Sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) are highly profitable, contribute to food security, and their leaves rich in phytonutrients. This study examined the optimal leaf harvesting stage by harvesting newly formed leaves (leaves 1 to 5) to achieve the highest concentration of carotenoids, phenolic compounds, antioxidant properties and mineral content. Leaves of five purple-fleshed sweet potato genotypes '2019-11-2' and '2019-1-1', 'Purple-purple', and from the USA '08-21P' and '16-283P' were harvested based on tuber life cycle [vegetative 8 weeks after planting (VS-8WAP), tuber initiation (TIS-12WAP), and tuber maturation phases (TMS-16WAP)]. At the 8WAP stage, leaves of genotype '2019-11-2' had the highest concentrations of cyanidin-caffeoyl-sophoroside-glucoside (17.64 mg/kg), cyanidin-caffeoyl-feruloyl-sophoroside-glucoside (41.51 mg/kg), peonidin-caffeoyl-hydroxybenzoyl-sophoriside-glucoside (45.25 mg/kg), and peonidin caffeoyl-feruloyl-sophoriside-glucoside (24.47 mg/kg), as well as antioxidant scavenging activity. In contrast, 'Purple-purple' harvested at TIS-12WAP showed the highest concentration of caffeoylquinic acid derivatives. Zeaxanthin, lutein, all trans-ß-carotene, and cis-ß-carotene are the most abundant carotenoids in genotype '08-21P' at VS-8WAP. As a result, local genotypes '2019-11-2' harvested at 8WAP and 'Purple-purple' harvested at 12WAP are potential sources of anthocyanins and caffeoylquinic acid derivatives. Conversely, USA's genotype '08-21P' at the VS-8WAP stage is an excellent source of carotenoids. The leaves of USA's '08-21P' genotype and the local '2019-11-2' genotype at TMS-16WAP exhibited the highest content of Fe and Mn, respectively. The study identified the optimal leaf stage for consumption of leaves and for use as a functional ingredient.

Wild indigenous vegetables have recently been receiving attention due to their accessibility and potential to fight malnutrition. The current study investigated the nutritional profile of 10 selected wild indigenous vegetables, namely Asclepias multicaulis, Lepidium africanum, Erucastrum austroafricanum, Solanum nigrum, Sonchus dregeanus, Sonchus integrifolius, Sonchus nanus, Rorippa fluviatilis, Tribulus terrestris, and Urtica lobulata, consumed by the Basotho people of southern Africa. This was done by first compiling a comprehensive literature review to identify the knowledge gaps and further analysing the selected vegetables for mineral contents and proximate compositions using standard analytical procedures of AOAC. The literature survey revealed that 90 wild plants are used as vegetables by the Basotho people, and there are knowledge gaps on the nutritional value of many species. Mineral analyses of the wild vegetables showed that Asclepias multicaulis and Sonchus dregeanus are rich in minerals such as Al, Ca, K, Mg, Na, P, and S and can compete favourably with commercialised vegetables such as lettuce and spinach in terms of mineral components. Also, all the wild vegetables studied have more than 12% recommended caloric protein value except Tribulus terrestris (10.07%) and Lepidium africanum (11.32%). The crude fat content in Asclepias multicaulis, Lepidium africanum, Rorippa fluviatilis, Erucastrum austroafricanum, and Urtica lobulata fall within the range required for healthy living. The concentrations of cadmium, copper, and lead in all the vegetables studied are below the detection level, thus making them non-toxic and safe for consumption.

Wild Edible Plants (WEPs), namely Chaw (Solanum nigrum L.), Shutamodoroy (Vigna membranacea A. Rich), Entut (Dioscorea praehensilis Benth.), Gagut (Trilepisium madagascariense D.C.), and Tikawoch (Cleome gynandra L.), are naturally grown WEPs and are consumed by the Meinit cultural community in the Bench Maji zone of southwest Ethiopia. However, their nutritional and anti-nutritional compositions of these WEPs have not been documented. In this regard, the proximate, mineral and anti-nutrient contents of the edible portions of these WEPs were analyzed using standard food analysis methods. The nutritional analysis revealed that the WEPs contain valuable nutrients in the following ranges: protein (4.0-21.7%), fat (0.7-6.1%), fiber (8.9-22.3%), carbohydrates (38.1-83%) and energy (275-371.1 kcal/100 g). These WEPs were also rich in macro and micro minerals such as calcium (3.7-594.8 mg/100 g), potassium (440.6-1487.8 mg/100 g), sodium (174.9-277.4 mg/100 g), magnesium (68.2-588.1 mg/100 g), iron (0.8-38.5 mg/100 g), zinc (2.4-5.9 mg/100 g) and copper (0.1-0.5 mg/100 g). The phytate, condensed tannin, and oxalate content of WEPs varied from 8.6 to 307.3 mg/100 g, 5.8-329.0 mg/100 g, and 43.7-443.9 mg/100 g, respectively. The result indicated that these WEPs are rich sources of nutrients that could help combat nutrient deficiencies, particularly in rural communities. The results of this study can be used as baseline information for the nutraceuticals industry and community-based nutrition practitioners.

