RESUMO

Whether earthworm mucus affects Cd transport behavior in soil-plant systems remains uncertain. Consequently, this study thoroughly assessed the impacts of earthworm mucus on plant growth and physiological responses, plant Cd accumulation, translocation, and distribution, as well as soil characteristics and Cd fractionation in a soil-plant (tomato seedling) system. Results demonstrated that the earthworm inoculation considerably enhanced plant Cd uptake and decreased plant Cd translocation, the effects of which were appreciably less significant than those of the earthworm mucus. This suggested that earthworm mucus may play a crucial role in the way earthworms influence plant Cd uptake and translocation. Moreover, the artificial mucus, which contained identical inorganic nitrogen contents to those in earthworm mucus, had no significant effect on plant Cd accumulation or translocation, implying that components other than inorganic nitrogen in the earthworm mucus may have contributed significantly to the overall effects of the mucus. Compared with the control, the earthworm mucus most substantially increased the root Cd content, the Cd accumulation amount of root and whole plant, and root Cd BCF by 93.7 %, 221.3 %, 72.2 %, and 93.7 %, respectively, while notably reducing the Cd TF by 48.2 %, which may be ascribed to the earthworm mucus's significant impacts on tomato seedling growth and physiological indicators, its considerable influences on the subcellular components and chemical species of root Cd, and its substantial effects on the soil characteristics and soil Cd fractionation, as revealed by correlation analysis. Redundancy analysis further suggested that the most prominent impacts of earthworm mucus may have been due to its considerable reduction of soil pH, improvement of soil DOC content, and enhancement of the exchangeable Cd fraction in soil. This work may help better understand how earthworm mucus influences the transport behavior of metals in soil-plant systems.

RESUMO

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) affects cervids in North America, Asia, and Scandinavia. CWD is unique in its efficient spread, partially because of contact with infectious prions shed in secreta. To assess temporal profiles of CWD prion shedding, we collected saliva, urine, and feces from white-tailed deer for 66 months after exposure to low oral doses of CWD-positive brain tissue or saliva. We analyzed prion seeding activity by using modified amyloid amplification assays incorporating iron oxide bead extraction, which improved CWD detection and reduced false positives. CWD prions were detected in feces, urine, and saliva as early as 6 months postinfection. More frequent and consistent shedding was observed in deer homozygous for glycine at prion protein gene codon 96 than in deer expressing alternate genotypes. Our findings demonstrate that improved amplification methods can be used to identify early antemortem CWD prion shedding, which might aid in disease surveillance of cervids.

RESUMO

The accumulation and unsustainable management of plastic waste generate environmental pollution that affects ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. We studied the possibility of using the consumption and digestion of oxo-biodegradable, compostable plastics and polypropylene from face masks by the fifth-instar larvae of G. mellonella as a strategy for the sustainable management of plastic waste. We used Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR) to determine the percentage of consumption and presence of microplastics in the digestive tract and excreta for 10 treatments evaluated for 135 h. The effects of plastics on the continuity of the life cycle of the greater hive moth were also determined. We established that the larvae fragmented and consumed 35.2 ± 23% of the plastics evaluated, with significant differences between treatments. Larvae were able to consume more of the intermediate layers of masks (86.31%) than the other plastics. However, none of the plastics were digested. Instead, microplastics accumulated in the excreta, resulting in nutritional deficits that affected the continuity of the life cycle, including the induction of the early formation of pupae after 24 h and a reduction in the number of eggs laid by the females.

RESUMO

Low-income tropical regions, such as Haiti, grapple with environmental issues stemming from inadequate sanitation infrastructure for fecal sludge management. This study scrutinizes on-site sanitation systems in these regions, evaluating their environmental impacts and pinpointing improvement opportunities. The focus is specifically on systems integrating excreta valorization through composting and/or anaerobic digestion. Each system encompasses toilet access, evacuation, and sludge treatment. A comparative life cycle assessment was undertaken, with the functional unit managing one ton of excreta in Haiti over a year. Six scenarios representing autonomous sanitation systems were devised by combining three toilet types (container-based toilets (CBTs), ventilated improved pit (VIP) latrines, and flush toilets (WC)) with two sludge treatment processes (composting and biomethanization). Biodigester-based systems exhibited 1.05 times higher sanitary impacts and 1.03 times higher ecosystem impacts than those with composters. Among toilet types, CBTs had the lowest impacts, followed by VIP latrines, with WCs having the highest impacts. On average, WC scenarios were 3.85 times more impactful than VIP latrines and 4.04 times more impactful than those with CBTs regarding human health impact. Critical variables identified include the use of toilet paper, wood shavings, greenhouse gas emissions, and construction materials.

