Objective The elderly population is increasing in Japan. Along with the increase in the elderly population, the number of patients with lumbar degenerative diseases is also on the rise. In general, elderly patients tend to have more complications and are at higher risk for surgery. Many elderly people suffer from lumbar degenerative disease. We reviewed our initial experience with trans-sacral canal plasty (TSCP) for patients with lumbar spinal canal stenosis and examined the pertinent literature for this report. Methods An analytical observational study was performed on 120 patients with lumbar spinal canal stenosis who underwent TSCP at our single institution from March 2019 to October 2021. These patients had leg pain and/or lower back pain due to degenerative lumbar disease. Patients who had coagulation abnormality, pregnancy, contrast allergy, pyogenic spondylitis, or spinal metastasis were excluded. Results Immediately after TSCP, the average Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score for back pain improved from 58.2 to 29.3, and for leg pain from 72.0 to 31.3. Two years after TSCP, the average VAS score for back pain increased slightly and the average score for leg pain remained almost the same. Additional surgery was performed in 37 of 120 (31%) patients who underwent TSCP. The additional surgery group had significantly worse back pain at one and three months postoperatively than the conservative treatment group. The additional surgery group had significantly worse leg pain immediately after TSCP and at one and three months postoperatively than the conservative treatment group. Logistic regression analysis demonstrated that a decreased spinal canal area (OR 0.986, p = 0.039) was associated with additional surgery. Conclusions We reviewed the outcomes of TSCP at our hospital. The average VAS score for back pain and leg pain improved. However, 31% of patients who underwent TSCP required additional surgery. It was found that the spinal canal area was a major factor in the need for additional surgery.

Trans-sacral canal plasty (TSCP) is a minimally invasive lumbar spine surgery under local anaesthesia. TSCP is expected to be effective regardless of whether the patient has had previous surgery. However, there are cases in which open revision surgery is required after TSCP. This study aimed to identify risk factors for open revision surgery after TSCP in order to determine surgical indications and limitations. A retrospective case-control study was conducted in patients who underwent TSCP for lumbar spine disease. Data of 112 patients were analysed. During an observation period of 7-23 months, 34 patients (30.4%) required open revision surgery and 78 (69.6%) did not. The following patient background characteristics were investigated: age, sex, body mass index (BMI), diagnosis, history of spine surgery and the institution where the surgery was performed. Comorbidities were scored using the Elixhauser Comorbidity Index. Preoperative imaging parameters were investigated, including the lesion level (L4/5, L5/S1, other), presence of intervertebral instability, dural sac area, presence of bony stenosis and presence of epidural lipoma. Multivariate analysis revealed that intervertebral instability (odds ratio 2.56, confidence interval 1.00-6.51, p = 0.046) and a narrow dural sac area (odds ratio 0.98, confidence interval 0.97-0.99, p = 0.002) were significant risk factors for open revision surgery after TSCP.

