Uhrf1 is a multi-domain and multifunctional epigenetic regulator playing key roles in DNA methylation, cell metabolism, and cell proliferation. To investigate the role of Uhrf1 in the reproductive physiology of female yaks, we collected three reproductive organs (ovaries, oviducts, and uteri) from healthy yaks during three reproductive phases (follicular, luteal, and gestational phases), with a total of nine groups. Real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR), Western blotting, and immunohistochemistry (IHC) were employed to determine the expression levels of Uhrf1 and the subcellular localization of this protein. RT-qPCR and Western blotting results showed that Uhrf1 was expressed highest in the oviduct during the follicular phase, moderate expression in the uterus during the gestational phase, and the lowest expression in the uterus during the luteal phase (P < 0.05). IHC results showed that Uhrf1 was mainly expressed in the ovarian germinal epithelium, theca follicular, follicular granulosa, luteal cells, oviduct mucosal epithelial cells, and uterine glands (UG) of yaks. In conclusion, Uhrf1 was differentially expressed in the major reproductive organs during the reproductive cycle of female yaks, indicating its important regulatory role in the reproductive physiology of yaks.

In many temperate animals, reproductive cycles coincide with seasonal weather changes resulting in behaviour changes such as movement and habitat selection. In social species, these physiological and environmental changes can alter the costs and benefits of social interactions, impacting the structure of animal groups. In little brown myotis (Myotis lucifugus), a gregarious bat occupying much of North America, the pregnancy and lactation phases present different challenges to energy balance and maternal movement, and reduced forage distance has been observed during the lactation period. As such, we hypothesized that differences between reproductive phases alter the roost switching decisions of individual bats and therefore the overall group structure of little brown myotis maternity colonies. We observed that adult females were less likely to switch roosts during the lactation period even when accounting for changing weather conditions. This shift in roost switching behaviour may be the source of observed differences in group structure between reproductive periods. We reported a decline in network cohesiveness, but no meaningful variation in individual roost fidelity and association strengths of dyads between reproductive phases. These results support the contention that reproductive processes in female little brown myotis influence sociality and overall roosting patterns within maternity groups.

Fisheries management requires improvement in scientific knowledge to ensure sustainable exploitation of important commercial species and population renewal. Within this context, this study focused on the reproductive biology of spot tail mantis shrimp, Squilla mantis, in the Central Mediterranean Sea, aiming to understand the reproductive pattern of this species and validate the macroscopic maturity scale through histological analysis. A multi-year sampling was performed from 2016 to 2020 by a commercial fishing fleet in the Northern Central Adriatic Sea (GSA 17), and a total of 2206 individuals were collected. The monthly average value of the total sex ratio of S. mantis was 0.524 ± 0.044 (mean ± SEM) in favor of females, which dominated the population from September to April. The proposed 5 stage macroscopic maturity scale was validated histologically through histological analysis, confirming synchronous ovarian development. The somatic indexes (GSI and K Fulton) and monthly incidence of macroscopic ovarian maturity stages highlighted a protracted reproductive season from winter to spring (January-May). Although the length-weight relationship showed a similar growth trend between genders, males reached a bigger size in terms of carapace length (C.L.) and dominated the population from 32 mm (C.L.). The macroscopic L50 estimated was 25.94 mm (C.L.).

The microenvironment of the endometrial immune system is crucial to the success of placental implantation and healthy pregnancy. However, the functionalities of immune cells across various stages of the reproductive cycle have yet to be fully comprehended. To address this, we conducted advanced bioinformatic analysis on 230,049 high-quality single-cell transcriptomes from healthy endometrial samples obtained during the proliferative, secretory, early pregnancy, and late pregnancy stages. Our investigation has unveiled that proliferative natural killer (NK) cells, a potential source of endometrial NK cells, exhibit the most robust proliferative and differentiation potential during non-pregnant stages. We have also identified similar differentiation trajectories of NK cells originating from proliferative NK cells across four stages. Notably, during early pregnancy, NK cells demonstrate the highest oxidative phosphorylation metabolism activity, and, in conjunction with macrophages and T cells, exhibit the strongest type II interferon response. With spatial transcriptome data, we have discerned that the most robust immune-non-immune interactions are associated with the promotion and inhibition of cell proliferation, differentiation and migration during four stages. Furthermore, we have compiled lists of stage-specific risk genes implicated in reproductive diseases, which hold promise as potential disease biomarkers. Our study provides insights into the dynamics of the endometrial immune microenvironment during different reproductive cycle stages, thus serving as a reference for detecting pathological changes during pregnancy.

