Mulberry leaves (MLs) are reported to have beneficial effects in modulating obesity in male models. However, the impact of different types of mulberry leaf extracts (MLEs) on female models, specifically their influence on adipocytes, gut microbiota, and related metabolic markers, remains poorly understood. In this study, we observed a strong correlation between the total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant and adipocyte modulation effects of water extracted MLEs. HB-W (water-extracted baiyuwang) and HY-W (water-extracted Yueshen) demonstrated remarkable inhibition effects on adipocytes in 3 T3-L1 adipocytes model. Moreover, MLEs effectively reduced the levels of triglycerides (TG), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), and total cholesterol (T-CHO) in adipocytes in vitro. In vivo experiments conducted on female mice with high fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity revealed the anti-obesity effects of HB-W and HY-W, leading to a significant decrease in weight gain rates and notable influence on the ratios of adipose tissue, particularly white adipose tissue (WAT). Gene expression analysis demonstrated the up-regulation of WAT-related genes (Pla2g2a and Plac8) by HB-W, while HY-W supplementation showed beneficial effects on the regulation of blood sugar-related genes. Furthermore, both HB-W and HY-W exhibited modulatory effects on obesity-related gut microbiota (Firmicutes-to-Bacteroidetes ratio) and short chain fatty acid (SCFA) contents. Importantly, they also mitigated abnormalities in liver function and uncoupling protein 1 (UPC1) expression. Overall, our findings underscore the anti-obesity effects of MLEs in female rats with high-fat diet-induced obesity.

Electroanalytical chemistry is a metrological analysis technique that provides information feedback by measuring the voltammetric signal that changes when a molecule is involved in an electrochemical reaction. There is variability in the type and content of electrochemically active substances among different plants, and the signal differences presented by such differences in electrochemical reactions can be used for plant identification and physiological monitoring. This work used electroanalytical chemistry to monitor the growth of three Acer spp. This work explores the feasibility of the electrochemical analysis technique for the physiological monitoring of highly differentiated plants within the genus and further validates the technique. Changes in the electrochemical fingerprints of A. cinnamomifolium, A. sinopurpurascens and A. palmatum 'Matsumurae' were recorded during the one-year developmental cycle. The results show that the differences in the electrochemical fingerprint profiles of Acer spp. can be used to distinguish different species and identify the growth status in each season. This work also concludes with an identification flowchart based on electrochemical fingerprinting.

In recent years, novel strategies to control insects have been based on protease inhibitors (PIs). In this regard, molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations have been extensively used to investigate insect gut proteases and the interactions of PIs for the development of resistance against insects. We, herein, report an in silico study of (disodium 5'-inosinate and petunidin 3-glucoside), (calcium 5'-guanylate and chlorogenic acid), chlorogenic acid alone, (kaempferol-3,7-di-O-glucoside with hyperoside and delphinidin 3-glucoside), and (myricetin 3'-glucoside and hyperoside) as potential inhibitors of acetylcholinesterase receptors, actin, α-tubulin, arginine kinase, and histone receptor III subtypes, respectively. The study demonstrated that the inhibitors are capable of forming stable complexes with the corresponding proteins while also showing great potential for inhibitory activity in the proposed protein-inhibitor combinations.

With the increase in the digitization efforts of herbarium collections worldwide, dataset repositories such as iDigBio and GBIF now have hundreds of thousands of herbarium sheet images ready for exploration. Although this serves as a new source of plant leaves data, herbarium datasets have an inherent challenge to deal with the sheets containing other non-plant objects such as color charts, barcodes, and labels. Even for the plant part itself, a combination of different overlapping, damaged, and intact individual leaves exist together with other plant organs such as stems and fruits, which increases the complexity of leaf trait extraction and analysis. Focusing on segmentation and trait extraction on individual intact herbarium leaves, this study proposes a pipeline consisting of deep learning semantic segmentation model (DeepLabv3+), connected component analysis, and a single-leaf classifier trained on binary images to automate the extraction of an intact individual leaf with phenotypic traits. The proposed method achieved a higher F1-score for both the in-house dataset (96%) and on a publicly available herbarium dataset (93%) compared to object detection-based approaches including Faster R-CNN and YOLOv5. Furthermore, using the proposed approach, the phenotypic measurements extracted from the segmented individual leaves were closer to the ground truth measurements, which suggests the importance of the segmentation process in handling background noise. Compared to the object detection-based approaches, the proposed method showed a promising direction toward an autonomous tool for the extraction of individual leaves together with their trait data directly from herbarium specimen images.

