Sirtuins (SRTs) are nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) dependent II histone deacetylases (HDACs) that have been understudied in horticultural crops. However, their functions in regulating mitochondrial energy metabolism and influencing fruit development and quality formation remain unclear. In this study, we found that FaSRT2-1 exhibits diverse subcellular localizations. Overexpression of FaSRT2-1 promoted strawberry fruit quality formation (soluble sugars, organic acids, anthocyanins) and accelerated ripening. Conversely, knockout of FaSRT2-1 yielded opposite results. During fruit ripening, ATP content and ATP/ADP ratio gradually increased, and FaSRT2-1 promoted ATP accumulation and decreased before and after the deep red stage, respectively, indicating its role in fruit ripening and senescence. FaSRT2-1 interacted with energy-related proteins (FaRPT4a, FaATPß and FaATPγ) to increase ATP content and the ATP/ADP ratio. Additionally, FaSRT2-1 collaborated with FaGDH2 and FaWDR5B to increase the accumulation of soluble sugars, organic acids and anthocyanins. Meanwhile, FaRPT4a, FaATPγ, FaGDH2 and FaWDR5B were co-localized with FaSRT2-1, while FaATPß was localized in both the cytoplasm and mitochondria. Transient overexpression experiments further highlight the roles of FaRPT4a and FaGDH2/FaWDR5B in modulating ATP accumulation and fruit ripening, respectively. In summary, FaSRT2-1 plays important roles in promoting strawberry fruit ripening, senescence and quality formation by regulating energy metabolism.

Strawberry wine production is a considerable approach to solve the problem of the Chinese concentrated harvesting period and the short shelf life of strawberries, but the appropriative strawberry cultivars for fermentation are still undecided. In this study, the strawberry juice and wines of four typical strawberry cultivars named Akihime (ZJ), Sweet Charlie (TCL), Snow White (BX), and Tongzhougongzhu (TZ) were thoroughly characterized for their physicochemical indicators, bioactive compounds, and volatile organic components (VOCs) to determine the optimal strawberry cultivars for winemaking. The results showed that there were significant differences in the total sugar content, pH, total acid, and other physicochemical indexes in the strawberry juice of different cultivars, which further affected the physicochemical indexes of fermented strawberry wine. Moreover, the content of polyphenols, total flavonoids, vitamin C, and color varied among the four strawberry cultivars. A total of 42 VOCs were detected in the strawberry juice and wines using headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS), and 3-methyl-1-butanol, linalool, trans-2-pinanol, hexanoic acid, and hexanoic acid ethyl ester were the differential VOCs to identify the strawberry wine samples of different cultivars. Overall, strawberry cultivar ZJ had a relatively high VOC and bioactive compound content, indicating that it is the most suitable cultivar for strawberry wine fermentation. In addition to determining the relatively superior fermentation characteristics of cultivar ZJ, the results may provide a theoretical basis for the raw material quality control and quality improvement of strawberry wine.

Strawberries are susceptible to various diseases during their growth, and leaves may show signs of diseases as a response. Given that these diseases generate yield loss and compromise the quality of strawberries, timely detection is imperative. To automatically identify diseases in strawberry leaves, a KTD-YOLOv8 model is introduced to enhance both accuracy and speed. The KernelWarehouse convolution is employed to replace the traditional component in the backbone of the YOLOv8 to reduce the computational complexity. In addition, the Triplet Attention mechanism is added to fully extract and fuse multi-scale features. Furthermore, a parameter-sharing diverse branch block (DBB) sharing head is constructed to improve the model's target processing ability at different spatial scales and increase its accuracy without adding too much calculation. The experimental results show that, compared with the original YOLOv8, the proposed KTD-YOLOv8 increases the average accuracy by 2.8% and reduces the floating-point calculation by 38.5%. It provides a new option to guide the intelligent plant monitoring system and precision pesticide spraying system during the growth of strawberry plants.

