Changes in physiological and biochemical parameters are crucial for the reproductive performance and health of perinatal ewes. This study investigated the temporal variations in feed intake, nutrient digestibility, serum parameters, and ruminal fermentation on days 21, 14, and 7 before lambing (Q21, Q14, and Q7) and days 3, 7, and 14 after lambing (H3, H7, and H14). The results showed that dry matter intake (DMI) and glucose (Glu) gradually decreased (p < 0.05) before lambing and increased (p < 0.05) after lambing. The digestibility of dry matter (DMD), crude protein (CPD), and acid detergent fiber (ADFD) increased (p < 0.05) before lambing, then decreased (p < 0.05) on day H3, and then increased (p < 0.05) on day H14. The rumen pH, NH3-N, and triglycerides (TG) gradually increased (p < 0.05) before lambing and were higher (p < 0.05) on day Q7 than after lambing. The concentrations of acetate, butyrate, and total volatile fatty acids (T-VFA) were lower (p < 0.05) on day Q7 than those on days Q21 and Q14, then increased (p < 0.05) after lambing. Total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) concentrations gradually decreased (p < 0.05) in perinatal ewes. BHBA and NEFA concentrations were lower (p < 0.05) on day Q21 than those from days Q14 to H14. The rumen microbiota compositions were different (p < 0.05) in perinatal ewes, and g_Anaerovibrio, g_Lachnobacterium, and g_Schwartzia were positively correlated (p < 0.05) with DMI, Glu, acetate, propionate, and T-VFA, and negatively correlated (p < 0.05) with LDL-C. g_Bacillus was negatively correlated (p < 0.05) with DMI, Glu, acetate, propionate, butyrate, and T-VFA, but positively correlated (p < 0.05) with rumen pH and LDL-C. In summary, the DMI, nutrient digestibility, rumen fermentation, and serum parameters changed during the perinatal period of ewes, and the changes in DMI, serum glucose, acetate, propionate, and T-VFA were related to the rumen bacteria.

Energy feed can provide animals with balanced nutrition, thereby enhancing their growth performance. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dietary energy levels on the growth performance, serum metabolites, and meat quality of Jersey cattle-yaks. A total of 24 male Jersey cattle-yaks were randomly divided into three groups. Each group was fed diets with metabolizable energy levels of 8.21 MJ/kg (LE), 9.50 MJ/kg (ME), and 10.65 MJ/kg (HE), respectively. The HE and ME groups showed significantly higher final body weight, average daily gain (ADG), and feed efficiency compared to the LE group (p < 0.05). The glucose (GLU) and total cholesterol (TC) concentrations were significantly increased in the serum of the ME and HE groups (p < 0.05). The low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels were significantly higher in the serum of the HE group than in the ME group (p < 0.05). Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels exhibited a significant decrease with increasing metabolizable energy levels in the diet (p < 0.05). Increasing dietary energy levels enhances the eye muscle area and intramuscular fat content of Jersey cattle-yaks (p < 0.05), with no effect on pH45 min, pH24 h, and shear force. In the HE group, the levels of heneicosanoic acid (C21:0), palmitoleic acid (C16:1), elaidic acid (C18:1n9t), and eicosadienoic acid (C20:2n6) were notably elevated (p < 0.05) when compared to the LE group. We concluded that a higher dietary energy level enhanced the growth performance and meat quality traits of male Jersey cattle-yaks.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) and transurethral columnar balloon dilatation of the prostate (TUCBDP) in the treatment of BPH. METHODS: This study included 218 BPH patients treated in Qinhuangdao Workers' Hospital from July 2021 to November 2022, 109 by TURP and the other 109 by TUCBDP. We followed up the patients for 12 months, observed their postoperative recovery, complications, serum pain, inflammatory index, cytokine level, urodynamic index, symptom improvement and quality of life (QOL) and compared the data obtained between the two groups of patients. RESULTS: At 12 months after surgery, the total effectiveness rate was significantly higher in the TUCBDP than in the TURP group (93.58% vs 84.40%, P< 0.05), and the postoperative recovery was better in the former than in the latter (P< 0.05). Compared with the baseline, the levels of serum prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), substance P, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were remarkably increased in both of the groups on the first day after surgery (P< 0.05), more significantly in the TURP than in the TUCBDP group (P< 0.05), while the levels of serum PSA and E2 decreased and the T level elevated in all the patients at 3 months postoperatively (P< 0.05), more significantly in the TUCBDP than in the TURP group (P< 0.05). Before and at 3 and 12 months after operation, the postvoid residual urine volume (PVR) and NIH-CPSI, IPSS and QOL scores showed a decreasing trend, while the maximum urinary flow rate (Qmax), maximum cystometric capacity (MCC) and maximum urethral closure pressure (MUCP) exhibited an increasing trend in both of the two groups, even more significantly in the TUCBDP than in the TURP group (P< 0.05). CONCLUSION: TUCBDP is advantageous over TURP in promoting postoperative recovery, improving QOL, reducing postoperative pain, inflammation and complications, regulating the levels of serum cytokines, and improving urodynamics and clinical symptoms in BPH patients. However, with the extension of postoperative time, the two strategies are basically comparable in improving the urodynamics, symptoms and QOL of the patients.

