CONTEXT: Pain and symptoms of patellofemoral pain (PFP) are often exacerbated during daily activities, which may result in reduced overall physical activity levels. OBJECTIVE: To summarize the evidence for physical activity levels among persons with PFP compared with pain-free controls. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Embase, CINHAL, Cochrane Library, and SPORTDiscus were searched from January 1, 2000 to February 22, 2024. STUDY SELECTION: Peer-reviewed studies published in English that measured physical activity subjectively or objectively in persons with PFP and pain-free controls. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review with meta-analysis. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 1. DATA EXTRACTION: Standardized mean difference (SMD) with 95% CI are reported based on Hedges' g effect sizes. RESULTS: From 23,745 records, 41 studies met the eligibility criteria. There was high-to-moderate-certainty evidence that persons with PFP reported higher physical activity levels compared with pain-free controls using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (SMD, 0.27; 95% CI 0.03, 0.51), whereas lower physical activity levels compared with pain-free controls using the Tegner Activity Scale (SMD, -0.31; 95% CI -0.57, -0.04). There was low-to-moderate-certainty evidence that there was no group difference in physical activity levels using the Baecke Physical Activity Questionnaire (SMD, 0.17; 95% CI -0.09, 0.44) or self-reported sports participation duration (SMD, -0.46; 95% CI -0.98, 0.05). There was high-certainty evidence that runners with PFP reported shorter running distances compared with pain-free runners (SMD, -0.36, 95% CI -0.57, -0.14). No data pooling was possible for objectively measured physical activity levels due to device heterogeneity (ie, different algorithms used to quantify the intensity of physical activity). CONCLUSION: Self-reported physical activity levels among persons with PFP were inconsistent depending on the physical activity measurement tool used or which specific physical activity was measured. Clinicians should integrate multiple physical activity assessment tools to determine the extent to which PFP influences physical activity levels. TRIAL REGISTRATION: PROSPERO #CRD42022314598.

The relationship between sedentary lifestyle and chronic diseases is well known. This study examined the prevalence and factors associated with reduced physical activity (PA) among internal medicine inpatients on admission. In this single-center, cross-sectional study, inpatients aged 50 years or older were prospectively enrolled at a tertiary care facility in Ankara, Türkiye. PA was assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Care and performance indicators, quality of life (EQ-5D 3L), nutritional status, timed up-and-go test, muscle strength, and cognitive status were assessed. Participants were classified into 3 groups of PA levels as low, moderate, and high. Study end points were the prevalence of low PA level and associated factors. Of the 240 participants (mean age: 62.7 ± 8.0 years; women: 50%), 47.1% (n = 113), 40.8% (n = 98) and 12.1% (n = 29) had low, moderate, and high PA, respectively. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (45.1%), hypertension (66.4%), coronary artery disease (41.6%), dementia (8.8%), and multimorbidity (53.1%) were more common in the low PA group. Outdoor walking < 3 days per week (OR: 4.44, 95% CI 1.55 to 12.74, p = 0.006, functional dependence in and outside home (OR: 4.25, 95% CI 1.13 to 15.92, p = 0.032) and EQ-5D VAS score (OR: 0.97, 95% CI 0.95 to 0.99, p = 0.011) were independently associated with low PA level on multivariable logistic regression analysis. This study found low or medium levels of PA in almost nine out of ten admissions to an internal medicine clinic. On the other hand, low PA level was not associated with most classical comorbidities but with altered performance and care indicators.

Background: Although nutritional status is influenced by multidimensional aspects encompassing physical factors, there is limited research on this complex relationship. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the interaction between physical activity level indicators and the nutritional status of adults in Türkiye. Methods: A total of 3,970 individuals aged 18 years or older, residing in Afyonkarahisar (Türkiye), participated in this study. Data were obtained through face-to-face interviews with a questionnaire, using simple random sampling among adults. One-day food consumption was recorded using a 24-h dietary recall (24HDR). Physical activity levels were assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Results: This study comprised 3,970 participants: 2,087 (52.57%) men and 1,883 (47.42%) women. Among them, 32.64% smoked cigarettes, and 8.72% consumed alcohol. About 40% of adults were overweight, and 16.33% were obese. All participants had inadequate intake levels of potassium, calcium, and iron when compared to the recommended amounts. Physical activity levels showed a weak positive correlation with dietary energy, carbohydrates, protein, fat, and cholesterol, and a weak negative correlation with age, waist-to-hip ratio, and BMI of participants. Conclusion: This study provides insights into the importance of addressing both physical activity and nutritional status. It was found that the weekly duration of physical activity for women was lower than for men. As a result of the nutritional status evaluation, it was found that the daily energy intake of men was higher than that of women.

