RESUMO

Pd speciation induced by the combined effect of CO and water on Pd/SSZ-13 samples prepared by both impregnation and ion exchange was examined by FT-IR spectroscopy of CO adsorbed at room temperature and at liquid nitrogen temperature on anhydrous and hydrated samples. Starting from the literature findings related to the CO reducing effect on Pd cations, the present work gives precise spectroscopic evidences on how water is necessary in this process not only for compensating with H+ the zeolite exchange sites set free by Pd reduction, but also for mobilizing isolated Pd2+/Pd+ cations and making possible the reduction reactions. The aggregation of some Pd+ sites, just formed by the reduction and mobilized by the hydration, gives rise to the formation of Pd2O particles. Also, Pd0(100) sites are observed with CO on hydrated sample, formed by the aggregation and reduction of isolated Pd cations. Moreover, Pd0(111) sites are formed on the surface of PdOx particles during CO outgassing. The observation of the combined effect of water and CO allowed to define assignments of IR bands related to carbonyls of Pd in different oxidation states and coordination degrees.

RESUMO

The emission of heavy-duty vehicles has raised great concerns worldwide. The complex working and loading conditions, which may differ a lot from PEMS tests, raised new challenges to the supervision and control of emissions, especially during real-world applications. On-board diagnostics (OBD) technology with data exchange enabled and strengthened the monitoring of emissions from a large number of heavy-duty diesel vehicles. This paper presents an analysis of the OBD data collected from more than 800 city and highway heavy-duty vehicles in China using remote OBD data terminals. Real-world NOx and CO2 emissions of China-6 heavy-duty vehicles have been examined. The results showed that city heavy-duty vehicles had higher NOx emission levels, which was mostly due to longer time of low SCR temperatures below 180°C. The application of novel methods based on 3B-MAW also found that heavy-duty diesel vehicles tended to have high NOx emissions at idle. Also, little difference had been found in work-based CO2 emissions, and this may be due to no major difference were found in occupancies of hot running.

RESUMO

To understand the smoke level and NOx emission characteristics of in-use construction machinery in Beijing, we selected 905 construction machines in Beijing from August 2022 to April 2023 to monitor the emission level of smoke and NOx. The exhaust smoke level and excessive emission situation of different machinery types were identified, and their NOx emission levels were monitored according to the free acceleration method. We investigated the correlation of NOx and smoke emission, and proposed suggestions for controlling pollution discharge from construction machinery in the future. The results show that the exhaust smoke level was 0-2.62 m-1, followed a log-normal distribution (µ = -1.73, δ = 1.09, R2 = 0.99), with a 5.64% exceedance rate. Differences were observed among machinery types, with low-power engine forklifts showing higher smoke levels. The NOx emission range was 71-1516 ppm, followed a normal distribution (µ = 565.54, δ = 309.51, R2 = 0.83). Differences among machinery types were relatively small. Engine rated net power had the most significant impact on NOx emissions. Thus, NOx emissions from construction machinery need further attention. Furthermore, we found a weak negative correlation (p < 0.05) between the emission level of smoke and NOx, that is the synergic emission reduction effect is poor, emphasizing the need for NOx emission limits. In the future, the oversight in Beijing should prioritize phasing out China Ⅰ and China Ⅱ machinery, and monitor emissions from high-power engine China Ⅲ machinery.

