Objetivo: investigar a percepção do peso corporal e as dificuldades encontradas pelas pessoas com deficiência visual na aquisição, na preparação e no consumo dos alimentos. Metodologia: estudo observacional transversal, com adultos e idosos com deficiência visual em Pelotas/RS, realizado no período de abril a maio de 2023. Foi utilizado um questionário composto de 42 itens. Os dados coletados foram analisados por análise descritiva e analítica, e apresentados como média ± desvio padrão ou percentual. Resultados: a amostra contou com 20 pessoas, predominantemente do sexo feminino e idosas. Em relação ao consumo alimentar, 50% dos participantes consomem feijão, 75% frutas e hortaliças, 50% bebidas adoçadas, biscoitos recheados e doces. Referente à percepção do peso corporal, percebeu-se que a maior parte do grupo sente que está acima do peso adequado e se sentem "insatisfeitos(as)". Sobre as dificuldades encontradas, 85% dos participantes relataram dificuldade extrema para identificar a validade dos alimentos, 70% para comprar alimentos frescos e perecíveis e 40% para usar a faca para cortar e descascar os alimentos. Conclusão: verificou-se que a maior parte do grupo sente que está acima do peso adequado e estão "insatisfeitos(as)" em relação ao peso corporal. Além disso, dependem de outra pessoa para escolher os alimentos a serem comprados, saber o prazo de validade, preparar alimentos que precisam ser porcionados, servir refeições no prato, cortar carnes, descascar vegetais e frutas, utilizar faca, entre outros. Esta dependência pode influenciar diretamente no seu consumo alimentar quando essas pessoas se encontram sozinhas, optando por consumir alimentos industrializados de fácil preparo ou prontos.


Objective: to investigate the perception of body weight and the difficulties encountered by people with visual impairments in acquiring, preparing and consuming food. Methodology: cross-sectional observational study, with adults and elderly people with visual impairment in Pelotas/RS, carried out from April to May 2023. A questionnaire composed of 42 items was used. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical analysis, and presented as mean ± standard deviation or percentage. Results: the sample included 20 people, predominantly female and elderly. Regarding food consumption, 50% of participants consume beans, 75% fruits and vegetables, 50% sweetened drinks, stuffed cookies and sweets. Regarding the perception of body weight, it was noticed that the majority of the group feels that they are overweight and feel "dissatisfied". Regarding the difficulties encountered, 85% of participants reported extreme difficulty in identifying the expiration date of food, 70% in purchasing fresh and perishable foods and 40% in using a knife to cut and peel food. Conclusion: it was found that the majority of the group feels that they are overweight and are "dissatisfied" with their body weight. Furthermore, they depend on someone else to choose the food to be purchased, know the expiration date, prepare food that needs to be portioned, serve meals on the plate, cut meat, peel vegetables and fruits, use a knife, among others. This dependence can directly influence their food consumption when these people are alone, choosing to consume easily prepared or ready-made processed foods.

Background: This study aimed to identify plasma lipoproteins and small metabolites associated with high risk of malnutrition during intensive care unit (ICU) stay in patients with severe injuries. Methods: This observational prospective exploratory study was conducted at two level-1 trauma centers in the Netherlands. Adult patients (aged ≥18 years) who were admitted to the ICU for more than 48 h between July 2018 and April 2022 owing to severe injuries (polytrauma, as defined by Injury Severity Scores of ≥16) caused by blunt trauma were eligible for inclusion. Partial least squares discriminant analysis was used to analyze the relationship of 112 lipoprotein-related components and 23 small metabolites with the risk of malnutrition (modified Nutrition Risk in Critically Ill score). Malnutrition was diagnosed based on Subjective Global Assessment scores. The relationship of lipoprotein properties and small metabolite concentrations with malnutrition (during ICU admission) was evaluated using mixed effects logistic regression. Results: Overall, 51 patients were included. Lower (very) low-density lipoprotein ([V]LDL) (free) cholesterol and phospholipid levels, low particle number, and higher levels of LDL triglycerides were associated with a higher risk of malnutrition (variable importance in projection [VIP] value >1.5). Low levels of most (V)LDL and intermediate-density lipoprotein subfractions and high levels of high-density lipoprotein Apo-A1 were associated with the diagnosis of malnutrition (VIP value >1.5). Increased levels of dimethyl sulfone, trimethylamine N-oxide, creatinine, N, N-dimethylglycine, and pyruvic acid and decreased levels of creatine, methionine, and acetoacetic acid were also indicative of malnutrition (VIP value >1.5). Overall, 14 lipoproteins and 1 small metabolite were significantly associated with a high risk of malnutrition during ICU admission (P <0.05); however, the association did not persist after correcting the false discovery rate (P=0.35 for all). Conclusion: Increased triglyceride in several lipoprotein subfractions and decreased levels of other lipoprotein subfraction lipids and several small metabolites (involved in the homocysteine cycle, ketone body formation, and muscle metabolism) may be indicative of malnutrition risk. Following validation in larger cohorts, these indicators may guide institution of preventive nutritional measures in patients admitted to the ICU with severe injuries.

