Introduction: We define rogue hairs as unusually long hairs on the face outside of the typical hormone-driven hair-bearing areas. These represent a common and previously undocumented phenomenon. This mixed-method study describes the frequency and clinical features of rogue hairs using a case series, patient survey, and social media analysis. Methods: Clinical cases were identified by dermatologists, and social media platforms were searched for additional cases. Social media comments were reviewed using qualitative thematic analysis. Surveys were administered to patients at an academic dermatology clinic. Results: The case series revealed these hairs are seen in children and adults, men and women, and across races. Of the surveyed patients, 18% reported rogue hairs. Social media analysis highlighted common experiences of sudden appearance, frequent removal attempts, and minimal interaction with dermatologists. Conclusion: This mixed-method study defines rogue hairs on the face, underscoring their prevalence despite their benign nature. While the biological explanation for these hairs remains unknown, the study highlights the potential of social media as a tool for clinical inquiry and enhanced understanding of the patient experience. The study provides evidence-based information for individuals experiencing rogue hairs and prompts future research into the biologic mechanisms underlying this common phenomenon.

BACKGROUND: Conventional advice to reduce the risk of breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCLE) suggests avoidance of daily-living risks, and limited research has investigated these risks. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine the occurrence, patterns, and effects of daily-living risks on BCLE. METHODS: A cross-sectional design was used to collect data from 567 patients at a metropolitan cancer center in the United States. The Lymphedema Risk-Reduction Behavior Checklist was used to assess the occurrence of 11 daily-living risks. Descriptive, regression, and factor analyses were performed. RESULTS: Significant odds of BCLE were associated with infection (odds ratio [OR] 2.58, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.95-3.42), cuts/scratches (OR 2.65, 95% CI 1.97-3.56), sunburn (OR 1.89, 95% CI 1.39-3.56), oil splash or steam burns (OR 2.08, 95% CI 1.53-3.83), and insect bites (OR 1.59, 95% CI 1.18-2.13). The daily-living risks were clustered into factors related to skin trauma and carrying objects. Skin trauma risk was significantly associated with BCLE (B = 0.539, z = 3.926, OR 1.714, 95% CI 1.312-2.250; p < 0.001). Having three, four, or five skin trauma risks significantly increased the odds of BCLE to 4.31, 5.14, and 6.94 times, respectively. The risk of carrying objects had no significant or incremental effects on BCLE. CONCLUSION: Complete avoidance of daily-living risks is challenging given 52.73% of patients incurred more than five daily-living risks. Our study findings underscore the importance of 'what to do' strategies to minimize infection and skin trauma.

Skin-to-skin relaxation is offered by one of the department's psychomotor therapists, within a precise framework of clearly defined indications and contraindications. The aim of this intervention modality is to support the parent-baby relationship in a context of vulnerability. A self-questionnaire for parents was used to take stock of the practice of skin-to-skin relaxation at the Centre Hospitalier Intercommunal de Créteil. The use of this mediation appears beneficial and deserves to be developed in neonatology.

BACKGROUND: Anti-aging products are widely used, but the desire for safe and more efficient anti-aging products continues to increase. Dissolving microneedle patches (MNPs) have provided a more efficient transdermal drug delivery solution. MNP is a promising candidate for developing better anti-aging products. OBJECTIVE: To develop a more efficient anti-aging MNP product, we fabricated a dual anti-wrinkle microneedle patch (named DA-MNP) using droplet extension (DEN®) technology and evaluated its skin puncture ability, safety, and efficacy through clinical studies. METHODS: A DA-MNP comprising hyaluronic acid (HA) polymer backbone, acetyl octapeptide-3, and L-ascorbic acid 2-glucoside and sodium cyclic lysophosphatidic acid was fabricated using DEN® technology. Placebo MNPs comprising only HA were also fabricated. Twenty-four healthy subjects were enrolled in this comparative clinical study. The DA-MNP or placebo MNP was separately applied to the left and right eyes of subjects for overnight. Assessments, including wrinkle improvement, trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL), eye lifting and adverse effects were evaluated at each scheduled visit day for 28 days. RESULTS: The DA-MNP showed mechanical strength enough for puncturing the stratum corneum. Compared to placebo MNP group, the DA-MNP treated group showed an effective eye wrinkles improvement and better anti-aging of skin, with reduced TEWL, enhanced skin elasticity and lifting, and no adverse effects. CONCLUSION: The present study demonstrated that the fabricated DA-MNP exhibited fast acting on deep wrinkles and enhanced anti-aging efficacy, with no skin safety concern. Thus, this DA-MNP may serve as a new transdermal delivery solution for skin wrinkling and aging.