The garden strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) is cultivated and consumed worldwide because of the pleasant flavor and health-promoting phytochemicals of its false fruits. Monocrop cultivars produce fully ripe strawberries in about one month post-anthesis throughout the spring, while everbearing cultivars undergo additional strawberry production in autumn. In this work, we evaluated the impact of different season-dependent environmental conditions on the ripening program of an everbearing field-gown strawberry variety from autumn 2015 to spring 2016. We combined ad hoc sampling and environmental data collection with LC-MS-based untargeted metabolomics to dissect the effects of cumulative temperature and solar irradiation on fruit quality parameters and secondary metabolism during ripening. Different dynamics in specific sub-groups of metabolites were observed in strawberries experiencing distinct amounts of cumulative temperature and solar irradiation during spring and autumn. The integration of statistical analyses on collected data revealed that solar irradiation mainly affected fruit fresh weight and organic acid levels, whereas temperature had a more selective effect on the accumulation of specific flavonols, anthocyanins, and soluble sugar. These findings are of suitable interest to design further approaches for the study of the complex interactions among environmental conditions and ripening in strawberries grown in a real-world scenario.

Dihydroflavonol 4-reductase (DFR) significantly influences the modification of flower color. To explore the role of DFR in the synthesis of strawberry anthocyanins, in this study, we downloaded the CDS sequences of the DFR gene family from the Arabidopsis genome database TAIR; the DFR family of forest strawberry was compared; then, a functional domain screen was performed using NCBI; the selected strawberry DFR genes were analyzed; and the expression characteristics of the family members were studied by qRT-PCR. The results showed that there are 57 members of the DFR gene family in strawberry, which are mainly expressed in the cytoplasm and chloroplast; most of them are hydrophilic proteins; and the secondary structure of the protein is mainly composed of α-helices and random coils. The analysis revealed that FvDFR genes mostly contain light, hormone, abiotic stress, and meristem response elements. From the results of the qRT-PCR analysis, the relative expression of each member of the FvDFR gene was significantly different, which was expressed throughout the process of fruit coloring. Most genes had the highest expression levels in the full coloring stage (S4). The expression of FvDFR30, FvDFR54, and FvDFR56 during the S4 period was 8, 2.4, and 2.4 times higher than during the S1 period, indicating that the DFR gene plays a key role in regulating the fruit coloration of strawberry. In the strawberry genome, 57 members of the strawberry DFR gene family were identified. The higher the DFR gene expression, the higher the anthocyanin content, and the DFR gene may be the key gene in anthocyanin synthesis. Collectively, the DFR gene is closely related to fruit coloring, which lays a foundation for further exploring the function of the DFR gene family.

Microalgae like Chlamydomonas are beneficial organisms employed as biological stimulants to improve plants' growth, fruit quality, and stress tolerance. In the current study, the effects of Chlamydomonas sp. foliar spraying (0, 20, and 40 ml L-1) were assayed on Camarosa strawberry plants under salinity stress (0, 40, and 80 mM NaCl). The results showed that the foliar application of Chlamydomonas extract influenced strawberry's morphological, physiological, and biochemical characteristics under salinity stress. Foliar treatment of Chlamydomonas extract with and without salinity stress increased the leaf number and leaf area, the leaf relative water content, and photosynthetic pigments content. Moreover, the foliar application of Chlamydomonas extract decreased lipid peroxidation and hydrogen peroxide content and, on the other hand, enhanced the antioxidant enzymes activity (superoxide dismutase, guaiacol peroxidase, and peroxidase), phenolics, flavonoids, and anthocyanins content under salinity stress. For instance, the highest total antioxidant capacity was found in the plants foliar treated with 40 ml L-1 of Chlamydomonas algae extract under 80 mM salinity stress, which increased by 102.4% compared to the controls, as well as the highest total phenolic compounds and anthocyanin's content were 30.22, and 7.2% more than the control plants, respectively. Overall, the foliar application of Chlamydomonas algae extracts, especially at a concentration of 20 ml L-1 enhanced the strawberry's growth, yield, and physiological traits under saline conditions. The results with more detailed evaluations will be advisable for the pioneer farmers and extension section.