For sample preparation prior to mineral analysis, microwave digestion (~2 h) is quicker and requires lower acid volume as compared to dry (6-8 h) and wet digestion (4-5 h). However, microwave digestion had not yet been compared systematically with dry and wet digestion for different cheese matrices. In this work, the three digestion methods were compared for measuring major (Ca, K, Mg, Na and P) and trace minerals (Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn) in cheese samples using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The study involved nine different cheese samples with moisture content varying from 32 to 81% and a standard reference material (skim milk powder). For the standard reference material, the relative standard deviation was lowest for microwave digestion (0.2-3.7%) followed by dry (0.2-6.7%) and wet digestion (0.4-7.6%). Overall, for major minerals in cheese, strong correlation was observed between the microwave and the dry and wet digestion methods (R2 = 0.971-0.999), and Bland-Altman plots showed best method agreement (lowest bias), indicating the comparability of all three digestion methods. A lower correlation coefficient, higher limits of agreement and higher bias of minor minerals indicate possibilities of measurement error.

Increased environmental pollution, urbanization, and a wide variety of anthropogenic activities have led to the release of toxic pollutants into the environment, including heavy metals (HMs). It has been found that increasing concentrations of HMs lead to toxicity, mineral imbalances, and serious diseases, which are occurring more and more frequently. Therefore, testing has become imperative to detect these deficiencies in a timely manner. The detection of traces of HMs, especially toxic ones, in human tissues, various biological fluids, or hair is a complex, high-precision analysis that enables early diagnosis, addressing people under constant stress or exposed to a toxic environment; the test also targets people who have died in suspicious circumstances. Tissue mineral analysis (TMA) determines the concentration of toxic minerals/metals at the intracellular level and can therefore determine correlations between measured concentrations and imbalances in the body. Framing the already-published information on the topic, this review aimed to explore the toxicity of HMs to human health, the harmful effects of their accumulation, the advantages vs. the disadvantages of choosing different biological fluids/tissues/organs necessary for the quantitative measurement of HM in the human body, as well as the choice of the optimal method, correlated with the purpose of the analysis.

The use of hair samples to assess the mineral intake of horses under practical conditions has recently been attracting increased interest. The aims of this study were to compare mineral analysis results in equine mane hair between three commercial laboratories and to determine the relationship between the mineral intake and mineral content in mane hair. Four warmblood horses (14 ± 3 years) were included in the study. Horses were fed hay ad libitum and a commercial mineral supplement to meet nutrient requirements under maintenance conditions. Mane hair from the hairline was collected with a sample length of 2 to 3 cm according to the respective laboratory guidelines to monitor the feeding period of the last 1 to 2 months. Minerals in mane hair were analyzed by three commercial laboratories using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) or inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy and in feedstuffs using ICP-MS to calculate mineral intake. Hair mineral analysis showed that the results and their corresponding reference ranges widely varied among the three laboratories. The mean coefficient of variance ranged from a minimum of 10% for selenium (Se) to a maximum of 58% for iron (Fe). For example, Se supply (requirement, 1.17-1.28 mg/d; intake, 1.83 mg/d) was considered insufficient in all horses by two laboratories, whereas it was considered adequate by one laboratory. Intervariation of the same sample, as well as differences in reference ranges, was considerably high among the three laboratories. These results indicate that hair mineral analysis is not reliable for assessing mineral intake in horses.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to adverse experiences during pregnancy, such as a natural disaster, can modify development of the child with potential long-term consequences. Elemental hair analysis may provide useful indicators of cellular homeostasis and child health. The present study investigated (1) if flood-induced prenatal maternal stress is associated with altered hair elemental profiles in 4-year-old children, and (2) if hair elemental profiles are associated with behavioural outcomes in children. METHODS: Participants were 75 children (39 boys; 36 girls) whose mothers were exposed to varying levels of stress due to a natural disaster (2011 Queensland Flood, Australia) during pregnancy. At 4 years of age, language development, attention and internalizing and externalizing problems were assessed and scalp hair was collected. Hair was analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for 28 chemical elements. RESULTS: A significant curvilinear association was found between maternal objective hardship and copper levels in boys, as low and high maternal objective hardship levels were associated with the highest hair copper levels. Mediation analysis revealed that low levels of maternal objective hardship and high levels of copper were associated with lower vocabulary scores. Higher levels of maternal objective hardship were associated with higher magnesium levels, which in turn were associated with attention problems and aggression in boys. In girls, high and low maternal objective hardship levels were associated with high calcium/potassium ratios. CONCLUSION: Elemental hair analysis may provide a sensitive biomonitoring tool for early identification of health risks in vulnerable children.

