RESUMO

Excessive consumption of highly palatable foods rich in sugar and fat, often referred to as "junk" or "fast" foods, plays a central role in the development of obesity. The highly palatable characteristics of these foods activate hedonic and motivational mechanisms to promote food-seeking behavior and overeating, which is largely regulated by the brain reward system. Excessive junk food consumption can alter the functioning of this reward system, but exact mechanisms of these changes are still largely unknown. This study investigated whether long-term junk food consumption, in the form of Cafeteria (CAF) diet, can alter the reward system in adult, female Long-Evans rats, and whether different regimes of CAF diet influence the extent of these changes. To this end, rats were exposed to a 6-week diet with either standard chow, or ad libitum daily access to CAF diet, 30 % restricted but daily access to CAF diet, or one-day-a-week (intermittent) ad libitum access to CAF diet, after which c-Fos expression in the Nucleus Accumbens (NAc), Prefrontal Cortex (PFC), and Ventral Tegmental Area (VTA) following consumption of a CAF reward of choice was examined. We found that all CAF diet regimes decreased c-Fos expression in the NAc-shell when presented with a CAF reward, while no changes in c-Fos expression upon the different diet regimes were found in the PFC, and possibly the VTA. Our data suggests that long-term junk food exposure can affect the brain reward system, resulting in an attenuated activity of the NAc-shell.

BACKGROUND: Diet and lifestyle play important roles in preventing and improving chronic diseases, and evaluating behavioral risk factors in these pathologies allows for efficient management. METHODS: A clinical study by screening biochemical parameters and pulmonary function was carried out to evaluate behavioral risk factors in obstructive pulmonary disease associated with metabolic syndrome. RESULTS: Of the total of 70 patients included in the clinical study, 46 were men and 24 were women (χ2 = 3.9, p = 0.168). Forty-eight patients presented at least three met risk criteria associated with the metabolic syndrome (19 women and 29 men). Regarding the assessment of lung function, only 7 of the patients presented normal spirometry values (χ2 = 75.28, p < 0.001), and the other 63 patients presented with ventilatory dysfunction; most (over 80%) declared that they were smokers or had smoked in the past (χ2 = 5.185, p = 0.075). In terms of body weight, 45 of the patients are overweight or obese, most of them declaring that they do not consume enough vegetable products, they consume large amounts of foods of animal origin (meat, milk, eggs) but also super processed foods (food products type of junk food), do not hydrate properly, and are predominantly sedentary people (54 of the patients do no physical activity at all; χ2 = 2.12, p = 0.713). CONCLUSION: From the statistical processing of the data, it is noted that insufficient hydration, low consumption of vegetables, increased consumption of hyper-caloric food products rich in additives, sedentary lifestyle, and smoking are the main disruptive behavioral factors that worsen the health status in lung disease associated with the metabolic syndrome. An important conclusion emerging from the study is that the imbalances that aggravate obstructive lung diseases are generated by unhealthy food and an unbalanced lifestyle.

Exposure to different types of images on social media is known to affect physical and mental wellbeing including changes in perception of body image (BI) and dietary behavior. The present study aimed to assess the effects of junk food-related Instagram content exposure on body image, overall mood, and cravings in young adults. A randomized crossover experimental design was used. After filling out a baseline survey, participants (n = 63, aged 18-24) browsed either a control Instagram account feed or an account rich in junk food images during 15 min. They then filled a short survey evaluating their state BI, mood, and cravings (T1). After a 1-week washout period (T2), participants browsed the other account type followed by the same short survey as in T1. Results showed that exposure to junk food content was associated with increased feelings of hunger, stress, sadness, and exhaustion, in addition to higher salty, savory, and fatty food cravings. Moreover, participants showed higher desire for junk food and lower desire for healthy food items from a virtual food tray after junk food content exposure. There was no impact of content type on state BI dissatisfaction. In conclusion, exposure to junk-food related content on social media negatively affects mood and cravings, subsequently influencing food choices. The present findings shed light on the need for interventions aimed at providing cognitive and emotional competencies for enhancing media literacy and promoting mindful social media use.

