Objective: This study aimed to investigate the association between antimony (Sb) exposure and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 751 adolescents aged 12-19 years was conducted via the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2013-2016). Survey-weighted linear regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) analyses were applied to evaluate the relationship of urinary Sb exposure with HbA1c. Results: A significant relationship was observed between urinary Sb concentrations and HbA1c levels (percent change: 0.93; 95% CI: 0.42, 1.45) after full adjustment. After converting urinary Sb levels to a categorical variable by tertiles (T1-T3), the highest quantile was associated with a significant increase in HbA1c (percent change: 1.45; 95% CI: 0.38, 2.53) compared to T1. The RCS models showed a monotonically increasing relationship of urinary Sb with HbA1c. Subgroup analyses revealed a sex-specific relationship between urinary Sb exposure and HbA1c with a significant positive association in males and a non-significant positive association in females. Sensitivity analyses further confirmed the relationship between urinary Sb and HbA1c, even after excluding participants who were overweight or obese (percent change: 1.58%, 95% CI: 0.88, 2.28) and those with serum cotinine levels ≥ 1 ng/mL (percent change: 1.14%, 95% CI: 0.49, 1.80). Conclusion: Our findings indicated that increased Sb exposure may correlate with higher HbA1c levels, especially in male adolescents. More studies are needed to further explore and validate the potential mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Diet may influence susceptibility of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection by affecting inflammation and immunity. However, the association between HPV infection and the inflammatory potential of diet has not been investigated. The research aimed to examine the correlation between HPV status and the dietary inflammatory index (DII®). METHODS: We utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2003-2016 to investigate the correlation between DII and HPV status among 9,256 women aged 18-59 years. DII scores were calculated based on 24-hour dietary recall interviews. The association between HPV status and DII was analyzed using weighted logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS). RESULTS: Women with HPV infection exhibited higher DII scores than those without HPV infection. An increased likelihood of HPV infection was found to be significantly associated with higher DII scores (OR = 1.05, 95% CI: 1.01-1.09, P = 0.021), after full multivariate adjustment. Compared with the lowest tertile of DII scores, the ORs (95% CIs) for HPV infection were 1.20 (1.01, 1.42) and 1.27 (1.07, 1.51) for the second and third tertiles, respectively (P for trend = 0.006). RCS analysis showed a U-shaped relationship between DII and HPV infection, with a breakpoint identified at 0.13. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that a pro-inflammatory diet is associated with an increased likelihood of HPV infection among women in the United States. Dietary interventions to reduce inflammation may help prevent HPV infection and related diseases.

Background: Renal stone is a highly prevalent life-long disease with a high recurrence rate. Chronic bowel diseases, including chronic gastrointestinal symptoms (chronic constipation or chronic diarrhea), are common gastrointestinal problems. We aimed to evaluate the associations of chronic constipation and chronic diarrhea with renal stones. Methods: This large-scale, cross-sectional study was performed within participants (≥20 years old) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2007 to 2010. Logistic regression and sensitivity analyses were conducted to clarify the association between chronic bowel diseases and renal stones. Results: A total of 8,067 participants aged ≥20 years were included. The prevalence of renal stones is 9.14%. Chronic diarrhea was positively related to the risk of renal stones [odds ratio (OR) =1.681, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.212 to 2.330, P=0.004] after adjusting for all covariates. In participants with body mass index (BMI) over 30 kg/m2, chronic constipation was correlated with kidney stones in fully adjusted model 2 (OR =2.142, 95% CI: 1.389 to 3.303, P=0.004). Conclusions: Our findings provide evidence that chronic diarrhea is associated with an increased risk of renal stones. Chronic constipation is positively related to the risk of renal stones in participants with BMI over 30 kg/m2. Health care should focus more on bowel health status for the prevention of related diseases. More prospective cohort studies are needed.