RESUMO

Objective: The study aims to understand the effect of new antibiotic-substituting supplements in feeding chickens of the Hisex Brown cross in industrial conditions. Materials and Methods: A total of 216 hatched chicks were randomly selected and distributed into Control, Test I, and Test II groups, with 3 replicates of 24 birds in three treatments. Results: At the end of the experiment, BW of T1/T2 birds was higher by 6.12% (p <0.01) and 10.29% (p <0.001) than CON. In comparison with the control hens, T1/T2 birds had a higher feed conversion rate and digestibility of nutrients. The blood indicators of T1/T2 hens exceeded those in control. Prebiotic supplementations were positively influenced in the immune indices of birds. IgA, IgG, IgM increased in groups T1/T2. Similar regularity was found in the natural resistance of chicks fed S1/S2. In the caecum, the Lactobacilli number was higher than in CON by 17.03% (p <0.01) in T1 and by 18.47% (p <0.01)-in T2; Bifidobacteria-by 17.94 (p <0.001) and 19.09% (p <0.01), respectively; at the same time, the number of E. coli decreased by 21.05% (p <0.01) and 24.21% (p <0.01). The concentration of emitted excreta noxious gases decreased: ammonia by 22.40%-24.95% (p <0.01); hydrogen sulfide by 10.67%-16.00% (p <0.01); and mercaptans by 12.90%-17.74% (p <0.05). Conclusion: These findings support the use of lactulose-based supplements as antibiotic alternatives to improve production in poultry farming and to reduce the toxic load on the environment.

RESUMO

The present work extends the scope of prior studies through analysis, modelling and simulation of the As, Cd, Co, Cu, Fe Mn, Mo, Ni and Zn release from Gentoo (Pygoscelis papua) and Chinstrap (Pygoscelis antarcticus) penguin guano to the Southern Ocean seawater and to Antarctic snow meltwater. Laboratory experimental results have been modelled considering kinetic processes between water and guano using two element pools in the guano compartment; its application allows us to interpret behaviours and predict release concentrations of dissolved trace elements from guano which are potentially useful for incorporation as elements source into biogeochemical models applied in the Southern Ocean. Variations in quantities and release patterns depending on the type of guano and aqueous medium in contact have been identified. The release percentages from the guano to the aqueous medium, once the steady state has been reached, vary depending on the water medium and guano type in the ranges of 100-2.9 % for Mo; 91.5-68.6 % for Ni; 81.8-22.8 % As; 52.0-43.9 % Cu; 26.9-7.4 % Mn; 24.9-5.4 for Co; 4.4-3.2 % for Zn and 0.94-0.51 % for Fe. Considering a penguin population of 774,000 Gentoo and 8,000,000 Chinstrap, the estimated annual mass released to the both seawater and freshwater would be ≈18,500 kg for Cu, ≈1710 kg for Zn, ≈1944 kg for Fe, ≈1640 kg for Mn, ≈499 kg for As, ≈289 kg for Ni, ≈155 kg for Mo, ≈36.7 kg for Cd and ≈8.1 kg for Co. These contributions can be locally significant both in promoting phytoplankton growth and in their role as inhibitors of primary productivity.

