The genetic basis of somatic cell identity in avian sex determination is still unknown. FET1, an endogenous retrovirus, has previously been demonstrated to be expressed during gonad development. Here, we report expression of FET1 related transcripts in non-gonadal tissue during chicken development. Both the forward and reverse FET1 related transcripts were seen in various developing muscle tissues. Both the "full-length" and partial FET1 transcripts were expressed; the latter however showed a more ubiquitous expression pattern. Female-specific gonadal expression of both sense and antisense transcripts was also confirmed. An anti-FET1 antibody, however, failed to distinguish between the predicted FET1 protein and other endogenous retroviral proteins expressed at E6.5. Our data suggest a possible role for FET1 related transcripts in sex-specific differences in muscle size and growth rate in the chickens.

Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera L.) is a dioecious plant, with male and female plants having distinct characteristics. Female plants are responsible for fruit production, and only approximately 10% of male plants are necessary for effective pollination. The determination of plant sex occurs during the first flowering, a process that typically spans 3-7 years. However, this extended timeframe results in significant time and valuable plantation resources being expended in the maintenance of trees. To address this issue, the study focused on sex identification of date palms using DNA markers. The research aimed to develop sex-specific markers for certain date palm cultivars, employing the high annealing temperature random amplified polymorphic DNA (HAT-RAPD) technique for accurate and reliable sex identification. In this investigation, 45 RAPD primers underwent screening in both male and female date palm plants to pinpoint sex-specific markers. Out of the total primers tested, only one, OPW-18, exhibited a correlation with sex. OPW-18 produced a distinct band of approximately 400 bp, consistently present in all male plants but absent in all female plants. The male-specific fragment from OPW-18 was cloned and sequenced to facilitate the development of sex-specific sequence-characterized amplified region (SCAR) primers. The outcomes revealed that the newly crafted SCAR primer pair, mspW18-2F and mspW18-2R, successfully amplified a unique fragment of 283 bp exclusively in male plants. This capability allowed the identification of 100% of male plants in the KL1 and Barhi cultivars. These markers prove to be efficient, reliable, and reproducible for early-stage sex identification in plants.

Background: Differences in medical treatment between women and men are common and involve out-of-hospital emergency care, the intensity of pain treatment, and the use of antifibrinolytic treatment in emergency trauma patients. If woman and man receive different antifibrinolytic treatment in highly-standardized major transplant surgery is unknown. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study on patients who underwent liver transplantation at Heidelberg University Hospital, Heidelberg, Germany between 2004 and 2017. Logistic regression analyses were performed to determine if sex is associated with the administration of TXA during liver transplantation. Secondary endpoints included venous thrombotic complications, graft failure, mortality, myocardial infarction, hepatic artery thrombosis, and stroke within the first 30 days after liver transplant as well as length of hospital stay and length of intensive care unit stay. Results: Out of 779 patients who underwent liver transplantation, 262 patients received TXA. Female sex was not associated with intraoperative administration of TXA [adjusted OR: 0.929 (95% CI 0.654; 1.320), p = 0.681]. The secondary endpoints graft failure (13.2% vs. 8.4%, women vs. men, p = 0.039), pulmonary embolism (3.4% vs. 0.9%, women vs. men, p = 0.012), stroke (1.7% vs. 0.4%, women vs. men, p = 0.049), and deep vein thrombosis (0.8% vs. 0%, women vs. men, p = 0.031) within 30 days after liver transplantation were more frequent in women. Mortality, myocardial infarction, and other secondary endpoints did not differ between groups. However, in women, the use of TXA was associated with a lower rate in thromboembolic complications. Conclusion: Our data indicate that different from other scenarios with massive bleeding complications the administration of TXA during liver transplantation is not associated with sex. However, sex is associated with the risk for complications, and in woman TXA might have a preventive effect on the rate of thromboembolic complications. Reasons underlying the observed sex bias rate remain uncertain.

