BACKGROUND: The genus Usnea (Parmeliaceae; lichenized Ascomycetes) is pale grayish-green fruticose lichens which grow as leafless mini-shrubs and comprise about 360 species. Most of the Usnea species are edible and is utilized in preparation of traditional foods as well as in medicines to combat wide range of ailments. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this work was to quantify usnic acid in three Usnea spp. [Usnea ghattensis (UG), Usnea orientalis (UO) and Usnea undulata (UU)] using HPTLC-MS and chemical profiling of acetone extracts using UPLC-QTof-MSE resulted in the identification of sixteen compounds based on their MS/MS fragmentation patterns. METHODS: Hyphenated techniques, HPTLC-MS and UPLC-QTof-MSE have been proposed to quantify usnic acid and analysis of metabolites in the crude extracts qualitatively. This method allowed tentative characterization of metabolites from Usnea spp. RESULTS: The quantification study showed the excellent linearity of the usnic acid at 0.25-1 µg/band with a correlation coefficient r  2>0.99, and LOD, LOQ was found to be 51.7 and 156.6 ng/band, respectively. Further, UPLC-QTof-MSE analysis of crude extract led identification of lichen substances through their exact molecular masses and MS/MS fragmentation studies. CONCLUSIONS: The present study summarizes HPTLC method for quantification of usnic acid in three different Usnea spp. Along with two herbal formulations containing Usnea spp. as the ingredient and developed method was validated as per the ICH guidelines and further UPLC-QTof-MSE analysis provides characterization of the sixteen different secondary metabolites based on their mass fragmentation studies. HIGHLIGHTS: Rapid HPTLC method for quantification of usnic acid in three different Usnea spp. along with two herbal formulations and metabolite profiling using UPLC-QTof-MSE.

With an emphasis on memory-type approaches, this study presents a class of estimators specifically designed for estimating population variation in simple random sampling (SRS). The term 'memory-type' pertaining to the use of exponentially weighted moving averages (EWMA) statistic for the estimation, which utilizes the current and past information in temporal surveys. The study provides expressions for the bias and mean square error (MSE) of these estimators and establishes conditions under which their efficiency represses the conventional and other memory-type estimators. The theoretical findings are reinforced through a comprehensive simulation study conducted on hypothetically sampled populations. Additionally, the effectiveness of the proposed estimators is demonstrated utilizing real-life population data. The findings of simulation and real data application show the superiority of the proposed memory type estimator over the existing usual and memory type estimators.

The primary purpose of this article is to examine the issue of estimating the finite population distribution function from auxiliary information, such as population mean and rank of the auxiliary variables, that are already known. In order to better estimate the distribution function (DF) of a finite population, two improved estimators are developed. The bias and mean squared error of the suggested and existing estimators are derived up to the first order of approximation. To improve the efficiency of an estimators, we compare the suggested estimators with existing counterpart. Based on the numerical outcomes, it is to be noted that the suggested classes of estimators perform well using six actual data sets. The strength and generalization of the suggested estimators are also verified using a simulation analysis. Based on the result of actual data sets and a simulation study, we observe that the suggested estimator outperforms as compared to all existing estimators which is compared in this study.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to compare and analyze the biomechanical effect and the displacement trend of RME and MSE on the maxillofacial complex under different palatal shapes by using finite element analysis. METHODS: The three-dimensional model of maxillofacial complex was obtained from a computed tomography image of a person with a normal palate. Then, we modified the shape of the palate to obtain the model with a high palate. Additionally, two expander devices were considered. MSE and RME were created and four models were made: Model 1: Normal-palate craniomaxillofacial complex with RME expander; Model 2: Normal-palate craniomaxillofacial complex with MSE expander; Model 3: High-palate craniomaxillofacial complex with RME expander; Model 4: High-palate craniomaxillofacial complex with MSE expander. Then, lateral forced displacement was applied and the analysis results were obtained. RESULTS: The lateral displacement of the palatal suture of Model 3 is greater than that of Model 1, and the maxilla has more rotation. The crown/root ratio of Model 1 is significantly greater than that of the other three groups. Compared with Model 1, Model 3 has greater stress concentration in the superstructure of the craniomaxillofacial complex. Both of them have greater stress in the anchorage area than Model 2 and Model 4. CONCLUSION: Different shapes of the palate interfere with the effects of RME and MSE, and its influence on the stress distribution and displacement of the craniomaxillary complex when using RME is greater than MSE. The lateral displacement of the palatal suture of MSE is significantly larger than that of RME. It is more prone to tipping movement of the anchor teeth using RME under normal palate, and MSE may manage the vertical control better due to the smaller crown/root ratio than RME and intrusive movement of molars.

