Cyanobacterial blooms have become a serious water pollution problem in many parts of the world, and the monitoring and study of the impacts of biotoxins on human health are of vital importance. In this study, the contents of microcystin-LR, 2-methylisoborneol, and geosmin were measured in water and sediment samples from Nanwan Reservoir, China, by means of bimonthly sampling between February and December 2023. The physicochemical and hydrochemical factors and phytoplankton dynamics in the reservoir were also investigated. The results showed that the overall mean concentration of microcystin-LR (0.729 µg/L) in summer approached the guiding standard (1 µg/L) set by the WHO for drinking water. Furthermore, the content of 2-methylisoborneol (143.5 ng/L) was 14 times higher than the national standard (10 ng/L). The results of laboratory cultures showed that lower light levels and medium temperatures were suitable for the growth of Microcystis and Planktothricoides but higher temperatures promoted the synthesis and release of microcystin-LR and 2-methylisoborneol. In addition, the results of co-cultures showed that the growth of Planktothricoides was inhibited by Microcystis. Our results suggest that cyanobacterial bloom and the presence of the metabolites 2-methylisoborneol and microcystin-LR can decrease the drinking water quality of Nanwan Reservoir.

The monitoring of drinking water quality is a vital public health concern together with taste and odour (T&O) episodes, an emerging global problem causing a loss of public trust to the quality of water. Our objective was to monitor water quality of an important drinking water source and also the production dynamics of geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) which cause taste and odour problems in the lake. The trophic status of the lake was classified as mesotrophic. 2-MIB was positively correlated temperature while geosmin was positively correlated with depth. Other physicochemical parameters related with water quality did not show significant correlation with geosmin and 2-MIB. The highest 2-MIB and geosmin concentrations were detected during the thermal stratification period in 2016 and 2018 by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Cyanobacteria and Actinobacteria were detected in geosmin & 2-MIB detected samples as potential taste and odour producers by PCR. Selected samples were analysed with metabarcoding and Planktothrix, Pseudanabaena, Cyanobium, Streptomyces, and Nocardioides were detected as potential geosmin & 2-MIB producers. Micrococcus, Rhodococcus, Acinetobacter, Comamonas, Novosphingobium, Sphingopyxis, Pseudomonas, Sphingomonas, Stenotrophomonas and Flavobacterium were identified as potential geosmin & 2-MIB degraders. The results highlighted the significant role of the autochthonous bacterial community, temperature and thermal stratification in the taste and odour dynamics of a drinking water source.

Cyanobacterial blooms are common events that releases secondary metabolites into water posing considerable threats to the environment, wildlife, and public health. Some of these metabolites, such as microcystin, have been extensively studied and associated with harmful effects in mammals and aquatic organisms, while the biological effects of others, like geosmin, remain much less investigated. Enhancing our understanding of cyanotoxins effects on organisms is especially relevant facing the complex scenarios projected due to global warming. The aim of this study was to assess the transcriptional modulation in whole zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae (n = 9) in response to a 7-days immersion exposure to 3 µg L-1 MCLR or 5 µg L-1 geosmin. No mortality or differences in length gain were observed in zebrafish larvae exposed to environmentally realistic doses of both cyanotoxins. The exposure to MCLR and to geosmin caused the differential expression of 164 and 172 genes respectively, being 23 upregulated by MCLR and 98 upregulated by geosmin. Among the upregulated genes, 16 were shared, while 42 were shared among the downregulated genes. Over-representation analysis identified three enriched GO terms only among the genes upregulated by geosmin: organic hydroxy compound metabolic process (1901615), small molecule biosynthetic process (0044283), and lipid metabolic process (0006629). In fact, the expression of 12 of the 13 genes directly involved in the synthesis of cholesterol from acetyl-CoA was upregulated by geosmin. A chronic upregulation of cholesterol biosynthetic pathway is linked to several diseases and metabolic disorders, including alterations in sex-related hormones. Moreover, our results indicate that geosmin and MCLR acts through different mechanisms. Geosmin does not appear to provoke short-term adverse effects as MCLR but could disrupt the endocrine system by altering the lipid and steroid metabolism.