Background: Excessive saturated fatty acids (SFAs) are known to be detrimental to human health. Although the majority of research and dietary guidelines have focused on the intake of SFAs, there has been limited attention to the relationship between circulating SFA levels and hormonal regulation, such as that of thyroid hormones. Methods: To explore potential associations, we conducted an investigation with 579 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2012. Subgroup analyses and multivariable linear regression models were used to estimate the relationships between eleven distinct SFA concentrations and various thyroid parameters. Results: For 579 adults, subgroup analysis of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) revealed significant differences in nine specific SFAs and the total SFA levels (all p < 0.05). Furthermore, multivariable linear regression analysis identified positive correlations between certain SFAs and various parameters, including TSH, total triiodothyronine (TT3), free triiodothyronine (FT3), thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb), thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb), thyroglobulin (Tg), the ratio of FT3 to free thyroxine (FT4) (FT3/FT4), and the thyrotroph T4 resistance index (TT4RI). Conversely, negative correlations were observed between certain SFAs and total thyroxine (TT4), FT4, the ratio of FT3/TT3, and the thyroid feedback quantile-based index (TFQI) (all p < 0.05). Conclusion: These findings collectively suggest associations between SFAs and thyroid parameters, highlighting the need for future studies to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of these interactions.

Background: The uric acid-to-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (UHR) has emerged as a novel indicator of inflammatory and metabolic status. This study aims to examine the association between UHR and bone mineral density (BMD), as well as the risk of osteoporosis, in individuals aged ≥50 years. Methods: This cross-sectional study used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, focusing on participants aged ≥50 years. Femoral neck BMD (FN-BMD) was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Linear regression models were employed to examine the association between UHR and FN-BMD. Additionally, generalised additive models were used to assess the nonlinear relationship between UHR and FN-BMD. Logistic regression models were employed to evaluate the association between UHR and the risk of osteoporosis. Results: Finally, the study included 2963 adults with a mean age of 64.16 ± 8.92 years. Linear regression analyses revealed a positive association between UHR and FN-BMD, regardless of covariate adjustments. Logistic regression analyses indicated that elevated UHR was associated with a reduced risk of osteoporosis with or without covariate adjustments. Subgroup analyses revealed that the positive association between UHR and BMD was significant in individuals aged ≥65 years but not in those aged 50 to 64 years. Interaction analyses by age showed significant differences after adjusting for all covariates. Conclusions: Clinicians should be vigilant regarding the potential risk of osteoporosis in individuals with a low UHR. UHR might serve as a risk indicator for osteoporosis.

The relationship between magnesium deficiency and metabolic dysfunction associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the association between the magnesium depletion score (MDS) and the risk of MASLD, as well as explore potential underlying mechanisms. Data from 12,024 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005-2018 were analyzed. MDS was calculated based on the use of diuretics and proton pump inhibitors, kidney function, and alcohol consumption. MASLD was defined using the fatty liver index. Logistic regression, restricted cubic spline analysis, and mediation analyses were conducted to evaluate the association between MDS and MASLD and to identify potential mediators. A higher MDS was significantly associated with an increased risk of MASLD (OR = 2.00, 95% CI [1.47, 2.74] for MDS 3 vs. 0). A dose-response relationship between MDS and MASLD risk was observed. Neutrophils, albumin, and white blood cells partially were identified as partial mediators of the association, with albumin exhibiting the highest mediating effect (14.05%). Elevated MDS is significantly associated with an increased risk of MASLD in U.S. adults. Inflammation and albumin may serve as potential mediators of this relationship. These findings underscore the importance of addressing magnesium deficiency in the prevention and management of MASLD.

