RESUMO

We present the first study to measure the beliefs held by Italian laypeople about how human memory works, using a newly developed tool: the Italian Memory Belief Questionnaire (IMBQ). Research conducted in other countries has demonstrated that beliefs about memory vary widely between different professional and non-professional groups, indicating that limitations exist regarding the dissemination of empirically researched scientific knowledge. To ascertain what Italian people understand about memory-related topics, including eyewitness testimony, repression of traumatic memories and factors influencing memory recall, 301 native Italian participants completed the IMBQ in Study 1. In Study 2, 346 additional participants completed the IMBQ, alongside various additional measures, to examine the construct validity of our new instrument and investigate socio-demographic predictors of memory beliefs. Exploratory factor analysis in Study 1 identified three distinct belief factors that were present in the dataset: eyewitness and memory reliability, trauma and remembering and aspects that improve remembering. Study 2 partially confirmed this factor structure and found IMBQ scores to correlate with existing memory belief questionnaires. Correlations were also found between the IMBQ subscales and measures of fantasy proneness, but not dissociation. In both studies, many Italian laypeople strongly endorsed the notion that controversial topics (i.e., repression) are possible. Contrastingly, Italian laypeople do appear to understand the conceivable inaccuracies of memory in eyewitness settings. Sex, age and education were shown to predict beliefs about memory. Findings are discussed in relation to the importance of addressing misinformation about memory, especially in clinical and forensic settings.

RESUMO

Combativeness is a social illness. We are surrounded by culture wars over abortion, vaccine mandates, transgender care, how we die, and even how we define death. The problem is not that we disagree, but how we disagree: too often, with anger, aggression, and a sense of urgency to win against the other. Bioethicists have the knowledge and skills needed to model constructive disagreement and respectful calls for change. Bioethicists may have increased awareness that everyone suffers from unconscious self-serving biases-we are all imperfect. They are trained to recognize competing values and to engage in processes of balancing values in social contexts. Clinical ethicists are additionally trained in mediation, which involves acknowledging goodwill, listening deeply, apologizing when needed, and seeking common ground. In short, bioethicists have many of the tools needed to be healers of a culture afflicted with combativeness.

RESUMO

Biallelic WARS2 pathogenic variants responsible for partial defect in aminoacylation, have recently been reported in subjects presenting with late-onset phenotypes combining dopa-responsive early-onset dystonia parkinsonism with altered DaTSCAN and progressive myoclonus ataxia. Here, we present the case of a 39-year-old male with childhood-onset progressive dopa-responsive dystonia parkinsonism, prominent psychiatric features and ataxia whose genome sequencing identified a p.(Arg36Ter) nonsense variant and a hypomorphic p.(Trp13Gly) missense variant, allowing the diagnosis of WARS2-related disease. The p.(Trp13Gly) missense variant has previously been reported in individuals with less severe phenotypes than those carrying biallelic WARS2 loss-of-function variants. Among these individuals, two subjects had similar genetic backgrounds and almost identical clinical history to our patient. Our report brings additional proof that the p.(Trp13Gly) variant acts as a hypomorphic allele, offering insight on a genotype-phenotype correlation in WARS2-related disorders.

RESUMO

On October 7, 2023, Hamas terrorists attacked people in their homes, fields, and at a music festival in Israeli communities near the border with Gaza. More than 1,145 men, women, and children were killed, about 1,800 wounded were evacuated to hospitals in the country, and 253 infants, children, women, elderly, and men were abducted. This mass casualty incident (MCI) was the start of a war that is still ongoing. The Israeli medical system, which faced an overwhelming first 24 h, continues to take care of casualties, including those who are injured by missiles that target Israeli residential areas.Israel has a well-established trauma system, and as a result of the experience gained in this war, the system merited review. This was the topic of a meeting of leaders of the Israeli healthcare system, and it forms the basis of this report. The meeting and report provide a platform for presenting the trauma system management during the war, highlighting the strengths of the system as well as its challenges and lessons learned. The participants also brainstormed and discussed possibilities for future improvements.

