Com as universidades fechadas e a implementação do Ensino Remoto Emergencial, as atividades curriculares ocorreram através de plataformas digitais. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a percepção de aprendizagem on-line na disciplina de Biomateriais da Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidade Federal Fluminense no período da pandemia. O questionário COLLES (Constructivist OnLine Learning Environment Survey) foi enviado individualmente por e-mail aos cinquenta alunos, apresentando 24 declarações divididas em seis quesitos: relevância, reflexão crítica, interatividade, apoio dos tutores, apoio entre os colegas e compreensão; e para cada declaração cinco opções de resposta: quase sempre, frequentemente, algumas vezes, raramente e quase nunca. Quarenta e um alunos responderam. A soma das médias obtidas em quase sempre e frequentemente foi de 87,2% para relevância, 70% para reflexão crítica, 33,9% para interatividade, 47,6% para apoio dos tutores, 44,2% para apoio dos colegas e 89,5% para compreensão. Concluiu-se que a relevância, a reflexão crítica e a compreensão apresentaram melhores resultados, enquanto a interatividade, o apoio entre os colegas e o apoio dos tutores demonstraram necessidade de aprimoramento. E apesar das limitações do ERE, a avaliação positiva dos alunos evidenciou esta modalidade de educação on-line como uma solução plausível.


With universities closed and the implementation of Emergency Remote Teaching, curricular activities took place through digital platforms. The objective of this study was to assess the perception of online learning in the Biomaterials course at the Dental School of the Federal Fluminense University during the pandemic. The COLLES questionnaire (Constructivist OnLine Learning Environment Survey) was individually sent via email to fifty students, presenting 24 statements divided into six aspects: relevance, critical reflection, interactivity, tutor support, peer support, and comprehension. For each statement, there were five response options: almost always, often, sometimes, rarely, and almost never. Forty-one students responded. The sum of the averages obtained for almost always and often was 87.2% for relevance, 70% for critical reflection, 33.9% for interactivity, 47.6% for tutor support, 44.2% for peer support, and 89.5% for comprehension. It was concluded that relevance, critical reflection, and comprehension showed better results, while interactivity, peer support, and tutor support demonstrated a need for improvement. Despite the limitations of Emergency Remote Teaching, the positive evaluation from the students highlighted this mode of online education as a plausible solution.

Nucleic acid tests (NATs) are considered as gold standard in molecular diagnosis. To meet the demand for onsite, point-of-care, specific and sensitive, trace and genotype detection of pathogens and pathogenic variants, various types of NATs have been developed since the discovery of PCR. As alternatives to traditional NATs (e.g., PCR), isothermal nucleic acid amplification techniques (INAATs) such as LAMP, RPA, SDA, HDR, NASBA, and HCA were invented gradually. PCR and most of these techniques highly depend on efficient and optimal primer and probe design to deliver accurate and specific results. This chapter starts with a discussion of traditional NATs and INAATs in concert with the description of computational tools available to aid the process of primer/probe design for NATs and INAATs. Besides briefly covering nanoparticles-assisted NATs, a more comprehensive presentation is given on the role CRISPR-based technologies have played in molecular diagnosis. Here we provide examples of a few groundbreaking CRISPR assays that have been developed to counter epidemics and pandemics and outline CRISPR biology, highlighting the role of CRISPR guide RNA and its design in any successful CRISPR-based application. In this respect, we tabularize computational tools that are available to aid the design of guide RNAs in CRISPR-based applications. In the second part of our chapter, we discuss machine learning (ML)- and deep learning (DL)-based computational approaches that facilitate the design of efficient primer and probe for NATs/INAATs and guide RNAs for CRISPR-based applications. Given the role of microRNA (miRNAs) as potential future biomarkers of disease diagnosis, we have also discussed ML/DL-based computational approaches for miRNA-target predictions. Our chapter presents the evolution of nucleic acid-based diagnosis techniques from PCR and INAATs to more advanced CRISPR/Cas-based methodologies in concert with the evolution of deep learning (DL)- and machine learning (ml)-based computational tools in the most relevant application domains.

