RESUMO

Mining and tailings deposition can cause serious heavy metal(loids) pollution to the surrounding soil environment. Soil microorganisms adapt their metabolism to such conditions, driving alterations in soil function. This study aims to elucidate the response patterns of nitrogen-cycling microorganisms under long-term heavy metal(loids) exposure. The results showed that the diversity and abundance of nitrogen-cycling microorganisms showed negative feedback to heavy metal(loids) concentrations. Denitrifying microorganisms were shown to be the dominant microorganisms with over 60% of relative abundance and a complex community structure including 27 phyla. Further, the key bacterial species in the denitrification process were calculated using a random forest model, where the top three key species (Pseudomonas stutzei, Sphingobium japonicum and Leifsonia rubra) were found to play a prominent role in nitrite reduction. Functional gene analysis and qPCR revealed that nirK, which is involved in nitrite reduction, significantly accumulated in the most metal-rich soil with the increase of absolute abundance of 63.86%. The experimental results confirmed that the activity of nitrite reductase (Nir) encoded by nirK in the soil was increased at high concentrations of heavy metal(loids). Partial least squares-path model identified three potential modes of nitrite reduction processes being stimulated by heavy metal(loids), the most prominent of which contributed to enhanced nirK abundance and soil Nir activity through positive stimulation of key species. The results provide new insights and preliminary evidence on the stimulation of nitrite reduction processes by heavy metal(loids).

The reduction of nitrobenzene to aniline is very important for both pollution control and chemical synthesis. Nevertheless, difficulties still remain in developing a catalytic system having high efficiency and selectivity for the production of aniline. Herein, it was found that PdO nanoparticles highly dispersed on TiO2 support (PdO/TiO2) functioned as a highly efficient catalyst for the reduction of nitrobenzene in the presence of NaBH4. Under favorable conditions, 95% of the added nitrobenzene (1 mmol/L) was reduced within 1 min with an ultra-low apparent activation energy of 10.8 kJ/mol by using 0.5%PdO/TiO2 as catalysts and 2 mmol/L of NaBH4 as reductants, and the selectivity to aniline even reached up to 98%. The active hydrogen species were perceived as dominant species during the hydrogenation of nitrobenzene by the results of isotope labeling experiments and ESR spectroscopic. A mechanism was proposed as follows: PdO activates the nitro groups and leads to in-situ generation of Pd, and the generated Pd acts as the reduction sites to produce active hydrogen species. In this catalytic system, nitrobenzene prefers to be adsorbed on the PdO nanoparticles of the PdO/TiO2 composite. Subsequently, the addition of NaBH4 results in in-situ generation of a Pd/PdO/TiO2 composite from the PdO/TiO2 composite, and the Pd nanoclusters would activate NaBH4 to generate active hydrogen species to attack the adsorbed nitro groups. This work will open up a new approach for the catalytic transfer hydrogenation of nitrobenzene to aniline in green chemistry.

RESUMO

As the dimensionality, throughput and complexity of cytometry data increases, so does the demand for user-friendly, interactive analysis tools that leverage high-performance machine learning frameworks. Here we introduce FlowAtlas: an interactive web application that enables dimensionality reduction of cytometry data without down-sampling and that is compatible with datasets stained with non-identical panels. FlowAtlas bridges the user-friendly environment of FlowJo and computational tools in Julia developed by the scientific machine learning community, eliminating the need for coding and bioinformatics expertise. New population discovery and detection of rare populations in FlowAtlas is intuitive and rapid. We demonstrate the capabilities of FlowAtlas using a human multi-tissue, multi-donor immune cell dataset, highlighting key immunological findings. FlowAtlas is available at https://github.com/gszep/FlowAtlas.jl.git.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a common condition characterized by atherosclerosis in the peripheral arteries, associated with concomitant coronary and cerebrovascular diseases. Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) inhibitors are a class of drugs that have shown potential in hypercholesterolemic patients. This review focuses on the efficacy, safety, and clinical outcomes of PCSK9 inhibitors in PAD based on the literature indexed by PubMed. Trials such as FOURIER and ODYSSEY demonstrate the efficacy of evolocumab and alirocumab in reducing cardiovascular events, offering a potential treatment option for PAD patients. Safety evaluations from trials show few adverse events, most of which are injection-site reactions, indicating the overall safety profile of PCSK9 inhibitors. Clinical outcomes show a reduction in cardiovascular events, ischemic strokes, and major adverse limb events. However, despite these positive findings, PCSK9 inhibitors are still underutilized in clinical practice, possibly due to a lack of awareness among care providers and cost concerns. Further research is needed to establish the long-term effects and cost-effectiveness of PCSK9 inhibitors in PAD patients.

