BACKGROUND: Hematoma expansion is a critical factor associated with increased mortality and adverse outcomes in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). Identifying and preventing hematoma expansion early on is crucial for effective therapeutic intervention. This study aimed to investigate the potential association between the Red cell distribution width to lymphocyte ratio (RDWLR) and hematoma expansion in ICH patients. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of clinical data from 303 ICH patients treated at our department between May 2018 and May 2023. Demographic, clinical, radiological, and laboratory data, including RDWLR upon admission, were assessed. Binary logistic regression analysis was employed to determine independent associations between various variables and hematoma expansion. RESULTS: The study included 303 ICH patients, comprising 167 (55.1%) males and 136 (44.9%) females, with a mean age of 65.25 ± 7.32 years at admission. Hematoma expansion occurred in 73 (24.1%) cases. Multivariate analysis revealed correlations between hematoma volume at baseline (OR, 2.73; 95% CI: 1.45 -4,78; P < 0.001), admission systolic blood pressure (OR, 2.98 ; 95% CI: 1.54-4.98; P < 0.001), Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) (OR, 1.58; 95% CI: 1.25-2.46; P = 0.017), and RDWLR (OR, 1.58; 95% CI: 1.13-2.85; P = 0.022) and hematoma expansion in these patients. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that RDWLR could serve as a new inflammatory biomarker for hematoma expansion in ICH patients. This cost-effective and readily available biomarker has the potential for early prediction of hematoma expansion in these patients.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between red cell distribution width (RDW) and the RDW to platelet count ratio (RPR) and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and to further investigate whether the association involves population differences and dose-response relationships. DESIGN: Cross-sectional population-based study. SETTING: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (1999-2020). PARTICIPANTS: A total of 48 283 participants aged 20 years or older (CVD, n=4593; non-CVD, n=43 690) were included in this study. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome was the presence of CVD, while the secondary outcome was the presence of specific CVDs. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the relationship between RDW or the RPR and CVD. Subgroup analyses were performed to test the interactions between demographics variables and their associations with disease prevalence. RESULTS: A logistic regression model was fully adjusted for potential confounders; the ORs with 95% CIs for CVD across the second to fourth quartiles were 1.03 (0.91 to 1.18), 1.19 (1.04 to 1.37) and 1.49 (1.29 to 1.72) for RDW (p for trend <0.0001) compared with the lowest quartile. The ORs with 95% CIs for CVD across the second to fourth quartiles were 1.04 (0.92 to 1.17), 1.22 (1.05 to 1.42) and 1.64 (1.43 to 1.87) for the RPR compared with the lowest quartile (p for trend <0.0001). The association of RDW with CVD prevalence was more pronounced in females and smokers (all p for interaction <0.05). The association of the RPR with CVD prevalence was more pronounced in the group younger than 60 years (p for interaction=0.022). The restricted cubic spline also suggested a linear association between RDW and CVD and a non-linear association between the RPR and CVD (p for non-linear <0.05). CONCLUSION: There are statistical heterogeneities in the association between RWD, RPR distributions and the CVD prevalence, across sex, smoking status and age groups.

BACKGROUND: Anemia is a common consequence of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Red cell distribution width (RDW) and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) are principally used for differential diagnosis of anemia. Limited evidence is available for its prognostic value for mortality in hemodialysis (HD) patients. We aimed to definite the relationship between RDW and MCV and mortality in HD patients. METHOD: This cohort study examined all-cause and cardiovascular (CV) mortality with 181 maintenance HD patients from February 2015. Patients were divided into four groups according to the median of RDW and MCV. Pearson analysis was conducted to determine the related factors of RDW and MCV. The independent association of RDW and MCV with mortality was examined with Kaplan-Meier curve and Cox regression analysis. RESULTS: This study included 181 HD patients for a median follow-up of 71 months. We found RDW was positively related to neutrophil count, C-reaction protein, and ferritin, while negatively related to hemoglobin, albumin, and creatinine. Only neutrophil count and ferritin were significantly related to MCV in this study. In the multivariate Cox regression analysis, the high RDW group was associated with higher risk of all-cause mortality (odds ratio, 3.787; 95% confidence interval, 1.037 to 13.834; p = 0.044). The relationship between RDW and MCV and CV mortality was not significant. CONCLUSIONS: RDW could emerge as an additive risk factor for all-cause mortality in maintenance HD patients, independent of other factors. An absolute value of MCV to predict mortality and the underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms should be confirmed in the future.