Plants may encounter abiotic stresses, such as drought, flooding, salinity, and extreme temperatures, thereby negatively affecting their growth, development, and reproduction. In order to enhance their tolerance to such stresses, plants have developed intricate signaling networks that regulate stress-responsive gene expression. For example, Arabidopsis Enhanced Drought Tolerance1/HOMEODOMAIN GLABROUS 11 (AtEDT1/HDG11), one of the transcription factor genes from the group IV of homeodomain-leucine zipper (HD-ZIP) gene family, has been shown to increase drought tolerance in various transgenic plants. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of enhanced stress tolerance remain unclear. In this study, we identified a homologous gene related to AtEDT1/HDG11, named FaTEDT1L, from the transcriptome sequencing database of cultivated strawberry. Phylogenetic analysis revealed the close relationship of FaTEDT1L with AtEDT1/HDG11, which is one of the group IV members of the HD-ZIP gene family. Yeast one-hybrid analysis showed that FaTEDT1L functions as a transcriptional activator. Transgenic Arabidopsis plants overexpressing FaTEDT1L under the control of the cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S promoter exhibited significantly enhanced tolerance to osmotic stress (both drought and salinity) when compared to the wild-type (WT) plants. Under osmotic stress, the average root length was 3.63 ± 0.83 cm, 4.20 ± 1.03 cm, and 4.60 ± 1.14 cm for WT, 35S::FaTEDT1L T2 #3, and 35S:: FaTEDT1L T2 #5, respectively. Substantially increased root length in 35S::FaTEDT1L T2 #3 and 35S::FaTEDT1L T2 #5 was noted when compared to the WT. In addition, the average water loss rates were 64%, 57.1%, and 55.6% for WT, 35S::FaTEDT1L T2 #3, and 35S::FaTEDT1L T2 #5, respectively, after drought treatment, indicating a significant decrease in water loss rate of 35S:: FaTEDT1L T2 #3 and 35S::FaTEDT1L T2 #5 is a critical factor in enhancing plant drought resistance. These findings thus highlight the crucial role of FaTEDT1L in mitigating drought and salt stresses and regulating plant osmotic stress tolerance. Altogether, FaTEDT1L shows its potential usage as a candidate gene for strawberry breeding in improving crop resilience and increasing agricultural productivity under adverse environmental conditions.

This study investigated the potential use of curcumin-mediated photodynamic treatment as a postharvest decontamination technique to reduce microbial load and growth and therefore extend the shelf life of strawberries. Curcumin was applied on strawberries, followed by illumination and storage at 4°C for 16 days. Strawberries were evaluated for decay, microbial load, and physicochemical properties such as weight loss, color, and firmness during storage. The findings revealed that curcumin-mediated photodynamic treatment effectively reduced the decay incidence and severity in strawberries, with 20% less decay occurrence compared to untreated fruits, which was shown to be dependent on curcumin concentration. While a complete reduction in microbial load was observed upon treatment, microbial growth remained unaffected throughout storage. Moreover, photodynamic treatment did not show any adverse impact on color properties and firmness of strawberries. This eco-friendly technique presents potential for fruit's shelf-life extension, although optimization of treatment parameters and photodynamic unit design seems to be essential.

The potential of L-glutathione (GSH) (0, 4, 16, 32 and 64 mM) to improve the post-harvest quality and antioxidant capacity of strawberries was investigated during storage (0, 5, 10, and 15 days) in this study. Results showed that weight loss in fruits treated with 64 mM GSH was significantly lower than the control. GSH treatments resulted in higher levels of total phenol content and antioxidant capacity in treated fruits of strawberry. Based on the results, GSH 64 mM significantly increased the levels of total flavonoid, anthocyanin, ascorbic acid, total soluble protein, antioxidant enzymes such as catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), guaiacol peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and Phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL). In addition, GSH 64 mM decreased Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and prevented cell membrane lipid peroxidation. In conclusion, the results of the present study showed that the use of GSH 64 mM may be a promising strategy to improve the marketability, quality and antioxidant capacity of strawberry fruits during storage.

Lygus lineolaris (Palisot de Beauvois) (Hemiptera: Miridae), a true omnivorous insect, poses a significant threat to agriculture in the Neartic region. Understanding the feeding behavior of L. lineolaris is crucial for developing integrated pest management strategies. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of different diets on the fitness of L. lineolaris, with a focus on the diet source, feeding regime (phytophagy, zoophagy, and phytozoophagy), and number of diet items. The experimental design in the laboratory investigated the impacts of strawberry, canola and buckwheat flowers, as well as spider mites and aphids to explore relationships found in a conventional strawberry field. Results reveal that diet source, feeding regime, and the number of diet items influence L. lineolaris performance (i.e., survivorship rate, developmental time, and adult weight and length). Improvements in fitness are indicated by higher nymphal survival, shorter developmental time, and larger adults. Immature stages of L. lineolaris show improved fitness when provided with diets rich in canola compared to strawberry flowers and spider mites. Furthermore, the inclusion of multiple diet items in phytozoophagous regimes enhances insect performance. The findings emphasize the significance of understanding L. lineolaris' nutritional requirements and the biodiversity of target ecosystems for modeling energy flows and designing effective IPM strategies against this pest. This research contributes to the knowledge base for biological control programs targeting L. lineolaris in agricultural systems.