BACKGROUND: Oral cavity cancer is a growing concern, especially in developing countries like India, due to risk factors such as tobacco use, alcohol consumption, nutritional deficiencies, and spicy food intake. Early detection through screening and Mouth Self-examination (MSE) can significantly improve outcomes, but limited awareness and pain in advanced stages lead to delayed detection. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and practice of MSE among tobacco users in urban and rural populations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted involving tobacco users (smoking, smokeless, or both). An observational questionnaire-based approach was employed, with informed consent obtained from participants. A questionnaire in Hindi and English was used, consisting of demographic details and 13 close-ended questions. RESULTS: The analysis revealed that individuals from urban areas (71.9%) exhibited significantly higher awareness of Mouth self- examination (MSE) compared to those from rural areas (1.9%). Chi-square analysis demonstrated that urban residents exhibited significantly higher awareness, understanding, confidence, desire for information, and positive attitudes towards Mouth Self-Examination (MSE) compared to rural residents. Multivariate analysis showed that education had a consistent and substantial impact on both knowledge and practice scores. CONCLUSION: The study highlights substantial urban-rural disparities in mouth self- examination (MSE) awareness and attitudes, with urban residents demonstrating significantly higher levels. Targeted interventions and awareness campaigns are vital to bridge this gap and improve oral health practices, especially in rural areas.

Cinnamomum tamala leaf (CTL), also known as Indian bay leaf, is used all over the world for seasoning, flavoring, and medicinal purposes. These characteristics could be explained by the presence of several essential bioactive substances and lipid derivatives. In this work, rapid screening and identification of the chemical compounds in supercritical (SC)-CO2 extracts of CTL by use of UPLC-Q-TOF-MSE with a multivariate statistical analysis approach was established in both negative and positive mode. A total of 166 metabolites, including 66 monocarboxylic fatty acids, 52 dicarboxylic fatty acids, 27 fatty acid amides, and 21 cinnamic acid derivatives, were tentatively identified based on accurate mass and the mass spectrometric fragmentation pattern, out of which 142 compounds were common in all SC-CO2 extracts of CTL. Further, PCA and cluster hierarchical analysis clearly discriminated the chemical profile of analyzed extracts and allowed the selection of SC-CO2 extract rich in fatty acids, fatty acid amides, and other bioactive constituents. The result showed that the higher number of compounds was detected in CTL4 (300 bar/55 °C) extract than the other CTL extracts. The mono- and di-carboxylic fatty acids, fatty acid amides, and cinnamic acid derivatives were identified in CTL for the first time. UPLC-Q-TOF-MSE combined with chemometric analysis is a powerful method to rapidly screen the metabolite profiling to justify the quality of CTL as a flavoring agent and in functional foods.

This case report describes correction of maxillary constriction using a maxillary skeletal expander (MSE) in a 15-year-old female with a skeletal Class III pattern and asymmetry. The maxillary expansion device with four mini-implants was used to correct the constricted maxilla, bilateral crossbite of the posterior teeth, and crowding of the dentition. Comparison of cone-beam computed tomography scans before and after treatment showed that the majority of maxillary expansion was orthopedic, with minimal alveolar bone bending and tooth tipping. Fixed appliances were used to correct the crowding and malocclusion. Stable and satisfactory maxillary expansion was obtained by using MSE non-urgically.

