Recent studies emphasize the significance of skin microclimate in the prevention of pressure injuries (PI). The objective was to evaluate the effect of pressure loading on skin temperature and moisture in the heels of healthy adults. This is a before-and-after study performed at Brazil, in October 2022. Skin temperature (°C) was measured by an infrared digital thermometer, and skin moisture (%) using electrical bioimpedance. Ten individuals/twenty heels were evaluated. The average temperature of the right and left heel was the same at baseline (27.2 °C). It was recognized that after 30 min of pressure loading on the heels, there was a decrease in temperature, and after 15 min of pressure offloading, the temperature decreased again. It was found that at t0, the moisture of the right heel (12.6%) was lower than the left heel (15.6%). The median moisture in the right heel increased from t0 to t1 and decreased in t2, while in the left heel, there was a small variation of the median from t0 to t1, as well as to t2. The pressure loading leads to a decrease in temperature and changes the skin moisture of the heels of healthy individuals.

Respiratory and cardiovascular functions decline with age in elderly individuals. Consequently, the incidence of chronic respiratory and cardiovascular diseases increases with age. Heart disease and pneumonia are the leading causes of death in Japan. Given the pathophysiological nature of these diseases, patients inevitably require monitoring of their cardiac and pulmonary functions, such as heart rate and arterial blood oxygenation, as systemic parameters. In addition, monitoring skin temperature and humidity as local parameters is preferable for elderly individuals to maintain healthy daily conditions. In the present study, we developed a wearable vital sign monitoring system and validated the accuracy of the device under development as compared to authorised medical devices that measure these systemic and local parameters in the peripheral tissue of the palm. For the systemic parameters, mean values showed no significant differences between the two devices, but the data bias was greater for the device under development. For the local parameters, mean values showed significant differences between the two devices; however, the data bias was the same for both devices. The acceptable data acquisition of the device under development was approximately 89%, with error acquisition mainly caused by the measurement of systemic parameters. We conclude that further improvements in measurement of systemic parameters are required to increase the data acquisition beyond 90%.

This study investigates the dynamic interactions between physiological systems during competitive gaming, utilizing a Network Physiology approach. By examining the physiological responses of a gamer with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder playing a real-time strategy game, we explore the relationships and temporal lag effects between pupil dilation, skin temperature, and heart rate. Our findings highlight the interconnectedness of these physiological systems and demonstrate how different physiological states are associated with unique patterns of network interactions. The study employs the concept of Time Delay Stability towards a deeper understanding of the complex dynamics involved. This research contributes to the growing field of Network Physiology by offering new insights into the physiological underpinnings of competitive gaming, potentially informing targeted training and recovery protocols for eSports athletes.

Objective.The association between muscle damage and skin temperature is controversial. We hypothesize that including metrics that are more sensitive to individual responses by considering variability and regions representative of higher temperature could influence skin temperature outcomes. Here, the objective of the study was to determine whether using alternative metrics (TMAX, entropy, and pixelgraphy) leads to different results than mean, maximum, minimum, and standard deviation (SD) skin temperature when addressing muscle damage using infrared thermography.Approach.Thermal images from four previous investigations measuring skin temperature before and after muscle damage in the anterior thigh and the posterior lower leg were used. The TMAX, entropy, and pixelgraphy (percentage of pixels above 33 °C) metrics were applied.Main results.On 48 h after running a marathon or half-marathon, no differences were found in skin temperature when applying any metric. Mean, minimum, maximum, TMAX, and pixelgraphy were lower 48 h after than at basal condition following quadriceps muscle damage (p< 0.05). Maximum skin temperature and pixelgraphy were lower 48 h after than the basal condition following muscle damage to the triceps sural (p< 0.05). Overall, TMAX strongly correlated with mean (r= 0.85) and maximum temperatures (r= 0.99) and moderately with minimum (r= 0.66) and pixelgraphy parameter (r= 0.64). Entropy strongly correlates with SD (r= 0.94) and inversely moderately with minimum temperature (r= -0.53). The pixelgraphy moderately correlated with mean (r= 0.68), maximum (r= 0.62), minimum (r= 0.58), and TMAX (r= 0.64).Significance.Using alternative metrics does not change skin temperature outcomes following muscle damage of lower extremity muscle groups.

