INTRODUCTION: Training novice ophthalmology residents on the EyeSi® simulator increases cataract surgery safety. However, there is no consensus regarding how much training residents should perform before their first time on patients. We evaluated the French national training program through the analysis of the learning curves of novice residents. METHODS: This prospective multicentric pedagogic study was conducted with French novice residents. Each resident completed the recommended four two-hour training sessions and performed a standardized assessment simulating standard cataract surgery before the first session (A0), at the end of the first (A1), second (A2), third (A3) and fourth (A4) sessions. For each surgical step of each attempt, the following data were collected: score, odometer, completion time, posterior capsular rupture and cumulative energy delivered (ultrasounds) during phacoemulsification. A performance threshold was set at a score of 80/100 for each surgical step, 400/500 for the overall procedure. Only descriptive statistics were employed. RESULTS: Sixteen newly nominated ophthalmology residents were included. Median score progressively increased from 95 [IQR 53; 147]) at A0 to 425 [IQR 411; 451] at A4. Despite a significant progression, the "emulsification" step had the lowest A4 scores 86 [IQR 60; 94] without reduction in completion time, odometer or ultrasounds delivered. The rate of posterior capsular rupture decreased linearly from 75% at A0 to 13% at A4 during "emulsification" and from 69 to 0% during "irrigation and aspiration". At A4, only 25% [8; 53] of residents had > 80 at each step and only 75% [47; 92] had > 400/500 overall. CONCLUSION: A training program consisting of four two-hour sessions on the EyeSi simulator over four consecutive days effectively enhances the surgical skills of novice ophthalmology residents. Undergoing more training sessions may improve scores and decrease the incidence of surgical complications, particularly at the emulsification step of cataract surgery. The learning curves presented here can reassure residents who are progressing normally and help identify those who need a further personalized training program.  TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrials registration number: NCT05722080 (first submitted 22/12/2022, first posted 10/02/2023).

BACKGROUND: We queried ChatGPT (OpenAI) and Google Assistant about amblyopia and compared their answers with the keywords found on the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) website, specifically the section on amblyopia. Out of the 26 keywords chosen from the website, ChatGPT included 11 (42%) in its responses, while Google included 8 (31%). OBJECTIVE: Our study investigated the adherence of ChatGPT-3.5 and Google Assistant to the guidelines of the AAPOS for patient education on amblyopia. METHODS: ChatGPT-3.5 was used. The four questions taken from the AAPOS website, specifically its glossary section for amblyopia, are as follows: (1) What is amblyopia? (2) What causes amblyopia? (3) How is amblyopia treated? (4) What happens if amblyopia is untreated? Approved and selected by ophthalmologists (GW and DL), the keywords from AAPOS were words or phrases that deemed significant for the education of patients with amblyopia. The "Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level" formula, approved by the US Department of Education, was used to evaluate the reading comprehension level for the responses from ChatGPT, Google Assistant, and AAPOS. RESULTS: In their responses, ChatGPT did not mention the term "ophthalmologist," whereas Google Assistant and AAPOS both mentioned the term once and twice, respectively. ChatGPT did, however, use the term "eye doctors" once. According to the Flesch-Kincaid test, the average reading level of AAPOS was 11.4 (SD 2.1; the lowest level) while that of Google was 13.1 (SD 4.8; the highest required reading level), also showing the greatest variation in grade level in its responses. ChatGPT's answers, on average, scored 12.4 (SD 1.1) grade level. They were all similar in terms of difficulty level in reading. For the keywords, out of the 4 responses, ChatGPT used 42% (11/26) of the keywords, whereas Google Assistant used 31% (8/26). CONCLUSIONS: ChatGPT trains on texts and phrases and generates new sentences, while Google Assistant automatically copies website links. As ophthalmologists, we should consider including "see an ophthalmologist" on our websites and journals. While ChatGPT is here to stay, we, as physicians, need to monitor its answers.

