RESUMO

Geopolitical risks (GPR) arising from wars, terrorist acts and bilateral tensions. It has aroused global attention recently, especially as the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak has further disrupted normal bilateral trade exchanges. However, this argument is still too general to capture the micro impact of geopolitical risks on internationalization in developing countries. This study examines the impact of GPR on firms' internationalization performance in China. Using Chinese A-share manufacturing listed firms from 2008 to 2019, this study investigates the relationship between GPR and firms' internationalization performance. The main findings are presented as follows. First, GPR has a significantly negative effect on firms' internationalization performance. After I conduct a series of robustness tests, my findings remain valid. Second, GPR have a suppressive effect on firms' internationalization performance mainly through reducing legitimacy and investment freedom. Third, the interaction terms of product diversification, technological diversification and regional diversification with GPR have different statistical significance, and they interact with GPR to affect firms' internationalization performance. In addition, GPR have a more significant inhibitory effect on the firms' internationalization performance in developing countries along the "the Belt and Road" and joint ventures investing. Therefore, this study contributes to a better understanding of GPR and firms' internationalization.

Internationalisation in higher education is essential, and although active learning methodologies are increasing and allow students to develop transversal skills, most still have a very local scope. In this context, the Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) methodology is an interesting approach to benefit the students' development. It consists of an online program that involves creating multicultural teams to develop a specific learning project. Although this methodology is expanding, its use in physiology is still scarce. This paper aims to show an example of applying COIL methodology in physiology topics to enhance higher-education students' innovation and business skills. Our example project developed a sports-assessment service concept focused on physiology and biomechanics assessments. The program involved teams from Brazil, Germany, and Spain, comprising undergraduate and master students. Over seven weeks, these teams, mentored by professors and researchers, engaged in workshops covering COIL methodology, business model design, executive summary planning, economic analyses, and communication techniques. Key outcomes included learning new concepts, developing soft skills, building confidence in innovative solution proposals, and experiencing diverse cultures. Challenges faced were language barriers, scheduling, task complexity, and logistical issues. This experience confirms the effectiveness of incorporating programs using COIL methodology into educational curriculums. Doing so exposes physiology students to innovation, entrepreneurship, and business creation while strengthening their professional connections and opening up post-graduation opportunities.

This study set out to investigate the beliefs of academics regarding the importance of curriculum internationalization in Ethiopian research universities. A convergent-parallel mixed-method design was used to achieve this purpose. Quantitative data was gathered from 415 randomly chosen academics taken from a sample frame of 6808 through a questionnaire. Using a semi-structured interview, 16 purposefully chosen individuals provided qualitative data. The questionnaire's construct, face, content, and pilot test validity were examined. Moreover, triangulation, use of multiple methods, external audits, and low inference descriptors were employed for the qualitative instrument. Descriptive statistics (frequency, percent, mean, and standard deviation) and inferential statics (Chi-square, Cramer's-V test, and one-way ANOVA) were used to examine the quantitative data. Bell's "Spectrum of Acceptance of Internationalizing Curriculum," integrated with Ellingboe's "Great Divide," was used to identify the positions of the academics in their beliefs. The qualitative data was analyzed using descriptive statements and presented thematically based on research questions. Hence, major findings revealed that academics' representations based on their demographic variables were not as expected; their variation was practically not significant among universities; the majority of academics had crossed Ellingboe's "Great Divide"; significant differences among disciplines and/or universities were not observed in this study. Finally, urging academics to actively integrate international perspectives into their curricula, elevating curriculum internationalization of higher education to a national priority, and undertaking extensive national research emerged as key recommendations for the Ethiopian Research Universities, Ethiopian Ministry of Education, and future research endeavors, respectively.