BACKGROUND: Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a multifaceted neurodevelopmental psychiatric condition that typically emerges during childhood but often persists into adulthood, significantly impacting individuals' functioning, relationships, productivity, and overall quality of life. However, the current diagnostic process exhibits limitations that can significantly affect its overall effectiveness. Notably, its face-to-face and time-consuming nature, coupled with the reliance on subjective recall of historical information and clinician subjectivity, stand out as key challenges. To address these limitations, objective measures such as neuropsychological evaluations, imaging techniques and physiological monitoring of the Autonomic Nervous System functioning, have been explored. METHODS: The main aim of this study was to investigate whether physiological data (i.e., Electrodermal Activity, Heart Rate Variability, and Skin Temperature) can serve as meaningful indicators of ADHD, evaluating its utility in distinguishing adult ADHD patients. This observational, case-control study included a total of 76 adult participants (32 ADHD patients and 44 healthy controls) who underwent a series of Stroop tests, while their physiological data was passively collected using a multi-sensor wearable device. Univariate feature analysis was employed to identify the tests that triggered significant signal responses, while the Informative k-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) algorithm was used to filter out less informative data points. Finally, a machine-learning decision pipeline incorporating various classification algorithms, including Logistic Regression, KNN, Random Forests, and Support Vector Machines (SVM), was utilized for ADHD patient detection. RESULTS: Results indicate that the SVM-based model yielded the optimal performance, achieving 81.6% accuracy, maintaining a balance between the experimental and control groups, with sensitivity and specificity of 81.4% and 81.9%, respectively. Additionally, integration of data from all physiological signals yielded the best results, suggesting that each modality captures unique aspects of ADHD. CONCLUSIONS: This study underscores the potential of physiological signals as valuable diagnostic indicators of adult ADHD. For the first time, to the best of our knowledge, our findings demonstrate that multimodal physiological data collected via wearable devices can complement traditional diagnostic approaches. Further research is warranted to explore the clinical applications and long-term implications of utilizing physiological markers in ADHD diagnosis and management.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The TWIK-related potassium (TREK) channel subfamily, including TREK1 and TREK2, is a novel cold receptor. Ostruthin, a TREK1 and TREK2 agonist, is a component found in the plant Paramignya trimera and is traditionally used as an anticancer medicine in Vietnam, with its stems and roots treating various ailments. The female hormone progesterone (P4) influences body temperature in women; however, the effect of P4 on thermoregulation via TREK has not been examined. This study aims to investigate the effects of P4 on thermoregulatory responses in ostruthin-administered ovariectomized rats, which are animal models of human menopause. METHODS: Wistar rats were ovariectomized and implanted with silastic tubes with or without P4 (P4(+) and P4(-) groups). The TREK agonist or vehicle was injected intraperitoneally. Body temperature, locomotor activity, tail skin temperature, and thermoregulatory behavior (assessed by tail-hiding behavior) were continuously measured. Plasma concentrations of catecholamines, triiodothyronine, and thyroxine were also measured. RESULTS: In both the P4(+) and P4(-) groups, the change in body temperature was greater among the rats administered the TREK agonist compared to the vehicle. No significant differences were observed between the groups in locomotor activity, tail skin temperature, or tail-hiding behavior. The dopamine concentration in the P4(+) group was lower than that in the P4(-) group. CONCLUSIONS: Ostruthin, the TREK agonist, increases body temperature in ovariectomized rats; however, P4 may not affect these responses in ovariectomized rats.

