RESUMO

Introduction: An effective referral system is necessary to ensure quality and an optimum continuum of care. In the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, an e-referral system known as the Saudi Medical Appointments and Referrals Centre (SMARC), has been fully functioning since 2019. This study aims to explore the rate of medical e-referral request acceptance in the KSA, and to study the factors associated with acceptance. Methods: This period cross-sectional study utilised secondary collected data from the SMARC e-referral system. The data spans both 2020 and 2021 and covers the entirety of the KSA. Bivariate analyses and binary logistic regression analyses were performed to compute adjusted Odds Ratios (aORs) and 95% confidence intervals. Results: Of the total 632,763 referral requests across the 2 years, 469,073 requests (74.13%) were accepted. Absence of available machinery was a significant predictor for referral acceptance compared to other reasons. Acceptance was highest for children under 14 with 28,956 (75.48%) and 63,979 (75.48%) accepted referrals, respectively. Patients requiring critical care from all age groups also had the highest acceptance including 6,237 referrals for paediatric intensive care unit (83.54%) and 34,126 referrals for intensive care unit (79.65%). All lifesaving referrals, 42,087 referrals, were accepted (100.00%). Psychiatric patients were observed to have the highest proportion for accepted referrals with 8,170 requests (82.50%) followed by organ transplantations with 1,005 requests (80.92%). Sex was seen to be a significant predictor for referrals, where the odds of acceptances for females increased by 2% compared to their male counterparts (95% CI = 1.01-1.04). Also, proportion of acceptance was highest for the Eastern business unit compared to all other units. External referrals were 32% less likely to be accepted than internal referrals (95% CI = 0.67-0.69). Conclusion: The current findings indicate that the e-referral system is mostly able to cater to the health services of the most vulnerable of patients. However, there remains areas for health policy improvement, especially in terms of resource allocation.

RESUMO

In the past three decades, significant improvements have occurred in the study of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). DMD is a rare, severe neuromuscular disease that causes death due to cardiovascular and respiratory complications among affected boys. Since the 1980s, ongoing preclinical and clinical studies have been conducted to explore the disease in depth and discover potential therapeutic strategies. In Saudi Arabia, it is unclear whether health services and research efforts are keeping pace with global achievements. Therefore, this review aims to explore the diagnostic and management strategies and research efforts in Saudi Arabia over the past three decades. I searched the PubMed/Medline, Scopus, and Web of Science databases and included all published articles on the epidemiology, genetics, diagnosis, and management of DMD/BMD in this review. The findings suggest a lack of local standardized diagnostic strategies, a poor understanding of epidemiology and common pathogenic variants, and a critical need for preclinical and clinical research. At the time of writing, no such comprehensive review has been published. Challenges, limitations, and future perspectives are also discussed in this article.

RESUMO

Background and objectives Problematic use of smartphones among healthcare workers can affect their performance, patient care, safety, care outcomes, and patient satisfaction. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of problematic use of smartphones and the relationship between the problematic use of smartphones and sleep quality among healthcare workers in Qassim, Saudi Arabia. Methods We enrolled 393 healthcare workers conveniently selected online for this cross-sectional survey. We assessed the problematic use of smartphones using the short version of the Smartphone Addiction Scale. For sleep quality, we used the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Linear regression was used to assess the association of problematic use of smartphones with sleep quality. IBM SPSS Statistics, version 23.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY) was used for analyses. Results The prevalence of smartphone addiction (SMA) was 59.0%, and 30.5% were at high risk for addiction. The mean PSQI score was 11.56 ± 2.1 out of 21. It was found that female gender was associated with poor sleep quality (adjusted B = 0.45, p-value = 0.049). On the other hand, SMA was also significantly associated with poor sleep quality (adjusted B = 0.90, p-value = 0.016). Conclusion There is a high prevalence of problematic use of smartphones among healthcare workers, which is associated with poor sleep quality. Given the significant occurrence of problematic smartphone use among healthcare professionals and its detrimental effects on sleep quality, it is crucial for public health initiatives to devise and execute suitable preventive measures, such as smartphone use policies at work and education of workers.

