RESUMO

Antimony smelting activities damage the soil and vegetation surroundings while generating economic value. However, no standardized methods are available to diagnose the extent of soil degradation at antimony smelting sites. This study developed a standardized framework for assessing soil quality by considering microbial-induced resilience and heavy metal contamination at Xikuangshan antimony smelting site. The soil resilience index (SRI) and soil contamination index (SCI) were calculated by Minimum Data Set and geo-accumulation model, respectively. After standardized by a multi-criteria quantitative procedure of modified Nemerow's pollution index (NPI), the integrated assessment of soil quality index (SQI), which is the minimum of SRINPI and SCINPI, was achieved. The results showed that Sb and As were the prominent metal(loid) pollutants, and significant correlations between SQI and SRI indicated that the poor soil quality was mainly caused by the low level of soil resilience. The primary limiting factors of SRI were Fungi in high and middle contaminated areas, and Skermanella in low contaminated area, suggesting that the weak soil resilience was caused by low specific microbial abundances. Microbial regulation and phytoremediation are greatly required to improve the soil quality at antimony smelting sites from the perspectives of pollution control and resilience improvement. This study improves our understanding of ecological effects of antimony smelting sites and provides a theoretical basis for ecological restoration and sustainable development of mining areas.

RESUMO

Introduction: Optimization techniques, such as linear programming, can be used to estimate the minimum cost of a nutrient-adequate food basket, to determine if individuals or households can afford nutritious diets. These cost estimates typically account for seasonal fluctuations but often overlook significant disruptions in the availability of affordable nutritious food that can severely impact food and nutrition security. Methods: This paper proposes a tree-based method, the binary search tree, to assess the resilience of the cost estimate of the minimum-cost food basket. In particular, this method aims to identify indispensable foods in these baskets - those whose unavailability would lead to a substantial cost increase. The binary search tree operates by iteratively excluding essential food items while ensuring the construction of minimum-cost nutritious baskets. It considers all relevant combinations of foods up to a specified size and avoids unnecessary optimizations, thereby saving computation time. We describe how the resulting tree can be evaluated and condensed to capture only the necessary information for decision makers. The construction and evaluation of the binary search tree are independent of the (dietary) restrictions or type of optimization model (i.e., linear, non-linear or integer) included. Results: In general, the binary search tree can identify all (combinations of) foods whose exclusion leads to a significant cost increase of a nutritious food basket. Furthermore, it can detect possible substitute effects between foods and identify key limiting nutrients. A case study is presented in which the binary search tree is applied to data from Ebonyi, Nigeria, modeled using linear programming. We report all combinations of up to five foods that, when unavailable, can impact food and nutrition security in Ebonyi. Conclusion: The BST can provide insights into local food and nutrition security when facing drastic disruptions in access to nutritious foods by identifying indispensable foods. Its results can be used to inform and design interventions in the context of humanitarian operations.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Individuals who have experienced severe traumatic events are estimated to have a post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) prevalence rate ranging from 10 to 50%, while those not affected by trauma exposure are often considered to possess psychological resilience. However, the neural mechanisms underlying the development of PTSD, especially resilience after trauma, remain unclear. This study aims to investigate changes of cortical morphometric similarity network (MSN) in PTSD and trauma-exposed healthy individuals (TEHI), as well as the associated molecular alterations in gene expression, providing potential targets for the prevention and intervention of PTSD. METHODS: We recruited PTSD patients and TEHI who had experienced severe earthquakes, and healthy controls who had not experienced earthquakes. We identified alterations in the whole-brain MSN changes in PTSD and TEHI, and established associations between these changes and brain-wide gene expression patterns from the Allen Human Brain Atlas microarray dataset using partial least squares regression. RESULTS: At the neuroimaging level, we found not only trauma-susceptible changes in TEHI same as those in PTSD, but also unique neurobiological alterations to counteract the deleterious impact of severe trauma. We identified 1444 and 2214 genes transcriptionally related to MSN changes in PTSD and TEHI, respectively. Functional enrichment analysis of weighted gene expression for PTSD and TEHI revealed distinct enrichments in Gene Ontology biological processes and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathways. Furthermore, gene expression profiles of astrocytes, excitatory neurons, and microglial cells are highly related to MSN abnormalities in PTSD. CONCLUSIONS: The formation of resilience may be by an active compensatory process of the brain. The combination of macroscopic neuroimaging changes and microscopic human brain transcriptomics could offer a more direct and in-depth understanding of the pathogenesis of PTSD and psychological resilience, shedding light on new targets for the prevention and treatment of PTSD.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: In recent years, health systems worldwide have been confronted with several crises such as natural disasters or the COVID-19 pandemic, that affected lives and health of many people. In light of waves of infections and heat, climate change is considered to be the biggest health threat of the 21st century. Strengthening individual and organizational crisis resilience in healthcare settings thus becomes a crucial factor in maintaining care quality and protecting vulnerable patients during such crises. The RESILARE project therefore aimed to develop and evaluate quality indicators that support primary care practices in preparing for and adapting to crisis-related challenges. METHODS: In a three-phased process, indicator development was based on systematic literature research and qualitative data, a two-stage expert panel process, and pilot testing in a maximum of n = 35 ambulatory practices during an outreach visit. Practice-individual indicator-related status and benchmarking information were provided via feedback reports to complete the audit and feedback program. A mixed-methods process evaluation used semistructured interviews with participating General practitioners and nonphysician health professionals to explore support and challenges for the implementation of the derived set of quality indicators. Two online surveys were conducted to evaluate all indicators and the two-part feedback report. Qualitative data were analyzed inductively using a thematic analysis approach. Survey data were analyzed descriptively. RESULTS: A total of n = 32 indicators covered four domains: (1) individual resilience, (2) crisis prevention, (3) organizational resilience, and (4) climate resilience. N = 34 practices participated in the piloting and the process evaluation. Participants generally attributed a high relevance to the domains, and considered the indicator set suitable for implementation into existing quality management systems. Planning and implementation of measures that strengthen crisis resilience in practices were triggered or intensified by piloting the indicators and by the two-part feedback report. The identified challenges involved the volume of indicators and practice-individual implementation of renewable energy sources on rented premises. Participants expressed their desire for peer exchange regarding proven concepts for crisis resilience.

