RESUMO

Cerebral ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) refers to a secondary brain injury that results in mitochondrial dysfunction of variable extent, leading to neuronal cell damage. The impact of this process has mainly been studied in the short term, from the early hours up to one week after blood flow reperfusion, and in the ischemic hemisphere only. The focus of this study was to assess the long-term impacts of I/R on mitochondrial functionality using high-resolution fluorespirometry to evaluate state-dependent activities in both ischemic (ipsilateral) and non-ischemic (contralateral) hemispheres of male mice 60, 90, 120, and 180 days after I/R caused by 60-min-long filament-induced middle cerebral artery occlusion (fMCAo). Our results indicate that in cortical tissues, succinate-supported oxygen flux (Complex I&II OXPHOS state) and H2O2 production (Complex II LEAK state) were significantly decreased in the fMCAo (stroke) group ipsilateral hemisphere compared to measurements in the contralateral hemisphere 60 and 90 days after stroke. In hippocampal tissues, during the Complex I&II ET state, mitochondrial respiration was generally lower in the ipsilateral compared to the contralateral hemisphere 90 days following stroke. An aging-dependent impact on mitochondria oxygen consumption following I/R injury was observed 180 days after surgery, wherein Complex I&II activities were lowest in both hemispheres. The obtained results highlight the importance of long-term studies in the field of ischemic stroke, particularly when evaluating mitochondrial bioenergetics in specific brain regions within and between separately affected cerebral hemispheres.

Stereology is a discipline that allows us to obtain quantitative information about the geometric structure of three-dimensional objects. In this study, the volume of grey matter (GM), white matter (WM), and lateral ventricle (LV) of the cerebral hemispheres (CH) in sheep and goats were calculated. For this purpose, six healthy male sheep and goat brains (1-2 years old) without any anomaly were used. Brains were fixed with 10% formaldehyde in the skull. The skull was opened using standard anatomical dissection methods, and the brains were carefully removed. Brain weight and volume were measured (using Archimedes' principle) after the meninges were removed. The cerebral hemispheres were separated from the other parts of the brain by a section made in front of the rostral colliculus. In the same way, the weight and volume of the cerebral hemispheres were measured. Afterward, the cerebral hemispheres were blocked with agar, and transversal cross sections (from rostral to caudal) with an average thickness of 3.42 mm were taken from the cerebral hemispheres. Grey matter was stained with Berlin blue macroscopic staining method. The stained cross sections were scanned at 600 dpi resolution, and a point counting grid was placed on the images with the ImageJ software. Cavalieri's principle calculated the surface area and volume measurements of the grey matter, white matter, and lateral ventricle. GM, WM, and LV volumes in sheep and goat cerebral hemispheres were calculated as 54.94, 21.48 and 3.06 mL in sheep, 57.46, 24.13 and 3.12 mL in goats, respectively. The percentages of these structures in the total hemisphere volume were 71.83%, 28.17% and 4.00% in sheep, 70.42%, 29.58% and 3.82% in goats, respectively. Asymmetry was not observed in cerebral hemispheres in both species. A difference was found in the WM, LV and LV: CH ratios in the right/left comparison of the goat (p < 0.05). In comparing sheep and goats, a significant difference was observed in WM right, WM left, WM total, CH left and CH total (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the cerebral hemispheres' grey matter and white matter ratio are frequently used to diagnose neurodegenerative diseases. In recent years, the increase in neurodegenerative disease models in farm animals has been enormous. It is thought that these values obtained from healthy animals in the current study will be important for such experimental studies in the future.

RESUMO

Gliosarcoma is a rare and highly malignant central nervous system tumor that accounts for 1%-8% of glioblastomas; it usually occurs in middle-aged and older adults between 40 and 60 years of age and is rare in children. We report an 11-year-old boy with right frontal lobe gliosarcoma who underwent aggressive gross total resection and postoperative radiotherapy, experienced recurrence and subsequently underwent a second operation. To better understand the disease and explore treatment options, we briefly report this case and review the relevant literature.