Objective: Binaural beats, or the perceptual auditory illusions created when simultaneously presenting two similar frequencies to each ear separately, have been used to reduce anxiety in various procedures. Unfortunately, no prior study involved preprocedure binaural music exposure among patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, and this study sought to investigate its effect on anxiety and tolerance among participants undergoing sedation-free upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. Methods: The prospective, controlled, randomized trial included the participation of 96 Turkish patients aged between 18 and 70 years who were scheduled for an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, regardless of sex or illness, and were divided randomly into two different groups to undergo endoscopy, namely, the binaural beats group (n = 48) and a control group (n = 48). Patients in the binaural beat music group wore headphones, and music was given 15 mins before endoscopy; however, no particular treatment was given for either group. Anxiety levels were assessed by using the State Trait Anxiety Inventory questionnaire, in addition to changes before and after endoscopy to measure patient satisfaction based on the physician's recorded numbers of retches noted by doctors as tolerance was documented and compared among both groups. Results: The results showed that following this procedure, in the music group, state scores remained significantly lower than before them (p = 0.016), compared with the control group (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference regarding changes in diastolic or systolic heart rate or blood pressure (p > 0.05). However, the procedure tolerance and satisfaction scores were significantly higher in the music group than those without music (p < 0.05). Conclusion: For patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, music with binaural beats was found to significantly reduce anxiety levels and increase patient tolerance, providing an alternative option to sedative medications as a potential sedative treatment option.Clinical trials registration number: NCT06114524.

The utilization of biomass-assisted pyrolysis in the recycling of spent lithium-ion batteries has emerged as a promising and reliable process. This article furnishes theoretical underpinnings and analytical insights into this method, showcasing sawdust pyrolysis reduction as an efficient means to recycle spent LiMn2O4 and LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 batteries. Through advanced thermogravimetry-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis complemented by traditional thermodynamic demonstration, the synergistic effects of biomass pyrolysis reduction are elucidated, with minor autodecomposition and major carbothermal and gasthermal reduction pathways identified. The controlled manipulation of transition metals has demonstrated the capability to modulate surface pyrolysis gas catalytic reactions and facilitate the preparation of composite materials with diverse morphologies. Optimization of process conditions has culminated in recovery efficiency exceeding 99.0 % for LiMn2O4 and 99.5 % for LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2. Economic and environmental analyses underscore the advantages of biomass reduction and recycling for these two types of spent LIBs: low energy consumption, environmental compatibility, and high economic viability.

Coking industry is usually regarded as a high pollution and high energy consumption industry. China is accelerating its efforts to reduce pollution and carbon emissions in the industrial sector, which has received little attention as the world's largest producer of coke. Therefore, in this study, the trend of air pollution and carbon emissions in China's coking industry and the path of coordinated emission reduction were studied. The results indicate that the average annual emissions of PM, SO2, NOx, VOCs, and CO2 in China's coking industry from 2012 to 2022 amount to 205.98, 69.47, 193.45, 599.80 Gg and 191.10 Tg, respectively. The main sources of PM, SO2, NOx, VOCs and CO2 in coking industry were coal preparation (51.5 %), charge and pushing (39.5 %), coke oven gas (99.8 %), byproduct recovery (47.0 %) and fuel combustion (87.5 %). The emissions from coking plants in central and southern Shanxi, eastern and southern Hebei, and central Shandong are the most concentrated. Ultra-low emission transformation and deep treatment of VOCs have greatly reduced pollutant emissions in key areas of air pollutant control, but the actual emission reduction effect of these measures has been weakened by the additional emissions caused by the increase of coke production in other non-key areas. The research on synergetic emission reduction path shows that there is a great synergistic benefit between air pollutants and CO2 emission reduction in coking industry. It is estimated that the APeq (air pollutants and carbon equivalent) of China's coking industry in 2025, 2028 and 2030 will decrease by 38.2 %, 63.5 % and 70.8 % respectively compared with 2022. With the continuous promotion of pollution reduction and carbon reduction measures, the emission reduction potential of China's coking industry will gradually shift from key areas to non-key areas.

