RESUMO

Neonatal exposure to noxious stimuli such as repeated heel lances can cause behavior changes. In the NICU sucrose given prior to procedures attenuates the immediate behavioral response to noxious stimuli but may not ameliorate the long-term consequences, and treatment with 24 % sucrose can brain structure and behavior in adult rodents. We used a rat model to determine whether paw pricks during the neonatal period alter social interaction and/or paw withdrawal thresholds (PWT) in adolescence, and if 7 % sucrose mitigates these effects. One male and one female pup per litter was assigned to each of six experimental groups (no paw prick (control), 1 paw prick (1PP), or 2PP, ± sucrose). Hind paws were pricked once or twice each day between postnatal day (P)3 and P10. Social behavior and PWT were tested in adolescence using the modified social interaction test and von Frey filaments, respectively. Social behavior was altered in the 2PP group; total time interacting was lower in 2PP rats, primarily due to less time sniffing a play partner. Sucrose did not mitigate effects of paw prick but trended to alter social behaviors in males; it decreased time in contact but increased social motivation (movement toward a play partner). PWTs were higher in 2PP animals, this was not altered by sucrose. Thus, rat pups exposed to paw pricks in the neonatal period have some altered behaviors in adolescence. The nature of the behavioral changes is sex-dependent, but sucrose did not mitigate these changes.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) damages the trauma site, leading to progressive and secondary structural defects rostral and caudal to the injury. Interruption of ascending and descending pathways produce motor, sensory, and autonomic impairments, driving the need for effective therapies. In this study, we address lesion site repair and promoting descending projections using a combined biomaterial-neuromodulation strategy in a rat model of cervical contusion SCI. To promote tissue repair, we used Chitosan fragmented physical hydrogel suspension (Cfphs), a biomaterial formulation optimized to mitigate inflammation and support tissue remodeling. To promote descending projections, we targeted the corticospinal motor system with dual motor cortex-trans-spinal direct current neuromodulation to promote spared corticospinal tract (CST) axon sprouting rostral and caudal to SCI. Cfphs, injected into the lesion site acutely, was followed by 10 days of daily neuromodulation. Analysis was made at the chronic phase, 8-weeks post-SCI. Compared with SCI only, Cfphs alone or in combination with neuromodulation prevented cavity formation, by promoting tissue remodeling at the injury site, abrogated astrogliosis surrounding the newly formed tissue, and enabled limited CST axon growth into the remodeled injury site. Cfphs alone significantly reduced CST axon dieback and was accompanied by preserving more CST axon gray matter projections rostral to SCI. Cfphs + neuromodulation produced sprouting rostral and caudal to injury. Our findings show that our novel biomaterial-neuromodulation combinatorial strategy achieves significant injury site tissue remodeling and promoted CST projections rostral and caudal to SCI.

Tetraphenyloporphyrin derivatives are a useful scaffold for developing new pharmaceuticals for photodynamic therapy (PDT) and the photodiagnosis (PD) of cancer. We synthesized new sulfonamide fluorinated porphyrin derivatives and investigated their potential as photosensitizers and real-time bioimaging agents for cancer. We found that 5,10,15,20-tetrakis-[2',3',5',6'-tetrafluoro-4'-methanesulfamidyl)phenyl]bacteriochlorin (F4BMet) has intense absorption and fluorescence in the near-infrared, efficiently generates singlet oxygen and hydroxyl radicals, has low toxicity in the dark, and high phototoxicity. We increased its bioavailability with encapsulation in Pluronic-based micelles, which also improved the photodynamic effect. F4BMet exhibits pH-dependent properties (lower pH promoted its aggregation), and a GlyGly buffer was used to effectively solubilize the compound. In vitro findings with 2D cell culture were complemented with human-induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived organoids. F4BMet in P123 micelles showed enhanced efficacy compared to F4BMet in the GlyGly formulation. F4BMet was further evaluated in real-time bioimaging and PDT of BALB/c mice bearing CT26 tumors. After i.v. injection, the photosensitizer was visible in the tumor area 3 h after injection. The most successful therapeutic approach proved to be tumor-targeted PDT using P123-encapsulated F4BMet illuminated 24 h after administration with a light dose of 42 J/cm2, which led to a 30% long-term cure rate.

Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) and hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) usually have different infection routes, and coinfection is relatively rare. This study examines the clinical and etiological characteristics of coinfection by these two pathogens to provide important references for clinical diagnosis and treatment. Blood samples from 22 clinically diagnosed patients with HFRS were collected for molecular detection of HFRS and common tick and mouse borne diseases. Inoculate the blood of six severe and critically patients into cells to isolate and proliferate potential viruses, and retest the cell culture to determine the pathogen. In addition, complete data were collected from these 22 HFRS and concurrent SFTS patients, and white blood cells (WBCs), platelet (PLT), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine (Cr) and other data were compared and analyzed. A total of 31 febrile patients, including 22 HFRS patients and 9 SFTS patients, were collected from September 2021 to October 2022. Among these HFRS patients, 11 were severe or critical. Severe and critical HFRS patients were characterized by rodent exposure history, pharyngeal and conjunctival hyperemia, abnormal WBC and PLT counts, and elevated BUN and Cr values. Virus isolation and molecular detection on blood samples from 6 patients showed that three of the six severe patients were positive for hantaan virus (HTNV), and two of the three HTNV positives were also positive for SFTS bunyavirus (SFTSV). The two coinfected patients exhibited different clinical and laboratory characteristics compared to those infected by either virus alone. Coinfection of HTNV and SFTSV leads to severe and complex hemorrhagic fever. Laboratory characteristics, such as the indicators of WBC, PLT, BUN, and Cr, may differ between HFRS and SFTS. These findings have implications and provide references for the diagnosis and treatment of coinfected cases.

Babesia and Theileria species (Apicomplexa: Piroplasmida) are tick-borne protozoan parasites that can cause mild to severe infection in humans, wildlife, livestock and companion animals. To date, reports on the molecular study of piroplasms from wild living small mammals and their ticks are still limited, especially in Asia. This study encompassed an extensive survey involving 907 liver samples and 145 ixodid ticks from 16 different species of small mammals (Rodentia, Lagomorpha, Eulipotyphla). These were collected in 13 cities and counties in northern China. DNA extracts from these samples were screened for the presence of piroplasm 18S rRNA gene. Samples that tested positive were further evaluated for other genetic markers of piroplasms, including the cox1 gene and the ITS1-5.8S rDNA-ITS2 region. Several piroplasm species were identified, including Babesia sp. tavsan2, Babesia occultans, Theileria sp. Xinjiang, Theileria equi, and Theileria sp. Kalecik. Among these, Theileria sp. Xinjiang was shown to be the most prevalent. Importantly, Babesia sp. tavsan2 was identified in the tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus from the Yarkand hare and Theileria sp. Kalecik in Hyalomma asiaticum from the long-eared hedgehog, in line with the detection of these pathogens in tissue samples of the relevant hosts. This study further disclosed the presence of DNA from B. occultans and T. equi, typically found in cattle and horses respectively, with an additional discovery in small mammals. Moreover, Theileria sp. Kalecik, which was first detected in small-sized mammals, and Babesia sp. tavsan2, were both reported for the first time in China.

Introduction: Broussonetia papyrifera is a dioecious plant that is rich in various metabolites and widely distribute in Asia. Microtus fortis is a rodent that often causes damage to crops, especially in the Dongting Lake region of China. There is a wide overlap in the distribution areas for the above species and the M. fortis feeds on the leaves of the B. papyrifera. Preliminary experiments have shown that the reproduction of M. fortis is inhibited after feeding on the leaves of the B. papyrifera. Methods: In order to explore the potential of using B. papyrifera to develop botanical pesticides, we investigated the palatability and reactive substances. The feeding frequency of M. fortis on B. papyrifera leaves to that of on daily fodder and Carex brevicuspis that is the primary food for the wild population were compared. We also attempted to identify the responsive substances in B. papyrifera leaves that were bitten by M. fortis using metabolome analysis. Results: In general, B. papyrifera leaves exhibited a stronger attraction to M. fortis. M. fortis foraged B. papyrifera leaves more frequently, and the intake was higher than that of the other two. Differential metabolites were screened by comparing normal leaves and leaves bitten by M. fortis, meanwhile with the intervention of clipped leaves. A total of 269 substances were screened, and many of these were involved in the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, including terpenoids and alkaloids. These substances may be related to the defense mechanism of B. papyrifera against herbivores. Discussion: These findings support further research examining animal-plant interactions and simultaneously provide insights into the utilisation of B. papyrifera resources and the management of rodents. The good palatability and the defense of B. papyrifera leaves suggest that they have the potential to contribute in development of plant rodenticide.

Galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) is an unavoidable risk to astronauts that may affect mission success. Male rodents exposed to 33-beam-GCR (33-GCR) show short-term cognitive deficits but reports on female rodents and long-term assessment are lacking. We asked: What are the longitudinal behavioral effects of 33-GCR on female mice? Also, can an antioxidant/anti-inflammatory compound (CDDO-EA) mitigate the impact of 33-GCR? Mature (6-month-old) C57BL/6J female mice received CDDO-EA (400 µg/g of food) or a control diet (vehicle, Veh) for 5 days and Sham-irradiation (IRR) or whole-body 33-GCR (0.75Gy) on the 4th day. Three-months post-IRR, mice underwent two touchscreen-platform tests: (1) location discrimination reversal (tests behavior pattern separation and cognitive flexibility, abilities reliant on the dentate gyrus) and (2) stimulus-response learning/extinction. Mice then underwent arena-based behavior tests (e.g. open field, 3-chamber social interaction). At the experiment's end (14.25-month post-IRR), an index relevant to neurogenesis was quantified (doublecortin-immunoreactive [DCX+] dentate gyrus immature neurons). Female mice exposed to Veh/Sham vs. Veh/33-GCR had similar pattern separation (% correct to 1st reversal). There were two effects of diet: CDDO-EA/Sham and CDDO-EA/33-GCR mice had better pattern separation vs. their respective control groups (Veh/Sham, Veh/33-GCR), and CDDO-EA/33-GCR mice had better cognitive flexibility (reversal number) vs. Veh/33-GCR mice. One radiation effect/CDDO-EA countereffect also emerged: Veh/33-GCR mice had slower stimulus-response learning (days to completion) vs. all other groups, including CDDO-EA/33-GCR mice. In general, all mice showed normal anxiety-like behavior, exploration, and habituation to novel environments. There was also a change relevant to neurogenesis: Veh/33-GCR mice had fewer DCX+ dentate gyrus immature neurons vs. Veh/Sham mice. Our study implies space radiation is a risk to a female crew's longitudinal mission-relevant cognitive processes and CDDO-EA is a potential dietary countermeasure for space-radiation CNS risks.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the impact of chronic dental disease on the nasolacrimal duct of chinchillas using contrast CT dacryocystorhinography. ANIMALS STUDIED: Two 12-year-old female chinchillas with uni- or bilateral ocular discharge and a history of chronic, moderate (Chinchilla 1, one-year) or severe (Chinchilla 2, three-years) dental disease. PROCEDURES: Contrast CT dacryocystorhinography was performed to identify abnormalities in the nasolacrimal duct and dentition, and to correlate those changes. RESULTS: Chinchilla 1 had a focal soft tissue attenuating expansion of the maxillary bone rostral to the first left premolar interpreted as possible abscessation causing deviation of the nasolacrimal duct over its dorsomedial margin. The right nasolacrimal duct appeared normal. Chinchilla 2 had periapical abscessation of a retained subgingival left maxillary incisor fragment which extended into the nasal cavity causing focal narrowing and distal dilation of the left nasolacrimal duct. Complete contrast infusion of the right nasolacrimal duct could not be completed on Chinchilla 2. A focal area of superficial corneal fibrosis ipsilateral to the obstructed nasolacrimal duct was also identified in Chinchilla 2. Treatment consisted of occlusal adjustments to correct the coronal elongation, systemic antibiotics (metronidazole and either marbofloxacin or azithromycin), and topical tear replacement therapy and diclofenac as needed. Ocular discharge decreased in both chinchillas but did not resolve long-term in either animal. CONCLUSIONS: Chronic dental disease including periapical abscessation in chinchillas can obstruct the nasolacrimal duct, leading to impaired tear drainage. Management of dental disease is crucial to maintain patency of the nasolacrimal duct.

Enterocytozoon bieneusi is a zoonotic pathogen prevalent in mammalian and avian hosts across the globe. Wild small mammals, being abundant worldwide, serve as important sources of zoonotic disease transmission to humans. Here, 227 fecal samples were collected from five rodent and shrew species on 34 pig farms in China to investigate the prevalence and molecular characterization of E. bieneusi. The overall prevalence of E. bieneusi was 17.18% (39/227), with a distribution of 23.53% (32/136) in Rattus tanezumi, 8.62% (5/58) in Rattus norvegicus, and 8.00% (2/25) in Mus musculus. Eight E. bieneusi genotypes were identified, comprising four known genotypes: D (n = 8), EbpC (n = 8), PigEBITS7 (n = 9), and EbpA (n = 2), and four novel genotypes: CHPR1 (n = 7), CHPR2 (n = 1), CHPR3 (n = 2), and CHPR4 (n = 2). This study is the first to report E. bieneusi in rodents from pig farms in Henan, Shaanxi, and Shanxi Provinces in China. The host range of genotype EbpC was expanded with its first detection in M. musculus and R. tanezumi. All identified E. bieneusi genotypes belong to group 1, raising concerns about these sympatric rodents being reservoirs of zoonotic transmission. Moreover, the widespread distribution of genotype EbpC suggests potential cross-species transmission between sympatric rodents and domestic pigs. Our findings highlight the potential role of sympatric rodents in facilitating the spillover of E. bieneusi from pig farms, which could pose a potential public health threat.


