Mangroves is an ecosystem which plays an economical role in Gabon for its watercourses where are used for fishing and marine traffic or as little bin for garbage and waste water disposal. These bad practices destroy that fragile ecosystem, perturbing like this carbon sequestration and biodiversity protection. Hence, the impact of the anthropogenic pollution stress of fishing engine oils so called hydrocarbons pollution on the chemical, microstructure and natural durability of Avicennia. germinans (L.)L. from Ambowé mangrove of the Estuary region of Gabon was studied. The results were compared with samples from Oveng and Mamboumba, two unpolluted sites of Libreville. Dichloromethane and hexane soluble extractives content decreased significantly (p < 0.05) in the polluted heartwoods, 5 ± 0,007 % et 2.11 ± 0,2 %, respectively. Confocal microscopy revealed for the first time the occurrence of rays and vessels opening in the polluted heartwood which could explain the loss of some extractives. That loss of extractives was supported by UV where a dramatic decrease of extractives was observed in the heartwood exposed to pollutants while no changes occurred in lignin. These changes on extractives content and wood microstructures would explain the high mass loss of the polluted heartwood exposed to Trametes versicolor (35.69 ± 6.27 %) and Rhodonia placenta (11.65 ± 6.62 %), these rot fungi provoked only mass losses <10 and 5 %, respectively for the unpolluted heartwoods.

Introduction: Wood is a natural resource used for construction and the manufacture of many products. This material is exposed to damage due to biotic and abiotic factors. An important biotic factor is wood-degrading fungi that generate large economic losses. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of xylophagous fungi (Coniophora puteana and Trametes versicolor) on the natural durability of six timber species in southern Durango, Mexico, and to establish differences between fungal effects on each tree species. Materials and Methods: Samples of Pinus durangensis, P. cooperi, P. strobiformis, Juniperus deppeana, Quercus sideroxyla, and Alnus acuminata were exposed to fungi for 4 months under laboratory conditions according to European Standard EN350-1. Samples of Fagus sylvatica were used as control. Durability was determined as the percentage of wood mass loss for each species. Welch ANOVA tests were performed to establish differences among tree species. Welch t-tests were used to prove loss mass differences between fungi for each tree species. Results: The most resistant species to C. puteana were P. durangensis, J. deppeana, P. cooperi and P. strobiformis, showing mean mass losses lower than 8.08%. The most resistant species to T. versicolor were J. deppeana, P. strobiformis and P. durangensis (mean mass losses lower than 7.39%). Pinus strobiformis and Q. sideroxyla were more susceptible to C. puteana effect; in contrast, P. durangensis and P. cooperi showed more damage due to T. versicolor degradation. Conclusions: Woods of P. durangensis, P. cooperi, P. strobiformis and Juniperus deppeana are well adapted to infection by these xylophagous fungi and are therefore highly recommended for commercial use in southern Durango, Mexico.

Wood in outdoor applications is subject to various decomposition factors. Wood degradation can be prevented by construction details, biocide protection of wood, wood modification or selection of naturally durable species. Unfortunately, most species in Europe do not have naturally durable wood. Imported tree species represent a new pool from which we can draw wood species with better natural durability and better resilience towards climate change. The performance of wood when used outdoors depends on the biologically active compounds (extractives) and the water exclusion efficacy. Considering decay, presence of biologically active compounds and water exclusion efficacy, we can estimate the density, modulus of elasticity, extractive content and resistance dose, which reflects the material properties of wood. Recently, the most commonly used model for this purpose is Meyer-Veltrup. Literature data indicate that the durability of the wood from native and new sites is not always comparable, so it is necessary to determine the resistance of non-native wood species from new sites. This paper presents original data on the wood's overall durability from American Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) grown in Slovenia. Experimental data show that the mature heartwood of Douglas fir is more durable than the wood of European larch (Larix decidua). Durability can be attributed to good water exclusion efficacy and inherent durability. Inherent durability is primarily the result of the high content of extractives. Based on the results, it can be concluded that American Douglas fir grown in Central Europe has a high potential for outdoor use.

