The common Buzzard (Buteo buteo) was previously shown to transmit two Sarcocystis species (S. glareoli and S. microti) forming cysts in the brains of rodents. Due to a lack of research, the richness of Sarcocystis species spread by these birds of prey is expected to be much higher. A total of 30 samples of the small intestine of the Common Buzzard were collected in Lithuania and subjected to Sarcocystis species identification based on nested PCR of 28S rRNA and ITS1, following the sequencing of amplified DNA fragments. Six known Sarcocystis spp., S. cornixi, S. glareoli, S. halieti, S. kutkienae, S. turdusi, and S. wobeseri, along with three genetically distinct species (Sarcocystis sp. Rod3, Sarcocystis sp. Rod4, and Sarcocystis sp. Rod5), were identified. Phylogenetically, these three potentially new species clustered with Sarcocystis spp. characterised by a rodents-birds life cycle. Sarcocystis spp. employing rodents and birds as their intermediate hosts were detected in 66.7% and 50.0% of samples, respectively. These findings are consistent with the diet preferences of Common Buzzards. Notably, co-infections with two or more species were observed in a half of the samples. Altogether, the obtained results indicate that the Common Buzzard could serve as definitive host of various Sarcocystis species.

BACKGROUND: Exploring the dynamics of gut microbiome colonisation during early-life stages is important for understanding the potential impact of microbes on host development and fitness. Evidence from model organisms suggests a crucial early-life phase when shifts in gut microbiota can lead to immune dysregulation and reduced host condition. However, our understanding of gut microbiota colonisation in long-lived vertebrates, especially during early development, remains limited. We therefore used a wild population of common buzzard nestlings (Buteo buteo) to investigate connections between the early-life gut microbiota colonisation, environmental and host factors. RESULTS: We targeted both bacterial and eukaryotic microbiota using the 16S and 28S rRNA genes. We sampled the individuals during early developmental stages in a longitudinal design. Our data revealed that age significantly affected microbial diversity and composition. Nest environment was a notable predictor of microbiota composition, with particularly eukaryotic communities differing between habitats occupied by the hosts. Nestling condition and infection with the blood parasite Leucocytozoon predicted microbial community composition. CONCLUSION: Our findings emphasise the importance of studying microbiome dynamics to capture changes occurring during ontogeny. They highlight the role of microbial communities in reflecting host health and the importance of the nest environment for the developing nestling microbiome. Overall, this study contributes to understanding the complex interplay between microbial communities, host factors, and environmental variables, and sheds light on the ecological processes governing gut microbial colonisation during early-life stages.

This study aimed to document the pathological findings observed in a common buzzard (Buteo buteo insularum) from Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Atlantic Ocean), naturally infected with Buteo buteo herpesvirus (HV). Local authorities found the common buzzard alive, but it died after 10 days of specialized veterinary care. Postmortem investigation, including complete gross and histologic examination, immunohistochemistry, microbiology, and PCR, was performed. The animal presented necrotizing heterophilic and histiocytic bilateral conjunctivitis, stomatitis, pharyngitis, rhinitis, and sinusitis with secondary bacterial and fungal infections. Frequent eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies were observed in the oral mucosa and esophagus epithelium. HV proteins and DNA were detected in tissues from this animal. The sequences obtained from the PCR product were identical to the reported sequences of Buteo buteo HV.