AIM: To extend and form the "Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation in Traditional Chinese Medicine" (GRADE-TCM). METHODS: Methodologies were systematically reviewed and analyzed concerning evidence-based TCM guidelines worldwide. A survey questionnaire was developed based on the literature review and open-end expert interviews. Then, we performed expert consensus, discussion meeting, opinion collection, external examination, and the GRADE-TCM was formed eventually. RESULTS: 265 Chinese and English TCM guidelines were included and analyzed. Five experts completed the open-end interviews. Ten methodological entries were summarized, screened and selected. One round of consensus was conducted, including a total of 22 experts and 220 valid questionnaire entries, concerning 1) selection of the GRADE, 2) GRADE-TCM upgrading criteria, 3) GRADE-TCM evaluation standard, 4) principles of consensus and recommendation, and 5) presentation of the GRADE-TCM and recommendation. Finally, consensus was reached on the above 10 entries, and the results were of high importance (with voting percentages ranging from 50 % to 81.82 % for "very important" rating) and strong reliability (with the Cr ranging from 0.93 to 0.99). Expert discussion meeting (with 40 experts), opinion collection (in two online platforms) and external examination (with 14 third-party experts) were conducted, and the GRADE-TCM was established eventually. CONCLUSION: GRADE-TCM provides a new extended evidence-based evaluation standard for TCM guidelines. In GRADE-TCM, international evidence-based norms, characteristics of TCM intervention, and inheritance of TCM culture were combined organically and followed. This is helpful for localization of the GRADE in TCM and internationalization of TCM guidelines.

RESUMO

Responsible internationalization is a term increasingly used to promote relationship building in a world shaped by the growing impact of global challenges and geopolitical competition. In these changing global conditions, researchers and universities have learned that they need to adhere to an expanded set of research norms. Today these norms include aspects well known to researchers, such as research integrity, academic freedom, openness, research excellence, and research ethics, but also newer aspects related to societal impact, research security, and science diplomacy. However, managing these aspects is complicated by the fact that they are quite contradictory in tandem. Hence the term responsible internationalization has been used to raise awareness of the changing conditions for academic research and induce more responsible research practices. Nonetheless, the term presently lacks systemization and agreed definitions driving clear narratives, well-articulated goals, or structured responses and behavioral changes. This paper seeks to clarify some of the underlying premises and strategies in working with responsible internationalization and a way forward to the development of clearer guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Abroad medical electives are recognized as high-impact practice and considered a necessity to provide global health training. As of recently, the COVID-19 pandemic and its related travel restrictions prohibited most international elective activities. Another important barrier to abroad electives that received comparably little attention is elective and application fees, which - combined - may be as high as $5000 per month, and may prevent students with limited financial resources from applying for an international elective. Elective fees have never been systematically analyzed and trends in teaching and application fees have rarely been subject to dedicated scientific investigations. METHODS: Using data from two large elective reports databases, the authors addressed this gap in the literature. The authors analyzed trends in abroad elective fees within the last 15 years in some of the most popular Anglo-American elective destinations among students from Germany, including the United States of America, Australia, New Zealand, the Republic of South Africa, Ireland and the United Kingdom. RESULTS: The authors identified n = 726 overseas elective reports that were uploaded between 2006 and 2020, of which n = 438 testimonies met the inclusion criteria. The United Kingdom and Australia were the most popular elective destinations (n = 123 and n = 113, respectively), followed by the Republic of South Africa (n = 104) and the United States of America (n = 44). Elective fees differed substantially-depending on the elective destinations and time point. Median elective fees were highest in the United States of America (€ 1875 for a 4-week elective between 2018-2020), followed by the Republic of South Africa (€ 400) and Australia (€ 378). The data also suggests an increasing trend for elective fees, particularly in the United States. CONCLUSIONS: Rising fees warrant consideration and a discussion about the feasibility of reciprocity and the bidirectional flow of students in bidirectional exchange programs.

