One of the most frequent conditions found in the oral cavity includes reactive lesions. Peripheral ossifying fibroma (POF) is a prevalent condition characterized by an overgrowth, originating from the gingival tissue, periodontal ligament, and periosteum. The condition manifests as a small mucosal nodule and can be difficult to accurately identify since it resembles other lesions. Chronic irritation and trauma are considered to be etiological agents. It is more prevalent in females and typically impacts the anterior region of the maxilla and mandible. The recommended therapy for POF involves surgical excision and eliminating any factors that may be causing irritation in the affected area. It can grow significantly if not surgically removed early. Treatment is necessary to prevent recurrence. It can be misdiagnosed due to overlapping features with other lesions. Correct biopsy technique and histopathological evaluation are crucial for accurate diagnosis. This case report illustrates the management of gingival overgrowth in an 18-year-old female patient after comprehensive clinical evaluation by using conventional surgical excision with the help of a scalpel. The final diagnosis of POF was confirmed using histopathologic evaluation. The treatment led to favorable outcomes in the patient regarding mastication, speech, and esthetics.

STUDY DESIGN: Experimental study utilizing with a standardized model (MASCIS Impactor) of Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) in Balb C mouse model with implantation of mononuclear stem cells derived from the human umbilical cord and placenta blood in the early chronic phase of SCI. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the nerve regeneration and motor functional recovery in Balb C mice with surgically induced paraplegia in response to the use of mononuclear stem cells, in early chronic phase (> 2 weeks and < 6 months), because there is yet potential of neuronal and functional recovery as the neuronal scar is not still completely established. METHODS: Forty-eight mice were randomly assigned to 6 groups of 8 animals. Group 1 received the stem cells 3 weeks after the trauma, and Group 2 received them six weeks later. In Group 3, saline solution was injected at the site of the lesion 3 weeks after the trauma, and in Group 4, 6 weeks later. Group 5 underwent only spinal cord injury and Group 6 underwent laminectomy only. The scales used for motor assessment were BMS and MFS for 12 weeks. RESULTS: The intervention groups showed statistically significant motor improvement. In the histopathological analysis, the intervention groups had a lower degree of injury (p < 0.05). Regarding axonal budding, the intervention groups showed increasing in axonal budding in the caudal portion (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The use of stem cells in mice in the chronic phase after 3 and 6 weeks of SCI brings functional and histopathological benefits to them.

The widespread presence of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic ecosystems has raised growing concerns among ecotoxicologists regarding their potential toxicity. This study explored the impacts of polylactic acid (PLA) MPs on the physiology and health of freshwater fish, Cirrhinus mrigala, by dietary exposure for 90 days. The experiment consisted of six groups: five treatment groups (0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2%, and 2.5% PLA-MP) and a control group (0% PLA-MP). Each group was comprised of fifteen fish, and the experiment was replicated three times. The exposure severity of PLA-MPs varied from low to high, with treatment levels ranging from 0.5% to 2.5% PLA-MPs, relative to the control group. This exposure significantly affected their growth performance. Additionally, the apparent digestibility of the SFM-based diet decreased with increasing PLA-MPs concentration. Exposure to PLA-MPs induced considerable changes in body composition, characterized by increased moisture and crude fat content and decreased ash content and crude protein. The blood profile, including MCHC, RBCs, Hb, PLT and PCV exhibited significant declines in the high treatment group (2.5% PLA-MPs), while MCH, WBCs and MCV showed notable increases. Furthermore, histopathological examination of the intestine revealed an increase in abnormalities in the intestine at 2.5% PLA-MPs level. The high treatment group (2.5% PLA-MPs) showed the lowest mineral content in the fish muscles. In summary, dietary exposure to PLA-MPs led to alterations in overall body performance across the treatment groups, ranging from low to high severity levels.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a primary malignancy of the liver, often arising in the context of chronic liver disease and cirrhosis. This case report describes the clinical presentation, diagnostic evaluation, and therapeutic intervention of a 72-year-old male with a long-standing history of alcohol use who presented with right hypochondrial pain. A 72-year-old male with a 20-year history of alcohol consumption presented with a one-month history of dull, aching pain in the right hypochondrium. Diagnostic imaging, including abdominal ultrasound and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT), revealed significant hepatomegaly with nodular and irregular liver margins, free fluid in the abdomen and pelvis, and multiple hypodense nodules in both liver lobes. One nodule in the right lobe exhibited characteristic imaging features of hepatocellular carcinoma, including peripheral enhancement on the arterial phase and washout on the delayed phase. Histopathological analysis of a biopsy from the suspicious nodule confirmed the diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma. The patient was diagnosed with hepatocellular carcinoma based on clinical, radiological, and histopathological findings. He was subsequently scheduled for radiofrequency tumor ablation. This case underscores the importance of comprehensive diagnostic imaging and histopathological evaluation in patients with liver cirrhosis and suspected HCC, particularly in those with a history of chronic alcohol use.