RESUMO

The pseudorabies virus (PRV) is identified as a double-helical DNA virus responsible for causing Aujeszky's disease, which results in considerable economic impacts globally. The enzyme tryptophanyl-tRNA synthetase 2 (WARS2), a mitochondrial protein involved in protein synthesis, is recognized for its broad expression and vital role in the translation process. The findings of our study showed an increase in both mRNA and protein levels of WARS2 following PRV infection in both cell cultures and animal models. Suppressing WARS2 expression via RNA interference in PK-15 â€‹cells led to a reduction in PRV infection rates, whereas enhancing WARS2 expression resulted in increased infection rates. Furthermore, the activation of WARS2 in response to PRV was found to be reliant on the cGAS/STING/TBK1/IRF3 signaling pathway and the interferon-alpha receptor-1, highlighting its regulation via the type I interferon signaling pathway. Further analysis revealed that reducing WARS2 levels hindered PRV's ability to promote protein and lipid synthesis. Our research provides novel evidence that WARS2 facilitates PRV infection through its management of protein and lipid levels, presenting new avenues for developing preventative and therapeutic measures against PRV infections.

RESUMO

Introduction: Providing hemodialysis to patients with kidney failure (KF) in conflict-affected areas poses a significant challenge. Achieving and sustaining reasonable quality hemodialysis operations in such regions necessitates a comprehensive approach. Methods: In the conflict area of Northwest (NW) Syria, a 3-phase project was initiated to address the quality of hemodialysis operations. The assessment phase involved the examination of infection prevention and control (IPC) protocols, staff training, medical protocols, individualized hemodialysis prescriptions, and laboratory testing capabilities. The second phase involved activities toward capacity building and implementing an action plan based on feasibility and sustainability. Results: The assessment phase revealed that only 7 of 14 centers had IPC protocols, and 8 centers provided IPC training for their staff. Furthermore, only 7 centers had medical protocols, and 5 used individualized hemodialysis prescriptions. Difficulties in testing for potassium was reported in 7 centers and the inability to perform hepatitis B and C serologies was reported in 3 centers. Only 2 centers adhered to machine and water treatment system maintenance guidelines, and 4 conducted daily water quality checks. Recommendations were formulated, and an action plan was developed for implementation in the second phase. The plan encompassed enhancements in IPC practices, medical protocols, record-keeping, laboratory testing, and equipment maintenance. Conclusion: This project underscores that hemodialysis services in conflict-affected areas do not meet the standards for quality care. It emphasizes the necessity of implementing a comprehensive framework that engages relevant stakeholders in defining and upholding quality care, a model that should be extended to other protracted conflict-affected regions.

RESUMO

An abundance of previous research has investigated how gender has been portrayed within feature length films produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, particularly those within the Disney princess franchise. However, the Disney corporation acquired the Marvel and Star Wars franchises in 2009 and 2012, respectively, which was likely a strategy for the corporation to obtain characters that would capture the imagination of boys and men. The current qualitative study explored how gender is portrayed by leading protagonists in these texts, utilising thematic analysis, which was necessary considering little is currently known in this domain. The researchers analysed series one of Avengers Assemble and series one of Star Wars Rebels. Interpretation of the data led to the development of several themes and subthemes based on the gendered portrayals within each series. Overall, the findings suggest that there was more overt gender stereotyping in Avengers Assemble when compared with Star Wars Rebels, meaning that the former could be particularly problematic for children who may replicate its messages. The current study has facilitated a greater understanding of the gendered messages that may be consumed by children who engage with Marvel and Star Wars media. Future research is needed to assess the relationship between such messages and children's behaviour.