Ischemic stroke is a cerebrovascular lesion caused by local ischemia and hypoxia. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic inflammatory disease that disturbs immune homeostasis and predisposes patients to ischemic stroke. The mechanism by which DM exacerbates stroke remains unclear, although it may involve disturbances in immune homeostasis. Regulatory T cells (Tregs) play a regulatory role in many diseases, but the mechanism of Tregs in diabetes complicated by stroke remains unclear. Sodium butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid that increases Treg levels. This study examined the role of sodium butyrate in the prognosis of neurological function in diabetic stroke and the mechanism by which Tregs are amplified in the bilateral cerebral hemispheres. We evaluated the brain infarct volume, observed 48-h neuronal injury and 28-day behavioral changes, and calculated the 28-day survival rate in mice. We also measured Treg levels in peripheral blood and brain tissue, recorded changes in the blood‒brain barrier and water channel proteins and neurotrophic changes in mice, measured cytokine levels and peripheral B-cell distribution in bilateral hemispheres and peripheral blood, and examined the polarization of microglia and the distribution of peripheral T-cell subpopulations in bilateral hemispheres. Diabetes significantly exacerbated the poor prognosis and neurological deficits in mice with stroke, and sodium butyrate significantly improved infarct volume, prognosis, and neurological function and showed different mechanisms in brain tissue and peripheral blood. The potential regulatory mechanism in brain tissue involved modulating Tregs/TGF-ß/microglia to suppress neuroinflammation, while that in peripheral blood involved improving the systemic inflammatory response through Tregs/TGF-ß/T cells.

Cerebral perfusion is maintained at a consistent value irrespective of changes in systemic blood pressure or disease-induced changes in general physical condition. This regulatory mechanism is effective despite postural changes, working even during changes in posture, such as those from sitting to standing or from the head-down to the head-up position. However, no study has addressed changes in perfusion separately in the left and right cerebral hemispheres, and there has been no specific investigation of the effect of the lateral decubitus position on perfusion in each hemisphere. Surgery, particularly respiratory surgery, is often performed with the patient in the lateral decubitus position, and since intraoperative anesthesia may also have an effect, it is important to ascertain the effect of the lateral decubitus position on perfusion in the left and right cerebral hemispheres in the absence of anesthesia. The effects of the lateral decubitus position on heart rate, blood pressure, and hemodynamic in the left and right cerebral hemispheres assessed by regional saturation of oxygen measured by near-infrared spectroscopy were investigated in healthy adult volunteers. Although the lateral decubitus position causes systemic circulatory changes, it may not cause any difference in hemodynamic between the left and right cerebral hemispheres.

Ornithopod dinosaurs were a successful group before they became extinct at the end of the Cretaceous. They were present on every continent, though they were rare in the Southern Hemisphere. We present the results of our work on the brain of these dinosaurs as an attempt to determine which evolutionary trends affected it. Old and new technologies allow us to peer into the skull of long extinct animals and retrieve information about their brain. First we provide a short description of the brain of ornithopod dinosaurs from Europe and Asia, then we sum up the characteristics that can be gathered from it. The presence of valleculae helps us to assess the actual size of the brain with more confidence. The olfactory peduncles are large and these animals had a good sense of smell. There is a trend toward an increase in the size of the cerebral hemispheres, and a more straight-lined brain. The latter can be the result of the ontogeny and the size achieved by the adult animal on the development of the brain. Other characteristics, like the development of the cerebral hemispheres and the encephalization quotient, allude to Hadrosauridae having had cognitive abilities more developed than previously assumed. This is in adequacy with other data from the physical characteristics (e.g., crests) and the social life (e.g., living in herds, communal nests) of these dinosaurs, which denote high and complex behaviors like care for their young, sexual courtship, and gregariousness.

In the human brain, the temporal-parietal junction (TPJ) is a histologically heterogenous area that includes the ventral portions of the parietal cortex and the caudal superior temporal gyrus sector adjacent to the posterior end of the Sylvian fissure. The anatomical heterogeneity of the TPJ is matched by its seemingly ubiquitous involvement in different cognitive functions that span from memory to language, attention, self-consciousness, and social behavior. In line with established clinical evidence, recent fMRI investigations have confirmed relevant hemispheric differences in the TPJ function. Most importantly, the same investigations have highlighted that, in each hemisphere, different subsectors of the TPJ are putatively involved in different cognitive functions. Here I review empirical evidence and theoretical proposals that were recently advanced to gain a unifying interpretation of TPJ function(s). In the final part of the review, a new overarching interpretation of the TPJ function is proposed. Current advances in cognitive neuroscience can provide important insights that help improve the clinical understanding of cognitive deficits experienced by patients with lesions centered in or involving the TPJ area.