Self-reported physical activity questionnaires (e.g., International Physical Activity Questionnaire, IPAQ) are a cost-effective, time-saving, and accessible method to assess sedentary behaviour and physical activity. There are conflicting findings regarding the validity of self-reported questionnaires in comparison to accelerometer-measured data in a free-living environment. This study aimed to investigate the concurrent validity between self-reported Arabic-English IPAQ short form (IPAQ-SF) and Fibion (Fibion Inc., Jyväskylä, Finland) accelerometer-measured sedentary and physical activity time among young adults. One hundred and one young healthy adults (mean age 20.8 ± 2.4 years) filled in the IPAQ short form (IPAQ-SF) and wore the Fibion device on the anterior thigh for ≥ 600 min per day for 4-7 days. Concurrent validity between the IPAQ-SF and Fibion accelerometer for sitting, walking, moderate activity, and vigorous activity time was assessed using the Spearman correlation coefficient ( ρ ) and Bland-Altman plots. Significant weak associations between IPAQ-SF and Fibion measurements were found for total activity time ( ρ = 0.4; P < 0.001) and for the duration of walking ( ρ = 0.3; P = 0.01), moderate ( ρ = 0.2; P = 0.02), and vigorous-intensity activities ( ρ = 0.4; P < 0.001). However, ρ was not significant ( ρ = - 0.2; P = 0.09) for sitting time. In addition, all the plots of the measured variables showed a proportional bias. A low association and agreement were found between self-reported IPAQ-SF scores and Fibion accelerometer measurements among young adults in the UAE. Adult sedentary and physical activity measurements should be obtained objectively with accelerometers rather than being limited to self-reported measures.

