RESUMO

This study comprehensively investigated the effects of high-temperature cooking (HT), complex enzyme hydrolysis (CE), and high-temperature cooking combined enzymatic hydrolysis (HE) on the chemical composition, microstructure, and functional attributes of soluble dietary fiber (SDF) extracted from corn bran. The results demonstrated that HE-SDF yielded the highest output at 13.80 ± 0.20 g/100 g, with enhancements in thermal stability, viscosity, hydration properties, adsorption capacity, and antioxidant activity. Cluster analysis revealed three distinct categories of SDF's physicochemical properties. Principal component analysis (PCA) confirmed the superior functional properties of HE-SDF. Correlation analysis showed positive relationships between the monosaccharide composition, purity, and viscosity of SDF and most of its functional attributes, whereas particle size and zeta potential were inversely correlated. Furthermore, a highly significant positive correlation was observed between crystallinity and thermal properties. These findings suggest that the HE method constitutes a viable strategy for enhancing the quality of SDF sourced from corn bran.

RESUMO

This study examined the impact of live bread yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) on the nutritional characteristics of Asian dried noodles. Micronutrient analysis of fermented noodles revealed a 6.9% increase in the overall amino acid content, a 37.1% increase in the vitamin B content and a 63.0% decrease in the phytic acid level. Molecular weight analysis of starch and protein contents revealed moderate decrease in the fermented noodles. The in vitro digestion of fermented noodles showed a slightly faster initial acidification, four-fold decrease in the initial shear viscosity (from 8.85 to 1.94 Pa·s). The initial large food particle count (>2 mm diameter) was 19.5% lower in the fermented noodles. The fermented noodles contained slightly higher free sugar content (73.5 mg g-1 noodle) during the gastric digestion phase. The overall nutrition and digestion results indicate nutritional improvement and digestion-easing attributes in the fermented noodles.

RESUMO

Academia often uses the "circular geometry hypothesis" to explain the sensing principle of the human semicircular canal (SCC) system for angular acceleration, which is widely accepted as an important angular acceleration sensor in the human balance system. On the basis of this hypothesis and the anatomical structure of human SCCs, a series of physical SCC models with different geometries at 4× magnification were prepared via three-dimensional printing and modification of hydrogels. Theoretical models of the SCC perception mechanism were established. Then, impulse angular acceleration, sinusoidal rotation, and sinusoidal linear stimulation were applied to the models, and their responses were visually observed and analyzed in detail. As a result, the circular SCC model had a larger system gain and a smaller phase difference for angular acceleration stimulation but a smaller system gain and a larger phase difference for linear acceleration stimulation. These results verified that the circular semicircular canal was more sensitive to angular acceleration. Our bionic model is hoped to be used for demonstrating the human SCC working process, facilitating researchers in better understanding of the working mechanism of the human SCC, or as a manual model for medical staff to simulate the diagnosis and treatment of human SCC.

RESUMO

To investigate the seasonal characteristics in air pollution in Chengdu, a single particle aerosol mass spectrometry was used to continuously observe atmospheric fine particulate matter during one-month periods in summer and winter, respectively. The results showed that, apart from O3, the concentrations of other pollutants (CO, NO2, SO2, PM2.5 and PM10) were significantly higher in winter than in summer. All single particle aerosols were divided into seven categories: biomass burning (BB), coal combustion (CC), Dust, vehicle emission (VE), K mixed with nitrate (K-NO3), K mixed with sulfate and nitrate (K-SN), and K mixed with sulfate (K-SO4) particles. The highest contributions in both seasons were VE particles (24%). The higher contributions of K-SO4 (16%) and K-NO3 (10%) particles occurred in summer and winter, respectively, as a result of their different formation mechanisms. S-containing (K-SO4 and K-SN), VE, and BB particles caused the evolution of pollution in both seasons, and they can be considered as targets for future pollution reduction. The mixing of primary sources particles (VE, Dust, CC, and BB) with secondary components was stronger in winter than in summer. In summer, as pollution worsens, the mixing of primary sources particles with 62 [NO3]- weakened, but the mixing with 97 [HSO4]- increased. However, in winter, the mixing state of particles did not exhibit an obvious evolution rules. The potential source areas in summer were mainly distributed in the southern region of Sichuan, while in winter, besides the southern region, the contribution of the western region cannot be ignored.