Tissue on a chip or organ-on-chip (OOC) is a technology that's dignified to form a transformation in drug discovery through the use of advanced platforms. These are 3D in-vitro cell culture models that mimic micro-environment of human organs or tissues on artificial microstructures built on a portable microfluidic chip without involving sacrificial humans or animals. This review article aims to offer readers a thorough and insightful understanding of technology. It begins with an in-depth understanding of chip design and instrumentation, underlining its pivotal role and the imperative need for its development in the modern scientific landscape. The review article explores into the myriad applications of OOC technology, showcasing its transformative impact on fields such as radiobiology, drug discovery and screening, and its pioneering use in space research. In addition to highlighting these diverse applications, the article provides a critical analysis of the current challenges that OOC technology faces. It examines both the biological and technical limitations that hinder its progress and efficacy and discusses the potential advancements and innovations that could drive the OOC technology forward. Through this comprehensive review, readers will gain a deep appreciation of the significance, capabilities, and evolving landscape of OOC technology.

The emission of heavy-duty vehicles has raised great concerns worldwide. The complex working and loading conditions, which may differ a lot from PEMS tests, raised new challenges to the supervision and control of emissions, especially during real-world applications. On-board diagnostics (OBD) technology with data exchange enabled and strengthened the monitoring of emissions from a large number of heavy-duty diesel vehicles. This paper presents an analysis of the OBD data collected from more than 800 city and highway heavy-duty vehicles in China using remote OBD data terminals. Real-world NOx and CO2 emissions of China-6 heavy-duty vehicles have been examined. The results showed that city heavy-duty vehicles had higher NOx emission levels, which was mostly due to longer time of low SCR temperatures below 180°C. The application of novel methods based on 3B-MAW also found that heavy-duty diesel vehicles tended to have high NOx emissions at idle. Also, little difference had been found in work-based CO2 emissions, and this may be due to no major difference were found in occupancies of hot running.

Complex tissue damage accompanying with bacterial infection challenges healthcare systems globally. Conventional tissue engineering scaffolds normally generate secondary implantation trauma, mismatched regeneration and infection risks. Herein, we developed an easily implanted scaffold with multistep shape memory and photothermal-chemodynamic properties to exactly match repair requirements of each part from the tissue defect by adjusting its morphology as needed meanwhile inhibiting bacterial infection on demand. Specifically, a thermal-induced shape memory scaffold was prepared using hydroxyethyl methacrylate and polyethylene glycol diacrylate, which was further combined with the photothermal agent iron tannate (FeTA) to produce NIR light-induced shape memory property. By varying ingredients ratios in each segment, this scaffold could perform a stepwise recovery under different NIR periods. This process facilitated implantation after shape fixing to avoid trauma caused by conventional methods and gradually filled irregular defects under NIR to perform suitable tissue regeneration. Moreover, FeTA also catalyzed Fenton reaction at bacterial infections with abundant H2O2, which produced excess ROS for chemodynamic antibacterial therapy. As expected, bacteriostatic rate was further enhanced by additional photothermal therapy under NIR. The in vitro and vivo results showed that our scaffold was able to perform high efficacy in both antibiosis, inflammation reduction and wound healing acceleration, indicating a promising candidate for the regeneration of complex tissue damage with bacterial infection.

A novel fluorescent probe NIPF was synthesized by the Suzuki reaction to recognize Cu2+ and CN-. With the addition of Cu2+, NIPF exhibited strong fluorescence quenching (90 % for NIPF) with a Ksv value of 3.4 × 106 M-1 and a detection limit of 9.04 × 10-10 M. Subsequently, CN- was added to the NIPF-Cu2+ solution, and [Cu(CN)x]n- was formed due to the strong interaction between Cu2+ and CN- leading to fluorescence recovery (89 % for NIPF-Cu2+). In addition, a detection limit of 3.6 × 10-8 M was obtained by fluorescence titration. Meanwhile, it was demonstrated that the sensor achieved 93 %-105 % recovery of Cu2+ in the tested environmental samples, and the practicability of Cu2+ and CN- detection were verified using hydrogels test, with significant color changes observed under 365 nm light. Accordingly, the fluorescent probe NIPF was used to recognize Cu2+ and CN- by the "on-off-on" sensors.