RESUMO

Catalytic oxidation of NO at room temperature was carried out over nitrogen (N)-doped sludge char (SC) prepared from pyrolysis of municipal sewage sludge, and urea was adopted as nitrogen source. The effects of different N-doping methods (one-step and two-step method), dried sludge (DS)/urea mass ratios (5:1, 4:1, 3:1, 2:1, and 1:1), SC preparation procedures (pyrolysis only, pyrolysis with acid washing, and pyrolysis with KOH activation and acid washing), and different pyrolysis temperatures (500, 600, 700, and 800°C) on the catalytic oxidation of NO were compared to optimize the procedure for SC preparation. The results indicated that N-doping could obviously promote the catalytic performance of SC. The one-step method with simultaneous sludge pyrolysis (at 700°C), KOH activation, and N-doping (DS/urea of 3:1) was the optimal procedure for preparing the N-doped SC with the NO conversion rate of 54.7%, whereas the optimal NO conversion rate of SC without N-doping was only 47.3%. Urea worked both as carbon and nitrogen source, which could increase about 2.9%-16.5% of carbon and 24.8%-42.7% of nitrogen content in SC pyrolyzed at 700°C. N-doping significantly promoted microporosity of SC. The optimal N-doped SC showed specific surface areas of 571.38 m2/g, much higher than 374.34 m2/g of the optimal SC without N-doping. In addition, N-doping also increased amorphousness and surface basicity of SC through the formation of N-containing groups. Finally, three reaction paths, i.e. microporous reactor, active sites, and basic site control path, were proposed to explain the mechanism of N-doping on promoting the catalytic performance of NO.

Introduction: In the process of creating the National LGBT+ Comprehensive Health Policy, primary care has important prominence as it must work as the preferential contact of transgender (trans) users. Objective: To investigate the perceptions of primary care professionals about the vulnerability situations faced by trans persons and also hindrances they consider existing in this population's search for access to these services. Methods: A qualitative approach was used through semi-structured interviews with 38 health care professionals working in the Family Health Strategy of two cities in the countryside of the state of São Paulo. The material obtained was submitted to analysis of Bardin content. Results: The results pointed to a lack of knowledge about real hindrances that obstruct the access to and follow-up by health services for trans persons. It was also observed the maintenance of prejudices and ideas that reinforce stereotypes connected to the matter and extend to the practice of professionals. It is directly related to the lack of approach of issues related to human sexuality in the education of those professionals, in addition to lack of update about it, which impacts the quality of service offered to the population under study. Conclusions: The standards and ordinances already existing need to be effectively practiced, being crucial the extension and spread of knowledge about trans matters in the context of public health services. It can be the basis for subsidizing the education of professionals who work in this field, as well as effective public policies.

Introduction: This article explores the theme of empathy in the doctor-patient relationship. Objective: To contribute to the improvement of clinical communication skills by reviewing the understanding and application of empathy in clinical practice. Methods: A non-systematic review of the main books used in clinical communication on the topic of empathy. The methodological approach consisted in the following steps: (1) An intentional sample of the literature; (2) Data collection and reading, i.e., extracting fragments from texts; (3) Content analysis, focusing on definition, importance and instrumentalization for practical application; (4) Selection and synthesis to facilitate understanding and contextualization on the topic; and (5) Comparison and ponderance of the selected content. Results: The scope within which empathy was worked on in the selected literature resulted in three levels of empathic density: low, moderate, and high. Thus, low empathic density was limited to definition and importance; moderate density incorporated some examples of how to apply empathy in a fragmented way; high empathic density addressed the topic more fully, facilitating instrumentation in clinical practice. There is agreement in the literature analyzed that the practice of empathy reflects on the improvement of medical care. However, its exercise remains in the rational field. By exemplifying the practical application of empathy, the authors suggest that the physician adopt a non-judgmental posture, while proposing an imaginative exercise of guessing the patient's feelings/emotions. Although high-density empathy authors understand the importance of emotions and name them in the process, there is a need for an unfolding and deepening from this point on. Conclusions: Empathy is a complex subject with several nuances and is approached in different ways in the selected literature. This evidences its richness and originality, at the same time that it presents gaps for the application of empathy in clinical practice.