Even in healthy populations, conditioned pain modulation (CPM) magnitude varies. This may be accounted for by (non-)modifiable factors, including physical activity (PA). Yet, little research has thoroughly examined PA and its relation with CPM magnitude in a representative sample. Therefore, the present study investigated the predictive effect of PA on CPM magnitude in 105 healthy adults. PA was assessed during 7 consecutive days by self-report using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire and by monitor-based accelerometry. CPM was examined using a heterotopic noxious-conditioning stimulation protocol during which the effect of a hot water-conditioning stimulus on pressure pain thresholds was evaluated. Comparative, correlation, and hierarchical linear regression analyses were performed. Report-based walking predicts 4.8% of variance in pain-modulatory capacity, moderate PA predicts 10.2% of variance in pain-modulatory capacity, and report-based time spent on total PA predicts 7.0% of variance in pain-modulatory capacity. More metabolic equivalent-minutes/week spent on total PA, including walking and moderate PA, is associated with greater pain-modulatory capacity. The findings of this study add to the limited evidence on the predictive effect of PA on CPM. It urges to consider PA a confounding factor when examining CPM. The current study provides evidence that a physically active lifestyle benefits endogenous pain modulation in healthy adults. Given its potential, walking and moderate-intensity PA might be achievable treatment strategies for pain patients known to have impaired CPM. PERSPECTIVE: The results of this article show that a physically active lifestyle, including larger amounts of walking and moderate activity, predicts greater pain-modulatory capacity. BACKGROUND: High-calorie-expenditure training is common among endurance athletes and is an effective strategy for weight loss. Although many training protocols include walking, running, cycling, and swimming according to a target heart rate, there is limited research on high-calorie-expenditure interventions with multimodal training programs using quantitative methods. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this research protocol are to (1) develop a high-calorie-expenditure training program to cover target calorie expenditure according to the trainability of women classified as overweight (according to a BMI of 25-29.9 kg/m2); (2) determine the effect of high-calorie-expenditure workouts on conditioning, glycemic variables, and body composition; and (3) evaluate the implementation of the intervention and results in comparison with outcomes obtained under a standard-calorie-expenditure training program. METHODS: This is a randomized controlled trial with a pretest-posttest design. Participants include 33 women with a BMI in the overweight range (25-29.9) allocated to three groups: two intervention groups and one control group. The intervention will be conducted for 12 weeks. Participants in the first group will be assigned an exercise program with high energy expenditure of approximately 3000-3500 kilocalories/week in the form of 5 sessions per week with an intensity of 50%-75% maximum oxygen rate (VO2 max) and 60%-80% target heart rate. The second group will be assigned an exercise program with a standard energy expenditure of approximately 1200-1500 kilocalories/week with 3 sessions per week at an intensity of 60%-75% VO2 max, according to The American College of Sports Medicine guideline. The effects of the multimodal training program with daily tasks will be compared to those of the standard-calorie-expenditure and control (no exercise) conditions with respect to changes in glycemic indices and body composition. Daily calories will be calculated through the International Physical Activity Questionnaire and using Nutrition 4 software. RESULTS: Preliminary results show significant weight loss in both the high- and standard-calorie-expenditure groups (P=.003). Significant improvements were also found in muscle percentage (P=.05) and BMI (P=.05) for the high-calorie-expenditure group. Analyses are ongoing for glycemic indices, inflammation factors, and blood parameters. CONCLUSIONS: High-calorie-expenditure training can cause further weight loss than standard exercise, which can eventually lead to greater fat mass reduction and improvement in glycemic indices. These results demonstrate that, in some cases, it may be necessary to increase the activity of women and use multimodal exercise programs with increased volume and intensity to increase the expenditure of exercise and daily activity. We found a net effect of exercise and daily activity at the individual level, whereas the daily lifestyle and physical behaviors of the participants remained constant. Introduction: In general, undergraduate university students in the north of Jordan have a low level of physical activity. Objectives: To examine the physical activity level, perceived barriers and benefits to physical activity, and the contributing factors among university students in north of Jordan. Methods: A cross-sectional study design was used, and data was collected from 235 university students through a self-reported questionnaire. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was utilized to calculate the amount of physical activity, while the exercise benefits and barriers scale (EBBS) was used to measure the perceived benefits and barriers of physical activity. Results: According to the findings, less than half of the students (48.1%) reported engaging in physical activity. Several factors were found to be significantly related to higher levels of physical activity, including being younger, single, having a normal body weight, and reporting excellent health status. Logistic regression analysis revealed that overweight (OR = -0.068, 95% CI 0.025-0.183) and obese (OR = -0.250, 95% CI 0.068-0.924) were less likely to be physically active, while those who rated their health as excellent had higher rates of physical activity (OR = 3.590, 95% CI 1.263-10.201). The students agreed most strongly with the perceived benefit item "Exercise improves the way my body looks," while the perceived barrier item they identified most strongly with was "There are too few places for me to exercise." Conclusion: This study provides important data for health promotion programs aimed at supporting physical activity among university students.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with limited physical activity (PA) of most of the world's population. This cross-sectional prospective study aimed to assess the levels of PA of university students in Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia after COVID-19 using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form (IPAQ-SF). METHODS: A total of 2635 students completed questionnaires regarding their PA levels using the IPAQ-SF between September and December 2022. RESULTS: PA measured by metabolic equivalent of task (MET) scores, varied between the three countries: Slovakia median MET-minutes/week score 4459.9; Czech Republic 3838.8 Poland 3567.1. The results of the post hoc analysis revealed there were significant differences in MET-minutes/week values between the Czech Republic and Poland (p < 0.035) as well as between the Czech Republic and Slovakia (p < 0.037). The analysis of energetic expenditure during walking revealed that students from the Czech Republic and Slovakia had higher median MET-min/weeks values (Czech 2284.1; Slovak 2467.1) compared to their Polish (1536.1) peers (p < 0.001). Polish cohort presented with significantly higher body mass index (BMI) (p < 0.001) than Czech and Slovak groups (BMI Czech: 22.3; Slovak 22.8; Polish 23.8). CONCLUSIONS: Significant differences in PA levels between the Czech Republic, Poland, and Slovakia university students were identified. Slovakia showed the highest median PA measured as a MET score, and Poland showed the lowest. Compared to available pre-COVID studies it seems the total level of PA in the observed cohorts has not returned to the pre-COVID levels and students remain less active.

