RESUMO

The nucleus accumbens shell (NAcSh) integrates reward information through diverse and specialized neuronal ensembles, influencing decision-making. By training rats in a probabilistic choice task and recording NAcSh neuronal activity, we found that rats adapt their choices based solely on the presence or absence of a sucrose reward, suggesting they build an internal representation of reward likelihood. We further demonstrate that NAcSh ensembles dynamically process different aspects of reward-guided behavior, with changes in composition and functional connections observed throughout the reinforcement learning process. The NAcSh forms a highly connected network characterized by a heavy-tailed distribution and the presence of neuronal hubs, facilitating efficient information flow. Reward delivery enhances mutual information, indicating increased communication between ensembles and network synchronization, whereas reward omission decreases it. Our findings reveal how reward information flows through dynamic NAcSh ensembles, whose flexible membership adapts as the rat learns to obtain rewards (energy) in an ever-changing environment.

Starch is a primary source of food energy for human beings. Its chain-length distribution (CLD) is a major structural feature influencing physiologically-important properties, such as digestibility and palatability, of starch-containing foods. Diabetes, which is of epidemic proportions in many countries, is related to the rate of starch digestion in foods. Isoforms of three biosynthesis enzymes, starch synthase, starch branching enzymes and debranching enzymes, control the CLDs of starch, which can be measured by methods such as size-exclusion chromatography and fluorophore-assisted carbohydrate electrophoresis. Fitting observed CLDs to biosynthesis-based models based on the ratios of the activities of those isoforms yields biosynthesis-related parameters describing CLD features. This review examines CLD measurement, fitting CLDs to models, relations between CLDs, the occurrence and management of diabetes, and how plant breeders can develop varieties to optimize digestibility and palatability together, to develop starch-based foods with both a lower risk of diabetes and acceptable taste.

The current investigation focuses on the effect of different concentrations of green coffee bean powder (GCBp) on the physicochemical, microbiological, and sensory characteristics of whole wheat bread (WWB). C1 bread formulation (containing 1% GCBp) exhibited the highest loaf volume, suggesting optimal fermentation. Moisture analysis revealed minor alterations in the moisture retention attributes of the bread formulations. Impedance analysis suggested that C1 exhibited the highest impedance with a high degree of material homogeneity. Swelling studies suggested similar swelling properties, except C5 (containing 5% GCBp), which showed the lowest swelling percentage. Furthermore, color and microcolor analysis revealed the highest L* and WI in C1. Conversely, higher concentrations of GCBp reduced the color attributes in other GCBp-containing formulations. FTIR study demonstrated an improved intermolecular interaction in C1 and C2 (containing 2% GCBp) among all. No significant variation in the overall textural parameters was observed in GCBp-introduced formulations, except C2, which showed an improved gumminess. Moreover, the TPC (total phenolic content) and microbial analysis revealed enhanced antioxidant and antimicrobial properties in GCBp-incorporated formulations compared to Control (C0, without GCBp). The sensory evaluation showed an enhanced appearance and aroma in C1 compared to others. In short, C1 showed better physicochemical, biological, and sensory properties than the other formulations.

