RESUMO

Muscle dysfunction and muscle atrophy are common complications resulting from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The evaluation of the peripheral muscles can be carried out through the assessment of their structural components from ultrasound images or their functional components through isometric and isotonic strength tests. This evaluation, performed mainly on the quadriceps muscle, is not only of great interest for diagnosis, prognosis and monitoring of COPD, but also for the evaluation of the benefits of therapeutic interventions. In this work, bioimpedance spectroscopy technology is proposed as a low-cost and easy-to-use alternative for the evaluation of peripheral muscles, becoming a feasible alternative to ultrasound images and strength tests for their application in routine clinical practice. For this purpose, a laboratory prototype of a bioimpedance device has been adapted to perform segmental measurements in the quadriceps region. The validation results obtained in a pseudo-randomized study in patients with COPD in a controlled clinical environment which involved 33 volunteers confirm the correlation and correspondence of the bioimpedance parameters with respect to the structural and functional parameters of the quadriceps muscle, making it possible to propose a set of prediction equations. The main contribution of this manuscript is the discovery of a linear relationship between quadriceps muscle properties and the bioimpedance Cole model parameters, reaching a correlation of 0.69 and an average error of less than 0.2 cm regarding the thickness of the quadriceps estimations from ultrasound images, and a correlation of 0.77 and an average error of 3.9 kg regarding the isometric strength of the quadriceps muscle.

A prior study reported that the concentric strength imbalance between hamstrings and quadriceps is associated with falls in older adults. Given that the concentric strength may not be measured as conveniently as the isometric strength, it is meaningful to test whether the isometric hamstring-quadricep strength imbalance is related to falls among older adults. This study sought to explore whether the hamstrings-quadriceps ratio could differentiate fallers from non-fallers in community-dwelling older adults. One hundred and eleven older adults were included in this cross-sectional study. Their isometric knee joint strength capacity (extensors and flexors) was measured. Based on their fall history in the past year, they were classified as fallers (at least one fall) or non-fallers (no fall). The hamstrings-quadriceps ratio was compared between the faller and non-faller groups. The receiver operating characteristic analysis was used to determine the cutoff value of the hamstrings-quadriceps ratio able to best classify fallers and non-fallers. Fallers showed a significantly lower hamstrings-quadriceps ratio than non-fallers (p = 0.008). The receiver operating characteristic analysis identified 0.733 as the best ratio to differentiate fallers from non-fallers with an accuracy of 64.0 %. A 0.1-unit reduction in the hamstrings-quadriceps ratio increases the probability of falling by a factor of 1.30. The hamstrings-quadriceps ratio could be used as an additional fall risk factor when assessing the risk of falls among older adults. A smaller than 0.733 hamstring-quadriceps ratio may indicate a high risk of falls.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the concurrent validity and test-retest reliability of common movement, strength, and balance tests using portable uniaxial dual force plates. DESIGN: Repeated measures cross-sectional study. METHODS: Sixteen healthy individuals participated in two testing sessions, where they performed 12 different movement, strength, and balance tests. Vertical ground reaction force and centre of pressure data were collected using the VALD ForceDecks simultaneously with ground-embedded laboratory force plates. Concurrent validity was assessed using root mean square error for raw time-series data and Bland-Altman plots for discrete metrics. Test-retest reliability was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients and minimal detectable changes. RESULTS: ForceDecks recorded vertical ground reaction forces and center of pressure with high accuracy compared to laboratory force plates. The mean bias between systems was negligible (<2 N or 0.1 mm), with small limits of agreement (<5 N or 1 mm). Overall, 530/674 (79%) showed good or excellent validity (<10% difference) and 611/773 (79%) had good or excellent reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient >0.75). ForceDecks reliability was similar to laboratory force plates (<0.07 intraclass correlation coefficient median difference for all metrics). CONCLUSIONS: Portable uniaxial force plates record highly accurate vertical ground reaction forces and center of pressure during a range of movement, strength, and balance tests. The VALD ForcDecks are a valid and reliable alternative to laboratory force plates when strict standardized testing and data analysis procedures are followed. Users should be aware of the validity and reliability characteristics of the tests and metrics they choose.