BACKGROUND: Elevated red cell distribution width (RDW) has been associated with degenerative conditions in aging. AIMS: We aimed to evaluate the associations of RDW and anemia with lower-extremity physical function among rural-dwelling older adults. METHODS: This population-based cross-sectional study included 5093 rural residents (age ≥ 60 years, 57.3% women) who participated in the MIND-China Study in Shandong. Data were collected via face-to-face interviews, clinical examinations, and laboratory tests. RDW was categorized according to quartiles and the lower-extremity physical function was assessed using the Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), RESULTS: Multiple linear regression analyses suggested that the fourth quartile of RDW (vs. first quartile) was associated with lower SPPB summary score (ß-coefficient - 0.38; 95% CI - 0.58 to - 0.18) and lower scores in balance test (- 0.09; - 0.17 to - 0.01), chair stand test (- 0.17; - 0.27 to - 0.07), and walking speed test (- 0.12; - 0.19 to - 0.05). Anemia was associated with a multiple-adjusted ß-coefficient of - 0.34 (- 0.52 to - 0.16) for SPPB summary score. Stratified analysis by anemia showed that there was a linear association between RDW and SPPB in individuals without anemia but a J-shaped association in individuals with anemia. DISCUSSION: This large-scale population-based study revealed the associations of high RDW and anemia with poor lower-extremity physical function among rural-dwelling Chinese older adults. These findings suggest that an elevated RDW might be a biochemical marker for poor lower-extremity physical function among older adults. CONCLUSIONS: Anemia and an elevated RDW are associated with poor performance in lower-extremity physical function among rural-dwelling Chinese older adults.

To investigate the relationship between red blood cell distribution width (RDW) and residual renal function (RRF) in patients undergoing continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). Seventy-seven CAPD patients were enrolled in this study. According to receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, patients were divided into high RDW (RDW > 14.95%) and low RDW (RDW ≤ 14.95%) groups. The data of baseline clinical, biochemical parameters, comorbidities, medication status, peritoneal function, and dialysis adequacy were compared. Survival curves were calculated using Kaplan-Meier method. Cox regression model was employed to analyze risk factors of decline in RRF. The overall median survival time was 24 months, the median survival time of high RDW group (46 patients) and low RDW group (31 patients) were 24 and 12 months, respectively. Compared with the low RDW group, patients in the high RDW group were older, higher rate of decline RRF and white blood cells count as well as lower total Kt/V (all p < 0.05). Kaplan-Meier survival curves showed that the low RDW group had higher survival of RRF compared with the high RDW group (p < 0.001). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that high RDW was independent risk factor for decline of RRF(hazard ratio = 1.441, 95% confidence interval: 1.089-1.905, p = 0.01). Increased baseline RDW is associated with decline of RRF in CAPD patients and RDW can be stratified as a valuable indicator for the risk of RRF decline.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether red cell distribution width (RDW) can predict illness severity and mortality risk in a heterogenous population of dogs admitted to the ICU. DESIGN: Prospective observational study. SETTING: Large, urban, private teaching hospital. ANIMALS: One hundred eleven dogs consecutively admitted to the ICU between September 2017 and December 2018. INTERVENTIONS: None. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Abbreviated Acute Patient Physiologic and Laboratory Evaluation (APPLEfast ) score and RDW were measured within 6 h of ICU admission. This study did not demonstrate a significant difference in illness severity across patients stratified by RDW. There was no difference in RDW between survivors and nonsurvivors at hospital discharge or at 30 days. CONCLUSIONS: In this study population, RDW did not correspond with illness severity as measured by APPLEfast . Moreover, RDW did not predict in-hospital or 30-day mortality.