The escalating proliferation of cyanobacteria poses significant taste and odor (T/O) challenges, impacting freshwater ecosystems, public health, and water treatment costs. We examined monthly variations in four T/O compounds from September 2011 to August 2012 in Chaohu Lake's eastern drinking water source (DECL). More importantly, we compared the reported T/O occurrence and the related factors in freshwater bodies worldwide. The assessment of T/O issues indicated a severe and widespread problem, with many cases surpassing odor threshold values. Remarkably, China reported the highest frequency and severity of odor-related problems. A temporal analysis revealed variations in odor occurrences within the same water body across different years, emphasizing the need to consider high values in all seasons for water safety. Globally, T/O issues were widespread, demanding attention to variations within the same water body and across different layers. Algae were crucial contributors to odor compounds, necessitating targeted interventions due to diverse odorant sources and properties. A correlation analysis alone lacked definitive answers, emphasizing the essential role of further validation, such as algae isolation. Nutrients are likely to have influenced the T/O, as GSM and MIB correlated positively with nitrate and ammonia nitrogen in DECL, resulting in proposed control recommendations. This study offers recommendations for freshwater ecosystem management and serves as a foundation for future research and management strategies to address T/O challenges.

The sensory quality of drinking water, and particularly its taste and odor (T&O) is a key determinant of consumer acceptability, as consumers evaluate water by their senses. Some of the conventional treatment processes to control compounds which impart unpleasant T&O have limitations because of their low efficiency and/or high costs. Therefore, there is a great need to develop an effective process for removing T&O compounds without secondary concerns. The primary objective of this study was to assess for the first time the effectiveness of spirulina-based carbon materials in removing geosmin (GSM) and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) from water, two commonly occurring natural T&O compounds. The efficiency of the materials to remove environmentally relevant concentrations of GSM and 2-MIB (ng L-1) from ultrapure and raw water was investigated using a sensitive headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC/MS) method. Moreover, the genotoxic and cytotoxic effects of the spirulina-based materials were assessed for the first time to evaluate their safety and their potential in the treatment of water for human consumption. Based on the results, spirulina-based materials were found to be promising for drinking water treatment applications, as they did not exert geno-cytotoxic effects on human cells, while presenting high efficiency in removing GSM and 2-MIB from water.

OBJECTIVE: To establishe an analysis and identification method for 2-methylisoborneol(2-MIB) and geosmin(GSM) in water using purge and trap-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. METHODS: The samples were enriched and analyzed using a purge and trap system, followed by the separation on a DB-624(30 m×0.25 mm, 1.4 µm) chromatographic column. Quantification was performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry with the selected ion monitoring and internal standard calibration. RESULTS: The calibration curves for 2-MIB and GSM showed an excellent linearity in the range of 1 to 100 ng/L with R~2 values greater than 0.999. The detection limit and quantification limit for both 2-MIB and GSM were 0.33 ng/L and 1.0 ng/L, respectively. Spike recovery experiments were further carried on the source water and drinking water at three concentration levels. It showed that the average recoveries were from 82.0% to 111.0% for 2-MIB while 84.0% to 110% for GSM. Additionally, the test precision of 2-MIB and GSM ranged from 1.9% to 7.3% and 1.9% to 5.0%(n=6), respectively. The analysis of multiple samples including the local source water, treated water and distribution network water confirmed the existence of 2-MIB and GSM. CONCLUSION: Compared to the national standard(GB/T 5750.8-2023), the proposed method enables fully automated sample introduction and analysis without the extra pre-treatment. It provides the advantages of simplicity, good repeatability and high accuracy.

(-)-Geosmin has high demand in perfumes and cosmetic products for its earthy congenial aroma. The current production of (-)-geosmin is either by distillation of sun-baked soil or by inefficient chemical synthesis because of the presence of multiple chiral centers. Fermentation processes are not viable as the titers of the Streptomyces sp. based processes are low. This work presents an alternative route by the heterologous synthesis of (-)-geosmin in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The enzyme involved is the bifunctional geosmin synthase that catalyzes the conversion of farnesyl diphosphate to germacradienol and germacradienol to geosmin. This study evaluated the activity of many orthologs of geosmin synthase when expressed heterologously in S. cerevisiae. When the well-characterized CAB41566 from Streptomyces coelicolor origin was tested, germacradienol and germacrene D were detected but no geosmin. Bioinformatic analysis based on high/low identities to N-terminal and C-terminal domains of CAB41566 was carried out to identify different orthologs of geosmin synthase proteins from different bacterial and fungal origins. ADO68918 of Stigmatella aurantiaca origin showed the best activity among the tested orthologs, not only in terms of geosmin production but also an order of magnitude higher total abundance of the products of geosmin synthase as compared to CAB41566. This study successfully demonstrated the production of (-)-geosmin in S. cerevisiae and offers an alternative, sustainable and environment-friendly approach to producing (-)-geosmin.