Previous studies have suggested that mindfulness programs can be useful, in a significant sector of the population, to reduce stress when practiced for at least 8 weeks. The objective of the present investigation was to explore the effect of a single session of mindfulness practice in reducing stress in female cancer survivors. Two repeated measures studies were applied; in the first one, it was performed individually, while in the second one, it was performed in a group. Psychosocial measures were administered, and skin temperature was recorded as a marker of autonomic nervous activity. The results indicate that only when the mindfulness exercise was presented did the skin temperature increase (p < 0.05), with a large effect size (d > 0.8) during compassion, suggesting sympathetic decline. Furthermore, the psychosocial functioning of the group of female cancer survivors was like that of the non-clinical population. The data are discussed in the context of Polyvagal Theory, a theoretical model of biopsychosocial functioning, and evidence is provided on the effect of mindfulness and compassion on reducing stress and inducing positive affect in female cancer survivors.

The transition from wakefulness to sleep occurs when the core body temperature decreases. The latter is facilitated by an increase in the cutaneous blood flow, which dissipates internal heat into the micro-environment surrounding the sleeper's body. The rise in cutaneous blood flow near sleep onset causes the distal (hands and feet) and proximal (abdomen) temperatures to increase by about 1 °C and 0.5 °C, respectively. Characterizing the dynamics of skin temperature changes throughout sleep phases and understanding its relationship with sleep quality requires a means to unobtrusively and longitudinally estimate the skin temperature. Leveraging the data from a temperature sensor strip (TSS) with five individual temperature sensors embedded near the surface of a smart bed's mattress, we have developed an algorithm to estimate the distal skin temperature with a minute-long temporal resolution. The data from 18 participants who recorded TSS and ground-truth temperature data from sleep during 14 nights at home and 2 nights in a lab were used to develop an algorithm that uses a two-stage regression model (gradient boosted tree followed by a random forest) to estimate the distal skin temperature. A five-fold cross-validation procedure was applied to train and validate the model such that the data from a participant could only be either in the training or validation set but not in both. The algorithm verification was performed with the in-lab data. The algorithm presented in this research can estimate the distal skin temperature at a minute-level resolution, with accuracy characterized by the mean limits of agreement [-0.79 to +0.79 °C] and mean coefficient of determination R2=0.87. This method may enable the unobtrusive, longitudinal and ecologically valid collection of distal skin temperature values during sleep. Therelatively small sample size motivates the need for further validation efforts.

Our aim in this study was to test the effect of 10 sessions of biofeedback (BFB) on physiological, psychological, and cognitive functioning of international tennis players. In this randomized controlled trial, we recruited 16 international tennis players (11 male, 5 female; Mage = 17.31, SD = 0.87 years), who were randomly assigned to either an intervention group (IG; n = 8) or a control group (CG; n = 8). Those in the IG received 10 multimodal BFB sessions over four weeks, while those in the CG received no intervention. We assessed physiological, psychological, and cognitive parameters before and after the intervention and found a positive effect for skin temperature, state anxiety, and cognitive performance in the IG versus the CG. We provide preliminary data that 10 sessions of multimodal BFB improved cognitive functions and reduced anxiety symptoms in international tennis players. Future investigators should consider increasing sample size, incorporating an active CG, and studying these effects across diverse athletic disciplines.