BACKGROUND: Gliosarcoma is a rare variant of IDH- wild type glioblastoma with both glial and mesenchymal differentiation. It accounts for approximately 2% of glioblastomas and has a poor prognosis similar to that of classic glioblastoma. It is seen mostly between 40 and 60 years of age with a mean age over 50 years. Pediatric gliosarcoma is even rarer than gliosarcoma in adults. We describe the clinicopathological features of gliosarcoma in patients under 20 years of age and determine whether there are significant differences from gliosarcoma in adults. We also present detailed review of published literature on pediatric gliosarcoma. METHODS: Slides of gliosarcomas in patients under 20 years of age were reviewed. Clinicopathological features were noted in detail and follow up was obtained. RESULTS: Eleven cases of gliosarcoma were reported in patients under 20 years of age. Ages ranged from three to 19 years (mean age 13 years). Frontal, parietal and temporal lobes were the commonest locations. Mean and median tumor size was six and five cm respectively. All 11 cases demonstrated the classic biphasic pattern. In 10 cases, glial component was astrocytic and was highlighted on GFAP. Sarcomatous component in most cases resembled fibrosarcoma and was high grade in 72.7%. Glial areas were reticulin poor while sarcomatous areas were reticulin rich. In over 45% cases, bizarre tumor giant cells were seen in the sarcomatous areas. In 1 case, sarcomatous areas showed extensive bone and cartilage formation. Other histologic features included hyalinized blood vessels, hemorrhage, infarction, gemistocytic cells, rhabdoid cells etc. Follow up was available in nine patients, five received chemoradiation post resection while three received radiotherapy only. Prognosis was dismal and eight patients died within one to 14 months following resection. CONCLUSIONS: Gliosarcomas in patients under 20 comprised 13% of all gliosarcomas reported during the study period. Frequency and mean age were higher compared to other published reports. Pathological features were similar to those described in literature. Clinicopathological features and prognosis of pediatric gliosarcomas were similar to adult gliosarcomas.

The cerebral venous drainage system in humans has several unique characteristics that set it apart from its arterial counterpart. The intracranial drainage system can be broadly divided into supra- and infratentorial components. The supratentorial venous drainage is further subclassified into superficial and deep systems, each with a unique set of features. A thorough knowledge of the normal and variant venous drainage pathways is important to understand the different pathologic processes involving the venous vasculature, to identify and anticipate the different venous channels encountered during surgery and also to predict the possible sequelae of intentional or inadvertent venous sacrifice during surgery. This chapter summarizes the anatomic and radiologic characteristics of the venous supply of the supratentorial compartment of the brain, reviews its general characteristics, sheds light on the different classifications and nomenclature used for its descriptions, and briefly discusses its embryologic development.

Hemispheric asymmetries in arithmetic have been hypothesized based on neuropsychological, developmental, and neuroimaging work. However, it has been challenging to separate asymmetries related to arithmetic specifically, from those associated general cognitive or linguistic processes. Here we attempt to experimentally isolate the processing of numerical meaning in arithmetic problems from language and memory retrieval by employing novel non-symbolic addition problems, where participants estimated the sum of two dot arrays and judged whether a probe dot array was the correct sum of the first two arrays. Furthermore, we experimentally manipulated which hemisphere receive the probe array first using a visual half-field paradigm while recording event-related potentials (ERP). We find that neural sensitivity to numerical meaning in arithmetic arises under left but not right visual field presentation during early and middle portions of the late positive complex (LPC, 400-800 ms). Furthermore, we find that subsequent accuracy for judgements of whether the probe is the correct sum is better under right visual field presentation than left, suggesting a left hemisphere advantage for integrating information for categorization or decision making related to arithmetic. Finally, neural signatures of operational momentum, or differential sensitivity to whether the probe was greater or less than the sum, occurred at a later portion of the LPC (800-1000 ms) and regardless of visual field of presentation, suggesting a temporal and functional dissociation between magnitude and ordinal processing in arithmetic. Together these results provide novel evidence for differences in timing and hemispheric lateralization for several cognitive processes involved in arithmetic thinking.