RESUMO

This essay situates Kathy Acker's work in the feminist sex wars debate of the 1980s. I suggest that the critique of Acker's work as a "nihilist version of the personal is political" is not ungrounded but might more usefully be understood as a "sex negativity" that emerges from specific feminist avant-garde literary devices. I discuss Acker's early texts, "Politics" (1972) and "Stripper Disintegration" (1973) to show how sexuality defines Acker's esthetic and political project. I consider the (negative) feminist reception of Acker's work, lay out how Acker was involved in the pornography debate, and I bring Acker's work into conversation with Andrea Dworkin's thought. The essay argues that Acker's pseudo-autobiographical strategies and montage techniques pose a problem for the feminist politicizing of self-knowledge and the genre of autobiography as a privileged site of identity formation and emancipation. In the reordering of materials, by way of replacing, exchanging, and negating, transformation is made possible by the act of rewriting's capacity to reveal substitutability. Acker's "nihilist" feminist politics challenge the self-determination and authenticity often assumed in the politicizing of lived experience. I also suggest that "the lesbian" functions as a phantasmatic figure in Acker's early work to circumvent the subject-object logic of the pornographic imagination. In short, Acker's early work illuminates the complex relation between sexuality, self-objectification, and the act of writing itself. With Acker's pseudo-autobiographical texts we can conceive of a sex negativity that is not anti-sex but challenges what Michel Foucault calls the "monarchy of sex" through non-positive affirmation.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND/AIM: The tryptophanyl-tRNA synthetase 1 gene (WARS1), encodes a tryptophan-tRNA synthetase involved in the amino acidification of tryptophan-tRNA and has been reported to be involved in cancer cell growth, metastasis promotion, and drug resistance in a variety of cancers. This study investigated the clinical significance of WARS1 expression as a biomarker in gastric cancer tissues obtained from patients with locally advanced gastric cancer (GC) who underwent radical resection. PATIENTS AND METHODS: WARS1 expression in GC tissues and adjacent normal gastric mucosa of 253 patients with pStage II/III GC who underwent curative resection was determined using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Association of WARS1 expression levels, categorized into high and low expression based on the median expression levels, with clinicopathological factors and overall survival (OS) of these patients was assessed. RESULTS: The low-WARS1 expression group had significantly higher serosal invasion, lymph node metastasis, lymphatic invasion, venous invasion, and pathological stage than did the high-WARS1 expression group. OS was significantly worse in the low- than in the high-WARS1 expression group (5-year survival 52.2% vs. 75.9%; p=0.0001). Furthermore, in multivariate analysis, low WARS1 expression was an independent predictor for poor OS (hazard ratio=2.101; 95% confidence interval=1.328-3.322; p=0.002). CONCLUSION: In patients with locally advanced GC, after curative resection, WARS1 expression in GC tissue may be a useful prognostic marker.

RESUMO

Despite intensive clinical and scientific efforts, the mortality rate of sepsis remains high due to the lack of precise biomarkers for patient stratification and therapeutic guidance. Secreted human tryptophanyl-tRNA synthetase 1 (WARS1), an endogenous ligand for Toll-like receptor (TLR) 2 and TLR4 against infection, activates the genes that signify the hyperinflammatory sepsis phenotype. High plasma WARS1 levels stratified the early death of critically ill patients with sepsis, along with elevated levels of cytokines, chemokines, and lactate, as well as increased numbers of absolute neutrophils and monocytes, and higher Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scores. These symptoms were recapitulated in severely ill septic mice with hypercytokinemia. Further, injection of WARS1 into mildly septic mice worsened morbidity and mortality. We created an anti-human WARS1-neutralizing antibody that suppresses proinflammatory cytokine expression in marmosets with endotoxemia. Administration of this antibody into severe septic mice attenuated cytokine storm, organ failure, and early mortality. With antibiotics, the antibody almost completely prevented fatalities. These data imply that blood-circulating WARS1-guided anti-WARS1 therapy may provide a novel theranostic strategy for life-threatening systemic hyperinflammatory sepsis.

RESUMO

Increased circulating amino acid levels have been linked to insulin resistance and development of type 2 diabetes (T2D), but the underlying mechanism remains largely unknown. Herein, we show that tryptophan modifies insulin receptor (IR) to attenuate insulin signaling and impair glucose uptake. Mice fed with tryptophan-rich chow developed insulin resistance. Excessive tryptophan promoted tryptophanyl-tRNA synthetase (WARS) to tryptophanylate lysine 1209 of IR (W-K1209), which induced insulin resistance by inhibiting the insulin-stimulated phosphorylation of IR, AKT, and AS160. SIRT1, but not other sirtuins, detryptophanylated IRW-K1209 to increase the insulin sensitivity. Collectively, we unveiled the mechanisms of how tryptophan impaired insulin signaling, and our data suggested that WARS might be a target to attenuate insulin resistance in T2D patients.