Lead (Pb) is a heavy metal known for its adverse effects on both human health and the environment. In recent years, the industrial utilization of Pb2+ has surged, underscoring the imperative need for efficient measurement methods. In this study, a rapid and simple photochemical method was used to synthesize thioglycolic acid (TGA)-stabilized CdTe/ZnSe core-shell quantum dots (QDs). These CdTe/ZnSe QDs emit vibrant green fluorescence and exhibit remarkable quenching in the presence of Pb2+ ions. This property enables the development of an on-site on/off sensor without the necessity of additional modifications. The proposed sensor possesses an outstanding sensitivity to Pb2+, with a detection limit and linear range of 31.8 nM and 50 nM-10 µM, respectively. Importantly, the selectivity of this fluorescence-based sensor was validated by analyzing various positively and negatively charged ions. Furthermore, the developed sensor showed reliable performance against real river, agricultural, and tap water, as confirmed by Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) analysis. Additionally, CdTe/ZnSe QDs immobilized on glass slides were successfully employed for on-site water sample analysis, providing a versatile solution for environmental monitoring.

Due to their exceptional optical properties and adjustable functional characteristics, hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs) demonstrate significant potential in applications such as sensing, information encryption. However, studies on the synthesis of HOFs designed to construct multifunctional platforms are scant. In this work, we report the synthesis of a new fluorescent HOF by assembling melem and isophthalic acid (IPA), designated as HOF-IPA. HOF-IPA exhibited good selectivity and sensitivity towards Fe3+, making it suitable as a fluorescent sensor for Fe3+ detection. The sensor achieved satisfactory recoveries ranging from 97.79 % to106.42 % for Fe3+ sensing, with a low relative standard deviation (RSD) of less than 3.33 %, indicating significant application potential for HOF-IPA. Due to the ability of F- to mask the electrostatic action on the surface of Fe3+ and inhibit the photoelectron transfer (PET) of HOF-IPA, the HOF-IPA - Fe3+ system can be utilized as a fluorescent "off-on" sensor for F- detection. Additionally, owing to the colorless, transparent property of HOF-IPA in aqueous solution under sunlight and its blue fluorescence property under UV light (color) or microplate reader (fluorescence intensity), HOF-IPA based ink can be used for various types of information encryption, and all yielding favorable outcomes.

N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) as a class of thiols is commonly used in the treatment of lung diseases, detoxification and prevention of liver damage. In this paper, 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) coated and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) attached copper nanoclusters (4-MBA@PVP-CuNCs) were successfully synthesized using a simple one-pot method with an absolute quantum yield of 10.98 %, and its synthetic conditions (like effects of single/double ligands and temperature) were studied intensively. Then Hg2+ could quench the fluorescence of the 4-MBA@PVP-CuNCs and its fluorescence was restored with the addition of NAC. Based on the above principles, an off-on switching system was established to detect NAC. That is, the 4-MBA@PVP-CuNCs-Hg probe was prepared by adding Hg2+ to switch off the fluorescence of the CuNCs by static quenching, and then NAC was added to switch on the fluorescence of the probe based on the chelation of NAC and Hg2+. Moreover, the effects of metal ion types and mercury ion doses for the probe construction were also further discussed. The method showed excellent linearity in the range of 0.05-1.25 µM and low detection limit of 16 nM. Meanwhile, good recoveries in real urine, tablets and pellets were observed, which proved the reliability of the method and provided a convenient, fast and sensitive method for NAC detection.

Understanding the in vivo transport process provides guidelines for designing ideal nanoparticles (NPs) with higher efficacy and fewer off-target effects. Many factors, such as particle size, morphology, surface potential, structural stability, and etc., may influence the delivering process of NPs due to the existence of various physiological barriers within the body. Herein, we summarise the distinct influences of NP physicochemical properties on the four consecutive in vivo transport steps: (1) navigating with bloodstream within blood vessels, (2) transport across vasculature walls into tumour tissues, (3) intratumoural transport through the interstitial space, and (4) cellular uptake & intracellular delivery by cancerous cells. We found that the philosophy behind the current consensus for NP design has certain similarities to the "Yin-Yang" theory in traditional Chinese culture. Almost all physicochemical properties, regardless of big or small sizes, long or short length, positive or negative zeta potentials, are double-edged swords. The balance of potential benefits and side effects, drug selectivity and accessibility should be fully considered when optimising particle design, similar to the "Yin-Yang harmony". This paper presents a comprehensive review of the advancements in NPs research, focusing on their distinct features in tumour targeting, drug delivery, and cell uptake. Additionally, it deliberates on future developmental trends and potential obstacles, thereby aiming to uncover the ways these characteristics influence the NPs' biological activity and provide theoretical guidance for the targeted delivery of NPs.