The main goal of this study was to establish the chemical profile of Osage orange (Maclura pomifera) leaf extracts, obtained by conventional maceration technique, and to examine its antimicrobial activity. The identification and quantification of the extract compounds were done using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography, with a diode array detector coupled with triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry techniques. Thirty-one polyphenolic compounds were detected and identified in the ethanolic extracts, whereby 5-O-caffeoylquinic acid was found to be the dominant compound. Among other compounds, pentacosane and palmitic acid were the most abundant compounds in the dichloromethane extract. The preliminary antimicrobial activity screening shows that Gram-positive bacteria tend to be more sensitive to the investigated extracts. The highest antimicrobial activity was determined against Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 19433 and Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 35152. From these results, Osage orange leaves can be considered as plant material with significant antimicrobial properties.

This study evaluated the effect of Morus nigra leaf extract, with or without supplementation, on morphology, activation and DNA damage of preantral follicles cultured within sheep ovarian tissue. Ovaries were collected and divided into fragments, being one fixed for histological and Terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT) mediated dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) analysis (fresh control). The remaining fragments were cultured for 7 days in alpha minimum essential media (α-MEM) supplemented with bovine serum albumin (BSA), insulin, transferrin, selenium, glutamine, hypoxanthine and ascorbic acid (α-MEM+; control medium) or into medium composed of M. nigra extract without supplements (0.1; 0.2 or 0.4mg/mL) or supplemented with the same substances described above for α-MEM+ (MN 0.1+; 0.2+ or 0.4+mg/mL). Then, tissues were destined to histological and TUNEL analysis. The α-MEM+ treatment had more morphologically normal follicles than all M. nigra extract treatments. However, α-MEM+ treatment also showed signs of atresia because the percentage of TUNEL positive cells was similar in α-MEM+ and in 0.1mg/mL M. nigra without and with supplements. Moreover, a reduction in the primordial follicles and an increase in the growing ones were observed in all treatments, except 0.2mg/mL M. nigra. In conclusion, the follicles cultured at 0.1mg/mL M. nigra extract were in good condition and able to continue their development, as demonstrated by the same rates of DNA damage and follicular activation as the control medium.(AU)


Este estudo avaliou o efeito do extrato das folhas de Morus nigra, com ou sem suplementos, sobre a morfologia, a ativação e o dano ao DNA de folículos pré-antrais cultivados inclusos em tecido ovariano. Os ovários foram coletados e divididos em fragmentos, sendo um fixado para análise histológica e ensaio de marcação de terminações dUTP mediada por desoxinucleotidil transferase terminal (TUNEL) (controle fresco). Os fragmentos restantes foram cultivados durante 7 dias em meio essencial mínimo alfa (α-MEM) suplementado com albumina sérica bovina (BSA), insulina, transferrina, selênio, glutamina, hipoxantina e ácido ascorbico (α-MEM+; meio controle) ou em meio composto de extrato de M. nigra sem suplementos (0,1; 0,2 or 0,4mg/mL) ou suplementado com as mesmas substâncias descritas para α-MEM+ (MN 0,1+; 0,2+ or 0,4+mg/mL). Então, os tecidos foram destinados à análise histológica e TUNEL. O tratamento do α-MEM+ apresentou mais folículos morfologicamente normais que todos os tratamentos do extrato de M. nigra. No entanto, o tratamento com α-MEM+ também mostrou sinais de atresia, pois a porcentagem de células TUNEL positivas foi semelhante em α-MEM+ e em 0,1mg/mL M. nigra sem e com suplementos. Além disso, observou-se uma redução nos folículos primordiais e um aumento nos folículos em crescimento em todos os tratamentos, exceto 0,2mg/mL M. nigra. Em conclusão, os folículos cultivados com 0,1mg/mL de extrato de M. nigra estavam em boas condições e aptos a continuar seu desenvolvimento, como demonstrado pelas taxas de dano ao DNA e de ativação folicular semelhantes ao meio controle.(AU)