RESUMO

Florfenicol resistance genes (FRGs) are widely present in livestock farms. The aim of this study was to evaluate the removal efficiencies of FRGs as well as the relationships between FRGs, mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and bacterial communities during the natural drying (ND) and anaerobic digestion (AD) processes of manure treatment in swine farms by combining bacterial isolation, quantitative PCR and metagenomic approaches. Solid manure showed a higher abundance of FRGs than fresh manure and was the main contamination source of fexA and fexB in ND farms, whilst biogas slurry displayed a lower abundance of FRGs than the wastewater in AD farms. Moreover, fresh manure and wastewater showed a high abundance of optrA, and wastewater was the main contamination source of cfr in both ND and AD farms. Both optrA/fexA-positive enterococci and cfr/fexA-positive staphylococci were mainly isolated along the farms' treatment processes. The cfr-positive staphylococci were highly prevalent in wastewater (57.14 % - 100 %) and may be associated with nasal-derived cfr-positive porcine staphylococci. An increased abundance of Enterococcus, Jeotgalibaca and Vagococcus in the bacterial community structures may account for the high optrA abundance in wastewater and Jeotgalibaca may be another potential host of optrA. Furthermore, the abundance of FRG-related MGEs increased by 22.63 % after the ND process and decreased by 66.96 % in AD farms. A significant correlation was observed between cfr and ISEnfa4, whereas no significance was found between optrA and IS1216E, although IS1216E is the predominant insertion sequence involved in the transfer of optrA. In conclusion, manure and wastewater represented independent pollution sources of FRGs in swine farms. Associated MGEs might play a key role in the transfer and persistence of FRGs. The AD process was more efficient in the removal of FRGs than the ND method, nevertheless a longer storage of slurry may be required for a complete removal.

RESUMO

Background: In Ethiopia, domestic animals and their feces are not properly contained. However, the risk of exposure to zoonotic pathogens is not well documented. This study was conducted to assess animal handling practices and the risk of childhood diarrhea among rural households in northwest Ethiopia. Methods: This study was done among 403 randomly selected households. Information on animal handling was collected using a questionnaire and spot-check observation. The occurrence of childhood diarrhea in 14 days prior to the survey was assessed based on the reports of female head of households. Multivariable binary logistic regression analysis was performed to identify the association between animal handling practices and childhood diarrhea. Results: All the female head of households had contact with animal feces when preparing fuel disks and plastering the house components with animal dung. Domestic animals shared a corral within the living space of the humans in 20% of the households. Animals entered the human living quarters and accessed foods in 32% of the households. Moreover, 24% of the children aged 24 to 59 months had diarrhea in a 2-week period prior to the survey. Childhood diarrhea was associated with domestic animals sharing the same house as humans (AOR: 3.3, 95% CI: 1.3, 8.6), presence of animal excreta in child playing areas (AOR: 2.4, 95% CI: 1.2, 4.6), contact of domestic animals with stored foods (AOR: 3.5, 95% CI: 2.0, 5.9), trapped dirt under fingernails of female heads (AOR: 3.7, 95% CI: 1.9, 7.5), open defecation (AOR: 3.24, 95% CI: 1.8, 5.9), and unprotected sources (AOR: 4.2, 95% CI: 1.1, 15.3). Conclusion: Domestic animals and their excreta are not hygienically contained in the area. Animal handling practices including their excreta and the hygiene behavior of female head of households (eg, handwashing and food handling practices) should be improved to prevent childhood diarrhea.

RESUMO

A 70-year-old woman had been treated with methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis by a rheumatologist who opened a clinic near our hospital. In January of a certain year, she had respiratory symptoms of cough, sputum, and fever. Laboratory test results showed a white blood cell count of 8600/µL (neutrophil count of 5330/µL, lymphocyte count of 2490 µ/L), C-reactive protein (CRP) of 3.30 mg/dL. Chest radiography showed multiple infiltrative shadows in the right middle and lower lobes. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BAL) lymphocyte count was increased (65.1%), and histopathological findings were consistent with numerous bowl-shaped cryptococcus cells stained black by Grocott staining. Added measurement of serum cryptococcal antigen titers was 4096-fold. Treatment with fluconazole 400 mg/day was initiated, and her symptoms resolved; the shadows of the lung fields improved. When asked in detail, the cryptococcus infection route was suspected from swallow excreta. There have been no reported cases of pulmonary cryptococcosis suspected due to inhalation of swallow excreta presenting with multiple infiltrative shadows.

RESUMO

Arboviruses can be difficult to detect in the field due to relatively low prevalence in mosquito populations. The discovery that infected mosquitoes can release viruses in both their saliva and excreta gave rise to low-cost methods for the detection of arboviruses during entomological surveillance. We implemented both saliva and excreta-based entomological surveillance during the emergence of Zika virus (ZIKV) in French Guiana in 2016 by trapping mosquitoes around households of symptomatic cases with confirmed ZIKV infection. ZIKV was detected in mosquito excreta and not in mosquito saliva in 1 trap collection out of 85 (1.2%). One female Ae. aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae) was found with a ZIKV systemic infection in the corresponding trap. The lag time between symptom onset in a ZIKV-infected individual living near the trap site and ZIKV detection in this mosquito was 1 wk. These results highlight the potential of detection in excreta from trapped mosquitoes as a sensitive and cost-effective method to non invasively detect arbovirus circulation.