OBJECTIVE: Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a common reproductive and endocrinological disorder that affects a significant percentage of women worldwide. Despite its high prevalence, the possible environmental factors that influence the development of PCOS, especially dietary habits, are still unclear. The aim of this study is to investigate the association between PCOS and junk food consumption among women of childbearing age in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from February 2023 to April 2023 in 155 women diagnosed with PCOS according to the Rotterdam criteria. Participants aged 18-47 years and living in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia completed a validated 30-item electronic questionnaire that included sociodemographic information, medical history, PCOS symptoms, and fast food consumption patterns. RESULTS: The study revealed a high prevalence of obesity and overweight among PCOS patients, which was significantly associated with their diets high in carbohydrates, fats, and refined sugars. In addition, weight loss was difficult for these patients, which could be influenced by hormonal imbalances and dietary factors. In particular, fast food consumption showed a significant association with facial acne in PCOS patients, while some participants also experienced excessive hair growth on the face, abdomen, and back, which may be related to excessive fat intake. CONCLUSION: This study provides evidence to support an association between junk food consumption and the prevalence of PCOS among women of reproductive age in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The findings suggest that dietary patterns may influence the development and treatment of PCOS, highlighting the need for lifestyle interventions as part of treatment strategies. Further studies with larger and more diverse populations, as well as longitudinal studies, are warranted to clarify causal relationships and gain a comprehensive understanding of the impact of dietary factors on the development and progression of PCOS. Identifying the potential effects of diet on PCOS can lead to more effective treatments and improve the overall health and well-being of those affected.

Quality of life, well-being, and psycho-emotional balance are closely related to the quality of the diet, the level of physical activity, the quality of rest, but also the absence of the consumption of narcotic substances and tobacco, or alcohol abuse. Based on the distribution of a questionnaire that included 30 questions, we aimed to statistically evaluate several factors that influence mental health and vices. It recorded a total of 1719 valid responses, which came from 78.3% female respondents and 21.7% male respondents. After processing the anthropometric data, it was observed that the majority of respondents are of normal weight (63.87%) and come from women in particular (36.13%). Based on the answers recorded, although over 60% of the respondents participating in the study are up to 40 years old, there is an increased tendency towards sedentarism (over 58% of the respondents declaring that they do sports very rarely or not at all), a low tendency regarding optimal consumption of vegetables and fruits, many respondents do not hydrate properly, which is why approximately 60% of respondents feel frequently tired, and over 32% are frequently nervous. The increased level of stress among the respondents and emotional eating are also generated by inadequate rest, reduced physical activity, and a diet that does not help the efficient detoxification of the body.