Batch spawner fishes develop successive clutches of oocytes which allows them to participate in many reproductive cycles during their adult life (iteroparous) and spawn in multiple events within each breeding cycle. Here, ovarian follicular development was morpho-functionally analyzed in females of the iteroparous batch spawner fish Gymnocorymbus ternetzi. To obtain better insights into the reproductive morpho-physiology in batch spawners, the objective of this research was to analyze the dynamics of the follicular development, with its hormonal regulation between two active reproduction events. We found that over 16 days, follicles progressed asynchronously to chromatin nucleolus, Primary and Secondary growth stages of oogenesis with progressive secretion of 17ß-estradiol (E2). During the end of secondary growth, the increase in 17α,20ß-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (17,20ß-p) was measured relative to the maturation process of the ovarian follicles (e.g., nuclear migration and its rupture during the resumption of meiosis). Interestingly, an additional increase in E2 was observed after fish reproduction, probably related to the recruitment of new batch follicles for secondary growth. We also measured the high values of multiple condition factor post-reproduction measurements, reflecting more energy invested during the pre-reproductive process. We also quantified high concentrations of 17,20ß-p, probably related to the recruitment of a new batch of oogonia to meiosis, presumably secreted by post-ovulatory follicles, after fish reproduction. We finally found that fish without exposure to reproductive stimulus developed a regression phase at day 24, characterized by massive follicle atresia, that allow them to recycle energy and constitutive materials of the follicles invested during oogenesis for another reproductive cycle.

The present study investigates the distribution and dynamics of gonadotropin-releasing hormone I (GnRH I) and bradykinin in the air-breathing catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis, in relation to the reproductive cycle. Changes in bradykinin, bradykinin B2-receptor, and ovarian GnRH I regulation were demonstrated during the reproductive cycle. The localization of GnRH I, bradykinin, and their respective receptors in the ovaries was investigated by immunohistochemistry, while their levels were quantified by slot/western blot followed by densitometry. GnRH I and its receptor were mainly localized in the cytoplasm of oocytes during the early previtellogenic phase. However, as the follicles grew larger, immunoreactivity was observed in the granulosa and theca cells of the late previtellogenic follicles. The ovaries showed significantly higher expression of GnRH I protein and its receptor during the early to mid-previtellogenic phase, suggesting their involvement in follicular development. Bradykinin and bradykinin B2-receptor showed a distribution pattern similar to that of GnRH I and its receptor. This study further suggested the possibility that bradykinin regulates GnRH I synthesis in the ovary. Thus, we show that the catfish ovary has a GnRH-bradykinin system and plays a role in follicular development and oocyte maturation in H. fossilis.