Title: Les rongeurs sympatriques sauvages vivant dans les élevages porcins peuvent faciliter la propagation d'Enterocytozoon bieneusi. Abstract: Enterocytozoon bieneusi est un pathogène zoonotique répandu mondialement chez les hôtes mammifères et aviaires. Les petits mammifères sauvages, abondants dans le monde entier, constituent d'importantes sources de transmission de maladies zoonotiques à l'homme. Ici, 227 échantillons fécaux ont été collectés auprès de cinq espèces de rongeurs et de musaraignes dans 34 élevages porcins en Chine pour étudier la prévalence et la caractérisation moléculaire d'E. bieneusi. La prévalence globale d'E. bieneusi était de 17,18 % (39/227), avec une distribution de 23,53 % (32/136) chez Rattus tanezumi, 8,62 % (5/58) chez Rattus norvegicus et 8,00 % (2/25) chez Mus musculus. Previously, we reported an immediate emergence of new lower jaw input to the anterior forepaw barrel subfield (FBS) in primary somatosensory cortex (SI) following forelimb deafferentation. However, a delay of 7 weeks or more post-amputation results in the presence of this new input to both anterior and posterior FBS. The immediate change suggests pre-existing latent lower jaw input in the FBS, whereas the delayed alteration implies the involvement of alternative sources. One possible source for immediate lower jaw responses is the neighboring lower jaw barrel subfield (LJBSF). We used anatomical tracers to investigate the possible projection of LJBSF to the FBS in normal and forelimb-amputated rats. Our findings are as follows: (1) anterograde tracer injection into LJBSF in normal and amputated rats labeled fibers and terminals exclusively in the anterior FBS; (2) retrograde tracer injection in the anterior FBS in normal and forelimb-amputated rats, heavily labeled cell bodies predominantly in the posterior LJBSF, with fewer in the anterior LJBSF; (3) retrograde tracer injection in the posterior FBS in normal and forelimb-amputated rats, sparsely labeled cell bodies in the posterior LJBSF; (4) retrograde tracer injection in anterior and posterior FBS in normal and forelimb-amputated rats, labeled cells exclusively in ventral posterior lateral (VPL) nucleus and posterior thalamus (PO); (5) retrograde tracer injection in LJBSF-labeled cell bodies exclusively in ventral posterior medial thalamic nucleus and PO. These findings suggest that LJBSF facilitates rapid lower jaw reorganization in the anterior FBS, whereas VPL and/or other subcortical sites provide a likely substrate for delayed reorganization observed in the posterior FBS.

Rat bite fever is characterized by a clinical triad of symptoms, fever, rash and arthritis. It is transmitted by rodents and mainly due to infection by Streptobacillus moniliformis, a fastidious bacterium carried by Rattus norvegicus. This case report presents the case of a patient who developed septic arthritis and fever after a wild rat bite, with subsequent isolation of S. moniliformis from the joint fluid. Upon reviewing 45 other published case reports of S. moniliformis osteoarticular infections following contact with either a rat or its secretions, it was firstly observed that the rat bite fever clinical triad was incomplete in over half of the cases, mainly because rash was infrequently observed among adult patients. Secondly, the clinical presentation of rat bite fever is quite non-specific and rodent exposure is not mentioned by patients in a third of cases upon admission. Altogether, diagnosing rat bite fever is a significant clinical challenge suggesting that it might be significantly underdiagnosed. In addition to these clinical aspects, no evidence was found supporting immunological mechanisms, as suggested in some literature. Instead, when excluding five improperly performed cultures, S. moniliformis was cultured in 25 reported cases and identified twice by direct PCR sequencing amounting to a detection rate of 90% (n = 27/30) on joint fluids. Cultures should be performed in medium containing yeast extract, complete peptic digest of animal tissue and at least 5% blood. Knowing that S. moniliformis is very sensitive to many antibiotics thereby making the culture negative, direct 16S rRNA gene sequencing on joint fluid is an alternative method in the case of clinical and cytological evidence of osteoarticular infections with sterile culture of joint fluid.