RESUMO

VOCs (Volatile organic compounds) exert a vital role in ozone and secondary organic aerosol production, necessitating investigations into their concentration, chemical characteristics, and source apportionment for the effective implementation of measures aimed at preventing and controlling atmospheric pollution. From July to October 2020, online monitoring was conducted in the main urban area of Shijiazhuang to collect data on VOCs and analyze their concentrations and reactivity. Additionally, the PMF (positive matrix factorization) method was utilized to identify the VOCs sources. Results indicated that the TVOCs (total VOCs) concentration was (96.7 ± 63.4 µg/m3), with alkanes exhibiting the highest concentration of (36.1 ± 26.4 µg/m3), followed by OVOCs (16.4 ± 14.4 µg/m3). The key active components were alkenes and aromatics, among which xylene, propylene, toluene, propionaldehyde, acetaldehyde, ethylene, and styrene played crucial roles as reactive species. The sources derived from PMF analysis encompassed vehicle emissions, solvent and coating sources, combustion sources, industrial emissions sources, as well as plant sources, the contribution of which were 37.80%, 27.93%, 16.57%, 15.24%, and 2.46%, respectively. Hence, reducing vehicular exhaust emissions and encouraging neighboring industries to adopt low-volatile organic solvents and coatings should be prioritized to mitigate VOCs levels.

RESUMO

As one of the fundamental physical quantities, temperature is extremely important in various fields. In order to study the temperature sensing characteristics of dual-emitting center phosphors, Bi3+-doped and Bi3+/Sm3+-doped Sr2Ga2GeO7 phosphors were synthesized by high-temperature solid-phase method. Under 312 nm excitation, the Sr2Ga2GeO7:Bi3+ phosphor exhibits a blue broadband emission corresponding to the 3P1 → 1S0 transition of Bi3+ ions. By testing the temperature change spectrum of phosphors, it was found that Bi3+ exhibited strong thermal sensitivity. However, due to the fact that single ion doped phosphors are easily affected by other factors when applied to the field of temperature sensing, based on the thermal sensitivity of Bi3+, Sm3+ with low temperature sensitivity was selected as the co-doped ion, and it was found that the two ions had different thermal quenching characteristics when the temperature change spectrum was tested. Using the temperature detection method based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of the dual emission centers, it was found that the best absolute sensitivity Sa was 3.125% K-1 and the maximum relative sensitivity Sr was 1.275% K-1 in the range of 303-423 K. These results show that Sr2Ga2GeO7:Bi3+/Sm3+ phosphors have broad application prospects in the field of optical temperature sensing.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer, a prevalent malignancy, poses a severe threat to the health of residents in China. Timely intervention in early stages can extend patients' survival. AIM: To analyze clinical characteristics of patients with early gastric cancer and efficacy and risk of complications associated with endoscopic resection. METHODS: This study included 175 patients with early gastric cancer treated at our hospital, with no restrictions on sex or age. General data, pathological information, and endoscopic biopsy results were obtained. The clinical characteristics of early gastric cancer were analyzed, and endoscopic resection was performed. Postoperative efficacy and incidence of complications were monitored. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 26.0 and GraphPad Prism 8.0 software. RESULTS: A total of 175 patients with early gastric cancer were included, with 75.43% (n = 132) males and 24.57% (n = 43) females. 38.29% (n = 67) and 35.43% (n = 62) of patients had a history of smoking and alcohol consumption, respectively. Comorbidities included diabetes (8.57%, n = 15), coronary heart disease (10.29%, n = 18), and hypertension (43.43%, n = 76), which was highly prevalent. A history of abdominal surgery and family history of digestive system cancer accounted for 21.14% and 17.14%, respectively. The most common lesion location was the antral part of the stomach (52.00%, n = 91), followed by the gastric angle, body, and fundus. The pathological types were predominantly high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (28.00%, n = 49) and well-differentiated adenocarcinoma (26.86%, n = 47), followed by moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma, high-moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma, and moderate-lowly differentiated adenocarcinoma. 89.14% of the patients had intestinal metaplasia and 85.14% had atrophy. After endoscopic resection, re-examination revealed that 13 patients had cancer cells at the tissue margin, with a positive margin rate of 7.43%. Postoperative complications included no cases of gastrointestinal obstruction, but incisional infection (2.86%, n = 5), gastric perforation (1.14%, n = 2), and gastric bleeding (4%, n = 7) were present, with an overall incidence of 8.00%. CONCLUSION: Analysis of the clinical characteristics indicated that early gastric cancer is more prevalent in males with a history of hypertension, with lesions most commonly occurring in the antral region of the stomach. The pathological types are often high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia and well-differentiated adenocarcinoma, with over 85% of patients having comorbid intestinal metaplasia and atrophy. Despite endoscopic resection, a positive margin rate persisted, indicating a probability of residual cancer at the margins. Postoperative complications, such as gastrointestinal obstruction, incisional infection, gastric perforation, and gastric bleeding can occur and require timely symptomatic treatment.