Objective: This study aimed to validate the newly developed composite acceptability endpoint to investigate acceptability of oral pediatric drug formulations that integrates swallowability and palatability assessments. Methods: In this open-label study acceptability of oral formulations was tested in three age groups (1-<6 months, 6-<12 years, and 12-<18 years) with a 2-way cross-over design in children aged 1-<6 months (syrup and mini-tablets), and with an incomplete block design of four sequences with three out of four formulations (syrup, mini-tablets, oblong tablet, and round tablet) each in children aged 6-<18 years. The primary endpoint was acceptability derived from the composite acceptability endpoint. Secondary endpoints were palatability and acceptability derived from swallowability. Results: A total of 320 children were stratified into three age groups (80 children aged 1-<6 months, 120 children aged 6-<12 years, and 120 children aged 12-<18 years). All participants completed the study. Age-specific differences were observed in acceptability derived from the composite acceptability endpoint. Mini-tablets had the highest acceptability in participants aged 1-<6 months and 6-<12 years while the oblong tablet was leading in adolescent participants (12-<18 years). Conclusion: This study demonstrated that the composite acceptability endpoint method integrating both swallowability and palatability assessments is a sensitive method to assess acceptability of drug formulations in children of different age. The African locust bean tree Parkia biglobosa (Jacq.) R.Br. ex G. Don is a leguminous species native to the Sudanian parkland of western Africa. The seed obtained from pods collected from trees by rural women is fermented into a dense and aromatic paste known as soumbala, dawadawa, or iru-a protein-rich condiment underlying much of West African cuisine, its rich umami base lending a depth of flavor as a "meat substitute" in plant-based diets for which animal protein is a limiting component. Here, we assess the protein quality of P. biglobosa seed and its fermented product (soumbala) from three locations of southern Mali comprising three different eco-climatic zones, to determine whether variation in nutritional composition and protein quality could be correlated with the geographic variables of latitude and elevation. Proximate composition was determined, and amino acid profiles were compiled for 19 amino acids, with results compared by location and eco-climatic zone. A protein quality test was conducted in the aggregate and for each zone using the WHO/FAO Protein Digestibility-Corrected Amino Acid Score (PDCAAS) method. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to assess patterns of amino acid compositional variation between the three origins. The results underline the nutritional significance of African locust bean as a source of dietary protein and of a depth of flavor providing enhanced palatability to plant-based diets. Although the PCA biplot for the amino acid profiles does indicate geographic clustering, the variation in nutritional composition and protein quality is insignificant for the raw seed, but highly significant for the fermented product (soumbala). The results indicate no correlation between phytochemical parameters and geographic variables of latitude and elevation, suggesting that management and processing may contribute more to nutritional quality than product provenance. Further studies should assess specific processing methods and the ambient microbiome as factors contributing to protein quality.

We conducted a 4-year temperature manipulation experiment in a Mongolian grassland to examine the effect of daytime and nighttime warming on grassland recovery after grazing exclusion. After constructing a livestock exclusion fence in the grassland, we established daytime and daytime-and-nighttime warming treatments within the fenced area by a combination of open-top chambers (OTC) and electric heaters. We measured the numbers of plants and aboveground biomass by species after recording percentage vegetation cover every summer for three warming treatments inside the fence-non-warming, daytime warming, and daytime-and-nighttime warming-and for the grassland outside of the fence. OTCs increased daytime temperature by about 2.0 °C, and heaters increased nighttime temperature by 0.9 °C during the growing period. Grazing exclusion had little effect on grassland biomass but reduced the abundance of poorly palatable species and modified plant community composition. Daytime warming decreased soil moisture and lowered aboveground biomass within the fenced grassland but had little effect on plant community composition. Nighttime warming lowered soil moisture further but its effects on grassland biomass and community composition were undetectable. We concluded that recovery of plant biomass in grasslands degraded by grazing would be lowered by future climate warming through soil drying. Because warming had little effect on the recovery of community composition, adverse effects of warming on grassland recovery might be offset by improving plant productivity through mitigation of soil drying by watering. Soil drying due to nighttime warming might have detectable effects on vegetation when warming persists for a long time.

To be more sustainable, the pet food industry could increase the inclusion of animal byproducts from the human food chain and fish hydrolysates have been reported to benefit dogs' health. However, there is limited research on the impact of alternative marine hydrolysates in dog food. The current study evaluated the effects of including shrimp hydrolysate as a replacement for wheat gluten (experimental diet) in an extruded complete diet (control diet) on diet palatability, intake, digestibility, fecal characteristics and metabolites, oral volatile sulfur compounds (VSC), and coat quality in dogs. The palatability of diets was assessed in a 2-bowl test, conducted with 12 healthy adult Beagle dogs. No differences were observed in the first approach, first taste, or intake ratio. A randomized block design lasting 12 wk was performed with 12 dogs distributed into 6 blocks, according to sex and body weight; one dog from each block was randomly allocated to each diet. Fecal characteristics and metabolites were measured in weeks 0, 4, 8, and 12, VSC and coat quality in weeks 4, 8, and 12, and apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of nutrients and energy in week 12. The inclusion of shrimp hydrolysate did not affect intake, but increased fecal output (dry matter, DM, basis, P < 0.05). Fecal butyrate concentration was lower (P < 0.05) in dogs fed the experimental diet. The inclusion of shrimp hydrolysate did not affect ATTD of nutrients and energy, and VSC. Both diets promoted high coat quality. The experimental diet decreased gloss and general evaluation scores in week 4 (P < 0.05), but improved scale scores in weeks 4 and 12 (P < 0.05). Overall, the findings indicate the potential of including shrimp hydrolysate in diets for dogs, fostering a more sustainable industry.