RESUMO

Background and Aim: The production of lignocellulosic biomass waste in the agricultural sector of Indonesia is quite high annually. Utilization of lignocellulosic biomass waste through fermentation technology can be used as feed and biofuel. Fermentation technology requires the involvement of micro-organisms such as bacteria (lactic acid bacteria or LAB). LABs can be isolated from various sources, such as duck excreta. However, there have not been many reports of LAB from duck excreta. The present study aimed to characterize LAB enzymes isolated from duck excreta and obtain LAB enzymes with superior fermentation properties. Materials and Methods: A total of 11 LAB cultures obtained from duck excreta in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, were tested. Enzyme characterization of each LAB was performed using the API ZYM kit (BioMérieux, Marcy-I'Etoile, France). The bacterial cell suspension was dropped onto the API ZYM™ cupule using a pipette and incubated for 4 h at 37°C. After incubation, ZYM A and ZYM B were dripped onto the API ZYM cupule, and color changes were observed for approximately 10 s under a strong light source. Results: Esterase activity was moderate for all LABs. The activity of α-chymotrypsin, ß-glucuronidase, α-fucosidase, and α-mannosidase was not observed in a total of 10 LAB. The phosphohydrolase and amino peptidase enzyme activity of seven LABs was strong. Only six LAB samples showed protease activity. The glycosyl hydrolase (GH) activity was observed in a total of 8 LAB, while the activity of 2 LAB was strong (Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis K5 and Lactobacillus brevis M4A). Conclusion: A total of 2 LABs have superior properties. L. lactis subsp. lactis K5 and L. brevis M4A have a high potential to be used in fermentation. They have the potential for further research, such as their effectiveness in fermentation, lignocellulose hydrolysis, feed additives, molecular characterization to detect specific enzymes, and their specific activities.

RESUMO

Anaerobic digestion of multiple substrates can generate more biogas while remaining stable, if positive synergistic effects are achieved. The type of co-digested substrates and the mixing ratio used, are the most important variables as each substrate has unique set of characteristics. Optimizing the volume ratios by testing various substrate mixing ratios is a popular method for determining the best-performing ratio of substrate mixture. The ternary mixture design has reportedly been found to quicken the process of testing different mixing ratios with high accuracy without running several experiments. Therefore, a ternary mixture design and a response surface approach are used in this work to ascertain the relationship between substrate mix and responses (biogas yield, methane yield, and synergy). The findings of the experiment revealed that R9 comprising 78.8 % human excreta, 11.8 % food leftovers and 9.4 % kitchen residue, had the highest methane production of 764.79 mLCH4/gVS and a synergistic index of 3.26. Additionally, the 3D response surface plots from the response surface model showed important and shared interactions between Human Excreta, (HE), Food Leftovers (FLO), and Kitchen Residue (KR). HE and KR had a similar positive synergistic effect on biogas yield, methane yield, and synergy, which was not the case for FLO. The response surface plots showed that the predicted responses (methane yield, biogas yield and synergy) increased with increasing HE and KR fractions and decreased with increasing FLO fractions in the substrate mixtures.

RESUMO

Hydrothermal carbonization may be a sustainable sanitary treatment for wet organic waste including human excreta. Human-excreta-derived hydrochar properties differ from those of typical wet biomass due to the formation of a biocrude-like phase at low reaction temperatures. This study characterized the importance of this phase in terms of hydrochar combustion properties and potential agricultural use. Hydrothermal carbonization of raw human excreta was undertaken at 180, 210, and 240 °C, after which the biocrude phase was extracted with dichloromethane. Physicochemical properties, surface-area parameters, combustion profiles, and gas emissions of non-extracted hydrochar, biocrude, and extracted hydrochar were compared. The potential agricultural use of extracted hydrochar was assessed in germination experiments. Biocrude comprised up to 49.5% of hydrochar mass with a calorific value of >60% that of extracted hydrochar. Biocrude combustion properties were better than those of hydrochar, before and after extraction as demonstrated by higher combustion index value (Si). The extracted hydrochar surface area (34.7 m2 g-1) was greater than that of non-extracted hydrochar (<2 m2 g-1), and seeds germinated more readily due to the lower phytotoxin content. Most macro and micronutrients required for plant growth were retained in the extracted hydrochar. The extraction of biocrude from human-excreta-derived hydrochar not only provided a higher-quality fuel with enhanced combustion properties but also improved hydrochar characteristics, suggesting its potential as a soil additive for enhanced plant growth.