BACKGROUND: Platelet distribution width (PDW) and red cell distribution width (RDW) are readily obtainable data, and are reportedly useful as prognostic indicators in some cancers. However, their prognostic significance is unclear in gastric cancer (GC). METHODS: We enrolled 445 patients with histopathological diagnoses of gastric adenocarcinoma who had undergone curative surgeries. RESULTS: According to the optimal cut-off value of PDW and RDW by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, we divided patients into PDWHigh (≥ 16.75%), PDWLow (< 16.75%), RDWHigh (≥ 14.25%), and RDWLow (< 14.25%) subgroups. Overall survival (OS) was significantly worse in patients with PDWHigh than in those with PDWLow (P = 0.0015), as was disease specific survival (P = 0.043). OS was also significantly worse in patients with RDWHigh than in those with RDWLow (P <  0.0001), as was disease specific survival (P = 0.0002). Multivariate analysis for OS revealed that both PDW and RDW were independent prognostic indicators. Patients were then given PDW-RDW score by adding points for their different subgroups (1 point each for PDWHigh and RDWHigh; 0 points for PDWLow and RDWLow). OS significantly differed by PDW-RDW score (P <  0.0001), as did disease specific survival (P = 0.0005). In multivariate analysis for OS, PDW-RDW score was found to be an independent prognostic indicator. CONCLUSIONS: The prognosis of GC patients can be precisely predictable by using both PDW and RDW.

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a common toxic mycotoxin and is detectable in pregnant women. Animal studies have revealed that AFB1 caused the lysis of erythrocytes and a decrease in hemoglobin. We conducted a prospective cohort study in Guangxi, China, in order to evaluate the association between AFB1 exposure and anemia in pregnant women during the entire pregnancy. A total of 616 pregnant women from the Guangxi Zhuang Birth Cohort were included in the study. Serum AFB1-albumin (AFB1-ALB) adduct levels were measured. The effect of AFB1-ALB adducts on hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) were analyzed by using multivariable linear regression. The risks of anemia from AFB1-ALB adduct exposure were assessed by multivariable logistic regression. We found that the AFB1-ALB adduct was significantly associated with a decrease in Hb (ß = -4.99, 95% CI: -8.42, -1.30), MCV (ß = -4.58, 95% CI: -7.23, -1.94), MCH (ß = -1.86, 95% CI: -2.87, -0.85), and MCHC (ß = -5.23, 95% CI: -8.28, -2.17) in the first trimester with the third tertile of AFB1-ALB adducts when compared with the first tertile. Furthermore, the third tertile of the AFB1-ALB adduct significantly increased the risk of anemia by 2.90 times than compared to the first tertile in the first trimester (OR = 3.90, 95% CI: 1.67, 9.14). A significant positive does-response relationship existed between AFB1-ALB adduct levels and anemia risk (Ptrend = 0.001). When dividing anemia types, we only found that the third tertile of AFB1-ALB adduct increased the risk of microcytic hypochromic anemia (MHA) in the first trimester (OR = 14.37, 95% CI: 3.08, 67.02) and second trimester (OR = 4.75, 95% CI: 1.96, 11.51). These findings demonstrate the correlation between maternal AFB1 exposure during early pregnancy and risk of anemia, especially MHA, and during different trimesters in Southern China. More efforts should be made to diminish AFB1 exposure for pregnant women.