BACKGROUND: Pole dancing is a physically demanding sport that combines dance and acrobatic movements on a vertical pole. Despite its highly growing popularity, there is currently limited research in the field. The aim of this study was to create and evaluate a strength assessment protocol for athletes in pole dancing, with a specific focus on functional positions on the pole. METHODS: Thirty-two female pole dancing athletes participated in this study. Maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC) were measured at three different sport-specific positions on the pole (shoulder abduction and adduction, and hip adduction), on two separate days (test and re-test) with a five to seven day interval between them. A hand-held dynamometer (Activ5- Activbody) stabilized on the pole was used for this study. RESULTS: The intra-session reliability was good to excellent for all sports-specific positions and for both sides of the body, across all different movements (ICC = 0.837-0.960, SEM = 5.02Kg-2.24Kg, and SDD = 27.46%-14.92%). Slightly better results were found regarding inter-session reliability (ICC = 0.927-0.970, SEM = 3.72Kg-1.97Kg, and SDD = 22.86%-15.19%). There was not a statistically significant difference between the MVICs between the left and right or dominant and non-dominant side in shoulder abduction (p = 0.105) and hip adduction (p = 0.282), in contrast to shoulder adduction (p = 0.00). CONCLUSION: The strength assessment protocol developed in the current study has proven to be a reliable and functional tool, with the potential for utilization in clinical practice as part of objective strength testing. Further studies are needed in order to expand the protocol to other muscle groups and positions and to generalize the results in all pole dancing populations such as male athletes.

This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate whether athletes (ATHL) and non-athletes (NON-ATHL) individuals had similar accuracy in matching intended to actual force during ballistic (BAL) and tonic (TON) isometric contractions. In this cross-sectional study, the subjects were divided into ATHL (n = 20; 22.4 ± 2.3 yrs; 73.2 ± 15.7 kg; 1.76 ± 0.08 m) and NON-ATHL (n = 20; 24.6 ± 2.4 yrs; 68.2 ± 15.0 kg; 1.73 ± 0.1 m) groups. The isometric quadriceps strength was measured with a load cell applied to a custom-built chair. For each condition, subjects performed at first three maximal voluntary isometric contractions (MVIC) as reference. Then, subjects had to match three intended force intensities expressed in percentage of the MVIC (i.e., 25%, 50%, and 75%) without any external feedback. Subjects performed three trials for each force intensity. The accuracy (AC) was calculated as the absolute difference in percentage between the intended and the actual force. A Likert scale was administered for each trial to assess the subjective matching between the intended and the actual force. Statistical analysis showed that the ATHL group was more accurate (p < 0.001) than the NON-ATHL group. In contrast, the AC (p < 0.001) was lower when the force intensities increased independently from the group. Moreover, significantly higher AC (p < 0.001) and lower aggregate Likert scores (p < 0.001) were found in BAL than TON conditions. These results suggest that (i) sports practice could enhance muscle recruitment strategies by increasing the AC in the isometric task; (ii) differences between intended and actual force appeared to be intensity-dependent with lower AC at high force intensities; (iii) different control systems act in modulating BAL and TON contractions.

Purpose: Alpine ski racing is a complex sport where no single factor can exclusively account for performance. We assessed body composition, using bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA), and our purpose was to study its influence on the strength and power profile of young alpine skiers. Methods: Anthropometric measurements and advanced BIVA parameters were recorded on eighteen alpine ski racers (6 females/12 males; 17.0 ± 1.3 years; 172.2 ± 9.3 cm; 68.5 ± 9.8 kg). Dynamic force and power were assessed using countermovement jumps (CMJ), while maximal isometric strength was evaluated for hip flexion-extension and abduction-adduction movements. Stepwise regression models examined the relationship between BIVA-derived parameters and strength/power variables. Results: Body cellular mass (BCM) positively related to jump height (p = .021, R2 = 74%), jump momentum (p < .001, R2 = 89%), reactive strength index modified (p = .026, R2 = 75%) and peak concentric power (p < .001, R2 = 82%), while intracellular water (ICW) related to peak eccentric (p < .001, R2 = 76%) and concentric force (p < .001, R2 = 77%) as well as to concentric rate of force development together with the phase angle (PhA) (p = .008, R2 = 79% and R2 = 0.015). Regarding isometric assessment, ICW was a significant predictor for all four movement directions, and PhA contributed to hip adduction strength. Conclusions: Body composition, particularly BCM and ICW, significantly predict force- and power-related factors in young alpine skiers.