BACKGROUND: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have been suspected as potential environmental obesogens, with several mechanisms being proposed, including the role of metabolomics. However, current epidemiological studies have yielded inconclusive findings. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to estimate the associations of prenatal exposure to PFAS with offspring adiposity measures, and to explore the potential metabolic pathways underlying these associations. METHODS: A total of 464 mother-child pairs from the Sheyang Mini Birth Cohort Study (SMBCS) were included in this study. Cord serum concentrations of 12 PFAS and urine metabolite profiles at age 10 were obtained from the SMBCS database. Adiposity-related anthropometric measurements and body composition estimates of children aged 10 were used to assess offspring obesity. Multiple linear regression models and quantile g-computation were conducted to estimate the associations of prenatal exposure to individual and multiple PFAS with obesity at 10 years old. Metabolomics analysis was performed to characterize the biological pathways associated with PFAS exposure or obesity, subsequently identifying the overlapping metabolic pathways underlying the PFAS-obesity relationship. RESULTS: Prenatal exposure to several PFAS was significantly associated with elevated obesity-related markers in 10-year-old children. After stratification by sex, the effects were more pronounced in girls. Quantile g-computation results indicated that exposure to higher levels of PFAS mixtures during pregnancy was associated with increased odds of obesity in girls, with PFNA emerging as the predominant driving compound. Untargeted metabolomics results showed that several amino acid metabolic pathways were characterized as the overlapping pathways underlying the above associations. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, our findings suggested the potential obesogenic effects of prenatal exposure to PFAS and offered insight into the possible metabolic mechanisms underlying PFAS-related offspring obesity.

HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: Mountain biking (MTB) is a quickly growing sport, with fractures being the most common injury among MTB athletes. Currently, there is a lack of analysis of MTB fractures based on emergency department (ED) data obtained on a national scale. It was hypothesized that the total number of fractures presenting to United States (US) EDs increased significantly over the last decade, and adult male riders experienced higher rates of fracture and fracture-related hospitalization than other demographics. METHODS: All data was extracted from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), a public database representing approximately 100 US EDs. NEISS was queried for all MTB-related fractures from January 1st, 2013-December 31, 2022. RESULTS: NEISS returned a national estimate (NE) of 35,260 MTB fractures visiting EDs between 2013 and 2022. Fracture injuries increased significantly over the study period, including a 247 % increase from 2019 to 2020. The mechanism of injury most likely resulting in fracture was being thrown from the bike (39.6 %, NE:5,436). The upper extremity was the most commonly fractured body region (32.8 %, NE:11,574), and trunk fractures had the highest rate of hospitalization (44.2 %, NE:3705). Males accounted for the majority of fractures (87.9 %, NE:30,996), and were more likely to be hospitalized than females (22.2 %>17.4 %). Adults (age≥40) were more likely to sustain a fracture (48.8 %) and be hospitalized because of it (25.8 %) than other age groups. Adults were also most likely to fracture their trunk (33.9 %). CONCLUSION: MTB fractures increased significantly from 2013 to 2022, possibly due to the gaining popularity of MTB since COVID-19. The upper extremity was the most frequently fractured body region, and being thrown from the bike was the mechanism most likely to result in a fracture. Adult male riders are at a high risk for trunk fractures, demonstrating the importance of protective equipment such as chest and torso protectors for these athletes. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: III.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the importance of sex as a factor influencing medical care has received increasing attention in the field of intensive care medicine. The objective of this study was to examine the influence of sex in prolonged weaning. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients undergoing prolonged weaning at Thoraxklinik, University Hospital Heidelberg between 12/08 and 12/23 was conducted. Patients with neuromuscular diseases were excluded from the analyses. The risk factors for weaning failure in men and women were identified through stepwise cox-regression analyses. RESULTS: A total of 785 patients were included, of whom 313 (39.9%) were women. 77.9% of the women and 75.4% of the men were successfully weaned from invasive ventilation. In group comparisons and multivariable analyses, sex was not found to be a risk factor for weaning failure. Cox regression analyses were performed separately for both sexes on the outcome of weaning failure, adjusting for relevant covariates. The results indicated that age ≥ 65 years (HR 2.38, p < 0.001) and the duration of IMV before transfer to the weaning centre (HR 1.01/day, p < 0.001) were independent risk factors in men. In women, however, the duration of IMV before transfer (HR 1.01, p < 0.001), previous non-invasive ventilation (HR 2.9, p 0.005), the presence of critical illness polyneuropathy (HR 1.82; p = 0.040) and delirium (HR 2.50, p = 0.017) were identified as relevant risk factors. In contrast delirium was associated with a favourable weaning outcome in men (HR 0.38, p = 0.020) and nosocomial pneumonia as a reason for prolonged weaning in women (HR 0.43; p = 0.032). CONCLUSION: The analyses indicate that there are sex-based differences in the risk factors associated with weaning failure. Further studies, ideally prospective, should confirm these findings to assess whether sex is a factor that should be taken into account to improve weaning outcomes.