BACKGROUND: Frequent premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) in children are usually considered benign. Symptoms and/or left ventricular dysfunction are indications for treatment with anti-arrhythmic drugs (AAD). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of flecainide versus metoprolol in reducing PVCs in children. METHODS: A randomized open label cross-over trial children with a PVC-burden of >15% on Holter; successively treated with metoprolol and flecainide or vice versa, with a drug free interval of at least two weeks. Holter measurements were repeated before and after the start of the AAD. RESULTS: Sixty patients were screened, 19 patients could be included. Median age was 13.9 years (IQR 5.5 years). Mean baseline PVC-burden was 21.7% (N=18, SD±14.0) before the start of flecainide and 21.2% (N=17, SD±11.5) before the start of metoprolol. In a mixed model analysis the estimated mean reduction in PVC-burden was 10.6 percentage-points (95%-CI 5.8-15.3) for flecainide and 2.4 percentage-points (95%-CI -2.7-7.5) for metoprolol, with a significant difference of 8.2 percentage-points (95%-CI of 0.86-15.46, P=0.031). Exploratory analysis revealed that 9/18 patients treated with flecainide and 1/17 patients treated with metoprolol, had a reduction to a PVC-burden below 5%. No discriminating factors between flecainide-responders and non-responders were found; the mean plasma level was not significantly different (0.34 mg/L versus 0.52 mg/L, P=0.277). CONCLUSIONS: In children with frequent PVCs flecainide led to a significant greater reduction of PVC-burden, compared to metoprolol. Flecainide was effective in only a subgroup of patients, which appears to be unrelated to the plasma level. (Dutch Trial Register number 26689).

Identity Development Evolution and Sharing (IDEAS) reduces provider stigma, but few have been trained to implement IDEAS, highlighting a need for implementation strategies that facilitate uptake. We evaluated whether external facilitation successfully supported IDEAS implementation and whether IDEAS reduced provider stigma within and across sites irrespective of implementation barriers and facilitators. Key informants from 10 sites completed interviews and surveys of appropriateness, acceptability, and feasibility. Interviews were analyzed using the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research guidelines. Intervention effectiveness was measured via paired t tests of pre-/post-quantitative data on provider stigma completed by practitioners who attended the training. Ten sites successfully implemented IDEAS via external facilitation; 58 practitioners from nine sites completed pre- and post-surveys. Data showed significant decreases in stigma after the intervention. IDEAS, supported by external facilitation, is a feasible, acceptable, and appropriate means of reducing stigma among occupational therapy practitioners.


External Facilitation Supports the Successful Use of "Identity Development Evolution and Sharing" (IDEAS)­An Intervention That Effectively Reduces Harmful Biases Among Occupational TherapistsThis study is important for clinical managers and other change agents wishing to address provider biases in healthcare settings. The study expands an existing program for reducing healthcare provider bias called "Identity Development Evolution and Sharing" or "IDEAS." IDEAS is a program created by an occupational therapist who sought to improve healthcare experiences for those who have been harmed by implicit biases among healthcare providers. IDEAS involves watching filmed stories of people who have been harmed by stigma within healthcare and then having a reflective discussion about the film, creating a safe space in which providers can evaluate their biases and consider ways in which they might make positive changes. This study is important for managers and other change agents because it highlights characteristics of organizations that can both support and hinder the use of IDEAS in clinical settings. These factors can be taken into consideration prior to using an intervention such as IDEAS to support the degree to which an organization succeeds at implementing the program. This study also explains how the creator of IDEAS provides external support to facilitate staff in leading an IDEAS intervention. In addition, this study will be of interest to implementation scholars and/or people who would like to learn more about methods for measuring barriers and facilitators to integrating new programs in clinical settings.