BACKGROUND: The place regular physical activity (PA) should occupy in managing patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) is unclear. AIM: To assess PA levels and barriers in a southern Italian IBD population. METHODS: IBD patients with non-severe disease activity [assessed with partial Mayo score for ulcerative colitis (UC) and Harvey-Bradshaw index for Crohn's disease] were approached to receive an anonymous online questionnaire to assess PA levels using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and to assess disease activity as patient-reported outcomes 2 (PRO-2) and finally to assess habits, beliefs and barriers in conducting regular PA. Clinical, anthropometric and demographic data of patients were also collected. PA was expressed as continuous units of resting metabolic rate (Met) in min/wk. Three PA groups were identified: Inactive (< 700 Met min/wk), sufficiently active (700-2500 Met min/wk) and health enhancing PA (HEPA) (i.e., HEPA active, > 2500 Met min/wk) patients. RESULTS: Included patients (219) showed overall PA levels of 834.5 Met min/wk, with a large proportion (94, 42.9%) classified as inactive while only a minority (9, 4.1%) as health-enhancing PA. Patients without dyslipidaemia (P < 0.0001) or on biologics therapy (P = 0.022) showed better IPAQ scores in moderate activities. UC PRO-2 correlated negatively with IPAQ intense activities scores (τ = -0.156, P = 0.038). PRO-2 did not show notable sensitivity/specificity in predicting IPAQ inactivity (AUC < 0.6). IBD activity did not differ between active and inactive patients (P > 0.05). Active patients expressed the need to discuss PA with their gastroenterologist. Some barriers (e.g., diagnosis of IBD and fear of flare-ups after PA) are significantly more reported by inactive patients. CONCLUSION: A significant rate of physical inactivity was recorded in this setting. IPAQ showed good feasibility. PA should be an element of discussion in IBD visits assessed quickly with non-invasive questionnaires.

BACKGROUND: The investigation of physical literacy (PL) and physical activity (PA) should be done in an ecological context because the socio-cultural situation can encourage or inhibit children's activity. The present study aimed to study the role of the cultural environment in the development of PL and PA in Iranian children. METHODS: The statistical population consisted of Iranian children aged 8 to 12, of whom 270 students were recruited by cluster sampling from six provinces. They complete the Canadian Assessment of Physical Literacy 2 (CAPL-2) and the International Physical Activity Survey. To examine the cultural environment, the components of geographic location (west, south, central, east, and northwest), place of residence (downtown, suburban, and village), and gender (boys and girls) were used. A multivariate ANOVA analysis was used to analyze the data. RESULTS: From the geographic location, the findings showed that students inhabit in the west and east of Iran have significantly higher scores than their counterparts living in the central, south, and northwest at PA and PL (P < 0.001). From the place of residence, we observed a higher level of PA and PL in children living in the village than in those living in the suburbs and downtown (P < 0.001). In terms of gender, boys have higher PL and PA scores (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The findings demonstrate that socio-cultural factors, geographic location, place of residence, and gender have different impacts on children's PL and physical activity. Therefore, we suggest using ecologically appropriate decentralized planning in a physical education curriculum.

Background: IPAQ-LF is a widely used tool for subjective assessment of physical activity. It has been translated, cross-culturally adapted into many languages and tested in many countries around the world. However, no Hindi version of the long-form of this questionnaire exists till date. Objective: To cross-culturally adapt the IPAQ-LF from English to Hindi language and to evaluate its reliability and validity. Methods: The guidelines by IPAQ Committee were followed for cross-cultural adaptation process. The Test-retest reliability was assessed on 60 participants by administering Hindi IPAQ-LF twice within two-week time frame. The construct validity was assessed by comparing with seven-day pedometer recording. Results: Excellent reliability was observed between total physical activity scores on repeated Hindi IPAQ-LF administrations, with interclass correlation coefficient of 0.963 at 95% confidence interval. The ICC for job, transport, Housework and Leisure domain was calculated to be 0.923, 0.839, 0.862 and 0.939, respectively, suggesting excellent reliability. The Cronbach's alpha computed (0.82) suggests good internal consistency. The Hindi Version of IPAQ-LF also demonstrated good construct validity with Spearman correlation coefficient of 0.783. Bland-Altman analyses were performed to evaluate the level of agreement between two constructs. Conclusion: The study demonstrates that Hindi version of IPAQ-LF is a reliable and valid tool for assessing physical activity levels for Hindi speaking population.