Today, the use of animal models from different species continues to represent a fundamental step in teratogenic testing, despite the increase in alternative solutions that provide an important screening to the enormous quantity of new substances that aim to enter the market every year. The maintenance of these models is due to the sharing of similar development processes with humans, and in this way they represent an important contribution to the safety in the use of the compounds tested. Furthermore, the application of advances in embryology to teratology, although hampered by the complexity of reproductive processes, continues to prove the importance of sensitivity during embryonic and fetal development to detect potential toxicity, inducing mortality/abortion and malformations.In this chapter, essential periods of development in different models are outlined, highlighting the similarities and differences between species, the advantages and disadvantages of each group, and specific sensitivities for teratogenic testing. Models can be divided into invertebrate species such as earthworms of the species Eisenia fetida/Eisenia andrei, Caenorhabditis elegans, and Drosophila melanogaster, allowing for rapid results and minor ethical concerns. Vertebrate nonmammalian species Xenopus laevis and Danio rerio are important models to assess teratogenic potential later in development with fewer ethical requirements. Finally, the mammalian species Mus musculus, Rattus norvegicus, and Oryctolagus cuniculus, phylogenetically closer to humans, are essential for the assessment of complex specialized processes, occurring later in development.Regulations for the development of toxicology tests require the use of mammalian species. Although ethical concerns and costs limit their use in large-scale screening. On the other hand, invertebrate and vertebrate nonmammalian species are increasing as alternative animal models, as these organisms combine low cost, less ethical requirements, and culture conditions compatible with large-scale screening. Their main advantage is to allow high-throughput screening in a whole-animal context, in contrast to the in vitro techniques, not dependent on the prior identification of a target. Better knowledge of the development pathways of animal models will allow to maximize human translation and reduce the number of animals used, leading to a selection of compounds with an improved safety profile and reduced time to market for new drugs.

The ability of a species to withstand human impact depends on its life history characteristics, including social, ranging, and reproductive activity. The genera Lagothrix and Cacajao are more susceptible to anthropic action than small-sized primates due to their slower life histories, more restricted geographical ranges, and lower population densities. This narrative literature review aimed to gather scientific information available from the last 60 years on the reproductive biology of females of the genera Lagothrix and Cacajao. Most studies on the genus Lagothrix, mainly focused on L. lagothricha and L. l. poeppigii, present important advances on reproductive strategies, reproductive productivity, functional morphology and physiology, including seasonality, sexual cycle, gestation and fetal development in captive and free-living populations. Contrary, there is much less known about the reproductive biology of the genus Cacajao, with studies on free-living C. calvus and C. melanocephalus highlighting reproductive behavior, and basic description of the sexual cycle, gestation, and lactation. Unfortunately, the morphology of the female genital organs is only described in C. calvus, and there is still scarce information about the menstrual activity and the placenta. This literature review encourages primatologists, morphophysiologists, reproductive specialists, and ecologists to conduct comprehensive studies of these species to better understand the gaps in knowledge about reproduction, their relationship with their environment, including climatic and social variables. Understanding the integrative reproductive biology of these species will be a clue for improving the assessment of the resilience capacity of free-living populations and, consequently, establishing more appropriate management programs, and for the development of ex situ management techniques for the conservation of the species.

Environmental factors impact oyster growth, condition, and gonadal development, which is linked to gamete characteristics observed through histology. The reproductive cycle of bivalves is related to energy storage and utilization. Therefore, in this study, the year-round growth change and gonadal development of oysters were observed using histological analysis, and the biochemical composition changes were confirmed. The oysters used in this study are being nurtured in Gadeok-do, and 40 oysters were randomly sampled monthly from March 2021 to February 2022. Result of histological analysis of gonads, oysters were showed early development from December to February, late development from March and April, mature and ripe from May to July, spawned from August to October, and spent from November to December. Condition index values of oysters decreased in summer and autumn and increased again when entered the spent after spawning. The protein content of oysters was high in May, the maturity period, and the lipid content decreased during the spawning period. In addition, EPA and DHA, the major fatty acids of oysters, were low during the spawning period and high during the maturation period. As a result, this study suggested a close relationship between changes in oyster growth, biochemical composition, and the reproductive cycle.

Psychosomatic disorders make a great contribution to the structure of reproductive health disorders in women. The purpose of this review was to analyze the available data on effective methods of therapy for psychosomatic disorders associated with the reproductive cycle of women - psychopharmacological, psychotherapeutic, non-drug biological, hormonal. The review summarizes the evidence in relation to the treatment of disorders such as: stress-related menstrual irregularities; premenstrual dysphoric disorder; perinatal affective disorders (especially depression); psychosomatic disorders of the involutionary period. General recommendations on the complex therapy of psychosomatic disorders associated with the menstrual cycle within the framework of an interdisciplinary team have been formed.

Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent mental illnesses worldwide, exhibit high heritability, and affect twice as many women as men. To evaluate potential interactions between genetic background and cycling ovarian hormones on sex differences in susceptibility to negative valence behaviors relevant to anxiety disorders, we assayed avoidance behavior and cued threat memory dynamics in gonadally-intact adult male and female mice across four common inbred mouse strains: C57Bl/6J, 129S1/SVlmJ, DBA/2J, and BALB/cJ. Independent of sex, C57Bl/6J mice exhibited low avoidance but high threat memory, 129S1/SvlmJ mice high avoidance and high threat memory, DBA/2J mice low avoidance and low threat memory, and BALB/cJ mice high avoidance but low threat memory. Within-strain comparisons revealed reduced avoidance behavior in the high hormone phase of the estrous cycle (proestrus) compared to all other estrous phases in all strains except DBA/2J, which did not exhibit cycle-dependent behavioral fluctuations. Robust and opposing sex differences in threat conditioning and extinction training were found in the C57Bl/6J and 129S1/SvlmJ lines, whereas no sex differences were observed in the DBA/2J or BALB/cJ lines. C57Bl/6J males exhibited enhanced acute threat memory, whereas 129S1/SvlmJ females exhibited enhanced sustained threat memory, compared to their sex-matched littermates. These effects were not mediated by estrous cycle stage or sex differences in active versus passive defensive behavioral responses. Our data demonstrate that core features of behavioral endophenotypes relevant to anxiety disorders, such as avoidance and threat memory, are genetically driven yet dissociable and can be influenced further by cycling ovarian hormones.

BACKGROUND: Most aquatic biota's reproductive biology and life cycle are essential to the sustainable management and development of coastal ecosystems and aquaculture. The bivalve Paphia textile (Gmelin 1791), also known as Paratapes textilis, has an economic value in Indo-Pacific waters, including the Red Sea and the Suez Canal lakes, the Egyptian coasts. However, P. textile suffers from extensive fishing and exploitation. AIM: The present work aims to study the Paphia textile's reproductive cycle on the Egyptian coasts of the Red Sea for the first time. It helps to manage and develop the coastal ecosystems and aquaculture. METHODOLOGY: Samples were collected monthly from two saline lakes in the Suez Gulf from December 2019 to November 2020. As part of the comprehensive research study, sex ratio, condition index, sexuality, histological analysis of gonads, shell size, and gonad index were used to investigate the reproductive cycle. RESULTS: The results reveal a male-biased sex ratio, possibly due to anthropogenic stressors. The Paphia textile is dioecious. No hermaphrodite cases were observed in the studied specimens. The condition index in winter and spring indicates periods dominated by mature individuals. Five reproductive maturity stages were assigned for both P. textile males and females. Due to the simultaneous development of several developmental stages monthly throughout the sampling year, warm water may be responsible for non-sequential gametogenic cycles. As measured environmental parameters correlate with maturity stages, temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll a play important role in gonad growth. The size at first sexual maturity at which 50% of the Paphia textile population reached maturity ranged from 28.60 to 31.50 mm for females, and between 31.70 and 34.10 mm for males. As the gonad index increases during the ripe stages, this index decreases during the resting, spawning, and spent phases. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest the most suitable temperature for aquaculture spawning is between 20 °C and 30 °C in subtropical waters. Fishing should generally be prohibited at sizes less than 28.60 mm for better management and sustainability of this valuable aquatic resource on the Egyptian coasts of the Red Sea.