Little is known about the healthy aging of the circadian timing system under natural living conditions. This study explores changes in the circadian rhythm of distal skin temperature (DST) with aging and relates these changes to sleep-wake timing and environmental influences. DST, sleep-wake timing, 24-h light exposure, and physical activity were measured and averaged over seven consecutive days using temperature sensors, actigraphy with a light meter, and sleep diaries in 35 healthy older women (60-79 years) and 30 young women (20-34 years). Circadian rhythm characteristics, describing strength (amplitude) and timing (acrophase) of the DST rhythm, were calculated using cosinor analysis. The older adults displayed an 18-19% smaller amplitude and a 66-73 min earlier acrophase (peak time) for DST rhythm than the young adults, indicating a weaker and phase-advanced DST rhythm. The phase advance for DST was not due to an earlier evening increase, but to a shorter nocturnal plateau period. Daytime light exposure inversely affected strength (amplitude) but not phasing of the DST rhythm in older adults. The DST rhythm was 3.5 times more advanced than the sleep-wake rhythm, showing an altered phase relationship (phase angle) between both rhythms with aging. The phase angle was more heterogeneous among older adults, showing differential aging. The phase advance for DST rhythm and the altered and heterogeneous phase relationship between DST and sleep-wake rhythms were not related to ambient light exposure and the physical activity of older adults. This suggests that healthy aging of the circadian system might be due to endogenous mechanisms such as an internal rearrangement rather than external influences.

Sleep quality (SQ) is a crucial aspect of overall health. Poor sleep quality may cause cognitive impairment, mood disturbances, and an increased risk of chronic diseases. Therefore, assessing sleep quality helps identify individuals at risk and develop effective interventions. SQ has been demonstrated to affect heart rate variability (HRV) and skin temperature even during wakefulness. In this perspective, using wearables and contactless technologies to continuously monitor HR and skin temperature is highly suited for assessing objective SQ. However, studies modeling the relationship linking HRV and skin temperature metrics evaluated during wakefulness to predict SQ are lacking. This study aims to develop machine learning models based on HRV and skin temperature that estimate SQ as assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). HRV was measured with a wearable sensor, and facial skin temperature was measured by infrared thermal imaging. Classification models based on unimodal and multimodal HRV and skin temperature were developed. A Support Vector Machine applied to multimodal HRV and skin temperature delivered the best classification accuracy, 83.4%. This study can pave the way for the employment of wearable and contactless technologies to monitor SQ for ergonomic applications. The proposed method significantly advances the field by achieving a higher classification accuracy than existing state-of-the-art methods. Our multimodal approach leverages the synergistic effects of HRV and skin temperature metrics, thus providing a more comprehensive assessment of SQ. Quantitative performance indicators, such as the 83.4% classification accuracy, underscore the robustness and potential of our method in accurately predicting sleep quality using non-intrusive measurements taken during wakefulness.

Sex difference stands as a crucial factor necessitating consideration in personalized thermal environment control, with the mechanisms of its emergence potentially differing across different thermal environments. However, a comparative analysis of sex differences regarding body temperature (skin and core body temperature) and thermal perception across different environments is lacking. A stable environmental experiment (comprising three conditions: 16 °C, 20 °C, and 24 °C) and a transient environmental experiment (involving a whole-body step-change from 19 °C to 35 °C and back to 19 °C) were conducted, with participation from 20 young males and 20 young females. Skin temperature and core body temperature were continuously recorded during the experiments, and three types of thermal perceptions were regularly collected. The results showed that: (1) The impact of thermal environment on females' skin temperature surpassed that on males, in stable environment, with every 1 °C rise in ambient temperature, the mean skin temperature increased by 0.28 °C for males and 0.35 °C for females respectively; in transient environment, females' mean skin temperature raise and fell at a faster rate. (2) Males exhibited stronger thermal regulation abilities than females, particularly evident during sudden increase in ambient temperature (from 19 °C to 35 °C), where the reduction magnitude of males' core body temperature was notably larger. (3) Whether in stable or transient environments, significant sex differences often occurred in skin temperature and thermal sensation at distal parts, particularly at the hand. (4) Males typically fed back higher levels of thermal comfort and thermal acceptability than females, suggesting that in addition to physiological sex differences, psychological sex distinctions also play a role. In summary, personalized design for stable thermal environment can focus on sex differences in skin temperature, while transient thermal environment requires consideration of both skin temperature and core body temperature. A comprehensive consideration of physiological and psychological sex differences aids in creating personalized thermal environments with greater precision.