Junk foods are typically low in essential nutrients, such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They are also loaded with trans fats and saturated fats, which can increase the level of triglycerides in the blood. High triglyceride levels can contribute to the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a condition where excess fat accumulates in the liver. A high intake of junk foods can lead to insulin resistance, a condition where the body's cells become less responsive to insulin. A diet lacking in nutrients and loaded with unwanted toxins can impair the liver's ability to detoxify harmful substances and damage its overall function. It is known that the regular consumption of junk food can be linked to memory impairment and cognitive decline. Several studies have shown that diets high in unhealthy fats, sugars, and processed foods can negatively impact brain health, including memory function. In this study, Wistar rats were used to model Late-Onset Alzheimer's Disease (LOAD), which was inspired by knowledge of the liver-brain axis's role in causing dementia. The model mimicked junk-food-induced liver-brain damage, and was developed by using the toxins d-galactosamine, ethanol and d-galactose. To begin with, the model rats demonstrated insulin resistance, a characteristic of LOAD patients. Glucose levels in both the brain and liver tissues were significantly elevated in the model, paralleling clinical findings in LOAD patients. High glucose levels in the brain lead to the increased production of advanced glycation end-products (AGEs), which, along with amyloid beta, harm neighbouring neurons. Histopathological analysis revealed deformed glial nodules, apoptotic neurons, and amyloid plaques in the brain section in the later stages of the disease. Simultaneously, the liver section displayed features of cirrhosis, including an effaced lobular architecture and the extravasation of red blood cells. Liver enzymes ALT, AST and ALP were consistently elevated with disease progression. Furthermore, immunohistochemistry confirmed the presence of amyloid precursor protein (APP) in the diseased brain. The positive expression of Hypoxia-Inducible Factor 3-Alpha (HIF3A) in the brain indicated hypoxic conditions, which is consistent with other LOAD studies. This model also exhibited damaged intestinal villi and excessive bowel and urinary incontinence, indicating malnutrition and a disturbed gut microbiome, which is also consistent with LOAD patients. Bioinformatics analysis on serum protein suggests a few affected molecular pathways, like the amyloid secretase pathway, androgen/oestrogen/progesterone biosynthesis, the apoptosis signalling pathway, the insulin/IGF pathway-protein kinase B signalling cascade, the Metabotropic glutamate receptor group I pathway, the Wnt signalling pathway, etc. Behavioural analysis confirmed memory decline and the loss of muscle strength with disease progression. Overall, this rat model of LOAD sheds valuable light on LOAD pathology and highlights the potential link between liver dysfunction, particularly induced by the excessive consumption of junk food, and LOAD. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the complex molecular mechanisms involved in LOAD, paving the way for new possibilities in therapeutic interventions.

INTRODUCTION: Childhood obesity in India is on the rise and is rarely raised as a concern. In the central Indian states, focus is largely on undernutrition. Thus, studies related to risk factors for being overweight and obese and the impact of obesity on the psychology of children are lacking. Hence, a hospital-based study with objectives to identify social and demographic factors associated with obesity and the estimation of the prevalence of depression among these children was conducted. METHODS: This observational study was conducted in a tertiary care institute in the state of Chhattisgarh from July 2020 to October 2021. Children with obesity as per the WHO (> 95th percentile for the BMI) in the age group of 6-12 years were included after due consent. A proforma was administered targeting the objectives of the study and the Childhood Depression Rating Scale (CDR-S) and clinical evaluation identified the depressed. RESULTS: Among the 5,019 children screened during the study period, 54 met the inclusion criteria (1.07%). Fifty percent of children were from the upper middle class as per the Kuppuswamy scale. Seventy percent consumed junk food more than three times a week. Twenty-three children (42.6%) engaged in physical activity of > 1 hour and 49(90.7%) had a screen time of > 2 hours. The prevalence of depression among these children stood at 5.6% with the mean age being 11.67 years. Multiple logistic regression showed an inverse association of depression with physical activity. CONCLUSION: Obesity is prevalent in higher socioeconomic groups. Many risk factors like screen time, junk food consumption, and physical activity are modifiable. The prevalence of depression increased with age. Physical activity showed an inverse relation to depression in obese children.

Introduction One-third to one-half of females with primary dysmenorrhea are missing school or work at least once per cycle, and more frequently 5% to 14% of them. Dysmenorrhea is one of the most common gynecologic disorders among young girls and is the major cause of activity restriction and college absence. A direct link between primary menstrual abnormalities and chronic conditions such as obesity has been established, though the exact pathology behind it is yet unknown. Method A total of 420 female students between 18 and 25 years of age from various professional colleges in a metro city were included in the study. Semi-structured questionnaire was used. Students were examined for height and weight. Results History of dysmenorrhea was given by 82.6% students. Out of these, 30% had severe pain and required medication. Only 20% took professional help for the same. There was a high prevalence of dysmenorrhea in participants who ate food outside frequently. Prevalence of irregular menstruation was more (41.94%) in girls having junk food three to four times a week. Conclusion The prevalence of dysmenorrhea and premenstrual symptoms were much higher as compared to the other menstrual abnormalities. The study revealed a direct association between consumption of junk food and an increase in dysmenorrhea.