The use of animal byproducts from the human food chain contributes to a more sustainable pet food industry. Fish hydrolysates obtained from the hydrolysis of fish protein, thus containing smaller peptides and amino acids, have been shown to improve health and behavior in dogs. However, studies on alternative marine protein hydrolysates are limited, particularly in dogs. This study evaluated the long-term effects of shrimp hydrolysate inclusion in the replacement of wheat gluten in extruded diets for adult dogs. The inclusion of shrimp hydrolysate was well accepted by dogs and maintained healthy coats. Overall, results showed that shrimp hydrolysate could be a valuable ingredient in dog diets, contributing to a more sustainable product.

Duckweed has attracted increasing attention as a high-quality and sustainable novel plant-based protein source. However, little research has been conducted in dogs and cats. We evaluated the effects of inclusion of duckweed protein (Lemna; MCSelect; Parabel; Vero Beach, FL) primarily in replacement of pea protein in dog diets at 0%, 5%, and 10% and cat diets at %, 10%, and 15% on stool quality, nutrient digestibility, and palatability. We hypothesized that duckweed protein would be a viable protein source in both dog and cat diets by showing no detriment to nutritional outcomes. All feeding tests were conducted at an independent research facility (Susquehanna, PA). A standard 2-bowl palatability test over a 2-d period was conducted with adult animals (n = 30 each) to determine intake ratio between test diets (duckweed-containing diets) and control diets (0% duckweed protein). Apparent total tract nutrient digestibility was conducted with 18 adult dogs and 21 adult cats (n = 6 to 7 per diet) with 5 d of diet acclimation followed by 5 d of total fecal collection. Stool quality was evaluated on a 1 to 5 scale where 1 = non-formed or diarrhea and 5 = hard, formed. Palatability data were analyzed using paired t-test (daily consumption) and chi-square test (first choice). All other data were analyzed by ANOVA and contrast (SAS version 9.4). For cats, 10% duckweed had greater (P < 0.05) palatability than control, while no difference was observed between 15% duckweed protein and control. For dogs, 5% and 10% duckweed protein had (P < 0.05) lower palatability, demonstrating a preference to control. Both cats and dogs fed duckweed diets had acceptable stool quality (Mean = 3.4 and 3.3, respectively). No detriments in nutrient digestibility were observed in dogs fed 5% and 10% duckweed protein; however, cats fed 10% and 15% duckweed protein had (P < 0.05) lower dry matter, protein, and energy digestibility vs. control. In conclusion, the data collected indicate that duckweed can be a viable replacement for other plant-based proteins in dog diets at inclusion levels up to 10%; more development is needed for duckweed protein inclusion into cat diets.


Duckweed, an aquatic plant rich in protein, holds promise as a sustainable plant-based protein for companion animals. However, the potential of duckweed protein in dog and cat diets has been relatively unexplored. In our study, we assessed the viability of incorporating duckweed protein into dog and cat diets by examining nutrient digestibility, stool consistency, and diet palatability. Our findings indicate that including duckweed protein in dog diets maintains acceptable nutrient digestibility and improves stool quality, although it may impact diet palatability. For cats, duckweed protein inclusion led to reduced nutrient digestibility, looser stool, and lower diet palatability. While duckweed protein shows potential as a suitable plant-based protein source for dogs, further development is necessary before considering it for cat diets.