Objective: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most common complications of pregnancy, which is increasing annually. GDM can cause serious harm to both the mother and the offspring. However, the clinical indicators that predict pregnancy outcomes with GDM remain limited. Methods: This study included 3,229 pregnancies. Inflammatory markers were defective in the mother's peripheral blood. Also, the Chi-square test, logistic regression analyses and Spearman rank correlation coefficient were performed to evaluate inflammatory markers with pregnancy outcomes. The association between inflammatory markers and pregnancy outcomes was analyzed. The optimal cut-off values of inflammatory markers were calculated. Results: Finally, 3,229 women were included. 1852 (57.36%) participants suffered good pregnancy outcomes. This study revealed that the maternal age, the baseline BMI (kg/m2), the times of parity, and the level of lymphocyte, SII and SIRI significantly increased in poor pregnancy outcomes groups. Additionally, inflammatory markers, such as white blood cells (WBC), neutrophils, monocytes, platelet counts, lymphocytes, systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) and systemic inflammation response index (SIRI) were related to pregnancy outcomes. Furthermore, the results revealed that the SII level had the highest odd rates (OR) [OR = 6.957; 95% CI (5.715-8.468)], followed by SIRI level [OR = 2.948; 95% CI (2.382-3.649)], the WBC counts [OR = 1.930; 95% CI (0.901-2.960)], the lymphocyte counts [OR = 1.668; 95% CI (1.412-1.970)], and baseline BMI [OR = 1.050; 95% (1.021-1.080)]. Conclusion: This study presented that the baseline SII and SIRI levels can be valuable biochemical markers to predict the pregnancy outcome with GDM with non-invasive procedures. They can help identify high-risk pregnant women with GDM early, provide a personalized intervention in time, and enhance perinatal surveillance.

This study investigated the effects of partially replacing corn with elephant grass dry matter (air drass) on growth performance, serum parameters, carcass traits, and nutrient digestibility in geese. A total of 360 one-day-old Hortobágyi geese were randomly divided into three groups: control (basic diet), 12 % elephant grass, and 24 % elephant grass. The geese were raised for 70 days. The results showed that compared to the control, 12 % elephant grass had no adverse effects on final body weight, feed/gain ratio, mortality, serum liver and kidney function markers. However, 24 % elephant grass significantly reduced the final body weight (P < 0.001) and feed/gain ratio (P = 0.026) compared to the control group. Both experiment groups had decreased serum aspartate aminotransferase (P < 0.001), alanine aminotransferase (P < 0.001), alkaline phosphatase (P < 0.001), triglycerides (P < 0.001), and total cholesterol (P < 0.001). The addition of 12 % and 24 % elephant grass reduced abdominal fat (P = 0.002), but it had no significant effect on slaughter rate, half-bore rate, full-bore rate, breast muscle rate and leg muscle rate. For nutrient digestibility, 12 % elephant grass improved neutral detergent fiber digestibility compared to the control group (P = 0.026). The 24 % grass group had reduced Ca absorption (P = 0.020). Overall, the findings suggest that partially replacing corn with 12 % elephant grass in goose diet can maintain growth performance and carcass traits.It also has no negative effect on nutrient digestibility while improving serum parameters.

The raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) is a typical omnivore possessing wide dietary adaptability and tolerance to rough feeding, which may be attributed to its intestinal microbiota. The study aimed to investigate the effect of dietary alfalfa meal levels on the growth performance, nutrient apparent digestibility, serum parameters, and intestinal microbiota of raccoon dogs. Sixty raccoon dogs were randomly divided into four dietary treatments containing 0% (AM0), 5% (AM5), 10% (AM10), and 15% (AM15) alfalfa meal for a 60-day experiment. The results showed that compared to raccoon dogs fed the AM0 diet, those fed the AM5 and AM10 diets had no significant difference in growth performance, while those fed the AM15 diet experienced a significant decrease. Raccoon dogs fed the AM5 diet had no significant effect on the nutrient apparent digestibility. Dietary supplementation with alfalfa meal significantly decreased serum urea levels and increased the antioxidant capacity of raccoon dogs. The intestinal microbiome analysis showed that the richness and diversity of colonic microbiota significantly increased in the AM15 group. With the increase in dietary alfalfa meal levels, the relative abundance of fiber-degrading bacteria in the colon of raccoon dogs, such as Treponema, Phascolarctobacterium, and Christensenellaceae R-7 group, increased. However, the relative abundance of pathogenic bacteria, including Anaerobiospirillum, decreased. In conclusion, the inclusion of 5% alfalfa meal in the raccoon dogs' diet had no effect on growth performance, but it exhibited the potential to improve serum antioxidant capacity and intestinal microbiota. This indicates that raccoon dogs have a certain tolerance to the addition of alfalfa meal in their diet.

Objective: To explore the nature and extent of possible residual complaints among Dutch hypothyroid patients using thyroid replacement therapy, we initiated a comprehensive study measuring health-related quality of life (QoL), daily functioning, and hypothyroidism-associated symptoms in patients and control persons. Methods: An online survey measuring thyroid-specific QoL (ThyPRO), daily functioning, and hypothyroidism-associated symptoms (ThySHI) was distributed among treated hypothyroid patients and control individuals. The advertising text was formulated in an open-ended manner. Patients also provided their most recent thyroid blood values and their thyroid medication. Results: There was a large-sized impairment of QoL (Cohen's d = 1.04, +93 % ThyPRO score) in hypothyroid patients on thyroid replacement therapy (n = 1195) as compared to controls (n = 236). Daily functioning was significantly reduced i.e., general health (-38 %), problems with vigorous- (+64 %) and moderate activities (+77 %). Almost 80 % of patients reported having complaints despite thyroid medication and in-range thyroid blood values, with 75 % expressing a desire for improved treatment options for hypothyroidism (total n = 1194). Hypothyroid patients experienced 2.8 times more intense hypothyroidism-associated symptoms than controls (n = 865, n = 203 resp). Patients' median reported serum concentrations were: TSH 0.90 mU/L, FT4 17.0 pmol/L, and FT3 2.67 pmol/L, with 52 % having low T3 levels (<3.1 pmol/L). The QoL was not found to be related to age, sex, BMI, menopausal status, stress, serum thyroid parameters, the origin and duration of hypothyroidism, the type of thyroid medication, or the LT4 dose used. Conclusions: Our study revealed major reductions in quality of life and daily functioning, and nearly three times more intense hypothyroidism-associated symptoms in treated hypothyroid patients as compared to controls, despite treatment and largely in-range serum TSH/FT4 concentrations. The QoL was not associated with serum thyroid parameters. We recommend future research into the origin of persisting complaints and the development of improved treatment modalities for hypothyroidism.

Improvement of nutrient utilization to promote growth performance is always pursued in poultry. In this study, a total of 360 1-d-old male ducklings was randomly assigned to 3 treatments in terms of diet treatment groups. Three treatments were as follows: basal diet (Con group) or basal diet supplemented with 300 mg/kg multi-enzymes (ENZ group) or 500 mg/kg lysophospholipids (LPL group). On day 42, ducks were slaughtered for samplings. The results revealed that supplementary LPL improved the body weight (BW) at day 14 and average daily gain (ADG) during days 1 to 14 and improved the feed conversion rate (FCR) for the overall period (P < 0.05) by improving nutrient utilization of dry matter and ether extract (P < 0.05) compared with the Con group. Dietary ENZ improved the FCR from days 15-42 and 1-42, and nitrogen utilization (P < 0.05) compared with the Con group. Jejunal villus height and villus height/crypt depth ratio were higher (P < 0.05) in the LPL group and tended to be higher (P < 0.1) in the ENZ group compared to the Con group. Supplementation with either LPL or ENZ reduced interleukin-1ß concentration in jejunal mucus (P < 0.05). Both LPL and ENZ enhanced serum total superoxide dismutase activity (P < 0.05), whereas only supplementation with LPL elevated total antioxidant capacity (P < 0.05). In terms of cecal microbiota, microbial richness tended to be reduced by LPL, with low observed-OTUs and Chao1 (0.05 < P < 0.1). Supplementation with ENZ led to higher abundances of cellulolytic bacteria such as Fibrobacterota, [Eubacterium]_xylanophilum_group, and Bifidobacterium. Overall, both LPL and ENZ improved FCR, which may be relevant to ameliorative intestinal health, overall antioxidant ability, and cecal microbiome.