RESUMO

Mountainous ethnic tourism lands are important social-ecological system types. With tourism as the main disturbance factor, the theory of social-ecological system resilience provides a new way to realize the sustainable development of ethno-tourism in mountainous areas. This study divides the social-ecological system into social, economic, and ecological subsystems. It constructs an evaluation index system to assess the resilience of ethnic tourism destinations in mountainous areas, considering vulnerability and adaptability. We investigate 64 counties in the Wuling Mountain area and use set-pair analysis to assess the resilience index of the social-ecological system from 2000 to 2020 and reveal the temporal and spatial characteristics. Obstacle degree models and a genetic algorithm-back propagation neural network are utilized to determine the influencing factors and predict future development trends. The following results were obtained: (1) Temporally, the resilience index shows a steady upward trend, reaching a moderate level. The resilience of the social subsystem fluctuates and rises; the economic subsystem exhibits slow, fast, and slow growth rates with occasional abrupt changes; and the ecological subsystem demonstrates a stable, slightly increasing trend. (2) Spatially, the resilience index is high at the edges and low in the central area, exhibiting a concave distribution. Most counties have moderate or higher resilience. The social and ecological subsystems have low resilience in the south and high resilience in the north. The resilience of the economic subsystem is high at the edges and low in the central area. (3) On the distribution of major obstacle factors, the first two are similar at the county level, and the last three are significantly different. The similarity of the barrier factors is related to the degree of regional proximity of the county, and overall, the similarity is decreasing from north to south and from west to east in the distribution pattern within the area. and to a certain extent, it is affected by terrain and geomorphology. (4) The spatial distribution of the resilience index is similar in 2025 and 2030. The index decreases slightly and then increases annually, with a lower growth rate in the south than in the north. Lower values occur in the northern and southwestern parts, whereas higher values are observed around high-value areas. The region as a whole will develop in a coordinated and integrated manner in the future.