Inhaled beta-2 adrenoceptor agonists (iß2A) are routinely used as bronchodilators in the treatment of asthma. However, their cardiac effects in athletes are scarcely examined. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of iß2A on left ventricular (LV) systolic function (SF) by echocardiography in healthy, non-asthmatic female and male endurance athletes. A randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled, balanced, 4-way complete block cross-over study was conducted. Twenty-four healthy athletes (12f/12m: 22.9 ± 2.7/24.4 ± 4.6 years) randomly completed 4 study arms (placebo; salbutamol; formoterol; formoterol + salbutamol). After inhalation of the study medication, the participants performed a 10-min time trial (TT) on a bicycle ergometer. After each TT an echocardiography was performed to determine LVSF. Blood samples were collected pre, post, 3 h and 24 h post TT. In females, total serum concentrations for salbutamol and formoterol were higher. LV ejection fraction (LVEF) and LV global longitudinal strain (LVendoGLS) showed a treatment effect for the whole study group (p < 0.0001) and a sex effect on LVEF (p = 0.0085). In women, there was a significant treatment effect for all medication arms (at least p ≤ 0.01) both on LVEF and LVendoGLS. In men only formoterol and formoterol + salbutamol displayed a treatment effect on LVEF (p = 0.0427, p = 0.0330; respectively), whereas on LVendoGLS only formoterol + salbutamol was significant (p = 0.0473). The iß2A significantly influenced LVSF after an acute bout of exercise in healthy endurance athletes. These effects were even more pronounced when combining both iß2A that supports a dose-dependent effect on cardiac function. Moreover, female athletes had higher serum concentrations of ß2 agonists and stronger effects on LVSF compared to male athletes. This is mainly explained by differences in body weight and related plasma volume and may indicate a potential risk when increasing dose above the tested concentrations. Size differences between males and females are common across the tree of life (termed sexual size dimorphism; SSD), and have fundamental implications for ecology, life history and behaviour of both sexes. Conventionally, SSD is thought to evolve in response to sex-specific sexual selection but more recent work suggests that ecological processes can also promote sex-differences in size. Here, we provide a global test for the role of sexual selection in the evolution of sexual size dimorphism using data from 77 comparative studies spanning the major classes of the animal kingdom. We show that intense sexual selection typically correlates with male-biased SSD across species. Importantly, pre-copulatory but not post-copulatory sexual selection predicts SSD, suggesting a pervasive role of premating male-male competition and female choice to drive sex differences in body size. Collectively, our findings suggest that pre-copulatory sexual selection plays a major role in the evolution of male-biased SSD.