Well known in the industry, enhancing nutrient utilization in meat ducks is a vital sustainability tactic to manage production costs. This is especially relevant because meat ducks require more feed, and grain prices are on the rise. Lysophospholipids (LPL) have been confirmed to effectively emulsify fat, which boosts fat utilization. Additionally, multi-exogenous enzymes (ENZ) play a significant role in nutrient breakdown. Our feeding experiment on Cherry Vallery male ducks demonstrated that a dietary supplement of LPL at 500 mg/kg improves the body weight, average daily gain, and feed conversion rate during the starter period. It also elevates the feed conversion rate over the entire period, enhances ether extract utilization, and positively impacts jejunal morphology development in the finishing phase. However, LPL negatively affects the α-diversity of cecal flora. On the other hand, supplementing with 300 mg/kg ENZ improves the feed conversion rate throughout the period, increases nitrogen utilization in the finisher phase, diminishes interleukin-1ß levels in the jejunum, elevates superoxide dismutase in the serum, and promotes the prevalence of cellulolytic bacteria. In summary, feed supplemented with 500 mg/kg LPL and 300 mg/kg ENZ aids in reducing the FCR of meat ducks.

Background and objectives: Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an important autoimmune thyroid condition. It is characterized by lymphocytic congestion of the thyroid gland followed by progressive deterioration and fibrous substitution of the thyroid in the parenchymal structure. This study has provided insight into the variations of blood pro-inflammatory cytokine levels in patients with Hashimoto's disease and the key role of vitamin D levels among selected patients. Materials and Methods: A total of 144 participants including healthy controls and patients were studied in the current study in which 118 were female and 26 were male. The thyroid profile was evaluated in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and healthy controls. Results: The mean ± SD Free T4 in the patients was recorded as 14.0 ± 4.9 pg/mL, and TSH was 7.6 ± 2.5 IU/L, whereas the median ± IQR thyroglobulin antibodies (anti-TG) were 285 ± 142. Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (anti-TPO) were 160 ± 63.5, whereas in the healthy controls, the mean ± SD Free T4 was recorded as 17.2 ± 2.1 pg/mL, and TSH was 2.1 ± 1.4 IU/L, whereas the median ± IQR anti-TGs were 56.30 ± 46.06, and anti-TPO was 5.6 ± 5.12. The assessment of pro-inflammatory cytokines (pg/mL) and total Vitamin D levels (nmol/L) in patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis was recorded with values IL-1B 6.2 ± 0.8, IL-6 9.4 ± 0.4, IL-8 7.5 ± 0.5, IL-10 4.3 ± 0.1, IL-12 3.8 ± 0.5, TNF-α 7.6 ± 1.1, and total vitamin D 21.89 ± 3.5, whereas in healthy controls the mean ± SD IL-1B was 0.6 ± 0.1, IL-6 2.6 ± 0.5, IL-8 3.0 ± 1.2, IL-10 3.3 ± 1.3, IL-12 3.4 ± 0.4, TNF-α 1.4 ± 0.3 and total vitamin D was 42.26 ± 5.5. Conclusions: It was found that individuals with Hashimoto's thyroiditis had raised serum levels of IL-1B, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12, and TNF-α as compared to the healthy controls, whereas the total vitamin D levels were remarkably low as compared to health controls. Serum TSH, anti-TG, and anti-TPO levels were typically lower in controls and much higher in individuals with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. The current study's findings might aid in future studies and in the diagnosis and management of autoimmune thyroid disease.