PURPOSE: Screening for diabetic retinopathy (DR) by ophthalmologists is costly and labour-intensive. Artificial Intelligence (AI) for automated DR detection could be a clinically and economically alternative. We assessed the performance of a confocal fundus imaging system (DRSplus, Centervue SpA), coupled with an AI algorithm (RetCAD, Thirona B.V.) in a real-world setting. METHODS: 45° non-mydriatic retinal images from 506 patients with diabetes were graded both by an ophthalmologist and by the AI algorithm, according to the International Clinical Diabetic Retinopathy severity scale. Less than moderate retinopathy (DR scores 0, 1) was defined as non-referable, while more severe stages were defined as referable retinopathy. The gradings were then compared both at eye-level and patient-level. Key metrics included sensitivity, specificity all measured with a 95% Confidence Interval. RESULTS: The percentage of ungradable eyes according to the AI was 2.58%. The performances of the AI algorithm for detecting referable DR were 97.18% sensitivity, 93.73% specificity at eye-level and 98.70% sensitivity and 91.06% specificity at patient-level. CONCLUSIONS: DRSplus paired with RetCAD represents a reliable DR screening solution in a real-world setting. The high sensitivity of the system ensures that almost all patients requiring medical attention for DR are referred to an ophthalmologist for further evaluation.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Perception of optometrists and ophthalmologists of vision therapy (VT) as well as their methods for performing the sessions is of great importance for understanding the problems that professionals face and what should be improved in their clinical practice. BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to determine the perception of VT and protocols used by eye care professionals globally. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed among eye care professionals internationally. The participants completed via online (Google Forms) a questionnaire of 40 questions on their perception and clinical practice of VT. The survey only permitted one answer per email address and was only collected if professionals gave their consent to participate. RESULTS: A total of 205 professionals from 43 countries answered the questionnaire (171 optometrists and 34 ophthalmologists). Accommodation and convergence problems were the main indication reported for VT (47.8%), followed by amblyopia (26.3%). The principal negative factor associated to VT was the limited number of professionals dedicated to this field (55.6%). The most common program of VT was the combination of VT sessions at home and at office (85.5%), with a great variability in terms of duration. Few professionals made use of the new technologies when programming VT, such as eye trackers (2.7%) or virtual reality (6.4%). European professionals surveyed had a more negative perception of VT (p < 0.031). CONCLUSIONS: Eye care professionals globally perceive VT as a scientifically based procedure. Overall, they believe that it has low recognition and prestige, especially ophthalmologists. A great variability in the programming of VT sessions was found, which highlights the need for standardised protocols that professionals could follow in their clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: Cataract is the leading cause of blindness worldwide and surgery can restore vision in most patients. Some patients have little access to surgical services due to lack of cataract surgeons and the unaffordable costs. In 2005 we built a service model that trained rural non-ophthalmologist physicians to perform cataract surgeries in rural China. This study evaluates the long-term impacts of this model. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study to analyze patients' hand-written medical records and electronic outpatient record between January 2005 and December 2019 at two rural health clinics in Southern China. RESULTS: In total, 34,601 patients (49,942 eyes) underwent cataract surgery by non-ophthalmologist physicians from 2005 to 2019.Visual acuity was clearly documented in 38,251 eyes. Before surgery, the unaided distance visual acuity (UDVA) of 60.7% (23,205/38,251) eyes was less than 0.05 decimal. On the first day after surgery, the percentage of UDVA < 0.05 eyes was reduced to 6.0%, and 96.7% (36,980/38,251) of the eyes achieved a better UDVA compared to pre-operation. Surgical-related complications occurred in 218 eyes. The most common complication was posterior capsule rupture (114, 0.23%). 44.3% (15,341/34,601) of the patients chose to have a second eye cataract surgery (SECS) in the same clinic. At one of the outpatient clinics, 21,595 patients received basic eye care apart from cataract surgery between 2018 and 2020. CONCLUSIONS: Non-ophthalmologist physicians trained for cataract surgeries in rural clinics can improve cataract related visual acuity and basic eye care to the local population.