Investigations of bacterial communities are on the rise both in human and veterinary medicine. Their role in health maintenance and pathogenic mechanisms is in the limelight of infectious, metabolic, and cancer research. Among the most considered, gut bacterial communities take the cake. Their part in animals was assessed mainly to improve animal production, public health, and pet management. In this regard, canaries deserve attention, being a popular pet and source of economic income for bird-keepers, for whom breeding represents a pivotal point. Thus, the present work aimed to follow gut bacterial communities' evolution along on whole reproductive cycle of 12 healthy female canaries. Feces were collected during parental care, molting, and resting phase, and submitted for 16S rRNA sequencing. Data were analyzed and a substantial presence of Lactobacillus aviarius along all the phases, and a relevant shift of microbiota during molting and rest due to an abrupt decrease of the Vermiphilaceae family were detected. Although the meaning of such change is not clear, future research may highlight unforeseen scenarios. Moreover, Lactobacillus aviarius may be deemed for normal bacteria flora restoration in debilitated birds, perhaps improving their health and productivity.

In olive trees, fluctuations in the onset of phenological stages have been reported due to weather conditions. The present study analyses the reproductive phenology of 17 olive cultivars grown in Elvas (Portugal) in 3 consecutive years (2012-2014). Through 2017-2022, the phenological observations continued with four cultivars. The phenological observations followed the BBCH scale. Over the course of the observations, the bud burst (stage 51) occurred gradually later; a few cultivars did not follow this trend in 2013. The flower cluster totally expanded phase (stage 55) was achieved gradually earlier, and the period between stages 51-55 was shortened, especially in 2014. Date of bud burst showed a negative correlation with minimum temperature (Tmin) of November-December, and, in 'Arbequina' and 'Cobrançosa', the interval stage 51-55 showed a negative correlation with both the Tmin of February and the Tmax of April, whereas in 'Galega Vulgar' and 'Picual' there was instead a positive correlation with the Tmin of March. These two seemed to be more responsive to early warm weather, whereas 'Arbequina' and 'Cobrançosa' were less sensitive. This investigation revealed that olive cultivars behaved differently under the same environmental conditions and, in some genotypes, the ecodormancy release may be linked to endogenous factors in a stronger way.

To improve the quality of reproduction in Eurasian perch, Perca fluviatilis L., which is a promising candidate for Eurasian freshwater aquaculture that is currently cultivated in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), investigating the hormones that mediate and affect reproduction in this species is indispensable. The literature defines a group of four major corticosteroids (11-deoxycorticosterone, 11-deoxycortisol, corticosterone and cortisol) that might mediate critical stages of reproduction in female perch. Unfortunately, neither the basic roles nor the kinetics of these four corticosteroids throughout the reproductive cycle of female perch have been well defined to date. In this study, we therefore elucidated the plasma kinetics of these four corticosteroids during the reproductive cycle of domesticated female perch while monitoring the expression of the different receptors and enzymes that mediate their production and possible functions. Additionally, we performed an in vitro experiment during late vitellogenesis to investigate the possible direct roles of these steroids during that stage. Our results revealed that these four corticosteroids were detectable throughout the reproductive cycle, and the levels of most of them (11-deoxycorticosterone, 11-deoxycortisol, and cortisol) fluctuated significantly depending on the stage of reproduction. 11-Deoxycorticosterone and 11-deoxycortisol exhibited their highest levels, 1.8 ng/ml and 58 ng/ml, respectively, at the beginning of the reproductive cycle. By the end of the reproductive cycle, 11-deoxycortisol and cortisol plasma levels exhibited a surge, reaching 58 ng/ml and 150 ng/ml, respectively. During the perch reproductive cycle, the corticosteroid receptor complex is not regulated only at the hormone level, as the expression levels of all corticosteroid receptor genes showed a progressive and similar decline. In vitro exposure of vitellogenic oocytes to some of these corticosteroids (11-deoxycorticosterone and 11-deoxycortisol) induced an increase in yolk globule diameter and a decrease in the density of yolk globules, which indicates the involvement of both of these hormones in yolk globule coalescence. Taken together, these results implicate corticosteroids in the reproductive cycle, although the related cellular mechanisms remain to be investigated.