Background: Survival rates following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) show variability across studies, particularly regarding sex-specific outcomes. Relative survival analysis, which considers survival patterns in sex-and age-matched general populations, could help explain this variability. Methods: In a 2011 nationwide South Korean PCI cohort study with 48,783 patients, all-cause death was assessed as the primary outcome over 5 years. Observed and relative survival rates at 5 years conditional on surviving 0 days, 30 days, 1 year, and 2 years were assessed. Sex-specific differences in clinical characteristics were adjusted using propensity score-matching. Results: In the unadjusted analyses, 15,710 females had more cardiovascular risk factors than 33,073 males. Both observed survival (HR 1.28; 95% CI [1.22-1.34]) and relative survival (HR 1.21; 95% CI [1.16-1.27]) were lower in females than males (all p<0.001). In the analyses of 14,454 matched pairs, females showed higher observed survival (HR 0.78; 95% CI [0.74-0.82]), but lower relative survival (HR 1.19; 95% CI [1.13-1.26]), compared to males (all p<0.001). This trend was particularly notable in females aged 60 years or older. These findings persisted in analyses conditional on surviving 30 days, 1 year and 2 years. Conclusion: The adjusted 5-year relative survival of older females was lower than that of age-matched males, highlighting the need for the excessive risk reduction in older females undergoing PCI.

Species lacking distinct secondary sex characteristics, such as differences in size or morphology, are often thought to experience lower levels of sex-specific selection in comparison to highly sexually dimorphic organisms. However, monomorphism in classic visible traits could be a result of genetic or physiological constraints that prevent the sexes from reaching divergent fitness optima. Additionally, biochemical and molecular work have revealed a variety of less easily observed phenotypes that nonetheless exhibit profound dimorphism. Sex-specific selection could act on these more subtle, less visible, traits. We investigate sex-specific selection in the polygynandrous dusky pipefish (Syngnathus floridae), which lacks distinct secondary sexual characteristics such as size, colour and morphological dimorphism. Using experimental breeding populations, we revealed that although males and females have similar opportunities for sexual selection, only males experience significant sexual selection pressures on body size. We also investigated patterns of sex-biased and sex-specific gene expression in gonads, livers and gills, and tested whether genes with highly divergent expression patterns between the sexes are more likely to be tissue-specific, and therefore relieved of genetic constraints. Sex bias in gene expression was widespread, although the reproductive organs had the most sex-biased and sex-specific genes. Sex-specific selection on gene expression in gills was primarily related to immune response, whereas the liver and gonads had a wide variety of cellular processes, as well as reproductive proteins, showing sex-biased expression. These sex-biased genes showed higher organ-specificity in their expression patterns, suggesting that pleiotropic constraints might have historically impacted the evolution of sex-specific expression patterns. Altogether, we find evidence for ongoing and historical sex-specific selection in the dusky pipefish.

This review describes the development of evolutionary studies of sex based on the volvocine lineage of green algae, which was facilitated by whole-genome analyses of both model and non-model species. Volvocine algae, which include Chlamydomonas and Volvox species, have long been considered a model group for experimental studies investigating the evolution of sex. Thus, whole-genomic information on the sex-determining regions of volvocine algal sex chromosomes has been sought to elucidate the molecular genetic basis of sex evolution. By 2010, whole genomes were published for two model species in this group, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Volvox carteri. Recent improvements in sequencing technology, particularly next-generation sequencing, allowed our studies to obtain complete genomes for non-model, but evolutionary important, volvocine algal species. These genomes have provided critical details about sex-determining regions that will contribute to our understanding of the diversity and evolution of sex.

