumigant use within 3, 5 and 8 km of residences during pregnancy and from birth to age 7 using California's Pesticide Use Report data. We evaluated the association between prenatal and postnatal residential proximity to agricultural use of methyl bromide, chloropicrin, metam sodium and 1,3-dichloropropene with respiratory symptoms and use of asthma medication with logistic regression models and continuous lung function measurements with linear regression models adjusted for confounders. RESULTS: There were no significant associations between residential proximity to use of fumigants and respiratory symptoms or use of asthma medication. We did not observe any adverse relationships between residential proximity to fumigant use and lung function measurements. Unexpectedly, we observed suggestive evidence of improved FEV1 and FEF25-75 with higher use of methyl bromide and chloropicrin during the prenatal period. For example, for each 10-fold increase in methyl bromide use during the prenatal development period we observed higher FEV1 (ß = 0.06 L/s; 95% CI: 0.00, 0.12) and higher FEF25-75 (ß = 0.15 L/s; 95% CI: 0.03, 0.27). Maternal report of child allergies (runny nose without a cold during the previous year) modified the relationship between FEV1 and prenatal proximity to methyl bromide use (p = .07) and we only observed higher FEV1 among children without allergies (ß = 0.08 L/s; 95% CI: 0.02, 0.14 for a 10-fold increase in methyl bromide use during the prenatal period). CONCLUSIONS: Residential proximity to agricultural fumigant use during pregnancy and childhood did not adversely affect respiratory health in the children through 7 years of age. These findings should be explored in larger studies.

In maritime transport, to assess the risks of insect pests spreading, fumigation is recommended by the Food and Agriculture Organisation. Fumigant mostly used for foodstuffs is the phosphine gas generated by the reaction of aluminium phosphide and moisture in the atmosphere. In this article, we first discuss phosphine toxicity to humans and then we describe three cases of occupational exposure in maritime transport of cereals. We found phosphine level higher than 20 ppm in tank atmosphere of bulk carriers and levels from 2 to 3.5 ppm in port silos and port warehouses where cereals were unloaded. Two weeks later, atmospheric measurements in a silo were still at 0.8 ppm. In this case, 3 workers described symptoms which could be linked with phosphine. Exposures to phosphine and cases in maritime transport are surely underestimated. Exposure could occur at sea, in harbour but also in port warehouses, trucks and silos or warehouses along logistic chain. All workers in the chain could be exposed. We can recommend research aiming at the development of alternative techniques using a less harmful gas for humans. At individual level, we propose that, along with the training for employees, workers potentially exposed should wear a test strip (phosphine detector strips) or a personal gas badge with appropriate maintenance.
