Aquatic farming is considered as a major source of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) for the natural environment of the lakes. ARB and ARGs in the natural environment have increased quickly because of the human activities. Here, we have profiled the diversity and abundance of ARGs in sediments from the typical aquaculture areas around 15 major lakes in China using PCR and qPCR, and further assessed the risk factor shaping the occurrence and distribution of ARGs. And class 1, 2 and 3 integrons were initially detected by PCR with specific primers. ARGs were widely distributed in the lakes: Weishan Lake and Poyang Lake showed high diversity of ARGs, followed by Dongting Lake, Chao Lake and Tai Lake. Generally, the ARGs in the Middle-Lower Yangtze Plain were more abundant than those in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Tetracycline resistance genes (tet(C), tet(A) & tet(M)) were prominent in sediments, and the next was AmpC ß-lactamase gene group BIL/LAT/CMY, and the last was the genes resistance to aminoglycoside (strA-strB). Partial least squares path modeling analysis (PLS-PMA) revealed that livestock had a significant direct effect on the distribution of ARGs in lakes, and population might indirectly influence the profiles of ARGs by affecting the scale of livestock and aquaculture. The detectable rate of class 1, 2 and 3 integrons were 80%, 100% and 46.67%, respectively. The prevalence of integrons might play a key role in promoting more frequent horizontal gene transfer (HGT) events, resulting in the environmental mobilization and dissemination of ARGs between bacteria.

The occurrences of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in both freshwater and sea have been widely reported. However, pollution control requires further information on riverine discharges with influence of land-based activities and associated risks to estuarine ecosystems. This study investigated the spatial occurrences and the relationship to sociodemographic parameters of 30 PPCPs in 67 rivers along the Bohai coastal region. The results showed that PPCPs were mainly deposited in aquatic phase, and the partitioning coefficient between water and sediment was highly determined by chemical properties. The levels of 30 PPCPs in rivers ranged from 8.33 to 894.48 ng/L, showing a large variance among regions. Caffeine, sulfamethoxazole, sulfamethazine, ofloxacin, anhydro-erythromycin, and trimethoprim were found to be the major pollutants. Multivariable analysis method was used to assess the correlation of PPCPs markers to socio-economic parameters. The results indicated that domestic emissions contributed most to the occurrences of PPCPs in the riverine water. Risk assessment result indicated that sulfamethoxazole, caffeine, tetracycline, and carbamazepine ranked top four with the highest risks to the most sensitive aquatic organisms. The results identified caffeine and carbamazepine with high detection frequency and concentration as the priority chemicals, while sulfamethoxazole and erythromycin should also be concerned due to their potential threats in specific rivers. This study provides valuable information for pollution control over PPCPs riverine discharges in estuarine regions.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a kind of organic pollutants with carcinogenic, teratogenic, and mutagenic effects. This study aims to assess the effects of changes in China's socio-economic indicators represented by energy consumption and number of motor vehicles, on PAHs and black carbon (BC) deposition. For this, a 50-cm peat core from Dajiuhu peatland, Central China, was collected and divided into 50 subsamples to establish a sedimentary record of about 200 years with radioactive 210Pb. The Σ16PAH concentration ranged from 212.67 to 830.10 ng·g-1, mainly composed of 2- and 3-ring PAHs, and BC ranged from 7.89 to 36.48%. The deposition characteristics of BC first increased and then decreased from the core bottom to the top. The predominant of the carcinogenic PAHs (C-PAHs) was Dibenzo[a,h]anthracene (DBA) before 1949, and then changed to Benzo[b]fluoranthene (BbF). Ratio of Fla/Pyr, (3+4)-ring/(5+6)-ring PAHs, and BaA/(BaA+Chr), IcdP/(IcdP+BghiP) suggested that long-range atmospheric transmission (LRAT) and pyrogenic were the main PAHs sources, but that local PAH emission contribution gradually increased since 1990, and mixed (petroleum and combustion) sources were the dominant since 2000. The high concentration of Phenanthrene (Phe) and Naphthalene (Nap) were likely from plant product. Furthermore, increased concentrations of 4-, 5-, and 6-ring PAHs showed significant correlations with increased coal and petroleum consumption and the number of motor vehicles, respectively, and this influence has strengthened after 2000. These were caused by rapid urbanization and industrialization following the implementation of the reform and opening up policy in 1978, and a new round of urbanization after 2000.

The LJ1-01 satellite is the first dedicated nighttime light remote sensing satellite in the world and offers a higher spatial resolution than the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program's Operational Linescan System (DMSP/OLS) and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) sensor on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellites of the United States. This study compared the LJ1-01 nighttime light data with NPP/VIIRS data in the context of modeling socio-economic parameters. In the eastern and central regions of China, 10 parameters from the four aspects of gross regional product (annual average population, electricity consumption, and area of land in use) were selected to build linear regression models. The results showed that the LJ1-01 nighttime light data offered better potential for modeling socio-economic parameters than the equivalent NPP/VIIRS data; the former can be an effective tool for establishing models for socio-economic parameters. There were significant positive correlations between the two types of nighttime light data and the 10 socio-economic parameters; that for the gross regional product was the highest.

Food products such as bread, biscuits, tea, coffee, oils, chocolates, grapes, pepper and fishes belonging to different categories represent a significant part of everyday diet in India and other countries having variable cooking techniques. In this study, we evaluated cancer risks of long term exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) through consumption of these products for eight societal groups in India. Total concentrations of PAHs in these products from India ranged from 0.18 to 61967 µg kg-1 and the cancer risk values for the eight sections of Indian population ranged between 7.63E-10 to 5.05E+00, indicating product specific distribution of risk from non-significant to significant levels. Cereals, vegetables and decoctions contributed majorly to cancer risk and the most susceptible group identified was children. The spread of risk estimates followed Burr and Exponential distributions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to develop information on the health risk faced by Indian population through dietary PAHs.