Background: The HALP score, comprising hemoglobin, albumin, lymphocyte, and platelet levels, serves as an indicator of both nutritional and inflammatory status. However, its correlation with all-cause and cause-specific mortality among cancer survivors remains unclear. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the relationship between HALP scores and mortality outcomes in this population. Method: We extracted cohort data spanning ten cycles (1999-2018) from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Mortality rates, determined using the National Death Index (NDI) as of December 31, 2019, were assessed. Weighted multivariate logistic regression analyzed the association between HALP scores and cancer prevalence. Kaplan-Meier analyses and weighted multivariate-adjusted Cox analyses investigated the link between HALP scores and all-cause and cause-specific mortality in cancer survivors. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis was employed to assess nonlinear relationships. Furthermore, multi-parametric subgroup analyses were conducted to ensure the robustness of the results. Results: Our study included 41,231 participants, of whom 3,786 were cancer survivors (prevalence: 9.5%). Over a median follow-up of 91 months (range: 51-136), we observed 1,339 deaths, including 397 from cancer, 368 from cardio-cerebrovascular disease, and 105 from respiratory disease. Elevated HALP scores showed a consistent association with reduced cancer incidence (P for trend <0.001). In multivariable-adjusted Cox regression analyses, HALP scores were significantly inversely associated with all-cause mortality, cancer mortality, cardio-cerebrovascular disease mortality, and respiratory disease mortality in cancer survivors (P for trend < 0.05). Nonlinear relationships between HALP scores and all-cause and cause-specific mortality in cancer survivors were evident through RCS regression modeling (P for nonlinearity < 0.01). Kaplan-Meier analyses demonstrated that higher HALP scores were indicative of a poorer prognosis. Conclusion: Our findings indicate a notable inverse correlation between HALP scores and both all-cause and cause-specific mortality among cancer survivors.

Background: While several studies have noted a higher SII correlates with multiple diseases, research on the association between SII and cataract remains limited. Our cross-sectional study seeks to examine the association between SII and cataract among outpatient US adults. Methods: This compensatory cross-sectional study utilized NHANES data from 1999 to 2008 cycles, conducting sample-weighted multivariate logistic regression and stratified analysis of subgroups. Results: Among 11,205 adults included in this study (5,571 [46.2%] male; 5,634 [53.8%] female), 2,131 (15.2%) had cataract and 9,074 (84.8%) did not have cataract. A fully adjusted model showed that SII higher than 500 × 109/L was positively correlated with an increased risk of cataracts among women (OR, 1.27; 95% CI, 1.02-1.59) (p = 0.036). However, no difference was found in the men subgroup, and there was no significant interaction between SII and sex. Conclusion: Our results indicated that a SII higher than 500 × 109/L was positively correlated with an increased risk of cataracts in women. This study is the first to specifically investigate the impact of a high SII on cataract risk in outpatient adults in the United States. By effectively addressing inflammation, it is possible to mitigate cataract progression and significantly enhance patient outcomes.

Purpose: The prevalence of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is high, and there are many complications. Few studies have reported the relationship between OSA and kidney stones. The purpose of this study is to explore whether people at risk of OSA will increase the risk of kidney stones. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, and information was collected through the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted from 2015 to 2018. Multiple logistic regression analyses were employed to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the link between obstructive sleep apnea and the presence of kidney stones. Additionally, to assess causality and reduce observational biases, five distinct two-sample Mendelian randomization techniques were applied. Results: Following the adjustment for relevant confounders, findings indicated a statistically significant correlation between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and higher prevalence of kidney stones (OR = 1.29; 95% CI: 1.00-1.66). Additionally, using the inverse-variance weighted approach in Mendelian randomization, results suggested a genetic predisposition to OSA might be causally linked to an elevated risk of developing kidney stones (OR: 1.00221, 95% CI 1.00056-1.00387). Conclusion: OSA promotes the formation of kidney stones, and the treatment and management of OSA can improve or mitigate the occurrence of kidney stones.