RESUMO

Background: Black men who have sex with men (BMSM) face multiple minority stressors (e.g., homophobia, racism, and presumed HIV status) that may indirectly erode their confidence in pursuing HIV testing uptake through exacerbating alcohol use disorder (AUD). Objectives: Using cross-sectional data from 203 community-based BMSM (71.4% as homosexual with a mean age of 26 years) living in a Southern US city, we conducted a causal mediation and moderation analysis to investigate in/direct pathways linking minority stressors, AUD risk, and self-efficacy of HIV testing, including how resilience may moderate these associations. Results: Our mediation analysis revealed that AUD risk accounted for 32.1% of the total effect of internalized homonegativity (ßtotal effect = -0.424; SE=0.071; p<0.001), 28.6% of the total effect of experienced homophobia (ßtotal effect = -0.684; SE=0.122; p<0.001), and 15.3% of the total effect of perceived HIV stigma (ßtotal effect = -0.361; SE=0.164; p<0.05) on HIV testing self-efficacy. Resilience significantly moderated the associations of experienced homophobia (ß = -0.049; SE=0.011; p<0.001), internalized homonegativity (ß = -0.065; SE=0.027; p<0.01), and perceived HIV stigma (ß = -0.034; SE=0.013; p<0.05) with AUD risk. Resilience also significantly moderated the associations of experienced homophobia (ß = -0.073; SE=0.021; p<0.01), internalized homonegativity (ß = -0.082; SE=0.012; p<0.001), perceived HIV stigma (ß = -0.037; SE=0.039; p<0.05), and AUD risk (ß = -0.021; SE=0.015; p<0.05) with HIV testing self-efficacy. Conclusions: Our study provides important implications in identifying multilevel sources for building resilience among BMSM to buffer the effects of minority stress on AUD risk and improve HIV testing outcomes.

RESUMO

A self-reinforcing positive feedback is regarded as a critical process for maintaining alternative stable states (ASS); however, identification of ASS and quantification of positive feedbacks remain elusive in natural ecosystems. Here, we used large-scale field surveys to search for ASS and a positive feedback mechanism under a wide range of habitats on the Tibetan Plateau. Using multiple methods, we proved that three stable states exist that accompany alpine marsh degradation. Positive feedbacks between changing soil moisture and plant community composition forced the ecosystem into another stable state, and the alteration of water use efficiency (WUE) of the component species contributed to this shift. This study provides the first empirical evidence that positive feedback loops maintain ASS in the alpine marsh ecosystem on the Tibetan Plateau. Our research revealed the powerful driving role of plants in transitions between states, which may support the conservation and restoration of global alpine marsh ecosystems.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: On October 7th, 2023, Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel, triggering a conflict with Israel in the Gaza Strip. This ongoing war, now six months old, has also seen threats from Hezbollah in Lebanon, as well as from Yemen and Iran. The precarious security situation along Israel's southern and northern borders led to extensive evacuations, with residents relocating within Israel under uncertain conditions concerning their return and property safety. This study compares resilience (societal, SR; community, CR; and individual, IR), hope, morale, distress symptoms (anxiety and depression symptoms), and perceived danger between general Hebrew-speaking adults and evacuee adults a few months post-conflict initiation. METHODS: Data was collected using structured self-reported questionnaires focusing on resilience and coping strategies, administered through two online panel companies. The general population data was collected from January 14-21, 2024 (N = 1,360), and the evacuees' data from March 1-9, 2024 (N = 372; 133 from the north, 239 from the south). RESULTS: Evacuees reported lower SR and CR, hope, and morale, and higher distress symptoms and perceived danger compared to the general population. No differences in IR were found. Regression analyses identified different primary predictors of SR for each group: hope for the general population and governmental support for evacuees. Additionally, IR significantly predicted outcomes only among evacuees, whereas age, religiosity, and education were significant predictors solely in the general population. One notable similarity emerged: CR served as the second most influential predictor in both samples. CONCLUSIONS: The entire population of Israel is affected by the ongoing war, yet evacuees endure a disproportionately severe impact, with potential for increased harm as the conflict persists. The adjustment to a new wartime emergency routine is more complex for evacuees than for the general population. It is crucial for policy and decision-makers to address the distinct differences between evacuees and the general populace to effectively meet their specific needs. Yet, it should be acknowledged that the evacuees represent a heterogenic group, necessitating a detailed subdivision into subgroups to accurately assess and address their unique challenges.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis (MS), a leading cause of disability in young adults worldwide, including in Iran, affects their whole life so common care is no longer effective. In this regard, context-based approaches should be considered for a holistic care delivery that accords with the patients' inputs. We aimed to explore patients' understanding of MS and their personal experiences of living with this disease. METHODS: A qualitative descriptive study was conducted. The data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 17 patients. These patients were selected using a purposive sampling method, and the data were analyzed using a conventional content analysis approach. FINDINGS: Three main categories and nine subcategories were identified: Thunder and Lightning strike in the form of Displeasure, Social wrong beliefs, Experiences of Constraints, Interference with Life Stages and Dark Spots on the Horizon of the Future; Subtle Beam consisting of Extrinsic Light Radiation, Reflection of Individual Effort and Formation of a Rainbow by Resilience and Hope for a Bright Future. CONCLUSION: By offering multidimensional support, patients reported a shift from fear to a vibrant life. Although research often focuses on the negative aspects of MS, this study recognizes both positive and negative aspects. These findings can contribute to future interventional research. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: During the explanation of research goals and consent acquisition, participants were reminded that sharing their experiences could provide valuable insights benefiting others coping with or at risk of the same disease. Additionally, during data analysis, codes extracted were reviewed and improved with active participant involvement.