RESUMO

This article argues that state laws banning abortions for disability violate reproductive justice for parents with disabilities. These bans deprive people with disabilities of choices that may be important to their possibilities of becoming parents, including possibilities for abortion of pregnancies that have become risky to continue. Far from protecting disability civil rights, these state law bans restrict the abilities of people with disabilities to choose to have children and to parent.

RESUMO

The relevance of the work is due to the significant increase in depression with cognitive disorders (CD) worldwide, and in Ukraine in particular, in victims of emergencies situations (ES), and the importance, but insufficient development of clinical and psychopathological aspects of medical and psychological-psychiatric care for this contingent of people. Despite the modern achievements of psychiatry in the study of depression in ES, an important problem is CD, which worsen the quality of life of patients, increase the risk of relapse, progressive course, and suicidal behavior. In order to improve the level of psychological and psychiatric care for depressed patients with CD in post-stress disorders by radiation accidents, the COVID-19 pandemic, and wars, the study of domestic and foreign literature on these disorders, which have both common features and certain differences, was conducted.Conclusions. The study confirms the significant prevalence of depression with CD in victims of radiation accidents, the COVID-19 pandemic, and wars, the insufficient development of clinical and psychopathological aspects and theneed for further study of this problem, as well as the creation of state measures of psychological and psychiatric care for these patients.

RESUMO

In response to the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic, various developers turned to smartphone-based contact tracing to address the challenges of manual tracing. Due to the presence of network effects, i.e., the effectiveness of contact tracing applications increases with the number of users, information technology standards were critical to the technology's success. The standardization efforts in Europe led to a variety of trade-offs concerning the choice of an appropriate technological architecture due to the contradictory tensions resulting from the dualism between the need for contact tracing data to contain the pandemic and the need for data minimization to preserve user privacy. Drawing predominantly on the software platform and standards literature, we conduct an interpretive case study to examine the emergence and consequences of this multi-layered decision situation. Our findings reveal how Google and Apple were able to limit the individual leeway of external developers, thereby effectively resolving the European standards war. Furthermore, we identify and discuss the various short-term and long-term trade-offs associated with the standardization of contact tracing applications and translate our findings into recommendations for policy makers with respect to future crisis situations. Specifically, we propose a strategy grounded in our data that enables responsible actors to make goal-oriented and rapid decisions under time constraints.

RESUMO

Professor Precechtel's memories of the Balkan Wars of 1912-1913 have various facets and encompass different impressions and phases of these events. They trace the preparations in Prague and the journey to Montenegro, the ancient city of Cetinje among the poor and primitive people, experiences in the Albanian environment plagued by diseases, and the war experienced in Bulgaria. Czech doctors enthusiastically aided their Slavic brethren in the Balkans, who fought for liberation and rights. Initially, they were received coolly and with reservation as the local population had no experience with Czech doctors. However, over time, the medical expeditions proved their worth. Albania presented many obstacles, including a shortage of medicines and suitable food. The army suffered from droughts and exhaustion, leading to high mortality rates and infections. Medical activities were carried out under difficult conditions, lacking hygiene and basic supplies. Despite all the difficulties, the doctors strove to provide help, and their work was invaluable. Memories of the Balkan War are filled with stories of scarcity, challenges, human suffering, and determination to aid and solidarity.