Previous studies found that rutin can improve production performance of sheep and dairy cows. However, it is not clear whether rutin has similar effects in goats. Hence, the aim of this experiment was to study the effects of rutin supplementation on growth performance, slaughter performance, serum parameters, and meat quality of Nubian goats. A total of 36 healthy Nubian ewes were randomly divided into three groups. Goats were fed the basal diet supplemented with 0 (R0), 25 (R25), and 50 (R50) mg rutin per kg of diet. The growth performance and slaughter performance of goats had no significant difference among three groups. The meat pH45min and moisture were significantly higher in the R25 group than the R50 group (p < 0.05), but the color value b* and contents of C14:0, C16:0, C18:0, C18:1n9c, C20:1, saturated fatty acid (SFA), and monounsaturated fatty acid (MSFA) in meat had an opposite outcome. The dressing percentage had an increasing tendency in the R25 group compared with the R0 group (0.05 < p < 0.10), but the shear force, water loss rate and crude protein of meat had opposite results. In conclusion, rutin could not affect the growth performance and slaughter performance of goats; low levels could possibly improve meat quality.

BACKGROUND: Up to 30% of patients with acute pericarditis develop recurrent pericarditis. Acute pericarditis may be a manifestation of an underlying systemic autoimmune disease. Therefore, we evaluated the characteristics of patients with acute pericarditis according to antinuclear antibodies (ANA) positivity/negativity. METHODS: Participants with acute pericarditis and negative ANA (n=29), recurrent pericarditis with positive ANA (n=30) and healthy controls (n=11) were examined. The groups were compared using serum parameters (ANA, C-reactive protein, leucocyte count, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, total antioxidant status, nitric oxide (NO), and oxidative stress index (OSI)) and imaging techniques (electrocardiogram, echocardiography, cardiovascular magnetic resonance, and venous Doppler ultrasound). RESULTS: In females, acute pericarditis associated with ANA occurred more frequently (p<0.001). ANApositive acute pericarditis had significantly lower NO and OSI (p<0.05 and p<0.001, respectively) and pericardial inflammation on magnetic resonance. We found a pulmonary embolism in one patient with positive ANA. Slow venous flow (SVF) occurred more often in acute pericarditis associated with ANA than in the ANA-negative group on venous ultrasound (p<0.05). The prevalence of positive ANAs was 1.6 times higher among SVF patients than in controls. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that acute pericarditis associated with ANA is more common in middle- aged females. SVF and lower oxidative stress tests were more common in patients with ANAassociated acute pericarditis. Acute pericarditis associated with ANA could be considered as a hypercoagulable state. Therefore, all newly diagnosed pericarditis patients (especially females) should be checked for ANA positivity. Awareness of this coexistence should be promptly addressed to establish management strategies.

Sodium chloride (NaCl) is usually added to diets to meet the Na and Cl requirements of broilers in the Chinese poultry industry, but the optimal dietary NaCl supplemental level was not well-established. The present study was conducted to estimate the optimal dietary NaCl supplemental level of broilers fed a corn-soybean meal diet from 1 to 21 days of age. A total of 490, 1-day-old Arbor Acres male broilers were fed a NaCl-unsupplemented corn-soybean meal basal diet (control) and the basal diet supplemented with 0.10, 0.20, 0.30, 0.40, 0.50 or 0.60% NaCl for 21 days. Regression analysis was conducted to evaluate the optimal dietary NaCl level using the best fitted broken-line or asymptotic models. As dietary supplemental NaCl levels increased, average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI), blood partial pressure of CO2, total CO2, base excess and anion gap, blood concentrations of HCO3, Na and Cl, serum Na concentration, jejunal villus height (VH) and tibia ash content increased linearly and quadratically (P < 0.05), while feed/gain ratio, relative weights of heart, liver and kidney, blood K concentration, serum concentrations of K, uric acid and glucose, and osmotic pressure decreased linearly and quadratically (P < 0.05). The estimates of optimal dietary NaCl levels were 0.20-0.22% based on the best fitted broken-line or asymptotic models (P < 0.0001) of ADG, ADFI and feed/gain ratio, and 0.08-0.24% based on the best fitted broken-line or asymptotic models (P < 0.0001) of blood gas indices, serum parameters, jejunal VH, tibia ash content and organ indices. These results suggested that the optimal dietary NaCl supplemental level would be 0.24% for broilers fed the corn-soybean meal diet from 1 to 21 days of age, which is lower than the current dietary NaCl supplemental level (0.30%) in the Chinese broiler production.

The rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is one of the most commercially sought-after freshwater fish species and one of the most farmed in the world. On the other hand, aquaculture breeding frequently results in outbreaks of infectious diseases and pests, and compromises the production and welfare of fish. Arthrospira platensis (known as "Spirulina") has been used as a supplement in diets to enhance fish welfare in recent years because of its beneficial properties. This study aimed to assess the possible protective effects of Arthrospira platensis on rainbow trout specimens exposed to three different doses of the toxicant CdCl2. The experiment was carried out using five experimental treatments of 40 individuals each: control group; group II (0.2 mg CdCl2 per kg of commercial fish feed); group III (0.2 mg Kg-1 of CdCl2 plus 2.5 g per kg of A. platensis); group IV (0.2 mg Kg-1 of CdCl2 plus 5 g per kg of A. platensis); group V (0.2 mg Kg-1 of CdCl2 plus 10 g per kg of A. platensis). During the experiment, dietary supplementation of A. platensis normalized all serum and blood parameters altered by the presence of CdCl2. A. platensis also had a protective effect on markers of oxidative stress.

Gut microbiota (GM) plays a vital role in the nutrition and metabolism of weaned piglets. Some feed additives can be used to adjust the composition of GM to improve the health of weaned piglets. In this study, we investigated the effects of adding fermented bamboo shoot processing waste (FBSPW) to diet on growth performance, serum parameters, and GM of weaned piglets. Seventy-two piglets were divided into four groups and were fed diets containing 0% (control), 4% (group A), 8% (group B), and 12% (group C) FBSPW for 50 days. We found that the addition of FBSPW significantly decreased the average daily feed intake, serum triglyceride content, and urea nitrogen of weaned piglets compared to the control. The cecum and cecal microbiota of weaned piglets fed the basal diet with 12% FBSPW were significantly different compared to the control. A basal diet with 12% FBSPW significantly reduced the taxon feature number, and the relative abundance of Tenericutes in the cecum and cecal microbiota of weaned piglets compared with the control. The addition of 12% FBSPW to weaned piglet feed could improve their nitrogen and lipid metabolisms and have beneficial effects on GM.

The treatment of gallstones is a matter of real concern as they may cause gallbladder cancer if not properly attended to. Evaluating the classification of gallstones can give major clues in their treatment as it will decide their etiology, chemical composition, and pathogenesis. Also, serum parameters have emerged as an efficient tool for diagnosing gallstones. They can be probed to evaluate different biochemicals and the changes in their levels in gallstone patients which can be correlated with early prediction of the formation of gallstones. In the present review, a thorough search of the available literature was done starting from the earliest approaches for the classification of gallstones up to the recent advancements. The alteration in the level of serum parameters was also studied in gallstone patients so that it can act as a potential diagnostic tool for early detection of gallstone formation. The earliest classification of gallstones was done in 1896 by Naunyn. He classified them into pure cholesterol stones, laminated cholesterol stones, ordinary gallbladder stones, mixed bilirubin stones, and rare forms. The most recent classification of gallstones was done by Peter et al in 2020 and they classified them as pure, mixed, composite cholesterol, carbonate stones, black and brown pigment stones. The altered of levels of serum parameters was analyzed by Reuben (1985) and in recent times by Peter et al (2020). The various serum parameters studied were as RDW-CV test (red blood cell distribution width), PCT (prolactin) test, MPV (mean platelet count), LYM (lymphocyte) test, and EOS (eosinophil and eosinophil count test). Also, we discussed some practical considerations for gallstones that can be taken into account for gallstone prevention and diagnosis. Further research is required to detect gallstone type in the gallbladder by using the alteration in the levels of serum parameters.