User-friendly rehabilitation medical devices can enhance health and the quality of life through the convergence of information communication and medical technology. Muscle contraction enables bodily movement, and the assessment of muscle strength is crucial. Muscle contraction includes isometric, isotonic, and isokinetic types. Many individuals with physical disabilities rely on wheelchairs due to lower-limb paralysis. There is a substantial correlation between the level of upper-limb functional recovery and the quality of daily life. This study aimed to design and evaluate a device that utilizes various muscle contractions to enhance the effectiveness of upper-limb rehabilitation exercises. The results from the isometric performance assessment showed percentage error rates of >30% for 5-30 kg. Correction equations were employed, and the isometric performance assessment resulted in error rates below 2.1% for 5-30 kg. Isokinetic performance assessment using video analysis evaluated a consistent wire speed from 10 cm/s to 70 cm/s with an average error rate of 0.91% across all speeds. This study demonstrates the ability to accurately measure various muscle contractions and showcases the potential for real-time feedback. This highlights how such a device could be helpful for target groups, including older adults and individuals with disabilities, during upper-limb rehabilitation exercises.

BACKGROUND: Weakness and atrophy in trunk muscles have been associated with chronic low back pain (CLBP). OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to identify isometric exercises resulting the highest trunk muscle activity for individuals with and without CLBP. METHODS: Fourteen males with CLBP and 15 healthy age-matched healthy subjects were recruited for this study. Muscle activity during maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) was measured for a comparative reference with surface electromyography (sEMG) from six trunk muscles. Thereafter maximum EMG amplitude values were measured during eleven trunk stability exercises. The maximal EMG activity in each exercise relative to the MVICs was analyzed using generalizing estimating equations (GEE) models with the unstructured correlation structure. RESULTS: The GEE models showed statistically significant differences in muscle activity between exercises within both groups (p< 0.001), with no significant differences between groups (p> 0.05). The highest muscle activity was achieved with the hip flexion machine for multifidus, side pull with a resistance band for lumbar extensors, side and single-arm cable pull exercises for thoracic extensors, rotary plank and the hip flexion machine for abdominal. CONCLUSION: This study found five isometric trunk exercises that exhibited highest muscle activity depending on muscle tested, with no significant difference between individuals with and without CLBP.

OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to assess the psychological, functional, and physical differences between patients with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) syndrome and individuals who were asymptomatic (controls) to analyze clinical differences among 4 subtypes of FAI (cam type, cam type with labral tear, pincer type, and pincer type with labral tear), to calculate the correlations among the variables described, and to identify risk factors contributing to the hip function variance. METHODS: A case-control study was conducted at a hospital rehabilitation unit with a cohort of individuals who were asymptomatic (controls) and a cohort of patients with FAI. Sociodemographic characteristics, pain intensity, psychological health status, hip range of motion (RoM), hip isometric strength, and hip function were assessed. RESULTS: A total of 69 controls and 69 patients with FAI were analyzed. Although sociodemographic characteristics were comparable between samples, poorer hip RoM, strength, and psychological health were found for the cases. FAI subtypes showed no significant pain intensity, psychological health, or RoM differences (except for hip adduction), but hip strength differed among FAI subtypes. Multiple significant correlations between psychological health, pain intensity, RoM, strength, and hip function were found. The variance values of the International Hip Outcome Tool, Hip Outcome Score (HOS) for daily living activities, and HOS for sports activities were partially explained (47.6%, 36.0%, and 21.6%, respectively) on the basis of kinesiophobia, hip strength, self-efficacy, and anxiety. CONCLUSION: Patients with FAI showed poorer psychological health, hip RoM, and strength than individuals who were asymptomatic and had similar sociodemographic characteristics. FAI subtype influenced the patients' clinical presentations. Hip strength, kinesiophobia, anxiety, and self-efficacy should be targeted for improving hip function, as they have been demonstrated to be important contributors to hip disability. IMPACT: This study demonstrated that pain catastrophizing, hip strength, and hip adduction differed among FAI subtypes. However, hip function and pain intensity were comparable between FAI subtypes.