RESUMO

Clinical Ethics Consultation (CEC) aims to resolve ethical dilemmas at the bedside. Through a structured process, CEC allows practitioners and patients to consult ethicists at times of moral conflict or uncertainty. Over the past few decades, CEC has become an invaluable part of healthcare practice. In Saudi Arabia, however, CEC services remain inexplicably underutilized. This study attempts to understand the factors associated with Saudi physicians' utilization of CEC to better meet the needs of practitioners and patients. Results indicate that although physicians routinely experience moral dilemmas, they seldom request a CEC. This is not due to unfamiliarity, lack of accessibility, or suspicion of ethical expertise. Rather, reluctance is likely due to an ingrained medical cultural stronghold that pressures practitioners to act heroically, and to resolve ethical dilemmas independently. Recommendations to improve the utilization of CEC services include wider availability, active collaborations with clinical practitioners, routine quality improvements, and managerial and national support.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND:  The global geriatric population is increasing, leading to a higher prevalence of non-communicable diseases, including depression. This condition often remains underdiagnosed and untreated disease. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 130 primary healthcare physicians (PCPs) in Buraidah to assess their practices in diagnosing geriatric depression from March 2023 to March 2024. After ethical committee approval, data were collected through a self-administered questionnaire, entered, cleaned, and analyzed with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, IBM Corp., Version 21.0, Armonk, NY). Informed consent was obtained and the confidentiality of the participant information was maintained. Statistical tests, including the Chi-square test, were used for inference. RESULTS: Out of 130 PCPs, 85.4% (n=111) were diagnosing depression during their clinical practice. The most common depression scale used in their regular practice was the patient health questionnaire (PHQ)-2 (70%, n=91), followed by the Geriatric Depression Scale (53.8%, n=70). Nearly 26.2% (n=34) of physicians responded that there is no need for routine lab tests for the diagnosis of depression. Concerning the initial plan of depression management, nearly 76.2% (n=99) of physicians preferred non-pharmacological treatment. Regarding barriers to diagnosis of depression in elderly patients, nearly 76.2% (n=99) mentioned the need for more training about geriatric depression, followed by 70% for both short consultation time and the need for Ministry of Health guidelines. There was a statistically significant association observed between <35 years of age group and a preference for a high percentage of pharmacological therapy (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Based on the findings of the study, there was a good number (85.4%) of PCPs diagnosing depression in their clinics, and also three-fourths of the physicians (76.2%) preferred non-pharmacological treatment. Only one-fourth (26.2%) of the PCPs mentioned no lab is required for the diagnosis of depression.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Gallstone disease, commonly referred to as cholelithiasis, is a prevalent medical condition that has substantial global implications. Due to its numerous benefits, such as cheaper costs and shorter hospital stays, laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) has replaced open surgery as the most often performed surgical method for treating a range of biliary problems in wealthy countries. Any medical procedure's long-term patient well-being must be assessed, starting with the quality of life (QoL), patient satisfaction, and postoperative healing. AIM: The current study aims to evaluate patient satisfaction and QoL after undergoing LC in Al-Qunfudhah Governorate. METHODS:  A cross-sectional study was conducted targeting all patients who underwent LC in Al-Qunfudhah Governorate during the period from January to March 2024. The online survey was initiated by the study researchers after an intensive literature review and experts' consultation. The validated questionnaire was uploaded online using Google Forms and distributed electronically via social media apps. RESULTS: The current study included records of 200 participants where the highest proportion falls within the 26 to 35 age group, comprising 57 individuals (28.5%). In terms of gender, males represent the majority, with 109 participants (54.5%). A total of 122 individuals (61.0%) reported being satisfied with their procedures. Conversely, 18 patients (9.0%) expressed dissatisfaction. The majority of participants under investigation expressed satisfaction with their overall QoL after undergoing LC, with 84 patients (42.0%) reporting satisfaction and 67 patients (33.5%) reporting being very satisfied. Additionally, only a small proportion of participants expressed dissatisfaction or very dissatisfaction Conclusion: In summary, the current study demonstrated high satisfaction with the LC treatment and highly reported QoL, which were mostly attributable to a number of factors such as the staff's cooperation, the lack of severe problems, and the sufficiency of the pre-surgery information supplied.