Introduction: Chronic inflammation is a recognized independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), highlighting the need for reliable inflammatory indicator to predict CVDs. As an inflammatory indicator which has been proved to have predictive value for prognosis of CVDs, neutrophil percentage-to-albumin ratio (NPAR) has obtained increasing attention, but further research is needed to confirm the relationship with mortality in the general population. Method: This prospective cohort study included 21,317 individuals who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 to 2010, where baseline characteristics and NPAR level were extracted. Data for CVD and all-cause mortality were acquired by linking the cohort database with the National Death Index through December 31, 2019. We employed restricted cubic spline analyses to examine the nonlinear association. Weighted Kaplan-Meier curves with log-rank tests were conducted to access cumulative survival differences across different NPAR results. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to compute hazard ratios and 95% CIs. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) curves were used to compare predictive value of NPAR with systemic immune inflammation index (SII) and neutrophils percent. Results: In this cohort study, during 270,014 person-years of follow-up, 4,074 all-cause deaths and 1,116 CVD-cause deaths were documented. NPAR levels exhibited significant nonlinear associations with both CVD-cause (P = 0.018 for nonlinearity) and all-cause mortality (P < 0.001 for nonlinearity). Participants in the highest NPAR tertile had a significantly increased risk of all-cause mortality (HR: 1.46, 95% CI: 1.33-1.61) and CVD-cause mortality (HR: 1.54, 95% CI: 1.32-1.80) compared to those in the lowest tertile in the fully adjusted model, while no association was detected for individuals in the middle tertile. Further ROC analysis confirmed that NPAR had higher predictive value than neutrophil percent segment and SII. Conclusions: Elevated NPAR level was significantly associated with an increased risk of all-cause and CVD-cause mortality in general population. The high predictive value of NPAR, combined with the easy-to-calculate property, suggests that its potential as a novel inflammatory indicator is worthy of further investigation.

Purpose: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver disease. Phthalates have been suggested to influence the development of NAFLD due to their endocrine-disrupting properties, but studies based on nationally representative populations are insufficient, and existing studies seem to have reached conflicting conclusions. Due to changes in legislation, the use of traditional phthalates has gradually decreased, and the phthalates substitutes is getting more attention. This study aims to delve deeper into how the choice of diagnostic approach influences observed correlations and concern about more alternatives of phthalates, thereby offering more precise references for the prevention and treatment of NAFLD. Methods: A cohort of 641 participants, sourced from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2017-2018 database, was evaluated for NAFLD using three diagnostic methods: the Hepatic Steatosis Index (HSI), the US Fatty Liver Indicator (US.FLI), and Vibration Controlled Transient Elastography (VCTE). The urinary metabolite concentrations of Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), Di-isodecyl phthalate (DIDP), Di-isononyl phthalate (DINP), Di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), Di-isobutyl phthalate (DIBP), Di-ethyl phthalate (DEP) and Di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP) were detected. The association between NAFLD and urinary phthalate metabolites was evaluated through univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses, considering different concentration gradients of urinary phthalates. Results: Univariate logistic regression analysis found significant correlations between NAFLD and specific urinary phthalate metabolites, such as Mono-(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate (MEOHP), Mono-(2-ethyl-5-hydroxyhexyl) phthalate (MEHHP), Mono-2-ethyl-5-carboxypentyl phthalate (MECPP), and Mono-(carboxyisoctyl) phthalate (MCiOP), across different diagnostic criteria. In a multivariate logistic regression analysis adjusting only for demographic data, MEOHP (OR = 3.26, 95% CI = 1.19-8.94, p = 0.029), MEHHP (OR = 3.98, 95% CI = 1.43-11.1, p = 0.016), MECPP (OR = 3.52, 95% CI = 1.01-12.2, p = 0.049), and MCiOP (OR = 4.55, 95% CI = 1.93-10.7, p = 0.005) were positively related to NAFLD defined by HSI and VCTE. The correlation strength varied with the concentration of phthalates, indicating a potential dose-response relationship. Adjusting for all covariates in multivariate logistic regression, only MCiOP (OR = 4.22, 95% CI = 1.10-16.2, p = 0.044), as an oxidative metabolite of DINP, remained significantly associated with NAFLD under the VCTE criterion, suggesting its potential role as a risk factor for NAFLD. Conclusion: This research highlights a significant association between DINP and NAFLD. These findings underscore the need for further investigation into the role of the phthalates substitutes in the pathogenesis of NAFLD and the importance of considering different diagnostic criteria in research.