Sepsis continues to be challenging to diagnose due to its non-specific clinical signs and symptoms, emphasizing the importance of early detection. Our study aimed to enhance the accuracy of sepsis diagnosis by integrating multimodal monitoring technologies with conventional diagnostic methods. The research included a total of 121 newborns, with 39 cases of late-onset sepsis, 35 cases of early-onset sepsis, and 47 control subjects. Continuous monitoring of biosignals, including pulse oximetry (PO), near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), and skin temperature (ST), was conducted. An algorithm was then developed in Python to identify early signs of sepsis. The model demonstrated the capability to detect sepsis 6 to 48 h in advance with an accuracy rate of 87.67 ± 7.42%. Sensitivity and specificity were recorded at 76% and 90%, respectively, with NIRS and ST having the most significant impact on predictive accuracy. Despite the promising results, limitations such as sample size, data variability, and potential biases were noted. These findings highlight the critical role of non-invasive biosensing methods in conjunction with conventional biomarkers and cultures, offering a strong foundation for early sepsis detection and improved neonatal care. Further research should be conducted to validate these results across different clinical settings.

BACKGROUND: Skin hydration (SKH) measurements are used for multiple purposes: to study skin physiology, to clinically investigate dermatological issues, and to assess localized skin water in pathologies like diabetes and lymphedema. Often the volar forearm is measured at various times of day (TOD). This report aims to characterize intra-day variations in volar forearm SKH to provide guidance on expected TOD dependence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty medical students (20 male) self-measured tissue dielectric constant (TDC) on their non-dominant forearm in triplicate as an index of local skin tissue water every 2 h starting at 0800 and ending at 2400 h. All were trained and pre-certified in the procedure and had whole-body fat (FAT%) and water (H2O%) measured. Day average TDC (TDCAVG) was determined as the average of all time points expressed as mean ± SD. RESULTS: Males versus females had similar ages (25.1 ± 2.2 years vs. 25.1 ± 1.5 years), higher H2O% (56.6 ± 5.0 vs. 51.8 ± 5.7, p = 0.002), and higher TDCAVG (32.7 ± 4.1 vs. 28.5 ± 5.1, p = 0.008). TDC values were not significantly impacted by H2O% or FAT%. Female TDC exhibited a significant decreasing trend from morning to night (p = 0.004); male TDC showed no trend. CONCLUSION: Skin water assessed by TDC shows some intra-day variations for females and males but with quite different temporal patterns. Clinical relevance relates to the confidence level associated with skin hydration estimates when measured at different times of day during normal clinic hours which, based on the present data, is expected to be around 5% for both males and females.