Isometric strength testing using a digital dynamometer is reliable for muscle function evaluation. It allows us to objectify manual strength assessment measurement. We tested intra- and inter-observer reliability of a user-friendly efficient digital dynamometer-the Forcemeter-equipped with a computer program to monitor the measurements and to store the data. Abduction, forward flexion, and external and internal rotation of both shoulders were tested three times in 20 healthy volunteers with no record of shoulder trauma. Isometric contracture was recorded in newtons. The first and the third test were carried out by Examiner A (intra-rater reliability); the second test, by Examiner B (inter-rater reliability). Good reliability was shown for intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) values which mean moderate to high correlations (r = 0.66-0.93) for both examiners. Moderate to high correlations (r = 0.72-0.91) were found for comparisons between the results obtained by Examiner A.

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the evidence on reliability and criterion validity of hip muscle strength testing using portable dynamometers. DESIGN: Systematic review with meta-analysis. LITERATURE SEARCH: Five databases were searched from inception to March 2023. STUDY SELECTION CRITERIA: We included studies investigating reliability or criterion validity of hip flexor, extensor, abductor, adductor, or internal/external rotator strength testing with portable dynamometers in injury-free individuals or those with pelvic/lower limb musculoskeletal disorders. DATA SYNTHESIS: We performed meta-analyses for each muscle group, position, and method of fixation. We rated pooled results as sufficient (>75% of studies with correlations ≥0.70), insufficient (>75% of studies with correlations <0.70), or inconsistent (sufficient/insufficient results). We assessed the quality of evidence, created evidence gap maps, and made clinical recommendations. RESULTS: We included a total of 107 studies (reliability 103, validity 14). The intrarater and interrater reliability for hip muscle strength testing across different positions and methods of fixation was sufficient (intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.78-0.96) with low- to high-quality evidence. Criterion validity was less investigated and mostly inconsistent (very low-to moderate-quality evidence) with a wide range of correlations (r = 0.40-0.93). CONCLUSION: Hip muscle strength testing using portable dynamometers is reliable. The use of portable dynamometers as clinical surrogates for measuring strength using an isokinetic dynamometer requires further investigation. Clinicians testing hip muscle strength with portable dynamometers should use external fixation seated for hip flexors, prone or supine for hip extensors, side-lying or supine for abductors and adductors, and prone and seated for internal and external rotators. The use of strength training is important for athletes in combat sports such as judo and jiu-jitsu. Specificity is key when prescribing strength training programs for athletes, considering maximal strength, muscular power and strength-endurance. Grappling combat sports require grip control, which is necessary to execute throwing techniques and groundwork. The aim of this study was to verify the bilateral strength deficit in general and in grappling combat sport-specific action in the control group and grapplers. A sample of 73 subjects, divided into 2 groups, was used: the Student Group (15 females and 16 males) and the Grappler Group (29 males and 13 females). The male and female participants attended four laboratory sessions over a 48-hour interval, the first two to familiarize themselves with the Electromechanical Functional Dynamometer (EMFD), and the last two to collect maximal isometric strength data, using a standard grip and a judo/jiujitsu specific grip. Significant differences in mean and peak forces (p < 0.001) were found, with high performance combat sport athletes having greater maximal isometric strength compared to students both bilaterally and unilaterally (p < 0.001). All comparisons also indicated higher values for males compared to females (p < 0.001). The results suggest that specific training in combat sports as well as sex differences play a significant role in maximal isometric strength performance. The type of grip used affects the application of force in the upper limb isometric strength tests, finding a main effect of grip type (p < 0.001), with the standard grip obtaining higher levels. However, the dominance between hands remains constant. More research is needed on specific judogi/jiu-jitsu-gi grips and their impact on maximal isometric strength with the EMFD.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a disorder associated with an increased risk for the development of diabetes mellitus and its complications. Lower isometric handgrip strength (HGS) is associated with an increased risk of cardiometabolic diseases. However, the association between HGS and arterial stiffness parameters, which are considered the predictors of morbidity and mortality in individuals with MetS, is not well defined. OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between HGS and HGS asymmetry on components of vascular function in adults with MetS. METHODS: We measured handgrip strength normalized to bodyweight (HGS/kg), HGS asymmetry, body composition, blood glucose, lipid profile, blood pressure, pulse wave velocity (PWV), reflection coefficient (RC), augmentation index @75 bpm (AIx@75) and peripheral vascular resistance (PVR) in 55 adults with a diagnosis of MetS between 25 and 54 years old. RESULTS: Mean age was 43.1 ± 7.0 years, 56.3% were females. HGS/kg was negatively correlated with AIx@75 (r = -0.440), p < 0.05, but these associations were not significant after adjusting for age and sex. However, when interaction effects between sex, HGS/kg and age were examined, we observed an inverse relationship between HGS/kg and AIx@75 in the older adults in the sample, whereas in the younger adults, a weak direct association was found. We also found a significant association between HGS asymmetry and PVR (beta = 30, 95% CI = 7.02; 54.2; p <0.012). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that in people with MetS, maintaining muscle strength may have an increasingly important role in older age in the attenuation of age-related increases in AIx@75-a marker of vascular stiffness-and that a higher HGS asymmetry could be associated with a greater vascular resistance.