The use of quick attenuated total reflectance infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy and near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy to predict extractives content (EC) in heartwood of E. bosistoana with partial least squares regression (PLSR) models was studied. Different spectra pre-processing methods and variable selection were tested for calibration optimisation. While variable selection substantially improved the NIR-PLSR models, only small effects were observed for spectra pre-processing methods and ATR-IR-PLSR models. Both of the NIR-PLSR and ATR-IR-PLSR models yielded reliably EC results with high R2 and low root mean square error (RMSE). NIR based models performed better (RMSE 0.9%) than ATR-IR based models (RMSE 1.6%). Analysis showed that the models were based on IR signals assigned to chemical structures known from eucalyptus heartwood extracts. Combined with PLSR and variable selection, both, ATR-IR and the NIR spectroscopy, can be used to quickly predict EC in E. bosistoana, a measure needed in tree breeding and the quality control of for durable timber.

Time and resource are the restricting factors for the wider use of chemical information of wood in tree breeding programs. NIR offers an advantage over wet-chemical analysis in these aspects and is starting to be used for tree breeding. This work describes the development of a NIR-based assessment of extractive content in heartwood of E. bosistoana, which does not require milling and conditioning of the samples. This was achieved by applying the signal processing algorithms (external parameter orthogonalisation (EPO) and significance multivariate correlation (sMC)) to spectra obtained from solid wood cores, which were able to correct for moisture content, grain direction and sample form. The accuracy of extractive content predictions was further improved by variable selection, resulting in a root mean square error of 1.27%. Considering the range of extractive content in E. bosistoana heartwood of 1.3 to 15.0%, the developed NIR calibration has the potential to be used in an E. bosistoana breeding program or to assess the special variation in extractive content throughout a stem.

This work aimed to evaluate the use of colorimetry in the characterization of biodeterioration marupá, jequitibá and cumaru wood, submitted to white and brown rot. For this purpose, specimens of each Amazonian species were submitted to accelerated decay tests, according to American Society for Testing and Materials - ASTM D2017, during 20 weeks. With a colorimeter, the colorimetric parameters L* (lightness), a* (green-red coordinate), b* (blue-yellow coordinate) and total color change (ΔE) were determined weekly until the fourth week, and then every two weeks until the twentieth week. Additionally, it was determined the mass loss. The results indicated that the colorimetry was effective in monitoring of biodeterioration of wood, as well as to differentiate white and brown rot. The best predictions of natural resistance to white and brown rot were obtained with the parameters b* and L*, respectively. We also emphasizes the use of ΔE to estimate the biodeterioration of wood, because of their significant correlations with weight loss.


Objetivou-se avaliar o emprego da colorimetria na caracterização da biodeterioração das madeiras de marupá, jequitibá e cumaru submetidas ao ataque de fungos de podridão branca e parda. Para tanto, corpos de prova de cada espécie amazônica foram submetidos a ensaios de apodrecimento acelerado, de acordo com a American Society for Testing and Materials - ASTM D2017, durante 20 semanas. Os parâmetros colorimétricos L* (luminosidade), a* (coordenada verde-vermelho), b* (coordenada amarelo-azul) e a variação total da cor (ΔE) foram determinados semanalmente até a quarta semana, e posteriormente a cada duas semanas até a vigésima semana, com auxílio de um espectrofotocolorímetro. Adicionalmente, foram determinadas as perdas de massa dos corpos de prova. Os resultados permitiram destacar que a colorimetria foi eficaz no monitoramento da biodeterioração da madeira, bem como para diferenciação da podridão branca e parda. As melhores predições da resistência natural aos fungos de podridão branca e parda foram obtidas com os parâmetros b* e L*, respectivamente. Enfatiza-se também, o emprego da ΔE como parâmetro auxiliar na estimativa da biodeterioração da madeira, em razão de suas correlações significativas com a perda de massa.