This paper describes the implementation of tools to support multiple language variants of the clinical information models that are used to define a model-driven EHR system. Beyond that, it describes how a complete EHR system can be created with multiple language variants, using the example of an EHR for clinical management of patients in a Fracture Liaison Service. A clinical information model, represented as ontology, was developed in the English language. This model was translated into Spanish and Mandarin, and the modeling tools were refined, on the basis of the experience gained. A workshop was then held, where participants used the EHR tools to create additional language variants in German, French, Portuguese, Arabic, Farsi, Urdu and Somali. The results from the workshop are presented here, with a brief summary of the lessons learned; further work will focus on improving the tools in response to those lessons.

BACKGROUND: Scientometric analyses characterize the output of research publications using quantitative methods. While it has been reported that the number of publications in anesthesiology has been increasing for years, the global research activity in pediatric anesthesiology and its landscape is largely unknown. AIMS: To examine the activity, developmental dynamics, and collaboration landscape of research publications in pediatric anesthesiology over the past two decades. METHODS: PubMed and WebOfScience were searched for pediatric anesthesiology publications published between 2001 and 2020. The identified publications were exported into a database, matched, curated, and then assigned to one or more countries according to their affiliation field(s). The primary outcome was the publication activity and its growth rate. Secondary outcomes included the geographical distribution, the evolution of international collaborations (as indicated by articles affiliated with more than one country), and the main sources. RESULTS: Thirty-four thousand, three hundred and forty-three pediatric anesthesiology publications were retrieved. The compound annual growth rate over the study period was +7.6%. The highest annual growth rate was +20.6% from 2019 to 2020. Corresponding authors were most often affiliated with USA (32.5%), Germany (5.5%), and China (5.5%). China (+22.9%), Iran (+21.7%), and India (+16.1%) had the highest compound annual growth rates. 6001 (17.5%) articles involved international collaboration, with a compound annual growth rate of +13.1%. The most frequent collaboration was between USA and Canada (716 articles together). The most prominent source was Pediatric Anesthesia (10.0%). CONCLUSIONS: Publication activity in pediatric anesthesiology has increased from 2001 to 2020 and has become more geographically diverse. With the volume of international collaborations even outpacing this growth, it is hoped that this will gradually lead to a larger evidence base in pediatric anesthesia.

AIM: The aim of this study was to describe the experience of Norwegian nursing students with internationalization through participation in a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) course. BACKGROUND: Educators in Norway and the United States collaborated to incorporate internationalization and population health concepts into virtual courses during the pandemic. Literature gaps exist in post-implementation assessment data that ascertain internationalization through the COIL experience. DESIGN: This was a qualitative study with a descriptive design. Data were collected from focus group interviews and analyzed conventional content-analysis approaches. METHODS: Fifteen Norwegian undergraduate nursing students who participated in the COIL opportunity completed focus group interviews. FINDINGS: The themes identified included, "virtual conversation builds collaborations and enhances learning," and "this opened my eyes." CONCLUSIONS: Norwegian students acknowledged they had learned transferable lessons from their global partners that could be applied to patient care of the marginalized population in Norway.

La internacionalización de las universidades cubanas favorece el cumplimiento de la misión de la educación superior, propicia que la universidad sea cada vez más innovadora y contribuye, de esa manera, al logro de los objetivos de desarrollo sostenible propuestos en la Agenda 2030. La internacionalización constituye una gran fuerza para el desarrollo de una universidad moderna fundamentada en esquemas de formación: ante todo humanista, de alto nivel, con gran sensibilidad social, lo que sólo se puede alcanzar con el desarrollo de Instituciones de Educación Superior de mayor trascendencia académica, en el contexto internacional. Con estos fundamentos se realizó una investigación con el objetivo de sistematizar los resultados de una estrategia para la internacionalización de la educación médica superior. Se enmarca en un convenio de colaboración entre instituciones de Cuba y México y la creación de una red académica, que impulsa actividades de investigación y docencia en pre y posgrado. Se trata de una investigación de naturaleza documental. La revisión de textos, en formato impreso y digital, se orientó al análisis de los resultados de la experiencia de Cuba- México, en los ámbitos: intercambio académico, movilidad docente, participación en proyectos científicos colaborativos y formación doctoral, que se materializan en los resultados obtenidos.