This study investigated the relationships between maximal club head speed (CHS) and physiological and anthropometric parameters in 21 national-level male golfers (age: 21.9 ± 3.9 years; handicap: +1.1 ± 1.7). Maximal isometric strength (MVC) was measured during isometric mid-thigh pull and bench press, while MVC and rate of force development (RFD) were measured during isometric leg press. Power, lower limb stiffness, positive impulse, jump height and RFDdyn were measured during countermovement jump (CMJ). Moreover, rotational trunk power, active range of motion (AROM) and anthropometrics were determined. Comparisons were made between participants with high (FTG) and low (STG) CHS, respectively. FTG demonstrated greater isometric mid-thigh pull and isometric bench press MVC, leg press RFD, rotational trunk power, and CMJ parameters (except RFDdyn) as well as reduced hip AROM compared to STG (P < 0.01). CHS was positively correlated to isometric mid-thigh pull and isometric bench press MVC, leg press RFD, rotational trunk power and CMJ parameters (P < 0.01). In conclusion, strong positive correlations were observed between maximal CHS and maximal strength and power parameters. Field lacrosse requires sudden directional changes and rapid acceleration/deceleration. The capacity to perform these skills is dependent on explosive muscle force production. Limited research exists on the potential of sprint interval training (SIT) to impact explosive muscle force production in field lacrosse players. The purpose of this study is to examine SIT, concurrent to field-lacrosse-specific training, on the rate of torque development (RTD), contractile impulse, and muscle function in female high school field lacrosse players (n = 12; 16 ± 1 yrs.). SIT was performed three times per week, concurrent to field-lacrosse-specific training, for 12 weeks. Right lower-limb muscle performance was assessed pre-, mid-, and post-SIT training via isometric and isokinetic concentric knee extensor contractions. Outcomes included RTD (Nm·s-1), contractile impulse (Nm·s), and peak torque (Nm). RTD for the first 50 ms of contraction improved by 42% by midseason and remained elevated at postseason (p = 0.004, effect size (ES) = -577.3 to 66.5). Contractile impulse demonstrated a training effect across 0-50 ms (42%, p = 0.004, ES = -1.4 to 0.4), 0-100 ms (33%, p = 0.018, ES = 3.1 to 0.9), and 0-200 ms (22%, p = 0.031, ES = -7.8 to 1.6). Isometric (0 rad·s-1) and concentric (3.1 rad·s-1) strength increased by 20% (p = 0.002, ES = -60.8 to -20.8) and 9% (p = 0.038, ES = -18.2 to 0.0) from SIT and field-lacrosse-specific training, respectively (p < 0.05). SIT, concurrent to field-lacrosse-specific training, enhanced lower-limb skeletal muscle performance, which may enable greater sport-specific gains.