Entropy measures are increasingly being used to analyze the structure of neural activity observed by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), with resting-state networks (RSNs) being of interest for their reproducible descriptions of the brain's functional architecture. Temporal correlations have shown a dichotomy among these networks: those that engage with the environment, known as extrinsic, which include the visual and sensorimotor networks; and those associated with executive control and self-referencing, known as intrinsic, which include the default mode network and the frontoparietal control network. While these inter-voxel temporal correlations enable the assessment of synchrony among the components of individual networks, entropic measures introduce an intra-voxel assessment that quantifies signal features encoded within each blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) time series. As a result, this framework offers insights into comprehending the representation and processing of information within fMRI signals. Multiscale entropy (MSE) has been proposed as a useful measure for characterizing the entropy of neural activity across different temporal scales. This measure of temporal entropy in BOLD data is dependent on the length of the time series; thus, high-quality data with fine-grained temporal resolution and a sufficient number of time frames is needed to improve entropy precision. We apply MSE to the Midnight Scan Club, a highly sampled and well-characterized publicly available dataset, to analyze the entropy distribution of RSNs and evaluate its ability to distinguish between different functional networks. Entropy profiles are compared across temporal scales and RSNs. Our results have shown that the spatial distribution of entropy at infra-slow frequencies (0.005-0.1 Hz) reproduces known parcellations of RSNs. We found a complexity hierarchy between intrinsic and extrinsic RSNs, with intrinsic networks robustly exhibiting higher entropy than extrinsic networks. Finally, we found new evidence that the topography of entropy in the posterior cerebellum exhibits high levels of entropy comparable to that of intrinsic RSNs.

BACKGROUND: As one of the four most valuable animal medicines, Fel Ursi, named Xiong Dan (XD) in China, has the effect of clearing heat, calming the liver, and brightening the eyes. However, due to the special source of XD and its high price, other animals' bile is often sold as XD or mixed with XD on the market, seriously affecting its clinical efficacy and consumers' rights and interests. In order to realize identification and adulteration analysis of XD, UHPLC-QTOF-MSE and multivariate statistical analysis were used to explore the differences in XD and six other animals' bile. METHODS: XD, pig gall (Zhu Dan, ZD), cow gall (Niu Dan, ND), rabbit gallbladder (Tu Dan, TD), duck gall (Yan Dan, YD), sheep gall (Yang Dan, YND), and chicken gall (Ji Dan, JD) were analyzed by UHPLC-QTOF-MSE, and the MS data, combined with multivariate analysis methods, were used to distinguish between them. Meanwhile, the potential chemical composition markers that contribute to their differences were further explored. RESULTS: The results showed that XD and six other animals' bile can be distinguished from each other obviously, with 27 ions with VIP > 1.0. We preliminarily identified 10 different bile acid-like components in XD and the other animals' bile with significant differences (p < 0.01) and VIP > 1.0, such as tauroursodeoxycholic acid, Glycohyodeoxycholic acid, and Glycodeoxycholic acid. CONCLUSIONS: The developed method was efficient and rapid in accurately distinguishing between XD and six other animals' bile. Based on the obtained chemical composition markers, it is beneficial to strengthen quality control for bile medicines.