Trans-chalcone (TC) is a flavonoid precursor characterized by a wide spectrum of action, with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. However, no validated methods are available in official compendia for the analysis of this substance. Thus, the aim of this work was to develop and validate a simple, fast, and reproducible spectrophotometric method for the analysis of TC in raw material, and in topical pharmaceutical formulation containing TC. The established conditions were: methanol as extracting solvent, and detection wavelength of 309 nm by UV spectrophotometer. All tests followed the rules of Resolution RDC 166, 2017. The proposed method was selective. Linearity was demonstrated in the concentration range of 1 to 8 µg/mL (r = 0.999). Repeatability and intermediate precision were confirmed by low relative standard deviation values of 1.53% and 2.70% for TC, and of 1.73% and 2.91% for formulation containing TC. Accuracy, evaluated through recovery test, was adequate, with minimum of 98.24% and maximum of 100.23% of recovery. It was observed that the small deliberate modifications done did not interfere with the results, demonstrating the method is robust. The results showed that the method was considered suitable for the intended purpose, inexpensive, easy to apply, selective, linear, precise, accurate, and robust for the determination TC, and pharmaceutical formulation containing TC. Thus, the method developed satisfies the need for an analytical method for the determination of TC, and topical formulation containing TC, being effective, innovative and able to aid in the development of the pharmaceutical field.

RESUMO

In our latest research endeavor, we are proud to present an innovative approach to the synthesis of carbon dots (CDs) derived from the biomass xylan, which we have termed P-CDs. These P-CDs are meticulously integrated with a state-of-the-art biomass nanofiber membrane composed of polycaprolactone (PCL) and polylactic acid (PLA), resulting in the creation of a novel solid-state fluorescent sensor, designated as NFP-CDs. This cutting-edge sensor has been meticulously engineered for the highly sensitive and specific detection of nitrite ions (NO2-), a critical parameter in various fields. The NFP-CDs sensor stands out for its user-friendly design, cost-effective production, and portable nature, making it an ideal choice for rapid and visible nitrite ion detection. It exhibits an extraordinary response time of less than 1 s, which is a testament to its high sensitivity. Furthermore, the sensor demonstrates exceptional selectivity and specificity, with a remarkably low detection threshold of 0.36 µM. This is achieved through a sophisticated dual detection mechanism that synergistically combines colorimetric and spectral analyses, ensuring accurate and reliable results. In addition to its impressive technical specifications, the NFP-CDs sensor has been rigorously tested and validated for its efficacy in detecting nitrite ions in real-world samples. These samples include a diverse range of food products such as rock sugar, preserved mustard, kimchi, and canned fish. The sensor has demonstrated a remarkable recovery rate, which varies from 99 % to 106 %, highlighting its potential for practical application in nitrite ion detection. This research not only offers a robust and effective strategy for the detection of nitrite ions but also carries profound implications for enhancing food safety and bolstering environmental monitoring efforts. The development of the NFP-CDs sensor represents a significant step forward in the field of sensor technology, providing a powerful tool for the detection of nitrite ions and contributing to the broader goals of public health and environmental stewardship.

RESUMO

A fundamental criterion considered essential to deem the procedure of vital organ procurement for transplantation ethical is that the donor must be dead, as per the Dead Donor Rule (DDR). In the case of Donation after Circulatory Death (DCD), is the donor genuinely dead? The main aim of this article is to clarify this uncertainty, which primarily arises from the fact that in DCD, death is determined based on cardiac criteria (Circulatory Death, CD), rather than neurological criteria (Brain Death, BD), and that to allow the procurement procedure, physicians reperfuse the organs in an assisted manner. To ensure that the cessation of circulation leads to the irreversible loss of brain functions, DCD regulations require that physicians wait a certain period after CD before commencing vital organ procurement. However, during this "no-touch period," the organs are at risk of damage, potentially rendering them unsuitable for transplantation. When DCD is performed on patients whose CD follows a Withdrawal of Life-Sustaining Treatment (WLST) (DCD Maastricht III category), how long should the no-touch period last? Does its existence really make sense? Does beginning the procedure of vital organ procurement immediately after WLST constitute a violation of the DDR that can be ethically justified? The discussion aims to provide arguments in support of the non-absoluteness of the DDR.