Introduction: Obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) have immediate and long-term consequences on adolescent health and well-being. Among the available treatments for MetS in adolescents, behavioral interventions such as increasing physical activity (PA) are preferred. This study aimed to investigate the association of PA and sitting time with MetS and a complete set of metabolic health parameters. Methods: Data from the Pediatric Brazilian Metabolic Syndrome Study (BRAMS-P), a cross-sectional multicenter study conducted using a convenience sample of 448 Brazilian adolescents (10y-19y), were used. Sociodemographic and lifestyle information were collected using a standardized questionnaire. Daily PA and sitting time were estimated from the International PA Questionnaire. Anthropometric parameters, body composition, and blood pressure were measured by trained researchers. Blood lipids, uric acid, hepatic enzymes, creatinine, glycated hemoglobin, glucose, and insulin were measured in fasting blood samples, and the Homeostasis Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance was calculated. A subsample of 57 adolescents underwent the hyperglycemic clamp protocol. Results: The odds for metabolic syndrome were higher among adolescents who spent >8h sitting (OR (95%CI)=2.11 (1.02 - 4.38)), but not in those classified as active (OR (95%CI)=0.98 (0.42 - 2.26)). Adolescents who spent more time sitting had higher BMI, waist circumference, sagittal abdominal diameter, neck circumference, percentage of body fat, and worse blood lipid profile. The insulin sensitivity index was moderately and positively correlated with moderate-to-high PA in minutes per day (rho=0.29; p=0.047). Conclusion: Time spent sitting was associated with worse metabolic parameters and must be restricted in favor of adolescent health. Regular PA is associated with improved insulin sensitivity and may be encouraged not only in adolescents with obesity or metabolic disorders but also to prevent adverse metabolic outcomes in normal-weight adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: Hypertension is closely associated with an inactive lifestyle. Physical activity and/or exercise have been shown to delay the development of hypertension. This study aimed to assess the level of physical activity and sedentary time, and its determinants among Moroccan Hypertensive patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted between March and July 2019 including 680 hypertensive patients. We administered international physical activity questionnaire in face-to-face interview to assess the level of physical activity and sedentary time. RESULTS: The results showed that only 43.4% of participants met recommended physical activity levels (≥ 600 MET min/week). Adherence to physical activity recommendations was observed more in male participants (p = 0.035), in participants aged less than 40 years (p = 0.040) and those aged between 41 and 50 years (p = 0.047). The average sedentary time was 37.19 ± 18.92 hours per week. This time was significantly longer in people aged 51 and over, in married, divorced, and widowed people, and in those with low levels of physical activity. CONCLUSIONS: The level of physical inactivity and the sedentary time was high. In addition, participants with a high-level sedentary lifestyle had a low level of physical activity. Educational actions should be undertaken among this group of participants to prevent the risks associated with inactivity and sedentary behavior.

This study aims to investigate the temporal links between physical activity, sleep and affective wellbeing in young adults. In particular, the aim was to examine whether physical activity is associated with sleep indicators in subsequent nights and, in turn, whether sleep was associated with improved affective wellbeing the next morning. Relatedly, moderation by baseline levels of depressive symptoms, sleep quality, habitual physical activity and gender was analysed. One-hundred and forty-seven individuals (85.7% female) aged 18-25 years old participated in an experience sampling study over 14 consecutive days. Participants received seven prompts per day, and answered questions about their physical activity and affective states. Every morning, participants also reported their sleep. Physical activity throughout the day was not related to sleep during the following night or to affective wellbeing the next morning. An exception to that pattern was that physical activity before 14:00 hours was associated with longer subsequent sleep duration. Better subjective sleep quality predicted affective wellbeing the next morning. Associations of physical activity, sleep and affective wellbeing were not moderated by baseline depressive symptoms, sleep quality or habitual physical activity. However, investigation of gender as a moderator revealed that moderate physical activity was associated with better subsequent sleep quality for males, but not for females. Overall, we found that physical activity is associated with better subsequent sleep for males, but not for females. Also, our study provides further evidence that better sleep quality is associated with the next morning's affective wellbeing.