On-water rowing performance consists of the integration of physical and technical attributes. This exploratory study aimed to describe key physical and technical variables for elite and junior rowers and examine the associations and predictive capacity of these variables with on-water rowing performance outcomes. Twenty-eight junior (16 females, 16 ± 0.8 years and 12 males, 17 ± 0.7 years) and 24 elite rowers (12 females, 24 ± 2.7 years and 12 males, 27 ± 2.6 years) completed an on-water, single sculling biomechanics assessment combined with a series of physical, strength and power tests. Elite men and women were superior in mean gate force, distance per stroke and recovery distance compared to junior groups as determined by independent t-tests and effect size appraisal (p < 0.017, d > 1.2). Large associations (p < 0.01) were evident between anthropometry, strength and power assessments with the on-water measures of catch angle, mean gate force, recovery distance and boat speed. Differences in ROM and flexibility attributes did not distinguish between elite and junior rowers. Linear discriminant analysis revealed that individual rowers can be appropriately categorised by sex and performance level based on their physical and technical attributes. This battery of testing with world-class athletes represents an excellent level of ecological validity for the assessment of rowers pertinent to on-water performance.

Following a proposal to emend Appendix 9 of the International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes with guidelines to regulate the use of connecting vowels in compound names after stems ending in the same vowel, I here report the outcome of the ballot on this proposal by the members of the International Committee on Systematics of Prokaryotes. The new guidelines to be incorporated in Appendix 9 are presented.

BACKGROUND: The article describes attitudes towards vaccinations in Poland in relation to issues such as voluntary versus compulsory vaccinations, the method of financing vaccinations, the method of organizing and carrying out vaccinations, the cognitive and educational aspect of vaccines (how to obtain knowledge about vaccines) and the preferred model of work and research on new vaccines. Taking into account these issues, the authors have created four ideal models of preferred vaccination policies: (a) the market model; (b) the state model; (c) the vaccine hesitancy model; and (d) the civic-social model. This perspective makes it possible to better understand and learn about the various motives behind the attitudes of anti-vaccination movements, as well as to notice cracks and divisions among vaccination supporters and their attitudes towards the financing and organization of vaccinations. METHODS: The study was carried out using the CATI method on a representative random-quota sample of Polish society of 1000 people aged 18 and over. The study took age, sex, education and the size of the place of residence into account. Additionally, in the Socio-demographic factors influencing attitudes towards vaccination practices in Poland section, we used the chi-squared test and regression analysis of factors influencing vaccination practices in Poland. PASW Statistics 18 (a version of SPSS) software was used for statistical analysis. Significant correlations were demonstrated at a significance level of 0.05% Pearson. RESULTS: This article has shown that attitudes towards vaccinations are embedded in broader divisions and orientations related to the vision of the social order: the role of the state, the organization of healthcare and payments for vaccinations and medical services, as well as preferred ways of knowledge production in society and work on new vaccines. The political sympathies and the age of the respondents were the most important variables influencing vaccination behaviour. The education of the respondents was less important. CONCLUSIONS: A few years after the peak of the pandemic, the scope of anti-vaccination attitudes in Polish society ranges from 20% of the population (dogmatic anti-vaxxers) to 30% (vaccine hesitancy occurring depending on attitudes towards vaccinations).

Ensuring the detection sensitivity of both RNA-derived and DNA-derived target genes in a single reaction has posed a significant challenge for on-site detection of plant pathogens. This challenge was addressed by developing a one-tube dual RT-RAA assay combined with LFS for the rapid on-site detection of pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) and four Colletotrichum species causing anthracnose in Solanaceous crops. By testing four different combinations of primer groups, two combinations were precisely adjusted within the dual RT-RAA system to balance amplification efficiency and maintain consistent levels of amplification in crude plant samples. Utilizing commercially accessible small-scale equipment and following a streamlined optimization strategy, the assay achieved a limit of detection of 0.32 copies/µL of target genes in the reaction. Importantly, it demonstrated no cross-reactivity with other plant pathogens, thereby affirming the high sensitivity and specificity of the developed dual RT-RAA-LFS detection assay. Moreover, the entire process took only 25 min from sample collection to the visible presentation of results. The assay was validated with 60 field samples and 10 seed samples, producing results consistent with reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Notably, it successfully detected PMMoV in systemic leaves without visible symptoms three days post-inoculation, underscoring its effectiveness in early disease detection. This streamlined strategy offers a valuable approach for rapid, low-cost, and highly sensitive on-site simultaneous detection of RNA genome-contained PMMoV and DNA genome-contained Colletotrichum species.