Strawberry cultivation requires strategies that maintain or improve its yield within a scheme in which reducing fertilizers and other chemical products can make its consumption safer and more environmentally friendly. This study aims to evaluate the effect of Bacillus subtilis and Rhizophagus intraradices on strawberry growth, yield, and fruit quality. B. subtilis and R. intraradices were inoculated and co-inoculated under three fertilization levels of 225-100-250, 112-50-125, and 0-0-0 kg∙ha-1 of N, P2O5 and K2O. Vegetative growth was evaluated in plant height (cm), leaf area (cm2), aerial fresh weight (g), aerial dry weight (g), and plant coverage (%) variables. Fruit quality parameters such as total acidity (g∙100 mL-1), soluble solids (Brix°), and firmness (kg) were also determined, as well as the number of fruits per m2 and yield (t∙ha-1). The results showed that the pre-treatment of root immersion in a nutrient solution with B. subtilis and the fractionation of 6 L B. subtilis inoculation per plant at a concentration of 107 CFU∙mL-1, in combination with 225-100-250 kg∙ha-1 of N, P2O5, and K2O, achieved the highest accumulation of dry matter (12.9 ± 1.9 g∙plant-1), the highest number of fruits (28.2 ± 4.5 fruits∙m-2), and the highest yield (7.2 ± 1.4 t∙ha-1). In addition, this treatment increased the soluble sugar content by 34.78% and fruit firmness by 26.54% compared to the control without inoculation. This study highlights the synergistic effect of mineral nutrition and microbial inoculation with B. subtilis in increasing strawberry yield and fruit quality.

BACKGROUND: The plant hormone auxin plays a crucial role in regulating important functions in strawberry fruit development. Although a few studies have described the complex auxin biosynthetic and signaling pathway in wild diploid strawberry (Fragaria vesca), the molecular mechanisms underlying auxin biosynthesis and crosstalk in octoploid strawberry fruit development are not fully characterized. To address this knowledge gap, comprehensive transcriptomic analyses were conducted at different stages of fruit development and compared between the achene and receptacle to identify developmentally regulated auxin biosynthetic genes and transcription factors during the fruit ripening process. Similar to wild diploid strawberry, octoploid strawberry accumulates high levels of auxin in achene compared to receptacle. RESULTS: Genes involved in auxin biosynthesis and conjugation, such as Tryptophan Aminotransferase of Arabidopsis (TAAs), YUCCA (YUCs), and Gretchen Hagen 3 (GH3s), were found to be primarily expressed in the achene, with low expression in the receptacle. Interestingly, several genes involved in auxin transport and signaling like Pin-Formed (PINs), Auxin/Indole-3-Acetic Acid Proteins (Aux/IAAs), Transport Inhibitor Response 1 / Auxin-Signaling F-Box (TIR/AFBs) and Auxin Response Factor (ARFs) were more abundantly expressed in the receptacle. Moreover, by examining DEGs and their transcriptional profiles across all six developmental stages, we identified key auxin-related genes co-clustered with transcription factors from the NAM-ATAF1,2-CUC2/ WRKYGQK motif (NAC/WYKY), Heat Shock Transcription Factor and Heat Shock Proteins (HSF/HSP), APETALA2/Ethylene Responsive Factor (AP2/ERF) and MYB transcription factor groups. CONCLUSIONS: These results elucidate the complex regulatory network of auxin biosynthesis and its intricate crosstalk within the achene and receptacle, enriching our understanding of fruit development in octoploid strawberries.

Strawberries provide a number of potential health promoting phytonutrients to include phenolics, polyphenols, fiber, micronutrients and vitamins. The objective of this review is to provide a comprehensive summary of recent human studies pertaining to the intake of strawberry and strawberry phytonutrients on human health. A literature search conducted through PubMed and Cochrane databases consolidated studies focusing on the effects of strawberry intake on human health. Articles were reviewed considering pre-determined inclusion and exclusion criteria, including experimental or observational studies that focused on health outcomes, and utilized whole strawberries or freeze-dried strawberry powder (FDSP), published between 2000-2023. Of the 60 articles included in this review, 47 were clinical trials, while 13 were observational studies. A majority of these studies reported on the influence of strawberry intake on cardiometabolic outcomes. Study designs included those examining the influence of strawberry intake during the postprandial period, short-term trials randomized with a control, or a single arm intake period controlling with a low polyphenolic diet or no strawberry intake. A smaller proportion of studies included in this review examined the influence of strawberry intake on additional outcomes of aging including bone and brain health, and cancer risk. Data support that the inclusion of strawberries into the diet can have positive impacts during the postprandial period, with daily intake improving outcomes of lipid metabolism and inflammation in those at increased cardiovascular risk.