RESUMO

The risk of DEB is more prevalent in girls, particularly during adolescence. The onset of DEB can be triggered by many inter-related factors, including biological, social, parental, and psychosocial. To date, very little is known about the determinants of DEBs in Saudi adolescent girls. Using a qualitative analysis, this study explored potential determinants of DEB among adolescent girls in Riyadh. Eighteen semi-structured interviews were carried out with adolescent girls (mean age = 14.06, SD = 0.87) who reported a high risk of DEB (EAT-26 ≥ 20) in intermediate and secondary schools in Riyadh. The mean weight was 51 kg (SD = 11.8) with BMI ranging from 14.18 kg/m2 to 27.51 kg/m2. EAT-26 scores ranged from 21 to 42 (M = 26.8, SD = 5.6). Data were transcribed and revised, then themes and sub-themes were assigned using MAXQDA 24. The most common DEBs reported were dieting and binging, followed by induced vomiting. Major themes were related to negative cognitions, conscious imitation/copying behaviours, bullying, comparisons, and negative comments. Some participants identified the possibility of biological and familial factors in increasing the likelihood of DEB. Our findings provide a framework that could be used to increase understanding of DEB and inform the development of interventions to address underlying causes of DEB in Saudi adolescent girls.

RESUMO

Background The elderly population continues to grow worldwide, including in Saudi Arabia. Caring for older people with Alzheimer's and dementia disease is very challenging and merits specific skills, knowledge, and attitudes among nurses and nursing students. Consequently, nursing students must be prepared with the appropriate knowledge and attitude to care for patients affected by Alzheimer's in their future professions. This study aimed to investigate the knowledge and attitudes of Alzheimer's disease (AD) among bachelor's nursing students in Saudi Arabia. Methods This study used a descriptive cross-sectional design, and data were collected via an online questionnaire comprising two main instruments: the Alzheimer's Disease Knowledge Scale (ADKS) and the Dementia Attitudes Scale (DAS). A total of 477 undergraduate nursing students participated in the study at four universities in four regions of Saudi Arabia. Result The results indicated that Saudi nursing students exhibited insufficient knowledge regarding individuals with AD, reflected by a mean ADKS score of 13.83 out of 30. Yet, they displayed positive attitudes, as indicated by a mean DAS score of 99.29 out of 140. Nursing students in their third year and those who had family members with AD had a higher significant score regarding their knowledge of AD than nursing students who were in their fourth year or those who did not have family members who had AD. Additionally, nursing students aged 20 to 25 years, as well as nursing students in their fourth year, had more positive attitudes toward working with AD patients. Conclusions In conclusion, this study revealed that although many nursing students have a positive attitude toward working with AD patients, they have insufficient knowledge of AD. Therefore, there is an urgent necessity for enhanced educational initiatives, encompassing both greater depth and improved quality, as well as increased clinical training to address this knowledge gap among nursing students in Saudi Arabia.

RESUMO

Objectives To evaluate the knowledge and awareness about cervical cancer and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination among medical undergraduates at Northern Border University. Methods It was a cross-sectional study done on students selected conveniently from the College of Medicine, Northern Border University, Arar. The data were collected regarding knowledge about HPV infection and vaccine awareness using a validated questionnaire. Results A total of 200 students responded to the questionnaires, with 104 (52%) being male students and 120 (60%) being clinical years of MBBS. The mean knowledge score was 17.12 ± 2.73 out of 24, which was labeled as moderate knowledge about cervical cancer and HPV. Almost two-thirds of the students responded correctly to the etiology and risk factors of cervical cancer, while only half of the students knew the correct screening intervals for cervical cancer. The awareness of students about the HPV vaccine was deficient, and the mean score was estimated to be 4.20 ± 0.79 out of nine. Female students and students in clinical years showed significantly better understanding and awareness about cervical cancer and its vaccine and showed greater vaccine acceptability as compared to male students and students in preclinical years. Conclusion The present study shows moderate knowledge about cervical cancer but deficient awareness of medical students about the HPV vaccine. However, the students were willing to get educated about cervical cancer and its vaccine and showed a favorable opinion towards vaccinating the schoolgirls and educating their patients as future physicians. The information can be considered a benchmark on knowledge and awareness levels and can be utilized to modify medical curricula and develop efficient awareness programs.

