CaO and MgO are both reported as effective activators for blast furnace slag. However, the synergistic effect of these two components on the mechanical properties of alkali-activated blast furnace slag remains unclear. In this study, the flexural and compressive strengths of alkali-activated blast furnace slag powder with MgO and CaO range from 0% to 30% by the mass ratio of alkali-activated blast furnace slag powder are investigated. Moreover, the dry shrinkage rate of alkali-activated blast furnace slag powder is measured. One percent refractory fibers by volume of binder materials are added in the alkali-activated blast furnace slag. Some refractory fibers are treated with water flushing, meanwhile, some refractory fibers are directly used without any treatment. Finally, the scanning electron microscope, the thermogravimetric analysis curves and the XRD diffraction spectrums are obtained to reflect the inner mechanism of the alkali-activated blast furnace slag powder's mechanical properties. The water-binder ratios of the alkali-activated blast furnace slag powder are 0.35 and 0.42. The curing ages are 3 d, 7 d and 28 d. The measuring temperature for the specimens ranges from 20 °C to 800 °C. Results show that the flexural and compressive strengths increase with the increased curing age, the decreased water-binder ratio and the addition of refractory fibers. The water-treated refractory fibers can improve the mechanical strengths. The mechanical strengths increase in the form of a quadratic function with the mass ratio of MgO and CaO, when the curing age is 3 d, the increasing effect is the most obvious. A higher water-binder ratio leads to an increasing the drying shrinkage rate. The activated blast furnace slag powder with CaO shows a higher drying shrinkage rate. The mechanical strengths decrease with the increasing testing temperature.

With the trend toward taller and larger structures, the demand for high-strength and lightweight cement concrete has increased in the construction industry. Equipment for transporting ready-mixed concrete is frequently used to bring concrete to construction sites, and washing this equipment generates a large amount of recycled water, which is an industrial by-product. In this study, we recycled this water as the pre-wetting water for lightweight aggregate and as mixing water, and we substituted blast furnace slag powder (BS) and fly ash (FA) as cementitious materials (Cm). In addition, we evaluated the fluidity, compressive strength, tensile strength, drying shrinkage, and accelerated carbonation depth of lightweight ternary cementitious mortars (TCMs) containing artificial lightweight aggregate and recycled water. The 28-day compressive strengths of the lightweight TCM specimens with BS and FA were ~47.2-51.7 MPa, except for the specimen with 20% each of BS and FA (40.2 MPa), which was higher than that of the control specimen with 100% OPC (45.9 MPa). Meanwhile, the 28-day tensile strengths of the lightweight TCM specimens containing BS and FA were ~2.81-3.20 MPa, which are ~13.7-29.5% higher than those of the control specimen. In this study, the TCM specimen with 5% each of BS and FA performed the best in terms of the combination of compressive strength, tensile strength, and carbonation resistance.

Recently, interest in environmentally friendly development has increased worldwide, especially in the construction industry. In this study, blast furnace slag powder (BFSP) and mixed steel fine aggregates were applied to cement mortars to reduce the environmental damage caused by the extraction of natural aggregate and to increase the recycling rate of steel by-products in the construction industry. We investigated the fluidity, compressive strength, tensile strength, accelerated carbonation depth, and chloride ion penetration resistance of mortars with steel slag aggregate and their dependence on the presence or absence of BFSP. Because the recycling rate of ferronickel slag is low and causes environmental problems, we considered mortar samples with mixed fine aggregates containing blast furnace slag fine aggregate (BSA) and ferronickel slag fine aggregate (FSA). The results showed that the 7-day compressive strength of a sample containing both 25% BSA and 25% FSA was nearly 14.8% higher than that of the control sample. This trend is likely due to the high density and angular shape of steel slag particles. The 56-day compressive strength of the sample with BFSP and 50% FSA was approximately 64.9 MPa, which was higher than that of other samples with BFSP. In addition, the chloride ion penetrability test result indicates that the use of BFSP has a greater effect than the use of steel slag aggregate on the chloride ion penetration resistance of mortar. Thus, the substitute rate of steel slag as aggregate can be substantially enhanced if BFSP and steel slag aggregate are used in an appropriate combination.

To evaluate the effects of industrial by-products materials on the performance of porous concrete for plant growth, this study investigated the physical, strength, and freeze/thaw resistances of porous concrete for plant growth, prepared by replacing cement with blast furnace slag powder at 60% by weight, and replacing natural stone aggregates with coarse blast furnace slag aggregates at rates of 0%, 20%, 40%, 60% and 100% by weight. In addition, the effects of adding natural jute fiber and styrene butadiene (SB) latex to these concrete mixtures were evaluated. The void ratio, compressive strength, and freeze/thaw resistance of the samples were measured. With increasing replacement rate of blast furnace aggregates, addition of latex, and mixing of natural jute fiber the void ratio of the concrete was increased. Compressive strength decreased as the replacement rate of blast-furnace slag aggregates increased. The compressive strength decreased after 100 freeze/thaw cycles, regardless of the replacement rate of blast furnace slag aggregates or of the addition of natural jute fiber and latex. The addition of natural jute fiber and latex decreased the compressive strength after 100 freeze/thaw cycles. The test results indicate that the control mixture satisfied the target compressive strength of 10 MPa and the target void ratio of 25% at replacement rates of 0% and 20% for blast furnace aggregates, and that the mixtures containing latex satisfied the criteria up to an aggregate replacement rate of 60%. However, the mixtures containing natural jute fiber did not satisfy these criteria. The relationship between void ratio and residual compressive strength after 100 freeze/thaw cycles indicates that the control mixture and the mixtures containing jute fiber at aggregate replacement rates of 20% and 40% satisfied the target void ratio of 25% and the target residual compressive strength of over 80% after 100 freeze/thaw cycles. The mixtures containing latex and aggregate replacement rates up to 60% satisfied the target void ratio and compressive strength.