For piezoelectric catalysis, the catalytic mechanism is a topic of great controversy, with debates centered around whether it belongs to the energy band theory of photocatalysis or the screening charge effect of electrochemical catalysis. Due to the formation of different intermediate active-species during two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) via electro- and photo-catalysis, the key to solving this problem is precisely monitoring the active species involved in ORR during electro-, photo-, and piezo-catalysis under identical condition. Here, a semiconductor material, BiOBr with abundant oxygen vacancies (BOB-OV) was found remarkable catalytic activity in H2O2 production by all three catalytic methods. By employing in-situ electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, the H2O2 evolution pathway through piezo-catalysis over BOB-OV was monitored, which showed a similar reaction pathway to that observed in photo-catalytic process. This finding represents solid evidence supporting the notion that piezo-catalytic mechanism of ORR is more inclined towards photo-catalysis rather than electro-catalysis. Significantly, this exploratory conclusion provides insight to deepen our understanding of piezo-catalysis.

Product selectivity of solar-driven CO2 reduction and H2O oxidation reactions has been successfully controlled by tuning the spatial distance between Pt/Au bimetallic active sites on different crystal facets of CeO2 catalysts. The replacement depth of Ce atoms by monatomic Pt determines the distance between bimetallic sites, while Au clusters are deposited on the surface. This space configuration creates a favourable microenvironment for the migration of active hydrogen species (*H). The *H is generated via the activation of H2O on monatomic Pt sites and migrate towards Au clusters with a strong capacity for CO2 adsorption. Under concentrated solar irradiation, selectivity of the (100) facet towards CO is 100%, and the selectivity of the (110) and (111) facets towards CH4 is 33.5% and 97.6%, respectively. Notably, the CH4 yield on the (111) facet is as high as 369.4 µmol/g/h, and the solar-to-chemical energy efficiency of 0.23% is 33.8 times higher than that under non-concentrated solar irradiation. The impacts of high-density flux photon and thermal effects on carriers and *H migration at the microscale are comprehensively discussed. This study provides a new avenue for tuning the spatial distance between active sites to achieve optimal product selectivity.

Highly efficient photocatalysts can be fabricated using favorable charge transfer nanocomposite channel structures. This study adopted pulsed laser ablation in liquid (PLAL) to obtain rGO-bridged TiO2/g-C3N4 (rGO-TiO2/g-C3N4) photocatalytic Z-scheme without the need for noble metals. In addition to evaluating the resulting nanocomposite's (comprising rGO nanosheets, TiO2 nanotubes, and g-C3N4 nanosheets) CO2 reduction effectiveness, its chemical, morphological, structural, and optical characteristics were examined using various analytical techniques. The findings revealed a synergistic interaction between g-C3N4 and TiO2, suggesting the presence of unique interfacial bonding, as well as enhanced visible light absorption. Notably, the ternary rGO-TiO2/g-C3N4 Z-scheme exhibits an excellent photocatalytic performance by photocatalytically converting CO2 into CO and CH4, with 81% selectivity towards the CO and 1.91% apparent quantum efficiency at 420 nm. Thus, the findings can pave the way for various Z-scheme systems in wide photocatalytic applications.