Peripheral nerve repair is daily activity for several microsurgeons. Numerous nerve repair techniques are applied, including neurorrhaphy, nerve grafting and nerve transfer, depending on the nature and extent of the injury. However, these techniques become unfeasible when the distal nerve end is not preserved during the peripheral nerve injury or a segment of the muscle is transferred without the nerve supplying it. However, direct muscle neurotization (DMN) achieves muscle reinnervation by suturing the nerve directly into the muscle tissue, without requiring a distal nerve end for coaptation. Despite promising results in the literature, DMN is not widely adopted in clinical practice. Animal models may help in advancing novel therapeutic approaches, due to their anatomic and physiologic similarities to humans. This review highlights the current scientific understanding and recent advancements in DMN as well as the animal models and target muscle that have been used in the past to investigate the basic principles behind this surgical technique. The presented information should aid in establishing the clinical importance of DMN in peripheral nerve injury.

Rodent-infested bald spots are crucial indicators of rodent infestation in grasslands. Leveraging Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) remote sensing technology for discerning detrimental bald spots among plateau pikas has significant implications for assessing associated ecological hazards. Based on UAV-visible light imagery, we classified and recognized the characteristics of plateau pika habitats with five supervised classification algorithms, i.e., minimum distance classification (MinD), maximum likelihood classification (ML), support vector machine classification (SVM), Mahalanobis distance classification (MD), and neural network classification (NN) . The accuracy of the five methods was evaluated using a confusion matrix. Results showed that NN and SVM exhibited superior performance than other methods in identifying and classifying features indicative of plateau pika habitats. The mapping accuracy of NN for grassland and bald spots was 98.1% and 98.5%, respectively, with corresponding user accuracy was 98.8% and 97.7%. The overall model accuracy was 98.3%, with a Kappa coefficient of 0.97, reflecting minimal misclassification and omission errors. Through practical verification, NN exhibited good stability. In conclusion, the neural network method was suitable for identifying rodent-damaged bald spots within alpine meadows.

Background: Few studies have previously evaluated the long-term impact of initiating the combined use of alcohol and cocaine early-in-life during adolescence. Our preclinical study characterized changes in affective-like behavior and/or voluntary ethanol consumption emerging later on in adulthood induced by a prior adolescent drug exposure, as well as tested therapeutical interventions (i.e., cannabidiol or ketamine) to prevent the observed effects. Methods: We performed three independent studies with male and female Sprague-Dawley rats, treated in adolescence (postnatal days, PND 29-38) with non-contingent paradigms of ethanol, cocaine, their combination or vehicle. Later on, adult rats were (1) scored for their affective-like state (forced-swim, elevated-plus maze, novelty-suppressed feeding, sucrose preference), (2) allowed to freely drink ethanol for 6 weeks (two-bottle choice), or (3) treated with cannabidiol or ketamine before given access to ethanol in adulthood. Results: No signs of increased negative affect were observed in adulthood following the adolescent treatments. However, adolescent ethanol exposure was a risk-factor for later developing an increased voluntary ethanol consumption in adulthood, both for male and female rats. This risk was similar when ethanol was combined with adolescent cocaine exposure, since cocaine alone showed no effects on later ethanol intake. Finally, rats exposed to adolescent ethanol and pretreated in adulthood with cannabidiol (and/or ketamine, but just for females) reduced their ethanol voluntary consumption. Conclusion: Our data provided two therapeutical options capable of preventing the impact of an early drug initiation during adolescence by decreasing voluntary ethanol consumption in adult rats.

Seasonal reproduction is a mammalian behavior that has developed over an extended evolutionary period and requires animals to respond to external environmental changes to facilitate reproduction. In this study, we investigated the role of PIWI-interacting RNA (piRNA) in the seasonal reproduction of plateau zokors (Eospalax baileyi). piRNA expression profiles in plateau zokor testes during both breeding and non-breeding seasons were examined. The piRNAs had a distinctive ping-pong signature and ranged from 27 to 32 nt with a peak at 30 nt. Testicular piRNAs predominantly aligned to specific genomic regions, including repeat and gene regions. Analysis of the piRNA-mRNA interaction network and functional enrichment of differentially expressed piRNAs targeting mRNAs revealed their association with testicular development and spermatogenesis. Significantly, PIWIL4 is an mRNA gene that interacts with piRNA and exhibits high expression levels within the testes during the non-breeding phase. This study provides a foundation to improve our understanding of piRNA regulatory mechanisms during testicular development and spermatogenesis in seasonally reproducing animals and, specifically, in the plateau zokor.