RESUMO

This editorial discusses the article written by Tchilikidi et al that was published in the latest edition of the World Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery. Genetic and molecular profiling of perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (pCCA) has identified a number of key abnormalities that drive tumor growth and spread, including pyruvate kinase M2, proline rich 11, and transcription factor 7, etc. pCCA has specific genetic and molecular features that can be used to develop personalized treatment plans. Personalized treatment approaches offer new opportunities for effectively targeting the underlying drivers of tumor growth and progression. The findings based on tumor genetic and molecular characteristics highlight the importance of developing personalized treatment strategies.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The identification of crash characteristics associated with traumatic rupture of the aorta (TRA) can significantly enhance countermeasures against TRA. Conventional epidemiological approaches struggle to adequately handle the substantial variability of traffic crash data. Consequently, this study aims to integrate conventional epidemiological analysis with data-driven cluster analysis to more comprehensively analyze TRA-related crash characteristics. METHODS: A total of 350 unweighted TRA crashes were extracted from traffic crash databases including comprehensive crash details and injury descriptions. Initially, a selection was made of 11 continuous variables and 9 categorical variables, describing crash characteristics. After correlation analysis and principal component analysis were applied to the dataset, K-prototype clustering was finally conducted using 6retained categorical variables and 6 principal components derived from the continuous variables. RESULTS: This study found significant age and gender disparities among TRA victims, with 50% falling within the age range of 25-59 years and an overwhelming majority (62.2%) being males. Side impacts emerged as the primary cause of TRA-related crashes (37.2%), followed by collisions with off-road objects (28.6%) and head-on collisions (24.8%). Cluster analyses revealed 6 distinct clusters within the TRA-related crash dataset. These clusters were characterized by factors such as vehicle model year, curb weight, collision dynamics, and seatbelt usage, providing a deeper understanding of the heterogeneity in TRA incidents and their associated factors. CONCLUSIONS: Although limitations related to available data sources and factors such as accompanying injuries and vehicle weight warrant further comprehensive investigations in the future, this study contributes valuable insights into TRA analysis to enhance understanding and prevention strategies.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Depressive symptoms, goal progress, and goal characteristics are interrelated, but the directionality of these relationships is unclear. METHODS: In a 6-wave longitudinal study (N = 431; 2002 total surveys), we examine the bidirectionality of the relationships between depressive symptoms, goal characteristics (commitment, self-efficacy, and perception of other's support), and goal progress for academic and interpersonal goals at 2-week intervals. Separate random-intercept cross-lagged panel models were tested for each goal characteristic across both goals. RESULTS: At the within-person level, goal progress significantly positively predicted commitment, self-efficacy, and perception of others' support for the goal. Most of the other hypothesized paths were nonsignificant, including paths between depressive symptoms and progress. At the between-person level, all variables were significantly correlated, with some effects significantly larger for the interpersonal than the academic goal. DISCUSSION: The results suggest that when it comes to depressive symptoms and goal pursuit, general tendencies may be more important than variations over 2-week intervals.

RESUMO

AIMS: This study assessed the achievement rates of metabolic risk factor targets and their association with clinical characteristics and comorbidities among individuals with type 2 diabetes (T2D) treated in the primary care in Austria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A countrywide cross-sectional study, the AUSTRO-PROFIT, was conducted in Austria from 2021 to 2023 on 635 individuals with T2D. Metabolic risk factor targets were defined as the percentage of people achieving low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) <70 mg/dL (or < 55 mg/dL if cardiovascular or microvascular disease was present), glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) <7% (53 mmol/mol) and blood pressure < 140/90 mmHg. RESULTS: The mean age of the participants was 65.7 ± 11.2 years; the median duration of T2D was 8 (4-14) years; and 58.7% of the participants were male. The percentages of participants achieving LDL-C, HbA1c, blood pressure and all targets were 44%, 53%, 57% and 13%, respectively. Older age, longer T2D duration, cardiovascular disease and microvascular complications were associated with suboptimal achievement of metabolic risk factor targets. CONCLUSIONS: The AUSTRO-PROFIT study revealed notable variations in metabolic targets achievement with respect to clinical characteristics and comorbidities. These findings underscore the importance of establishing national diabetes registries and implementing multifactorial targeted and individualized interventions to further improve the quality of T2D care in primary care settings in Austria.