Background: The unpleasant taste of polyethylene glycol (PEG) has been a hindrance to patients undergoing colonoscopy. Aim: This study aims to determine whether the addition of a vitamin drink (Mizone) to the 4L split-dose PEG regimen would be effective in improving the solution's palatability, and reducing patient discomfort during bowel preparation. Methods: The present prospective, single endoscopist-blinded, randomized controlled study randomly assigned patients into two groups: PEG + Mizone group (3.6 L of PEG solution plus 0.4 L of Mizone) and PEG group (4 L of PEG solution). Palatability was assessed using a Likert scale of 1-5. The adverse events, amount of unconsumed solution, and willingness to repeat the same process were recorded through a questionnaire. The present study was registered in the Chinese Clinical Trial Registry (ChiCTR2000034484). Results: A total of 132 patients were included. The demographic characteristics of these patients were comparable between the two groups. The palatability score (mean ± standard deviation [SD]) was higher in the PEG + Mizone group, when compared to the control group (4.00 ± 0.859 vs. 2.95 ± 0.999, p < 0.001). Furthermore, the incidence of nausea was lower in the PEG + Mizone group (9.1 % vs. 28.8 %, p = 0.004), while the other adverse events were similar between the two groups. The percentage of the completely consumed pre-prepared solution was significantly greater in the PEG + Mizone group (95.5 % vs. 78.8 %, p = 0.004). Furthermore, the willingness to repeat the same process was higher in the PEG + Mizone group (83.3 % vs. 42.4 %, p < 0.001). However, the consumption of either of these preparations did not significantly affect the electrolyte and blood glucose levels, and renal function. Conclusion: Compared to the conventional 4L PEG bowel preparation, the use of a vitamin drink (Mizone) as an adjuvant can improve the palatability, reduce adverse events, and increase the patient's willingness to undergo bowel preparation with the same regimen.

Electrical taste technologies designed to modify the taste of foods have recently garnered increasing recognition as a viable strategy to regulate excessive salt intake. Transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) is a method used in non-invasive electrical taste stimulation, which involves the placement of electrodes near the mouth (not inside the mouth) to avoid disruption of natural eating behavior. Previous studies have demonstrated the taste-enhancing effect of anodal TES (aTES) applied to the anterior part of the jaw. However, there has been no detailed examination of TES-mediated alteration of the taste characteristics of different types of food products with complex flavors. In this study involving 27 human participants, we used the Quantitative Descriptive Profile method to conduct a sensory evaluation investigation of aTES-mediated changes in taste characteristics of six processed food products: cold potato potage, chicken broth soup, rice porridge with pickled plums (umeboshi), Chinese pork stir fry, stir-fried pork and radish, and fried dumplings. The application of aTES significantly increased both the intensity of saltiness and overall taste in all six foods. Furthermore, aTES significantly enhanced and suppressed some of the flavor attributes of these foods. An aTES-mediated increase in palatability was only observed in fried dumplings, indicating that further investigation of the relationship between flavor characteristics and palatability is needed.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition, in vitro digestibility, and palatability of dried persimmon byproducts (persimmon peel [PP] and damaged whole persimmons [WP]) ensiled with rice straw in different mixing ratios. PP and WP were ensiled with rice straw at ratios of 3:7 (PP3R7, WP3R7), 5:5 (PP5R5, WP5R5), 7:3 (PP7R3, WP7R3), and 8:2 (PP8R2, WP8R2) for 70 d. WP3R7 had the highest (p < 0.05) crude protein and lactate contents compared to the other combinations. On the other hand, PP3R7 and PP8R2 had lower concentrations of neutral and acid-detergent fibers (p < 0.05) and produced lower amounts of ammonia-N (p < 0.05). The silages were compared to rice straw silage (RS), maize silage (MS), whole-crop rye silage (WCRS), and sorghum-sudangrass silage (SSGS) during an in vitro study. The results showed that PP8R2 and WP7R3 had higher (p < 0.05) dry matter digestibility values than RS, MS, WCRS, and SSGS in a 6 h incubation period. In addition, a palatability test of the silages was conducted on Hanwoo cattle, goats, and deer, using the cafeteria method. The palatability index rate of PP7R3 was the highest (p < 0.05) for the goats and the Hanwoo cattle, whereas PP8R2 had the highest (p < 0.05) rate for the deer and the Hanwoo cattle. In conclusion, dried persimmon byproducts in the form of PP and WPs can be used as ruminant feed when ensiled with RS at ratios of 7:3 and 8:2.