Aim: Incontinence-associated dermatitis is a common health problem among older clinical patients, causing related severe skin damage such as pressure ulcers, secondary infection, and long length of hospital stay. This pilot study aimed to develop and examine the effects of nursing programs in preventing incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD) among older patients. Ten older patients at high risk of incontinence-associated dermatitis were included in this study: five patients received a nursing program combined with mixed products, and another five received a nursing program combined with separate use of products. The program was evaluated using a perianal assessment tool (PAT-T) for risk assessment, the incontinence-associated dermatitis invention tool (IADIT-T) for severity assessment, the skin surface pH, and skin surface moisture. The results revealed that the nursing program and skin products are usable and acceptable, provide step-by-step details, and are simple and easy to follow. The nursing program combined with using zinc oxide products followed by petroleum jelly can prevent and decrease the severity of incontinence-associated dermatitis in older patients. Moreover, it can also improve the skin surface pH to a mild acidity appropriate for the skin condition and increase the skin's moisture better the nursing program with mixed skin products. This pilot study confirmed that the developed program can be applied in practice. Moreover, the program could be used to decrease the incidence of IAD and skin surface pH but increase skin moisture. However, future study with a larger sample size and applying a more substantial research design for more accuracy and generalization is needed. BACKGROUND: It is well known that women have been plagued by various skin problems. However, research on the characteristics of women's skin at different ages is still inadequate. In addition, there is a lack of research on the extent of women's skincare habits and skin care awareness. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey on skin was carried out in Shanghai, China, which was conducted by means of a questionnaire. 3678 women, aged 18-59 years, participated in the study. The information collected focused on the importance they place on their skin, the skin problems they have, and their use and perception of skin care products. RESULTS: Before the age of 25, the most common skin problems that women face are dryness and oiliness, while after the age of 30, skin-ageing issues begin to appear and worsen with age. In addition, the higher the level of education, the higher the frequency of and compliance with sunscreen use, and the economy also affects women's use of sunscreen. Importantly, the importance women place on their skin and the level of sunscreen awareness affects women's use of sunscreen. CONCLUSIONS: This study was conducted to understand the skin characteristics of women of different age groups as well as to determine the factors that influence the use of sunscreens, which will not only promote women's skin care practices and product development, but also provide important clues for future activities on sunscreen use and health promotion.

OBJECTIVES: APOLLO study, 'efficacy and safety of the deodorAnt Pad against Odour and uLceration for LOcally advanced breast cancer', aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of wearing a deodorant pad in patients with locally advanced breast cancer (LABC) with an ulceration. METHODS: Komagome Pads were previously developed by Juntendo University and Kao Corporation. In test A, a conventional pad consisting of gauze, a commercially available diaper, pad, etc and the Komagome Pad were compared over 3 days to assess their efficacy and possible improvements for short-term use. In test B, the Komagome Pad was used continuously for 1 month to evaluate its safety during long-term use. RESULTS: This study included 14 patients in test A and nine in test B. In odour evaluation using sensory testing in test A, nine patients reported more significant efficacy in odour suppression with the Komagome Pad. The odour intensity of the Komagome Pad was lower on the gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The group with a high level of exudation reported significantly higher satisfaction with the Komagome Pad. In test B, no adverse events were observed. CONCLUSIONS: A new deodorant pad for LABC demonstrated high safety and deodorant efficacy.

The skin of newborns is classified as sensitive, with a higher risk of skin barrier disruption and irritation of a diapered area. Despite dermatologist recommendations to use only water and a cloth for cleaning, most of the population still relies on the comforts of modern parenting, which includes intensive daily usage of baby wet wipes. Novel baby formulations are designed following the concept of infant skin health, containing a gentle cleanser, suitable emollient, and buffer system enabling a slightly acidic pH value and they are free of ethyl alcohol. Thus, it is important to understand the chemical background of such a complex liquid formulation, with emphasis on its safety. In line with this, the present paper discusses the scientific background of various chemical compounds found in baby wipe formulations to improve the understanding of wet wipe designs and direct them toward more skin-friendly solutions.