Background: From the dawn of the 21st century, there has been an exponential increase in junk food consumption among Indians. The Indian parliament holds periodic question and answer sessions wherein several key issues of the nation are discussed by representatives across the country. Materials and Methods: Questions pertaining to junk foods and soft drinks that were documented between January 2001 and July 2021 in both houses of the parliament were included in the study. They were organized using MaxQDA software. Thematic analysis of the questions was done using Braun and Clarke's phases for thematic analysis. Results: A total of 424 questions (0.08%) were asked collectively on junk foods including soft drinks in both the houses of which 160 questions (0.03%) were exclusively on junk food and 264 questions (0.05%) were on soft drinks respectively. Out of a total of 28,240 questions asked on all topics across both houses to the MOHFW, a total of 166 questions (0.6 %) were on junk food and soft drinks. Only 84 unique parliamentarians from 21 states have raised their voices on the present topic of concern. Conclusion: A majority of questions were on the adverse effects of junk food and soft drinks. Though there has been consistency in certain states on raising their voices on this topic, around 12 states/union territories failed to represent this issue even once. Further discussions have to be raised under the themes of food poisoning due to junk foods, marketing regulations, stricter media/advertisement regulations and future research objectivess.

Policy Points Suboptimal diet is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity in the United States. Excise taxes on junk food are not widely utilized in the United States. The development of a workable definition of the food to be taxed is a substantial barrier to implementation. Three decades of legislative and regulatory definitions of food for taxes and related purposes provide insight into methods to characterize food to advance new policies. Defining policies through Product Categories combined with Nutrients or Processing may be a method to identify foods for health-related goals. CONTEXT: Suboptimal diet is a substantial contributor to weight gain, cardiometabolic diseases, and certain cancers. Junk food taxes can raise the price of the taxed product to reduce consumption and the revenue can be used to invest in low-resource communities. Taxes on junk food are administratively and legally feasible but no definition of "junk food" has been established. METHODS: To identify legislative and regulatory definitions characterizing food for tax and other related purposes, this research used Lexis+ and the NOURISHING policy database to identify federal, state, territorial, and Washington DC statutes, regulations, and bills (collectively denoted as "policies") defining and characterizing food for tax and related policies, 1991-2021. FINDINGS: This research identified and evaluated 47 unique laws and bills that defined food through one or more of the following criteria: Product Category (20 definitions), Processing (4 definitions), Product intertwined with Processing (19 definitions), Place (12 definitions), Nutrients (9 definitions), and Serving Size (7 definitions). Of the 47 policies, 26 used more than one criterion to define food categories, especially those with nutrition-related goals. Policy goals included taxing foods (snack, healthy, unhealthy, or processed foods), exempting foods from taxation (snack, healthy, unhealthy, or unprocessed foods), exempting homemade or farm-made foods from state and local retail regulations, and supporting federal nutrition assistance objectives. Policies based on Product Categories alone differentiated between necessity/staple foods on the one hand and nonnecessity/nonstaple foods on the other. CONCLUSIONS: In order to specifically identify unhealthy food, policies commonly included a combination of Product Category, Processing, and/or Nutrient criteria. Explanations for repealed state sales tax laws on snack foods identified retailers' difficulty pinpointing which specific foods were subject to the tax as a barrier to implementation. An excise tax assessed on manufacturers or distributors of junk food is a method to overcome this barrier and may be warranted.

At present, China has become one of the fastest growing countries in terms of junk food consumption. However, there has been less previous evidence for the effect of endowment insurance on dietary health. Using the data China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) from 2014, this paper exploits a policy, the New Rural Pension System (NRPS), that only the older adults who have reached 60 years old can receive pensions and conduct a fuzzy regression discontinuity (FRD) to address endogeneity and examine the causal effect of the NRPS on the intake of junk food among rural older adults in China. We find that the NRPS can significantly reduce junk food intake among them, which remains robust after a series of robustness tests. In addition, heterogeneity analysis shows that the female, low-educated, unemployed, and low-income groups are more sensitive to the pension shock from the NRPS. The result of our study provides insights to effectively improve people's dietary quality and related policy formulation.

