RESUMO

The coexistence of a meningioma and an unruptured intracranial aneurysm was considered a rare phenomenon, accidentally detected by radiological assessment. The relationship between these 2 entities is complex and represents a neurosurgical challenge. We share our experience of a case involving a 36-year-old male patient with no prior medical history who consulted for chronic unilateral left periorbital headaches. The imaging diagnosis revealed 2 lesions, including a partially calcified jugo-olfactory meningioma and an anterior communicating artery aneurysm. He was successfully treated in a single surgical procedure using a left pterional craniotomy for excision of the meningioma followed by clipping of the aneurysm. The patient was discharged home on the fifth postoperative day in good clinical condition. This experience underlines the importance of preoperative imaging assessment, in order to make the right therapeutic decision and avoid unexpected intraoperative disasters.

RESUMO

The structure-function relationship of functionalized microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) composites as adsorbents remains unclear. Herein, the orange peel-derived MCC (i.e., OP-OH-H-25) was treated by different functional agents to prepare adsorbents for cadmium (Cd(II)) removal. Mercaptoacetic acid and orthophosphoric acid did not apparently impact MCC's surface site types and contents. Alternatively, they efficiently purified OP-OH-H-25 and generated OP-OH-SH and OP-OH-P samples with increased cellulose amounts. In contrast, the glycine modification produced OP-OH-NH2 with fewer sulfhydryl/carboxyl functional groups and more amide/amino sites. The pH-dependent Cd(II) removal trends by the MCC-related materials showed three successive stages with disparate sorption modes. The Cd(II) sorption kinetics processes on OP-OH-SH, OP-OH-P, and OP-OH-NH2 reached equilibrium after 0.25 h, faster than 0.5 h on OP-OH-H-25. The maximum Cd(II) sorption capacities of MCC-related adsorbents were OP-OH-P (151.81 mg/g) > OP-OH-SH (150.80 mg/g) > OP-OH-H-25 (124.90 mg/g) > > OP-OH-NH2 (55.23 mg/g). OP-OH-P exhibited the strongest Cd(II) sorption ability under the interference of mixed aquatic components. The intrinsic Cd(II) sorption mechanisms were identified as inner-sphere complexation and cation-π bond interaction. Overall, the select priority of modifying agents is orthophosphoric acid > mercaptoacetic acid > > glycine when preparing functionalized MCC adsorbents for purifying Cd(II)-polluted water systems.

RESUMO

Non-small cell lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death globally. When apparent incidental pathogenic germline variants (PGVs) are uncovered with routine next generation sequencing (NGS) of NSCLCs, germline testing (GT) is recommended to confirm that PGV. Because it is far more common that an uncovered tumor TP53 variant is related to a somatic event than an incidental PGV, however, GT for Li Fraumeni syndrome (LFS) is not recommended based solely on uncovering a NSCLC TP53 variant. Because nearly all tumor EGFR variants are also somatic in origin, GT is not recommended based solely on uncovering a tumor EGFR variant. However, there is evidence that patients with coexisting NSCLC variants in both EGFR and TP53 have significant likelihoods of having LFS. For patients with LFS, there are recommended measures for prevention and early detection of LFS-associated cancers and cascade GT of relatives for LFS. Although co-existing genetic variants in NSCLC are not currently used as a biomarker for GT to identify patients with PGVs, given the evidence reviewed here, select patients with NSCLCs that harbor this dual biomarker (i.e., co-existing TP53/EGFR variants) might reasonably be considered for GT for LFS.

RESUMO

Morphea, is a chronic inflammatory disease of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue. Research has indicated a connection between morphea and Type I Diabetes (T1D). COVID-19 can cause autoimmune diseases like scleroderma, T1D, systemic lupus erythematosus, and others. A 12-year-old girl with type 1 diabetes who was on insulin therapy was brought into the clinic for a metabolic evaluation. The patient had induration, skin hardness, and cutaneous erythema upon inspection. The onset of T1D was following a mild COVID-19 infection. Signs of morphea merged 3 months after the onset of T1D. Known as "long-term COVID," this sickness phase that follows the acute stage of COVID-19 is most likely the result of autoimmune activation. As this patient under evaluation reveals, COVID-19 has been demonstrated in the literature to cause the production of autoantibodies and to either cause or worsen autoimmune disorders in people who have a genetic susceptibility.