Altered behaviors have been reported in many marine fish following exposure to high CO2 concentrations. However, the mechanistic link between elevated CO2 and activation of brain regions in fish is unknown. Herein, we examined the relative quantification and location of c-Fos expression in marine medaka following acute (360 min) and short-term (7 d) exposure to CO2-enriched water (1000 ppm and 1800 ppm CO2). In the control and two treatment groups, pH was stable at 8.21, 7.92 and 7.64, respectively. After acute exposure to seawater acidified by enrichment with CO2, there was a clear upregulation of c-Fos protein in the medaka brain (P < 0.05). c-Fos protein expression peaked after 120 min exposure in the two treatment groups and thereafter began to decline. There were marked increases in c-Fos-labeling in the ventricular and periventricular zones of the cerebral hemispheres and the medulla oblongata. After 1800 ppm CO2 exposure for 7 d, medaka showed significant preference for dark zones during the initial 2 min period. c-Fos protein expression in the ventricular and periventricular zones of the diencephalon in medaka exposed to 1000 ppm and 1800 ppm CO2 were 0.51 ± 0.10 and 1.34 ± 0.30, respectively, which were significantly higher than controls (P < 0.05). Highest doublecortin protein expression occurred in theventricular zones of the diencephalon and mesencephalon. These findings suggest that the ventricular and periventricular zones of the cerebral hemispheres and the medulla oblongata of marine medaka are involved in rapid acid-base regulation. Prolonged ocean acidification may induce cell mitosis and differentiation in the adult medaka brain.

The aim of this research was to determine brain, cerebral hemispheres and cerebellum volume and volume ratios by using stereological methods and investigate morphological differences between female and male New Zealand rabbits. The study was applied on 14-month old (10 male and 10 female) New Zealand rabbits. The materials removed from the cavum cranii using dorsal approach. After following routine histological procedure, paraffin blocks were prepared and cut every seventieth section at 10 µm thickness. Slides were stained with Crossmon's triple stain and photographed. The sectional images obtained were transferred to ImageJ program to estimate grey and white matter volume on cerebral hemispheres and cerebellum with principle of Cavalieri. According to results, there was no asymmetry on the left and right cerebral hemispheres of New Zealand rabbits. In the total hemisphere volume calculated by Cavalieri principle, grey and white matter ratio was 81.57% and 18.43% in female, 82.80% and 17.20% in male. It was found that the white matter was significantly higher in females than males in cerebral hemispheres (p < .05). Also, it was found that grey and white matter ratio in total cerebellum volume was 67.82% and 32.18% in female, 67.94% and 32.06% in male respectively. It was determined that the females' white matter was larger than male rabbits in cerebellum (p < .05). It is thought that morphometric data obtained from this study will contribute to the existing anatomical knowledge and also considered as reference values in the clinical sciences.

This article investigates the way a graded approach can be implemented in the organization of the project-based learning process in accordance with the personality characteristics of subjects. This study is based on the results analysis of the key features of project-based learning as one of the methods for developing human resources. The assessment of subjects' individual response to stressors at different project stages is justified to be relevant in order to improve project efficiency in the framework of the learning process. The assessment of the individual response of subjects to stressors was carried out according to the activation dynamics of cerebral hemispheres. The research target was to determine features of the subjects' individual responses to the project activity stressors and to identify specifics of the individual responding at each of its stages. The study involved 56 final-year students of different majors. Aktivatsiometr ATs-9K, a device for comprehensive psychophysiological diagnosis designed by Yu. A. Tsagarelli, was used to monitor hemispheric activation. This hardware and software complex consists of a device diagnosing the activation of cerebral hemispheres based on the galvanic skin response and PC software for automatic data processing. The individual typological indicators of activation (13 measurements in a familiar environment) and activity-situational indicators of activation (seven single measurements at different stages of the project activity) were calculated. The stress response was diagnosed if the activity-situational activation indicators of the cerebral hemispheres exceeded the individual typological activation indices by more than 1.5 times. The results of the empirical study show different types of individual responses to stressors at different stages of the project activity. The analysis of the profiles of individual responses to stressors made it possible to differentiate subjects, and also identify groups of students with the maximum resources for each stage of activity.