AIM: To outline the variations in morphology and a few clinically relevant morphometric parameters of the sacral hiatus. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 50 dry human sacra, of unspecified sex, in the Department of Anatomy at a medical college in South India. The sex was determined using the sacral, auricular and curvature index. The variations and morphometry of the sacra were documented and tabulated. RESULTS: It was observed that the inverted U shape of sacral hiatus was common in both males (n=24) and females (n=26). There was one female sacrum with complete dorsal wall agenesis. In males, the length of the apex of sacral hiatus from 1st sacral spine was 5.82 cm ± 1.27 and in females, it was 6.02 cm ± 1.08. Sacral hiatus depth in males was 0.56 cm ± 0.16 and in females 0.54 cm ± 0.14. The width of sacral hiatus at the cornua in males was 1.42 cm ± 0.29 and in females, it was 1.46 cm ± 0.38 CONCLUSION: Knowledge of incidences of variations in the morphology and morphometry of the sacral hiatus across various population groups is paramount for the success and reliability of epidural anesthesia. The success rate of such procedures depends on the clinicians' understanding of the discrepancy in the sacral hiatus.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the safety and efficacy of reinforced radiculoplasty in the treatment of symptomatic sacral Tarlov cysts (TCs). METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data and follow-up data of 71 patients with symptomatic sacral TCs who underwent reinforced radiculoplasty in the Neurosurgery Department of Peking University Third Hospital from June 2018 to March 2021. All the operations were performed under neuroelectrophysiological monitoring. Intraoperative cyst exploration, partial resection of the cyst wall, narrowing of the leak, nerve root sleeve radiculoplasty and artificial dural reinforcement were performed. The incidence of postoperative complications and new neurological dysfunction was analyzed. Visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to assess the changes of pain before and after surgery. The Japanese Orthopedics Association (JOA) low back pain score was used to evaluate the changes in nerve function before and after surgery. RESULTS: In the study, 71 patients had 101 TCs, 19 (18.8%) TCs originated from the left S1 nerve, 26 (25.7%) originated from the left S2 nerve, 3 (3.0%) originated from the left S3 nerve, 14 (13.9%) originated from the right S1 nerve, 33 (32.7%) originated from the right S2 nerve, 6 (5.9%) originated from the right S3 nerve, all the TCs underwent reinforced radiculoplasty. Deep infection (1 case), subcutaneous effusion (1 case), fat li-quefaction (1 case) and urinary tract infection (4 cases) were recorded postoperatively. The patients were followed up for 12-43 months (median, 26 months). Two cases had new urinary retention after operation, and the catheter was removed at the end of the first and second months respectively. One case had new fecal weakness, which improved after 3 months. Compared with preoperation, VAS decreased significantly at the last follow-up [median, 6 (4-9) vs. 1 (0-5), Z=-7.272, P < 0.001], JOA score increased significantly [median, 20 (16-25) vs. 27 (18-29), Z=-7.265, P < 0.001]. There were 18 cured cases (25.4%), 41 excellent cases (57.7%), 8 effective cases (11.3%), and 4 invalid cases (5.6%). The total efficiency was 94.4% (67/71). Two (1.98%) cysts recurred. CONCLUSION: For patients with symptomatic sacral TCs, reinforced radiculoplasty can significantly improve the pain and nerve function, which is safe and reliable.

BACKGROUND: Each vertebra is formed by combining the distal portion of one somite and the cranial half of its proximate part. HOX genes regulate the patterning of the shapes of the non-identical spinal column. In the sacral area, anatomical dissimilarity is on account of the distinct shape of the sacral hiatus and the outright non-subsistence of the posticous embankment of the sacral neural tube, which is a consequence of the non-fulfillment of bonding of lamina of all sacral vertebrae. After that, the meninges and the spinal nerve are unprotected and undiagnosable without an X-ray examination. Therefore, it is difficult to detect the reasons for caudal block failure, low back pain, etc. The current research aimed to improve the proficiency of anatomical and developmental errors of the dorsal wall of the sacrum. METHODS: This study was conducted on 60 dried adult sacra of unknown sexes from the stock wing of Anatomy, Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College, Bangladesh, from 2017 to 2018. The undefined gender of the sacrum was identified. RESULTS: Out of 60 sacra, 30 (50.0%) were found to be that of males and 30 (50.0%) of females. Among the study samples, only three (5%) samples presented a complete absence of the sacrum's dorsal wall and and incidence among males was higher than females. CONCLUSION: This type of sacral aberration has paramount clinical importance. Thereby avoiding caudal epidural block-connected sufferings and backbone operative procedures. The expertise regarding the anatomical variation of sacral hiatus is necessary to reduce the failure rate during caudal epidural anesthesia, helps orthopedic surgeons diagnose the cause of low back pain or in surgical situations, and helps pediatricians deal with congenital anomalies such as meningocele and myelomeningocele.