New bioactive coatings with eryngo essential oil (EEO) nanoemulsions stabilized by ultrasonically-treated lesser mealworm protein isolate (LMPI) were developed to extend strawberry shelf life and quality. EEO due to high carvone (43.03 %), phenolics (87.45 mg gallic acid equivalent/g), flavonoids (13.56 mg quercetin equivalent/g), and carotenoids (635.07 mg/kg) contents exhibited a significant antioxidant activity comparable to ascorbic acid (AA) and BHT. Nanoemulsions stabilized with 9 % sonicated LMPI showed smaller droplet size, higher negative ζ-potential, and greater stability, turbidity, and encapsulation efficiency of EEO compared to those stabilized with native LMPI. The FTIR spectra showed that sonicated LMPI had structural changes enhancing its emulsifying activity, with key peaks indicating the presence of hydrogen bonds, carbonyl groups, and protein conformations in both EEO and LMPI. Strawberries coated with optimal EEO-loaded nanoemulsions showed superior quality with minimal storage-dependent physicochemical, textural, color, and sensory changes compared to control samples. This edible coating also maintained higher total monomeric anthocyanin and AA contents with lower peroxidase activity during storage than EEO-based coatings. However, no significant difference in superoxide dismutase activity between samples covered by EEO and EEO-loaded nanoemulsions over 14 days of storage was found. Bioactive nanoemulsions stabilized by insect proteins would be an eco-friendly and safe approach to upholding quality standards in stored fruits and vegetables.

Boron (B), an essential micronutrient for fruit development, also plays a crucial role in maintaining the shelf life of strawberries (Fragaria ananassa Duch.) by affecting cell wall structure and components. We investigated the distribution pattern of B within cells and cell walls in strawberry fruits under different B levels and revealed the relationship between the B distribution in cell walls and fruit firmness after harvesting. Foliar spraying of 0.1% H3BO3 promoted the growth of strawberry seedlings and improved fruit yield and flesh firmness by 45.7% and 25.6%. During the fruit softening and decay process, the content of bound B and cell wall-B decreased while more B was allocated to the protoplast and apoplast. The changes in B distribution in cells were attributed to cell damage during fruit decay, and B extended the freshness period of the fruits by alleviating the decrease of B distribution in cell walls. After leaving the fruits at room temperature for 10 h, the B content in different cell wall components significantly decreased, while foliar spraying of B alleviated the reduction of B content in covalently bound pectin (CBP), cellulose, and hemicellulose. Meanwhile, B spraying on fruit decreased the activity of cell wall degradation enzymes, including polygalacturonase (PG) and pectin lyase (PL), by 20.2% and 38.1%, while enhancing the demethylation of pectin by increasing pectin methylesterase (PME) activity from 21.6 U/g to 25.7 U/g. Thus, foliar spraying of 0.1% H3BO3 enhances the cross-linking of B with cell wall components and maintains cell wall structure, thereby prolonging the shelf life of strawberry fruits.

An effective method for maintaining the activity and longevity of microorganisms in adverse conditions is microencapsulation. In the present study, synthetic alginate pellets were developed as carriers for the biocontrol agent Trichoderma asperellum. In two field experiments, solarization was applied for three weeks to loamy clay soil that was naturally infested with strawberry-black root rot fungi (Fusarium solani, Rhizoctonia solani and Machrophomina phaseolina). Following solarization, T. asperellum-based alginate pellets or spore suspension were added to the soil. Data reveal that, three weeks solarization of irrigated soil increased its maximum temperature reached by 11-14.2 °C (1-10 cm depth), 11.6-13.1 °C (11-20 cm depth) and 10.1-12.2 °C (21-30 cm depth). In either trial, solarization also successfully lowers the vitality of strawberry-black root rot fungi directly after the solarization phase. When compared to controls, strawberry-black root rot was substantially less common in solarized plots. In two field trials, soil solarization followed by inoculation with alginate pellets based on T. asperellum led to the greatest reductions in black root rot incidence (59.3 and 74.1 %) and severity (72.5 and 75.2 %), as compared to un-solarized control plots. In vivo studies, this treatment dramatically increased the activity of defensive enzymes (peroxidase and chitinase) and strawberry yield (60.5 and 60.0 %, respectively), as compared to non-solarized control plots. In two field studies, the rhizosphere population of native Trichoderma spp. Developed more in solarized soils after the application of alginate pellets based on T. asperellum (86.5 and 83.6 %, respectively), compared to the non-solarized control.