INTRODUCTION: The assessment of quality of life (QoL) should be one of the main objectives in paediatric clinical trials. Even though researchers, regulators and advocates support the use of patient-reported outcomes (PROs), this has not been fully implemented. The aim of this study is to assess the measurement of QoL and the usage of PROs, palatability assessments and medication diaries in early-phase clinical trials for childhood and adolescent cancer. METHODS: Early-phase clinical trials for children and adolescents with cancer opened between 2005 and 2022 at the Royal Marsden Hospital (London, UK) and Vall d'Hebron University Hospital (Barcelona, Spain) were interrogated for trial characteristics and the use of QoL questionnaires, PROs, palatability assessments and medication diaries. RESULTS: Overall, 72 clinical trials were analysed: 12 (16.7%) evaluated QoL and eight (11.1%) evaluated PROs. Palatability was tested in 21/40 (52.5%) trials of oral drugs and 23/72 (31.9%) incorporated medication diaries. No studies mentioned patient involvement in the trial protocol. Use of PROs increased from one of 36 (2.8%) to seven of 36 (19.4%) between the first period (2005-2016) and the second period (2017-2022) (p = .02). Implementation of medication diaries increased from seven of 36 (19.4%) to 16/36 (44.4%) in each period, respectively (p = .02). CONCLUSION: Only a minor proportion of the international/multicentric early-phase trials evaluated included QoL/PROs and medication diaries or palatability questionnaires to help assess these, although this trend seems to be increasing over recent years. Greater implementation of QoL/PROs has the potential to improve the patient's wellbeing and facilitate symptom control, to enhance patient/parent involvement in future trial designs and to provide information for drug prioritisation.

Introduction: Recently, increasing effort has been directed toward environmental sustainability in pet food. The aim of this study was to evaluate the extrusion parameters, nutrient digestibility, fecal characteristics, palatability and insulinemic and glycaemic curves of a complete diet for dogs in which the main carbohydrate source was a red lentil pasta by-product (LP). Methods: Five experimental diets were formulated: a basal diet (CO) based on rice and a poultry by-product meal; three experimental diets where LP substituted rice at 33, 66, or 100% (LP33, LP66, and LP100, respectively); and a diet formulated on 70% of the basal diet (CO) plus 30% LP (LPS) to evaluate the digestibility of LP ingredient. Results and discussion: The extruder pressure, hardness and bulk density of the kibble increased in a linear manner with increasing LP percentage (P < 0.05), without affecting starch gelatinization. According to polynomial contrast analysis, rice replacement with LP at 33 and 66% caused no reduction in apparent total tract digestibility coefficient (ATTDC), with similar or higher values compared with the CO diet. Nitrogen balance did not change (P > 0.05), but we observed a linear increase in feces production and moisture content as the LP inclusion rate rose and a linear decrease in feces pH (P < 0.05). Nevertheless, the fecal score was unaffected. Fecal acetate, propionate, total short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), branched-chain fatty acids, and lactate all increased linearly as the LP inclusion rate increased (P < 0.05), without altering ammonia concentration in feces. Feces concentrations of cadaverine, tyramine, histamine, and spermidine also increased in a linear manner with increasing LP inclusion (P < 0.05). The fermentation of LP dietary fiber by the gut microbiota increased the concentration of desirable fermentation by-products, including SCFA and spermidine. The post-prandial glucose and insulin responses were lower in the dogs fed the LP100 diet compared with CO, suggesting the possible use of this ingredient in diets designed to generate a low glycaemic response. Finally, the palatability study results showed a preference for the LP100 ration in both the "first choice" and the "consumption rate" evaluation (P < 0.05). This trial reveals how a by-product discarded from the human-grade food chain retains both its nutritional and organoleptic properties.

This study aimed to assess the impact on growth, economic results, apparent nutrient digestibility (CTTAD), physiological variables, and animal behaviour when 214 fattening pigs (78 ± 8.5 kg of initial body weight and 130 ± 4.5 days of age) of both sexes (gilts and boars) were fed two levels of carob pulp (Cp, 0 vs. 20%) and two doses of vitamin E (Vit E, 30 vs. 300 IU/kg) for 40 days. No interaction effects between factors studied (Cp, Vit E, and sex) were observed on the variables. Most productive traits were unaffected by Cp or Vit E inclusion. However, the Cp increased the feed conversion ratio during the first 20 days. The Cp group showed a higher CTTAD of ether extract and hemicellulose but lower CTTAD of crude protein. Pigs fed Cp had a lower plasmatic urea content than the control group. The high Vit E doses increased the CTTAD of every nutrient and the plasmatic α-tocopherol content. The pigs fed Cp tended to spend more time eating in the early morning, likely to mitigate tannins' astringent effects. Dietary inclusion of 20% Cp in finishing high-conformation pigs is possible without affecting overall performance though it reduces nutrient CTTAD and increases feeding cost. Supra-nutritional doses of Vit E do not affect pig performance but increase the α-tocopherol deposition with potential antioxidant effects.