Background/objective: Burnout is a condition in which a person feels physically fatigued and mentally drained. It occurs after a long period of work-related stress and may lead to mental disorders, such as depression and anxiety. Therefore, healthcare providers especially require early intervention. Regular physical activity has been reported to benefit individuals with mental illness, suggesting that a relationship between physical activity and burnout might exist. Hence, this study's objective was to analyze the relationship between physical activity and burnout among respiratory therapists and student interns in Jeddah City, Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study with respiratory therapists and interns working in public and private hospitals was conducted from November 2, 2020, to November 27, 2020. Participants responded to an electronic survey consisting of the Maslach Burnout Inventory - Human Services Survey for Medical Personnel, which measures the burnout dimensions of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment. They also completed the International Physical Activity Questionnaire - Long Form and a demographic questionnaire. Results: Among the 250 eligible respiratory therapists and interns, data from the 152 respondents who completed the electronic survey were analyzed. Although no association between physical activity and burnout was found, a significant effect of the novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on physical activity and significant associations of high burnout (emotional exhaustion) with nationality and smoking were found. Conclusion: No association was found between burnout level and physical activity. Confounding factors, such as the COVID-19 pandemic during the study's data collection and analyses, likely contributed to the study's findings.

Decreased physical activity (PA) has been associated with residents living in neighborhoods perceived as being disordered or having high crime levels. What is unknown are the characteristics of individuals who engage in moderate to vigorous levels of PA (MVPA) despite living in these vulnerable neighborhoods, or who may be referred to as positive deviants (PD). We examined the factors associated with PD for PA among Jamaicans. Between 2016 and 2017 the Jamaica Health and Lifestyle Survey, a cross-sectional nationally representative survey (n = 2807), was conducted on individuals aged 15 years and older. Regression analyses were performed to identify associations with PD, defined using engagement in MVPA among persons living in vulnerable neighborhoods (N = 1710). Being female (odds ratio [OR]a = 0.64 (0.48, 0.86); p = 0.003), obese while living in an urban area (ORa = 0.39; 95 % CI = 0.26, 0.59; p < 0.0001), unemployed (ORa = 0.53; 95 % CI = 0.39, 0.73; p < 0.0001), or a student (ORa = 0.62; 95 % CI = 0.39, 0.98); p = 0.041) was associated with a significantly lower likelihood of PD, while having a personal medical history of at least one chronic disease significantly increased likelihood (ORa = 1.43; 95 % CI = 1.08, 1.90; p = 0.014). Taking a PD approach may be one angle to consider in trying to determine what is working and for whom, so that this may be harnessed in policy, prevention and intervention programming to increase PA.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, moderate physical activity has attracted the attention of experts and women as a way to cope with premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Studies investigated the effects of exercise on PMS, but only a few reports focused on the relationship between physical activity, which included not only exercise but also routine bodily movements, and PMS. Therefore, the present study investigated the relationship between the amount of physical activity and PMS symptoms among sexually mature female students. METHODS: A total of 381 female university students in Japan were surveyed using a paper or web-based questionnaire with the same content. The questionnaire consisted of basic information, PMS symptoms, and physical activity based on the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Participants were divided into two groups (≥ 3000 The Metabolic Equivalent of Task (MET)-minutes/week and < 3000 MET-minutes/week) based on their total physical activity as calculated using the IPAQ guidelines. The two groups were then compared in terms of the severity of their PMS physical and psychological symptoms as calculated based on the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists' PMS diagnostic criteria. The Wilcoxon's rank-sum test was used for statistical analyses. We then divided the participants based on the presence or absence of each symptom and used the chi-square test to compare the intergroup differences in ratios. The statistical significance level was set at p < 0.05. RESULTS: Those with total physical activity of ≥ 3000 MET-minutes/week had lower total PMS symptom scores (p < 0.01), physical symptom scores (p = 0.01), and psychological symptom scores (p = 0.01) compared with those with total physical activity of < 3000 MET-minutes/week. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that young women with high physical activity (≥ 3000 MET-minutes/week) have milder symptoms of PMS.