RESUMO

Background: Healthcare professionals and educators closely monitor the occurrence of climacteric symptoms in women's primes. Knowledge and perception of menopause play a crucial role in improving quality of life. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and perceptions of menopause among Saudi women and identify its predictors. This study is the first of its kind in the southern region of Saudi Arabia. Methods: Conducted in accordance with the STROBE guidelines, this cross-sectional study was carried out in the Jazan region from May 2022 to January 2023 and involved 480 Saudi women who provided consent. Data were collected through interviews using a validated questionnaire and random sampling. The questionnaire consisted of four parts: informed consent, demographics, 21 knowledge questions, and ten menopause perception questions. The validity of the content and the internal consistency were evaluated before data collection. Primary healthcare centers were randomly selected from four governorates with a proportional sample size to the population. Descriptive analysis, Pearson correlation, and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed using IBM-SPSS. Results: Among the participants, 64 % were under 40 years old, 80 % had experienced menarche between the ages of 10 and 15, 48 % were employed, approximately half held a bachelor's degree, and they had a good family income. The mean knowledge score of the participants was 48.87 ± 11.72, with a minimum score of 27 and a maximum score of 78. In terms of knowledge categories, 56.3 % of the participants (N = 270) were classified as having low knowledge, while 43.8 % (N = 210) were classified as having high knowledge. Most of the participants had positive perceptions and agreed that menopause is a natural event in women's lives. There was a significant positive correlation between knowledge and perception (R = 0.219, P < 0.01). Variable findings were observed regarding the role of explanatory variables in women's knowledge of menopause between univariate and multivariate models. The results of the multivariate model showed that age (46-50 years, OR = 0.42), having children (OR = 1.09), residence (OR = 0.45-5.73) and family income categories (medium: OR = 3.98, good: OR = 3.78, and excellent: OR = 1.95) had a significant impact on knowledge, highlighting the correlation between demographic factors and knowledge. Conclusions: Based on the study findings, we recommend implementing workplace and community-based activities to increase women's awareness of menopause and incorporating it as an integral part of counseling sessions for women in this age group. Therefore, the results of the study will be shared with the relevant authorities responsible for women's health, enabling them to effectively support and educate women.

RESUMO

Background: Despite its significant prevalence worldwide, atopy and allergic diseases continue to need more studies, with a need for published articles describing the prevalence of atopy and allergic diseases in Saudi society. The study aimed to determine the prevalence of atopic dermatitis diseases among college students at Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University. Methods: The Cross-sectional study was conducted in Saudi Arabia among college students at Imam Mohammed bin Saud Islamic University in Riyadh based on self-report Asthma and Allergies questionnaires (ISSAC questionnaire, atopic dermatitis part). Results: Seven hundred ninety-seven (797) students from 11 colleges participated in the study. About half (47.6%) aged between 21 and 24, and 73.7% were females. More than one-third (34.8%) had atopic dermatitis during the last six months, while 30.7% of the participants reported having itchy rash in the past 12 months, and 33.8% were diagnosed with eczema in any life interval. Age is not one of the significant factors affecting the prevalence of atopic dermatitis. However, the prevalence of atopic dermatitis slightly increases with age (P = 0.062). Atopic dermatitis was significantly higher among female students (39.7%) than 21.0% among male students (P = 0.000). College level nor GPA had no significant impact on the prevalence of atopic dermatitis (P = 0.238 and 0.884, respectively). Conclusion: Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University students have a high prevalence of atopic dermatitis, which may indicate a higher prevalence of allergens. Females and older participants were more liable to reported atopic dermatitis.

RESUMO

Background: Healthcare work is a major risk for having musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), including low back pain (LBP). This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of LBP and define its associated risk factors among resident physicians. Material and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted among all resident physicians of all specialties in Abha city during the period from July 2020 to September 2020. Data were collected using an online pre-structured data collection tool. The Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) (back pain section) was applied to assess the effect of LBP on the residents' ability to perform job duties effectively. Results: A total of 312 resident physicians responded. Their age ranged between 25 and 41 years. Males represented 57.7% of them. The prevalence of LBP was 64.7%. The most common reported aggravating factors for LBP were working in uncomfortable posture (73.3%), standing for long periods (64.4%), and long sitting sessions (51.5%). Regarding the pain-relieving factors, sleeping ranked first (60.4%), followed by taking analgesics (48.5%) and maintaining a good posture (35.6%). Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that obese subjects were at higher risk than underweight subjects to develop LBP (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) =6.18, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.26-30.34, P = 0.025). Compared to resident physicians without family history of back pain, those with such history were at almost 4-fold higher risk of developing LBP (AOR = 3.90, 95% CI: 2.33-6.52, P < 0.001). Conclusion: LBP is a very prevalent problem among resident physicians, particularly obese subjects and those with family history of back pain. LBP adversely impacts the work performance of the affected physicians.