OBJECTIVES: There is some debate about the link between vitamin C and depressive risk. This study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and Mendelian randomization (MR) methodology to investigate the association between the two. METHODS: We obtained serum vitamin C levels through laboratory data and determined the intake of vitamin C through a 24-hour dietary recall method on the first day from NHANES 2017 to 2018. Assessment of depressive risk was employed by the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). The association between serum vitamin C levels and depressive risk was examined using logistic regression. Furthermore, the research utilized a two-sample MR methodology to investigate the potential causal connection between vitamin C and depressive risk. RESULTS: Three thousand four hundred and thirty-four participants aged 20+ with serum vitamin C levels and depressive risk data was included. Among the participants, 18.7% had low serum vitamin C levels and 25.2% had self-reported depressive risk. Serum vitamin C levels were associated with depressive risk [OR 1.64, (95% CI: 1.36-1.97), P < 0.01], which remained significant [OR 1.32, (95% CI: 1.08-1.61), P < 0.01] after adjustments. Distinct genetic SNPs were identified for serum vitamin C levels and depressive risk, allowing detailed analysis. No additional influences were observed between genetic variations. IVW and MR Egger analysis showed a non-causal association between vitamin C levels and depressive risk (All P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings of the nationally representative survey revealed a strong correlation between serum levels, intake as a supplement or medication of vitamin C and depressive risk, however, without a unidirectional causal association.

Background: The aim of this study is to evaluate the association between triglyceride glucose-waist height ratio (TyG-WHtR) index and the prevalence of gallstone disease (GSD), alongside the age at first gallstone surgery among adult populations within the United States. Methods: We screened participants using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Logistic regression analysis, generalized additive modeling, smoothed curve fitting, and subgroup analysis were employed to assess the association between the TyG-WHtR index, prevalence of GSD, and the age at initial gallstone surgical intervention. Results: In this study, 3,728 participants were enrolled, among whom 395 individuals reported a prior history of GSD. The association between the TyG-WHtR index and the prevalence of GSD demonstrated a non-linear, positive association. After adjusting for all potential confounders, for each incremental unit rise in the TyG-WHtR index, there was a 47% escalation in the prevalence of GSD (OR = 1.47, 95% CI: 1.29, 1.68). Subgroup analyses indicated a more pronounced association between the TyG-WHtR index and the prevalence of GSD among individuals aged 20-80 years, females, non-Hispanic white population, non-Hispanic black population, other racial groups, and non-diabetic cohorts. Additionally, this study identified that the TyG-WHtR index may be negatively correlated with age at first surgical treatment of gallstones. Conclusion: An elevated TyG-WHtR index demonstrates a positive association with the prevalence of GSD. However, more prospective studies are needed to validate our findings.

Background: The relationship between the albumin-to-globulin ratio (AGR) and depression is not well understood. This analysis aims to investigate the relationship between AGR in conjunction with depression in U.S. adults. Methods: This study analyzed information from 31,363 individuals collected by NHANES during the years 2005 to 2018. The PHQ-9 scale was employed to gauge depression, where a score of 10 or above signified depression. Weighted multivariable logistic modeling along with smooth curve fitting were applied to explore the AGR-depression connection. To confirm our findings, we carried out sensitivity analyses, subgroup analyses, and interaction tests. Results: After adjusting for confounding variables, a higher AGR is associated with a lower risk of depression (OR = 0.61, 95% CI: 0.47-0.79). Dividing AGR into quartiles revealed that participants in the highest quartile (Q4) of AGR had a markedly lower risk of depression than those in the lowest quartile (Q1) (OR = 0.64, 95% CI: 0.53-0.77). Using smooth curve fitting, we suggested a possible linear inverse association connecting AGR with depression. Further subgroup and sensitivity analyses supported these findings, although factors such as diabetes and hypertension might influence the relationship. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that elevated AGR levels correlate with a lower risk of depression. The findings suggest AGR as a potential biomarker for depression screening and prevention. Further studies are required to determine causality and clarify the mechanisms between AGR and depression.