INTRODUCTION: Malnutrition in children and adolescents is a global issue particularly in low- and middle-income countries, while behavioural problems are becoming a growing public health concern in the area of child and adolescent mental health, with very few studies examining their association in preadolescence. This study aimed to assess the epidemiological relationship between malnutrition and behavioural problems in preadolescence. METHODS: A school based, cross-sectional survey was conducted in Karachi, Pakistan. Total 660, 11- to 12-year-old preadolescents were selected from a middle-class, coeducational school chain. Sociodemographic questionnaires and an officially adapted version of Youth Self-Report Form (YSR), which is the child and adolescent reported version of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), were used to collect data, along with anthropometric assessments following the WHO protocol. RESULTS: Thin and stunted preadolescents had significantly higher odds of internalizing problems (AOR = 2.05, p = 0.003 and AOR = 2.09, p = 0.039, respectively) than normal ones. Overnutrition was not associated with any behavioural issues. According to the Composite Index of Anthropometric Failure, 40% of preadolescents had at least one type of malnutrition and among them about 3% had co-occurring malnutrition (stunted and thin or overweight). They significantly had higher risk of being associated with the internalizing problems (AOR 2.92, p = 0.027). The effect was considerably higher than that associated with stunted or thin only, highlighting the cumulative impact of the co-occurring malnutrition on the internalizing problems. CONCLUSION: Our study concludes that overnutrition and undernutrition are prevalent in preadolescents, with significant association of undernutrition with internalizing problems. Moreover, our study is the first that reports that the co-occurrence of malnutrition is significantly associated with increased risk of internalizing problems. This study highlights the importance of the link between physical and mental health and emphasizes the need for holistic interventions and programmes for addressing preadolescents' issues.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the nutritional status of children and adolescents with celiac disease (CD) in Kuwait and investigate the nutritional deficiencies and sociodemographic factors associated with growth stunting in this population. METHODS: This case-control study included 77 CD patients aged 3-18 years diagnosed with CD using IgA anti-tissue transglutaminase and duodenal biopsy and 33 healthy controls. Nutritional status was evaluated based on demographic and clinical characteristics, anthropometric measurements, and biochemical parameters. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were used to determine the association between CD and growth stunting. RESULTS: Approximately one-third (31%) of children with CD had stunted growth, 20.8% had a low body mass index for their age, and 5.2% had both growth stunting and wasting. Children with CD had higher odds of iron-deficiency anemia, vitamin D deficiency, anemia, and lower socioeconomic status. They were also younger and had decreased serum levels of vitamin D compared to the controls. These factors were all significantly associated with an increased risk of CD, collectively explaining over 50% of the risk. For growth stunting, lower education status among mothers, family income, and serum ferritin were identified as risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: A significant proportion of children and adolescents with CD had malnutrition, overt deficiencies, and impaired growth despite coherence with a gluten-free diet. RECOMMENDATION: Routine monitoring and targeted nutritional interventions are recommended for children and adolescents with CD to address malnutrition and growth stunting. Addressing socioeconomic disparities and enhancing maternal education may also help mitigate the risk factors.