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) are regarded as a standard of care in multiple malignancies. We hypothesized that serum parameters are of prognostic value in ICI treated patients suffering from solid tumours. METHODS: Data from 114 patients treated with ICIs for solid malignancies from 2015 to 2019 at the Medical University of Vienna were collected retrospectively. Data included baseline characteristics, cancer type, serum parameters such as lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), C-reactive protein (CRP), albumin (Alb) and lymphocyte counts as well as overall survival (OS) and progression free survival. Additionally, the Gustave Roussy Immune Score (GRIm score) and the Glasgow prognostic score (GPS) were calculated. Cox regression models including time-dependent effects and strata for tumour type were used. Prognostic factors were pre-selected using a relaxed LASSO approach. RESULTS: The majority of patients were male (64.9%). The most common cancer types were non-small cell lung cancer (30.7%) and renal cell carcinoma (21.9%). Increased LDH and CRP were associated with poor 6-month OS (Hazard ratios (HR)=1.16 and 1.06 per 20% LDH/CRP increase; 95% CI 1.07-1.26 and 95% CI 1.03-1.09, respectively; p < .001). Both GRIm Score and GPS had a significant influence on OS (GRIm: HR = 2.84, 95% CI 1.72-4.69; p < .001 for high vs. low; GPS HR 3.57, 95% CI 1.76-7.25; p < .001 for poor vs. good). The proportion of explained variation (PEV) of our full multivariable model was significantly higher compared to the GRIm and GPS (PEV = 29.5% vs. 14.8% and 14.65%). When grouped into quartiles according to the individual 8-weeks change, both increased LDH and CRP correlated with poor OS (LDH (p=.001) and CRP (p < .001)). CONCLUSION: The results of this analysis suggest that serum parameters might have prognostic value for the outcome of cancer patients treated with ICI, regardless of the tumour type.Key messagesIn this retrospective analysis, 114 patients with solid tumours were included. The results of this analysis point out that pre-treatment LDH, CRP and albumin levels are strongly prognostic for a poor 6-month OS.In addition to that, a high GRIm-score and poor GPS were associated with a worse OS (GRIm: HR = 2.84, 95% CI 1.72-4.69; p < .001 for high vs. low; GPS HR = 3.57, 95% CI 1.76-7.25; p < .001 for poor vs. good).Pre-treatment serum parameters might have prognostic value for the outcome of cancer patients treated with ICI, regardless of the tumour type.

Hybridization in bovines is practiced with the main aim of improving production performance, which may imply the microbial variations in the rumen from the parental breed cross to their progeny. Besides, the interactions of offspring breed with sex in terms of rumen bacteria are not clear. This study aims to evaluate the variations in rumen bacterial communities in different breeds and sexes, and the correlations among fattening performance, serum biochemical parameters, and rumen fermentation. Forty-two 19.2 ± 0.67-month-old beef cattle (390 ± 95 kg of initial body weight) comprising two genetic lines (Yiling and Angus × Yiling) and two sexes (heifers and steers) were raised under the same high-grain diet for 120 d. On the last two days, blood samples were collected from each animal via the jugular vein before morning feeding for analyzing serum biochemical parameters; rumen fluid samples were obtained via esophageal intubation 2 h after morning feeding for analyzing rumen fermentation parameters and bacterial communities. The results show that both breed and sex had a certain impact on fattening performance, serum biochemical parameters, and rumen fermentation. No differences in the diversity and structure of rumen bacterial communities were observed. Significant interactions (p < 0.05) of breed and sex were observed for Succinivibrionaceae UCG-002 and Prevotellaceae UCG-001. The relative abundances of the Rikenellaceae RC9 gut group, Prevotellaceae UCG-003, and Succinivibrio were different (p < 0.05) between breeds. Heifers had a higher (p = 0.008) relative abundance of the Rikenellaceae RC9 gut group than steers. Correlation analysis showed a significant relationship (p < 0.05) of rumen bacteria with serum biochemical parameters, rumen pH, and rumen fermentation patterns. Additionally, only two genera, Prevotellaceae UCG-003 and Prevotellaceae UCG-001, had positive correlations with feed efficiency. In conclusion, serum biochemical parameters, rumen fermentation, and rumen bacterial communities are partly driven by the breed and sex of cattle fed a high-grain diet.