PURPOSE: Investigate the most appropriate mathematical formula to objectively express upper eyelid contour symmetry. METHODS: 62 eyes of 31 patients were included in the study. The upper eyelid contour symmetry of the patients was classified subjectively (independent of MRD1) as poor, acceptable, and good by three oculoplastic specialists (senior, expert, and junior surgeon). Bézier curves of the upper lid contour were drawn with ImageJ software (NIH, Bethesda, MA, USA). Using the algorithms created by Author SKC in Spyder (Python 3.7.9.), the symmetry of the Bézier curves of the left eyelids were obtained according to the y-axis, and the mid-pupils of both eyes were superimposed. The lower curve moved vertically to the equal height of the other curve to equalize MRD1's. R2 (Coefficient of determination), RMSE (Root-mean-square error), MSE (Mean squared error), POC (Percentage of co-efficiency), and MAE (Mean absolute error) were calculated. We evaluated the correlation between these objective formulas and the subjective grading of three surgeons using Spearman's rho (ρ). RESULTS: The correlation coefficient of RMSE and MSE were the same for all surgeons grading. There was a strong correlation between the senior surgeon's subjective scoring (N; poor = 8, acceptable = 16, good = 8) and R2, RMSE, POC, MAE (ρ = 0.643, p < 0.001, ρ = -0.607, p < 0.001, ρ = 0.562, p < 0.001, ρ = -0.517, p < 0.001, respectively). We found a strong relationship between the expert surgeon's subjective scoring (N; poor = 9, acceptable = 13, good:10) and R2 (ρ = 0.611, p < 0.001), RMSE (ρ = -0.549, p < 0.001), POC (ρ = 0.511, p < 0.001), and MAE (ρ = -0.450, p < 0.05). We found a strong correlation between junior surgeon's subjective scoring (N; poor = 6, acceptable = 18, good = 8) and R2, RMSE, and POC (ρ: -0.517, p < 0.001; ρ: -0.470, p < 0.001; ρ: 0.521, p < 0.001; respectively) and moderate correlation between MAE (ρ:-0.394, p < 0.05). The highest correlation is observed with R2. CONCLUSIONS: RMSE, MSE, POC, MAE, and especially R2, may quantitatively express upper eyelid contour symmetry, comparable with the oculoplastic surgeon. The highest correlation was observed between the senior surgeon and R2, and decreases with the experience of the surgeon.

Improvement in the estimation of population mean has been an area of interest in sampling theory. So many estimators have been suggested for elevated estimation of the population mean in stratified random sampling, but there is still a gap for more closely estimating the population mean. In this paper, the authors propose a ratio-product-cum-exponential-cum-logarithmic type estimator for the enhanced estimation of population mean by implying one auxiliary variable in stratified random sampling using conventional ratio, exponential ratio, and logarithmic ratio type estimators. The suggested estimator is a generalization of ratio, exponential ratio, and logarithmic ratio type estimators, and therefore these are special cases of the proposed estimator. The proposed estimator's bias and MSE are determined and compared with those of influential estimators, with the linear cost function being used to investigate and compare alternatives. Use Cramer's rule to determine the optimal value of the proposed estimator. The proposed estimator is more effective than other existing estimators, according to theoretical observations. For various applications, we suggest using a proposed estimator with the minimal MSE, which is verified by a numerical example, to have practical applicability of theoretical conclusions in real life.

Small bowel tumors are relatively rare, representing only around 5% of all gastrointestinal neoplasms, with a progressively increasing incidence. Currently, there are no established guidelines for diagnostic approaches, screening procedures, or management strategies for small bowel tumors. We present here the case of a patient with a rare type of metastatic tumor of the small bowel originating from primary lung adenocarcinoma who presented with abdominal pain, severe iron-deficiency anemia, and melena. The initial investigations, gastroscopy and colonoscopy, failed to identify the bleeding source. The obscure bleeding source and diagnosis were achieved through power motorized spiral enteroscopy (MSE), which allowed the visualization and biopsy of the tumor. Histopathological examination established the presence of a poorly differentiated non-mucinous adenocarcinoma originating from the lung. This case is reported to provide evidence of the efficiency of MSE in the diagnosis of small bowel tumors, with the method providing higher insertion depth in a reduced amount of time.