Skin-to-skin care (SSC) is an important part of parent and infant care during the neonatal period and into infancy. SSC should be initiated immediately after birth and practiced as a standard of care in all settings, as well as in the home. There is strong evidence that SSC has a positive effect on breastfeeding and human milk feeding in both term and preterm infants, as well as on mortality, cardiopulmonary stability, and thermoregulation. SSC reduces pain and infant stress, enhances parent-infant bonding, has neurodevelopmental benefits, and has positive effects on parental mental health. The safety and feasibility of providing SSC has been established in term and preterm infants, and SSC is recommended as best practice for all infants. The benefits of SSC outweigh the risks in most situations, and despite challenges, care providers should implement procedures and accommodations to ensure that SSC occurs as a safe and positive experience for the parent, family, infant, and health care team. This statement includes all families as defined and determined by themselves, and recognizes that health communication, language, and terminology must be individualized to meet specific family needs by the health care team.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Head and neck cancer patients frequently develop radiation dermatitis (RD) during radiotherapy. We compared liposomal gel with and without chamomile extract for the prevention and management of RD in head and neck cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty participants undergoing radiotherapy for the first time for head and neck cancer were recruited in a double-blind randomized clinical trial. Primary outcomes were the occurrence of dry desquamation and the cumulative dose of ionizing radiation at the first occurrence of dry desquamation. Secondary outcomes were the occurrence of erythema, moist desquamation, global RD, and participant self-reported symptoms. RESULTS: Dry desquamation occurred in 76.9 % (95 % CI: 57.9, 89.0) of participants in the chamomile liposomal gel group and in 88.9 % (95 % CI: 71.9, 96.1) in the liposomal gel group (p = 0.43). The median cumulative dose of ionizing radiation when dry desquamation occurred was 48.0 Gy in the chamomile liposomal gel group and 40.0 Gy in the liposomal gel group. Fewer symptoms were reported in the chamomile liposomal gel group. CONCLUSION: No statistically significant differences in outcomes were found between the two groups, though the chamomile liposomal gel group presented with lower grades of RD than the liposomal gel group. In addition, when compared to the literature on other topical interventions to manage RD, our results show that chamomile liposomal gel has potential for better management and prevention of RD in this population, which should be further tested. The skin, being the largest organ in the human body, plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the body against invasive pathogens. Therefore, it is essential to reinforce and protect this vital organ. Current research supports the impact of probiotics on skin health and their ability to alleviate various skin disorders. However, the effectiveness and probable side effects of probiotics in skin care remain a subject of debate, necessitating further investigation and analysis. Hence, this study aims to highlight existing gaps and future needs in the current research on probiotics in skin care and pave the way for future investigations. Therefore, we scrutinized the effects of oral (fermented foods and dietary supplements) and non-oral/topical probiotics on skin care, and the mechanism of probiotics that affect skin health. The results of most studies showed that fermented foods containing probiotics, particularly dairy products, positively impact skin health. The research results regarding the efficacy of probiotic supplements and live strains in treating skin disorders show promising potential. However, safety evaluations are crucial, to identify any potential adverse effects. While research has identified numerous potential mechanisms by which probiotics may influence skin health, a complete understanding of their precise mode of action remains elusive. However, it seems that probiotics can exert their positive effects through the gut-skin and gut-skin-brain axis on the human body. Therefore, following the identification of safe probiotics, additional studies should be carried out to establish optimal dosages, potential side effects, suitable regulatory guidelines, and validation methods.