RESUMO

AIM: This cross-sectional study investigates the factors that contribute to academic resilience among nursing students during COVID-19 pandemic. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. METHODS: A survey was conducted in a general hospital between November and December 2022. The Nursing Student Academic Resilience Inventory (NSARI) model was used to assess the academic resilience of 96 nursing students. The Boruta method was then used to identify the core factors influencing overall academic resilience, and rough set analysis was used to analyse the behavioural patterns associated with these factors. RESULTS: Attributes were categorised into three importance levels. Three statistically significant attributes were identified ("I earn my patient's trust by making suitable communication," "I receive support from my instructors," and "I try to endure academic hardship") based on comparison with shadow attributes. The rough set analysis showed nine main behavioural patterns. Random forest, support vector machines, and backpropagation artificial neural networks were used to test the performance of the model, with accuracies ranging from 73.0% to 76.9%. CONCLUSION: Our results provide possible strategies for improving academic resilience and competence of nursing students.

RESUMO

Background: Resilience and passion for work are associated with better psychosocial wellbeing and professional quality of life for healthcare workers. Objective: To evaluate the characteristics and efficacy of interventions to promote resilience and passion for work in health settings. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted across six databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, Scopus, and PsycINFO) for articles published between January 2003 and February 2023. Studies utilizing both quantitative and qualitative methodologies were included. Methodological quality assessment was performed using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Data from the included studies were analyzed using a convergent mixed methods design. Results: A total of 33 studies met the inclusion criteria. All reported on interventions designed to enhance resilience for healthcare workers. None reported on interventions to enhance passion for work. Interventions included mindfulness-based programs, psychoeducation workshops, stress management techniques, and professional coaching. Interventions varied widely in terms of delivery modality, format, content, intensity, duration, and outcomes. Of the studies reporting quantitative data, most (21/29) reported statistically significant improvements in resilience. Of the studies reporting qualitative data, all reported a positive impact of the intervention on resilience and psychological well-being. Conclusions: Overall, interventions designed to enhance resilience in health care settings appear to be effective across a variety of healthcare settings. The diversity of effective intervention approaches, delivery formats, intensity and duration suggest that brief, light-touch or self-directed online interventions may be equally as effective as more intensive, lengthy, in-person or group-based interventions. This provides health care organisations with the opportunity to select and flexibly implement interventions that align with organisational, and staff needs and preferences. Future research needs to explore effective approaches to building passion for work.

RESUMO

Introduction: The Broaden-and-Build Theory of positive emotions is one of the best known and applied theories in Positive Psychology. It argues that positive emotions initiate an upward movement by opening up the mind and broadening thoughts and thus represents a counter model to the vicious circle-models of clinical psychology. The number of studies directly testing this theory in all components is scarce, ambiguities in the model impede clear inference. Method: To draw a conclusive picture on within-model processes, we applied network modeling on the components of the theory across two studies (N 1 = 312; N 2 = 302). Results: In both studies, the positive relationship between positive emotions, resources and life outcomes is well-supported, yet the role of broadening, as an intermediary component within these is questioned. Discussion: As the broadening component consistently deviated from the model's predictions and thus did not contribute to the model as expected in either study, the validity of the Broaden-and-Build Theory in its current conceptualization is challenged, and our results point to the need to reassess the role of broadening.

RESUMO

This study assessed the impact of distancing measures during the COVID-19 pandemic on cancer diagnostic activities, including gastrointestinal endoscopy (GIE). It analyzed GIE volumes from 2020 to 2022 in comparison to 2018-2019, considering variations in resilience linked to socioeconomic status (SES). The analysis utilized data from the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Services database, covering the entire population and medical facilities. Diagnostic GIE rates (2018-2022) in Gwangju Metropolitan City and Jeonnam province were examined, comparing age-standardized rates (ASRs) by area, gender, and SES. The results indicated a decline in ASRs for colonoscopy and endoscopic gastroduodenoscopy (EGD) in 2020 compared to 2018-2019, followed by an increase in 2021-2022, except for EGD in the medical aid population. SES based and rural-urban disparities were evident in the recovery of GIE rates. The findings suggest that equity-focused strategies are needed to ensure equitable healthcare access among different socioeconomic groups after pandemic.