Background/Objectives: Geriatric hip fracture patients have an increased risk of malnutrition. Proper nutritional supply in the perioperative period is very important for their recovery. Oral nutritional supplements (ONSs) are recommended in geriatric hip fracture patients to improve dietary intake and prevent complications. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of postoperative ONSs after total hip arthroplasty in geriatric hip fracture patients. Methods: A retrospective study of elderly patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty for hip fracture was conducted. Data from patients who received ONSs postoperatively until hospital discharge (ONS group, n = 69) were compared with patients who did not receive ONSs (control group, n = 168). Laboratory test results, including serum protein and albumin levels, length of hospital stay, and the incidence of postoperative medical complications of the two groups, were analyzed. Results: Preoperative serum protein and albumin levels were significantly higher in the control group (p = 0.002 and p = 0.010, respectively). However, the degree of decline for both protein and albumin levels was significantly less in the ONS group (p < 0.001 for both). Serum albumin levels were significantly higher in the ONS group at postoperative two-week follow-up (p = 0.006). The length of hospital stay was shorter in the ONS group (p < 0.001). The incidence of postoperative delirium was significantly higher in the control group (p = 0.007). Conclusions: In geriatric hip fracture patients, postoperative ONSs can improve postoperative nutritional status, shorten the length of hospital stay, and reduce the incidence of postoperative delirium.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Breast cancer (BC) is frequently linked with obesity, metabolic syndrome, and sarcopenia. Therefore, measuring or accurately estimating resting energy expenditure (REE) is crucial for tailoring nutritional needs, managing weight and prevent under- or over-nutrition. We aimed to measure and compare REE between women with BC and a matched control group. Moreover, the prediction accuracy of selected formulas was evaluated. METHODS: Women aged ≥18 years with newly diagnosis of BC (stage 0-III) and body mass index (BMI) ≤ 30 kg/m2 were included in this cross-sectional analysis. Anthropometry, indirect calorimetry, and bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) were performed. Patients with BC data were compared to healthy women with similar age and BMI range. Measured REE (mREE) was compared against 15 predictive equations. Agreement between methods was evaluated using Bland-Altman analysis. RESULTS: We included 106 women with BC (age 49.9 ± 11.1 years and BMI 24.5 ± 2.8 kg/m2) and 75 women as control group. There were no differences in age, anthropometry, and BIA variables between groups, except for percentage fat mass. Measured REE values, alone and adjusted for fat-free mass (FFM) and age, were higher in patients with BC compared to controls (+4.3 % and +6.1 %, respectively). Regarding REE prediction, most of the selected equations underestimated mREE. Precision varied widely, with the two Marra equations showing the highest agreement (73 % and 74.5 %) along with the Müller equation (74 %), however, the wide limit of agreement range indicates substantial variability. CONCLUSIONS: Women with early-stage BC exhibited higher mREE compared to controls, albeit its clinical significance is unknown. None of the selected predictive equations provided accurate and precise REE estimates in this group. Although the Marra equation displayed the highest agreement, further studies are needed to evaluate REE variability and its prediction in women with BC.

BACKGROUND: Obesity has increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. It is the leading risk factor for obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). The relationship between obesity-OSA and vascular disease seems clear. There is no consensus on whether CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) treatment prevents vascular events. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of comorbidity and obesity on the risk of vascular events in patients with OSA treated with CPAP. METHOD: This study was a prospective study of historical cohorts of adult patients with OSA and CPAP. The sample was 3017 patients. Descriptive, survival (Kaplan-Meier) and Cox regression analyses were performed, calculating crude and adjusted association relationships to explain the risk of vascular events. RESULTS: A total of 1726 patients were obese, 782 were diabetics, and 1800 were hypertensive. The mean adherence was 6.2 (±1.8 h/day), and the mean follow-up time was 2603 days (±953.3). In the COX regression analysis, the event-related variables were baseline age (HR: 1.025: 1.012-1.037; p < 0.001), pre-treatment vascular event (HR; 2.530: 1.959-3.266; p < 0.001), hypertension (HR; 1.871: 1.187-2.672; p = 0.005) and abbreviated Charlson comorbidity index (HR; 1.289: 1.100-1.510; p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: The occurrence of vascular events in OSA patients on CPAP treatment is related to hypertension, having a vascular event before treatment, age at the start of CPAP use and abbreviated Charlson comorbidity index.