RESUMO

The study of the adsorption of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on microplastics (MPs) has attracted much attention as to how microplastics can act as carriers of these pollutants. Polyurethane (PU) is one of the MPs found in aquatic environments, containing different functional groups it can interact with polar and nonpolar molecules. PAH derivatives (dPAHs) present different properties and thus can be adsorbed by different interactions; thus, this study investigated the adsorption of fluorene (FLN), dibenzothiophene (DBT), dibenzofuran (DBF), and carbazole (CBZ) onto PU MP. The Langmuir, Freundlich, and BET isotherm models were examined, and the BET model best fitted. The adsorption was a nonspontaneous process, exothermic for mono- and multilayer formation for FLN, DBT, and CBZ, and endothermic for DBF monolayer formation. The adsorption monolayer was formed by van der Waals forces, H─bonding, and π─π interactions, while the formation of the multilayer can be explained by π─π and hydrophobic interactions. The pseudo-second-order model proved to be more consistent for the adsorption of dPAHs. The adsorption in artificial seawater shows no significant differences for the monolayer but favored the adsorption multilayer due to the salting-out effect. Due to the existence of several adsorption mechanisms, PU MP interacts with dPAHs in greater quantities when compared to a MP with a simpler structure.

RESUMO

The small particle size of nanoplastics allows them to migrate through soil and make them highly bioavailable, posing a potential threat to groundwater. Measures are urgently needed to reduce the migration of nanoplastics in soil. However, there is limited research available on this topic. In this study, two types of iron-modified biochar (magnetic corncob biochar (MCCBC) and magnetic walnut shell biochar (MWSBC)) were selected and their effects on the transport of polyvinyl chloride nanoplastics (PVC-NPs) in natural sandy soil columns under different ionic types and strengths were investigated. The results show that the transport of PVC-NPs in single sandy soil columns was rapid and efficient, with the estimated breakthrough rate of 85.10%. However, the presence of MCCBC and MWSBC (0.5%, w/w) significantly inhibited the transport of PVC-NPs in sandy soil columns (p < 0.05), and MCCBC had a stronger inhibitory effect on the transport of PVC-NPs than MWSBC. This can be attributed to the fact that the adsorption of PVC-NPs on adsorbents followed the order as: MCCBC > MWSBC > sandy soil. The retention of PVC-NPs by MCCBC and MWSBC is determined by ionic type and ionic strength. The presence of coexisting ions enhanced the inhibitory effect of iron-modified biochar on the transport of PVC-NPs, with the following order: Ca2+ > SO2- 4 > Cl- > NO- 3. The inhibitory effect of MCCBC and MWSBC on the transport of PVC-NPs in soil columns increased with increasing ionic strengths. Furthermore, MCCBC and MWSBC inhibited the migration of PVC-NPs in a rainwater-soil system. The mechanisms by which MCCBC and MWSBC affect the transport of PVC-NPs in soil columns were considered to enhancing adsorption and decreasing soil pore volume. The results provide new insights into the management of soil nanoplastic pollution.

RESUMO

This study aimed to isolate bacteria that coexist with the edible mushroom Grifola frondosa when it is cultured on wood, and to determine their interactions; in turn, the aim was to find bacteria that stimulate mycelial growth so as to decrease the time required for spawn preparation on potato dextrose agar (PDA). Some Pseudomonas, Dyella, Bacillus, and Priestia spp. isolated from the cultivation surroundings of G. frondosa had a positive effect on mycelial growth of the fungus in PDA. However, some isolated bacteria had a severe negative effect on the mycelial growth, especially Burkholderia spp. Thus, both mycelial-promoting bacteria and potentially pathogenic bacteria coexist with G. frondosa in cultivation. Enzyme activity assays indicated that some wood-degrading bacteria inhabit the cultivation surroundings of G. frondosa, and these bacteria probably help the fungus to degrade wood (especially cellulose).