Freshwater benthic algae form complex mat matrices that can confer ecosystem benefits but also produce harmful cyanotoxins and nuisance taste-and-odor (T&O) compounds. Despite intensive study of the response of pelagic systems to anthropogenic change, the environmental factors controlling toxin presence in benthic mats remain uncertain. Here, we present a unique dataset from a rapidly urbanizing community (Kansas City, USA) that spans environmental, toxicological, taxonomic, and genomic indicators to identify the prevalence of three cyanotoxins (microcystin, anatoxin-a, and saxitoxin) and two T&O compounds (geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol). Thereafter, we construct a random forest model informed by game theory to assess underlying drivers. Microcystin (11.9 ± 11.6 µg/m2), a liver toxin linked to animal fatalities, and geosmin (0.67 ± 0.67 µg/m2), a costly-to-treat malodorous compound, were the most abundant compounds and were present in 100 % of samples, irrespective of land use or environmental conditions. Anatoxin-a (8.1 ± 11.6 µg/m2) and saxitoxin (0.18 ± 0.39 µg/m2), while not always detected, showed a systematic tradeoff in their relative importance with season, an observation not previously reported in the literature. Our model indicates that microcystin concentrations were greatest where microcystin-producing genes were present, whereas geosmin concentrations were high in the absence of geosmin-producing genes. Together, these results suggest that benthic mats produce microcystin in situ but that geosmin production may occur ex situ with its presence in mats attributable to adsorption by organic matter. Our study broadens the awareness of benthic cyanobacteria as a source of harmful and nuisance metabolites and highlights the importance of benthic monitoring for sustaining water quality standards in rivers.

Numerous utilities encounter issues with taste and odor that alter the public's impression of the safety of drinking water. The creation of certain components in water naturally due to global climate change is another source of taste and odor components, in addition to industrial emissions. Geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB), both of which are generated by blue-green algae and actinomycetes, are two substances that contribute to the musty and earthy smells in drinking water sources. Unfortunately, current conventional treatment plants only partially remove 2-MIB and geosmin. Therefore, to protect the environment and public health, more up-to-date or optimized treatment methods should be applied to outdated treatment facilities. Best treatment practices, evaluation standards, and decision-making approaches, however, are still shrouded in mystery. The goal of this study was to identify the most effective treatment options for 2-MIB and geosmin. By using the analytical hierarchy process (AHP), a total of 22 assessment criteria were found and prioritized. A thorough literature search led to the identification of potential treatment options, and their effectiveness was evaluated. These options and priority rankings were decided upon using AHP in the decision-making process. Advanced oxidation techniques came out on top in the final priority ranking, followed by membrane filtering, adsorption, oxidation, hybrid processes, and traditional treatment methods. The applied analytical decision techniques may also be used to choose the optimal treatment options, even though the results are particular to 2-MIB and geosmin.

Geosmin is an environmental pollutant that causes off-flavor in water and aquatic products. The high occurrence of geosmin contamination in aquatic systems and aquaculture raises public awareness, however, few studies have investigated the response pathways of geosmin stress on freshwater fish. In this research, grass carp were exposed to 50 µg/L geosmin for 96 h, liver tissue was sequenced and validated using real-time qPCR. In total of 528 up-regulated genes and 488 down-regulated genes were observed, includes cytochrome P450 and uridine diphosphate (UDP)-glucuronosyltransferase related genes. KEGG analysis showed that chemical carcinogenesis-DNA adducts, metabolism of xenobiotics by cytochrome P450, drug metabolism-cytochrome P450 pathway was enriched. Common genes from the target genes of microRNAs and differential expression genes are enriched in metabolism of xenobiotics cytochrome P450 pathway. Two miRNAs (dre-miR-146a and miR-212-3p) down regulated their target genes (LOC127510138 and adh5, respectively) which are enriched cytochrome P450 related pathway. The results present that geosmin is genetoxic to grass carp and indicate that cytochrome P450 system and UDP-glucuronosyltransferase play essential roles in biotransformation of geosmin. MicroRNAs regulate the biotransformation of geosmin by targeting specific genes, which contributes to the development of strategies to manage its negative impacts in both natural and artificial environments.