Peltogasterella gracilis (Cirripedia: Rhizocephala), a crustacean parasite of hermit crabs, displays genotypic sex determination. Its larvae are planktonic, and female larvae settle on the host. Subsequently, the females control the host's behavior by spreading a root-like structure called "the interna" within the host's body, and form sacs containing eggs called "the externae" outside the host's body. On the other hand, male larvae settle on immature externae and become dwarf males. The cypris larvae of P. gracilis show sexual dimorphism in size and morphology. However, there is no understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying the sexual dimorphism observed at the larval stage. Here, we conducted a transcriptome analysis and compared the expression of genes in male and female cyprids to better understand their sexual differentiation and settlement processes. A total of 2870 differentially expressed transcripts, comprising 456 female- and 2414 male-biased transcripts were identified. Among the male-biased ones, ionotropic glutamate receptor-, heat shock protein-, acetylcholine-, and homeobox-, cuticle-related transcripts were included. Additionally, 29 gene ontology terms were associated with the sex-specific traits. The present study improves our understanding of sex determination, sexual differentiation, and settlement processes of rhizocephalans.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) neuropathy is a polygenic disorder of peripheral nerves with no effective cure. Thiamine (vitamin B1) is a neurotropic compound that improves neuropathies. Our pilot study characterizes therapeutic potential of daily oral administration of thiamine (100 mg) in CMT neuropathy and its molecular mechanisms. The patient hand grip strength was determined before and after thiamine administration along with the blood levels of the thiamine coenzyme form (thiamine diphosphate, ThDP), activities of endogenous holo-transketolase (without ThDP in the assay medium) and total transketolase (with ThDP in the assay medium), and transketolase activation by ThDP [1 - (holo-transketolase/total transketolase),%], corresponding to the fraction of ThDP-free apo-transketolase. Single cases of administration of sulbutiamine (200 mg) or benfotiamine (150 mg) reveal their effects on the assayed parameters within those of thiamine. Administration of thiamine or its pharmacological forms increased the hand grip strength in the CMT patients. Comparison of the thiamin status in patients with different forms of CMT disease to that of control subjects without diagnosed pathologies revealed no significant differences in the average levels of ThDP, holo-transketolase, or relative content of holo and apo forms of transketolase. However, the regulation of transketolase by thiamine/ThDP differed in the control and CMT groups: in the assay, ThDP activated transketolase from the control individuals, but not from CMT patients. Thiamine administration paradoxically decreased endogenous holo-transketolase in CMT patients; this effect was not observed in the control group. Correlation analysis revealed sex-specific differences in the relationship between the parameters of thiamine status in both the control subjects and patients with the CMT disease. Thus, our findings link physiological benefits of thiamine administration in CMT patients to changes in their thiamine status, in particular, the blood levels of ThDP and transketolase regulation.

BACKGROUND: Telomere length is a biomarker of molecular aging that may be impacted by air pollution exposure starting in utero. We aimed to examine the association between prenatal and early life exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and leukocyte telomere length (LTL) in children and explore sex differences. METHODS: Analyses included 384 mother-child pairs enrolled in the Programming Research in Obesity, Growth, and Environmental Stressors (PROGRESS) birth cohort in Mexico City. Exposure to PM2.5 was estimated at the residential level using a satellite based spatio-temporally resolved prediction model. Average relative LTL was measured in DNA isolated from blood collected at age 4-6 years using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Linear regression models were used to examine the association between average PM2.5 across pregnancy, individual trimesters, first postnatal year, and LTL. Models were adjusted for maternal age and education at enrollment, prenatal environmental tobacco smoke exposure, child sex, age, and body mass index z-score at LTL measurement. Effect modification by sex was investigated with interaction terms and stratification. RESULTS: In trimester specific models, we found an association between 2nd trimester PM2.5 and elongated LTL (ß: 4.34, 95%CI [0.42, 8.42], per 5 µg/m3 increase). There was suggestive effect modification by sex on average 2nd trimester PM2.5 with stronger associations seen in females compared to males (ß: 7.12, [95%CI: 0.98, 13.6] and ß: 1.43 [95%CI: -3.46, 6.57]) per 5 µg/m3 increase respectively. CONCLUSION: Second trimester PM2.5 levels were associated with changes in LTL in early childhood. Understanding temporal and sex differences in PM2.5 exposure may provide insights into telomere dynamics over early life.

Investigating among-individual differences in reproductive success and survival is essential for understanding eco-evolutionary processes. We used 5 years of demographic data from 556 breeding barn owls (Tyto alba) to estimate associations between intrinsic and extrinsic covariates on survival and reproduction throughout the annual cycle. As males and females have distinct roles in reproduction, environmental conditions and individual quality may be differentially linked to their fitness at different time points. Males breeding early and inhabiting prey-rich areas experienced higher reproductive success but faced greater reproductive costs. Indeed, the number of offspring a male cared for was negatively associated with his body condition and survival. However, our results indicate that these influences can be mitigated in males experiencing favourable post-breeding environmental conditions. For female owls, early breeding and high food availability during the breeding period were linked with increased reproductive success. Prey availability during incubation and higher reproductive output were associated with higher survival into the next breeding period in females. Unlike males, females did not exhibit obvious trade-offs between reproductive success and survival. Our research demonstrates trade-offs between fecundity and survival, and that females paired with males able to provide sufficient food experience higher survival and reproduction.