PURPOSE: Geographic atrophy (GA) is a severe complication of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and leads to irreversible visual decline. To date, no effective treatment is available for GA patients. However, a number of new therapies have recently been approved and several others are in the pipeline. This rapid evolution of prospects for GA patients requires constant updating of ophthalmologists' understanding of GA and its management so as to provide the appropriate treatment. For this reason, Società Italiana di Scienze Oftalmologiche (S.I.S.O.) has designed a specific survey to gauge the position of Italian ophthalmologists in this regard. METHODS: The three hundred and sixty-five Italian ophthalmologists who agreed to take part received a seventeen-part questionnaire guaranteeing privacy and anonymity. The survey was compiled through an online portal and the results were sent directly to S.I.S.O. ETS. Two graders analyzed the data and recorded the results. RESULTS: The results showed a high level of self-assessed awareness and understanding of GA, as well as considerable willingness to further improve knowledge of the disease. Most of the participants claimed to have effective rules of conduct in place for managing GA patients, including prompt response, involving a high prevalence of nutraceutical prescriptions and lifestyle recommendations. CONCLUSIONS: This survey provided an overview of how GA patients are managed in Italy. The Italian ophthalmology community appears to be ready to adopt the upcoming treatments for GA.

BACKGROUND: Dacryocystorhinostomy surgery aims to treat nasolacrimal duct obstruction and are often performed by general ophthalmologists in developing countries. The aim of this study is to estimate the clinical burden, surgeon's experience, and outcome of dacryocystorhinostomy surgery. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of Nepalese Ophthalmologists registered with the Nepal Ophthalmic Society was conducted after ethical clearance from Nepal Health Research Council. The survey form consisted of a single mail-shot questionnaire information including the age and experience, average case per month, and participant-reported post-operative complications and failures. Data were entered onto Microsoft excel (Microsoft Corp) and analyzed using SPSS 22.0. The data were presented in graphical and tabular format and appropriate statistical tools were employed for the analysis. RESULTS: Out of 300 practicing ophthalmologist, 135 (45%) comprising male 60 (44.4%) and female 75(55.6%) responded to the survey. Majority of respondents were general ophthalmologists (37 ,41.6%) followed by oculoplastic surgeons (27,30.3%) and other subspecialties (25,28.1%). More than 70% respondents perform 1-10 surgeries /month and only 3% perform >50 surgeries /month. The success rate of 75-90% was reported by 45(50%) respondents whereas > 90% success rate by 41 (46.1%). More than 80% surgeons experienced an infection rate of <1% regardless of the intubation status. CONCLUSIONS: This survey revealed huge differences in surgery practice patterns among ophthalmologists in Nepal. The surgical success rate and post-operative infection rate depends upon surgeon experience. Moreover, uniform surgery protocols and training budding ophthalmologists/ young Oculoplastic surgeons in the best modern dacryocystorhinostomy surgery are required.

BACKGROUND: Endogenous Candida endophthalmitis is an emergency that can threaten vision and the eye as a whole organ but also the life of the patient due to its systemic cause. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Retrospective case evaluation of the University Hospital for Ophthalmology Halle (Saale) and the Eye Clinic of the Ernst von Bergmann Hospital Potsdam from 2017-2022. (Age, gender, side involvement, underlying diseases, symptoms, preoperative and postoperative visual acuity, diagnostics, treatment and complications). The standardized procedures for endogenous Candida endophthalmitis are explained, the data are compared with the literature and treatment suggestions are presented. RESULTS: 8 patients with 14 eyes were treated for endogenous Candida endophthalmitis. Of the patients 2 were women and 6 were men. The overall average age was 70.25 years (53-82 years), 6 patients had bilateral eye involvement and 2 patients were affected on one side. All patients had several serious immunocompromising underlying diseases that were the cause of the candidemia. All patients underwent a pars plana vitrectomy (ppV) on the affected eyes except for one male patient who did not obtain permission for anesthesia. In addition to systemic treatment with antimycotics, voriconazole was routinely administered intravitreally during ppV. The patients received further intravitreal doses of voriconazole based on the findings. Vitreous body samples were taken from all patients during the ppV and detection of Candida albicans was possible in all cases. As part of the local perioperative treatment 1 patient received parabulbar administration of a triamcinolone depot in both eyes, 7 patients received a dexamethasone depot in 11 eyes and all 8 patients received findings-oriented local treatment with prednisolone acetate eye drops. visual acuity increased from preoperatively 1.2 logMar to 1.0 logMar. Postoperative retinal detachment did not occur and there were no serious perioperative complications. 2 patients died from one of the underlying diseases after 3 and 25 months, respectively. CONCLUSION: Despite an increasing number of case series, there are still no uniform guidelines for ophthalmologists in Germany. There is agreement regarding systemic treatment and the intravitreal administration of antifungal agents. The role of ppV has not yet been clearly defined and the question of the adjuvant use of steroids (systemic and/or local) has also not been conclusively clarified.