BACKGROUND: Few patient-facing educational materials and interventions exist for the prevention of injection drug use-related infective endocarditis (IDU-IE). We developed a patient and clinician-informed website for patients about IDU-IE to promote education and prevention strategies. METHODS: This mixed-methods study integrated surveys and semi-structured interviews with patients and clinician to develop a patient website about IDU-IE. Patient participants included hospitalized adults with an opioid use disorder, history of injection drug use, and an injection drug use-related infection. Interprofessional healthcare clinicians including trainees participated. A baseline survey and semi-structured interviews were conducted with patients to understand knowledge of IDU-IE and preferences in educational materials content and format. Interviews were analyzed using rapid qualitative analysis. Results informed development of the patient website. Finally, patients and clinicians provided 2 rounds of survey feedback after reviewing the website, assessing the likelihood of using and recommending it to others, helpfulness of information in the website sections, and content satisfaction. RESULTS: Patient participants (n = 15) reported low baseline understanding of injection practice and risk of IDU-IE. After reviewing the website (n = 17), patients reported they were very likely to recommend the website as a reference for themselves (mean of 4.3; 4 = very likely) and for others (mean = 4.3). They found the following sections, on average, to be very helpful (4 = very helpful): complications from injection drug use (4.4), safer injection practice (4.4), and information about infective endocarditis (4.4). Patients on average were satisfied with the website content overall (4.8). Clinicians (n = 27) reported, on average, being very likely to recommend this website to a patient (4.4) and to use the website to counsel patients (4.1). CONCLUSIONS: A patient and clinician-informed website on IDU-IE is acceptable for patients and clinicians to use as a patient education resource to help prevent IDU-IE-related harms.

BACKGROUND: Imaging techniques such as X-rays and 3D Computed Tomography (CT) are used to diagnose and evaluate a patient's shoulder before and after surgery. Identifying the kind, location, and severity of a shoulder fracture helps surgeons choose the right treatment and surgery. OBJECTIVES: The study examines the effectiveness of small incision reduction and superior closure pinning in treating Ideberg type III glenoid fractures identified by X-ray and CT scans. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From October 2017 to June 2022, 40 patients with Ideberg type III glenoid fractures underwent mini-incision reduction and superior closed pinning fixation using the Anterior (AA) and Posterior (PA) approaches. Pre- and post-surgery shoulder scores and imaging data were analyzed. Outpatient review and shoulder anteroposterior radiographs were collected at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery. We assessed shoulder joint function using the American Shoulder and Elbow Society (ASES) shoulder score, VAS score, Constant-Murley Shoulder Outcome (Constant) score, and DASH score. RESULTS: A total of 40 patients were monitored for 14-16 months, averaging 15.2 ± 0.3 months. All fractures were healed between 14-25 weeks from X-rays, averaging 17.6 ± 5.4 weeks. Both the AA and PA groups had similar shoulder score changes. However, the AA group did better. In all cases, ASES shoulder scores were outstanding at 80%. Radiographs demonstratedno traumatic arthritis or internal fixation failure consequences like screw loosening or breakage. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that Ideberg type III glenoid fracture reduction with an anterior small incision and superior closed pinning hollow lag screw internal fixation could be successful.

BACKGROUND: Nonpharmaceutical fentanyl (NPF) is driving the national epidemic of opioid overdose deaths. Clinicians can play a role in fostering awareness of this growing risk and delivering interventions to reduce mortality. However, there is limited research assessing clinician knowledge, attitudes, and practices relating to NPF and harm reduction strategies. METHODS: A 34-question survey was designed to assess knowledge, attitudes, and practices related to NPF and harm reduction strategies of adult and pediatric hospital-based and emergency clinicians at a single academic medical center. Results were summarized using descriptive statistics. Chi square and Fishers exact tests were used to compare groups. RESULTS: There were 136 survey responses. The majority (88%) of respondents correctly answered a question on NPF potency. Most respondents were aware that NPF exposure was very (84%) or somewhat likely (10%) for someone using illicit opioids and very (44%) or somewhat likely (46%) for nonopioid drugs. Respondents viewed overdose prevention as highly important for patients using illicit opioids (93%) and nonopioid drugs (86%) but few (21%) were very/extremely familiar with overdose prevention strategies and just over half (57%) were comfortable/very comfortable counseling about overdose prevention. There was wide variability in utilization of harm reduction/treatment strategies (7.3% frequently providing fentanyl test kits to 70% frequently prescribing naloxone). Higher levels of comfort and familiarity with overdose prevention were associated with more frequent counseling on harm reduction strategies. Pediatric-only clinicians had less familiarity (5% very/extremely familiar) and comfort (35% comfortable/very comfortable) with overdose prevention, and limited use of harm reduction strategies (0%-31% using each strategy frequently). CONCLUSIONS: While clinicians had knowledge and awareness of NPF and rated overdose prevention as highly important, utilization of harm reduction and treatment strategies was variable. This study highlights opportunities for education and system-based support to improve clinician-driven harm reduction practices for patients at risk of overdose.