RESUMO

Canada has recently invested in the large-scale exploitation of scandium oxide. However, there are no studies available to date to understand its toxicokinetics in the animal or human body, which is necessary to assess exposure and health risks. The aim of this research was to investigate the toxicokinetics of absorbed scandium oxide (Sc2O3) using the rat as an experimental model. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were injected intravenously with 0.3 or 1 mg Sc2O3/kg body weight (bw). Blood and excreta (urine and feces) were collected sequentially during a 21-day period, and main organs (liver, spleen, lungs, kidneys, brain) were withdrawn at sacrifice on day 21. Inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used for the measurement of Sc element in the different samples. The mean residence time (MRTIV) calculated from the blood profile was 19.7 ± 5.9 h and 43.4 ± 24.6 h at the lower and higher doses, respectively. Highest tissue levels of Sc were found in the lungs and liver; respective lung values of 10.6 ± 6.2% and 3.4 ± 2.3% of the Sc dose were observed at the time of sacrifice while liver levels represented 8.9 ± 6.4% and 4.6 ± 1.1%. Elimination of Sc from the body was not complete after 21 days. Cumulative fecal excretion over the 21-day collection period represented 12.3 ± 1.3% and 5.9 ± 1.0% of the lower and higher Sc doses, respectively, and showed a significant effect of the dose on the excretion; only a small fraction of the Sc dose was recovered in urine (0.025 ± 0.016% and 0.011 ± 0.004% in total, respectively). In addition to an effect of the dose on the toxicokinetics, results highlight the importance of the lung as a site of accumulation and retention of Sc2O3, which raises the question of the risks of effects related to respiratory exposure in workers. The results also question the relevance of urine as a matrix for biological exposure monitoring. A more in-depth inhalation toxicokinetic study would be necessary.

RESUMO

Avian gut microbial communities are complex and play a fundamental role in regulating biological functions within an individual. Although it is well established that diet can influence the structure and composition of the gut microbiota, foraging behaviour may also play a critical, yet unexplored role in shaping the composition, dynamics, and adaptive potential of avian gut microbiota. In this review, we examine the potential influence of coprophagic foraging behaviour on the establishment and adaptability of wild avian gut microbiomes. Coprophagy involves the ingestion of faeces, sourced from either self (autocoprophagy), conspecific animals (allocoprophagy), or heterospecific animals. Much like faecal transplant therapy, coprophagy may (i) support the establishment of the gut microbiota of young precocial species, (ii) directly and indirectly provide nutritional and energetic requirements, and (iii) represent a mechanism by which birds can rapidly adapt the microbiota to changing environments and diets. However, in certain contexts, coprophagy may also pose risks to wild birds, and their microbiomes, through increased exposure to chemical pollutants, pathogenic microbes, and antibiotic-resistant microbes, with deleterious effects on host health and performance. Given the potentially far-reaching consequences of coprophagy for avian microbiomes, and the dearth of literature directly investigating these links, we have developed a predictive framework for directing future research to understand better when and why wild birds engage in distinct types of coprophagy, and the consequences of this foraging behaviour. There is a need for comprehensive investigation into the influence of coprophagy on avian gut microbiotas and its effects on host health and performance throughout ontogeny and across a range of environmental perturbations. Future behavioural studies combined with metagenomic approaches are needed to provide insights into the function of this poorly understood behaviour.