Endogenous Candida endophthalmitis is a rare but vision-threatening disease. In most cases, endogenous endophthalmitis caused by Candida species has a better prognosis than endogenous endophthalmitis caused by other fungal species or bacteria but the prognosis still depends heavily on the time required for diagnosis and subsequent treatment as well as the initial visual acuity. Suggestions for treatment algorithms have already been made in the past but binding guidelines in ophthalmology only exist sporadically due to the rarity of the disease. This review discusses the current knowledge on endogenous Candida endophthalmitis and draws conclusions from the current study situation.

Zygomatic bone contributes to the orbital walls, and therefore associated injuries carry a high risk of severe dysfunction of the visual apparatus. The aim of our study was to retrospectively assess the spectrum and frequency of ophthalmic involvement in patients presenting with malar fracture, and the need for referral to an ophthalmologist for evaluation. In total, 102 patients presenting with malar fracture between January 2008 and August 2017 at Bapuji Dental College and Hospital, Davangere, Karnataka were enrolled in this study. Patients with confirmed malar fracture were categorized according to Henderson's classification, and associated ocular injuries were recorded. Assessment of the spectrum and frequency of ophthalmic involvement in patients presenting with different types of malar fracture was then carried out, followed by categorization of the need for referral to the ophthalmologist with regard to the associated ocular injury, as per the Al-Qurainy et al. (1991) scoring system, allocating the patients to early, routine, and non-referral categories. Statistically significant differences in proportions of various types of ophthalmic involvement were found between categories of malar fracture, and in degrees of ophthalmic involvement within each category of malar fracture, except in the Type II group of patients. The most severe ocular injuries were noted in Type VII followed by Type V, with the least severe injuries noted in Type II patients. According to the Al-Qurainy et al. (1991) scoring system, eight patients required early referral, 10 patients needed routine referral, and 84 patients were in the non-referral category. Categorization of referral of patients to an ophthalmologist in hospitals lacking ophthalmology departments can be based on the Al-Qurainy et al. classification of referral for Henderson's Type III, IV, and VI. Henderson's Type I and II patients need to be referred only in medicolegal cases. Henderson's Type VII and V patients require mandatory referral.

AIMS: Periodical screening for diabetic retinopathy (DR) by an ophthalmologist is expensive and demanding. Automated DR image evaluation with Artificial Intelligence tools may represent a clinical and cost-effective alternative for the detection of retinopathy. We aimed to evaluate the accuracy and reliability of a machine learning algorithm. METHODS: This was an observational diagnostic precision study that compared human grader classification with that of DAIRET®, an algorithm nested in an electronic medical record powered by Retmarker SA. Retinal images were taken from 637 consecutive patients attending a routine annual diabetic visit between June 2021 and February 2023. They were manually graded by an ophthalmologist following the International Clinical Diabetic Retinopathy Severity Scale and the results were compared with those of the AI responses. The main outcome measures were screening performance, such as sensitivity and specificity and diagnostic accuracy by 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: The rate of cases classified as ungradable was 1.2%, a figure consistent with the literature. DAIRET® sensitivity in the detection of cases of referable DR (moderate and above, "sight-threatening" forms of retinopathy) was equal to 1 (100%). The specificity, that is the true negative rate of absence of DR, was 80 ± 0.04. CONCLUSIONS: DAIRET® achieved excellent sensitivity for referable retinopathy compared with that of human graders. This is undoubtedly the key finding of the study and translates into the certainty that no patient in need of the ophthalmologist is misdiagnosed as negative. It also had sufficient specificity to represent a cost-effective alternative to manual grade alone.