OBJECTIVES: Compare lower extremity muscle volume in females with patellofemoral pain (PFP) to a cohort of pain-free females and investigate the relationship between thigh and hip muscle volume and torque. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-one females, 13 with PFP and 8 pain-free controls. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: We quantified normalized lower extremity muscle volume (cm3/kg*m) via magnetic resonance imaging and isometric hip and thigh torque (Nm/kg) via a multimodal dynamometer. RESULTS: Versus pain-free individuals, females with PFP had smaller muscle volume of the anterior hip (P < 0.019; d = 0.97-2.42), deep external rotators (P < 0.006; d = 1.0-3.93), hamstrings (P < 0.009; d = 1.09-2.12), rectus femoris (P < 0.001; d = 1.79), and vastus intermedius (P < 0.001; d = 1.88). There was no difference in muscle volume of the gluteus maximus (P = 0.311; d = 0.22), gluteus medius (P = 0.087; d = 0.87), vastus lateralis (P = 0.22; d = 0.39), and vastus medialis (P = 0.47; d = 0.04). Gluteus maximus volume was moderately correlated to hip abduction torque (r = 0.60; P = 0.03). Vasti muscles and semitendinosus volume were moderately correlated to knee extension (r = 0.57-0.69; P < 0.05) and flexion (r = 0.66; P = 0.01) torque, respectively. CONCLUSION: Females with PFP present with lesser thigh and hip muscle volumes, with variability in volumetric profiles across participants. Lower extremity knee extension and hip abduction strength are moderately associated with the vasti and gluteus maximus muscle volume, respectively.

Background: The literature supports quantifying the maximum force/tension generated by one's forearm muscles such as the hand grip strength (HGS) to screen for physical and cognitive frailty in older adults. Thus, we postulate that individuals with cerebral palsy (CP), who are at higher risk for premature aging, could benefit from tools that objectively measure muscle strength as a functional biomarker to detect frailty and cognitive decline. This study assesses the clinical relevancy of the former and quantifies isometric muscle strength to determine its association with cognitive function in adults with CP. Methods: Ambulatory adults with CP were identified from a patient registry and were enrolled into this study. Peak rate of force development (RFD) and maximum voluntary isometric contraction of the quadriceps were measured using a commercial isokinetic machine, while HGS was collected with a clinical dynamometer. Dominant and non-dominant side were identified. Standardized cognitive assessments, including the Wechsler Memory and Adult Intelligence Scales IV, Short Test of Mental Status, and the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS®) were used to evaluate cognitive function. Results: A total of 57 participants (32 females; mean age 24.3 [SD 5.3]; GMFCS levels I-IV) were included in the analysis. Although dominant and non-dominant RFD and HGS measures were associated with cognitive function, non-dominant peak RFD showed the strongest associations with cognitive function. Conclusion: RFD capacity may reflect age-related neural and physical health and could be a better health indicator than HGS in the CP population.

Impella 5.0 circulatory support via subclavian artery (SA) access may be a safe approach for patients undergoing cardiac rehabilitation (CR). In this case series, we retrospectively analyzed the demographic characteristics, physical function, and CR data of six patients who underwent Impella 5.0 implantation via the SA prior to left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation between October 2013 and June 2021. The median age was 48 years, and one patient was female. Grip strength was maintained or increased in all patients before LVAD implantation (pre-LVAD) compared to after Impella 5.0 implantation. The pre-LVAD knee extension isometric strength (KEIS) was less than 0.46 kgf/kg in two patients and more than 0.46 kgf/kg in three patients (unavailable KEIS data, n = 1). With Impella 5.0 implantation, two patients could ambulate, one could stand, two could sit on the edge of the bed, and one remained in bed. One patient lost consciousness during CR due to decreased Impella flow. There were no other serious adverse events. Impella 5.0 implantation via the SA allows mobilization, including ambulation, prior to LVAD implantation, and CR can be performed relatively safely.