RESUMO

Sulphidation of nZVI (S-nZVI) has shown to significantly improve the arsenic removal capacity of nZVI, concurrently modifying the sequestration mechanism. However, to better apply S-nZVI for groundwater arsenic remediation, the impact of groundwater coexisting ions on the efficacy of arsenic uptake by S-nZVI needs to be investigated. This present study evaluates the potential of S-nZVI to remove arsenic in the presence of typical groundwater coexisting ions such as Cl-, HA, HCO3-, PO43- and SO42- through batch adsorption experiments. Individually, PO43- and HA had a dominant inhibition effect, while SO42- promoted As(III) removal by S-nZVI. Conversely, for As(V) removal, HCO3- and SO42- impeded the removal process. X-ray spectroscopic investigation suggests that the coexisting ions can either compete with arsenic for the adsorption sites, influence the S-nZVI corrosion rates and/or generate distinct corrosion products, thereby interfering with arsenic removal by S-nZVI. To investigate the cumulative effects of these ions, a 25-1 Fractional Factorial Design of experiments was employed, wherein the concentration of all the ions were varied simultaneously in an optimized manner, and their impact on arsenic removal by S-nZVI was observed. Our results shows that when these ions are present concurrently, PO43-, SO42- and HA still exerted a dominant influence on As(III) removal, whereas HCO3- was the main ions affecting As(V) removal, although the combined influence of the ions was not merely a summation of their individual effects. Overall, the finding of our study might provide valuable insight for predicting the actual performance of S-nZVI in field-scale applications for the remediation of arsenic-contaminated groundwater.

RESUMO

The objective of this research was to develop and assess chitosan-grafted copolymer/HZSM5 zeolite Schiff base nanofibers for Cu2+ and Zn2+ adsorption from aqueous media. Nanofibers were prepared via electrospinning and characterized using XRD, FTIR, 1H NMR, FESEM, TGA, BET, and XPS. The study evaluated the effect of unmodified HZSM5 and Schiff base functionalization on adsorption capacities. Incorporating 10.0 wt% zeolite Schiff base as the optimum content into the chitosan-grafted copolymer significantly enhanced adsorption, achieving increases of 98.2 % for Zn2+ and 42.2 % for Cu2+. Specifically, Zn2+ adsorption increased from 27.6 to 54.7 mg/g, and Cu2+ from 67.1 to 95.4 mg/g. Factors such as temperature, pH, adsorption time, and initial cation concentration were analyzed. Kinetic studies revealed a double-exponential model, and isotherm analysis indicated a good fit with the Redlich-Peterson model, showing maximum monolayer capacities of 310.1 mg/g for Cu2+ and 97.8 mg/g for Zn2+ (pH 6.0, 240 min, 45 °C). The adsorption thermodynamics indicated a spontaneous and endothermic adsorption. Reusability tests showed minimal capacity loss (4.91 % for Cu2+ and 5.59 % for Zn2+) after five cycles. The nanofiber displayed greater selectivity for Cu2+ over Zn2+ in multi-ion systems and real electroplating wastewater, highlighting its potential for targeted heavy metal removal.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Identifying the effects of comorbidity on healthcare utilization is critical for understanding the benefits of improved comorbidity management. Asthma is a common respiratory condition, associated with gastrointestinal, metabolic, psychiatric, and other respiratory conditions. Adults with asthma represent a key population in understanding comorbidity and its consequences. The objective was to explore the relationship between comorbidity and overnight hospitalizations in U.S. adults with asthma. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: A cross-sectional sample of 3,887 subjects aged 20-79 was aggregated from seven cycles (2005-2018) of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The survey design was created using the full seven cycles, then a subpopulation was used for the analysis. Design-based modified Poisson regression with robust standard errors compared the prevalence of overnight hospitalizations in subjects with and without comorbidities. Comorbidity was defined as the presence of one or more additional chronic conditions. RESULTS: Over half (61.6%) of patients with asthma reported having comorbidities. The overnight hospitalization prevalence was higher in those with comorbidities (21.6%) than those without (7.4%). The adjusted prevalence ratio of overnight hospitalizations in those with comorbidities vs. those without was 2.02 (95% CI: 1.54-2.66). Conclusions from sensitivity analyses remained the same. CONCLUSIONS: Comorbidity in U.S. adult asthma patients is associated with increased overnight hospitalizations. Study results concur with examinations of other healthcare utilization outcomes, revealing how comorbidity influences healthcare utilization patterns in patients with asthma. The reduction of overnight hospitalizations should be a targeted goal when developing and evaluating interventions to manage comorbidities in patients with asthma.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Concurrent non-serous endometrial and ovarian tumours are often managed clinically as two separate primary tumours, but almost all exhibit evidence of a genomic relationship. METHODOLOGY: This study investigates the extent of relatedness using whole exome sequencing, which was performed on paired non-serous endometrial and ovarian carcinomas from 27 patients with concurrent tumours in a cohort with detailed clinicopathological annotation. Four whole exome sequencing-derived parameters (mutation, mutational burden, mutational signatures and mutant allele tumour heterogeneity scores) were used to develop a novel unsupervised model for the assessment of genomic similarity to infer genomic relatedness of paired tumours. RESULTS: This novel model demonstrated genomic relatedness across all four parameters in all tumour pairs. Mutations in PTEN, ARID1A, CTNNB1, KMT2D and PIK3CA occurred most frequently and 24 of 27 (89 %) tumour pairs shared identical mutations in at least one of these genes, with all pairs sharing mutations in a number of other genes. Ovarian endometriosis, CTNNB1 exon 3 mutation, and progression and death from disease were present across the similarity ranking. Mismatch repair deficiency was associated with less genomically similar pairs. DISCUSSION: Although there was diversity across the cohort, the presence of genomic similarity in all paired tumours supports the hypothesis that concurrent non-serous endometrial and ovarian carcinomas are genomically related and may have arisen from a common origin.