BACKGROUND: Data comparing the performance of sex-specific to overall (non-sex-specific) high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn) cut-points for diagnosing acute coronary syndrome (ACS) are limited. This study aims to compare the safety and efficacy of sex-specific versus overall 99th percentile high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) cut-points. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of the STOP-CP cohort, which prospectively enrolled emergency department patients ≥ 21 years old with symptoms suggestive of ACS without ST-elevation on initial electrocardiogram across eight U.S. sites (January 25, 2017-September 6, 2018). Participants with both 0- and 1-h hs-cTnT measures less than or equal to the 99th percentile (sex-specific 22 ng/L for males, 14 ng/L for females; overall 19 ng/L) were classified into the rule-out group. The safety outcome was adjudicated cardiac death or myocardial infarction (MI) at 30 days. Efficacy was defined as the proportion classified to the rule-out group. McNemar's test and a generalized score statistic were used to compare rule-out and 30-day cardiac death or MI rates between strategies. Net reclassification improvement (NRI) index was used to further compare performance. RESULTS: This analysis included 1430 patients, of whom 45.8% (655/1430) were female; the mean ± SD age was 57.6 ± 12.8 years. At 30 days, cardiac death or MI occurred in 12.8% (183/1430). The rule-out rate was lower using sex-specific versus overall cut-points (70.6% [1010/1430] vs. 72.5% [1037/1430]; p = 0.003). Among rule-out patients, the 30-day cardiac death or MI rates were similar for sex-specific (2.4% [24/1010]) vs. overall (2.3% [24/1037]) strategies (p = 0.79). Among patients with cardiac death or MI, sex-specific versus overall cut-points correctly reclassified three females and incorrectly reclassified three males. The sex-specific strategy resulted in a net of 27 patients being incorrectly reclassified into the rule-in group. This led to an NRI of -2.2% (95% CI -5.1% to 0.8%). CONCLUSIONS: Sex-specific hs-cTnT cut-points resulted in fewer patients being ruled out without an improvement in safety compared to the overall cut-point strategy.

BACKGROUND: End-stage post-traumatic osteoarthritis of the ankle joint may require arthrodesis if conservative treatment fails and a decision against total ankle replacement is made. We aimed to compare the sex-specific differences in outcomes and objectify them using validated specific scores. METHODS: Between 2010 and 2021, 221 patients underwent ankle arthrodesis at our institution, including 143 men (MAA) and 78 women (FAA). In addition to demographic data, the aetiology of osteoarthritis, the Foot Function Index (FFI-D), the Olerud-Molander Score (OMAS), and the Short Form-12 questionnaire (SF-12) were collected in this monocentric study. The mean follow-up time was 5.8 years. End-stage osteoarthritis was mostly due to ankle fractures as a result of sprains, falls, and road traffic accidents. RESULTS: Post-operatively, the mean FFI-D for pain was 17.3 (MAA: 14.7; FAA 22.2) and 43.9 for function (MAA: 41.1; FAA 49.5); the mean OMAS was 58.2; and the mean SF-12 physical component score was 42.5. Women achieved significantly worse results in all scores; only the mental component summary of the SF-12 did not differ between the sexes (p > 0.05). Approximately 34% of women stated that the result in terms of gait pattern was worse than expected (MAA 16.1%; p < 0.05). Again, significantly more men stated that the result was better than expected (MAA: 48.3%; FAA: 31.5%, p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The fact that the clinical results were significantly worse in women after ankle arthrodesis should be considered when determining the indication. However, the expectations of men and women also need to be individually adjusted.