RESUMO

This review describes some processes for converting plantain pulp into flour and semolina and the influences that operating conditions can have on some of the technological characteristics (functional and pasting) of this flour. Some traditional African dishes that can be prepared with plantain flour are also presented. A literature review was conducted using a list of keywords and expressions on platforms such as Google, Google Scholar, and ResearchGate. The results show that work carried out to date has mainly focused on a few well known traditional bakery products such as bread, cakes, and biscuits. There has been relatively little research on transforming plantain pulp into flour as part of the preparation of traditional African dishes such as foutou or amala. This work has often been carried out in the laboratory, without any link to local artisanal processes or knowledge of consumer preferences. There is a need to standardize local culinary practices for processing plantain into flour or semolina. The data from this review opens the door for applied research into innovative technological procedures for processing plantain to add value to local dishes adapted to new urban lifestyles, to meet local consumer needs, and to reduce post-harvest losses. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Headache disorders, including migraine, pose a significant burden globally, with varying prevalence rates across different regions. However, research on migraine in Nigeria and other low-income countries is limited. Understanding the prevalence, characteristics, and treatment outcomes of migraine in Nigeria is essential for informing healthcare policies and improving patient care. METHODS: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize existing literature on migraine prevalence, characteristics, and treatment outcomes in Nigeria. Eligible studies were identified through comprehensive searches of multiple electronic databases and grey literature sources. Studies reporting migraine prevalence, diagnostic criteria, treatment modalities, and outcomes were included. Data extraction and quality assessment were performed following established guidelines. RESULTS: Ten studies involving 7,768 participants met the inclusion criteria and were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of migraine headache in Nigeria was calculated to be 16% (95% CI = 7-28), with significant heterogeneity observed among studies (I² = 99.35%, P < 0.001). Subgroup analysis revealed a higher prevalence of migraine among women compared to men. Common triggers for migraine included physical activity, sleep deprivation, mental and physical fatigue, and emotional stress. Treatment modalities varied, with simple analgesics, NSAIDs, ergotamine derivatives, and amitriptyline being commonly used. However, many participants reported inadequate pain relief or significant side effects, highlighting the need for improved management strategies. CONCLUSION: The findings of this systematic review and meta-analysis underscore the significant burden of migraine in Nigeria and the need for improved healthcare policies and interventions. Addressing gaps in access to specialized care and implementing more effective treatment regimens could help alleviate the burden of migraine on individuals and healthcare systems in Nigeria. Further research is needed to standardize diagnostic criteria and methodologies and provide more reliable prevalence estimates.

RESUMO

Pheochromocytomas and sympathetic paragangliomas (PPGL) are rare neuroendocrine tumors originating from chromaffin tissue of the adrenal medulla and extra-adrenal sympathetic paraganglia. Historically, many of these tumors were diagnosed postmortem, earning pheochromocytomas the moniker "great mimic" due to their diverse clinical manifestations that can resemble various other conditions. Over time, the clinical presentation of PPGL has evolved, with a shift from symptomatic or postmortem diagnoses to more frequent incidental discoveries or diagnoses through screening, with postmortem identification now being rare. The development of a clinical scoring system has improved the identification of patients at increased risk for PPGL. Notably, the proportion of PPGL patients with normal blood pressure ranges from 15 % to 40 %, varying based on the clinical context. Despite the tumor's reputation, PPGL is an exceedingly rare cause of resistant hypertension. Management of a pheochromocytoma crisis has advanced, with several classes of drugs available for treatment. However, PPGL during pregnancy remains a significant concern, associated with substantial maternal and fetal mortality rates. Additionally, PPGL can present as rare disorders, including catecholamine-induced cardiomyopathy, Cushing syndrome, and urinary bladder PGL. Given these varied presentations, heightened awareness and prompt recognition of PPGL are crucial for timely diagnosis and treatment, ultimately improving patient outcomes. In this article, we offer an in-depth analysis of the diverse clinical presentations of PPGL, highlighting their complexity and the associated diagnostic and treatment strategies.