Background: Despite well-established efficacy for patients with a cardiovascular diagnosis or event, exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation program participation and completion has remained alarmingly low due to both system-level barriers and patient-level factors. Patient mental health, particularly depression, is now recognized as significantly associated with reduced enrollment, participation, attendance, and completion of a cardiac rehabilitation program. More recently, anxiety sensitivity has emerged as an independent construct, related to but distinct from both depression and anxiety. Anxiety sensitivity has been reported to be adversely associated with participation in exercise and, thus, may be important for patients in cardiac rehabilitation. Accordingly, the objective of this study was to conduct a scoping review to summarize the evidence for associations between anxiety sensitivity and cardiovascular disease risk factors, exercise, and clinical outcomes in cardiac rehabilitation. Methods: A formal scoping review, following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, was undertaken. Searches of MEDLINE, Web of Science, CINAHL, PSYCINFO, and Scopus databases were conducted, supplemented by hand searches; studies published through December of 2020 were included. The initial screening was based on titles and abstracts and the second stage of screening was based on full text examination. Results: The final search results included 28 studies. Studies reported statistically significant associations between anxiety sensitivity and exercise, cardiovascular disease, and participation in cardiac rehabilitation. Many studies, however, were conducted in non-clinical, community-based populations; there were few studies conducted in cardiovascular disease and cardiac rehabilitation clinical patient populations. Additionally, significant gaps remain in our understanding of the sex-based differences in the complex relationships between anxiety sensitivity, exercise and cardiac rehabilitation. Conclusion: More research is needed to understand specific associations between anxiety sensitivity and clinical outcomes among clinical cardiovascular disease patients and participants in cardiac rehabilitation programs. Treatment of anxiety sensitivity to optimize clinical outcomes in cardiac rehabilitation programs should be investigated in future studies.

PURPOSE: To examine how physical activity (PA) and sitting time (ST) are associated with mortality in older Japanese adults. METHODOLOGY: We used the data of 10 233 older Japanese adults aged ≥65 years who provided valid responses to the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ-SF) by a mail survey. Both PA and ST were assessed using the IPAQ-SF. The results were classified into high or low categories using ≥3.0 metabolic equivalent PA (150 min/week) and ST (300 min/day) into the following four groups: High PA (HPA)/Low ST (LST), HPA/High ST (HST), Low PA (LPA)/LST, and LPA/HST. Mortality data were collected from July 30, 2011, to November 30, 2016. We assessed the interaction of PA and ST status with the risk of all-cause mortality using the multivariable Cox proportional-hazards model. RESULTS: A total of 1014 people were recorded to have died during a median follow-up period of 5.3 years (51 553 person-years). After adjustment for confounders, the risk of mortality was higher in the LPA/HST group than in all other groups (HPA/LST: reference; HPA/HST group: hazard ratio [HR] 0.86 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.66 to 1.12); LPA/LST group: HR 1.09 (95% CI: 0.88 to 1.35); LPA/HST group: HR 1.36 (95% CI: 1.10 to 1.67); and multiplicative interaction: HR 1.44 (95% CI: 1.07 to 1.94)). CONCLUSIONS: The risk of mortality associated with LPA/HST depends on the level of PA, duration of ST, and their interaction with each other. Our results may be useful in ameliorating the adverse effects leading to mortality in individuals with lower PA, by reducing ST.

After the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, many office workers transitioned to working-from-home (WFH) which altered routine physical activity (PA). To understand how these workers' PA were affected throughout the pandemic, PA data collected in January, April, June, and December 2020 with an activity tracker and a validated survey were analyzed. Between January and December, it was found that step counts during the weekday decreased (p < 0.01), weekday heart rate was higher than weekends (p < 0.01), activity-tracker and self-reported PA decreased (p < 0.01), and sitting time increased (p < 0.01). To understand the agreement between the objective and subjective METs, Bland-Altman analyses were completed and demonstrated an acceptable level of agreement. Findings show decreased level of PA amongst WFH office workers and that the activity tracker and survey are reliable methods of recording WFH PA.