Background: On a global scale, the mental health consequences of eating habits among the general population are becoming a concern. Particular attention should be directed to the youthful population. Aims: Determine the relationship between university students' consumption of junk food and their levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. Method: University students were asked to complete: a demographic questionnaire, questions on junk food consumption, and depression anxiety stress scores (DASS-21). Body mass index measurements were taken. Logistic regressions were utilized to construct odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals to identify the association between university students' consumption of junk food and their levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. Results: There were (N = 509), 66% females and 34% males, mean age was (M = 18.1 ± .5) years participated in this study. Daily consumption of junk food was significantly linked to stress (odds ratio [OR], 4.5; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.5-8.3), anxiety (OR, 11.1; 95% CI, 6.2-20.1), and depression (OR, 7.9; 95% CI, 4.5-13.9). Conclusions: This is the first thorough study conducted in Egypt to examine the relationship between stress, anxiety, and depression, and junk food consumption among undergraduates at a private Egyptian university. Many college students struggle emotionally, and those who are emotionally troubled are more likely to participate in eating unhealthy food. Our research will be used to inform regional policies on adolescent nutrition and to create preventative strategies.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the impact of environmental influences on Greek preadolescents' junk food consumption. A cross-sectional study, was conducted among 1718 preadolescents (mean (standard deviation(SD)) age: 11.2(0.8) years old; 54% girls) and their parents, during the school years 2014-2016. Parental and child characteristics were collected anonymously, through self-administered and validated questionnaires. Among others, junk food consumption was recorded, classifying children as low, moderate, and high consumers. The majority of the preadolescents were classified as at least moderate junk food consumers, while almost 3/10 children were classified as high junk food consumers. A significantly lower junk food consumption was observed among preadolescents with a healthier family environment, consisting of normal-weight parents who consume junk foods less frequently, prefer home-cooked meals and adhere more to the Mediterranean diet, while more frequent family meals were also associated with lower junk food consumption. In addition, influence from teachers and participation in extracurricular sports activities were significantly associated with lower junk food consumption, while advertisements were found to have a significant negative impact on preadolescents' eating habits. Notwithstanding, peers were not found to influence their dietary choices in terms of junk food consumption. Both parents and teachers seem to be positive influencers on preadolescents' low junk food consumption. The detrimental role of advertisements on junk food consumption is reconfirmed, while peers' influence is not significant on junk food consumption. The need for urgent public health initiatives for the promotion of healthy dietary habits among preadolescents is warranted.

Objectives: The study was aimed at evaluating the association between junk food consumption and BMI of adolescent girls along with the menstrual abnormalities and to compare it with controls. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 200 girls between 13 - 19 years of age at Bahria International Hospital, Lahore based on self-administered questionnaire from July 2021 to September 2021. The total subjects were divided in two groups Viz; Group-A which comprised of 100 girls with menstrual abnormalities and Group-B included 100 girls without menstrual problem (control group). The data recorded on the questionnaire about the demographic profile, anthropometric measurements, menstrual cycle characteristics, and dietary habits was subjected to statistical analysis using SPSS version 20 and Chi-Square was used to test quantitative significance between the two groups. Results: The mean age of participants was 17.02±1.76 years. It was observed that 40% girls had irregular menstrual cycle, 56% girls were suffering from dysmenorrhea and almost all girls of Group-I were suffering from premenstrual dysfunctions. The current study found a non-significant difference between two groups with regard to body mass index (P≥0.05). Significant difference was observed between two groups (P ≤ 0.05) as junk food consumption was high in Group-A as compared to Group-B. However, no significant difference was found between Group-A and B in relation to the consumption of salty snacks and frozen meat items (P≥0.05). Conclusion: The results suggested that junk food consumption affects menstrual cycle negatively however more studies are needed to confirm the association of BMI, consumption of salty snacks and frozen meat items with menstrual abnormalities.