A new concept is presented for eliminating off-flavor from cold-water RAS-grown fish, while feeding, and as a part of the normal grow-out period. The technology is based on disconnecting the nitrification biofilter, and instead passing the water through an electrolysis system, which both oxidizes the ammonia and disinfects the water, while also removing the off-flavor compounds from the water, which thereby results in the purging of the fish. The purging period was expected to last up to 2 weeks and the fish are fed throughout it. Laboratory and pilot plant experiments were performed to prove the new concept. Lab experiments included quantification of the removal of MIB and geosmin by electrooxidation and stripping, together and separately, in the presence and absence of organic matter. A pilot plant experiment was performed using Rainbow trout to determine the rate at which the off-flavor compounds were removed from the water and the fish flesh (both skin and muscle were tested). The results show that the treatment process eliminated off-flavors in the water after ∼7 days and that the fish were below taste and odor threshold for geosmin and MIB after a maximum of 11 days. Detachment from the biofilter and the fact that the water was vigorously disinfected during the electrooxidation step guaranteed that no further off-flavor compounds would be generated during the operation. Aquacultural-management assessment indicates that RAS farms can increase both their annual production and their income by more than 10%, by implementing the suggested concept as part of the grow-out period.

Contamination by odor substances such as geosmin (GSM) and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) was examined in the cultured water from aquaculture farming in the region of the Hongze Lake in 2022, and some factors influencing residual levels of them in the water were analyzed. Geographically, high concentrations of GSM were located mainly in the north and northeast culture areas of the lake, while those of 2-MIB were found in the northeast and southwest. Analysis of the water in the enclosure culture revealed significant differences in the concentrations of GSM and 2-MIB among the cultured species. The mean concentrations of GSM in culture water were ranked in the order: crab > the four major Chinese carps > silver and bighead carp, and silver and bighead carp > crab > the four major Chinese carps for 2-MIB. The concentration of GSM was significantly higher at 38.99 ± 18.93 ng/L in crab culture water compared to other fish culture water. Significant differences were observed in GSM concentrations between crab enclosure culture and pond culture, while 2-MIB levels were comparable. These findings suggest that cultural management practices significantly affect the generation of odor substances. The taste and odor (T&O) assessment revealed that the residual levels of GSM and 2-MIB in most samples were below the odor threshold concentrations (OTCs), although high levels of GSM and 2-MIB in all water bodies were at 30.9% and 27.5%, respectively. Compared with the corresponding data from other places and the regulation guidelines of Japan, USA, and China, the region in the Hongze Lake is generally classified as a slightly T&O area, capable of supporting the aquaculture production scale.

An increasing demand for fish products has led to an intensive aquaculture production in Brazil, and cultivation of fish constituted 860 × 103 tons in 2022, contributing to the 87% of total fish consumption. Nile tilapia constitutes almost half of the aquaculture production, and most tilapia farms use floating net cages. One of the major constraints of intensive fish production is production of off-flavors. Release of nutrients by the fish leads to deterioration of the water quality and stimulates growth of microorganisms, also including off-flavor producing species. The objective of this study was to determine levels of taste and odor compounds (geosmin, 2-MIB and a selection of volatile compounds) and their impact on the flavor quality of Nile tilapia produced in net cages in reservoirs in São Paulo State, Brazil. GC-MS analysis of fish and water from six different farms showed concentrations of geosmin in the water from 1 to 8 ng/L, while geosmin in fish flesh ranged from 40 to 750 ng/kg. The level of 2-MIB in water was 2 to 25 ng/L, and 0 to 800 ng/kg fish. The GC-MS analysis also revealed presence of more than 100 volatile organic compounds in the fish flesh, consisting of aldehydes, alcohols, benzene derivatives, hydrocarbons, ketones and few other compounds. Geosmin and 2-MIB related flavor notes were detected in all fish by a sensory panel, and a high correlation between the chemical and sensory analyses was found. The potential impact of the volatile organic compounds on the fish flavor is discussed. Analysis of the water quality in the reservoirs indicated that levels of geosmin and 2-MIB levels were highly influenced by the nutrient levels in the water.