RESUMO

The present study investigated the impact of four chicken liver protein hydrolysate-based cat food attractants on palatability. Aroma compounds were analyzed in these attractants, which were subsequently sprayed onto four different types of cat foods. Results revealed that CF4 exhibited the highest intake ratio and the first choice ratio, followed by CF2 sample. Orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) demonstrated significant differences among 50 volatile compounds identified from the four cat foods. Using variable importance in projection (VIP) values, we selected 17 key flavor compounds responsible for distinguishing between the four cat foods. Peptides with a molecular mass <180 Da showed correlation with nonanoic acid and cedrol, while those >3000 Da correlated with hexanoic acid ethyl ester. Regression coefficients (RCs) calculated from partial least-squares regression (PLSR) results showed positive correlations between compound content and palatability for six compounds, whereas negative correlations were observed for ten compounds. Validation experiments confirmed that nonanal, 2-propylpyridine, and 3-octen-2-one enhanced palatability and correlated with peptides ranging from 180 to 500 Da; conversely, nonanoic acid ethyl ester and 3-methyl-pentanoic acid reduced palatability and correlated with peptides ranging from 1000 to 3000 Da.

We compared the performance of three food categorisation metrics in predicting palatability (taste pleasantness) using a dataset of 52 foods, each rated virtually (online) by 72-224 participants familiar with the foods in question, as described in Appetite 193 (2024) 107124. The metrics were nutrient clustering, NOVA, and nutrient profiling. The first two of these metrics were developed to identify, respectively: 'hyper-palatable' foods (HPFs); and ultra-processed foods (UPFs), which are claimed to be 'made to be hyper-palatable'. The third metric categorises foods as high fat, sugar, salt (HFSS) foods versus non-HFSS foods. There were overlaps, but also significant differences, in categorisation of the foods by the three metrics: of the 52 foods, 35 (67%) were categorised as HPF, and/or UPF, and/or HFSS, and 17 (33%) were categorised as none of these. There was no significant difference in measured palatability between HPFs and non-HPFs, nor between UPFs and non-UPFs (p ≥ 0.412). HFSS foods were significantly more palatable than non-HFSS foods (p = 0.049). None of the metrics significantly predicted food reward (desire to eat). These results do not support the use of hypothetical combinations of food ingredients as proxies for palatability, as done explicitly by the nutrient clustering and NOVA metrics. To discover what aspects of food composition predict palatability requires measuring the palatability of a wide range of foods that differ in composition, as we do here.

Ivermectin has been used since the 1980s as an anthelmintic and antiectoparasite agent worldwide. Currently, the only available oral formulation is tablets designed for adult patients. A patient-friendly orodispersible tablet formulation designed for pediatric use (CHILD-IVITAB) has been developed and is entering early phase clinical trials. To inform the pediatric program of CHILD-IVITAB, 16 healthy adults were enrolled in a phase I, single-center, open-label, randomized, 2-period, crossover, single-dose trial which aimed to compare palatability, tolerability, and bioavailability and pharmacokinetics of CHILD-IVITAB and their variability against the marketed ivermectin tablets (STROMECTOL) at a single dose of 12 mg in a fasting state. Palatability with CHILD-IVITAB was considerably enhanced as compared to STROMECTOL. Both ivermectin formulations were well tolerated and safe. Relative bioavailability of CHILD-IVITAB compared to STROMECTOL was estimated as the ratios of geometric means for Cmax, AUC 0-∞, and AUC0-last, which were 1.52 [90% CI: 1.13-2.04], 1.27 [0.99-1.62], and 1.29 [1.00-1.66], respectively. Maximum drug concentrations occurred earlier with the CHILD-IVITAB formulation, with a median Tmax at 3.0 h [range 2.0-4.0 h] versus 4.0 h [range 2.0-5.0 h] with STROMECTOL (P = .004). With CHILD-IVITAB, variability in exposure was cut in half (coefficient of variation: 37% vs 70%) compared to STROMECTOL. Consistent with a more controlled absorption process, CHILD-IVITAB was associated with reduced variability in drug exposure as compared to STROMECTOL. Together with a favorable palatability and tolerability profile, these findings motivate for further clinical studies to evaluate benefits of such a patient-friendly ODT formulation in pediatric patients with a parasitic disease, including infants and young children <15 kg.