Background: In Morocco, fava beans are widely used as a main meal or as an ingredient in various traditional recipes, in the form of fresh ripe seeds or dry seeds. In the past, the tender skin of bean pods was also used in certain specific dishes, thus diversifying the diet. However, the peels of the tender bean pods are currently less or not used and considered waste. In Moroccan, fava bean pods peels, traditionally used in food in the past, are today considered as waste. The valorization of fresh fava bean pods could revitalize the use of the specific dishes and diversify the diet. For this reason, the research aimed to assess the nutritional values and biological compounds of the whole fresh fava bean pods (Vicia faba L.). Objective: Evaluate the content of nutrients, total phenolic, flavonoids and tannin contents and antioxidant activity in different extracts of the tender pods of the fava bean (Vicia faba L.). Material and methods: The proximate composition and minerals were determined using AOAC methods. The total phenolic compounds by the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent, the total flavonoids were analyzed using aluminum chloride colorimetric method, the tannins by method of vanillin in an acidic medium and the antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH method. Results: The results show that the fresh fava bean pods have a moisture content of 87.31 ± 0.25%, ash 4.67 ± 1.03, and protein 29.11 ± 3.20 g/100 g. The legume samples also contain potassium (1946.8±4.61), phosphorus (483.8 ± 3.14), and calcium (399.6 ±2.25) mg/100 g of dry matter representing at last 40-50% of the RDI. The content of the different extracts of (Vicia faba L) varied from 49.5 to 594.4 mg GAE/ g for the total phenols, from 0.7 mg to 3.4 mg QE/g for flavonoids, and from 4.9 mg to 73.91 mg TAE/g dry weight for tannins. The evaluation of the antioxidant activity in the various extracts revealed a better activity in the methanolic extract (IC50=491.2 µg/mL) compared to others extracts: the MeOH/water extract (IC50=606.61 µg/mL), DCM/ MeOH extract (IC50 = 642.67 µg/mL) and DCM extract below of 50%. Conclusions: This study shows that fava bean pods, traditionally used in food, are rich in macro and micronutrients and bioactive substances, which demonstrates their potential contribution to human food and nutritional security.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of patient age (young or mature), anatomical location (shallow/deep and central/peripheral) and microscopic site (intertubular/peritubular) on dentine mineral density, distribution and composition. METHODS: Extracted posterior teeth from young (aged 19-20 years, N = 4) and mature (aged 54-77 years, N = 4) subjects were prepared to shallow and deep slices. The dentine surface elemental composition was investigated in a SEM using Backscattered Electron (BSE) micrographs, Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, and Integrated Mineral Analysis. Qualitative comparisons and quantitative measures using machine learning were used to analyse the BSE images. Quantitative outcomes were compared using quantile or linear regression models with bootstrapping to account for the multiple measures per sample. Subsequently, a Xenon Plasma Focussed Ion Beam Scanning Electron Microscopy (Xe PFIB-SEM) was used to mill large area (100 µm) cross-sections to investigate morphology through the dentine tubules using high resolution secondary electron micrographs. RESULTS: With age, dentine mineral composition remains stable, but density changes with anatomical location and microscopic site. Microscopically, accessory tubules spread into intertubular dentine (ITD) from the main tubule lumens. Within the lumens, mineral deposits form calcospherites in the young that eventually coalesce in mature tubules and branches. The mineral occlusion in mature dentine increases overall ITD density to reflect peritubular dentine (PTD) infiltrate. The ITD observed in micrographs remained consistent for age and observation plane to suggest tubule deposition affects overall dentine density. Mineral density depends on the relative distribution of PTD to ITD that varies with anatomical location. SIGNIFICANCE: Adhesive materials may interact differently within a tooth as well as in different age groups.