RESUMO

Collaborative treatment of pollutants is a promising approach for wastewater treatment. In this work, a covalent organic framework material (COFs) with an imine structure was synthesised by the Schiff base reaction, and photochemical tests showed good photochemical effects. It was used to explore the photocatalytic treatment of co-existing pollutants (heavy metal ions and antibiotics) and the performance of treating co-existing wastewater was investigated. The degradation performance of levofloxacin (LVX) and Cr(VI) was improved in the coexisting pollutants system, with the LVX degradation being 4.2 times more effective than that of the LVX solitary system. Moreover, this phenomenon was also observed in LVX/Ag(I), LVX/Fe(III), sulfadiazine/Cr(VI), norfloxacin/Cr(VI) and tetracycline/Cr(VI) systems. The analysis of active species suggesting that the synergistic promotion of photocatalytic oxidation-reduction systems was not only promoting from the improvement of simple charge separation, but it was also found that high-valent metal species can act directly in the oxidative decomposition of antibiotics. The interaction of pollutants and intermediates were rationally exploited and confirmed by control experiments and theoretical calculation. This conclusion helps us to re-examine the underlying mechanisms of photocatalytic synchronous oxidation and reduction reactions, simultaneously beneficial for the development of mixed pollutant control processes.

RESUMO

The biogeochemical cycle of biogenic manganese oxides (BioMnOx) is closely associated with the environmental behavior and fate of various pollutants. It is significantly interfered by many metals, such as Cu and Fe. However, the bacterial molecular responses are not clear. Here, the effects of Cu(II) and Fe(III) on oxidation of manganese by Pseudomonas putida MnB1 and the bacterial molecular response mechanisms have been studied. The bacterial oxidation of manganese were promoted by both Fe(III) and Cu(II) and the final manganese oxidation rate of the Cu(II) group exceeded 16 % that of the Fe(III) group. The results of transcriptome indicated that Cu(II) promoted manganese oxidation by up-regulating the expression levels of multicopper oxidase (MCO) and peroxidase(POD), and by stimulating electron transfer, while Fe(III) promoted this process by accelerating the electron transfer and nitrogen cycling, and activating POD. The protein-protein interaction (PPI) network indicated that the MCO genes (mnxG and mcoA) were directly linked to the copper homeostasis proteins (cusA, cusB, czcC and cusF). Cytochrome c was closely related to the genes related to nitrogen cycling (glnA, glnL, and putA) and electrons transfer (cycO, cycD, nuoA, nuoK, and nuoL), which also promoted manganese oxidation. This study provides a molecular level insight into the oxidation of Mn(II) by Pseudomonas putida MnB1 with Cu(II) and/or Fe(III) ions.