Multiple-step on-line preconcentration, a combination of at least two stacking techniques has been developed to increase the sensitivity in capillary electrophoresis (CE) for analytes in various samples. It is usually conducted sequentially, or in some cases, synergistically, where different stacking modes occur simultaneously. Multiple-step techniques allow simultaneous preconcentration and separation of various kinds of analytes in different complex samples in a single CE run. This review aims to provide recent advances in multiple-step on-line preconcentration techniques in CE. We critically review technical papers published for the last 7 years up until July 2024, subsequently organized according to the combination of the main stacking techniques, that is, field amplification, large volume sample stacking, transient isotachophoresis, micelle to solvent or micelle to cyclodextrin stacking, and others. The procedures, fundamental mechanism, analytical figures of merits achieved, and their feasibility for complicated sample matrices are reviewed.

In-vitro maturation (IVM) is the process of cultivating early-stage follicles from the primordial to the antral stage and facilitating the maturation of oocytes outside the body within a supportive environment. This intricate procedure requires the careful coordination of various factors to replicate the natural ovarian conditions. Advanced techniques for IVM are designed to mimic the natural ovarian environment and enhance the development of follicles. Three-dimensional (3D) culture systems provide a more biologically relevant setting for follicle growth compared to traditional two-dimensional (2D) cultures. Traditional culture systems, often fail to support the complex process of follicle development effectively. However, modern engineered reproductive tissues and culture systems are making it possible to create increasingly physiological in-vitro models of folliculogenesis. These innovative methods are enabling researchers and clinicians to better replicate the dynamic and supportive environment of the ovary, thereby improving the outcomes of IVM offering new hope for fertility preservation and treatment. This paper focuses on the routine 3D culture, and innovative 3D culture of ovary and follicles, including a tissue engineering scaffolds, microfluidic (dynamic) culture system, organ-on-chip models, EVATAR system, from a clinical perspective to determine the most effective approach for achieving in-vitro maturation of follicles. The effects of traditional and on-farm hatching systems on broiler performance and health under a subclinical necrotic enteritis (NE) challenge were evaluated in this study. A 2×2 factorial study explored the effects of place of hatch (on-farm hatched [OFH] vs. hatchery hatched [HH]) and NE challenge (nonchallenged vs. challenged) on broilers. Cobb 500 eggs (∼E19) were acquired from a commercial hatchery; 840 eggs were placed in pens on clean shavings in prewarmed floor pens and allowed to hatch out, while 927 eggs were placed in a hatcher set under standard practices. On day (d) of hatch, all chicks were weighed and randomly distributed to 4 treatments (8 replicate pens each and 30 birds/pen). The OFH birds were placed immediately after sorting while HH birds were placed back in the hatcher overnight to simulate commercial hatchery procedures. After placing HH birds, feed and litter in the challenge group pens were sprayed with a live oocyst coccidia vaccine as a predisposing factor to NE. The small intestines of 3 male chicks per pen were scored for NE lesions (n = 24) on d 8 (peak NE challenge) and jejunal samples were collected from 1 bird per pen for RNA extraction and qPCR on d 8 and d 14. Data were analyzed using JMP Pro17 and significance between treatments was identified by LSD (P ≤ 0.05). Regardless of the hatching system, the subclinical NE challenge caused a significant reduction in average daily gain (ADG) and average daily feed intake (ADFI), and increased feed conversion ratio (FCR) until d 28 (P ≤ 0.05). Moreover, OFH birds exhibited significantly better growth (P ≤ 0.05) through d 28 but had similar performance to HH birds by d 42. There were no significant differences in NE lesion scores between HH and OFH groups. In conclusion, OFH system resulted in better broiler performance compared to HH system under both no-challenge and challenge conditions during the starter and grower periods. This practice may hold potential for further exploration by the industry as an alternative to traditional hatching, aiming to improve the welfare and productivity of broilers.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to identify associated risk factors of distal adding-on phenomenon in Lenke 1A/B and 2A/B adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients and establish the corresponding prediction model. METHODS: The clinical data of 119 Lenke 1A/B and 2A/B AIS patients were retrospectively analyzed. Preoperative, first erect (FE) radiographic parameters and radiographic parameters at the last follow-up were measured. Patients were divided into the adding-on group and the no adding-on group according to whether the adding-on phenomenon was observed at the last follow-up. Univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to establish the corresponding prediction model. RESULTS: Adding-on affected 39 (32.8%) patients at the last follow-up. Risser sign and 19 radiographic parameters showed significant differences between the two groups by univariate analysis. Stepwise logistic regression analysis found that the Risser sign and so on five predictor variable, and the nomogram was drawn. The calibration curve showed that the model fitted well. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve is 0.949. And the decision curve analysis curve model within the threshold range for interventions to improve clinical outcomes. There was no significant difference in SRS-22 scores between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: This study established a prediction model with adding-on in Lenke 1A/B and 2A/B AIS patients. The nomogram contains five predictive variables, which can effectively predict the probability of adding-on phenomenon during follow-up, and may have greater clinical value for the treatment and prevention of adding-on phenomenon.