We performed a detailed analysis of changes in the profiles of osmotic deformability using the method of gradient ektacytometry. Changes in all determinants that form the deformation properties of red blood cells in Wistar rats in the juvenile period and before puberty were determined. The dynamics of the formation of the rheological properties of the blood after birth is characterized by a wave-like change in the studied determinants. The changes are explained by adaptive reactions to extrauterine life as a result of hematopoiesis activation and the transition of the red bone marrow to a new level of functioning with the predominant replacement of physiological reticulocytosis in newborns with mature erythrocytes. The most critical period is from 10 days to 1 month after birth. Starting from the second month, the deformation parameters of erythrocytes are stabilized.

Red grape (Vitis vinifera L.) pomace's (RGP) beneficial bioactive compounds could improve growth and meat quality traits in chickens and thus valorize RGP waste that is usually disposed in landfills to the detriment of the environment. This study investigated the effect of RGP inclusion in diets of Hy-line Silver Brown cockerels on physiological and meat quality responses. Five isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets were formulated by mixing a standard grower diet with RGP at 0 (G0), 15 (G15), 30 (G30), 45 (G45) and 60 g/kg (G60). A total of 250, 5-week-old cockerels (304.6 ± 6.57 g live-weight) were evenly allocated to 25 pens replicated 5 times per experimental diet. No linear and quadratic trends (P > 0.05) were observed for overall feed intake, body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and meat quality traits as dietary RGP levels increased. Erythrocytes linearly decreased (P < 0.05), whereas mean corpuscular hemoglobin and urea linearly increased (P < 0.05) with RGP levels. There were significant quadratic effects for glucose, phosphorus, total protein, albumin, globulin, and cholesterol, from which a maximum RGP inclusion level was calculated to be 43 g/kg. In conclusion, dietary red grape pomace had no adverse effect on physiological parameters and meat quality traits of Hy-line Silver Brown cockerels. However, including red grape pomace beyond 43 g/kg could compromise serum biochemical parameters of the birds.

Megaloblastic anemia (MA) patients often exhibit hemolysis, but it is not clear whether there are other hemolytic mechanisms in addition to intramedullary hemolysis. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical characteristics of 124 MA patients, measured erythrocyte physical parameters in two patients with hemolysis and one healthy volunteer by atomic force microscopy, and measured 18F-FDG uptake in one MA patient with hemolysis. In multivariate analysis, hemolysis was associated with mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and indirect bilirubin. A receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, with sensitivity of 83.1% and specificity of 68.7%, suggested that the MCV cutoff value that predicts hemolysis is 116.4 fL. Hb was negatively correlated with MCV in the hemolysis group (r = -0.317, P = 0.007) but not in the nonhemolysis group. The erythrocyte peak-valley value, average cell surface roughness and surface area in the MA patients with hemolysis were significantly lower than those in controls (P < 0.05). 18F-FDG uptake by the liver and spleen was diffuse and increased in MA patients undergoing hemolysis. MA combined with extramedullary hemolysis could be caused by macrophages removing mechanically damaged erythrocytes and the retention of erythrocytes with decreased deformability when blood circulates through narrow spaces in the liver and spleen.