RESUMO

Fas-associated factor 1 (FAF1), a member of the Fas family, is involved in biological processes such as apoptosis, inflammation, cell proliferation and proteostasis. This study aimed to explore the biological role of FAF1 in testicular tissue at different ages (juveniles (1 and 2 years old), adults (3, 4, 6, and 7 years old) and old-aged animals (11 years old)) and ovaries during different reproductive cycle phases (follicular, luteal, and pregnancy phases). FAF1 mRNA, relative protein expression and protein expression localization were determined in testes and ovaries using real-time quantification, WB and immunohistochemistry (IHC), respectively. Real-time quantification of testis tissues showed that the relative expression of FAF1 mRNA in testis tissues at 3, 4 and 7 years of age was significantly higher than of those in other ages, and in ovarian tissues was significantly higher in luteal phase ovaries than those in follicular and pregnancy phase ovaries; follicular phase ovaries were the lowest. WB of testis tissues showed that the relative protein expression of FAF1 protein was significantly higher at 11 and 7 years of age; in ovarian tissue, the relative protein expression of FAF1 protein was significantly higher in follicular phase ovaries than in luteal and pregnancy phase ovaries, and lowest in luteal phase ovaries. The relative protein expression of FAF1 at 3, 4 and 7 years of age was the lowest. IHC showed that FAF1 was mainly expressed in spermatozoa, spermatocytes, spermatogonia and supporting cells; in ovarian tissue, FAF1 was expressed in ovarian germ epithelial cells, granulosa cells, cumulus cells and luteal cells. The IHC results showed that FAF1 mRNA and protein were significantly differentially expressed in testes of different ages and ovarian tissues of different reproductive cycle phases, revealing the significance of FAF1 in the regulation of male and female B. grunniens reproductive physiology. Furthermore, our results provide a basis for the further exploration of FAF1 in the reproductive physiology of B. grunniens.

The maternal gut microbiome affects the duration of pregnancy, delivery, and lactation. It also coordinates the stability of maternal metabolism by regulating and modulating inflammatory cytokines and reproductive hormones. This has been shown in several species; however, the situation in ruminants remains a black box. Here, we aimed to elucidate the relationship between the hindgut microbiota, metabolism, and reproductive hormones in domestic goats (Capra hircus) during nonpregnancy, pregnancy, and lactation stages. The hindgut microbiota was altered during these three stages, with a drastic decrease in the abundance of Family_XIII_AD3011_group in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Additionally, a decline in the abundance of Christensenellaceae_R-7_group and Turicibacter was observed from the nonpregnancy stage to late gestation. Family_XIII_AD3011_group and Paeniclostridium were strongly correlated with decreased fecal estradiol and progesterone. Furthermore, we generated a metabolome atlas of the gut and serum from nonpregnancy to lactation to reveal the specific metabolic fingerprints of each physiological stage. Several specific gut metabolites, including carnitine C8:1, γ-aminobutyric acid, and indole-3-carboxylic acid, were negatively correlated with the fecal and serum estradiol concentrations. In contrast, 2'-deoxyinosine, deoxyadenosine, and 5'-deoxyadenosine were positively correlated with the fecal and serum estradiol concentrations. The levels of 2'-deoxyinosine, deoxyadenosine, and 5'-deoxyadenosine in fecal samples were positively correlated with Family_XIII_AD3011_group. Other serum metabolites, such as (±)12-HEPE (hydroxy eicosapentaenoic acid), (±)15-HEPE, (±)18-HEPE, cytidine, uracil, and 5-hydroxyindole-3-acetic acid, were negatively correlated with the serum concentrations of estradiol and progesterone. Finally, Corynebacterium and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 in the fecal samples were positively correlated with the abundance of 11,12-EET (epoxy-eicosatrienoic acid), (±)18-HEPE, (±)15-HEPE, and (±)12-HEPE in the serum. IMPORTANCE Our findings revealed that the activity of Family_XIII_AD3011_group and Corynebacterium is strongly correlated with the beneficial regulation of physiological hormones and metabolic changes during pregnancy and lactation. These findings are key for guiding targeted microbial therapeutic approaches to modulate microbiomes in gestating and lactating mammals.