Dysbiosis plays an important role in the development of bacterial infections in the gastric mucosa, particularly Helicobacter pylori. The international guidelines for the treatment of H. pylori infections suggest standard triple therapy (STT). Nevertheless, because of the increasing resistance rates to clarithromycin, metronidazole has been widely considered in several countries. Unfortunately, the non-justified administration of antibiotics induces dysbiosis in the target organ. We characterized the gastric microbiota of patients diagnosed with follicular gastropathy and pangastropathy attributed to H. pylori infection, before and after the administration of STT with metronidazole. Dominant relative abundances of Cutibacterium were observed in pre-treatment patients, whereas H. pylori was observed at <11%, suggesting the multifactor property of the disease. The correlation of Cutibacterium acnes and H. pylori with gastric infectious diseases was also evaluated using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. The dominance of C. acnes over H. pylori was observed in gastritis, gastropathies, and non-significant histological alterations. None of the microorganisms were detected in the intestinal metaplasia. Post-treatment alterations revealed an increase in the relative abundances of Staphylococcus, Pseudomonas, and Klebsiella. Non-H. pylori gastrointestinal bacteria can be associated with the initiation and development of gastric diseases, such as pathobiont C. acnes.

The pancreas plays an important role in the homeostasis of zinc (Zn), a nutritionally essential metal. In several previous studies, Zn ions induced inflammatory changes in the exocrine pancreas; however, little is known about Zn complexes. In this study, we microscopically, immunohistochemically, and ultrastructurally examined pancreatic lesions in Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats induced by a 4-week repeated oral dose toxicity study of Zinc Maltol (ZM), a zinc (II) complex. ZM induces acinar atrophy and increases the number of duct-like structures. Immunohistochemistry revealed a decrease in the number of trypsin-positive cells, and an increase in the number of SOX9-positive cells. Interstitial fibrosis and macrophage infiltration also correlated with the degree of acinar atrophy. Electron microscopic evaluation revealed that the acinar cells that lost granules were surrounded by fibroblasts and collagen fibers. In conclusion, we provided a detailed description of ZM-induced pancreatic lesions in SD rats.