Background and Objectives: Clinicians are required to manage a growing number of elderly patients with several medical comorbidities, and invasive surgical treatments are sometimes not advisable for these patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of minimally invasive intraspinal canal treatment, trans-sacral canal plasty (TSCP), for patients with and without failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS). Materials and Methods: A multicenter analysis was conducted. TSCP was performed in patients with chronic low back pain and leg pain due to lumbar spinal disorders. An adhesiolysis by TSCP was carried out, then a mixture of steroid and local anesthesia was injected. Visual Analog Scales (VAS) for low back pain and leg pain, and complications were evaluated. Results: A total of 271 patients with a minimum 6-month follow-up were enrolled. There were 80 patients who had a history of previous lumbar spinal surgery (F group), and 191 patients without previous lumbar spinal surgery (N group). There were no significant differences in sex and age between the two groups. VAS scores for low back pain (N group/F group) preoperatively, immediately postoperatively, and 1 month, 3 months and 6 months postoperatively, were 51/52 mm, 24/26 mm, 33/34 mm, 30/36 mm, and 30/36 mm, respectively. VAS scores for leg pain were 69/67 mm, 28/27 mm, 39/41 mm, 36/43 mm, and 32/40 mm, respectively. Both VAS scores for low back pain and leg pain were significantly decreased from baseline to final follow-up in both groups (p < 0.01). However, VAS scores for leg pain at 3 months and 6 months postoperatively were significantly higher in F group (p < 0.05). There were three catheter breakages (2/3 in F group), and one dural tear in F group. Conclusions: TSCP significantly reduced both VAS scores for low back and leg pain in patients with and without FBSS. However, co-existence of intractable epidural adhesion might be associated with less improvement in FBSS.

The dorsal wall of the sacrum presents various anatomical variations, while the dorsal bony wall of the sacral canal suffers more. We report a case of a sacrum with a series of variants in the midline due to abnormal ossification and a bizarre aperture on the sagittal plane between the 1st and the 2nd sacral spinous processes. A failure of the ossification patter during embryological life, or an ossification of the supraspinous ligament may result in such an aperture. Sacrum variety is of great importance for the daily proper medical practice.

RESUMO

The sacral canal is the continuation of the vertebral canal in the sacrum. The sacral canal contains spinal meninges, lumbar and sacral part of spinal nerves and filum terminale. So sacral canal has been used for the caudal epidural block. During routine osteology demonstration classes for undergraduate students, we observed a dry human sacrum with complete agenesis of the dorsal wall of the sacral canal. Knowledge of these variations is important to diagnose lower back pain, sciatica, caudal regression syndrome and to avoid complications related to caudal epidural block and other spinal surgeries like in placement of screw for spinal fusion.

BACKGROUND: A caudal epidural steroid injection (CESI) is a commonly used method to improve symptoms of lumbosacral pain. We compared the achievement of successful epidurograms and patient-reported clinical outcomes following different needle-insertion depths during CESI. METHODS: For the conventional method group, the needle was advanced into the sacral canal. For the alternative method group, the needle was positioned immediately after penetration of the sacrococcygeal ligament. Epidural filling patterns and vascular uptake during fluoroscopy were determined to verify successful epidural injection. Procedural pain scores were investigated immediately after the procedure. Pain scores and patient global impression of symptom change were evaluated at 1-month follow-up. RESULTS: Assessments were completed by 127 patients (conventional method, n=64; alternative method, n=63). The incidence of intravascular injection was significantly lower in the alternative method group than in the conventional method group (3.2% vs 20.3%, P=0.005). Procedural pain during needle insertion was significantly lower in the alternative method group (3.7±1.3 vs 5.3±1.2, P<0.001). Epidural contrast filling patterns were similar in both groups. One-month follow-up pain scores and patient global impression of symptom change were comparable in both groups. CONCLUSION: Compared with the conventional method, the alternative method for CESI could achieve similar epidural spread and symptom improvement. The alternative technique exhibited clinical benefits of a lower rate of intravascular injection and less procedural pain.