RESUMO

Background/Objectives: Heart failure (HF) is usually accompanied by other comorbidities, which, altogether, have a major impact on patients and healthcare systems. Our aim was to analyse the demographic and clinical characteristics of incident HF patients and the effect of comorbidities on one-year health outcomes. Methods: This was an observational, retrospective, population-based study of incident HF patients between 2014 and 2018 in the EpiChron Cohort, Spain. The included population contained all primary and hospital care patients with a diagnosis of HF. All chronic diseases in their electronic health records were pooled into three comorbidity clusters (cardiovascular, mental, other physical). These comorbidity groups and the health outcomes were analysed until 31 December 2018. A descriptive analysis was performed. Cox regression models and survival curves were calculated to determine the hazard risk (HR) of all-cause mortality, all-cause and HF-related hospital admissions, hospital readmissions, and emergency room visits for each comorbidity group. Results: In total, 13,062 incident HF patients were identified (mean age = 82.0 years; 54.8% women; 93.7% multimorbid; mean of 4.52 ± 2.06 chronic diseases). After one-year follow-up, there were 3316 deaths (25.3%) and 4630 all-cause hospitalisations (35.4%). After adjusting by gender, age, and inpatient/outpatient status, the mental cluster was associated (HR; 95% confidence interval) with a higher HR of death (1.08; 1.01-1.16) and all-cause hospitalisation (1.09; 1.02-1.16). Conclusions: Cardiovascular comorbidities are the most common and studied ones in HF patients; however, they are not the most strongly associated with negative impacts on health outcomes in these patients. Our findings suggest the importance of a holistic and integral approach in the care of HF patients and the need to take into account the entire spectrum of comorbidities for improving HF management in clinical practice.

RESUMO

Membrane proteins (MPs) often show preference for one phase over the other, which is characterized by the partition coefficient, Kp. The physical mechanisms underlying Kp have been only inferred indirectly from experiments due to the unavailability of detailed structures and compositions of ordered phases. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations can complement these details and thus, in principle, provide further insights into the partitioning of MPs between two phases. However, the application of MD has remained difficult due to long time scales required for equilibration and large system size for the phase stability, which have not been fully resolved even in free energy simulations. This chapter describes the recently developed binary bilayer simulation method, where the membrane is composed of two laterally attached membrane patches. The binary bilayer system (BBS) is designed to preserve the lateral packing of both phases in a significantly smaller size compared to that required for macroscopic phase separation. These characteristics are advantageous in partitioning simulations, as the length scale for diffusion across the system can be significantly smaller. Hence the BBS can be efficiently employed in both conventional MD and free energy simulations, though sampling in ordered phases remains difficult due to slow diffusion. Development of efficient lipid swapping methods and its combination with the BBS would be a useful approach for partitioning in coexisting phases.

RESUMO

Mycoheterotrophic plants (MHPs) rely on their mycorrhizal fungus for carbon and nutrient supply, thus a shift in mycobionts may play a crucial role in speciation. This study aims to explore the mycorrhizal diversity of two closely related and sympatric fully MHPs, Monotropastrum humile var. humile (Mhh) and M. humile var. glaberrimum (Mhg), and determine their mycorrhizal associations. A total of 1,108,710 and 1,119,071 ectomycorrhizal fungal reads were obtained from 31 Mhh and 31 Mhg, and these were finally assigned to 227 and 202 operational taxonomic units, respectively. Results show that sympatric Mhh and Mhg are predominantly associated with different fungal genera in Russulaceae. Mhh is consistently associated with members of Russula, whereas Mhg is associated with members of Lactarius. Associating with different mycobionts and limited sharing of fungal partners might reduce the competition and contribute to their coexistence. The ectomycorrhizal fungal communities are significantly different among the five forests in both Mhh and Mhg. The distinct mycorrhizal specificity between Mhh and Mhg suggests the possibility of different mycobionts triggered ecological speciation between sympatric species.

RESUMO

Memristors are of great theoretical and practical significance for chaotic dynamics research of brain-like neural networks due to their excellent physical properties such as brain synapse-like memorability and nonlinearity, especially crucial for the promotion of AI big models, cloud computing, and intelligent systems in the artificial intelligence field. In this paper, we introduce memristors as self-connecting synapses into a four-dimensional Hopfield neural network, constructing a central cyclic memristive neural network (CCMNN), and achieving its effective control. The model adopts a central loop topology and exhibits a variety of complex dynamic behaviors such as chaos, bifurcation, and homogeneous and heterogeneous coexisting attractors. The complex dynamic behaviors of the CCMNN are investigated in depth numerically by equilibrium point stability analysis as well as phase trajectory maps, bifurcation maps, time-domain maps, and LEs. It is found that with the variation of the internal parameters of the memristor, asymmetric heterogeneous attractor coexistence phenomena appear under different initial conditions, including the multi-stable coexistence behaviors of periodic-periodic, periodic-stable point, periodic-chaotic, and stable point-chaotic. In addition, by adjusting the structural parameters, a wide range of amplitude control can be realized without changing the chaotic state of the system. Finally, based on the CCMNN model, an adaptive synchronization controller is designed to achieve finite-time synchronization control, and its application prospect in simple secure communication is discussed. A microcontroller-based hardware circuit and NIST test are conducted to verify the correctness of the numerical results and theoretical analysis.