PURPOSE: To analyze ophthalmology workforce supply and demand projections from 2020 to 2035. DESIGN: Observational cohort study using data from the National Center for Health Workforce Analysis (NCHWA). METHODS: Data accessed from the Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) website were compiled to analyze the workforce supply and demand projections for ophthalmologists from 2020 to 2035. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Projected workforce adequacy over time. RESULTS: From 2020 to 2035, the total ophthalmology supply is projected to decrease by 2650 full-time equivalent (FTE) ophthalmologists (12% decline) and total demand is projected to increase by 5150 FTE ophthalmologists (24% increase), representing a supply and demand mismatch of 30% workforce inadequacy. The level of projected adequacy was markedly different based on rurality by year 2035 with 77% workforce adequacy versus 29% workforce adequacy in metro and nonmetro geographies, respectively. By year 2035, ophthalmology is projected to have the second worst rate of workforce adequacy (70%) of 38 medical and surgical specialties studied. CONCLUSIONS: The HRSA's Health Workforce Simulation Model forecasts a sizeable shortage of ophthalmology supply relative to demand by the year 2035, with substantial geographic disparities. Ophthalmology is one of the medical specialties with the lowest rate of projected workforce adequacy by 2035. Further dedicated workforce supply and demand research for ophthalmology and allied professionals is needed to validate these projections, which may have significant future implications for patients and providers. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: An analysis of the professional perspective of vision therapy (VT) by eye care professionals allows understanding the current controversies about this therapeutic option of which aspects can be improved for its correct application in clinical practice. BACKGROUND: The aim of the current study was to analyse the perception of VT and the clinical protocols in this context followed among optometrists and ophthalmologists in Spain. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey among Spanish optometrists and ophthalmologists. Google Forms tool was used to collect data via an online questionnaire divided into 4 sections (40 questions): consent to participate, demographic characteristics, opinion of the professional perspective of VT, and protocols. Only one submission from each email address was permitted by the survey tool. RESULTS: A total of 889 Spanish professionals answered (age, 25-62 years): 848 optometrists (95.4%) and 41 ophthalmologists (4.6%). VT was considered as a scientifically-based procedure by 95.1% of participants, but its recognition and prestige was considered as low. The main cause reported for this was bad reputation or perception of placebo therapy (27.3%). The main indication of VT according to the surveyed professionals was convergence and/or accommodation problems (72.4%). Significant differences were found in the perception of VT among optometrists and ophthalmologists (p ≤ 0.027). A total of 45.3% of professionals reported performing VT in their current clinical practice. A combination of training sessions in office and home was regularly prescribed by 94.5% of them, but with significant variability in the duration of such sessions. CONCLUSIONS: VT is perceived by Spanish optometrists and ophthalmologists as a therapeutic option with scientific basis, but with limited recognition and prestige, although with more negative perception among ophthalmologists. A great variability was found in the clinical protocols followed between specialists. Future efforts should be focused on creating internationally recognised evidence-based protocols for this therapeutic option.

BACKGROUND: Placental extract has been mostly used in skin care for cosmetic purposes. However, the use of various placental extracts has been limited due to the lack of established and effective application methods. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we investigated the antiwrinkle effect of a cream formulation-LNC wrinkle eye cream (LNC-EC)-containing horse placental extract as the main ingredient. METHODS: A total of 24 healthy women, aged 37-54 years, with wrinkle grades 1-3, were treated with LNC-EC for 2 weeks. The cream was applied on one-half of the participants' faces, and the results were compared with the untreated half of the face. RESULTS: Visual inspection, using the wrinkle grade standard, showed that the area treated with LNC-EC had a significantly lower wrinkle grade than the untreated area when comparing before and after the application of LNC-EC. In addition, replica analysis showed a significant reduction in both the maximum wrinkle width and the number of wrinkles in the LNC-EC-treated area in comparison to the untreated area before and after the application. These results suggest that LNC-EC has an antiwrinkle effect on the corners of the eyes based on parameters like the maximum wrinkle width and the number of wrinkles. CONCLUSIONS: LNC-EC, with horse placental extract as its main ingredient, was shown to be effective in improving wrinkles at the eye corners, presumably due to a reduction in the maximum wrinkle width and the number of wrinkles. Interpretation of the results is limited because this study was conducted only in the intervention group. A randomized controlled trial with a placebo control group is necessary to verify the antiwrinkle effects of horse placental extract.