Mental time travel is the projection of the mind into the past or future, and relates to experiential aspects of episodic memory, and episodic future thinking. Framing episodic memory and future thinking in this way causes a challenge when studying memory in animals, where demonstration of this mental projection is prevented by the absence of language. However, there is good evidence that non-human animals pass tests of episodic memory that are based on behavioural criteria, meaning a better understanding needs to be had of the relationship between episodic memory and mental time travel. We argue that mental time travel and episodic memory are not synonymous, and that mental time travel is neither a requirement of, nor an irrelevance to, episodic memory. Mental time travel can allow improved behavioural choices based on episodic memory, and work in all species (including humans) should include careful consideration of the behavioural outputs being measured. RESUMO

The theory and practice of statistics comprises two main schools of thought: frequentist statistics and Bayesian statistics. Frequentist methods are most commonly used to analyze animal-based laboratory data, while Bayesian statistical methods have been implemented less widely and may be relatively unfamiliar to practitioners in experimental science. This paper provides a high-level overview of Bayesian statistics and how they compare with frequentist methods. Using examples in rodent toxicity research, we argue that Bayesian methods have much to offer laboratory animal researchers. We advocate for increased attention to and adoption of Bayesian methods in laboratory animal research. Bayesian statistical theory, methods, software, and education have advanced significantly in the last 30 years, making these tools more accessible than ever.

Accurate assessment of post-stroke deficits is crucial in translational research. Recent advances in machine learning offer precise quantification of rodent motor behavior post-stroke, yet detecting lesion-specific upper extremity deficits remains unclear. Employing proximal middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) and cortical photothrombosis (PT) in mice, we assessed post-stroke impairments via the Staircase test. Lesion locations were identified using 7 T-MRI. Machine learning was applied to reconstruct forepaw kinematic trajectories and feature analysis was achieved with MouseReach, a new data-processing toolbox. Lesion reconstructions pinpointed ischemic centers in the striatum (MCAO) and sensorimotor cortex (PT). Pellet retrieval alterations were observed, but were unrelated to overall stroke volume. Instead, forepaw slips and relative reaching success correlated with increasing cortical lesion size in both models. Striatal lesion size after MCAO was associated with prolonged reach durations that occurred with delayed symptom onset. Further analysis on the impact of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in the PT model revealed no clear treatment effects but replicated strong effect sizes of slips for post-stroke deficit detection. In summary, refined movement analysis unveiled specific deficits in two widely-used mouse stroke models, emphasizing the value of deep behavioral profiling in preclinical stroke research to enhance model validity for clinical translation.

PURPOSE: To study the adaptation of bacteria to the natural γ-background of mountains and anthropogenic emissions from nuclear power plants; to establish the main factors of variability and speciation of bacteria. METHOD: Analysis of materials on the radiation background and its impact on living organisms in the landscape of Armenia, calculation of the absorbed dose by microbes due to rock radiation. RESULTS: The review shows the death, reproduction, radioresistance and speciation of bacteria in changing conditions of low variable natural and anthropogenic γ-background. CONCLUSION: We assume that γ-rays from rocks activate cellular epigenetic mechanisms that regulate genome expression, signaling and, ultimately, variability of bacteria. Some of them have already been studied, others require research.

RESUMO

Although significant progress has been made in developing preclinical models for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), few have encapsulated the essential biological and clinical outcome elements reflective of the human condition. We conducted a comprehensive literature review of English-language original research articles published from 1990 to 2023, sourced from PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science, aiming to collate studies that provided a comparative analysis of physiological, metabolic, and hepatic histological characteristics between MASLD models and control groups. The establishment of a robust metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver rodent model hinges on various factors, including animal species and strains, sex, induction agents and methodologies, and the duration of induction. Through this review, we aim to guide researchers in selecting suitable induction methods and animal species for constructing preclinical models aligned with their specific research objectives and laboratory conditions. Future studies should strive to develop simple, reliable, and reproducible models, considering the model's sensitivity to factors such as light-dark cycles, housing conditions, and environmental temperature. Additionally, the potential of diverse in vitro models, including 3D models and liver organ technology, warrants further exploration as valuable tools for unraveling the cellular mechanisms underlying fatty liver disease.