The electrochemical conversion of CO2 into valuable chemicals using renewable electricity shows significant promise for achieving carbon neutrality and providing alternative energy storage solutions. However, its practical application still faces significant challenges, including high energy consumption, poor selectivity, and limited stability. Here, we propose a hybrid acid/alkali electrolyzer that couples the acidic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) at the cathode with alkaline methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) at the anode. This dual electro-synthesis cell is implemented by developing Bi nanosheets as cathode catalysts and oxide-decorated Cu2Se nanoflowers as anode catalysts, enabling high-efficiency electron utilization for formate production with over 180% coulombic efficiency and more than 90% selectivity for both CO2RR and MOR conversion. The hybrid acid/alkali CO2RR-MOR cell also demonstrates long-term stability exceeding 100 hours of continuous operation, delivers a formate partial current density of 130 mA cm-2 at a voltage of only 2.1 V, and significantly reduces electricity consumption compared to the traditional CO2 electrolysis system. This study illuminates an innovative electron-efficiency and energy-saving techniques for CO2 electrolysis, as well as the development of highly efficient electrocatalysts.

The introduction of hydrogen into the engine could enhance its combustion efficiency and emission characteristics. The current study examines the attributes of compression ignition (CI) engines by introducing hydrogen into a biodiesel blend derived from algae. The improved thermal properties of hydrogen, when combined with algae biodiesel, significantly affect the performance, combustion, and emissions of dual-fuel engines. A study was conducted to evaluate the impact of hydrogen enrichment levels of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% of the nozzle volume on a biodiesel blend fuel. In comparison to diesel, algal biodiesel reduces emissions of unburned hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and oxygen (O2) by 5.19%, 3.61%, and 2.83%, respectively, while increasing nitrogen oxide (NO) emissions by 4.73%. In contrast to biodiesel, diesel demonstrated superior brake thermal efficiency (BTE) and lower specific energy consumption (SEC). Injecting hydrogen into A20 blend fuel at volumes of 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% results in a respective increase in brake thermal efficiency of 2.65%, 2.97%, 3.50%, and 4.15%. The addition of hydrogen gas to biodiesel blends further enhances their combustion qualities, leading to elevated peak cylinder pressure, temperature, and heat release rate. The results indicate that A20H5, A20H10, A20H15, and A20H20 fuel reduced CO emissions by 3.75%, 8.75%, 12.5%, and 16.25%, respectively, compared to the A20 blend. In the same vein, HC emissions decreased by 5.76%, 10.29%, 15.52%, and 18.98%, respectively, as compared to A20 fuel. However, NO emissions rose by 5.36%, 10.20%, 15.28%, and 23.23%, respectively, for A20H5, A20H10, A20H15, and A20H20 test fuels. Ultimately, the utilization of algal biodiesel and hydrogen enrichment in diesel engines was proven to substantially reduce pollutants while increasing efficiency. This study contributes valuable insights into the intersection of renewable fuels, hydrogen enrichment, and engine technology, with the potential to drive significant advancements in sustainable transportation and environmental conservation.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Traumatic brain injury is a significant public problem with an incidence of 10 million people per year, causing the largest deaths and disabilities worldwide. Head injuries can be classified into primary and secondary head injuries. Secondary head injuries can be caused by several factors such as ischemia, cerebral edema, and neuroinflammation. AIF and MMP-9 are two parameters that can be indicators in measuring the effect of Oleuropein on traumatic brain injury in rats. Oleuropein itself has many activities such as antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective. METHODS: Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (250-350 grams) were exposed to head injury, with or without intraperitoneal administration of Oleuropein. Within 24-72 hours brain tissue was isolated for immunohistochemical analysis, ELISA, and TUNEL. AIF, GFAP, MMP-9, and HMGB-1 levels were determined using immunohistochemistry in both the control and treatment groups. Statistical analysis was made using the One-Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and paired t-test. RESULTS: The results showed that Oleuropein was able to reduce AIF and MMP-9 levels in rats with traumatic brain injury. This indicates that Oleuropein has a neuroprotective effect by reducing inflammation and apoptosis. CONCLUSION: Oleuropein has a potential neuroprotective effect in traumatic brain injury by reducing inflammation and apoptosis. Therefore, Oleuropein can be considered as a potential therapeutic agent for traumatic brain injury in the future.