The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of detomidine and medetomidine alone or in combination with ketamine on Schirmer tear test I (STT I) results and intraocular pressures (IOPs) in the common buzzard (Buteo buteo). Fourteen ophthalmologically healthy common buzzards were randomly assigned to 1 of 2 α-2 adrenoreceptor agonist groups: a detomidine group (group 1) and a medetomidine group (group 2). The detomidine group had 2 subgroups, detomidine alone or in combination with ketamine. Similarly, the medetomidine group had 2 subgroups, medetomidine alone or in combination with ketamine. Five minutes after α-2 adrenoreceptor agonist administration, the first measurements of STT I and IOP were collected. Ketamine was injected intramuscularly immediately after the first measurements were recorded. Schirmer tear test I and IOP measurements were repeated 5 minutes after ketamine administration. Measurements were obtained for 3 subgroups per agonist grouping: baseline 1, detomidine alone and detomidine with ketamine for group 1, and baseline 2, medetomidine alone and medetomidine with ketamine for group 2. Both IOP and STT I decreased significantly after sedation, anesthesia, or both. Intraocular pressure was significantly lower in the detomidine-ketamine group compared with the detomidine alone group. The IOP and STT I significantly decreased in both the medetomidine alone and medetomidine-ketamine groups when compared with those for all 14 unanesthetized animals before administering the α-2 adrenoreceptor agonist and ketamine. When α-2 adrenoreceptor agonists were considered as a single group (groups 1 and 2 combined), IOP also showed a significant decrease in the α-2 adrenoreceptor agonist-ketamine groups compared with the α-2 adrenoreceptor agonists alone, but STT I did not. According to the results obtained from these common buzzards, no statistical differences were found between the detomidine and medetomidine (alone) groups or detomidine-ketamine and medetomidine-ketamine groups in terms of STT I and IOP.

A free ranging, fledged common buzzard (Buteo buteo) was found with severe feather damage and left periorbital swelling. Clinical examination revealed a 3.0 × 2.5 × 1.5 cm left medial subconjunctival mass. The abnormal tissue extended over most of the left cornea, severely impairing the bird's vision in that eye. Additionally, the left globe was displaced in a temporal direction. Computed tomography revealed the origin of the mass to be retrobulbar tissue. An ultrasound examination of the mass found cystic areas, and a sanguineous fluid was aspirated. Cytological examination of the aspirated fluid revealed numerous erythrocytes and a few round cells with oval nuclei, single large nucleoli, and abundant foamy cytoplasm. After a poor prognosis for rehabilitation to the wild, the bird was humanely euthanatized. A postmortem examination of the bird confirmed the retrobulbar mass with extension around the bulbus. Histological examination of the mass was consistent with an invasive adenocarcinoma, likely arising from the lacrimal glands. Neoplasia in the orbit has occasionally been described in Psittaciformes, but only rarely in birds of prey such as Accipitriformes.

RESUMO

Toxocara cati is a common parasite of wild and domestic felines, and presents a cosmopolitan distribution. Adult parasites localize in the gut of the definitive host giving rise to the infection, which usually runs asymptomatic. These worms produce eggs that are excreted with feces into the environment, where they become a source of infection for paratenic hosts, such as mammals, birds, and invertebrates. In this brief communication, we report the detection of T. cati larvae in a common buzzard (Buteo buteo) and a red kite (Milvus milvus), in the Basilicata Region of Italy. This result may be important to define new pathways of spread and survival of T. cati in the wild.

The dataset presented in this article supports "Intensive livestock farming as a major determinant of the exposure to anticoagulant rodenticides in raptors of the Canary Islands (Spain)" (Rial-Berriel et al., 2020). A Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis on the influence of the influence of livestock activity on exposure to anticoagulant rodenticides in raptors in the Canary Islands was performed. This dataset provides geographic information on the localization of each raptor (either positive or negative for anticoagulant rodenticides, n = 308), as well as the concentrations of each compound found in their livers. In addition, we present complementary analyses to those included in the main article, such as the detailed analysis of the farming activity influence on anticoagulant rodenticide exposure of raptors, by island and by raptor species.