RESUMO

Rare earth elements (REEs) are increasingly used in a wide range of applications. However, their toxicokinetic behaviors in animals and humans are not yet fully documented, hindering health risk assessments. We used a rat experimental model to provide novel data on the toxicokinetics of the insoluble oxide forms of praseodymium (Pr), neodymium (Nd), cerium (Ce) and yttrium (Y) administered intravenously. Detailed blood, urinary and fecal time courses were documented through serial sampling over 21 days in male Sprague-Dawley rats exposed to a mixture of these REE oxides administered at two different doses (0.3 or 1 mg kg-1 bw of each REE oxide commercially sold as bulk µm-sized particles). Tissue REE levels at the time of sacrifice were also measured. Significant effects of the dose on REE time courses in blood and on cumulative urinary and fecal excretion rates were observed for all four REE oxides assessed, as lower cumulative excretion rates were noted at the higher REE dose. In the liver, the main accumulation organ, the fraction of the administered REE dose remaining in the tissue at necropsy was similar at both doses. Toxicokinetic data for the REE oxides were compared to similar data for their chloride salts (also administered intravenously in a mixture, at 0.3 and 1 mg kg-1 bw of each REE chloride) obtained from a previous study. Compared to their chloride counterparts, faster elimination of REE oxides from the blood was observed in the first hours post-dosing. Furthermore, higher mean residence time (MRT) values as well as slower cumulative urinary and fecal excretion were determined for the REE oxides. Also, while liver REE retention was similar for both REE forms, the fractions of the administered REEs recovered in the spleen and lungs were noticeably higher for the REE oxides, at both dose levels. This study highlights the importance of both the dose and form of the administered REEs on their toxicokinetic profiles. Results indicate that chronic exposure and increased doses of REEs may favor bioaccumulation in the body, in particular for insoluble oxide forms of REEs, which are eliminated more slowly from the body.

RESUMO

Biochar addition plays an important role in manure composting, but its driving mechanism on microbial succession and humification process of human excreta composting is still unclear. In the present study, the mechanism of biochar addition was explored by analysing the humification process and microbial succession pattern of human excreta aerobic composting without and with 10% biochar (HF and BHF). Results indicated that BHF improved composting temperature, advanced the thermophilic phase by 1 d, increased the germination index by 49.03%, promoted the growth rate of humic acid content by 17.46%, and raised the compost product with the ratio of humic acid to fulvic acid (HA/FA) by 16.19%. Biochar regulated the diversity of fungi and bacteria, increasing the relative abundance of Planifilum, Meyerozyma and Melanocarpus in the thermophilic phase, and Saccharomonospora, Flavobacterium, Thermomyces and Remersonia in the mature phase, which accelerates the humification. Bacterial communities' succession had an obvious correlation with the total carbon, total nitrogen, and temperature (P < 0.05), while the succession of fungal communities was influenced by the HA/FA and pH (P < 0.05). This study could provide a reference for the improvement of on-site human excreta harmless by extending the thermophilic phase, and facilitating the humification in human excreta compost with biochar addition.

RESUMO

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals are environmental pollutants that can enter our bodies and cause diverse pathologies. Some bisphenols and parabens have been shown to be capable of modifying proper functioning of the endocrine system. Among other dysfunctions, endocrine-disrupting chemicals can cause changes in intestinal microbiota. Faeces are a convenient matrix that can be useful for identifying the quantity of endocrine disruptors that reach the intestine and the extent to which the organism is exposed to these pollutants. The present work developed a new analytical method to determine 17 compounds belonging to the paraben and bisphenol families found in human faeces. The extraction method was optimized using an ultrasound-assisted extraction technique followed by a clean-up step based on the QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe) technique. Optimization was performed using the design of experiments technique. In validation analysis, the method was proven to be linear over a wide range. R-squared outcomes were between 95 and 99%. Selectiveness and sensitivity outcomes were acceptable, with detection limits being between 1 and 10 ng g-1 in all cases, whilst quantification limits were between 3 and 25 ng g-1 in all instances, with the exception of bisphenol AF. The method was deemed accurate, with recovery values being close to 100% and relative standard deviations being lower than 15% in all cases. Applicability was examined by analysing 13 samples collected from volunteers (male and female). All samples were contaminated with at least one of the analytes studied. The most commonly found compounds were methylparaben and bisphenol A, which were detected in almost all samples and quantitatively determined in 11 and 12 samples, respectively. Of the 17 compounds analysed, 11 were found in at least one sample. Outcomes demonstrate that faeces can be a good matrix for the determination of exposure to contaminants of interest here.