Nitrogen oxides (NOx) should be purified according to environmental regulations, being restricted increasingly year by year. A wide variety of denitration technologies, such as selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx to nitrogen (N2) and NOx storage reduction (NSR) to N2 by injecting reducing agents like ammonia (NH3), has so far been developed practically. Sophisticated catalytic approaches are perhaps mandatory for the sustainability in energy including complete purification of NOx. As one of the solutions to overcome problems for environment and resource simultaneously, this concept article focuses on the utilization of reactive nitrogen (Nr) compounds, mainly NOx, for encouraging an opening to consider nitrogen circular economy. For the recycling of NOx via NH3, a challenging but rational catalytic technology can be proposed by an alternate switching the inlet gas between NOx containing oxidative gas and H2 containing reductive one without an operation to change the reaction temperature. Considering the reactivity of NOx higher than that of N2, this kind of NOx to NH3 (NTA) process is promising for synthesizing NH3, being valuable not only as fertilizer but also as fuel in near future.

To investigate their roles in extracellular electron transfer (EET), the porin-cytochrome (pcc) gene clusters Gmet0825-0828, Gmet0908-0910, and Gmet0911-0913 of the Gram-negative bacterium Geobacter metallireducens were deleted. Failure to delete all pcc gene clusters at the same time suggested their essential roles in extracellular reduction of Fe(III)-citrate by G. metallireducens. Deletion of Gmet0825-0828 had no impact on bacterial reduction of Fe(III)-citrate but diminished bacterial reduction of ferrihydrite and abolished anode reduction and direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) to Methanosarcina barkeri and Geobacter sulfurreducens. Although it had no impact on the bacterial reduction of Fe(III)-citrate, deletion of Gmet0908-0910 delayed ferrihydrite reduction, abolished anode reduction, and diminished DIET. Deletion of Gmet0911-0913 had little impact on DIET but diminished bacterial reductions of Fe(III)-citrate, ferrihydrite, and anodes. Most importantly, deletions of both Gmet0825-0828 and Gmet0908-0910 restored bacterial reduction of ferrihydrite and anodes and DIET. Enhanced expression of Gmet0911-0913 in this double mutant when grown in coculture with G. sulfurreducens ΔhybLΔfdnG suggested that this cluster might compensate for impaired EET functions of deleting Gmet0825-0828 and Gmet0908-0910. Thus, these pcc gene clusters played essential, distinct, overlapping, and compensatory roles in EET of G. metallireducens that are difficult to characterize as deletion of some clusters affected expression of others. The robustness of these pcc gene clusters enabled G. metallireducens to mediate EET to different acceptors for anaerobic growth even when two of its three pcc gene clusters were inactivated by mutation. The results from this investigation provide new insights into the roles of pcc gene clusters in bacterial EET. IMPORTANCE: The Gram-negative bacterium Geobacter metallireducens is of environmental and biotechnological significance. Crucial to the unique physiology of G. metallireducens is its extracellular electron transfer (EET) capability. This investigation sheds new light on the robust roles of the three porin-cytochrome (pcc) gene clusters, which are directly involved in EET across the bacterial outer membrane, in the EET of G. metallireducens. In addition to their essential roles, these gene clusters also play distinct, overlapping, and compensatory roles in the EET of G. metallireducens. The distinct roles of the pcc gene clusters enable G. metallireducens to mediate EET to a diverse group of electron acceptors for anaerobic respirations. The overlapping and compensatory roles of the pcc gene clusters enable G. metallireducens to maintain and restore its EET capability for anaerobic growth when one or two of its three pcc gene clusters are deleted from the genome.