AIMS: To examine inequality in dentist, ophthalmologist, and podiatrist attendance among adults with type 2 diabetes in a country with varying degrees of co-payment. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study with a population of 41,181 people with type 2 diabetes resident in the Central Denmark Region in 2019, identified through Danish registers using a prespecified diabetes algorithm. Descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression were used to examine the attendance at dentist, ophthalmologist, and podiatrist, controlling for sociodemographic and clinical factors. Attendance at dentist, ophthalmologist, and podiatrist were examined separately. RESULTS: The majority (59.7 %) had attended the ophthalmologist at least once in the preceding year, whereas 46.5 % and 34.2 % had visited the dentist/dental hygienist and podiatrist, respectively. Disposable household income increased attendance significantly, with a clear gradient in the OR of attending the dentist (p < 0.001), whereas age significantly magnified the OR of podiatrist and ophthalmologist attendance (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: This study provides circumstantial evidence that co-payment can increase inequality in health care attendance, especially for dental attendance, and it further shows that there is significant sociodemographic inequality in healthcare utilisation among people with type 2 diabetes.

Amniotic membrane (AM) has anti-inflammation, anti-fibrotic, and regenerative effects. Sutureless cryopreserved AM transplantation, ProKera® (Bio-Tissue, Inc., Miami, FL, USA), is easily applied by ophthalmologists in the treatment of ocular surface diseases. This retrospective study included patients with ocular surface diseases who received ProKera® between January 2022 and May 2023. Six patients (9 eyes) with a mean age of 56.8 ± 20.8 years old (range 25-74) and a mean follow-up period of 7.8 ± 4.1 months (range 1-12) were included, including 2 of recurrent conjunctival tumors with limbal and corneal involvement (cases 1-2), 1 of pterygium with marked astigmatism (case 3) and 3 of Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS, cases 4-6). ProKera® was inserted after the lesion excision and deep keratectomy in cases 1-3, and no recurrence or corneal complication was noted. Cases 4-5 were discharged from the intensive care unit and presented with severe chronic SJS. Most ocular manifestations improved significantly after symblepharon release and ProKera® insertion, except for corneal conjunctivalization in 1 eye (case 5). Case 6 involved early ProKera® use at the bedside during acute SJS, resulting in complete resolution. We concluded that the adjunctive application of ProKera® can be effective for ocular surface reconstruction and provides options to intervene earlier for outpatients or patients unstable for invasive surgical intervention.

A call to the governments of developing countries that parents of visually impaired, all eyecare workers especially ophthalmologists including all schools where visually impaired people are being educated, to see the advantage of proper screening and continuous eyecare of individuals who present to these schools/rehabilitation centers by qualified eyecare personnel as well as have proper knowledge of where such rehabilitative services are available by those who should knowthe eyecare workers. The specific role of the ophthalmologist is highlighted.