Background: The value of music lies in its ability to evoke emotions. People can gain emotional experiences in music and can also regulate their own emotions through music. Music has its own structural rules, and exploring the relationship between musical structure and emotions is an important approach to understanding the mechanism of music-induced emotions. Musical mode refers to the arrangement of intervals around the tonic, presenting different musical modes based on the central tone and the arrangement of intervals, including Chinese pentatonic modes and Western major and minor modes. Musical morphology indicates significant differences in the construction intensity of traditional Chinese pentatonic modes and major and minor modes, affecting their mode forms and thus determining their adaptability to external influences. Aims: Exploring the modalities of music and the effects of individual music training experiences on emotion induction; validating whether musical modes exhibit cross-cultural universality in the process of emotion induction. Method: This study recruited 65 university students as participants (34 with music training experience, 31 without music training experience). Through a passive listening paradigm using the GEMS and combined with a biofeedback equipment, it explored the differences in behavioral and physiological indicators (skin conductance, temperature, heart rate) of emotional experiences (basic and aesthetic emotions) influenced by the modal forms of Chinese traditional pentatonic modes and Western major and minor modes. Results: Firstly, the arousal level of music emotion is a primary factor influencing individuals' aesthetic emotional experiences in music, which is related to the intensity of modal construction in music; Secondly, the emotional pleasure and skin temperature change induced by pentatonic music are greater than those induced by major and minor modes; Thirdly, the arousal level, electrodermal change, and heart rate variability of major and minor modes are greater than those of pentatonic music; Finally, music training experience enhances college students' familiarity and preference for pentatonic music, thereby strengthening the electrodermal physiological indicators of emotional experiences. Conclusion: The different modal forms of music express different levels of emotional arousal, leading to differences in individuals' emotional dimensions and physiological indicators in music. Additionally, individuals' music training experiences and cultural backgrounds also influence their experience of music emotions.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Various devices for non-invasive body shape correction are being developed along with the growth of the beauty industry. Radiofrequency (RF) can selectively reduce subcutaneous fat without causing skin damage. The efficacy of the procedure can be improved by applying RF to a large area simultaneously with multiple handpieces. This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of a new RF device with multi-channel handpieces. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In ex vivo experiments, the RF device was used to treat porcine tissue comprising the skin, subcutaneous, and muscle layers. The device's safety was evaluated by temperature measurements of porcine tissue and histological analysis. In in vivo experiments, the dorsal skin of pigs was treated with the RF device. The safety and efficacy of the device were evaluated by measuring the skin temperature, subcutaneous fat layer thickness, and conducting histological analysis. RESULTS: The skin temperature did not exceed the set temperature during treatment, and skin damage was not observed in histologic analysis in both ex vivo and in vivo experiments. In in vivo experiments, the subcutaneous fat layer thickness and subcutaneous lipocyte size were decreased after treatment. In addition, the fibrous tissue between subcutaneous lipocytes was increased in the RF treatment group compared with the non-treatment group. CONCLUSION: The RF device used in this study effectively reduced the size of subcutaneous lipocytes and increased fibrous tissue without skin damage. Therefore, the safe and effective use of this device for non-invasive fat reduction may be possible in clinical settings.

BACKGROUND: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the most effective method of pain relief and increased functional status for end-stage knee arthritis. We aimed to assess in patients undergoing unilateral, primary TKA whether the temperature of the operated limb, compared to the nonoperative limb, remains elevated up to 1 year postoperatively. METHODS: Using a prospective, longitudinal, observational study design, 1,094 patients were enrolled, and 889 patients completed a minimum of 4 out of 5 follow-up appointments. There were 864 patients who had a normal postoperative course, while 25 patients were deemed to have a superficial or deep infection. Skin temperatures were measured using an infrared thermometer on the operated and nonoperated knees preoperatively, at 2, 6, 12 weeks, and 1 year postoperatively. A subgroup analysis was performed on the 25 patients deemed to have a superficial or deep infection. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant increase in skin temperature in the operated versus nonoperated knee at every follow-up, with a P < .001. However, the effect size was small at the 1-year follow-up, with a mean difference in skin temperature of 0.3 °C. In the infected subgroup, there was a statistically significant difference in skin temperature at 2, 6, and 12 weeks, with a greater difference in skin temperature between the operated and nonoperated knees (4.05 versus 3.78 °C in the noninfected). However, there was little clinical difference (0.27 °C) at 2 weeks between infected and noninfected patients. CONCLUSIONS: This study could improve postoperative interactions between patients and surgeons. It is normal for skin temperature post-TKA to increase initially and improve over time, but it can take up to 1 year before there is little clinical difference. Because of the small difference in the rise of skin temperature between infected and noninfected patients, there is little indication that skin temperature is a reliable indicator of infection.