INTRODUCTION: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a highly prevalent disease characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms; the latter include constipation, which is considered a prodromal symptom. On the other hand, sarcopenia, polypharmacy, and malnutrition due to deficits are common in PD and lead to poorer health and quality of life. OBJECTIVE: to associate constipation and use of levodopa with nutritional status, sarcopenia, duration and stage of the disease, and polypharmacy in individuals with PD. MATERIALS AND METHODS: analytical cross-sectional observational study where an online survey was applied to 161 people suffering from PD. RESULTS: a significant association is observed between constipation and BMI (p = 0.022), as well as between the use of levodopa with BMI (p = 0.049) and polypharmacy (p = 0.046). On the other hand, there is a relationship between the average time of PD diagnosis and constipation (p = 0.0047). Finally, there is a relationship between SARC-F score applied to those over 60 years of age (p = 0.0446) and the use of levodopa. Having sarcopenia, being overweight, and having had the disease for less than five years is associated with a higher probability of experiencing constipation, according to the logistic regression analysis (p > 0.005). CONCLUSION: nutritional assessment and subsequent follow-up is of vital importance to avoid complications that could be associated with levodopa use, constipation, and sarcopenia.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition is common in older patients with chronic heart failure (HF) and often accompanies a deterioration of their condition. The Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score is used as an objective indicator to evaluate nutritional status, but relevant research in this area is limited. This study aimed to report the prevalence, clinical correlates, and outcomes of malnutrition in elder patients hospitalized with chronic HF. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 165 eligible patients admitted to the Department of Cardiology at Huadong Hospital from January 2021 to December 2022. Patients were categorized based on their CONUT score into three groups: normal nutrition status, mild risk of malnutrition, and moderate to severe risk of malnutrition. The study examined the nutritional status of this population and its relationship with clinical outcomes. RESULTS: Findings revealed that malnutrition affected 82% of the older patients, with 28% experiencing moderate to severe risk. Poor nutritional scores were significantly associated with prolonged hospital stay, increased in-hospital mortality and all-cause mortality during readmissions within one year (P < 0.05). The multivariable analysis indicated that moderate to severe malnutrition (CONUT score of 5-12) was significantly associated with a heightened risk of prolonged hospitalization (aOR: 9.17, 95%CI: 2.02-41.7). CONCLUSIONS: Malnutrition, as determined by the CONUT score, is a common issue among HF patients. Utilizing the CONUT score upon admission can effectively predict the potential for prolonged hospital stays.

BACKGROUND: Malnutrition and sarcopenia significantly increase the risk of intra-hospital delirium, particularly among older adults. Given the potential correlation between calf circumference (CC) and these conditions, CC emerges as a promising predisposing factor for delirium. This study aims to investigate the independent association between delirium and anthropometric parameters, focusing on evaluating CC's predictive capacity for intra-hospital delirium risk. Additionally, it aims to compare CC's predictive performance with the widely used Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), while also considering potential gender disparities. METHODS: This is a retrospective study which enrolled patients aged ≥ 65 years from September 2021 to March 2022 at the Padova Hospital (Italy). Physical characteristics, intra-hospital delirium incidence, and body composition were assessed. Sarcopenia was diagnosed using the 2019 European Consensus criteria. RESULTS: Among 207 subjects, delirium affected 19% of patients. CC showed a significant association with intra-hospital delirium among the analyzed anthropometric parameters. ROC curves indicated that CC's predictive capacity for delirium onset was comparable to MNA (p = 0.98), particularly in women. In a multivariable logistic regression model, female gender and higher cognitive and CC scores emerged as protective factors against delirium onset, with each unit increase in CC associated with a 24% reduction in the odds of delirium. Conversely, sarcopenia did not significantly influence delirium onset. CONCLUSIONS: CC shows promise as a predisposing factor for intra-hospital delirium, similar to MNA, albeit with significant gender differences. CC could serve as a valuable tool for assessing delirium risk among female patients. Further validation of these findings is necessary through larger-scale studies.