Echolocating bats and their eared insect prey are in an acoustic evolutionary war. Moths produce anti-bat sounds that startle bat predators, signal noxiousness, mimic unpalatable models and jam bat sonar. Tiger beetles (Cicindelidae) also purportedly produce ultrasound in response to bat attacks. Here we tested 19 tiger beetle species from seven genera and showed that they produce anti-bat signals to playback of authentic bat echolocation. The dominant frequency of beetle sounds substantially overlaps the sonar calls of sympatric bats. As tiger beetles are known to produce defensive chemicals such as benzaldehyde and hydrogen cyanide, we hypothesized that tiger beetle sounds are acoustically advertising their unpalatability. We presented captive big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) with seven different tiger beetle species and found that 90 out of 94 beetles were completely consumed, indicating that these tiger beetle species are not aposematically signalling. Instead, we show that the primary temporal and spectral characteristics of beetle warning sounds overlap with sympatric unpalatable tiger moth (Arctinae) sounds and that tiger beetles are probably Batesian mimics of noxious moth models. We predict that many insect taxa produce anti-bat sounds and that the acoustic mimicry rings of the night sky are hyperdiverse.

Anise has demonstrated equine palatability but its olfactory effect is underexplored. The objective was to investigate the effect of the aroma of anise on consumptive behavior. Stock-type horses (n = 8) were used in a crossover 6-day preference test. Palatability stocks were utilized. Bowls containing oats were situated on plates holding gauze soaked with 0.375 ml of anise or corn oil (control). Variables included first diet sniffed (FS), first consumed (FC), first action (FA), and amount consumed (AC). Each trial was video-recorded. Behavior data were analyzed using chi square and Kruskal-Wallis tests. FS and FC were elevated for anise treatment (P = 0.02; P = 0.04). For FA, sniffing was more frequent versus consuming (P < 0.01). AC for anise was twice the daily average of control (P < 0.01). Data represents an important relationship between olfactory stimuli and feeding in horses. To determine thresholds, more work is needed.

The increased fish consumption by the growing human population in the world translates into an increase in fish waste. The reintroduction of these fish by-products into food and feed chains presents economic benefits and contributes to counteracting their negative environmental impact. Under this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the effects of the dietary inclusion of fish hydrolysate and oil obtained from fish waste (experimental diet) in substitution of shrimp hydrolysate and salmon oil (control diet) mainly imported from third countries on palatability, apparent total tract digestibility, fecal characteristics and metabolites, blood fatty acid profile, flatulence, and coat quality of adult dogs. A two-bowl test was performed to evaluate palatability by the pairwise comparison between the two diets. A feeding trial was conducted according to a crossover design with two diets (control and experimental diets), six adult Beagle dogs per diet, and two periods of 6 weeks each. The replacement of shrimp hydrolysate and salmon oil with fish hydrolysate and oil did not affect the first diet approach and taste, as well as the intake ratio. Generally, the digestibility of dry matter, nutrients, and energy was not affected by diet, but the intake of digestible crude protein (CP) and ether extract was higher, respectively, with the control and the experimental diet. The higher intake of eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid with the experimental diet was reflected in a higher content of these long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids and the omega-3 index of red blood cells, but it did not affect coat quality. The significantly higher intake of digestible CP with the control diet might have contributed to the higher fecal ammonia-N and valerate concentrations. Daily fecal output and characteristics were similar between diets. Overall, results suggest that fish hydrolysate and oil from the agrifood industry might constitute sustainable functional ingredients for dog feeding while adding value for wild fisheries, aquaculture, and fish farming under a circular economy approach and reducing dependence on imports from third countries with a high carbon footprint.