The present study investigated the antidiabetic and antioxidant capacity of hydromethanol extract from Parkia biglobosa stem bark (PBSBHM) in fructose-streptozotocin induced type 2 diabetic rats after 28 days of oral administration. Simultaneously, evaluated the phenolic profiles and mineral compositions of crude extract. Molecular docking analysis of protocatechuic acid, the most abundant phenolic acid with potential downstream partners protein kinase A (PKA), protein kinase C (PKC), and Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMK II), was investigated. The preliminary results showed that PBSBHM crude extract contained 225.2 ± 18.25 mg GAE/g of total phenolic and 99.28 ± 12.3 mg QE/g of total flavonoid. Both protocatechuic and gallic acids were identified as a prominent phenolic compound through HPLC analysis, while vanillic acid was not detected. High mineral composition of K, Mg, P, Ca while Mn and Cr as trace elements were found in PBSBHM by plasma optical emission spectroscopy. PBSBHM extracts showed a significant radical scavenging activity from a therapeutic point of view, a moderate antioxidant potential and improved glucose tolerance after 30 min of glucose loading. PBSBHM extracts significantly attenuated serum glucose level and glycosylated haemoglobin at the tested dosage. However, it elevated the hepatic hexokinase activity and glycogen level compared with the diabetic untreated rats. PBSBHM ameliorates the decreased activity of pancreatic superoxide dismutase, catalase and reduced glutathione but decreased the MDA level. Docking analysis of protocatechuic acid showed a moderate affinity for the target enzymes compared to the standard drugs. Our data showed that the stem bark extract of this botanical has antidiabetic potential and at least in part substantiates its traditional use in the management of diabetes, possibly due to the synergistic interactions of protocatechuic acid with other biologically active components.

The quality of chicken burgers reformulated by the partial replacement of meat by Mediterranean plant ingredients and enriched with peculiar amounts of n-3 PUFAs, Mg, Fe, Se, and folic acid, was evaluated in comparison to conventional chicken burgers. Specifically, two types of burger were developed, namely the "Sicilian burger"-based on cherry tomato and rosemary-and the "Mediterranean burger"-with basil leaves and thyme essential oil-every recipe being differentially functionalized according to the nutritional requirements of consumers, such as children, pregnant women and elderly. Mediterranean ingredients were responsible for different pH, color, and cooking loss between conventional and functional burgers. Except for n-3 PUFAs resulting poorly fortified, the functionalization with Mg, Fe, Se, and vitamin B9 was successful in all products. Considering the target consumer categories, the daily consumption of the functional burger may assure an intake of Mg, Fe, and Se equal, respectively, to 37.31-59.90%, 17.76-46.81%, and 27.20-50.05%, and a cover of vitamin B9 of 31.98-48.31% of the relative population reference intakes. Fortified products kept a good microbiological quality during 5 days of refrigerated storage, and, according to the sensorial descriptive analysis and the hedonic test, they showed a higher acceptability than conventional burgers.

Determination of geographical origin of honey is important to consumers to confirm authenticity. This study investigated the elemental fingerprint of 181 honey samples collected from apiary sites in six regions of North Island, New Zealand to determine if differences were observed due to region of collection or land use surrounding the hive (e.g. agricultural, rural, urban). Using principal component analysis, soil related elements (Ca, K, Mg, Mn, Na) provided 75.2% discrimination of samples in the first two principal components. Overall, low concentrations of heavy metals were observed; lead was present in close proximity to highly trafficked roads (28.1% of samples; 9.50-76.5 µg kg-1) and cadmium was primarily present in honey collected from agricultural land in the Waikato (<51.6 µg kg-1). The use of an elemental fingerprint of New Zealand honey may be advantageous to determine the geographical origin compared to honey produced from other countries.

The paper presents the manufacturing technology for a material obtained from glass fiber waste, quartz sand, and polyester binder, used for ornamental building plates. The composite has a cover surface that ensures protection of the material from environment attacks and a structural material that can be subjected to chemical degradation. The mechanical properties of the obtained material were experimentally investigated through compressive mechanical tests. To observe the material's behavior in contact with external agents (rain or acid rain, due to environmental pollution), analyses were performed in laboratory conditions. An investigation on the effects of chemical attack substances was conducted. SEM and macroscopic analyses were performed, and the surface roughness was determined for each sample area. The obtained results were statistically analyzed and showed that there is no significant difference between the surface roughness for treated and untreated samples. Furthermore, the surfaces were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and mineralogical optical microscopy in polarized light with crossed nicols. It was observed that rainwater does not affect the plate structure even if the plates are used in high-pollution environments. The material is suitable for exterior building walls from the point of view of chemical attack and resistance.