Background Adolescents are increasingly facing nutrition-related issues such as overweight, obesity, and underweight, and eating patterns may significantly contribute to these issues. So, this study aims to assess the nutritional status and eating patterns of female secondary school students in Kirkuk City, Iraq.  Methods A descriptive cross-sectional study design was applied, which took place between January 13 and May 30, 2024. The convenience non-probability sampling method was used to select 525 female secondary students in six female government secondary schools. Interview techniques and a structured questionnaire were used to collect data. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 27.0 (Released 2020; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States), was used for the data analysis. Results The mean age of the participants was 15.66 years old (SD 1.56). The finding revealed that 84 (16%) of secondary school female students were underweight, 100 (19%) of them were overweight, and 22 (4%) were obese. On the other hand, 423 (80.6%) of them reported eating snacks between meals, 497 (94%) reported eating fast food, and 378 (72%) reported skipping meals. The chi-squared test concludes that eating fast food and consuming energy drinks show significant associations with weight status, with a p-value less than 0.05.  Conclusion A quarter of the female secondary school students were overweight or obese, and about one-sixth of them were underweight. Most of them either had snacks between meals, frequently ate fast food, or skipped meals. For these reasons, it is crucial to implement a school-based nutrition program in Iraqi schools.

Elderly patients who undergo pancreaticoduodenectomy (PPPD) or distal pancreatectomy (DP) experience not only a reduction in protein intake but also a decrease in protease secretion, leading to impaired protein digestion and absorption. This increases the risk of malnutrition and creates a dual burden of sarcopenia. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial examined the impact of protein supplements on the nutritional status and quality of life (QoL) of elderly patients after PPPD and DP surgeries. For six weeks, the case group (CG; n = 23) consumed protein supplements containing 18 g of protein daily, while the placebo group (PG; n = 18) consumed a placebo with the same amount of carbohydrate. In elderly patients where protein digestion and intake were compromised, the CG showed significantly higher protein intake (77.3 ± 5.3 g vs. 56.7 ± 6.0 g, p = 0.049), improved QoL, better nutritional status, and faster walking speed compared to the PG. Protein intake was positively correlated with muscle mass and phase angle. Protein supplementation may not only increase protein intake but also improve clinical outcomes such as walking speed, nutritional status, and QoL in elderly post-surgical patients at high risk of sarcopenia. Further studies are needed to determine the optimal dosage and long-term effects.

The study aimed to ascertain a relationship between agricultural status, socioeconomic factors, and nutrition of farm families. The study was conducted in selected villages in the West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya, using Stratified Random Sampling (St. RS). Using pretested interview schedules, we collected primary data from respondents in 2020 and 2021, focusing on socioeconomic variables, body mass index, and income from agriculture and related sectors. The data was analysed using correlation analyses and separate combined regression estimates for each year and month were obtained. Results from the study indicate that agricultural income significantly influenced nutritional status (p < 0.05) and household income growth was also found significant. The region's agricultural production of cereals, pulses, and vegetables was insufficient, as was the production of meat and meat products, milk, and milk products. Hence, expenditure towards purchasing the above food groups from the market was found to be significant (p < 0.05). Therefore, the markets near the mainland especially in the hilly region play a crucial role in the nutritional pathway of rural farm families.

Background: Malnutrition harms treatment outcomes, QoL, and survival in lung cancer patients. Effective dietary counseling can improve nutrition, but few randomized controlled trials have focused on lung cancer patients. The objective of this study was to determine if dietary counseling improves nutritional and treatment outcomes when compared to routine care. Methods: This open-label parallel RCT was conducted at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital in Thailand. The investigators used computer-generated blocked randomization to assign patients to dietary counseling by a nutritionist or routine care. The nutritionist sessions occurred before treatment, with follow-ups at 3-4 weeks and 12 weeks. The primary outcome was the mean percentage change in the body weight of patients at 12 weeks. Secondary outcomes included changes in the BMI, nutrition score, QoL, serum albumin level, lymphocyte count, energy and protein intake, treatment response, PFS, and OS. Results: Between April 2020 and May 2022, after completing recruitment, 80 lung cancer patients were randomized: 43 to dietary counseling and 37 to routine care. The dietary counseling group showed significant benefits, with smaller decreases in body weight at 3-4 weeks (-0.8% vs. -2.6%, p = 0.05) and 12 weeks (-1.1% vs. -4.3%, p = 0.05). They also had higher energy and protein intake levels and better treatment response rates. The secondary outcomes and significant adverse events did not differ significantly between the groups. Conclusions: Dietary counseling helps to maintain body weight, maintain dietary intake, and enhance treatment responses in lung cancer patients. Although not all nutritional markers or survival outcomes were affected, these findings highlight the importance of early nutritional interventions.