Asymmetry of the human brain is a well-known phenomenon, but the nature and extent of these differences throughout postnatal development have not been examined. Accordingly, linear measurements of the brains of 121 infants, children, and adolescents were determined to ascertain cerebral hemispheric asymmetries. Using multiple statistical methods, the results showed that: 1) the frontal lobe is wider on the right, while the occipital lobe is wider on the left; 2) there are no side to side differences in cerebral hemispheric length or height; and 3) there are no major sex differences. Especially notable is the lack of any correlation between side to side differences in length, width, or height and increasing age, which was also the case for cerebral hemispheric area or volume with increasing age. Regarding petalias: 1) the right frontal petalia occurs in 61%, the left occipital in 60%, and both petalias in 36% of the cohort; 2) the right frontal and left occipital petalias are of similar lengths; 3) the distances of both petalias increase with advancing age but not when scaled to either cerebral hemispheric area or volume, indicating that petalias are equally prominent early in postnatal life compared to later development; and 4) there are no major sex differences in the frequency or magnitude of either petalia. These findings provide comprehensive new information regarding age and sex related cerebral hemispheric asymmetries during development.

The Own-Race Bias (ORB) is the ability to better recognize and categorize a face when the depicted person belongs to the observer's ethnicity group. The relationship between the ORB and hemispheric asymmetries has been poorly explored, and the present study was aimed at investigating this relationship, as well as that between the ORB and the bias to better recognize own gender faces. Female and male Caucasian participants categorized the ethnicity of Caucasian and Asian female and male facial stimuli in a divided visual field paradigm. In a control experiment the same stimuli were presented centrally, confirming the ORB. Importantly, the lateralized presentation reversed the bias with higher accuracy and shorter response times in the categorization of Asian than Caucasian faces. This reversed bias was significant for female and male faces, and it was observed when stimuli were presented in the left but not in the right visual field, revealing the crucial role of the right hemisphere in face processing. These results shed new light on the hemispheric abilities in the categorization of facial features, and they are compared to previous evidence of cerebral asymmetries for facial age, gender and identity, both in healthy participants and in neurological patients.

INTRODUCTION: The left and right cerebral hemispheres are not equivalent in performance of cognitive functions associated with risk factors of drug abuse, nor is their development equivalently affected by drugs of abuse. The question addressed here is whether drugs of abuse affect cognitive function as assessed by brain activation, in particular related to impulsivity, and/or whether weaker brain activation associated with impulsivity increases the risk of drug abuse. METHODOLOGY: Using PubMed and key words, articles were selected that addressed brain activation in individuals who used or abused one of the psychoactive drugs. Findings are summarized. RESULTS: For each of the drugs, hypoactivation was found. In some cases this reduced activation was reported predominantly for the right or both hemispheres. There were fewer reports for the left hemisphere. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Rarely do authors focus on why only one or the other hemisphere is affected or why specific structures are affected. Neurobiological differences between the hemispheres and among various brain structures could provide clues to the specific effect of drugs. Increased attention to this gap in research will give additional insights into the etiology of drug abuse and provide direction for treatment.

BACKGROUND: We sought to determine the impact of lesion lateralization and lesion volume on swallow impairment on group-level by comparing patients with left and right hemisphere strokes and on patient-level by analyzing patients individually. METHODS: We performed a retrospective, observational, cross-sectional study of 46 patients with unilateral (22 left, 24 right), acute, first-ever, ischemic strokes who received a diffusion weighted MRI (DW-MRI) and modified barium swallow study (MBSS) during their acute hospital stay. We determined lesion side on the DW-MRI and measured swallow physiology using the Modified Barium Swallow Impairment Profile (MBSImP™©), Penetration-Aspiration Scale (PAS), swallow timing, distance, area, and speed measures. We performed Pearson's Chi-Square and Wilcoxon Rank-Sum tests to compare patients with left and right hemisphere strokes, and Pearson or Spearman correlation, simple logistic regression, linear, and logistic multivariable regression modeling to assess the relationship between variables. RESULTS: At the group-level, there were no differences in MBSImP oral swallow impairment scores between patients with left and right hemisphere stroke. In adjusted analyses, patients with right hemisphere strokes showed significantly worse MBSImP pharyngeal total scores (p = 0.02), worse MBSImP component specific scores for laryngeal vestibular closure (Bonferroni adjusted alpha p ≤ 0.0029), and worse PAS scores (p = 0.03). Patients with right hemisphere strokes showed worse timing, distance, area, and speed measures. Lesion volume was significantly associated with MBSImP pharyngeal residue (p = 0.03) and pharyngeal total scores (p = 0.04). At the patient-level, 24% of patients (4 left, 7 right) showed opposite patterns of MBSImP oral and pharyngeal swallow impairment than seen at group-level. CONCLUSION: Our study showed differences in swallow physiology between patients with right and left unilateral strokes with patients with right hemisphere strokes showing worse pharyngeal impairment. Lesion lateralization seems to be a valuable marker for the severity of swallowing impairment at the group-level but less informative at the patient-level.