RESUMO

CONTEXT: Several effects of non-sugar-sweetened beverage (NSSBs) intake on health outcomes have been reported; however, the evidence on the association between NSSBs intake and chronic diseases and mortality risk is still inconclusive. OBJECTIVE: This umbrella review aimed to summarize the evidence on the association between NSSBs intake and the risk of chronic diseases and mortality. DATA SOURCES: Embase, ISI Web of Science, Cochrane Central, and PubMed were searched up to September 2023 for relevant meta-analyses of observational prospective cohort studies. DATA EXTRACTION: Two groups of researchers independently extracted study data and assessed the risk of bias for meta-analyses and primary studies. DATA ANALYSIS: Six meta-analyses, reporting 74 summary hazard ratios (HRs) for different outcomes obtained from 50 primary studies, were included. The summary HRs, 95% CIs, and certainty of evidence on the association of NSSBs intake with risk of chronic diseases and mortality were as follows: all-cause mortality (per 355 mL/d: 1.06 [1.01 to 1.10]; moderate certainty); stroke (per 250 mL/d: 1.09 [1.04 to 1.13]; high certainty); coronary heart disease (CHD) (per 250 mL/d: 1.06 [1.02 to 1.11]; high certainty); hypertension (HTN) (high vs low intake: 1.14 [1.09 to 1.18]; moderate certainty); type 2 diabetes (T2D) (high vs low intake: 1.16 [1.08 to 1.26]; low certainty); metabolic syndrome (MetS) (high vs low intake: 1.32 [1.22 to 1.43]; low certainty); colorectal cancer (high vs low intake: 0.78 [0.62 to 0.99]; moderate certainty); and leukemia (high vs low intake: 1.35 [1.03 to 1.77]; moderate certainty). For other outcomes, including the risk of cardiovascular and cancer mortality, chronic kidney diseases, breast cancer, prostate cancer, endometrial cancer, pancreatic cancer, multiple myeloma, and non-Hodgkin lymphoma, no association was found. CONCLUSION: This study provides further evidence that NSSBs are associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality, stroke, CHD, HTN, T2D, MetS, and leukemia. Moreover, a higher intake of NSSBs was associated with a lower risk of colorectal cancer. However, it should be noted that the magnitudes of the associations are not large. Further studies are needed to clarify the long-term effects of different NSSBs intakes on health. SYSTEMATIC REVIEW REGISTRATION: PROSPERO no. CRD42023429981.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of prostheses and investigate how demographic and socioeconomic characteristics influence choices of restoration types in the adult population of the United States over 20 years of age. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) conducted from 2017 to March 2020 Pre-Pandemic Data. We examined demographic and socioeconomic variables, dentition status, and restoration types among participants with partial edentulism. The percentage of categorical variables between restoration types was compared using chi-square tests. Multinomial logistic regression models were employed to explore the relationship between prosthetic choices and demographic and socioeconomic factors, both unadjusted and adjusted for all characteristics, including the number of missing teeth. RESULTS: Out of 15,560 participants, 7,805 eligible individuals with a mean age of 47.8 and a male percentage of 48.4% were included in the analysis. The results indicated that individuals who were younger, male, of Mexican American or non-Hispanic Black ethnicity, possessed lower educational attainment, were never married, had a low income-to-poverty ratio, held private insurance, or were unemployed were more inclined to choose no restoration. Further, males, non-Hispanic Black individuals, those with lower educational attainment, lower income-to-poverty ratios, and those who were unemployed or retired were more likely to choose RPDs over FPDs. Furthermore, never-married individuals and those with private insurance were likelier to choose FPDs in the maxilla (p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Significant differences were observed among restoration types, demographic and socioeconomic variables, and dentition status in both the upper and lower jaws. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study underscores the significance of socioeconomic variables in the restoration of partial edentulism.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes (T2D) frequently exhibit chronic kidney disease (CKD) which may be caused by environmental hazards such as exposure to air pollutants. However, limited research has explored the effects of prolonged exposure to air pollutants on CKD development in this population. This study examines the relationship between long-term exposure to air pollutants and CKD incidence in a longitudinal cohort of individuals with type 2 diabetes in Taiwan METHODS: Between 2003 and 2005, we recruited 1316 T2D patients (693 females [52.66 %]; mean age 56.16 ± 8.97 years). Patients were followed until December 31, 2012, with at least two clinical visits. Baseline demographics, medical history, and biomarker levels were collected. The development of CKD was determined by eGFR level < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2. Monthly averages of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and fine particulate matter [PM ≤ 2.5 µm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5)] were acquired from 72 ambient air monitoring stations. The kriging method was employed to estimate the exposure levels to PM2.5, NO2, temperature, and relative humidity in the participants' residential areas. Cox regression with time-dependent covariates regression was applied to assess the impact of long-term exposure to air pollutants and CKD risk. RESULTS: Of 992 patients with normal renal function at baseline, 411 (41.43 %) experienced CKD occurrence over a median follow-up period of 5.45 years. The incidence of CKD was 93.96 cases per 1000 person-years. In multivariable adjusted models, patients exposed to PM2.5 levels above the third quartile of (>33.44 µg/m3) and NO2 levels above the fourth quartile (>22.55 ppb) were found to have an increased risk of CKD occurrence compared to lower exposure levels. CONCLUSIONS: This longitudinal study highlights the increased risk of CKD in individuals with type 2 diabetes due to prolonged exposure to NO2 and PM2.5, emphasizing the need for tailored air quality management strategies for this high-risk population.