Objective: This study aims to investigate the relationship between the lipid accumulation product (LAP) index and total femur bone mineral density (BMD), while also examining the mediating role of the poverty-income ratio (PIR). Methods: Using the most recent data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2009 to 2020, multivariate logistic regression models were employed in this study to investigate the relationship between the LAP index and total femur BMD. Saturation effects and potential non-linear associations were examined using a smooth curve-fitting approach to determine saturation levels. Interaction tests and subgroup analyses were also performed. Additionally, a mediation analysis was conducted to explore the mediating role of PIR. Results: Three thousand two hundred and twenty three participants aged 20 years or older were recruited for this study. Multivariate regression analysis demonstrated a greater total femur BMD in individuals with a high LAP index. Additionally, analysis of the saturation effect and smooth curve fitting identified a clear saturation effect between the LAP index and total femur BMD. A saturation value of 16.05 was determined when investigating the relationship between the LAP index and total femur BMD. Subgroup analysis revealed no significant interaction effects after adjusting for covariates. Moreover, mediation analysis indicated that the LAP index had a substantial direct effect on total femur BMD (p < 0.0001), with PIR partially mediating this relationship (1.115%, p = 0.0280). Conclusion: The results of this investigation demonstrated a saturation effect between the LAP index and total femur BMD, which may have been mediated by PIR.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to explore the association between flavonoids intake and chronic low back pain (CLBP). Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Dietary flavonoids intake was assessed using a two-day recall questionnaire on dietary intake. CLBP was defined based of self-reported question. Weighted univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were performed to evaluate the relationship between flavonoids intake and CLBP. Additionally, subgroup analyses were conducted based on age, sedentary behavior time, arthritis, depression, and sleep disorder. Results: A total of 3,136 adults were included, and 460 participants developed CLBP. After adjusting confounders, compared with the lowest total flavonoids intake tertile (reference group), flavonoids intake with highest tertile (>170 mg) was associated with reduced odds of CLBP [odds ratio (OR) =0.74, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.57-0.95]. This relationship of flavonoids intake with CLBP remained statistically significant among participants aged ≥45 years (OR = 0.52, 95%CI: 0.35-0.76), with sedentary behavior time of >3 h (OR = 0.60, 95%CI: 0.41-0.86), with arthritis (OR = 0.51, 95%CI: 0.29-0.90), depression (OR = 0.48, 95%CI: 0.24-0.98), and sleep disorder (OR = 0.27, 95%CI: 0.12-0.60). Conclusion: Higher flavonoids intake was found to be negatively associated with the likelihood of CLBP. For the general adult population, consuming foods rich in flavonoids may be linked to a reduced risk of CLBP.

Phthalates (PAEs) are common environmental endocrine disruptors and environmental bone poisons that can reduce bone mineral density (BMD). The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the concentration of PAE metabolites in urine is related to BMD in many parts of adult bones. We examined a series of cross-sectional data of male (n = 1835) and female (n = 1756) participants aged 18 to 59 years old in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2011 to 2018 and measured urine PAE metabolites and dual-energy X-ray absorption to determine BMD (total body, lumbar spine, and pelvis). We used linear regression to test the correlation between a single phthalate biomarker and BMD. After adjusting all confounding variables, MEHP was positively correlated with BMD of total body, lumbar spine and pelvis, and BMD levels of the total body, lumbar spine and pelvis decreased with the increase of MECPP concentration. We used the restricted cubic spline function to test the nonlinear correlation between PAE biomarkers and BMD. The results show that urinary PAE metabolites have a nonlinear relationship with total body BMD, lumbar spine BMD, and pelvic BMD. With the increase in the PAE concentration, the BMD level first increased and then decreased, showing an inverted U-shaped trend (P < 0.05). Gender stratification also shows the same related trend. PAEs may be related to the BMD of adults. When the concentration of PAEs increases to a certain threshold, it will lead to a significant decrease in BMD.