One of the major factors driving the currently ongoing biodiversity crisis is the anthropogenic spread of infectious diseases. Diseases can have conspicuous consequences, such as mass mortality events, but may also exert covert but similarly severe effects, such as sex ratio distortion via sex-biased mortality. Chytridiomycosis, caused by the fungal pathogen Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd) is among the most important threats to amphibian biodiversity. Yet, whether Bd infection can skew sex ratios in amphibians is currently unknown, although such a hidden effect may cause the already dwindling amphibian populations to collapse. To investigate this possibility, we collected common toad (Bufo bufo) tadpoles from a natural habitat in Hungary and continuously treated them until metamorphosis with sterile Bd culture medium (control), or a liquid culture of a Hungarian or a Spanish Bd isolate. Bd prevalence was high in animals that died during the experiment but was almost zero in individuals that survived until the end of the experiment. Both Bd treatments significantly reduced survival after metamorphosis, but we did not observe sex-dependent mortality in either treatment. However, a small number of genotypically female individuals developed male phenotype (testes) in the Spanish Bd isolate treatment. Therefore, future research is needed to ascertain if larval Bd infection can affect sex ratio in common toads through female-to-male sex reversal.

Consistent evidence increasingly highlights the significance of integrating sex and gender medicine to ensure a precision approach according to individual patient needs. Gender discrepancies emerge across various areas, even from pediatric age. The importance of recognizing these differences in pediatric nutrition is critical for the development of targeted nutritional strategies and interventions, particularly in cases of associated pathologies, including obesity, metabolic-associated fatty liver disease, eating disorders, and inflammatory bowel disease. The review highlights the biological and sociocultural factors that contribute to different nutritional needs and health outcomes in male and female children. By examining current evidence, we underscore the necessity for precision medicine approaches in pediatric care that consider these sex- and gender-based differences. Moreover, differences in dietary requirements and dietary patterns between males and females are evident, underscoring the need for precise nutrition strategies for a more accurate management of children and adolescents. This approach is essential for improving clinical outcomes and promoting equitable healthcare practices. This review aims to provide an overview of nutrition-related medical conditions exhibiting sex- and gender-specific discrepancies, which might lead to distinct outcomes requiring unique management and prevention strategies. Future research and public health initiatives should address these differences in designing effective lifestyle education programs and nutrition interventions targeting both children and adolescents.

HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: Basketball-related shoulder dislocations frequently present to emergency departments (EDs) in the US. This study aimed to identify the primary mechanisms, distributions, and trends of these injuries. METHODS: All data was extracted from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS), a public database representing approximately 100 US EDs. NEISS was queried for all basketball-related injuries and shoulder dislocations from January 1, 2013 to December 31, 2022. Clinical narratives were used to assign injury mechanisms and the presence of player contact. RESULTS: Between 2013 and 2022, 52,417 basketball-related shoulder dislocations were reported. 30.9% of all basketball-related shoulder injuries were dislocations, and 30.5% of all joint dislocations occurred at the shoulder. Basketball-related shoulder dislocations decreased significantly from 2013-2022 (p<.001). From 2019 to 2020, a 31.0% decrease was identified. The most common mechanism of shoulder dislocation was falling (36.9%). Males accounted for 92.5% of all shoulder dislocations. However, females were significantly more likely than males to dislocate their shoulders from player contact (15.5% of female dislocations v. 10.0% of male dislocations, p<.001). Only 0.2% of all dislocations resulted in hospitalization. 10.4% of dislocations resulted from contact with another player. Compared to other age groups, young adults (43.3%) and adolescents (42.7%) presented with the majority of shoulder dislocations. Children were more likely to dislocate their shoulder from sustaining a direct blow (25.5%), while all other age groups were more likely to have fallen. Children were also the most likely to sustain a dislocation involving player contact (23.9%). CONCLUSION: Basketball-related shoulder dislocations decreased significantly from 2013 to 2022. Females and children were significantly more likely to present with a dislocation by sustaining player contact. Across all demographics, teaching athletes how to break their falls safely may decrease rates of dislocation by minimizing impacts on a posteriorly outstretched arm.