RESUMO

Background There is an increase in the geriatric population globally. Also, in Saudi Arabia, the elderly population is expected to become a significant proportion of the total population in future decades. To provide comprehensive care to the geriatric population, an assessment of their functional capacity is crucial. Objectives This study aims to assess functional capacity and identify factors associated with functional impairment among geriatric patients at primary healthcare centers (PHCCs) in Qassim Region, Saudi Arabia. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 310 geriatric patients, including 155 males and 155 females, attending PHCCs. An interviewer-administered survey was conducted from June through October 2023. The interviews were conducted by trained physicians. To assess functional capacity, the Katz index of independence in activities of daily living (Katz ADL), the Lawton-Brody instrumental activities of daily living (Lawton-Brody IADL) scale, and Wudu (ablution) performance were used as assessment tools. The data was collected via a Google Form (Google LLC, California, USA) through an interviewer-administered questionnaire. The data was analyzed using SPSS Statistics version 21 (IBM Corp. Released 2012. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 21.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.). Results The mean age of the study participants was 71.9 (±7.02) years. A vast majority (91.9%) had chronic diseases. Among basic ADL, the respondents had a high level of independence in feeding (99.4%) and transferring (95.5%), while there was a low level of independence in bathing (13.2%). The analysis of the Lawton-Brody IADL showed independence in medication management (75.8%) and telephone use (72.9%); however, 54.8% of the study participants were unable to perform laundry-related activities independently. Around three-fourths (76.8%) of the study participants were able to perform Wudu independently. IADL independence was statistically significantly associated (p<0.001) with age, gender, education, and chronic diseases. The Katz ADL and Lawton-Brody IADL were correlated (r=0.607, p<0.0001), and Wudu performance was positively correlated with both indices (r=0.636, r=0.60, p<0.0001). Conclusions Assessing elderly functional capacity and addressing the risk factors of functional impairment is crucial to improving the quality of life in this segment of the population. Future research is needed to validate the use of Wudu performance as an assessment tool for functional capacity in the elderly population.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: This narrative review focuses on the role of mobile MRI and CT units in addressing the challenges of healthcare accessibility and patient wait times in Saudi Arabia. It underscores the growing demand for diagnostic imaging amid infrastructural and geographical barriers, emphasizing mobile units as innovative solutions for enhancing radiological services across diverse Saudi landscapes. The purpose of this study is to assess how these mobile technologies can mitigate service delays, improve patient outcomes, and support healthcare delivery in remote or underserved areas, reflecting on global trends towards more dynamic, patient-centered healthcare models. METHODS: This review utilizes an expanded database search and refined keywords to ensure comprehensive literature coverage. The study focused on peer-review articles and grey literatures that directly examined the impact of these mobile units on healthcare accessibility, wait times, and service delivery. A thematic analysis identified significant contributions to accessibility improvements, emergency responses, and rural healthcare, highlighting areas for further research and policy development. DISCUSSION: Mobile units have advanced technical specifications with high-field magnets and multi-slice CT scanners on par with fixed facilities. They prioritize patient comfort and safety with examination areas, control rooms, and waiting areas. Telemedicine capabilities allow real-time image transmission to specialists. Strategic deployment can address workforce shortages by distributing services equitably. Mobile units represent cost-effective solutions to expand healthcare access without fixed infrastructure. CONCLUSION: Integration of mobile MRI and CT units in Saudi Arabia can transform access to diagnostic imaging by decentralizing services and directly reaching patients, including rural areas. Evidence shows mobile units reduce diagnostic delays and optimize resource use. Despite challenges, strategic investments and collaborations can overcome obstacles to make radiological services more equitable, flexible and patient-focused in Saudi Arabia.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has introduced major changes in the resuscitation practices of cardiac arrest victims. AIM: We aimed to compare the characteristics and outcomes of patients who sustained in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) during the early COVID-19 pandemic period (2020) with those during the late COVID-19 pandemic period (2021). METHODS: This was a retrospective review of adult patients sustaining IHCA at a single academic centre. We compared characteristics and outcomes of IHCA for 5 months in 2020 with those experiencing IHCA for 5 months in 2021. RESULTS: Patients sustaining IHCA during the early COVID-19 pandemic period had higher rates of delayed epinephrine administration of more than 5 min (13.4% vs. 1.9%; p < 0.01), more frequent delays in the initiation of chest compressions (55.6% vs. 17.9%; p < 0.01), and were intubated less often (23.0% vs. 59.3%; p < 0.01). In terms of outcomes, both return of spontaneous circulation (35.8% vs. 51.2%; p < 0.01) and survival to hospital discharge rates (13.9% vs. 30.2%; p < 0.01) were lower during the early COVID-19 pandemic period. CONCLUSIONS: The early COVID-19 pandemic period was associated with delays in epinephrine administration and chest compression initiation for IHCA. Moreover, both return of spontaneous circulation and survival to hospital discharge were lower during the early COVID-19 pandemic period.