BACKGROUND: Information regarding the position and relationship of vital structures within the caudal canal is important for anesthesiologists who perform a caudal block. This information can be acquired by anatomical dissection, with ultrasound technology, or radiological studies. AIMS: The aim of this study was to determine the position of the dural sac in neonates by measuring the distance of the termination of the dural sac from the apex of the sacral hiatus in neonatal cadavers. METHODS: After careful dissection, the distance from the apex of the sacral hiatus to the dural sac was measured in a sample of neonatal cadavers. RESULTS: In 39 neonatal cadavers, the mean distance from the apex of the sacral hiatus to the dural sac was 10.45 mm. The range of this distance was between 4.94 and 26.28 mm. The mean distance for females was 9.64 mm (range from 6.66 to 15.09); that for males was 10.90 mm (range between 4.94 and 26.28). Linear regression with the log of this distance as the outcome variable gave an estimated 3.3% increase in the distance for each 1 cm increase in the length of the neonate (95% CI for this proportion was 1.91-4.71). CONCLUSION: Anesthesiologists should be aware of the short distance between the sacral hiatus and the dural sac when performing caudal blocks, the shortest distance was 4.94 mm. Armed with this knowledge, caudal techniques should be modified to improve the safety and reduce the risk of complications, such as dural puncture.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the efficacies of ultrasound guided sacral hiatus injection and conventional sacral canal injection performed for caudal block in children. DESIGN: Randomized controlled clinical trial. SETTING: Operating rooms of university hospital of Erzurum, Turkey. PATIENTS: One hundred-thirty four children, American Society of Anesthesiologists I-II, between the ages of 5 and 12, scheduled for elective phimosis and circumcision surgery. INTERVENTIONS: Patients assigned to two groups for ultrasound guided caudal block (Group U, n=68) or conventional caudal block (Group C, n=66). Caudal solution was prepared as 0.125% levobupivacaine plus 10mcg/kg morphine (total volume: 0.5ml/kg), and was administered to both groups. MEASUREMENTS: The block performing time, the block success rate, the number of needle puncture, the success at first puncture and the complications were recorded. MAIN RESULTS: The block performing time and the success rate of block were similar between Group U and Group C (109.96±49.73s vs 103.17±45.12s, and 97% vs 93%, respectively p>0.05). The first puncture success rate was higher in Group U than in Group C (80% vs 63%, respectively p=0.026). No significant difference was observed between the groups with regard to the number of needle punctures (p=0.060). The rates of vascular puncture and subcutaneus bulging were higher in Group C than in Group U (8/66 vs 1/68, and 8/66 vs 0/68, respectively p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Despite the limitations in central neuroaxial anesthesia we recommend the use of ultrasound since it reduces the complications and increases the success rate of first puncture in pediatric caudal injection.

PURPOSE: Caudal epidural anesthesia (CEB) is widely used for the prevention of chronic lower back pain, the control of intraoperative analgesia such as genitourinary surgery and labor pain cases in sacral epidural space approach for the implementation of analgesia. CEB is an anesthetic solution used into the sacral canal via sacral hiatus (SH). For optimal access into the sacral epidural space, detailed anatomical landmarks of SH are required. This study aims at exploring the anatomical structures and differences of the SH by using the sacral bone as a guide point to failure criteria for reviewing the caudal epidural anesthesia and improving the criteria for success in practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Detailed morphometric measurements of orientation points of the SH were taken in 87 sacral bones. The measurements were taken using digital calipers and calculated with photogrammetric methods using Image J program. RESULTS: Most commonly encountered shape of the SH was inverted U (33.33%), while 6.9% 3.45% often lack SH and bifida shape were found. The average length of the SH was 28.7 ± 7.1 mm, the average distance of the intercornual distance was 13.48 ± 2.69 mm, the average of the apex of SH and S2 sacral foramen was 34.68 ± 7.09 mm. There was no statistically significant difference determined in bilateral measurements (p > 0.05). Apex and base of SH were most commonly observed against S4 and S5 vertebrae, respectively. The level of maximum curvature of sacrum was S3 in 62.07% and S4 in 28.78%. Findings of spina bifida level were found 16.13% often in L5-S1 segment. Sacral cornua were marked by their bilateral presence in 55.26% and impalpable in 21.05% cases. Minimum distance between the S2 and the apex of the SH was 7.25 mm which suggested that it would not be safe to push the needle beyond 7 mm into the sacral canal so as to avoid dural puncture. In 8.77% cases, the depth of hiatus was less than 3 mm. CONCLUSIONS: Single bony landmark may not help in locating the SH because of the anatomical variations. Important anatomical landmarks of the CEB are the sacral cornu, lateral sacral crests, the apex of the SH, the base of the SH, the top portion of the median sacral crest, anteroposterior distance of the sacral canal, intercornual distance, distance of the apex of the SH to the S2 foramina. Depth of hiatus less than 3 mm may be one of the causes for the failure of needle insertion. Surrounding bony irregularities, different shapes of hiatus and defects in dorsal wall of sacral canal should be taken into consideration before undertaking CEB so as to avoid its failure. This guide can be done by considering the points and securing a successful venture.