O objetivo da pesquisa foi avaliar a resistência natural da madeira de teca (Tectona grandis) a fungos e térmitas xilófagos em condições de laboratório. As árvores empregadas possuíam 15 anos de idade, provenientes de um plantio da Empresa Celulose Nipo Brasileira - CENIBRA S.A., localizada no município de Belo Oriente, Estado de Minas Gerais. Para a determinação da resistência natural da madeira a agentes xilófagos, foram realizados ensaios de apodrecimento acelerado em laboratório com os fungos Postia placenta, Neolentinus lepideus, Polyporus fumosus, e de preferência alimentar com cupins subterrâneos Nasutitermes sp. Corpos de prova foram retirados em quatro posições no sentido medula casca: cerne interno (próximo da medula), cerne intermediário, cerne externo (próximo ao alburno) e no alburno, na altura de 1,30m do nível do solo e submetidos à ação dos fungos por 13 semanas e cupins por 45 dias. Constatou-se que o cerne da madeira de teca proveniente do Vale do Rio Doce, Minas Gerais, foi altamente resistente, tendo o cerne interno sido menos resistente que as demais porções do cerne à ação dos agentes xilófagos, enquanto a madeira de alburno foi classificada como de resistência moderada (Polyporus fumosus) ou resistente (Postia placenta e Neolentinus lepideus).


This research aimed to evaluate the natural resistance of teak wood (Tectona grandis) to xylophagous fungi and termites in laboratory conditions. It was used trees with fifteen years old, from a plantation of the Forest Enterprise Celulose Nipo Brasileira - CENIBRA S.A., located in Belo Oriente, Minas Gerais State, Brazil. To determine the natural resistance of teak wood in laboratory were employed the Postia placenta, Neolentinus lepideus, Polyporus fumosus and Fomes connatus fungi and to termites resistance was employed the feeding preference assay with subterranean termites Nasutitermes sp. Samples were taken from four positions in the stem (heartwood near the pith, heartwood intermediate, outer heartwood and sapwood) at 1,30m to soil level and submitted to the action of fungi for thirteen weeks and termites for 45 days. It was found that the heartwood of teakwood from the Vale do Rio Doce, Minas Gerais State, Brazil was highly resistant. The internal heartwood was less resistant than the other portions of the heartwood to action of wood decay agents, while the sapwood was classified as moderately resistant (Polyporus fumosus) or resistant (Postia placenta and Neolentinus lepideus).

The aim of this study was to characterize the properties of juvenile and mature heartwood of Robinia pseudoacacia L. (black locust). The content, the composition, and subcellular localization of heartwood extractives were studied in 14 old-grown trees from forest sites in Germany and Hungary, as well as in 16 younger trees of four clone types. Heartwood extractives (methanol and acetone extraction) were analysed by HPLC-chromatography. UV microspectrophotometry was used to localize the extractives in the wood cell walls. The natural durability of juvenile and mature heartwood was analysed according to the European standard EN 350-1. Growth analyses, as well as the chemical analyses, showed that in Robinia the formation of juvenile wood is restricted to the first 10-15 years of cambial growth. In the heartwood high contents of phenolic compounds and flavonoids were present, which were in high concentrations in the cell walls of the axial parenchyma and of the vessels. In the juvenile heartwood, the content of these extractives is significantly lower than in the mature heartwood. In agree, the juvenile heartwood had a lower resistance to decay by Coniophora puteana (brown rot fungus) and Coriolus versicolor (white rot fungus) compared to the mature.