RESUMO

In this work, the gas sensing properties of a single ZnO nanowire (NW) are investigated, simultaneously in terms of photoluminescence (PL) and photocurrent (PC) response to NO2 gas, with the purpose of giving new insights on the gas sensing mechanism of a single 1D ZnO nanostructure. A single ZnO NW sensing device was fabricated, characterized, and compared with a sample made of bundles of ZnO NWs. UV near-band-edge PL emission spectroscopy was carried out at room temperature and by lowering the temperature down to 77 K, which allows detection of resolved PL peaks related to different excitonic transition regions. Surface effects were observed in PL maps, considering different nano and microstructures. Electrical and optical measurements were acquired at the same time during the NO2 gas exposure, allowing for the comparison of PL and PC response times and signal recovery. During NO2 gas desorption, irreversible behavior in the surface-related and donor-acceptor pair (DAP) regions is interpreted as the effect of an initial transient when electronic transfer from the gas molecules to the bulk occurs through the ZnO NW surface which acts as a channel. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work which investigates the simultaneous PL optical and PC electrical response signals of a single ZnO NW to gas exposure.

RESUMO

Oxygen vacancies (VO) in metal oxide semiconductors play an important role in improving gas-sensing performance of chemiresistive gas sensors. Nonetheless, there is still a lack of clear understanding of the inherent mechanism of the influence of oxygen vacancies on gas sensing due to generally focusing on the concentration of VO. Herein, oxygen vacancies were rationally modulated in WO3 nanoflower structures via an annealing process, resulting in a transformation of VO from neutral (VO0) to a doubly ionized (VO2+) state. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that VO2+ is significantly more efficient than VO0 for NO2 detection in competition with atmospheric O2. Benefiting from a high concentration of VO2+, the WO3-450 (WO3 annealed at 450 °C) sensor exhibits excellent sensing performance with an ultrahigh sensitivity (3674.1 to 5 ppm NO2), superior selectivity, and long-term stability (one month). Furthermore, the sensor with the wide range of concentration detection not only can detect NO2 gas with parts per million (ppm) but also can detect NO2 with parts per billion (ppb) level concentration, with a high sensibility reaching 2.8 to 25 ppb NO2 and over 100 to 100 ppb NO2. This study elucidates the oxygen vacancy mediated sensing mechanism toward NO2 and provides an effective strategy for the rational design of gas sensors with high sensing performance.