BACKGROUND: Specialized aesthetic skincare treatments are an important part of helping reduce facial signs of aging. AIMS: This article highlights real-world experience with a Macrocystis pyrifera ferment-containing skincare regimen comprising a cleansing foam, a serum, and a moisturizer with anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, anti-erythema, and healing properties for facial skin condition improvement. PATIENTS/METHODS: The real-world case (RWC) series presented highlights and the expert panel's clinical experience with the M. pyrifera ferment-containing skincare regimen used for 12 weeks to improve facial skin conditions. The panelists convened a meeting to discuss and select RWCs from their practice using the M. pyrifera ferment-containing skincare regimen. RESULTS: The RWC series showed that erythema and inflamed, easily irritated skin bother patients, even when it is mild. Reducing inflammation, erythema, and visible signs of facial aging and improving skin health contributed to patient satisfaction. CONCLUSION: The M. pyrifera ferment-containing skincare regimen comprising a cleansing foam, a serum, and a moisturizer is effective in decreasing the visible effects of inflammation and signs of aging while promoting healing by enhancing barrier resilience and recovery.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to analyze if a multi-foam core mattress with a laminated cover can reduce the incidence of pressure injuries, compared to an alternating air mattress overlay among critically ill patients in acute settings. DESIGN: Prospective observational study. PARTICIPANTS: and setting: Patients with a Braden scale score ≤16 on intensive care unit admission at five general hospitals in Korea were included in this study between February 2022 and March 2022. METHODS: One hundred and twenty patients in acute settings were enrolled and categorized into two groups: a multi-form core mattress with a laminated cover group (n = 60) and an alternating air mattress overlay group (n = 60). Data were collected for 7 days by wound care nurses. RESULTS: Pressure injury developed at a significantly lower rate in the multi-form core mattress with a laminated cover group (n = 4/60, 6.7 %) than in the alternating air mattress overlay group (n = 25/60, 25.0 %) (P = 0.011). Using a multi-foam core mattress with a laminated cover demonstrated a protective effect against pressure injuries (odds ratio 0.123, 95 % confidence interval 0.024-0.620, P = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS: A multi-foam core mattress with a laminated cover was significantly more effective than an alternating air mattress overlay in preventing pressure injury in critically ill patients.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors affecting consumers' repurchase intentions of skincare cosmetics in Can Tho city. By examining consumers' knowledge, behaviors, and factors impacting their intention of repeatedly buying skincare products, manufacturers and sales businesses are able to more effectively comprehend their clients' demands. Data were collected from 531 consumers residing in the area of Can Tho city, Vietnam, who had bought skincare products for the second time or more. The survey using the cross-sectional method and a set of questionnaires was based on the theory of planned behavior (TPB) and developed on the 5-point Likert scale. The factors impacting repurchase intentions for skincare merchandise involve attitude, reliability of signal quality, and retailer credibility, with attitude being the most powerful influence, followed by retailer credibility and reliability of signal quality respectively. These factors accounted for 27.5 % of behavior variance. The clarity element of signal quality reliability does not affect behavioral intention. Cosmetic companies can develop policies, improve the quality of their products in order to suit the customer needs, retain potential clients, and enhance their competitive capability.

Background: Atrophic scarring is a severe form-disfiguring sequela of acne, which can lead to negative effect on patients' life. Fractional microplasma radiofrequency (RF) has emerged as a promising modality, leveraging dermal fibroblast remodeling to enhance aesthetic results for scars and hyperpigmentation. This study evaluates the efficacy and safety of high-power fractional microplasma RF for atrophic acne scars, considering patient tolerance to procedural discomfort. Methods: In this prospective study, 95 Chinese patients with atrophic facial acne scars underwent three sessions of fractional microplasma RF treatment, with assessments at 1, 3, and 6 months post-treatment. Patients were categorized based on treatment power: Group A (50-70 W) and Group B (70-85 W). Efficacy was determined by three independent dermatologists using digital photographs and Echelle d'Evaluation Clinique des Cicatrices d'Acné (ECCA) scores, and patient-reported outcomes gauged satisfaction levels. Results: Eighty-six patients completed the study. Significant improvements were observed, with a reduction in ECCA scores from 107.21 to 42.27 (P<0.05), demonstrating notable scar amelioration across both groups, albeit with a superior outcome in Group B. All patients experienced transient side effects such as pain, erythema, and edema, deemed tolerable with no long-term adverse effects reported. The treatment was well-received, with high satisfaction rates, underscoring its efficacy and acceptable safety profile. Conclusion: Fractional microplasma RF therapy, particularly at higher power settings, is an effective and safe option for treating atrophic acne scars, offering significant aesthetic improvement with manageable discomfort. This modality presents a valuable addition to acne scar management strategies, especially for patients with darker skin tones seeking minimal downtime and reduced risk of hyperpigmentation.

Q-switched (QS) Nd: YAG lasers are frequently utilised light sources for tattoo removal due to their precise micro-confined photo-acoustic interaction with exogenous and endogenous pigments. In order to achieve optimal results, several treatment sessions are usually required. However, the number of sessions depend on tattoo size, design complexity, pigment quantity within dermal layers, and anatomical location. Higher energy settings have often been used to reduce treatment sessions to a minimum however, this approach may lead to possible post-laser skin complications such as pathological wound healing. This case report highlights the importance of recognizing early stages of pathological wound healing encountered after high fluence 1064 nm QS laser tattoo removal. Early implementation of a proportional wound care strategy with anti-neoangiogenic and anti-inflammatory properties through the unconventional use of potent topical steroids applied in a pulsed fashion resulted in positive control of the tissue repair processes. This approach led to effective wound healing re-modulation achieving near normal skin remodelling and optimal tissue healing which in turn, permitted the completion of necessary QS tattoo removal sessions to accomplish successful and safe tattoo fading whilst maintaining overall patient satisfaction.