In this work, two varieties of Anacyclus pyrethrum (L.) including Anacyclus pyrethrum var. pyrethrum (L.) and Anacyclus pyrethrum var. depressus (Ball) Maire were evaluated for their mineral and chemical compositions, total phenolic and flavonoid contents, and antimicrobial and antioxidant activities using hydroalcoholic extracts from their different parts (leaves, capitula, roots, and seeds). The phytochemical and mineral compositions were carried out using standard methods. The antioxidant activity was determined using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl), ABTS (2,2-azino-bis 3-ethylbenzothiazolin-6-sulfonic acid), and FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) tests. The antimicrobial activity was assayed using the agar diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentration, and minimum bactericidal concentration methods. The results of the chemical analysis showed that both varieties contained interesting mineral and chemical compositions with potentially active compounds; among them, N-isobutyl-2,4-heptadiene-6-monoynamide and cinnamic acid were detected in the Anacyclus pyrethrum var. pyrethrum (L.) only while thiadiazolo [5,4-d] pyrimidin-7-amine and N-isobutyl-2,4-undecadiene-8,10-diynamide compounds were limited to the Anacyclus pyrethrum var. depressus (Ball) Maire. In vitro antioxidant and antimicrobial activities of the two varieties demonstrated that the different parts had prominent antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The principal component analysis (PCA) showed great similarity in the activity of the leaves, capitula, and seeds of both plants and a high difference in roots. Anacyclus pyrethrum var. pyrethrum roots were characterized by a high content in phenols and flavonoids and better antibacterial activities compared to Anacyclus pyrethrum var. depressus (Ball) Maire roots, which were characterized by better antioxidant activities. From this study, it can be concluded that the two varieties of Anacyclus pyrethrum (L.) showed promising mineral and chemical compositions with antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

The main aim of this research was to identify the mineralogical, morphological, and chemical characteristics of solid particles emitted by vehicular traffic and deposited on special monitoring plots located on the roadside of five countries with different climatic conditions and traffic structure. Within 24 months of exposure, the composition of the matrix used at the monitoring plots changed. Percentage quartz content decreased in all locations, and due to the input from local sources, the share of other mineral phases increased. In some locations, an increase in the share of mineral phases associated with local parent rock and soil erosion was noted (e.g. Helsinki, Böblingen). In other places, material associated with abrasion of the road surface was characteristic (e.g. Gliwice, Opole). The composition of pollutants accumulated at all the monitoring plots was varied, however the common feature was the presence of technogenic magnetic particles in the matrix after exposure. Analyses showed that numerous irregular, angular particles of iron oxides with porous surface, which are carriers for a number of metals and metalloids were present in the samples. Angular iron oxides containing zinc, chromium, and copper are usually considered as non-exhaust traffic emissions. Another type of iron oxides particles found in the samples were magnetic spherules related to exhaust emissions (smaller spherules, < 20 µm). Study of results confirmed the effectiveness of the testing method for roadside pollution monitoring related to currently emitted solid particles accumulated on matrix of known mineral composition.

Understanding the impact of earthquakes on subaqueous environments is key for submarine paleoseismological investigations seeking to provide long-term records of past earthquakes. For this purpose, event deposits (e.g., turbidites) are, among others, identified and stratigraphically correlated over broad areas to test for synchronous occurrence of gravity flows. Hence, detailed spatiotemporal petrographic and geochemical fingerprints of such deposits are required to advance the knowledge about sediment source and the underlying remobilization processes induced by past earthquakes. In this study, we develop for the first time in paleoseismology a multivariate statistical approach using X-ray fluorescence core scanning, magnetic susceptibility, and wet bulk density data that allow to test, confirm, and enhance the previous visual and lithostratigraphic correlation across two isolated basins in the central Japan Trench. The statistical correlation is further confirmed by petrographic heavy grain analysis of the turbidites and additionally combined with our novel erosion model based on previously reported bulk organic carbon 14C dates. We find surficial sediment remobilization, a process whereby strong seismic shaking remobilizes the uppermost few centimeters of surficial slope sediment, to be a predominant remobilization process, which partly initiates deeper sediment remobilization downslope during strong earthquakes at the Japan Trench. These findings shed new light on source-to-sink transport processes in hadal trenches during earthquakes and help to assess the completeness of the turbidite paleoseismic record. Our results further suggest that shallow-buried tephra on the slope might significantly influence sediment remobilization and the geochemical and petrographic fingerprints of the resulting event deposits.