RESUMO

Ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) are key players in the nitrogen cycle and among the most abundant microorganisms in the ocean, thriving even in oxygen-depleted ecosystems. AOA produce the greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) as a byproduct of ammonia oxidation. Additionally, the recent discovery of a nitric oxide dismutation pathway in the AOA isolate Nitrosopumilus maritimus points toward other N2O production and consumption pathways in AOA. AOA that perform NO dismutation when exposed to oxygen depletion, produce oxygen and dinitrogen as final products. Based on the transient accumulation of N2O coupled with oxygen accumulation, N2O has been proposed as an intermediate in this novel archaeal pathway. In this study, we spiked N2O to oxygen-depleted incubations with pure cultures of two marine AOA isolates that were performing NO dismutation. By using combinations of N compounds with different isotopic signatures (15NO2 - pool +44N2O spike and 14NO2 - pool +46N2O spike), we evaluated the N2O spike effects on the production of oxygen and the isotopic signature of N2 and N2O. The experiments confirmed that N2O is an intermediate in NO dismutation by AOA, distinguishing it from similar pathways in other microbial clades. Furthermore, we showed that AOA rapidly reduce high concentrations of spiked N2O to N2. These findings advance our understanding of microbial N2O production and consumption in oxygen-depleted settings and highlight AOA as potentially important key players in N2O turnover.

RESUMO

NO2 seriously threatens human health and the ecological environment. However, the fabrication of highly sensitive NO2 sensors with rapid response/recovery rates, low detection limits, and ease of integration remains a challenge. Herein, benefiting from the fast carrier transfer and rich active sites, holey graphene oxide (HGO) was adopted to functionalize the In2O3 nanosheet to construct NO2 gas sensors. Characterization and theoretical calculations established the merits of HGO decoration in the NO2 sensing. The optimal sample, 0.5 wt % HGO/In2O3-sheet, exhibited superior sensing properties, resulting in a 1.37-fold improvement in response to 1 ppm of NO2 compared to the GO/In2O3 counterpart. Gas-sensing kinetics analysis revealed its lower activation energy and higher kinetic rate constants. Importantly, pulsed-temperature modulation was employed to decouple the gas adsorption from surface activation processes, achieving an ultrahigh response of 2776 to 1 ppm of NO2 for the 0.5 wt % HGO/In2O3-sheet sensor. Compared to the isothermal mode, this strategy enhanced the response value by 1.6 times, reduced the response/recovery time by 33%/70%, and enabled the detection of NO2 concentrations as low as 1 ppb. Finally, an NO2 monitoring alarm system based on the 0.5 wt % HGO/In2O3-sheet sensor with pulsed-temperature modulation was demonstrated for hazard warnings.

RESUMO

The deactivation of ozone decomposition catalysts has been a bottleneck in their industrial application. As an efficient catalyst regeneration method, the liquid-phase method has attracted wide attention due to its operability and universality. However, the amount of waste liquid generated by the used regeneration liquid is a major drawback of its application. Therefore, we propose an electrolytic regeneration method for cyclic regeneration of MnOx ozone decomposition catalysts by combining the advantages of the electrolytic process. In this method, NaNO2 solution is used to react with O22- to efficiently regenerate the inactivated MnOx catalysts, while NO2- is oxidized to NO3-, and then the oxidized NO3- can be efficiently reduced to NO2- through the electrolysis process at the cathode with an 88% Faraday efficiency, ultimately realizing the recycling of the NO2-/NO3- regeneration solution. By this method, the regeneration of inactivated MnOx ozone catalysts can be realized only using electricity.