BACKGROUND: Evidence has emerged that anemia is associated with dementia, but data on the relationships of red blood cell distribution width (RDW) with dementia and cognitive function in older adults are sparse. OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate the associations of RDW with dementia and global cognitive performance among rural-dwelling Chinese older adults and further to examine their associations by anemia status. METHODS: This population-based cross-sectional study included 5,115 participants (age≥65 years, 57.0%women) in the baseline examination (March-September 2018) of the Multimodal Interventions to Delay Dementia and Disability in rural China (MIND-CHINA). We collected data through face-to-face interviews, clinical examinations, and laboratory tests. Global cognitive function was evaluated using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). We defined dementia, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and vascular dementia (VaD) following the respective international criteria. Data were analyzed using multinomial logistic and general linear regression models. RESULTS: Of all participants, 300 were diagnosed with dementia, including 195 with AD and 95 VaD. The multiple-adjusted odds ratio of dementia associated with quartiles of RDW were 1.45 (95%CI: 0.87-2.44), 1.00 (reference), 1.77 (1.07-2.93), and 2.28 (1.40-3.72). Similar J-shaped patterns existed for the association of RDW with odds ratio of AD and VaD. Anemia was not significantly associated with dementia. The J-shaped associations of RDW with dementia and subtypes were statistically evident only among participants without anemia. There was an inverted J-shaped relationship between RDW quartiles and ß-coefficients of MMSE score. CONCLUSION: There is a J-shaped association between RDW level and likelihood of dementias among rural-dwelling Chinese older adults, especially among people without anemia.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia (WAIHA) present with anemia that is highly heterogeneous, and often have macrocytic anemia with inappropriately elevated mean corpuscular volume (MCV). The goal of this retrospectivecase study is to elucidate the characteristics of anemia in patients with idiopathic WAIHA. PROCEDURES: The hematological parameters were analyzed by automated hematology analyzers in 19 consecutive patients with idiopathic WAIHA. Thecontent of hemoglobin (Hb) in the reticulocytes was assessed as reticulocyte Hb equivalent (RET-He). Relevant laboratory data and medical records were retrospectively studied. RESULTS: The median MCV was 102.7 fL and ten patients had macrocytic anemia with MCV above 100 fL. There was a significant correlation between the percentage of reticulocytes and MCV. The median RET-He value was 35.9 pg, and the reticulocytes of patients with higher MCV had higher RET-He. There was a significant correlation between red cell volume distribution width (RDW) andMCV, while the association between RDW and RET-He was not significant. Red blood cell agglutination was not seen in any of the patients. Relative folate deficiency was implied to contribute to the increased Hb content in the reticulocytes of WAIHA patients. CONCLUSION: Reticulocytes in WAIHA patients often contain more Hb than normal reticulocytes and become inappropriately large, possibly due to relative folate deficiency. Elevated MCV in WAIHA patients is due to the increase in both the number and the Hb content of reticulocytes.

BACKGROUND: Anemia and red cell distribution width (RDW) have been linked to poor cognitive performance, pending studies of underlying mechanisms. OBJECTIVE: We examined cross-sectional relationships of initial RDW status (v1), RDW change (δ), and anemia with brain structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) markers, including global and cortical brain and hippocampal and white matter lesion (WML) volumes, 5-6 years later. METHODS: Data were used from three prospective visits within the Healthy Aging in Neighborhoods of Diversity Across the Life Span (HANDLS) study with complete v1 (2004-2009) and v2 (2009-2013) exposures and ancillary sMRI data at vscan (2011-2015, n = 213, mean v1 to vscan time: 5.7 years). Multivariable-adjusted linear regression models were conducted, overall, by sex, by race, and within non-anemics, correcting for multiple testing with q-values. RESULTS: In minimally adjusted models (socio-demographics and follow-up time), anemiav1 and RDWv1 were consistently associated with smaller bilateral hippocampal volumes overall, and among females (q < 0.05), without significant sex differences. RDWv1 was related to smaller select regional cortical brain gray and white matter volumes in hematological measure-adjusted models; anemiav1 was associated with larger WML volumes only among whites. CONCLUSION: In summary, baseline anemia and RDW were consistently associated with smaller bilateral hippocampal volumes, particularly among females, while anemia was linked to larger WML volume among Whites. In hematological measure-adjusted models, baseline RDW was linked to smaller regional gray and white matter volumes. Pending studies with sMRI repeats, randomized controlled trials are needed, demonstrating associations of anemia and elevated RDW with reduced brain volumes and cognitive dysfunction.