RESUMO

Introduction: The United Arab Emirates is among the countries affected by substance use disorders (SUDs), which have economic and social impacts. Relapse after successful rehabilitation is a major issue in the treatment of SUD. Several factors increase the risk of relapse in patients with SUD, such as craving and negative social experiences. Resilience could empower patients struggling with SUD. This study aims to explore levels of resilience and relapse risk in adult Emirati patients diagnosed with SUD, and also the possible correlation between the two variables. Methods: Two hundred eighty-six Emirati adult patients with SUD completed a self-administered questionnaire for demographics, resilience (Connor and Davidson Resilience Scale), and relapse risk (Stimulant Relapse Risk Scale). Descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, SD, etc.) were used to describe study participants and variables. Inferential statistics were used to analyze the relationships, associations, and correlations between resilience and relapse risk, the main variables, and the participants demographics. Result: Participants' mean total score for resilience was 72.92 out of a maximum possible score of 100 (SD = 16.99), while their mean total score for relapse risk was 59.07 out of a maximum possible score of 105 (SD = 12.23). Furthermore, examining the correlation between the resilience subscales and the relapse risk subscales revealed similar significant, negative, low-to-moderate correlations between all the subscales (r = -0.486). Discussion: Protective and risk factors to enhance resilience and reduce relapse risk in patients with SUD were discussed.

RESUMO

Objectives: The purpose is to examine the relationship between Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), protective factors, and select maladaptive coping behaviors in postsecondary students. Participants: Undergraduate students attending Dalhousie University. Methods: An online anonymous survey was conducted. Zero order one-tailed correlations were computed to measure relationships between ACEs, levels of maladaptive coping behaviors and protective factors. A structural equation mediation model examined direct and indirect pathways between measures. Results: 42.5% of respondents (n = 327) reported ≥3ACEs. Higher ACEs were associated with higher expression of maladaptive coping behaviors. Respondents with high ACEs and low levels of protective factors reported lower levels of hope and forgiveness and higher levels of stress and rumination. Conclusion: Higher levels of protective factors were associated with lower levels of maladaptive coping behaviors in students with high ACEs.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Recent studies have suggested that the capability to resist deterioration of physiological characteristics could be an independent factor contributing to endurance performance. This study aimed at investigating whether prolonged low-intensity exercise induces shifts in the lactate threshold, and whether fatigue-induced changes differ between the sexes. METHODS: A total of 31 (15 females) recreational runners performed an incremental treadmill test and a 90-min low-intensity exercise (LIT90) on two separate occasions. The LIT90 was performed at 90% of the first lactate threshold speed (LT1v), derived from the incremental treadmill test. The LT1v was determined from a 5-stage (3 min) submaximal threshold test (SubmaxLT), performed before and after LIT90. The SubmaxLTs were followed by a 10/5 reactivity jump test. Respiratory gases, heart rate (HR), and HR-derived detrended fluctuation analysis alpha 1 (DFA-a1) were assessed every 15 min during the LIT90. RESULTS: A significant decrease (p < 0.01) was observed in the LT1v in females (- 5.8 ± 4.4%) and in males (- 5.3 ± 6.4%). The HR increased (p < 0.001) similarly in females (5.9 ± 3.1%) and in males (5.5 ± 3.6%) during the LIT90, while energy expenditure increased (3.1 ± 4.5%, p = 0.013) in females but remained unchanged in males (0.9 ± 3.1%). Change in DFA-a1 during the LIT90 was the only marker that correlated significantly with the relative change of LT1v (r = 0.463, p = 0.013). CONCLUSION: LIT90 induced significant decreases in the LT1v, and the changes were comparable between sexes. DFA-a1 could be a potential intra-session marker of durability.