The main aim of this study is to investigate Aganonerion polymorphum leaf-ethyl acetate extract (APL-EAE) and its inhibiting effect for steel in ethanol fuel blend. The immersion test, electrochemical and surface analysis techniques were successfully carried out in this research. Scanning electron microscope images indicated that the ethanol fuel blend induced pitting corrosion of steel. Remarkably, the surface of the sample containing 1000 ppm APL-EAE is smoother than the others submerged in different conditions. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy result shows that APL-EAE has formed a good protective layer, preventing corrosive factors from hitting the steel surface. The potentiodynamic polarization data argue that the corrosion inhibition efficiency was strengthened with the increase of APL-EAE concentration. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy demonstrated less intensity of Fe peaks, higher intensity of C1s peak and the appearance of organic peaks (N1s, P2p, O1s) from specimens with and without APL-EAE addition. Therefore, the results suggest the formation of the protective film on steel surface and affirm that APL-EAE has served as an effective corrosion inhibitor for steel in ethanol fuel blend.

Butia purpurascens is an endemic and threatened palm tree species that occurs in open areas of the Brazilian Cerrado, predominantly in southwestern Goiás. The leaves of this palm tree are harvested by local people to fabricate brooms. This study evaluated changes in vegetative and reproductive phenology in two different natural populations of this palm tree: one population with leaf harvesting and another non-harvested population. Twenty plants were monitored in each area for 23 months. The phenophases were related to the temperature and precipitation averages for a 30-year period. Leaf sprouting occurred throughout the year, with a slight reduction in periods of low temperatures and low rainfall. The first spathes emerged in March and flowering began during the dry season (June), continuing until January of the following year, concurrent with the period of most intense fruiting. Flowering and fruiting appear to be triggered by periods of drought, which are commonly observed in the Cerrado. The harvested sites produced significantly fewer leaves, spathes, inflorescences and infructescences than the non-harvested sites. Thus, the supply of resources to the local fauna is possibly reduced in sites under leaf exploitation, which in the long term can represent damage to the palm tree population’s structure and dynamics. Other socioeconomic and ecological studies about the effects of leaf harvesting in B. purpurascens are necessary to enable strategies for sustainable use, devise management alternatives and conserve this threatened palm species.


Butia purpurascens é uma palmeira endêmica e ameaçada que ocorre em áreas de cerrado sentido restrito do sudoeste goiano e tem suas folhas extraídas pela população local para a confecção de vassouras. O estudo avaliou variações na fenologia vegetativa e reprodutiva em duas populações naturais da palmeira em Jataí, GO: uma área sem extração e outra com extrativismo foliar. Vinte indivíduos foram monitorados em cada área durante 23 meses. As fenofases foram relacionadas às medias de temperatura e precipitação por um período de 30 anos. O brotamento foliar ocorreu ao longo de todo o ano, embora tenha reduzido nos períodos de menor temperatura e pluviosidade. A emissão das primeiras espatas se iniciou em março e a floração teve início durante a estação seca (junho), perdurando até janeiro do ano seguinte, concomitante ao período de intensa frutificação. Floração e frutificação parecem ser desencadeadas por períodos de estiagem, comum no Cerrado brasileiro. Áreas com extração produziram número significativamente menor de folhas, espatas, inflorescências e infrutescências do que áreas sem extração. Assim, a oferta de recursos para a fauna local é reduzida em áreas sob extrativismo, o que pode prejudicar a estrutura e a dinâmica populacional da palmeira, em longo prazo. Outros estudos sócio-econômicas e ecológicos sobre os efeitos da extração foliar em B. purpurascens são necessários para permitir estratégias de exploração sustentável, alternativas de manejo e a conservação dessa espécie atualmente ameaçada.