BACKGROUND: Calcifying pseudoneoplasm of the spine is an extremely rare lesion and has not yet been reported in the sacral canal. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present the first known case of a calcifying pseudoneoplasm of the neuraxis arising from the sacral canal and discuss the clinicopathological features and neuroradiological findings of this lesion. CONCLUSIONS: Calcifying pseudoneoplasm of the neuraxis can occur throughout the spine, including the sacral canal, and should be included in the differential diagnosis of intraspinal calcified lesions.

PURPOSE: This prospective study analyzes clinical characteristics and outcomes of sacral extradural spinal meningeal cysts (SESMC) without spinal nerve root fibers (SNRF) undergoing neck transfixion. METHODS: Using the relationship between the cysts and SNRF, SESMCs were divided into two types: cysts with SNRF known as Tarlov cysts and cysts without. If the SESMCs were identified as those without SNRFs, the neck of the cyst was transfixed, ligated and the remaining cyst wall removed distal to the clip. The improved Japanese Orthopedic Association (IJOA) scoring system was used to evaluate preoperative and postoperative neurological functions of the patients. RESULTS: Twenty-seven patients were included in this study. The average age was 42.7 ± 11.93 years. The mean preoperative IJOA score was 17.5 ± 2.47, and postoperative IJOA score was 19.1 ± 1.41. The difference between preoperative and postoperative IJOA scores was statistically significant (t = -3.75, P = 0.001), with a significant improvement in neurological function after surgery. Among the improvements in neurological function, the most significant was bowel/bladder function (z = -2.33, P = 0.02). CONCLUSION: Most patients experienced significant improvement in their neurological function after surgery. The most significant area of neurological improvement was bowel/bladder dysfunction, however, preoperative stool or urine incontinence did not recover completely.

Epiduroscopy is very useful in the treatment of not only low back pain caused by failed back surgery syndrome, epidural scar or herniated disc but also by chronic refractory low back pain which does not respond to interventional conservative treatment including fluoroscopically-directed epidural steroid injections and percutaneous adhesiolysis. Because cauterization using a laser fiber has become recently available, a wider opening is required to enter into the sacral canal in the case of epiduroscopic laser neural decompression (ELND). However, in a few patients, it is difficult to insert a device into the epidural space due to stenosis around the opening, and there is no alternative method. Herein, we report a case where a hiatus rasp specially designed for such patients was used to perform the operation.

Sacrum is formed by the fusion of five sacral vertebrae and forms the lower part of vertebral column. The opening present at the lower end of sacral canal is known as sacral hiatus. Anatomical variations in morphology and morphometry of sacral hiatus are important clinically as well as surgically. 159 dry clean human Sacra were taken from Department of Anatomy, Sri Guru Ram Das Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Vallah (Amritsar). Various shapes of sacral hiatus were observed which included inverted U (42.95%), inverted V (27.51%), irregular (16.10%), dumbbell (11.40%) and bifid (2.01%). The apex of sacral hiatus was commonly found at the level of 4th sacral vertebra in 56.36%. The mean length of sacral hiatus was 22.69 mm. The mean anteroposterior diameter of sacral canal at the apex of sacral hiatus was 6.49 mm. Narrowing of sacral canal at the apex of sacral hiatus (diameter less than 3 mm) was observed to be high (5.36%). The knowledge of anatomical variations of dimensions of sacral hiatus is important while doing caudal epidural block and it may help to improve its success rate.


El sacro está conformado por la fusión de las cinco vértebras sacras, y forma la parte inferior de la columna vertebral. La abertura presente en el extremo inferior del canal sacro se conoce como hiato sacro. Las variaciones anatómicas en la morfología y la morfometría del hiato sacro son importantes clínica y quirúrgicamente. Fueron utilizados 159 sacros humanos, limpios y secos, del Departamento de Anatomía, Sri Guru Ram Das Instituto de Ciencias Médicas e Investigación Vallah (Amritsar). Fueron observadas varias formas de hiato sacro: U invertida (42,95%), V invertida (27,51%), irregular (16,10%), de pesa (11,40%) y bífida (2,01%). El ápice del hiato sacro se encuentra comúnmente a nivel de la cuarta vértebra sacra en el 56,36%. La longitud media de hiato sacro fue 22,69 mm. El diámetro medio anteroposterior del canal sacro en el ápice del hiato sacro fue 6,49 mm. El estrechamiento del canal sacro en el ápice del hiato sacro (diámetro inferior a 3 mm) fue alto (5,36%). El conocimiento de las variaciones anatómicas de las dimensiones del hiato sacro es importante para el bloqueo epidural caudal y puede ayudar a mejorar su tasa de éxito.