RESUMO

Biogas toilets are one of the most resource-efficient sanitation technologies. The technology has dual purposes of generating energy and stabilizing waste-producing biofertilizers. In Ethiopia, knowledge of human feces' energy potential is limited to optimize the development of biogas toilet facilities. Therefore, this study was aimed to evaluate the biogas and biofertilizer potential of human feces in Jimma City, Ethiopia, which may contribute to the development of sustainable sanitation technologies. The study was lab-based experimental design. In the lab-scale batch experiment, fresh human excreta samples were collected using a urine diversion raised toilet. Using ultimate and proximate laboratory analyses, the theoretical yield of biogas was predicted. Then a series of anaerobic digestion batch experiments were conducted to determine the practical energy yield. The bio-fertilizer potential of human feces was determined by analyzing the nutrient contents of human feces. The findings of this study showed that the bio-methane yield from the experimental results has a mean of 0.393 m3 kg-1, which is 14.16 MJ kg-1. The bio-methane meter cube per capita per head per year were 28.71 (28.03-29.27) from the experimental result and 45.26 for the theoretical yield of methane. In this study, the bio-fertilizer potential of human feces was evaluated using nutrient analysis, specifically the NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium). Accordingly, human feces contain potassium (2.29 mg kg-1), phosphorus (1.12 mg kg-1), and nitrogen (3.71 mg kg-1). This finding suggests the bio-methane potential of human feces can be used for energy recovery and alternative sanitation options, providing a positive remedy for the sanitation crisis in urban settings.

RESUMO

This study aimed to assess the nutritional quality of cowpea seeds (cv. Doljana - CSD) and the impact of partially replacing soybean meal with CSD, along with the supplementation of microencapsulated Lactobacillus salivarius (LS), on the growth performance, selected carcass traits, biochemical plasma profile, tibia bone quality, and microbial populations in the ceca and excreta of broiler chickens aged 1 to 35 days. A total of 432 mixed-sex Ross 308 broiler chickens, aged one day, were randomly allocated to four groups, with 108 birds in each group, further divided into 6 pens containing 18 birds each. The experimental design featured a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, with two cowpea seed levels (CSD0 and CSD15%) and the presence or absence (Yes/No) of microencapsulated LS probiotic (0 and 1 g/kg feed). The experimental diets did not significantly influenced (p > 0.05) production performances. However, the production efficiency factor was notably higher in the CSD0 (336.8%) and CSD15 (332.2%) groups with LS compared to CSD0 (322.4%) and CSD15 (320.6%) groups without LS supplementation. Regarding carcass traits, the CSD15 group with LS supplementation exhibited higher dressing (70.69%) and liver (2.47%) percentages compared to the other groups. Plasma profile analysis revealed significant reductions (p < 0.05) in total cholesterol (from 115 mg/dL to 105 mg/dL) and triglycerides (from 54.80 mg/dL to 46.80 mg/dL) in the CSD15 group with LS supplementation compared to the CSD0 group, with or without LS supplementation. Moreover, the CSD15 group with LS had significantly higher total protein, albumin, and calcium levels and significantly lower (p < 0.05) uric acid levels compared to the CSD0 group, irrespective of LS supplementation. Tibia bone traits and minerals showed no significant effects. However, the pH exhibited a linear decrease from 6.90 in the CSD0 group without LS to 6.69 in the CSD15 group with LS supplementation. In terms of cecal microbial populations, Coliforms decreased from 7.14 CFU/g in the CSD15 group without LS to 5.48 CFU/g in the CSD15 group with LS. Significant alterations were also observed in Clostridium spp., E. coli, Enterococcus spp., and Staphylococcus spp. in the ceca and excreta of the CSD15 group with LS supplementation compared to the CSD0 group, with or without LS supplementation. Beneficial bacteria, specifically Lactobacillus spp., significantly increased in the cecal content of CSD0 (9.06 CFU/g) and CSD15 (9.01 CFU/g) groups with LS compared to CSD0 (8.41 CFU/g) and CSD15 (8.11 CFU/g) groups without LS. In summary, this study suggests that cowpea seeds can be used as a partial replacement for soybean meal in broiler chicken diets, and microencapsulated Lactobacillus salivarius can be employed as a probiotic supplement.