This study investigated the impact of a multiday heatwave on nocturnal physiology, behavior, and sleep under controlled conditions with comprehensive monitoring of environmental factors and participant activities. Seven young healthy males were confined for 10 days in controlled conditions that ranged between hot-to-warm (day: 35.4 °C, night: 26.3 °C) during nights 4-6 and temperate (day: 25.4 °C, night: 22.3 °C) before (nights 1-3) and after (nights 7-10) the heatwave. Measurements included core and skin temperatures, heart rate, sympathovagal balance, vasomotion indicators, urine samples, blanket coverage, subjective sleep assessments, and partial polysomnography. The average nocturnal core temperature was 0.2 °C higher during and after the heatwave compared to the pre-heatwave period, with this difference being more pronounced (+0.3 °C) in the first 2 h of sleep (p < 0.001). For every 0.1 °C rise in overnight core temperature, the total sleep time decreased by 14 min (pseudo-R2 = 0.26, p = 0.01). The elevated core temperatures occurred despite the participants exhibiting evident thermoregulatory behavior, as they covered 30% less body surface during the heatwave compared to pre- and post-heatwave periods (p < 0.001). During the heatwave, mean skin temperature at bedtime was 1.3 °C higher than pre-heatwave and 0.8 °C higher than post-heatwave periods (p < 0.001). No differences in other responses, including heart rate and vasomotion indicators, were observed. The paper details a 20-min sleepwalking episode that was coupled with marked changes in sleepwalker's thermophysiological responses. In conclusion, the simulated heatwave resulted in higher overnight core temperature which was associated with reduced total sleep time. Behavioral thermoregulation during sleep may serve as a defense against these effects, though more research is needed.

The aim of this study was to assess, through a systematic review, the status of infrared thermography (IRT) as a diagnostic tool for skin neoplasms of the head and neck region and in order to validate its effectiveness in differentiating benign and malignant lesions. A search was carried out in the LILACS, PubMed/MEDLINE, SCOPUS, Web of Science and EMBASE databases including studies published between 2004 and 2024, written in the Latin-Roman alphabet. Accuracy studies with patients aged 18 years or over presenting benign and malignant lesions in the head and neck region that evaluated the performance of IRT in differentiating these lesions were included. Lesions of mesenchymal origin and studies that did not mention histopathological diagnosis were excluded. The systematic review protocol was registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42023416079). Reviewers independently analyzed titles, abstracts, and full-texts. After extracting data, the risk of bias of the selected studies was assessed using the QUADAS - 2 tool. Results were narratively synthesized and the certainty of evidence was measured using the GRADE approach. The search resulted in 1,587 records and three studies were included. Only one of the assessed studies used static IRT, while the other two studies used cold thermal stress. All studies had an uncertain risk of bias. In general, studies have shown wide variation in the accuracy of IRT for differentiating between malignant and benign lesions, with a low level of certainty in the evidence for both specificity and sensitivity.

This study aimed to evaluate changes in body temperature in athletic horses during two different road transport distances. Six Italian Saddle horses were subjected to a 100 and 300 km transport during different times of day (am and pm). Rectal and cutaneous temperatures were recorded before (T0), immediately (following 5 min- T1) and 1 hour (T2) after transport by means of a rectal digital thermometer and a thermal infrared camera (FLIR T440) respectively, for the evaluation of left and right side of four body regions: jugular, shoulder, croup and inner thigh. There were no differences between left and right sides, inner thigh or rectal temperatures when comparing the transport distance, time points or time of day. At T0, jugular (P < 0.0001), shoulder (P < 0.01) and croup (P < 0.01) average temperatures were higher in the pm compared to those in the am in both journeys. At T1, jugular (P < 0.01) and croup (P < 0.01) temperatures were lower in the pm compared to am following the 300 km journey. Jugular temperature (P < 0.0001) was higher following the 300 km compared to the 100 km journey at each time point (T1 and T2) at both times of day (am and pm). Shoulder (P < 0.0001) and croup temperatures (P < 0.0001) were higher at T2 after the 300 km journey than at T2 after the 100 km journey). The current results suggested a difference between the two distances and the time of day appeared to have as great effect on ocular temperature as road transport distance.