BACKGROUND: The triglyceride glucose (TyG) index, defined as Ln [fasting triglyceride (mg/dL) × fasting glucose (mg/dL)/2], provides insights into overall metabolic status. However, the association between the TyG index and gout has not been investigated. Therefore, this study explored the correlation between the TyG index and gout. METHODS: Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, which was conducted from 2007 to 2018, this study investigated the relationship between the TyG index and gout. Demographic data and potential risk factors were analyzed and compared using t tests for continuous data and chi-square tests for categorical data. Logistic regression and subgroup analysis were performed to examine the association between the TyG index and gout. RESULTS: A total of 14,924 participants were enrolled, among whom 726 (4.86%) were diagnosed with gout. Without controlling for any covariates, a significant positive correlation was observed between an elevated TyG index and increased risk of gout, with an odds ratio (OR) of 2.07 and a 95% confidence interval (CI) ranging from 1.76 to 2.43. After full adjustment, this association remained statistically significant, with an adjusted OR of 1.43 and a 95% CI from 1.14 to 1.80. Subgroup analyses revealed significant interactions, particularly for females (OR = 2.55; 95% CI: 2.00-3.26), individuals with no military service history (OR = 2.15; 95% CI: 1.66-2.43), and those without diabetes (OR = 2.00; 95% CI: 1.64-2.43). CONCLUSION: A positive correlation was observed between the TyG index and gout. Consequently, further large-scale prospective studies are warranted for a comprehensive analysis of the role of the TyG index in gout.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have reported associations between individual nutrients or specific foods and the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). However, the relationship between overall dietary quality, specifically the alternative Mediterranean diet (aMED) score, and AMD remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between the aMED score, as an indicator of overall diet quality, and AMD in the Korean population. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using nationally representative samples of older adults aged ≥ 65 years (895 men and 1,191 women) from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2017-2018). Food intake and the aMED score were estimated using 24-h recall. AMD was diagnosed by an ophthalmologist based on fundus photography. The associations of aMED score tertiles with AMD were determined using odds ratios (ORs) from multivariate logistic regressions. RESULTS: Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed a significantly negative association between the aMED score and AMD (adjusted ORs = 0.58; 95% confidence interval = 0.39-0.88; p-trend = 0.021) in older men after adjusting for confounding factors such as age, body mass index, family monthly income, current smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, chronic disease status, and energy intake. Notably, this association was exclusively observed in men, and no significant association was observed between the aMED score and AMD in women (adjusted OR = 0.88; 95% CI = 0.61-1.29; p-trend = 0.691). CONCLUSIONS: This study's findings suggest that a high aMED score may be associated with a reduced risk of AMD in older men. Future studies with larger sample sizes and a prospective or interventional design are required to enhance current understanding regarding the association between diet quality and AMD.

Introduction: Previous studies have indicated that exposure to heavy metals related to bone health is primarily limited to some common harmful metals, and the impact of lead has not been fully understood. This study aims to explore the relationship between urine lead exposure and bone density. Methods: 1,310 adults were included from the NHANES database (2015-2018), and through generalized linear regression analysis and constrained cubic spline models, the association between lead levels and total bone density as well as lumbar spine bone density was explored. The study also examined the impact of combined exposure to lead and cadmium on bone density. Results and conclusions: Urinary lead levels were significantly negatively correlated with total bone mineral density (ß: -0.015; 95%CI: -0.024, -0.007) and lumbar spine bone mineral density (ß: -0.019; 95%CI: -0.031, -0.006). Compared to the lowest three quartiles of lead levels, the adjusted odds ratios for T3 changes in total bone mineral density and lumbar spine bone mineral density were 0.974 (95%CI: 0.959, 0.990) and 0.967 (95%CI: 0.943, 0.991), indicating a significant negative trend. Further analysis with constrained cubic spline models revealed a non-linear decreasing relationship between urinary lead and total bone mineral density as well as lumbar spine bone mineral density. Stratified analyses suggested that the relationship between urinary lead levels and bone mineral density might be significantly influenced by age, while gender showed no significant impact on the relationship. Moreover, combined exposure to lead and cadmium was found to be associated with decreased bone mineral density, emphasizing the potential synergistic effects between lead and cadmium on bone health. However, the specific mechanisms of lead and its effects on different populations require further comprehensive research. This study provides valuable insights for further exploration and development of relevant public health policies.