Fufang Yinhua Jiedu granules (FYJG) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) compound formulae preparation comprising ten herbal drugs, which has been widely used for the treatment of influenza with wind-heat type and upper respiratory tract infections. However, the phytochemical constituents of FYJG have rarely been reported, and its constituent composition still needs to be elucidated. The complexity of the natural ingredients of TCMs and the diversity of preparations are the major obstacles to fully characterizing their constituents. In this study, an innovative and intelligent analysis strategy was built to comprehensively characterize the constituents of FYJG and assign source attribution to all components. Firstly, a simple and highly efficient ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-QTOF MSE) method was established to analyze the FYJG and ten single herbs. High-accuracy MS/MS data were acquired under two collision energies using high-definition MSE in the negative and positive modes. Secondly, a multistage intelligent data annotation strategy was developed and used to rapidly screen out and identify the compounds of FYJG, which was integrated with various online software and data processing platforms. The in-house chemical library of 2949 compounds was created and operated in the UNIFI software to enable automatic peak annotation of the MSE data. Then, the acquired MS data were processed by MS-DIAL, and a feature-based molecular networking (FBMN) was constructed on the Global Natural Product Social Molecular Networking (GNPS) to infer potential compositions of FYJG by rapidly classifying and visualizing. It was simultaneously using the MZmine software to recognize the source attribution of ingredients. On this basis, the unique chemical categories and characteristics of herbaceous plant species are utilized further to verify the accuracy of the source attribution of multi-components. This comprehensive analysis successfully identified or tentatively characterized 279 compounds in FYJG, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, coumarins, saponins, alkaloids, lignans, and phenylethanoids. Notably, twelve indole alkaloids and four organic acids from Isatidis Folium were characterized in this formula for the first time. This study demonstrates a potential superiority to identify compounds in complex TCM formulas using high-definition MSE and computer software-assisted structural analysis tools, which can obtain high-quality MS/MS spectra, effectively distinguish isomers, and improve the coverage of trace components. This study elucidates the various components and sources of FYJG and provides a theoretical basis for its further clinical development and application.

The main objective of the current study is to suggest an enhanced family of log ratio-exponential type estimators for population distribution function (DF) using auxiliary information under stratified random sampling. Putting different choices in our suggested generalized class of estimators, we found some Specific estimators. The bias and MSE expressions of the estimators have been approximated up to the first order. By using the actual and simulated data sets, we measured the performance of estimators. Based on the results, the suggested estimators for DF show better performance as compared to the preliminary estimators considered here. The suggested estimators have a advanced efficiency than the other estimators examined with the estimators F‾ˆlogPR(st)2, and F‾ˆlogPR(st)4 for both the actual and simulated data sets. The magnitude of the improvement in efficiency is noteworthy, indicating the superiority of the proposed estimators in terms of MSE.

In various applications, multiscale entropy (MSE) is often used as a feature to characterize the complexity of the signals in order to classify them. It consists of estimating the sample entropies (SEs) of the signal under study and its coarse-grained (CG) versions, where the CG process amounts to (1) filtering the signal with an average filter whose order is the scale and (2) decimating the filter output by a factor equal to the scale. In this paper, we propose to derive a new variant of the MSE. Its novelty stands in the way to get the sequences at different scales by avoiding distortions during the decimation step. To this end, a linear-phase or null-phase low-pass filter whose cutoff frequency is well suited to the scale is used. Interpretations on how the MSE behaves and illustrations with a sum of sinusoids, as well as white and pink noises, are given. Then, an application to detect attentional tunneling is presented. It shows the benefit of the new approach in terms of p value when one aims at differentiating the set of MSEs obtained in the attentional tunneling state from the set of MSEs obtained in the nominal state. It should be noted that CG versions can be replaced not only for the MSE but also for other variants.

Various authors have put their sincere efforts into proposing ratio estimators for estimating the population's mean and variance under different situations and sampling methods. But the problem arises when data is unstable, imprecise, ambiguous, incomplete and vague. In such situations, classical methods of estimation do not yield precise results, as these methods are not meant for such problems. Given this difficulty, Neutrosophic statistics are the only alternative as it deals with indeterminacy. So in this study, we have proposed a generalized Neutrosophic robust ratio type estimator which can be used to provide good results in such situations, as well as in the case of the presence of outliers. For the evaluation point of view, we have made use of real data set and simulation study to check the efficacy of our suggested estimators over the mentioned existed estimators.