In 2014, the Navajo Nation Healthy Diné Nation Act (HDNA) was enacted and permanently approved in 2020; HDNA places a 2% surtax on unhealthy foods and beverages, while other 2014 legislation exempted healthy food items from the 6% regular sales tax. Little is known about Navajo Nation store manager/owner perspectives toward the HDNA and how best to support stores to implement the legislation. Purposive sampling was used to ensure a balanced sample of correct HDNA implementers, incorrect HDNA implementers, and stores which made healthy store changes over the past 6 years. Three community-based interviewers collected surveys by phone or in-person. Frequency of closed-ended questions was quantified, and open-ended responses were coded using thematic analysis. Of 29 identified sample stores, 20 were interviewed to reach saturation. Eleven of 20 stores made changes improving their healthy food environments. Barriers included lack of equipment (6/20) and low consumer demand (5/20). Facilitators included consumer awareness and increased produce supply options (5/20). Sixteen of 20 stores supported HDNA continuation. Facilitators to HDNA implementation included orientation and informational materials (6/20) and promotion of tax-free items (5/20). Barriers included confusion about the tax (6/20) and tax exemption (5/20). Suggestions for support included printed materials (6/20) and store training (5/20). HDNA benefits included greater awareness of healthy choices among staff (7/20) and customer-community members (2/20). Most managers and owners expressed receiving support for healthy store changes and HDNA, but also identified a need for added resources and support. Findings inform legislative action to promote timely and appropriate uptake of HDNA, and support equitable, healthy food systems.

Background: Acne vulgaris (AV) is among the common skin diseases for which patients refer to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Aims and Objectives: To investigate the approaches to CAM methods and factors believed to increase the disease in 1,571 AV patients. Materials and Methods: The sociodemographic characteristics of the patients and disease severity according to the Food and Drug Administration criteria were recorded. The Cardiff Acne Disability Index (CADI) was used to assess the impact of acne on the patient's life and the history of CAM use was noted. The patients also listed the factors that they thought worsened their disease and reported their gluten-free diet experiences. Results: Of all the patients, 74.41% had a history of using CAM methods. CAM use was significantly higher in women, patients with severe AV, those with a higher CADI score and non-smokers. As a CAM method, 66.37% of the patients reported having used lemon juice. The respondents most frequently applied CAM methods before consulting a physician (43.94%), for a duration of 0-2 weeks (38.97%). They learned about CAM methods on the internet (56.24%) and considered CAM methods to be natural (41.86%). The patients thought that food (78.55%) and stress (17.06%) worsened their disease. They considered that the most common type of food that exacerbated their symptoms was junk food (63.84%) and a gluten-free diet did not provide any benefit in relieving AV (50%). Conclusion: Physicians need to ask patients about their CAM use in order to be able to guide them appropriately concerning treatments and applications with a high level of evidence.

Purpose: This study was carried out to study the effect of anethole rich fraction on the Diabetic Nephropathy (DN) rats, and explore the mechanisms. Methods: Male wistar rats were grouped into 4 (n = 6 per group): Control, junk food fed DN induced rats, low dose and high dose groups. DN was induced by oral junk food feeding. They were monitored for blood glucose levels and urine protein content at regular intervals. At the end of the study, the biological and hematological parameters were measured. Pancreatic and kidney viscera were taken to observe histopathological changes. Results: Both the doses of anethole rich fraction could drastically lower blood glucose levels, Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL), Glycated Serum Protein (GSP), Total Cholesterol (TC), Triglycerides (TG) (P < 0.01), Malondialdehyde (MDA) level (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05), increases insulin level (P < 0.01), High Density Lipoproteins (HDL), Glutathione Reductase (GSH) and Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05 or P > 0.05). Both doses of anethole rich fraction also improved the pathological changes of kidney and pancreatic tissues in DN rats (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05 or P > 0.05). Conclusions: Hence it can be hypothesized that the high dose of anethole rich fraction (100 mg/kg) could reach the intervention effect and could ameliorate renal damage in DN rats by improving the renal functions, oxidative stress levels, glycometabolism and pathological changes of pancreas and kidney.