RESUMO

Heavy metals pose significant threats to ecosystems and human health due to their persistence and bioaccumulation. In Thailand, rapid industrialization, extensive agriculture, and urban development have exacerbated heavy metal pollution in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. This systematic review, conducted according to PRISMA guidelines, evaluates study designs and methodologies to assess heavy metal bioaccumulation in Thai fauna, with a focus on ecological and health impacts. The review reveals that fish, particularly from families like Cyprinidae and Cichlidae, account for 42.11 % of studies, with species such as swamp eel, Henicorhynchus siamensis, Arius maculatus, Osteogeneiosus militaris, Puntioplites proctozystron, and Channa striata showing significant bioaccumulation. Molluscs (31.58 %), including Tegillarca granosa and Filopaludina martensi, serve as critical bioindicators of aquatic pollution due to their filter-feeding habits. Amphibians and crustaceans, like Fejervarya limnocharis and Fenneropenaeus merguiensis, also demonstrate vulnerability to heavy metal contamination. Key contamination hotspots include urban waterways in Bangkok, industrial discharges in Songkhla Lake, and mining sites in Loei Province, highlighting widespread environmental and health impacts. Despite extensive research, gaps remain, particularly concerning benthic scavengers and detritivores, which are vital for ecosystem functions. The review underscores the need for targeted monitoring and mitigation, including stricter regulations on industrial discharges, improved waste treatment, and better management of agricultural runoff. While metals like cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) are well-studied, further research on less-examined metals and species-specific bioaccumulation patterns is crucial to enhancing environmental management, supporting biodiversity conservation, and improving ecosystem resilience in Thailand.

RESUMO

Positive emotions can reduce disease susceptibility during infectious challenges in humans, and emerging evidence suggests similar effects in farm animals. Because play behaviour may support a positive emotional state in pigs, this study investigates whether rearing pigs with regular intermittent play opportunities enhances disease resilience when challenged with porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV). Litters were assigned to either play (PLY; n = 5 L) or control (CON; n = 4 L) treatments at birth. In PLY, play was promoted with extra space and enrichment items for three hours daily from five days of age (doa). At weaning (25 ± 2 doa; mean ± SD), 28 pigs (14/treatment) were selected for a disease challenge, based on weight, sex, and sow. The pigs were transported to a disease containment facility and at 43 ± 2 doa (day 0 post-inoculation, DPI) inoculated with PRRSV. Skin lesions, blood, rectal temperature, clinical signs, body weight, and behaviour were collected pre- and post-inoculation. Play opportunities for PLY continued every other day until euthanasia of all pigs at 65 ± 2 doa (22 DPI). PLY pigs exhibited fewer skin lesions following transport and throughout the infection compared to CON. Although the viral load did not differ between treatments, PLY pigs had a lower probability of experiencing moderate and severe respiratory distress, with a shorter duration. PLY also performed better throughout the infection, showing higher ADG and greater feed efficiency. The immune response differed as well. PLY pigs had fewer monocytes on 8 DPI than CON, with levels returning to baseline by 21 DPI, whereas CON levels exceeded baseline. Regardless of day of infection, lymphocyte counts tended to be lower in PLY than in CON, and white blood cells and neutrophils were also lower, but only in slow-growing pigs. PLY pigs continued to play during the infection, demonstrating less sickness behaviour and emphasizing the rewarding properties of play. Results suggest that PLY pigs were less affected by PRRSV and developed increased resilience to PRRSV compared to CON. This study demonstrates that rearing pigs in an environment supporting positive experiences through provision of play opportunities can enhance resilience against common modern production challenges, underscoring the value of positive welfare in intensive pig farming.

RESUMO

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the mediating effects of psychological resilience and psychological well-being for caregivers at nursing homes on the relationship between insomnia and elder maltreatment. As the world is aging quickly and the number of older individuals cared for by formal caregivers has been increasing, this study's results could help create intervention programs to minimize the occurrence of older people's maltreatment. Materials and Methods: A total of 431 care workers who met all criteria, from 21 care service centers for older adults in Fukuoka, Japan, completed the Conditions of Maltreatment Scale, Caregivers' Belief in Ideal Care, Insomnia Severity Index, WHO-5 Well-Being Index, and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale-10. Results: A multivariate analysis of variance revealed that participants with no insomnia had greater resilience, higher psychological well-being, and greater belief in ideal care and to treated older clients less roughly compared to participants with insomnia. Psychological resilience and well-being were significant mediators in the relationship between insomnia, rough care, and beliefs in ideal care. Conclusion: As formal caregivers are in urgent demand, society should take care of them. The most effective and successful intervention for improving their physical and psychological well-being should be initiated at the individual and organizational levels.