Estimation of population mean is a determined subject issue in sampling surveys and many efforts have been paid by various researchers to enhance the precision of the estimates by utilizing the correlated auxiliary information. In connection with this, we suggest an improved exponential ratio-cum-ratio estimator using transformed auxiliary variables under ranked set sampling scheme. Theoretical comparison between estimators is made in terms of mean square errors (MSEs), percentage relative efficiencies (PREs), and percentage relative root mean squared error (PRRMSE). The numerical expression for the bias and MSE of the suggested estimator is derived up to first order of approximation. Based on the results of actual data sets and a simulation study, it is found that the suggested estimator perform well as compared to its existing counterparts.

The hazel allergen Cor a 1 is a PR-10 protein, closely related to the major birch pollen allergen Bet v 1. Hazel allergies are caused by cross-reactive IgE antibodies originally directed against Bet v 1. Despite the importance of PR-10 proteins in allergy development, their function and localization in the plant remain largely elusive. Therefore, the presence of Cor a 1 mRNA and proteins was investigated in different tissues, i.e., the female flower, immature and mature nuts, catkins, and pollen. Four yet unknown Cor a 1 isoallergens, i.e., Cor a 1.0501-1.0801, and one new Cor a 1.03 variant were discovered and characterized. Depending on the isoallergen, the occurrence and level of mRNA expression varied in different tissues, suggesting different functions. Interestingly, Cor a 1.04 previously thought to be only present in nuts, was also detected in catkins and pollen. The corresponding Cor a 1 genes were expressed in Escherichia coli. The purified proteins were analysed by CD and NMR spectroscopy. Immunoblots and ELISAs to determine their allergenic potential showed that the new proteins reacted positively with sera from patients allergic to birch, hazel and elder pollen and were recognized as novel isoallergens/variants by the WHO/IUIS Allergen Nomenclature Sub-Committee.

(1) Objective: This scoping review evaluates the effects of miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion (MARPE) on different regions of the upper airway in adult patients and investigates various methods of measurement. (2) Methods: The search encompassed Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Scopus and Web of Science. This review was conducted following the PRISMA_ScR guidelines, and the inclusion criteria for examined studies were chosen in accordance with the PICOS framework. (3) Results: Seven studies were included in this review, comprising four retrospective studies, one prospective and two case reports. All studies involved the use of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) for measurements of the areas of interest. The percentage of increase in the volume of the nasal cavity varied between 31% and 9.9%, depending on the study. Volumetric variations in the nasopharynx were reported as increases between T0 (before expansion) and T1 (immediately after expansion) of 6.4%, 20.7% and 14.1%. All studies considered T0 before expansion and T1 immediately after expansion. Only one study evaluated remote follow-up to assess if the results were maintained after one year. (4) Conclusions: MARPE appears to lead to a statistically significant increase in the upper airway, especially in the nasal cavity and nasopharynx immediately after expansion. However, further prospective and retrospective trails with long-term controls are required to verify the effects of MARPE on the upper airway.

In this study, the addition of mango seed extract (MSE) in goat meatballs was assessed. The efficacy of three different levels of MSE extract, namely T1 = (2.5 mL/100 g of meat emulsion v/w), T2 = (5.0 mL/100 g of meat emulsion v/w), T3 = (7.5 mL/100 g of meat emulsion v/w), and T0 (control without mango seed extract), was conducted for evaluation of changes in water activity (aW), pH, total phenolic compounds, DPPH, peroxide value, TBARS, microbial quality, and sensory attributes of the goat meatballs stored at refrigerated temperature (4 ± 1 °C). Incorporation of the mango seed extract T3 (7.5 mL/100 g) showed that it can potentially better maintain change in pH and water activity. Total phenolic and DPPH activity decreased significantly (P0.05) among all samples throughout storage; however, the highest value was noted for T3 among all samples. The MSE-added goat meatballs (T3) group had lower significant (p < 0.05) peroxide values than the other samples. The T3 sample added with MSE exhibited significant (p < 0.05) lower TBRAS values as compared to other treatments. Comparatively lower microbial proliferation and better sensory attributes were maintained among the treated groups during the entire storage time. The results show that the inclusion of MSE extract T3 (7.5 mL/100 g) is a promising natural antioxidant that can maintain a better quality of goat meatballs at refrigerated temperature (4 ± 1 °C) under aerobic packaging conditions.