BACKGROUND: The cross-sectional area of skeletal muscles at the level of the third lumbar vertebra (L3) measured from computed tomography (CT) images is an established imaging biomarker used to assess patients' nutritional status. With the increasing prevalence of low-dose CT scans in clinical practice, accurate and automated skeletal muscle segmentation at the L3 level in low-dose CT images has become an issue to address. This study proposed a lightweight algorithm for automated segmentation of skeletal muscles at the L3 level in low-dose CT images. METHODS: This study included 57 patients with rectal cancer, with both low-dose plain and contrast-enhanced pelvic CT image series acquired using a radiotherapy CT scanner. A training set of 30 randomly selected patients was used to develop a lightweight segmentation algorithm, and the other 27 patients were used as the test set. A radiologist selected the most representative axial CT image at the L3 level for both the image series for all the patients, and three groups of observers manually annotated the skeletal muscles in the 54 CT images of the test set as the gold standard. The performance of the proposed algorithm was evaluated in terms of the Dice similarity coefficient (DSC), precision, recall, 95th percentile of the Hausdorff distance (HD95), and average surface distance (ASD). The running time of the proposed algorithm was recorded. An open source deep learning-based AutoMATICA algorithm was compared with the proposed algorithm. The inter-observer variations were also used as the reference. RESULTS: The DSC, precision, recall, HD95, ASD, and running time were 93.2 ± 1.9% (mean ± standard deviation), 96.7 ± 2.9%, 90.0 ± 2.9%, 4.8 ± 1.3 mm, 0.8 ± 0.2 mm, and 303 ± 43 ms (on CPU) for the proposed algorithm, and 94.1 ± 4.1%, 92.7 ± 5.5%, 95.7 ± 4.0%, 7.4 ± 5.7 mm, 0.9 ± 0.6 mm, and 448 ± 40 ms (on GPU) for AutoMATICA, respectively. The differences between the proposed algorithm and the inter-observer reference were 4.7%, 1.2%, 7.9%, 3.2 mm, and 0.6 mm, respectively, for the averaged DSC, precision, recall, HD95, and ASD. CONCLUSION: The proposed algorithm can be used to segment skeletal muscles at the L3 level in either the plain or enhanced low-dose CT images.

Purpose: For neonates admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), appropriate nutritional assessment and intervention are important for adequate growth. In this study, we aimed to determine whether there were changes in the nutritional supply and growth status of premature infants hospitalized in the NICU after the introduction of the Nutrition support team (NST). Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed premature infants admitted to the NICU for over 14 days. The average daily calorie, protein, and fat supply at 1 and 2 weeks after birth were compared before and after NST, and growth was evaluated by changes in length, weight, and head circumference z-scores at birth and 28 days after birth. Results: A total of 79 neonates were included in the present study, with 32 in the pre-NST group and 47 in the post-NST group. The average daily energy supply during the first (p=0.001) and second (p=0.029) weeks postnatal was significantly higher in the post-NST group than in the pre-NST group. Lipid supply for the first week was significantly higher in the post-NST group than in the pre-NST group (p=0.010). The change in the z-score for length was significantly higher in the post-NST group than in the pre-NST group (p=0.049). Conclusion: Nutrient supply and length z-score change increased significantly at 28 days after birth in the post-NST group. These results suggest that calorie calculators and NST activity can promote adequate growth and development in neonates.