A retrospective study was carried out to investigate incidence, clinical signs and ultrasonographic findings of ovarian tumours in a population of dogs referred to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Perugia (Italy) and Anicura Tyrus Veterinary Clinic (Terni, Italy). The period of study ranged from January 2005 to December 2021. A total of 1910 dogs were affected by neoplasia but only 35 of them (1.8%), of different breeds and ages, were found to have ovarian tumours. Ultrasound of the ovaries was performed based on clinical signs; the diagnosis was achieved after ultrasound findings prompted ovariohysterectomy and ovarian pathologic evaluation In our study, the age of bitches affected by ovarian neoplasia ranged from 3 to 20 years (mean 9.6 ± 3.8). The histopathological findings of ovarian masses identified 16 granulosa cell tumours (GCT) (46%), 7 adenomas (20%), 5 adenocarcinomas (14%), 2 teratomas (6%), 1 leiomyoma (3%), 1 luteoma (3%), 1 tecoma (3%), 1 dysgerminoma (3%), and 1 haemangiosarcoma (3%). In particular, with respect to clinical signs, 69% of bitches showed abnormalities of estrus cycle (short interestral interval, persistent estrus, prolonged interestral interval). The other main clinical signs included abdominal distention, palpable abdominal mass, vulvovaginal discharge, polyuria/polydipsia, mammary masses. When present, the laboratory abnormalities were slight anemia and leucocytosis with neutrophilia. The tumours were ultrasonographically classified as mainly solid: 12/35 (34%) (1 adenoma, 4 adenocarcinomas, 1 dysgerminoma, 1 haemangiosarcoma, 1 leyomioma, 1 luteoma, 1 GCT, 1 tecoma, 1 teratoma); solid with cystic component 13/35 (37%) (9 GCT, 2 Adenomas, 1 adenocarcinoma, 1 teratoma); and mainly cystic 10/35 (29%) (6 GCTs, 4 adenomas). In our study, the ultrasound examination allowed us to suspect ovarian neoplasia in asymptomatic subjects referred for breeding management or for preventive health check. On the basis of our data, we proposed to perform a complete periodic examination of the reproductive system once a year from 6 years. Nevertheless, the presence of ovarian neoplasms found in young subjects, during breeding management, suggest including routine ultrasound examination of the reproductive tract.

BACKGROUND: Deep-seated fungal infections of the oral cavity present a diagnostic challenge as the clinical presentation is usually aggressive leading to misdiagnosis of malignancy. Nevertheless, the species of fungi responsible for such diseases in immunocompromised individuals are varied thus, further complicating the diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: Presented below is a case regarding the diagnosis and management of deep mycotic infection of the oral cavity caused by a fungus that very rarely causes disease in humans, the Verticillium species. CONCLUSIONS: The case highlights the fact that rare pathogens should also be considered in the differential diagnosis, especially in patients with debilitating conditions like uncontrolled diabetes. Likewise, histopathological evaluation and microbiological investigations are of paramount importance and remain the gold standard to reach a definitive diagnosis.

Berberine hydrochloride is a plant alkaloid with versatile medicinal applications, yet it has suffered from multiple limitations in its usage. Nonetheless, the acknowledged role of berberine in controlling seizures has fuelled the need to develop a nanosystem capable of delivering it safely and efficiently to the brain. Consequently, zein and hyaluronic acid were chosen for this purpose, and about twenty formulations with different preliminary factors were screened. Afterward, three promising formulations were loaded with berberine and characterized to select an optimum formulation for further in vivo inspection. The B2 formula of particle size of 297.2 nm ± 1.86 and % entrapment efficiency of 83.75% ± 1.39 has succeeded in the increment of the brain uptake of berberine. Moreover, compared to free berberine suspension, the severity of pilocarpine-induced status epilepticus in rats was depleted after the subcutaneous administration of B2. The hippocampal tissue of rats receiving B2 showed signs of reduced neuro-degeneration, remarkably lower expression levels of COX-2 and TNF-α, and enhanced antioxidant activity. Finally, the relative safety of the developed system was determined after searching for any sign of intoxication or behavioral changes. In conclusion, the developed berberine loaded composite nanoparticles successfully delivered berberine across the BBB securely to ameliorate the deteriorating impact of pilocarpine-induced epilepsy.

The species of Candida present good capability to form fungal biofilms on polymeric surfaces and are related to several human diseases since many of the employed medical devices are designed using polymers, especially high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Herein, HDPE films containing 0; 0.125; 0.250 or 0.500 wt% of 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (C16MImCl) or its analog 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium methanesulfonate (C16MImMeS) were obtained by melt blending and posteriorly mechanically pressurized into films. This approach resulted in more flexible and less brittle films, which impeded the Candida albicans, C. parapsilosis, and C. tropicalis biofilm formation on their surfaces. The employed imidazolium salt (IS) concentrations did not present any significant cytotoxic effect, and the good cell adhesion/proliferation of human mesenchymal stem cells on the HDPE-IS films indicated good biocompatibility. These outcomes combined with the absence of microscopic lesions in pig skin after contact with HDPE-IS films demonstrated their potential as biomaterials for the development of effective medical device tools that reduce the risk of fungal infections.