BACKGROUND: The identification of tumor deposits (TD) currently plays a limited role in staging for colorectal cancer (CRC) aside from N1c lymph node designation. The objective of this study was to determine the prognostic impact, beyond American Joint Committee on Cancer N1c designation, of TDs among patients with primary CRC. METHODS: Patients who had resected stage I-III primary CRC diagnosed between 2010 and 2019 were identified from the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. Cancer-specific survival (CSS) stratified by TD status and lymph node (N) status was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method and multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression analyses. RESULTS: In total, 147,783 patients with primary CRC were identified. TDs were present in 15,444 patients (10.5%). The presence of TDs was significantly associated with adverse tumor characteristics, including advanced pathologic stage, nodal status, and metastasis status. The presence of TDs was associated with worse CSS (hazard ratio [HR], 3.12; 95% confidence interval [CI], 3.02-3.22), as it was for each given N category (e.g., N2a and TD-negative [HR, 2.50; 95% CI, 2.37-2.64] vs. N2a and TD-positive [HR, 3.75; 95% CI, 3.49-4.03]). The presence of multiple TDs was also associated with decreased CSS for each given N category compared with a single TD (e.g. N2a with one TD [HR, 3.09; 95% CI, 2.65-3.61] vs. N2a with two or more TDs [HR, 4.32; 95% CI, 3.87-4.82]). CONCLUSIONS: TDs were identified as an independent predictor of a worse outcome in patients with CRC. The presence of TDs confers distinctly different CSS and provides important prognostic information among patients with CRC and warrants further investigation as a unique variable in future iterations of CRC staging.

Cerebrovascular diseases (CVDs) include conditions such as stroke, cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) and cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD), which contribute significantly to global morbidity and healthcare burden. The pathophysiology of CVD is complex, involving inflammatory, cellular and vascular mechanisms. Recently, research has focused on triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2), an immune receptor predominantly found on microglia. TREM2 interacts with multiple signalling pathways, particularly toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), inhibiting patients' inflammatory response. This receptor plays an essential role in both immune regulation and neuroprotection. TREM2 deficiency or dysfunction is associated with impaired microglial responses, exacerbated neurodegeneration and neuroinflammation. Up until recently, TREM2 related studies have focused on neurodegenerative diseases (NDs), however a shift in focus towards CVDs is beginning to take place. Advancements in CVD research have focused on developing therapeutic strategies targeting TREM2 to enhance recovery and reduce long-term deficits. These include the exploration of TREM2 agonists and combination therapies with other anti-inflammatory agents, which may synergistically reduce neuroinflammation and promote neuroprotection. The modulation of TREM2 activity holds potential for innovative treatment approaches aimed at improving patient outcomes following cerebrovascular insults. This review compiles current research on TREM2, emphasising its molecular mechanisms, therapeutic potential, and advancements in CNS disease research.