Cyanobacteria can exist in water resources and produce odorants. 2-Methylisoborneol (2-MIB) and geosmin are the main odorant compounds affecting the drinking water quality in reservoirs. In this study, encoding genes 2-MIB (mic, monoterpene cyclase) and geosmin (geo, putative geosmin synthase) were investigated using newly developed primers for quantitative PCR (qPCR). Gene copy numbers were compared to 2-MIB/geosmin concentrations and cyanobacterial cell abundance. Samples were collected between July and October 2020, from four drinking water sites in South Korea. The results showed similar trends in three parameters, although the changes in the 2-MIB/geosmin concentrations followed the changes in the mic/geo copy numbers more closely than the cyanobacterial cell abundances. The number of odorant gene copies decreased from upstream to downstream. Regression analysis revealed a strong positive linear correlation between gene copy number and odorant concentration for mic (R2 = 0.8478) and geo (R2 = 0.601). In the analysis of several environmental parameters, only water temperature was positively correlated with both mic and geo. Our results demonstrated the feasibility of monitoring 2-MIB/geosmin occurrence using qPCR of their respective synthase genes. Odorant-producing, gene-based qPCR monitoring studies may contribute to improving drinking water quality management.

Introduction: Low temperature is the most common method used to maintain the freshness of Phlebopus portentosus during long-distance transportation. However, there is no information regarding the nutritional changes that occur in P. portentosus preserved postharvest in low temperature. Methods: In this study, the changes in flavor quality and bioactive components in fruiting bodies stored at 4 °C for different storage periods were determined through LC/MS and GC/MS analyses. Sampling was performed at 0, 3, 5, 7, and 13 days storage. Results and Discussion: Based on the results, the metabolites present in caps and stipes were different at the same period and significantly different after 7 days of storage. A total of 583 and 500 different metabolites were detected in caps and stipes, respectively, and were mainly lipids and lipid-like molecules, organic acids and derivatives, organic oxygen compounds and others. Except for prenol lipids and nucleotides, the expression levels of most metabolites increased with longer storage time. In addition, geosmin was identified as the major contributor to earthy-musty odors, and the level of geosmin was increased when the storage time was short. Conclusion: The variations in these metabolites might cause changes in flavor quality and bioactive components in P. portentosus. Variations in these metabolites were thoroughly analyzed, and the results revealed how storage processes affect the postharvest quality of P. portentosus for the first time.

Under the guidance of MS/MS-based molecular networking, eight odoriferous sesquiterpenes including two undescribed geosmin-type sesquiterpenoid degradations, odoripenoid A (1) and odoripenoid B (2), and two undescribed germacrane-type sesquiterpenoids, odoripenoid C (3) and odoripenoid (4), together with four known related compounds (5-8) were isolated from the EtOAc extract of the marine mesophotic zone sponge-associated Streptomyces sp. NBU3428. All chemical structures including absolute configurations of these compounds were elucidated by means of HRESIMS, NMR, ECD calculations and single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments. Compounds 1 and 2 represent the rarely geosmin-related metabolites directly as natural products from actinomycetes. The isolated compounds (1-8) were assayed in a range of biological activities. Compounds 1 and 2 showed anti-Candida albicans activity with MIC values of 16 and 32 µg/mL, respectively, representing potential antifungal agents.

Cyanobacteria commonly form large blooms in waterbodies; they can produce cyanotoxins, with toxic effects on humans and animals, and volatile compounds, causing bad tastes and odors (T&O) at naturally occurring low concentrations. Notwithstanding the large amount of literature on either cyanotoxins or T&O, no review has focused on them at the same time. The present review critically evaluates the recent literature on cyanotoxins and T&O compounds (geosmin, 2-methylisoborneol, ß-ionone and ß-cyclocitral) to identify research gaps on harmful exposure of humans and animals to both metabolite classes. T&O and cyanotoxins production can be due to the same or common to different cyanobacterial species/strains, with the additional possibility of T&O production by non-cyanobacterial species. The few environmental studies on the co-occurrence of these two groups of metabolites are not sufficient to understand if and how they can co-vary, or influence each other, perhaps stimulating cyanotoxin production. Therefore, T&Os cannot reliably serve as early warning surrogates for cyanotoxins. The scarce data on T&O toxicity seem to indicate a low health risk (but the inhalation of ß-cyclocitral deserves more study). However, no data are available on the effects of combined exposure to mixtures of cyanotoxins and T&O compounds and to combinations of T&O compounds; therefore, whether the co-occurrence of cyanotoxins and T&O compounds is a health issue remains an open question.