BACKGROUND: The increasing quest for effective and safe antiaging skincare solutions has led to a surge in the exploration of natural compounds such as phenolic acids. Despite the proven efficacy of traditional antiaging ingredients like retinol, their associated side effects have necessitated the search for alternatives. AIMS: This study aimed to assess the anti-wrinkle efficacy of a standardized phenolic acids polymer extract (PAPE) from propolis, employing both in vitro and clinical methodologies to explore its suitability as a novel antiaging skincare ingredient for sensitive and nonsensitive skin types. PATIENTS/METHODS: The study comprised of evaluating PAPE effects on key skin health biomarkers in dermal fibroblasts and keratinocytes. A double-blind, randomized clinical trial involving female participants aged 30-70 years assessed the wrinkle-reducing effectiveness of face creams formulated with two concentrations of PAPE (1.5% and 3%) over a 28-day period. RESULTS: In vitro studies indicated that PAPE could modulate inflammation and tissue remodeling biomarkers. The clinical trial demonstrated that applying PAPE-enriched cream resulted in significant wrinkle reduction, with 25% and 34% improvements for the 1.5% and 3% PAPE formulations, respectively. Subjective feedback from participants further validated the antiaging efficacy and overall satisfaction with the product. CONCLUSION: Incorporating PAPE offers a compelling antiaging solution, significantly reducing wrinkle depth with a favorable safety profile. The study substantiates PAPE's potential as an effective and safe alternative to conventional antiaging ingredients, aligning with the cosmetic industry's shift toward natural, evidence-based formulations.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between emotional distress and mother-preterm infant interactions among mothers who used skin-to-skin care and to explore their experiences of childbirth and continuous skin-to-skin care. DESIGN: A sequential, explanatory, mixed-methods design. SETTING: A neonatal nursery in a tertiary-level hospital in Malawi. PARTICIPANTS: Forty-four mother-preterm infant dyads; we interviewed 15 of these mothers. METHODS: We administered surveys to assess emotional distress (i.e., depression, anxiety, posttraumatic stress, and worry about infant health) and video-recorded mother-infant interactions. We used regression analysis to assess the relationship between indicators of emotional distress and mother-infant interactions and further examined whether skin-to-skin care was associated with maternal distress. We used in-depth interviews to collect qualitative data and used content analysis to identify common themes. RESULTS: Symptoms of emotional distress were negatively associated with the frequency of infant negative behaviors and gestures, infant smiling, and mother looking and infant smiling when we controlled for the number of days administering continuous skin-to-skin care, gestational age, and severity of the infant's condition. Mothers reported that they felt stressed by providing continuous skin-to-skin care but appreciated its positive effects on the infant. CONCLUSION: Emotional distress while providing continuous skin-to-skin care was associated with poorer mother-preterm infant interactions The mental distress that mothers undergo while delivering continuous skin-to-skin care to their infants can be draining. It is essential for nurses to offer the required psychological support to enhance maternal mental health and encourage positive infant behavior and development. Health care systems need to support this level of nursing care.

AIM: Wiping pressure (WP [mmHg]) during bed baths is essential to maintain skin integrity and care quality for older adults. However, effects of different wiping pressures on skin barrier recovery over multiple days remain unclear. This study evaluated and compared the effects of consecutive bed bathing with weak pressure and that with ordinary pressure on skin barrier recovery of hospitalised older adults. METHODS: This within-person, randomised, controlled trial involved 254 forearms (127 patients) and was conducted at a general hospital. Forearms were blinded and randomly assigned a site and sequence of two bed bathing sessions: wiping three times with weak (10≤WP<20) and ordinary pressure (20≤WP<30) once per day for 2 consecutive days. The skin barrier was assessed daily based on transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and stratum corneum hydration (SCH) before and 15 min after the interventions. Dry skin was assessed using the overall dry skin score. RESULTS: A linear mixed model showed that the time courses of TEWL and SCH differed significantly between groups. Impaired skin barrier function caused by ordinary pressure on the first day did not recover to baseline values the next day, whereas weak pressure did not cause significant changes. During subgroup analyses, TEWL of patients with dry skin was more likely to increase with ordinary pressure. CONCLUSIONS: Despite decreased skin barrier recovery experienced by older adults, our findings suggest the safety of weak pressure and highlight the importance of WP during bed baths. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common, chronic relapsing, and remitting inflammatory skin disease that is characterized by erythematous, scaly, and pruritic lesions often located over the flexural surfaces. Treatment goals of AD include the reduction of itching and burning, as well as the reduction of skin changes. Treatment of AD includes emollients and skin care, topical therapies including topical corticosteroids and steroid-sparing therapies, systemic therapies, and phototherapy.