Introduction: It is of great importance to seek agro-industrial byproducts that can serve as unconventional or alternative feedstuffs for poultry, especially those that are substitutive sources of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), as this will contribute to alleviating feed shortage pressure and improving poultry performance and product quality. In this study, the effects of dietary fermented peony seed dreg (FPSD) on the production performance of hens and fatty acid composition of meat and egg yolk were evaluated. Methods: A total of 480 54-week-old Xinyang chickens were divided into 5 groups: control (basal diet); 5% peony seed dreg (PSD); and 5%, 7% and 9% FPSD, and each group consisted of 6 replicates with 16 birds per replicate. Production performances were recorded daily, and egg quality, serum parameters, antibody titers and fatty acid profile in the muscle and yolk were measured at 64 weeks of age. Results and discussion: Egg production, feed conversion ratio and egg albumen quality were improved (p < 0.05) by 5% and 7% FPSD groups compared to 5% PSD and the control diet. Immune status was not influenced by PSD, but antibody titres against H7N9 and ND were improved by FPSD diets during most of the experimental periods. Dietary 5% and 7% FPSD increased (p < 0.05) serum high density lipoprotein concentrations and glutathione peroxidase actives. Total n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in meat and yolk increased gradually, while the total saturated fatty acids (SFA) and the n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio decreased gradually with increasing dietary FPSD levels. In conclusion, up to 7% dietary FPSD has the potential use to be utilized as a supplement in Xinyang laying hen diets to produce n-3 PUFA-enriched meat and eggs and positively affect production performance and health status.

In the present research, the effects of sublethal lead (Pb) concentrations on total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI) levels, enzyme activities (aspartate transaminase, AST; alanine transaminase, ALT; lactate dehydrogenase, LDH), ion levels (magnesium, Mg; sodium, Na; potassium, K; chlorine, Cl; calcium, Ca), and some metabolite levels (cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL, LDL, albumin, total protein) in the blood serum of Oreochromis niloticus and the protective function of nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) due to its chelating characteristic were investigated. O. niloticus, which has an important position in the food chain and is often preferred in toxicological studies, was exposed to 0.1 ppm Pb, 0.1 ppm Pb + 0.3 ppm NTA, 1 ppm Pb, and 1 ppm Pb + 3 ppm NTA concentrations for 7 and 21 days. At the end of the duration, serum TAS and TOS levels were measured spectrophotometrically with Rel Assay Diagnostics; other enzyme activities, ion levels, and metabolite parameters were done by an autoanalyzer using commercial kits. Depending on the exposure periods and concentrations, the changes in the parameters were determined. It is determined that, under the influence of high ambient concentration of lead, TOS, OSI, AST, ALT, LDH, LDL, triglyceride, and Mg levels increased, while TAS, albumin, and K levels decreased after 21 days. These increases/decreases in all serum biochemical parameters were generally higher in fish treated with Pb alone compared to fish treated with a mixture of Pb + NTA. This study shows that these changes in serum parameters could be used as an indicator to assess on metal toxicity.

BACKGROUND: With the development of intensive farming, long-term exposure of pigs to poor light conditions is not conducive to the production of vitamin D3 , and vitamin D3 deficiency could affect absorption and metabolism of calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P). 25-Hydroxyvitamin D3 (25OHD3 ) has higher bioactivity than regular vitamin D3 . This study investigated the effects of 25OHD3 on performance, serum parameters, fecal microbiota, and metabolites in weaned piglets fed with low Ca-P diet. RESULTS: It was found that a low Ca-P diet supplemented with 50 µg/kg 25OHD3 (NC + 25-D) improved (P < 0.05) average daily gain (ADG) in phase 2 and in the overall period of the experiment, and increased (P < 0.05) the immunoglobulin G (IgG), immunoglobulin A (IgA), catalase (CAT), bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP), and osteocalcin (OC) serum content on day 28 compared with a low Ca-P diet (NC), but no differences were observed between a normal Ca-P diet (PC) and the NC + 25-D diet. Compared with NC, the abundance of Firmicutes was higher (P < 0.05) in PC and NC + 25-D. NC + 25-D decreased (P < 0.05) the abundance of Streptococcaceae compared with PC and NC, and increased (P < 0.05) the abundance of Lachnospiraceae compared with NC. Serum 25OHD3 was negatively correlated with the abundance of fecal Streptococcaceae (P < 0.05), and positively correlated with the abundance of fecal Lachnospiraceae (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Supplementation of 25OHD3 in a low Ca-P diet improved serum immunity, bone biochemical parameters, and fecal microbiota such as decreased Streptococcaceae abundance and increased Lachnospiraceae abundance, which could subsequently promote growth of piglets. The effects were similar to that of a normal Ca-P diet. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.