RESUMO

Background The thyroid gland is responsible for regulating many aspects of body functions. Despite their global prevalence, thyroid disorders often go underdiagnosed, which can lead to serious health complications. In Saudi Arabia, the overall prevalence was 49.76%, among which subclinical hypothyroidism was the most prevalent type. Raising awareness and knowledge about thyroid diseases and their risk factors is essential for the prevention and early treatment of these disorders. Aim and objectives To assess the awareness of thyroid diseases and their risk factors among the residents of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, as well as understand their attitudes and underlying influencing factors toward thyroid health. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, from January 2023 to December 2023. The study included a diverse sample of Saudi and non-Saudi participants aged 18 to 65 years. A self-administered online questionnaire translated into Arabic was used to collect information. Results The study involved 393 participants, 72.5% female and 27.5% male. Most participants held a bachelor's degree or higher (78.1%). Hypothyroidism was the most prevalent diagnosed thyroid disease (14.0%). Only 20% of participants had good knowledge. Respondents were relatively less aware of the risks associated with pregnancy and the postpartum period (35%), medications such as amiodarone (26%), eating soya beans (22%), and gastrointestinal tract (GIT) symptoms of thyroid diseases (36%). Attitudes toward thyroid health were generally negative (85.5%). However, a significant association was noted between a history of thyroid disease and a positive attitude (p = 0.002). Educational level and employment status were strong determinants of knowledge levels (p = 0.036 and 0.005, respectively). A positive correlation was found between knowledge levels and attitudes (r = 0.321, p < 0.001). Conclusion The study showed a low level of awareness among participants living in Jeddah, especially the unemployed and those with low levels of education. Their unawareness of the possible risks of thyroid diseases during pregnancy should be thoroughly addressed by public campaigns.

RESUMO

Objective: This study investigates the prevalence of lipid abnormalities among adolescents diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) and explores potential associations with microalbuminuria and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors.Research Design and Methods: A retrospective study analyzed lipid profiles, microalbuminuria, and CVD risk in adolescents with T1DM. Six hundred individuals were assessed for lipid levels, BMI, and microalbuminuria. Results: Dyslipidemia prevalence was 59.7 %, with 22.7 % exhibiting abnormal total cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides (TG), and 15.8 % with elevated TC alone. A2 microalbuminuria was found in 59.2 %, with 14.6 % showing A3. Females had higher A2 prevalence and mild eGFR decrease (P = 0.02). Lipid levels correlated significantly with microalbuminuria (TC: r = 0.761; TG: r = 0.572, P = 0.03 and 0.04, respectively). The prevalence of high total cholesterol (TC) + high triglycerides (TG), as well as the high TG alone, was considerably higher in patients belonging to the A2 Microalbuminuria group. AIP, HbA1c, and UACR showed a strong positive correlation (r = 0.542, P = 0.04; r = 0.621, P = 0.02). Conclusion: Our study highlights the prevalence of elevated or borderline lipid levels among adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM), indicating a heightened risk of dyslipidemia in this population. Particularly concerning is the significantly increased incidence of dyslipidemia among young individuals with T1DM, with females exhibiting a notable susceptibility to cardiovascular disease (CVD) due to dyslipidemia's impact on the Atherogenic Index of Plasma (AIP). Furthermore, Microalbuminuria, specifically type A2 and A3, was prevalent among our study participants, with females showing a significantly higher occurrence of A2 microalbuminuria compared to males. The association between microalbuminuria and dyslipidemia, especially the combination of high total cholesterol (TC) and high triglycerides (TG), emphasizes the importance of comprehensive screening protocols for both microalbuminuria and dyslipidemia in managing the cardiovascular risk profile of individuals with T1DM.