The Canary Islands (Spain) is a biodiversity hotspot, with more than 4500 registered endemic species. However, it is subject to high anthropogenic pressure that threatens its wildlife in various ways. In the context of forensic toxicological surveys, the presence of anticoagulant rodenticides (AR) has been investigated in the liver of 831 animal carcasses with georeferenced data from 2011 to May 2020. The high concentrations of toxic pesticides in carcasses and in baits found close to the corpses indicated that all the reptiles and most of the mammals tested positive for AR were intentionally poisoned, although mainly by other substances. The frequency of detection of AR in non-raptor birds (n = 343) was only 4.1%, being the Canary raven the most frequently affected species (7/97, 7.2%). On the contrary, in raptors (n = 308) the detection frequency was almost 60%, with an average of more than 2 ARs per animal. The highest concentrations were found in the common kestrel. We present for the first-time results of AR contamination in two species of raptors that are very rare in Europe, Eleonora's falcon (n = 4) and Barbary falcon (n = 13). The temporal trend of positive cases remains stable, but since the entry into force of the restriction to the concentration of the active ingredient in baits (<30 ppm), a decrease in the concentrations of these compounds in the raptors' liver has been detected. Conversely, we registered an increase in the number of ARs per animal. From the study of the geographic information system (GIS) it can be deduced that intensive livestock farms are an important determinant in the exposure of raptors to ARs. Those birds that have their territory near intensive production farms have higher levels of exposure than those of birds that live far from such facilities.

A deeper understanding of the processes underlying the distribution of animals in space is crucial for both basic and applied ecology. The Common buzzard (Buteo buteo) is a highly aggressive, territorial bird of prey that interacts strongly with its intra- and interspecific competitors. We propose and use random matrix theory to quantify the strength and range of repulsion as a function of the buzzard population density, thus providing a novel approach to model density dependence. As an indicator of territorial behaviour, we perform a large-scale analysis of the distribution of buzzard nests in an area of 300 square kilometres around the Teutoburger Wald, Germany, as gathered over a period of 20 years. The nearest and next-to-nearest neighbour spacing distribution between nests is compared to the two-dimensional Poisson distribution, originating from uncorrelated random variables, to the complex eigenvalues of random matrices, which are strongly correlated, and to a two-dimensional Coulomb gas interpolating between these two. A one-parameter fit to a time-moving average reveals a significant increase of repulsion between neighbouring nests, as a function of the observed increase in absolute population density over the monitored period of time, thereby proving an unexpected yet simple model for density-dependent spacing of predator territories. A similar effect is obtained for next-to-nearest neighbours, albeit with weaker repulsion, indicating a short-range interaction. Our results show that random matrix theory might be useful in the context of population ecology.

The aim of this study was to compare the effects of isoflurane (ISO) and sevoflurane (SEVO) inhalation anesthesia on the cardiovascular system of the common buzzard (Buteo buteo). Fourteen common buzzards of unknown sex and age, weighing 700-900 g each, were used for the study. The buzzards were randomly divided into an ISO group and a SEVO group, each comprising 7 buzzards. The buzzards were then anesthetized by masked induction with either ISO or SEVO. After induction, all buzzards were intubated with a 2.5-mm-diameter uncuffed endotracheal tube. Anesthesia was maintained with 3% ISO or 4% SEVO in a 3 L/min flow of 100% oxygen. Before induction, immediately after induction, and at intervals of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 min after the patients were induced, the heart rate, respiratory rate, and body temperature of the buzzards were recorded. In addition, before and during anesthesia, serum electrolytes (sodium, ionized calcium, and potassium), blood gas measurements (arterial pH, arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide, arterial partial pressure of oxygen, bicarbonate concentration, and oxyhemoglobin saturation), and hematocrit values were evaluated in the blood samples taken from both the ISO and SEVO groups. A statistically significant decrease in body temperature was observed in both groups. A significant decrease in heart rate was observed in the ISO group. The increases in partial pressure of carbon dioxide and bicarbonate concentration were statistically significant in both groups. The effects of ISO and SEVO anesthesia on the cardiovascular and respiratory system in the buzzards were similar based on the results of this study.