PURPOSE: To characterize subgroups with similar nutritional status trajectories during the 6-month period after pancreatectomy and to identify demographic and clinical characteristics influencing changes in nutritional status in each subgroup. METHODS: This longitudinal prospective study recruited 112 patients with newly diagnosed pancreatic tumor from an outpatient pancreatic surgical department of a medical center in northern Taiwan between September 2016 and April 2019. Patients completed a demographic and clinical characteristics form, the Mini Nutritional Assessment scale, and the Symptom Severity Scale prior to surgery (T0), 3 months after surgery (T1), and 6 months after surgery (T2). Latent class growth analysis was used to investigate the trajectories of nutritional status. Generalized estimating equations were used to identify significant factors influencing each trajectory. RESULTS: Two latent groups of nutritional status trajectories were identified. Among 112 patients, 74.11% and 25.89% were classified as having high and low nutritional status trajectories, respectively. High nutritional status was significantly negatively correlated with changes in symptom severity. Low nutritional status was significantly negatively correlated with older age, surgical complications, and changes in symptom severity. CONCLUSIONS: Symptom severity has the most significant negative effect on perioperative nutritional status. Older age and surgical complications exert negative effects on perioperative nutritional status among patients with low nutritional status. These findings emphasize the need for nurses to identify at-risk individuals and provide individualized nutritional care to improve nutritional status in this population. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the nutritional status in older adults in the community, to determine malnutrition, obesity and their risks and to identify determinants related to both clinical situations. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SITE: 3 Primary care health centers in La Rioja in urban, semiurban and rural areas. PARTICIPANTS: 409 people ≥ 65 years old who came to receive consultation, with 3 abandonments. INTERVENTIONS: Nutritional assessment by tools screening and anthropometric measurements. MAIN MEASUREMENT: The MNA SF® was used to determine the prevalence of malnutrition and the BMI for obesity. Sociodemographic, socioeconomic, health-disease variables, lifestyle habits, metabolic status, and anthropometric measurements were included. Binary logistic regression was performed to predict dichotomous dependent variables. RESULTS: The prevalence of malnutrition and its risk (DR) were 18.7% and obesity and its risk were 66,5%. The multivariate model for malnutrition and DR includes polypharmacy, dyslipidemia, sedentary lifestyle, and having mental pathology (OR=3.09, 2.01, 2.12, 1.72, respectively). On the other hand, the probability of presenting obesity is associated with cardiovascular risk, age, excessive-moderate alcohol consumption, hypertension and low adherence to the Mediterranean diet (OR=2.73, 4.27, 2.03, 1.97, 1.81 respectively). CONCLUSION: This results stand out that the study population has a poor nutritional status, detecting a risk of malnutrition, obesity and overweight. The identified predictors related to lifestyle habits, presence of diseases, psychosocial problems, metabolic alterations, etc. They can guide the selection of those people who would benefit from screening to detect and approach the risk of malnutrition early.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic led to an unprecedented change in healthcare systems, including the swift roll-out of technology-enabled care services, such as remote consultations. Interventions such as nutrition assessments for children are likely to continue to be conducted remotely as part of an online consultation. This article considers nutrition screening and nutritional assessment in children in acute and primary care settings. The article also provides an overview of the development of the Paediatric Remote Malnutrition Application (Pedi-R-MAPP), designed to assist healthcare professionals to undertake a standardised, nutrition-focused assessment via remote consultation and/or in primary care settings. The aim of the Pedi-R-MAPP is to help identify children with declining nutritional status or new nutritional concerns and to recommend frequency of review based on the outcomes of the assessment.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effect of acupuncture therapy on dysphagia in patients with Parkinson's disease. METHODS: This randomized controlled study lasted 42 days and included 112 patients with Parkinson's disease and dysphagia. Participants were randomly assigned to the experimental and control groups (56 cases each group) using the completely randomized design, all under routine treatment. The experimental group was given acupuncture therapy. The primary outcome was Penetration-Aspiration Scale (PAS). The secondary outcomes were (1) Standardized Swallowing Assessment (SSA), and (2) nutritional status including body mass index (BMI), serum albumin, prealbumin, and hemoglobin. Adverse events were recorded as safety indicators. RESULTS: One participant quitted the study midway. There were no significant differences in baseline assessment (P>0.05). After treatment, both groups showed significant improvement in PAS, SSA and nutritional status except for BMI of the control group. There were significant differences between the two groups in the PAS for both paste and liquid, SSA (25.18±8.25 vs. 20.84±6.92), BMI (19.97±3.34 kg/m2vs. 21.26 ±2.38 kg/m2), serum albumin (35.16 ±5.29 g/L vs. 37.24 ±3.98 g/L), prealbumin (248.33 ±27.72 mg/L vs. 261.39 ±22.10 mg/L), hemoglobin (119.09±12.53 g/L vs. 126.67±13.97 g/L) (P<0.05). There were no severe adverse events during the study. CONCLUSION: The combination of routine treatment and acupuncture therapy can better improve dysphagia and nutritional status in patients with Parkinson's disease, than routine treatment solely.