Early detection of alteration of muscle strength, quantity, and quality, and sarcopenia is useful in non-cirrhotic chronic hepatitis B (NC-CHB) patients. Studies, which explored the handgrip strength (HGS) are scarce with questionable results, and no previous case-control study explored the presence of sarcopenia.The aim of this study was to assess the muscle strength [i.e.; HGS absolute (HGSA), HGSA/body mass index (BMI)], muscle quantity [i.e.; appendicular skeletal muscle (ASM), ASM/height2, ASM/total body weight (TBW), ASM/BMI], and muscle quality [i.e.; HGSA/total muscle mass (TMM), HGSA/ASM] of NC-CHB patients.This was a case-control study. Cases (n = 26) were untreated NC-CHB patients, and controls (n = 28) were 'apparently' healthy participants. Muscle mass was estimated via the TMM (kg) and ASM (kg). Muscle strength was evaluated via the HGS data [i.e.; HGSA (kg), HGSA/BMI (m2)]. Six variants of HGSA were determined: highest values for the dominant and non-dominant hands, highest value between the two hands, averages of the three measurements for the two hands, and the average of the highest values of the two hands. Muscle quantity was expressed in three relative variants (ASM/height2, ASM/TBW, and ASM/BMI). Muscle quality was evaluated via relative HGS data adjusted by muscle mass (i.e.; HGSA/TMM, HGSA/ASM). Probable and confirmed sarcopenia were retained in front of low muscle strength, and low muscle strength and muscle quantity or quality, respectively.There were no significant differences between controls and NC-CHB patients in values of muscle i) Strength whatever the HGS' mode of expression (e.g.; HGSA/BMI: 1.59 ± 0.54 vs. 1.53 ± 0.54 m2, p = 0.622, respectively), ii) Quantity (e.g.; ASM/BMI: 0.79 ± 0.24 vs. 0.77 ± 0.23 m2, p = 0.883), and iii) Quality (e.g.; HGSA/ASM: 2.00 ± 0.25 vs. 2.01 ± 0.41, p = 0.952, respectively). One NC-CHB participant had a confirmed sarcopenia.To conclude, both controls and NC-CHB patients had similar HGS values. Only one NC-CHB patient had a confirmed sarcopenia.

Background: Upper limb balance is one of the important physical fitness parameters for all populations, especially overhead athletes like swimmers. Upper extremity star excursion balance test (UESEBT) is a comprehensive dynamic balance assessment, this study aims to explore the reliability and validity of UESEBT among adolescent swimmers. Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited 70 adolescent swimmers. All participants were required to complete UESEBT, upper quarter Y-balance test (UQYBT), maximal isometric strength (MIS) tests in upper limb, closed kinetic chain upper extremity stability test (CKCUEST), trunk flexor endurance test (TFET) and lateral trunk endurance test (LTET). The intra- and inter-operator reliability and the correlation of UESEBT with other physical performances were conducted. Results: For reliability, the intra- and inter-operator reliability of all directions and composite score were high-to-excellent (ICC = 0.706-1.000) among all participants. For validity, the UESEBT has a moderate-to-strong correlation with UQYBT (r = 0.42-0.72, p < 0.001), and a weak-to moderate one with CKCUEST (r = 0.25-0.42, p < 0.05). Furthermore, the UESEBT performance showed weak-to-moderate correlations with MIS (r = 0.24-0.44, p < 0.05). UESEBT was correlated to LTET (r = 0.24-0.33, p < 0.05) whereas no relationship was found with TFET. Conclusions: UESEBT was a reliable and valid tool to screen upper extremity dynamic balance among adolescent swimmers. UESEBT provides more detailed information in eight directions to assess the upper limb sport performance. Further study should explore the prediction ability of UESEBT for injury.