One of the most prevalent malignancies diagnosed today is cancer of the mouth or oral cancer. Compared to systemic malignancies like lung cancer, colon cancer, etc., oral cancer tends to get less attention from the general public. However, these lesions may be lethal if not treated, even if diagnosed early. Early diagnosis improves the prognosis for successful therapy. Delayed diagnosis is hypothesized to be a pivotal contributor to the dismal oral cancer survival rate over five years. The current standard of care for diagnosis and detection is based on clinical evaluation, the histological study of biopsy material, and genetic methods. There have been several advancements in the diagnostic technologies available to detect oral cancer at the initial phase. This study aims to dissect the cutting-edge methods for detecting oral cancer in its earliest stages.

Liver biopsy (LB) is the cornerstone in the management of patients with liver diseases. However, a lot of queries had emerged about its role following the end of the interferon era. The aim of this study was to re-evaluate the current role of LB in the diagnosis of liver diseases. All patients who had underwent LB at the Department of Hepatology, National Liver Institute, from January 2015 through December 2018 were recruited. Indications for LB, pathology reports and medical records of all cases were retrieved, reviewed and statistically analyzed. A total of 275 liver biopsies were collected, 191 males and 84 females with mean age 41.22 ± 13.36 years. Etiological diagnosis made by histopathological evaluation was 48 drug-induced liver injury (DILI), 42 nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), 34 chronic hepatitis B, or C with cholestasis, 29 autoimmune hepatitis, 34 primary sclerosing cholangitis, 13 primary biliary cholangitis, 7 autoimmune overlap syndrome, 13 active bilharziasis and 10 Wilson's disease. Minor number of cases was diagnosed by different other etiologies. Initial diagnosis was made by liver biopsy and confirmed by clinical response and laboratory findings. Liver biopsy is still considered as the gold standard diagnostic measure of different liver diseases representing an integral component of management decisions in hepatology.

Pulp Out, paste-contained jatropha sap, sidaguri roots, and melittin, has been studied to have potency used as an herbal-based devitalizing agent. Prior to clinical application, the toxicity of Pulp Out should be evaluated as it might leak from the cavity unintentionally and get into the digestive systems, which can cause either local or systemic effects. The present study aimed to evaluate the impact of Pulp Out application on periodontal and periapical tissue as well as acute toxicity in Wistar rats. The paste was inserted into the periapical tissue. After 7 days, the periapical tissue was isolated for histopathological evaluation. Pulp Out in an oral suspension of 50, 500 and 2500 mg/kg BW was administered. Autonomic nerve signs were observed intensively every 4 h as well as water and food consumption for 14 days. Biochemical, hematologic parameters and specific organs were evaluated. Therefore, considering the inflammatory lymphocyte cells, osteoblasts, and osteoclasts, Pulp Out is not toxic. The acute toxicity study revealed no treatment-related death was observed, indicating that LD50 is greater than 2500 mg/kg BW. No significant difference statistically either in body weight, water or food consumption as was observed in autonomic clinical signs of treated groups when compared to the control. Similarly, biochemical and hematologic properties showed no significant difference compared to control. Histopathological, slightly hydrophilic degenerative was observed in all organs. In conclusion, Pulp Out showed low acute toxicity in Wistar rats.

Pathological characteristics are well described in canine leishmaniosis (CanL). However, atypical lesions that can be confused with other pathologies or trigger unusual clinical signs are sporadically reported. Atypical lesions were observed during routine postmortem examination in three Leishmania-infected dogs and samples were taken for histopathological and immunohistochemical studies. Clinical signs, biochemical parameters, level of antibodies, and parasite detection by PCR were also evaluated. Atypical lesions were found in the peritoneal cavity, liver, and spleen. Splenomegalia and hepatomegalia were observed in all dogs. In addition, multifocal dark to white nodules of variable size were observed in the peritoneal cavity, liver, and spleen of one dog and in the spleen of the other two dogs. One dog presented diffuse irregular whitish lines with a threadlike appearance and another an intense fibrotic depression in the intermediate lobe. Microscopically, an intense granulomatous inflammation with abundant macrophages, a variable number of lymphocytes, and a low to moderate number of parasites was observed. This study represents the first description of granulomatous peritonitis associated with Leishmania in dogs. It also shows atypical macroscopic expression of hepatitis in CanL. In the absence of an adequate clinical history and laboratory analyses, certain lesions observed in CanL could admit alternative diagnoses.