Objective:Citrullus vulgaris seeds are the most concealed oil seeds consist of vital therapeutic potential. Apart from nutritional and therapeutic indices, these seeds contain numerous anti-nutritional components.Method: Hence, solid-state fermentation was used as an alternative biotechnological contrivance to enhance the nutritional and functional properties of seeds. Fungal strain Aspergillus awamori was used for solid-state fermentation and uncoated watermelon seeds were used as a substrate for 144h. The range of bulk density was obtained from 0.39 to 0.72 g/cm3, however, fermentation significantly decreased the bulk density of the seed flours. Based upon soluble nitrogen content (79.81%) and functional properties, fermented seed samples of 120h was selected for FTIR analysis and in-vitro mineral bioavailability through Caco-2 cells.Results: FTIR spectrum confirmed the presence of amide groups (1200-1100 cm-1) of the protein.Conclusion: Fermented seeds also unveiled significantly (p<0.05) higher iron (61.24%), zinc (62.36%), and calcium (61.89%) bioavailability and this significant increase in bioavailability confirmed significantly (p<0.05) higher cellular mineral uptake.

In this work, the chemical and physical profile of 5 different bread types (Multicereal bread, Bavaria wheat bread, Wholemeal bread, Rye and Oat bread) were analysed in depth, namely the nutritional profile, individual fatty acids and soluble sugars through GC-FID and HPLC-RI, respectively, as well as the mineral profile, including micro and macroelements. Furthermore, a texture profile analysis was carried out in addition to the measurement of the crust colour. Each bread type showed a distinct profile, with Wholemeal and Bavaria having the lowest calories, and Oat the highest. Multicereal showed the highest amount of unsaturated fatty acids, while Wholemeal and Rye scored the least sodium amounts. The hardest bread was Rye and the easiest to chew were Oat and Bavaria breads. The latter was also the one with the darkest crumb of all the analysed breads. This work shows that bread can be baked to meet the needs and particularities of various kinds of diets.

Soil is commonly analyzed to provide evidence because soil particles adhere to almost everything that may be of forensic interest. Particles derived from soil can be quantitatively analyzed by scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (SEM-EDS). We developed a semi-automated SEM-EDS method for analyzing soil minerals. Soil was analyzed using the SEM-EDS automated particle analysis program, then the mineral species were identified from their chemical components. Chi-squared tests were used to discriminate between different minerals, and these tests were also applied to soil samples. The method put samples with the same parent population into the same group and discriminated between samples with different parent populations even when 26 particles were analyzed. The method successfully identified most soil samples with different parent populations as different. The results proved that the method could be used in forensic cases and provide new insights into the forensic analysis of soil samples.

Kaolin is most often used as traditional raw material in ceramic industry. The purpose of the study was to obtain understanding of the structural and chemical variability of cordierite ceramics influenced by chemical and mineralogical properties of six raw kaolins taken from different localities when they are applied in ceramics mixtures with vermiculite and sintered up to 1300 °C. The X-ray diffraction and simultaneous thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis were used to identify and characterize crystalline mineral phases and the course of reactions during the heating. The percentages of the crystalline and non-crystalline phases were newly determined by recalculation of the bulk chemical analyses of kaolins and cordierite ceramics using Chemical Quantitative Mineral Analysis (CQMA) method. Varying amounts of minerals in kaolins: kaolinite from 73.3 to 85.0, muscovite from 4.2 to 9.9, and quartz from 6.0 to 19.5 (mass %) affected amount of cordierite/indialite from 75.2 to 85.1, enstatite from 5.8 to 8.9 (when are calculated as their maximal possible percentages), and non-crystalline phases from 8.8 to 15.1 (mass %) in cordierite ceramics. Regression analysis predicted high relationship between quantity of: (a) kaolinite in kaolins and crystalline cordierite and (b) quartz in kaolins and non-crystalline phases in the ceramics. The migration of potassium from muscovite into the cordierite structure, melting point and crystallization of cordierite/indialite phases and pore size variability in relation to impurity of kaolins are documented and discussed.