INTRODUCTION: Caudal block is now- a -days a commonly used procedure for pain management and regional anaesthesia. The optimum volume of drugs required to reach the appropriate level is needed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: For this, we studied seventy-two human sacra and measured morphometrics like height of canal and transverse diameter. We utilized these measurements for volume estimation of sacral canal and caudal space by forming a simple mathematical formula for volume half-cone. RESULTS: We observed that mean volumes of sacral canal and caudal space were 38.26 cm(3) (23.76-62.78 cm(3)) and 14.25cm(3) (6.67-24 cm(3)) respectively.Volumes of sacral canal and caudal space had higher values in males than in females. CONCLUSION: So, finally, it was concluded that volume of caudal space could be easily calculated this way and it was as reliable as MRI.

Lumbosacral part of the spinal canal requires special attention because this is the site commonly involved in spina bifida, tethered cord syndrome and some other pathologies like fatty tumours in the spine, cysts and syrinxes. The diagnosis as well as the treatment of neural tube defects mandates an accurate knowledge of morphometry of lumbosacral vertebral canal. There are various reports on radiological morphometric measurements in human foetuses by various authors but these possess inherent variability due to imaging techniques, patient positioning, observer's measuring techniques and normal and pathological variations. To overcome all these limitations, direct measurements by vernier calliper were preferred. 30 Formalin preserved human foetuses, of all age groups and both sexes, free of congenital craniovertebral anomalies, were obtained from the museum of Dept. of Anatomy, J. N. Medical College AMU Aligarh for the present study. Foetuses were divided into five groups (I-V) based on their gestational ages. Group I foetuses were of less than 17 weeks, II of 17-20 weeks, III of 21-25 weeks, IV of 26-30 weeks and V of more than 30 weeks. Each group contained 6 foetuses having both male and female, 3 each. Morphometric parameters taken into account were length of lumbar canal, maximum transverse diameters of lumbar vertebral canal at different vertebral levels, heights of the posterior surfaces of bodies of all lumbar vertebrae and length of sacral canal. Readings of adjacent groups were compared and results were analyzed by using Student's 't' test. Lumbar canal starts growing in length significantly in group III foetuses onward. There was consistency in the growth of lumbar canal diameters with gestational age at all levels. Heights of vertebral bodies of Ist two lumbar vertebrae showed variability in some adjacent groups. La porción lumbosacra del canal espinal requiere una atención especial; es un sitio frecuentemente implicado en la espina bífida, el síndrome de médula anclada y algunas otras patologías como tumores de grasa en la columna vertebral, quistes y siringomelia. El diagnóstico y el tratamiento de los defectos del tubo neural requieren de un conocimiento preciso de la morfometría del canal vertebral lumbosacro. Existen diversos informes radiológicos sobre mediciones morfométricas en fetos humanos por parte de diversos investigadores, pero estos poseen una variabilidad inherente debido a las técnicas de imagen, posicionamiento del paciente, técnicas de medición del observador y, las variaciones normales y patológicas. Para superar todas estas limitaciones, para las mediciones directas se utilizó un caliper vernier. 30 fetos humanos conservados en formalina, de todas las edades y de ambos sexos, sin anomalías congénitas craneovertebrales, fueron obtenidos del museo del Departamento de Anatomía, J. N. Facultad de Medicina de la UMA, Aligarh. Los fetos fueron divididos en cinco grupos (I-V) sobre la base de su edad gestacional. El grupo I de fetos fueron los menores de 17 semanas, el II de 17-20 semanas, el III de 21-25 semanas, IV de 26 a 30 semanas, V de más de 30 semanas. Cada grupo contenía 6 fetos de ambos sexos (1:1/H:M)). Los parámetros morfométricos tomados en cuenta fueron la longitud del canal lumbar, el diámetro transversal máximo del canal vertebral lumbar en diferentes niveles, la altura de las superficies posteriores de los cuerpos de todas las vértebras lumbares y la longitud del canal sacro. Las mediciones de los grupos fueron comparadas y analizadas mediante el uso de la prueba de "t".