Background. Unhealthy food is an important element in the development of diseases of civilisation. The aim of this study was to determine how sex, age, body mass index, smoking and olfactory efficiency influence the consumption of such foods. Methods. A total of 283 people living in the Silesian Voivodeship in Poland took part in the study. They were aged 18−82. An interview and olfactory tests were conducted together with assessments of food preferences from 25 types of food products. The extent to which sex, age, body mass index, tobacco addiction and sense of smell influence unhealthy food consumption was assessed. Results. Using the VARIMAX factor analysis, a coherent group of 'unhealthy food with a strong flavour' products was selected: crisps, salty snacks, fast food, sugary carbonated drinks and sour products. Unhealthy food was liked more by people who were younger (B = −0.04; PU = −0.05, −0.03; t = −7.43, eta2 = 0.17; p < 0.001) and who had a higher BMI (B = 0.03; PU ≤ 0.01, 0.06; t = 1.92, eta2 = 0.01; p = 0.056). The efficiency of the sense of smell does not play a significant role in the preference for the 'unhealthy food' group as a whole. The analysis of each type of unhealthy food separately showed that young people liked crisps, salty snacks, fast food and sugary carbonated drinks more, men liked fast food and sugary carbonated drinks more than women, and people with a good sense of smell liked sour products. Conclusion. According to the food preferences stated, dietary education should be targeted at young people, especially young men, to prevent the development of overweight and obesity.

Regular intake of ready-to-eat meals is related to obesity and several noninfectious illnesses, such as cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, diabetes mellitus (DM), and tumors. Processed foods contain high calories and are often enhanced with excess refined sugar, saturated and trans fat, Na+ andphosphate-containing taste enhancers, and preservatives. Studies showed that monosodium glutamate (MSG) induces raised echelons of oxidative stress, and excessive hepatic lipogenesis is concomitant to obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Likewise, more than standard salt intake adversely affects the cardiovascular system, renal system, and central nervous system (CNS), especially the brain. Globally, excessive utilization of phosphate-containing preservatives and additives contributes unswervingly to excessive phosphate intake through food. In addition, communities and even health experts, including medical doctors, are not well-informed about the adverse effects of phosphate preservatives on human health. Dietary phosphate excess often leads to phosphate toxicity, ultimately potentiating kidney disease development. The mechanisms involved in phosphate-related adverse effects are not explainable. Study reports suggested that high blood level of phosphate causes vascular ossification through the deposition of Ca2+ and substantially alters fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) and calcitriol.

Recent data show that young people, mainly due to the pressure of some risk factors or due to disrupted interpersonal relationships, utilise greater reward value and display greater sensitivity to the reinforcing properties of "pleasurable stimuli", specifically in those situations in which an enhanced dopamine release is present. Alcoholic beverages, foods rich in sugar and fat, and illicit drug use are pleasurable feelings associated with rewards. Research shows that there is a link between substance abuse and obesity in brain functioning. Still, alcohol excess is central in leading to obesity and obesity-related morbidities, such as hepatic steatosis, mainly when associated with illicit drug dependence and negative eating behaviours in young people. It is ascertained that long-term drinking causes mental damage, similarly to drug abuse, but also affects liver function. Indeed, beyond the pharmacokinetic interactions of alcohol with drugs, occurring in the liver due to the same metabolic enzymes, there are also pharmacodynamic interactions of both substances in the CNS. To complicate matters, an important noxious effect of junk foods consists of inducing obesity and obesity-related NAFLD. In this review, we focus on some key mechanisms underlying the impact of these addictions on the liver, as well as those on the CNS.