RESUMO

This study analyzes the performance of the Shanghai Composite Index, S&P 500 index, WTI oil price, and LBMA gold price when wars took place, especially the Russia-Ukraine conflict. We employ empirical methods to explore the stability, instantaneous shock, and short-term shock regarding the abovementioned financial assets. We first adopt the event study method to ascertain whether the cumulative abnormal returns of the selected assets are significant when wars break out. Then, we use the permutation test to examine the significance of price level changes. Results show that only the Shanghai Composite Index is relatively stable. Second, the difference-in-differences model indicates that the 3 unstable assets all suffered positive shocks in their price levels within several days after the Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out. The parallel trend test confirms the validity of establishing the difference-in-differences model. Third, regression discontinuity is designed to measure the impact in a longer event window, suggesting the robustness of conclusions of the difference-in-differences model and revealing an upward trend before the conflict and a downward trend after the conflict of the financial assets. The study suggests that investors consider adjustments to investment strategies and governments take precautions to diminish the risk of the outbreak of wars.

RESUMO

Mental health as a crucial global public good requires action of all scientific, political, social and cultural disciplines and sectors in our VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) world. Empathy based on love as life philosophy and a way of being in the world is the most essential and basic core element in human communications which leads to healthy, creative, flourishing, and well-functioning families, communities, nations, societies, and civilizations. Culture of empathy is an essential part of the new 2.0 Enlightenment which is a mental, social, spiritual and political movement that inspires aspiration towards global human spirit, collective mind and humanistic self, public and global mental health, cosmopolitism and empathic civilization.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of the scoping review was to identify and synthesize the available literature concerning the relationship between the status of refugees, migrants, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) and Early Childhood Caries (ECC) as it relates to the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16). METHODS: Data regarding the links between the status of refugees, migrants, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) and Early Childhood Caries (ECC), and the associations between ECC and maternal and child exposure to physical and sexual abuse, insecurity, crime, exploitation, torture, and displacement were extracted. The search was carried out in January 2023 across three databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus). Only publications in English with accessible full texts were included. Descriptive statistics were utilized to summarize the categories of the retrieved papers, and graphical representation was employed for visualization purposes. The relationships between the publications and each of the 10 targets of Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16) were also assessed. RESULTS: Forty-five studies were reviewed. Most studies (42.2%) originated from the Americas Regions, while no studies were identified from the Africa Region. A significant portion (46.7%) of the papers focused on abuse, violence, and neglect as risk factors for ECC. Migrants, refugees, and IDPs were the most investigated populations (44.4%). Only one study specifically focused on IDPs and migrants respectively. The prevalence of untreated caries was higher among migrants, refugees, and IDPs compared to the host community, ECC was more prevalent among children who experienced abuse, neglect, or were in protective care. The was no clear direction on the associations between ECC and intimate partner violence, adverse childhood experiences, and wars. In terms of the SDGs, the reviewed publications addressed four targets (SDG16.1, SDG16.2, SDG16.3, and SDG16.5) out of the ten targets outlined in SDG 16. CONCLUSION: There is available evidence regarding the connections between ECC and war, refugees, migration, violence, and neglect, as outlined in SDG 16. Future studies are needed to investigate how forced movements directly affects ECC status, how disruptions of peace and stability is a risk factor for ECC, and the associations between ECC and other indicators related to SDG 16 targets.

RESUMO

Emerging Infectious Diseases (EIDs) and Re-Emerging Infectious Diseases (REIDs) constitute significant health problems and are becoming of major importance. Up to 75% of EIDs and REIDs have zoonotic origin. Several factors such as the destruction of natural habitats leading humans and animals to live in close proximity, ecological changes due to natural disasters, population migration resulting from war or conflict, interruption or decrease in disease prevention programs, and insufficient vector control applications and sanitation are involved in disease emergence and distribution. War and natural disasters have a great impact on the emergence/re-emergence of diseases in the population. According to a World Bank estimation, two billion people are living in poverty and fragility situations. Wars destroy health systems and infrastructure, curtail existing disease control programs, and cause population movement leading to an increase in exposure to health risks and favor the emergence of infectious diseases. A total of 432 catastrophic cases associated with natural disasters were recorded globally in 2021. Natural disasters increase the risk of EID and REID outbreaks by damaging infrastructure and leading to displacement of populations. A Generic National Action Plan covering risk assessment, mechanism for action, determination of roles and responsibilities of each sector, the establishment of a coordination mechanism, etc. should be developed.