The internationalization of Cuban universities favors the fulfillment of the mission of higher education, encourages the university to be increasingly innovative and thus contributes to the achievement of the sustainable development goals proposed in the 2030 Agenda. Internationalization constitutes a great force for the development of a modern university based on training schemes: above all humanistic, high level, with great social sensitivity, which can only be achieved with the development of Higher Education Institutions of greater academic significance, in the international context. With these foundations, an investigation was carried out with the objective of systematizing the results of a strategy for internationalization of higher medical education. It is part of a collaboration agreement between institutions in Cuba and Mexico and the creation of an academic network, which promotes research and teaching activities in undergraduate and postgraduate courses. This is an investigation of a documentary nature, in which the review of texts, in printed and digital format, was oriented to the analysis of the results of the Cuba-Mexico exchange experience, in the areas: academic exchange, teacher mobility , participation in collaborative scientific projects and doctoral training, which materialize in the results obtained. From the critical and contrasted reading, the systematization was carried out.

Higher education is becoming increasingly internationalized, and English as a medium of instruction (EMI) for academic content has become commonplace in countries where English is not a native language. However, concerns are growing that the fast-growing trend of EMI lacks sufficient consideration of the related challenges with regard to implementation and impact. As a complex phenomenon, EMI requires increased awareness of its positive and negative implications for teachers and students. The attitudes and perspectives of teachers and students play a significant role in influencing the promotion and effectiveness of EMI teaching. Nevertheless, internationalization is essential for the advancement of nursing education. Therefore, it is imperative to understand the perspectives and challenges faced by teachers and students with regard to EMI and their readiness to embrace it. Therefore, in this article, we first define EMI and describe the reasons for its introduction and then discuss the challenges that teachers and students involved with EMI face in order to provide a reference for nursing education policymakers and academic institutions tasked with EMI development and implementation.

BACKGROUND: Internationalization-at-home programs are a unique opportunity for those who had been planning to study abroad to learn global clinical practices and cultures at home. However, the factors influencing the motivation of students to join such programs remain unexplored. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship among expectancies for success, subjective task value, and the intention to participate in an internationalization-at-home program, and to identify key factors predicting such an intention among undergraduate nursing students. DESIGN: A descriptive correlational design with a predictive approach was adopted. METHODS: A total of 522 undergraduate and postgraduate nursing students in a Hong Kong university participated in the study. Intention to participate in the program was assessed using the Comprehensive Relative Autonomy Index. Expectancies for success and subjective task value were assessed as potential predictors. A multiple linear regression analysis was adopted to examine the predictive effects. RESULTS: The participants were aged 17-31 years (mean = 20.95, SD = 2.39). Those who reported having previously participated in the program (ß = 0.10, p-value = .014), greater intercultural communication competence (ß = 0.14, p-value = .003), greater perceived social competence (ß = 0.11, p-value = .031), and a higher subjective value of the program (ß = 0.28, p-value<.001) expressed a greater intention to join the program. Collectively, the three variables accounted for 14.7 % of the variances in intention to participate in the program. CONCLUSIONS: Cultural self-efficacy, intercultural communication competence, perceived social competence, individual interest, foreign language learning motivation, and subjective value of the program were found to be key factors predicting the intention of nursing students to participate in internationalization-at-home. Future studies can provide interventions to address these factors and enhance the benefits of internationalization-at-home programs.

Drawing on organizational learning theory and taking an institutional perspective, this study investigates (1) the dynamic relationship between internationalization and innovation in emerging market enterprises (EMEs), and (2) how state ownership moderates the focal relationships. Using a panel dataset of listed Chinese firms from 2007 to 2018, we find that internationalization encourages innovation input in EMEs, which in turn transforms into more innovation output. Higher innovation output leads to further international commitment, creating a dynamic upward spiral of internationalization and innovation. Interestingly, state ownership positively moderates the innovation input-innovation output link but negatively moderates the relationship between innovation output and internationalization. Our paper enriches and refines our understanding of the dynamic relationship between internationalization and innovation in EMEs by integrating the knowledge exploration, transformation, and exploitation perspectives, with the institutional perspective of state ownership.