The glass clover snail, Monacha cartusiana (M. cartusiana) is one of the most seriously impacting economic animal pests spreading across Egypt which inflicts severe damages to the agriculture. A green route is developed by deploying an abundant Rosemary plant leaves aqueous extract to synthesize ZnO and F-doped ZnO (F-ZnO) nanoparticles (NPs) that display high molluscicidal activities against the M. cartusiana land snails via leaf dipping and contact techniques. The effect of lethal concentrations, that kills 50% of exposed snails (LC50) value of the treatments, is examined on the activity of alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), enzymes, total protein (TP), total lipids (TL) and cholesterol level of snails, including the histopathological evaluation of the digestive gland and foot of M. Cartusiana. Their molluscicidal activity as poisonous baits under field conditions is also evaluated and compared to the recommended molluscicide, Neomyl. The results show that F- doping dramatically improves the snail control capability of ZnO NPs, and promotes a considerable increase in both ALT and AST enzymes with an enhancement of TL and Cholesterol levels, but a significant decrease in TP content and ALP activity in treated snails compared to the control group. The LC50 values are found to be 1381.55 and 2197.59 ppm using the leaf dipping for F-ZnO and ZnO, while 237.51 and 245.90 ppm can be achieved using the contact technique, respectively. The greenly synthesized F-ZnO and ZnO NPs induce severe histological alterations in the digestive gland and foot of M. cartusiana, including a complete destruction of the digestive tubules. The histological evaluation of the foot of M. cartusiana exposed to ZnO, shows a rupture of the epithelial layer of the foot sole, while F- ZnO NPs causes the folds of the foot becoming deeper and the rupture of epithelial layer. Our field experiments further demonstrate that F-ZnO achieves 60.08% reduction, while ZnO attains 56.39% diminution in snail population compared to the commercial, Neomyl (69.55%), exhibiting great potentials in controlling the harmful land snail populations.

Background: Although ulcerative proctitis (UP) and anal fissure (AF) are common anorectal diseases, there are no appropriate experimental models to screen the drugs intended for these conditions. In this context, existing experimental models mimicking these diseases were modified and the polyherbal formulation, HPLF-111624 was evaluated in these models. Objective: To establish animal model for UP and AF and to evaluate polyherbal formulation, HPLF-111624 in these disease models. Methods: An experimental model of UP was selected based on the modification of the ulcerative colitis model using different concentrations of acetic acid. The concentration used for induction were 2.5%, 5% and 10% v/v and different weights used to induce AF were 25 g, 50 g and 100 g, which were selected based on the severity of inflammation, fecal score, gross pathology, and histopathological evaluation. Furthermore, these animal models were used to evaluate the efficacy of HPLF-111624, a polyherbal formulation known to be beneficial in anal diseases. Results: Acetic acid at 5% produced typical pathological changes that resembled UP, with a significant increase in the fecal score, gross lesion, and histopathological changes. Similarly, among the three weights, physical injury with a 100 g weight produced significant changes in the histopathological score in the model of AF. Intervention with HPLF-111624 at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg b.wt., showed a reduction in the inflammatory cytokines and a significant improvement in the histopathological findings in both the conditions. Conclusion: The results showed that the modified experimental models for UP and AF resemble the human pathological conditions and are simple, versatile and may be used for screening drugs intended for these conditions. Intervention with HPLF-111624 was found to be effective in improving the pathological state of UP and AF.