RESUMO

Herein, the study introduces a novel bifunctional In2S3/MgTiO3/TiO2@N-CNT (IMTNC) nanocomposite, which is poised to revolutionize the detection and removal of clothianidin (CLD) from aquatic environments by synergistic adsorption and photodegradation. Confirmation of the material's synthesis was done using structural, optical, morphological, and chemical characterizations. An outstanding sensitivity of 2.168 µA/nM.cm2 with a linear range of 4-100 nM and a LOD of 0.04 nM, along with an exceptional elimination efficiency of 98.06 ± 0.84% for about 10 ppm CLD within 18 min was demonstrated by the IMTNC nanocomposite. Extensive studies were carried out to appraise the material's effectiveness in the presence of various interfering species, such as cations, anions, organic compounds, and different water matrices, and a comprehensive assessment of its stability throughout several cycles was made. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) study was used to determine the ideal removal conditions for improved performance. In addition, the catalytic performance in removing various other pollutants was also analyzed. Adding In2S3 and developing N-doped Carbon Nanotubes (N-CNT) increased conductivity and higher electrochemical sensing skills, improving charge transfer and increasing photocatalytic activity. This research underscores the potential of the IMTNC nanocomposite as a promising candidate for advanced environmental sensing and remediation applications.

RESUMO

Different types of pathogenic viruses that have common transmission path can be co-infected, inducing distinct disease procession in comparison to that infection of one. Also, in the post COVID-19 time, more types of respiratory infectious virus are becoming prevalent and are concurrent. Those bring an urgent need for detection of co-existing viruses. Here, we propose a visualized lateral flow assay for logic determination of co-existing viral RNA fragments. In the presence of specific viral RNA inputs, DNAzyme is de-blocked according to defined logic, and catalyzes the hydrolysis of hairpin-structural substrate. One of cleaved substrates contains DNAzyme domain to realize dual signal amplification, which obtains copious of the other cleaved substrates. The cleaved substrates act as linking strands for bridging DNA-modified gold nanoparticles onto lateral flow strip to induce coloration on test line. "AND", "OR" and "INHIBIT" controlled lateral flow assays are respectively demonstrated for co-existing viral RNA detection, and the visual results can be obtained by the same kind of prepared strip, without need of re-fabricating strips according to logic systems. The work provides a flexible, convenient, visual and logic-processing strategy for simultaneous analysis of co-existing viruses.

RESUMO

Background: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) or percutaneous transhepatic biliary balloon dilatation (PTBD) is a challenge in resolving biliary-enteric anastomotic occlusive strictures (BEAOS) and/or coexisting stones. The biliary-enteric anastomosis (BEA) often cannot be seen because of the surgically altered gastrointestinal anatomy. Here, a technique that combined percutaneous compliant-occluded distal cholangiography and the maintenance of a large-bore catheter is described to resolve this issue. Methods: A retrospective review of 10 patients who presented with BEAOS with/without coexisting stones who were treated with percutaneous compliant balloon-occluded distal cholangiography, bile duct stone removal, and the maintenance of a large-bore catheter between February 2017 and January 2021 was performed. Treatment response, laboratory examinations, including hepatic function tests, routine blood tests, and blood electrolytes, complications, and imaging data were evaluated. Paired t-tests were used to investigate the difference of laboratory examinations before and after the procedure. Results: All 10 cases were technically successful. A total of 9 stones in 6 patients were successfully removed by the compliant balloon. All catheters were removed after the patency of the stricture was confirmed by percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTHC) 6 months later. No severe adverse events occurred during the perioperative period. There were 2 patients who experienced episodes of cholangitis during the follow-up period (mean, 17 months; range, 4-24 months), and neither BEAOS nor bile duct stones recurred within 2 years after the procedure. White blood cells (WBC), total bilirubin (TB), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) were (6.0±1.4)×109/L and (6.0±1.6)×109/L (P=0.91), 31.4±15.7 and 29.6±10.3 µmol/L (P=0.74), 50.8±20.0 and 85.8±67.0 U/L (P=0.16), and 42.6±15.2 and 71.8±44.9 U/L (P=0.09) pre and postintervention, respectively. Conclusions: Percutaneous transhepatic compliant balloon-occluded distal cholangiography and the maintenance of a large-bore catheter probably provide an effective and safe alternative method for resolving BEAOS and/or coexisting stones.