This study aimed at investigating the interplay between internationalization and digitalization using a social media platform during the early phases of the internationalization process of new ventures from an emerging economy. The research adopted the longitudinal multiple-case study method of investigation. All the firms that were studied had operated on a social media platform (Instagram) since their inception. Data collection was based on two rounds of in-depth interviews and secondary data. The research used thematic analysis, cross-case comparison and pattern-matching logic. The study contributes to the extant literature by (a) proposing a conceptualization of the interplay between digitalization and internationalization during the early phases of the internationalization trajectory of small new ventures from an emerging economy using a social media platform; (b) detailing the role of the diaspora during the outward internationalization of these ventures and outlining the theoretical implications of this phenomenon; and (c) providing a micro perspective on how entrepreneurs exploit platform resources and face platform-related risks during their enterprise's early domestic and international phases. The rapid growth of international student mobility has attracted much research on the many benefits it offers to students, higher education institutions, and societies in general. However, studies on the costs and potential tribulations caused by mobility are comparatively rare, despite increasing evidence of such costs inherent in the marketization of higher education. Furthermore, the few existing studies are predominantly framed in terms of consumerism and the commodification of education, but they give less attention to mobility in the context of wider social issues. The climate crisis is foremost among such social impacts, with the extensive air travel inherent in global mobility patterns causing significant damage, combined with curricula, pedagogies, and institutional strategy that are either ambivalent or contradictory on the climate crisis. This paper examines international student mobility in European higher education to better understand how the environmental costs of higher education can be conceptualized in policy and practice. It contrasts policies and practices that promote international student mobility in Europe-in which mobility has aspects of what are commonly referred to as "public goods"-with initiatives that promote mobility to Europe, which illustrate a historic and ongoing entanglement between European colonialism, higher education, and climate change. It concludes with reflections on possibilities for greater sustainability in international student mobility in Europe.

R E S U M E N El artículo tiene por objetivo el analizar la cooperación internacional, desde el convenio entre la Universidad de Atacama UDA-Chile y la Universidad de Nariño UDENAR-Colombia, las dos instituciones son de educación superior públicas y regionales. El estudio fue cualitativo - descriptivo, los participantes fueron I3 entre docentes, administrativos y estudiantes pertenecientes a las dos universidades. Sus edades fluctúan entre los 21 y 59 años, hombres y mujeres, nacidos en Chile o Colombia. Se utilizó como técnicas de recolección de información el análisis documental y un cuestionario con preguntas abiertas. Los resultados muestran una valoración positiva del convenio puesto que se ha manejado desde las tres funciones sustantivas universitarias: docencia, investigación e interacción social; en este mismo sentido se hace fuerte los aprendizajes adquiridos por cada participante y la necesidad de profundizar en investigación. Se concluye que la internacionalización tiene muchos beneficios desde el intercambio cultural, el prestigio internacional y los aprendizajes, así como la transdisiciplinariedad del convenio, que a través del pensamiento crítico construyendo espacios de diálogo de saberes no fragmentado en disciplinas, sino unido por un interés genuino por el conocimiento.


The article aims to analyze international cooperation, from the agreement between the University of Atacama UDA-Chile and the University of Nariño UDENAR-Colombia, the two institutions are public and regional higher education. The study was qualitative - descriptive, the participants were I3 among teachers, administrators and students belonging to the two universities. Their ages fluctuate between 21 and 59 years, men and women, born in Chile or Colombia. Documentary analysis and a questionnaire with open questions were adapted as data collection techniques. The results show a positive assessment of the agreement since it has been managed from the three substantive university functions: teaching, research and social interaction; In it, the learning acquired by each participant and the need to deepen the investigation become strong. It is concluded that internationalization has many benefits from cultural exchange, international prestige and learning, as well as the transdisciplinarity of the agreement, which through critical thinking, building spaces for dialogue of knowledge not fragmented into disciplines, but united by genuine interest for knowledge.