O objetivo deste estudo foi caracterizar as propriedades da região de cerne dos lenhos juvenis e adultos de Robinia pseudoacacia L. O conteúdo, a composição, bem como a localização subcelular dos extrativos foram estudados em 14 árvores de florestas de produção na Alemanha e na Hungria, assim como em 16 árvores de quatro tipos clone. Os extrativos (metanol e acetona extração) foram analisados por cromatografia-HPLC. O microespectrofotômetro de ultra violeta foi utilizado para localizar os extrativos nas paredes celulares da madeira. A durabilidade natural do lenho juvenil e adulto foi analisada de acordo com a norma europeia EN 350-1. Análises do incremento, bem como as análises químicas mostraram que, em Robinia a formação de lenho juvenil é limitada aos primeiros 10/15 anos de crescimento cambial. No cerne, elevados teores de compostos fenólicos e flavonóides foram encontrados e localizados em concentrações elevadas nas paredes celulares do parênquima axial e dos vasos. No cerno do lenho juvenil o conteúdo destes extrativos é significativamente menor do que no cerne do lenho adulto. o cerne do lenho juvenil apresentou menor resistência à degradação por Coniophora puteana (fungo de podridão parda) e Coriolus versicolor (fungo de podridão branca) em comparação com a madeira de lenho adulto.

The durability of the stem of Bactris gasipaes Kunth (Peach palm) was evaluated in field tests in a forest and in an urban environment, as well as in laboratory conditions. Five trees with spines and five trees without spines from the Tabatinga population (Putumayo landrace) were used in the experiment. Disks approximately 25-30cm thick were taken from the butt, middle and top portions of each tree and distributed at random in forest area near the INPA Peach Palm Germoplasm Bank (2°38'S60°03'W). The disks were checked every three months for 18 months for susceptibility to fungi. In the urban environment each disk was halved to remove the center and each half was distributed at random, one in a concave and the other in a convex position, on a wooden framework in an area near the CPPF/INPA, Manaus, and checked every 2 months for one year. In the forest environment the coating of the disks was susceptible to the fungi Hymenogramme javanensis Mont. & Berk. and Hypoxylon rubiginosum (Pers.: Fr.) Fr. In the urban environment the wood was highly susceptible to the fungi Lenzites striata (Swart.: Fr.) Fr., Lenzites sp, Porostereum amethysteum Hjortst.& Ryv. and Stereum strigoso-zonatum (Sch.) G. H. Cunn. In laboratory conditions the peach palm wood showed great resistance to the fungi Lenzites trabea Pers.: Fr., Polyporus fumosus Pers.: Fr. and Pycnoporus sanguineus (L.: Fr.) Murr.


A durabilidade da madeira de Bactris gasipaes Kunth (pupunha) face aos fungos foi avaliada em ambiente florestal e urbano e em condições de laboratório. Foram utilizadas, cinco árvores com espinhos e cinco sem espinhos da população Tabatinga, raças Putumayo, sendo retirados discos de 25-30cm da base, meio e do topo de cada pupunheira e colocados em uma área florestal próxima ao Banco Ativo de Germoplama de B. gasipaes (2°38'S, 60°03'W). Os discos foram inspecionados trimestralmente, para acompanhar o processo de biodeterioração da madeira causado por fungos durante dezoito meses. No ensaio em ambiente urbano, as amostras do estipe foram distribuídas, uma na posição côncava e outra na convexa, sobre uma estrutura de madeira localizada em uma área próxima da CPPF do Campus do INPA, Manaus e inspecionadas bimestralmente por um ano. Em ambiente florestal, o revestimento dos discos mostrou-se suscetível aos fungos Hymenogramme javanensis Mont. & Berk. e Hypoxylon rubiginosum (Pers.: Fr.) Fr.. Em ambiente urbano, a madeira apresentou alta susceptibilidade a Lenzites striata (Swart.: Fr.) Fr. e a Lenzites sp. e o revestimento a Porostereum amethysteum Hjortst. & Ryv. e a Stereum strigoso-zonatum (Sch.) G. H. Cunn.. Em condições de laboratório, a madeira da pupunheira demonstrou alta resistência aos fungos Lenzites trabea Pers.:Fr., Polyporus fumosus Pers.:Fr. e Pycnoporus sanguineus (L.:Fr.) Murr.