Fruit color substantially affects consumer preferences, with darker red strawberries being economically more valuable due to their higher anthocyanin content. However, the molecular basis for the dark red coloration remains unclear. Through screening of an ethyl methanesulfonate mutant library, we identified a rg418 mutant, that demonstrated anthocyanin accumulation during early fruit development stages. Furthermore, the ripening fruits of this mutant had higher anthocyanin content than wild-type (WT) fruits. An analysis of flavonoid content in WT and rg418 mutant fruits revealed substantial changes in metabolic fluxes, with the mutant exhibiting increased levels of anthocyanins and flavonols and decreased levels of proanthocyanidins. Bulked sergeant analysis sequencing indicated that the mutant gene was anthocyanidin reductase (ANR), a key gene in the proanthocyanidin synthesis pathway. Furthermore, transcriptome sequencing revealed the increased expression of MYB105 during the early development stage of mutant fruits, which promoted the expression of UFGT (UDP-glucose flavonoid 3-O-glucosyltransferase), a key gene involved in anthocyanin synthesis, thus substantially enhancing the anthocyanin content in the mutant fruits. Additionally, mutating ANR in a white-fruited strawberry variant (myb10 mutant) resulted in appealing pink-colored fruits, suggesting the diverse roles of ANR in fruit color regulation. Our study provides valuable theoretical insights for improving strawberry fruit color.

In recent years, the widespread application of growth regulators and nutrients to boost yield and quality of strawberry fruits has led to the rapid growth of strawberry industry globally. Although the effects of major nutrients on strawberry yield have been widely studied, investigations into the effect of trace elements such as boron remain limited. This study examined the effect of boron application on the yield and quality of "Benihoppe" strawberry fruits. Nutrient solutions with varying boron concentrations (0, 0.024, 0.048, 0.072, and 0.096 mM) were applied to the plants, and their effect on fruit quality was evaluated. The results indicated that boron application enhanced the yield per plant, nutrient composition (total amino acid and vitamin C content), antioxidant properties (total phenol) and volatile components (esters) in strawberry fruits. Specifically, treatment with 0.048 mM boron concentration significantly increased the accumulation of soluble sugars, such as sucrose, whose concentration was 154.29% higher than that of the control treated with 0 mM concentration. This enhancement is attributable to the regulated expression of sucrose phosphate synthase (maker-Fvb2-2-augustus-gene-229.38) and ß-fructofuranosidase-1/2/3 (augustus-masked-Fvb5-4-processed-gene-2.0, maker-Fvb5-3-augustus-gene-272.30, and maker-Fvb5-1-augustus-gene-0.37) genes, which play crucial roles in sugar metabolism and enzyme activity. Overall, boron application enhanced the quality of "Benihoppe" strawberries. The findings of this study offer substantial theoretical and practical guidance for using boron fertilizers in strawberry farming.

In this study, an antimicrobial component, silk protease inhibitors (SPIs), was extracted from discarded silkworm cocoons, and a suitable degumming method for obtaining regenerated silk fibroin (SF) was screened. An edible antimicrobial coating was prepared by mixing SPIs with SF for evaluation of potential in strawberries preservation. Results demonstrated that SPI could effectively inhibit mycelial growth and spore germination. The alkaline protease method exhibited the highest degumming rate of 24.4 %. The SPI-SF coating exhibited excellent mechanical properties, high water vapor permeability, and easy washability. Within 10 days, seedlings treatment with SPI-SF coating solution showed a germination rate of 94.3 %, and exhibited good biocompatibility with HepG2 cells. Coating with SPI-SF led to increase in the storage period of strawberries to 10-14 days, concurrent with considerable reduction in decay rate at room temperature. Conclusively, this study demonstrates the potential of SPI-SF edible coating in strawberries preservation.