O artigo tem como objetivo analisar a cooperação internacional, a partir do convênio entre a Universidade de Atacama UDA-Chile e a Universidade de Nariño UDENAR-Colômbia, as duas instituições são públicas e de ensino superior regional. O estudo foi qualitativo - descritivo, os participantes foram I3 entre professores, administradores e alunos pertencentes às duas universidades. Suas idades oscilam entre 2I e 59 anos, homens e mulheres, nascidos no Chile ou na Colômbia. A análise documental e um questionário com questões abertas foram utilizados como técnicas de coleta de dados. Os resultados mostram uma avaliação positiva do convênio, uma vez que tem sido gerido a partir das três funções substantivas da universidade: ensino, pesquisa e interação social; Nesse mesmo sentido, torna-se forte o aprendizado adquirido por cada participante e a necessidade de aprofundar a pesquisa. Conclui-se que a internacionalização traz muitos benefícios pelo intercâmbio cultural, prestígio internacional e aprendizado, bem como a transdisciplinaridade do convênio, que por meio do pensamento crítico, constrói espaços de diálogo de saberes não fragmentados em disciplinas, mas unidos pelo interesse genuíno.

In this research paper, we analyzed the bibliographic data of the research publications issued by the Moroccan Journal of Chemistry between 2013 and 2021. As an open-access country-based research journal with a narrow area of interest and international online exposure, it will be interesting to see how it affects the local chemical research community through the comparison of the characteristics of the research outputs of the journal as retrieved from the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) with the features of Moroccan chemical research from 2014 to 2021 in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoS). In this context, we generated scientometric networks using Gephi, a tool for large-scale data visualization, to reveal the patterns of the publications in the Moroccan Journal of Chemistry. When performing our analysis, we found a significant alignment between the research topics featured in the Moroccan Journal of Chemistry and the main research areas of the Moroccan chemical scholarly outputs, particularly Multidisciplinary Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, and Analytical Chemistry. We also identified that the Moroccan Journal of Chemistry functions as an incubator for establishing new traditions of research collaboration between Moroccan institutions and target nations such as Asian and African countries. As well, it is clear that the Moroccan Journal of Chemistry is an interesting venue for the most productive chemical researchers in Morocco for sharing preliminary research findings and discussing trendy topics.

RESUMO

COVID-19 pandemic has caused disruption in higher medical education and healthcare worldwide. To thrive in times of uncertainty, medical higher education institutions have to adapt to the post-COVID-19 era and innovate its international activities. To make a difference in societies locally, nationally and internationally, they will have to enhance their global presence. Internationalization is the best way to the exchanging of knowledge, enhancement of the medical curriculum, and mobilization of talent and resources for research and teaching. To remain competitive, universities will need to expand their international activities. This paper highlights several suggestions to enhance internationalization of medical higher education institutions in the post-COVID-19 era.

This article gives a Tunisian perspective to the ongoing debate on the adoption of English-medium instruction (EMI) across the globe and notably in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). It explores the attitudes of students toward EMI, especially in relation to French, the default medium of instruction at Tunisian universities. It also investigates the challenges that students encounter in courses mediated through English. Finally, it reports on the current EMI practices as they are conducted in the classroom setting. The article uses a mixed approach involving quantitative data collected via an online survey and qualitative data via classroom observation and note-taking. It was found that students typically held a positive attitude toward English and an awareness of its importance. They displayed a pragmatic stance as they associated English with research, technology, mobility, employability, and career prospects. While English is used as the language of the curriculum and documentation, students engage in translanguaging practices to ensure an effective dialog with content teachers and better acquisition of academic content. Given their multilingual repertoire and the status of French, students used French and English in parallel and, to a lesser extent, Tunisian Arabic. They tended to switch to French to ensure a more effective classroom exchange, especially when English fails them. Teachers used translanguaging in order to promote students' engagement in the academic content.