As an emerging pacing technique, left bundle branch area pacing (LBBAP) has served as a physiological pacing modality that overcomes the limitations of His bundle pacing (HBP) or right ventricular pacing. Three patients with terminal heart failure who were waiting for heart transplantation and met the indications of pacemaker implantations received LBBAP. Symptoms were relieved and stabilized and eventually received heart transplantation. Diseased hearts from the recipients were dissected post-transplantation, and the direct visual of pacing lead locations in the interventricular septum were evaluated, and the histopathological examination around the lead was conducted for the first time in human. As a result, we found that the locations of LBBAP leads were matched with fluoroscopic views during the procedure and Masson's staining showed extensive fibrosis occur around the lead but did not result in high thresholds.

PURPOSE: In clinical use of low-level laser therapy for bone regeneration (LLLT), application protocol (dose, duration, and repetitions) has not been established. This study aimed to depict a reliable dosage of LLLT by evaluating the efficacy of different dosing of LLLT (diode) on the healing of rabbit cranial defects. METHODS: Critical size defects were prepared in calvarias of 26 New Zealand White Rabbits in such each animal containing both test and control groups. Test groups were irradiated with 4 Joule/cm2 (j/cm2), 6 j/cm2, and 8 j/cm2. The rabbits were subjected to six times of laser treatments in 10 days. At the end of the second week, 5 rabbits were sacrificed for histopathological and immunohistochemical analyses. At the 4th and 8th weeks, 20 rabbits (10 each) were sacrificed for micro-CT and histopathological analyses. RESULTS: Micro-CT evaluation revealed improved new bone formation in all test groups compared to the control group. 6 j/cm2 group demonstrated the highest bone formation. The highest bone morphogenic protein -2 levels were found in the 4 j/cm2 group. Osteocalcin expression was significantly higher in 4 j/cm2 group. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that LLLT have a positive effect on new bone formation. The high efficacy of doses of 4 j/cm2 and 6 j/cm2 is promising to promote early bone healing.

BACKGROUND: Burn hemangioma, also known as scalded pyogenic granuloma, is considered a variant of pyogenic granuloma, but unlike the classic type it presents with rapid progression. Most patients are infants and young children with a history of burns caused by liquids. OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to present all patients with burn hemangiomas treated at our institutions with a full clinical and histopathological assessment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This case series includes 34 cases that were treated during the period from 2016 to 2021. RESULTS: A total of 34 patients (16 female/18 male, mean age of 17.6 years) were included. Two age groups presented: infants and children (n = 22, age range 0.5-8 years, 10 female/12 male), and adults (n = 11, age range 25-44 years, 6 female/6 male). Lesions appeared 1-2 weeks following predominantly second-degree burns, and multiple lesions predominated in infants and children. The lesions evolved to large lesions within weeks, and these appeared to be either static or involute. The histopathology was compatible with hemangioma, rather than pyogenic granuloma. CONCLUSION: Burn hemangioma should be considered a new variant of hemangioma rather than a type of pyogenic granuloma that follows second-degree burns. They have many similarities with infantile hemangioma, both clinically and histopathologically.

INTRODUCTION: The nuclear features that are thought to be classic indicators of thyroid nodules are not fully observed in core needle biopsies (CNB). The aim of this study was to evaluate the histopathological differences between CNB samples and resection sections. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The haematoxylin and eosin-stained CNB and resection sections of thyroid nodules were retrospectively re-evaluated in terms of nuclear and architectural parameters. The evaluations were conducted by 2 pathologists. Statistical analysis was applied in 80 selected cases diagnosed as benign (n = 37) and papillary carcinoma/suspicious for papillary carcinoma (n = 43). RESULTS: The nuclear findings in the CNB were more subtle than in the resection sections. The nuclei were smaller (measurements of the nuclear areas, major axes, and minor axes in CNB and resection sections were 52.62 µm2, 9.89 µm, 6.75 µm, 129.18 µm2, 14.53 µm, and 10.79 µm, respectively). Hypochromia was detected in 46.5% of the papillary carcinoma cases. Grooves and pseudoinclusions were the other nuclear features that could be detected. However, nuclear contour irregularity was the most reliable finding that could predict papillary carcinoma diagnosis in the CNB sections (v: 0.82, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: We believe that the histopathological differences we found have an important place in diagnostics and should be emphasized, and new diagnostic algorithms should be developed.