Un appel aux gouvernements des pays en voie de développement, aux parents de malvoyants, à tous les professionnels de la vue, en particulier les ophtalmologistes, et à toutes les écoles où les malvoyants sont éduqués, pour qu'ils voient l'avantage d'un dépistage approprié et de soins oculaires continus des individus qui se présentent dans ces écoles/ centres de rééducation par un personnel ophtalmologiste qualifié, et pour que ceux qui devraient savoir - les professionnels de la vue - sachent où ces services de rééducation sont disponibles. Background: Keen vision is one of the most important qualities required of athletes. It enables players to perform sports-related drills and apply decision-making skills. To accurately measure the visual ability of athletes, it is important to first identify the variety of visual skills involved in the particular sport. The objectives of this novel review are to identify the most important visual skills required for rugby, and to create a reference point for further studies to include visual skills essential to rugby players. Methods: We conducted an electronic search with various combinations of relevant keywords using the following databases: Sport Discuss, Ovid's Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews, PubMed/MEDLINE, Current Contents, Science Direct, the National Research Council's Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Google Scholar, and international electronic catalogues to assess the scientific literature related to the visual skills required for rugby. Only the records published in English were included. We extracted data on the relationship between vision and match performance, the defined problem or purpose of the study, and the inclusion of theoretical definitions of tactical behaviors. Results: Our search yielded 80 records, 51 of which fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The most important visual skills in rugby are classified based on whether they meet the requirements for visual hardware or visual software skills. Visual hardware skills include visual acuity, depth perception, fusion flexibility, and contrast sensitivity; visual software skills include eye tracking, hand-eye coordination, eye focusing, peripheral vision, speed and span of recognition, visual response time, and visual memory. Conclusions: Rugby players must use both visual hardware and software skills to reliably observe their teammates' positions, understand their opponents' actions and tactics, handle the ball, analyze the immediate circumstances, and anticipate what will occur. Further studies are needed to verify the significance of each visual skill in actual competition to determine a relationship between vision and the results of a championship.

INTRODUCTION: Cataract surgery is the most common surgical procedure performed in France. While the incidence of intraoperative complications affecting visual prognosis is extremely low, given the large number of patients operated on, the absolute number of patients affected by complications is quite high. Complication rates are significantly higher when ophthalmology residents (ORs) perform the surgery. Although lack of experience remains the main risk factor, sleep deprivation may adversely affect ORs' successful surgery rate. The value of the EyeSi® surgical simulator in initial training has been demonstrated to increase cataract surgery safety through the transfer of surgical skills from the simulator to the operating room. However, there is no consensus regarding how much training is needed before the first-time ORs are allowed to operate. There is also no scientific evidence that sleep deprivation is associated with a decrease in surgical performance. Establishing a validated protocol for cataract surgery training using the EyeSi surgical simulator (referred to further as the EyeSi) and identifying risk factors for intraoperative complications related to sleep deprivation will improve cataract surgery safety and lead to the reorganization of our healthcare systems. METHODS AND PLANNED OUTCOMES: This multi-centre educational cohort study will include two distinct axes which will both aim to reduce the risks of cataract surgery. Enrollment will include 16 first-year ORs for Axis 1 and 25 experienced residents for Axis 2, all from the University Hospitals of Nantes, Tours, Angers and Rennes. Axis 1 will focus on investigating the learning curve of first-year ORs using the EyeSi, following the training program recommended by the "College des Ophtalmologistes Universitaires de France" in order to set up a future "licence to operate." Axis 2 will evaluate the impact of sleep deprivation on the surgical performance of experienced ORs using the EyeSi. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ClinicalTrial.gov identifier: NCT05722080.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the Iranian ophthalmologists' knowledge of prescribing prophylactic antibiotics to patients with open globe injury (OGI) in Iran. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we utilized a questionnaire to evaluate the ophthalmologists' knowledge about prescribing antibiotics as prophylaxis. This survey was conducted in Tehran and its suburbs. The questionnaire included demographic information as well as ophthalmologists' knowledge levels. Cronbach's alpha was used to determine its validity and reliability. The obtained data were analyzed using SPSS 24.0. Results: Of 192 subjects, 111 (35 women, 76 men) were included. About 65 (58.6%) specialists and 45 (41.4%) subspecialists with different orientations completed the questionnaires. The total knowledge score was 13.04±2.96. The following are the results of ophthalmologists' responses to questions regarding the cornea/scleral injury (1.09±1.72), prophylactic antibiotics administration (2.79±1.11), the infectious agents in eye surgeries (3.21±1.49), diagnosis and treatment (2.84±0.944), and the effects of ocular antibiotics as well as their proper dosage (2.96±2.35). There was no significant relationship between some demographic information such as sex, working hours, workplace, and the number of studied articles (p>0.05). In addition, ophthalmologists with less work experience had significantly higher levels of knowledge than those with more work experience. Conclusion: The findings indicated that the majority of ophthalmologists had a basic knowledge of prescribing prophylactic antibiotics in OGI.