RESUMO

To address the challenges associated with prolonged traditional hot air drying (HAD) times and significant nutrient loss in cherries, this study employs ultrasound-assisted hot air drying (USA-HAD) technology. The study investigates the impacts of various ultrasound (US) frequencies, US powers, and hot air temperatures on the drying kinetics, physicochemical properties, texture attributes, and microstructure of cherries during drying. Cherry physicochemical quality serves as the evaluation criterion, with the entropy-weighted TOPSIS method used to identify the optimal drying parameters. The findings indicate that USA-HAD accelerates the drying process, reduces drying time, and enhances drying efficiency. In comparison to natural drying, USA-HAD significantly preserves polysaccharides, total phenolic content, total flavonoid content, and organic acids in cherries, while boosting antioxidant activity. Concurrently, it reduces color intensity, as well as the hardness, chewiness, and gumminess of dried cherry products. Microstructural observations under different drying methods reveal an increase in surface micropores and relatively intact tissue structure. Under conditions of 55°C, 48 W, and 28 kHz, cherries exhibit superior overall quality based on the TOPSIS relative closeness degree. This study offers practical insights for optimizing post-harvest processing of cherries. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: In this rapidly evolving era, the application of combination drying technology is clearly on the rise. The USA-HAD treated cherries had better nutritional and bioactive than HAD. The conclusions obtained indicate that the USA-HAD technology has more potential for development.

RESUMO

In this study, we have found two new species-Strophariasubrugosoannulata and Strophariamicroaeruginosa. Phylogenetic analyses, based on the internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS) and the nuclear ribosomal RNA gene (nrLSU), suggest that the two new species are distinct and monophyletic. S.subrugosoannulata is distinguished from other species of the genus Stropharia by the pileus covered with greyish-orange squamules in the centre, stipe light brown and surface covered with white triangular squamules. S.microaeruginosa differs from other species in its pileus bluish-grey when young becoming lighter towards margins, later greyish-turquoise lightens towards the edges and surface radially striate when young, lamellae adnate to subdecurrent, stipe with white squamules at the base, acanthocytes absent. The new record species from Jilin Province, Clitolyophyllumumbilicatum was also confirmed, based on morphological and molecular study. Here, we have given full descriptions of each species, colour images, illustrations and two phylogenetic trees that show the placement and relationship of the two new species and the new record are provided.

RESUMO

Frailty, a geriatric syndrome, is assessed using the frailty phenotype (FP) and frailty index (FI). While these approaches have been applied to aging mice, their effectiveness in prematurely aging mouse models such as PolgAD257A/D257A (PolgA) has not been completely explored. We demonstrated that frailty became evident in PolgA mice around 40 weeks, validated through body weight loss, reduced walking speed, decreased physical activity, and weaker grip strength. Moreover, we also identified sex differences in these mice with females exhibiting slightly more physical decline compared to males. Frailty prevalence in PolgA mice at 40 weeks parallels that observed in naturally aging mice at 27 months and aging humans at 65-70 years. These findings contribute to understanding frailty onset and sex-specific patterns in this prematurely aging mouse model, emphasizing the significance of the PolgA mouse model in investigating aging and related disorders.

RESUMO

Background: Acute spinal cord infarction (SCI) is a rare ischemic vascular lesion. It is difficult to diagnose during the acute phase because the clinical features can vary widely, and the diffusion-weighted imaging of spinal cord magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) often fails to detect any obvious abnormality. The first aim of this study was to describe the SCI patients' characteristics, evaluate the accuracy of its diagnosis tools and management, and then find the strength of the effect of spinal surgical decompression on the patient's outcome. Methods: A PubMed keyword and Boolean search using ("spinal cord infarction" OR "spinal cord ischemia" AND diagnosis OR management OR outcome) returned 221,571 results by applying filters. We added 17,400 results from Google Scholar. Fourteen studies were included in the quantitative meta-analysis of mean differences. Results: The Time to Nadir was <6 h (56.1%), 6-12 h (30.7%), 12-72 h (5.4%), and more than 72 h (7.8%). The higher proportion of Owl's eye findings in the MRI was reported at the cervical level (39.6%) and thoracic level (22.9%) P = 0.031. The T2DWI has a moderate accuracy (area under the curve = 0.835) in detecting the T2 hypersignal intensity (T2HSI) at the hyperacute time to NADIR (<6 h). The median modified Rankin Scale (mRS) at admission was 3 (2-3), and after a follow-up duration of 12 months (6-15.5), the median mRS was reported to be 1 (1-2). About 68.9% benefited from medical treatment and physiotherapy, whereas spinal surgical decompression was done in 22.8%. Seventy percent of the overall studies favor spinal surgical decompression, with the estimated average standardized mean difference between medical and surgical treatment being = 1.2083 (95% confidence interval: 1.0250-1.3917). Conclusion: The T2DWI has moderate accuracy in detecting the T2HSI at the hyperacute time (NADIR <6 h). Even though surgical decompression favored good outcomes, medical treatment with physiotherapy was mostly used for the management of SCI.