Follicular atresia is an energy-saving oocyte resorption process that can allow the survival of female fish when environmental conditions are unfavourable and at the expense of fecundity. This study investigated the transcription levels of apoptosis and autophagy-related genes during atresia in the European hake that can show episodes of increased follicular atresia throughout the reproductive cycle. 169 female individuals were collected from the Bay of Biscay, and the ovaries were analysed using histological and molecular methods. Different levels of atresia were histologically detected in 73.7% of the ovaries analysed and the TUNEL assay identified apoptotic nuclei in follicles from both previtellogenic and vitellogenic stages. Transcripts of beclin-1 and ptenb were up-regulated in the ovaries containing atretic follicles, whereas p53, caspase-3, cathepsin D and dapk1 were up-regulated only in ovaries presenting vitellogenic atretic follicles. Our results indicate different implications of apoptotic vs autophagic processes leading to atresia during oocyte development, vitellogenesis being the moment of maximal apoptotic and autophagic activity in atretic hakes. The analysed genes could provide early warning biomarkers to identify follicular atresia in fish and evaluate fecundity in fish stocks.

This systematic review (SR) was aimed at answering two questions: (1) how sex and ovarian hormones alter behavior associated with cocaine use; (2) which possible neurobiological mechanisms explain behavioral differences. Three different researchers conducted a search in PUBMED for all kinds of articles published between the years of 1991 to 2021 on the theme "reproductive cycle and cocaine", "estrous cycle and cocaine", "menstrual cycle and cocaine", "fluctuation of ovarian hormones and cocaine", "estrogen and cocaine" and "progesterone and cocaine". Sixty original studies were identified and subdivided into experimental rodent studies and clinical trials. Experimental studies were characterized by author/year, species/strain, sex/number, age/weight, dose/route/time of administration, hormonal assessment, or administration. Clinical trials were characterized by author/year, sex/number, age, exclusion criterion, dose/route of administration/time of cocaine, and hormonal assessment. Results gathered showed that rodent females develop increased consumption, seeking behavior, craving, relapse, locomotion, increases in stress and anxiety, among other behavioral alterations during peaks of estrogen. These observations are related to the direct effects played by ovarian hormones (in particularly estradiol), in dopamine, but also in serotonin neurons, and in brain regions such as the tegmental area, the nucleus accumbens, the hypothalamus, the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex. Increased sensitization to cocaine presented by high estradiol females was linked to the activation of a CBR1-mediated mechanism and GABA-A-dependent suppression of inhibitory synaptic activity of the prelimbic prefrontal cortex. Estradiol facilitation of cocaine-increased locomotion and self-administration was shown to require the release of glutamate and the activation of metabotropic glutamate receptors subtype 5. Clinical studies also tend to point to a stimulatory effect of estradiol on cocaine sensitization and a neuroprotective effect of progesterone. In conclusion, the results of the present review indicate a need for further preclinical and clinical trials and neurobiological studies to better understand the relationship between sex and ovarian hormones on cocaine sensitization.

Whether the growth zone found in the coronal plate of echinoids can be used as a chronometer to estimate the age of individuals is controversial. In spatangoid echinoids, it is not known whether the growth zone formation occurs annually. In this study, the growth zone formation process was examined in four spatangoid species from natural conditions. In Nacospatangus alta and Brissus agassizii, the formation of a dark zone indicates the maturity of the gonad and does not necessarily correspond to the age of the individual. In Lovenia elongata, dark growth zones were formed several times per year. Unlike in the other studied species, in Metalia spatagus, the light and dark growth zones appeared to be formed radially, rather than in a ring-like manner. These results may indicate that the frequency and mode of growth zone formation differ across species. As such, it is not appropriate to use the growth zone as a chronometer in spatangoid echinoids. If the growth zone is to be used as an indicator of age, more research is needed about the phase of forming the growth zone in each echinoid species.