The removal of four Contaminants of Emerging Concern, namely bisphenol A, sulfamethoxazole, diclofenac and benzotriazole; two odorous compounds, geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol, frequently detected in recirculating aquaculture systems; and Hg(II) was investigated using ZnO-based materials doped or co-doped with Ce and Cu under simulated solar radiation. Photocatalysts were synthetized via a hydrothermal route and their efficiency was assessed by changing some operational parameters in different water matrices of increasing complexity. The mixture of contaminants was successfully degraded in just 1 h, while the complete mineralization was achieved in a few hours; experiments performed in an actual aquaculture water confirmed the efficiency and broad versatility of the synthesized materials.

Geosmin is one of the most common earthy-musty odor compounds, which is mainly produced by Streptomyces. Streptomyces radiopugnans was screened in radiation-polluted soil, which has the potential to overproduce geosmin. However, due to the complex cellular metabolism and regulation mechanism, the phenotypes of S. radiopugnans were hard to investigate. A genome-scale metabolic model of S. radiopugnans named iZDZ767 was constructed. Model iZDZ767 involved 1,411 reactions, 1,399 metabolites, and 767 genes; its gene coverage was 14.1%. Model iZDZ767 could grow on 23 carbon sources and five nitrogen sources, which achieved 82.1% and 83.3% prediction accuracy, respectively. For the essential gene prediction, the accuracy was 97.6%. According to the simulation of model iZDZ767, D-glucose and urea were the best for geosmin fermentation. The culture condition optimization experiments proved that with D-glucose as the carbon source and urea as the nitrogen source (4 g/L), geosmin production could reach 581.6 ng/L. Using the OptForce algorithm, 29 genes were identified as the targets of metabolic engineering modification. With the help of model iZDZ767, the phenotypes of S. radiopugnans could be well resolved. The key targets for geosmin overproduction could also be identified efficiently.

Geosmin synthase (geoA) and 2-MIB cyclase (mic) are key biosynthetic genes responsible for the production of taste and odour (T&O) compounds, geosmin and 2-MIB. These T&O compounds are becoming an increasing global problem for drinking water supplies. It is thought that geosmin and 2-MIB may be linked to, or exacerbated by, a variety of different environmental and nutrient triggers. However, to the best of our knowledge, no studies to date have evaluated the combined effects of seasonality, temperature, and nutrient concentrations on geoA and mic copy numbers in conjunction with T&O concentrations. In this study, environmental triggers behind geosmin and 2-MIB production were investigated in nine reservoirs across Wales, U.K. between July 2019 - August 2020. The abundance of geoA and mic were quantified through quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (qPCR). Temporal changes in geoA and geosmin concentrations revealed geoA to be an indicator of monthly geosmin concentrations, although only when geosmin concentrations exceeded 100 ng L-1. Model analysis of a reservoir with elevated geosmin concentrations revealed geoA to be significantly associated with mean temperature (p < 0.001) and the nutrients dissolved reactive silicate (p < 0.001), dissolved iron (p < 0.001), total inorganic nitrogen to phosphorous ratio (TIN:TP) (p < 0.001) and ammonium to nitrate ratio (NH4+:NO3-) (p < 0.001). Sulphate also demonstrated a significant positive linear relationship with geoA (p < 0.001). For mic analysis, NH4+:NO3- was significantly associated with mic (p < 0.05) and an association with dissolved reactive silicate was also observed (p = 0.084). Within this study we also report extreme variance in gene copy numbers between the study seasons. No consistent relationship could be determined for mic copy numbers mL-1 and 2-MIB (ng L-1). The findings from this study indicate that TIN:TP and NH4+:NO3- serve as good predictors for elevated geoA and mic, along with negative linear relationships observed for mean temperature and dissolved reactive silicate. Overall, our findings demonstrate the importance of nutrient concentrations, nutrient ratios and temperature for evidence based predictive capacity of taste and odour events in drinking water reservoirs.