Poxvirus infections have been reported in domestic, captive, and wild avian hosts including many raptor species. A wild Common Buzzard ( Buteo buteo) admitted to a wildlife veterinary clinic in Sardinia, Italy, showed multiple, wart-like proliferative cutaneous lesions on both legs. Histologically, there was ballooning degeneration and large intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies consistent with avipoxvirus (APV) infection. Diagnosis was confirmed by PCR detecting APV genes: P4b (locus fpv167), P35 (locus fpv140), and partial DNA polymerase. Phylogenetic analyses were performed to compare the detected virus with a panel of selected APVs. Analyses of P4b and DNA polymerase assigned the virus to clade A (fowlpox virus), subclade A7, grouping with many other APVs previously isolated in birds of prey. Further research should highlight the diversity of avian pox viral strains circulating among Common Buzzards as well as the phylogenetic role of locus fpv140 (P35) in comparison with the more-conserved P4b and DNA polymerase genes.

Balancing selection is a major mechanism to maintain colour polymorphisms over evolutionary time. In common buzzards, variation in plumage colour was reportedly maintained by a heterozygote advantage: heterozygote intermediates had higher fitness than homozygote light and dark morphs. Here, we challenge one of the basic premises of the heterozygote advantage hypothesis, by testing whether plumage colour variation in common buzzards follows a one-locus two-allele inheritance model. Using a long-term population study with 202 families, we show that colour variation in buzzards is highly heritable. However, we find no support for a simple Mendelian one-locus two-allele model of inheritance. Our results rather suggest that buzzard plumage colour should be considered a quantitative polygenic trait. As a consequence, it is unlikely that the proposed heterozygote advantage is the mechanism that maintains this genetic variation. We hypothesize that plumage colour effects on fitness might depend on the environment, but this remains to be tested.

In this study, our aim was to determine the common sources of origin of 18 elements in the livers of Common Buzzards collected during the breeding season in an extensive agricultural landscape in south-east Poland with respect to age (adults and immatures) and sex (males and females). In all 34 specimens collected, the element concentrations followed the pattern of S > Na > Fe > Mg > Zn > Si > Cu > Mn > Ba > Se > B > Pb > Hg > Cd > Cr > Ni > Sr > V. Among the heavy metals examined, only the concentration of Pb was relatively high. Given the prevalence of farmland in the studied area (and the wide use of fertilizers), common use of lead-hunting ammunition and moderate concentration of Pb in fertilizers, the indirect influence of hunting ammunition ingested with food or as gastroliths was apparently responsible for the elevated levels of Pb in the livers of Common Buzzards. In our study, no significant sex-related differences were detected in the hepatic concentrations of any element. However, a significant age effect was observed for three elements, which had elevated levels in adults (Hg) and immature birds (B, Pb), and a significant age x sex interaction was found for S and Fe. These results might be explained by the importance of these elements in bone growth in immature birds (B), variable strategies of foraging between adults and immature birds (Pb), and possible intersex differences in the immature cohort in response to the presence of lead (S, Fe).

Cadmium and lead are persistent and ubiquitous metals that can cause several deleterious effects in living beings. Apoptosis and necrosis are two types of cell death that can be found after in vivo and in vitro exposure to these metals. In this study, isolated red blood cells from living captive Common buzzard (Buteo buteo) were exposed in vitro to different concentrations of lead, cadmium, and the mixture lead-cadmium in a proportion of 1:10 (similar to that found in previous field studies). Data obtained from dose-response curves were used to evaluate the interactive effects of metal mixtures on cell viability. In general, except for the exposure to NOEC, additivity was the most frequently observed response. As described in human, after in vitro exposure, lead was highly accumulated in buzzard erythrocytes, while cadmium accumulation was scarce. Finally, the type of cell death (apoptosis or necrosis) induced by the exposure to different concentrations of these heavy metals and their mixtures was evaluated in the red blood cells. Apoptosis was found to be the main type of cell death observed after cadmium and/or lead exposure. However, this exposure caused an increase in lysis or necrosis, especially if red blood cells were exposed to high doses.