BACKGROUND: Studies that evaluate gait rehabilitation programs for individuals with stroke often consider time since stroke of more than six months. In addition, most of these studies do not use lesion etiology or affected cerebral hemisphere as study factors. However, it is unknown whether these factors are associated with post-stroke motor performance after the spontaneous recovery period. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether time since stroke onset, etiology, and lesion side is associated with spatiotemporal and angular gait parameters of individuals with chronic stroke. METHODS: Fifty individuals with chronic hemiparesis (20 women) were evaluated. The sample was stratified according to time since stroke (between 6 and 12 months, between 13 and 36 months, and over 36 months), affected cerebral hemisphere (left or right) and lesion etiology (ischemic and hemorrhagic). The participants were evaluated during overground walking at self-selected gait speed, and spatiotemporal and angular gait parameters were calculated. Results Differences between gait speed, stride length, hip flexion, and knee flexion were observed in subgroups stratified based on lesion etiology. Survivors of a hemorrhagic stroke exhibited more severe gait impairment. Subgroups stratified based on time since stroke only showed intergroup differences for stride length, and subgroups stratified based on affected cerebral hemisphere displayed between-group differences for swing time symmetry ratio. CONCLUSION: In order to recruit a more homogeneous sample, more accurate results were obtained and an appropriate rehabilitation program was offered, researchers and clinicians should consider that gait pattern might be associated with time since stroke, affected cerebral hemisphere and lesion etiology.

The psychostimulant methylphenidate (MPH) is increasingly used in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). While there is little evidence for common brain pathology in ADHD, some studies suggest a right hemisphere dysfunction among people diagnosed with the condition. However, in spite of the high usage of MPH in children and adolescents, its mechanism of action is poorly understood. Given that MPH blocks the neuronal transporters for dopamine and noradrenaline, most research into the effects of MPH on the brain has largely focused on these two monoamine neurotransmitter systems. Interestingly, recent studies have demonstrated metabolic changes in the brain of ADHD patients, but the impact of MPH on endogenous brain metabolites remains unclear. In this study, a proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR)-based metabolomics approach was employed to investigate the effects of MPH on brain biomolecules. Adolescent male Sprague Dawley rats were injected intraperitoneally with MPH (5.0 mg/kg) or saline (1.0 ml/kg), and cerebral extracts from the left and right hemispheres were analysed. A total of 22 variables (representing 13 distinct metabolites) were significantly increased in the MPH-treated samples relative to the saline-treated controls. The upregulated metabolites included: amino acid neurotransmitters such as GABA, glutamate and aspartate; large neutral amino acids (LNAA), including the aromatic amino acids (AAA) tyrosine and phenylalanine, both of which are involved in the metabolism of dopamine and noradrenaline; and metabolites associated with energy and cell membrane dynamics, such as creatine and myo-inositol. No significant differences in metabolite concentrations were found between the left and right cerebral hemispheres. These findings provide new insights into the mechanisms of action of the anti-ADHD drug MPH.

Arithmetic expressions, like verbal sentences, incrementally lead readers to anticipate potential appropriate completions. Existing work in the language domain has helped us understand how the two hemispheres differently participate in and contribute to the cognitive process of sentence reading, but comparatively little work has been done with mathematical equation processing. In this study, we address this gap by examining the ERP response to provided answers to simple multiplication problems, which varied both in levels of correctness (given an equation context) and in visual field of presentation (joint attention in central presentation, or biased processing to the left or right hemisphere through contralateral visual field presentation). When answers were presented to any of the visual fields (hemispheres), there was an effect of correctness prior to the traditional N400 timewindow, which we interpret as a P300 in response to a detected target item (the correct answer). In addition to this response, equation answers also elicited a late positive complex (LPC) for incorrect answers. Notably, this LPC effect was most prominent in the left visual field (right hemisphere), and it was also sensitive to the confusability of the wrong answer - incorrect answers that were closely related to the correct answer elicited a smaller LPC. This suggests a special, prolonged role for the right hemisphere during answer evaluation.