This single-arm interventional study examined the effect of a 4-week ketogenic diet (KD) on aerobic capacity and discipline-specific performance in female (n = 11) and male (n = 11) CrossFit-trained athletes. The participants performed incremental cycling (ICT) and Fight Gone Bad (FGB) tests after consuming a customary diet and a KD. Pre- and post-ICT exercise blood samples were also analysed. Consuming a KD had a slight impact on aerobic capacity and no relevant effect on CrossFit-specific performance. In females, consuming a KD led to an 10.4% decrease in peak oxygen uptake during the ICT (p = 0.027) and resulted in certain alterations in haematological parameters (haemoglobin (HGB), mean corpuscular HGB, and mean corpuscular HGB concentration). Furthermore, in males, alanine aminotransferase activity increased with a simultaneous improvement in the post-ICT blood acid-base balance after consuming a KD. The pre-exercise bilirubin concentration was also elevated in the entire group after consuming a KD. In conclusion, female CrossFit-trained athletes seem to be prone to aerobic performance decrements and increased risk of developing haematological disturbances when consuming a KD. In males who consumed a KD, there was an undesirable alanine aminotransferase elevation and a small tendency towards improved acid-base status. Moreover, consuming a KD had no effect on discipline-specific performance in CrossFit-trained athletes.

Objectives: Changes in hematological parameters are becoming evident as important early markers of COVID-19. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) has been shown to be associated with increased severity of COVID-19. In this study, we aim to explore the various hematological variables in COVID-19 positive patients with T2DM, so as to act early and improve patient outcomes.Methods: Medical e-records of seventy adult patients with T2DM who were COVID-19 positive have been analyzed in this retrospective cohort study. Demographic, clinical and laboratory parameters for these patients were examined.Results: Of the seventy patients with T2DM, 48.88% had poorly controlled diabetes. 70.69% were pyrexial, 56.25% were tachycardic and 38.58% were asymptomatic on presentation. Amongst the hematological parameters, anemia was seen in 10% of males and 15.38% of females. 20% had a high red-blood-cell-distribution-width (RDW). 7.27% had thrombocytosis and 3.64% had thrombocytopenia. 73.3% had a high platelet-distribution-width (PDW) and 44.44% had an increased mean-platelet-volume (MPV). 16.36% were neutropenic and 16.67% had lymphocytopenia.Conclusion: Diabetic COVID-19 positive patients have been shown to have prominent manifestations of the hemopoietic-system with varied hematological profiles. Recognizing the implications of these variables early in primary-care, can help clinicians aid management decisions and dictate early referral to secondary-care services, to help improve prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have showed that red cell distribution width (RDW) may be an inflammatory status, and it may be used to predict prognosis of acute pancreatitis (AP). However, there are no systematic reviews for the evidence, and the association between RDW and AP is still not completely understood. Therefore, we will undertake a systematic review of the literature to summarize previous evidence regarding this topic, in order to clarify the value of RDW predicting prognosis of patients with AP. METHODS: We will search EMBASE, Web of Knowledge, PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov and Cochrane Library from their inception to Mar 2021 to retrieve relevant studies. Two authors independently judged study eligibility and extracted data. Heterogeneity will be examined by computing the Q statistic and I2 statistic. RESULTS: This study proved the Efficiency of RDW in predicting mortality and severity of patients with AP. And provided easy method for clinical evaluation for AP patients. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this systematic review will show the value of RDW predicting prognosis of patients with AP. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval is unnecessary as this protocol is only for systematic review and does not involve privacy data. The findings of this study will be disseminated electronically through a peer-review publication or presented at a relevant conference.

BACKGROUND: Hemoglobin/red cell distribution width (HR) and platelet/lymphocyte (PLR) ratios are considered effective prognostic markers in various cancers. We have proposed a new prognostic parameter: HR+PLR. The aim of this study is to explore the prognostic value of the HR+PLR scoring system in patients with gastric cancer liver metastasis. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 306 patients with gastric cancer liver metastases admitted to our hospital from 2007 to 2014. According to the size of HR value and PLR value, we will divide the patients into three groups, namely, HR+PLR: (1) 0 points: HR > 1.02 and PLR < 128; (2) 1 point: HR > 1.02 and PLR > 128 and HR < 1.02 and PLR < 128; and (3) 2 points: HR < 1.02 and PLR > 128. RESULTS: The HR+PLR score was statistically different from age (P = 0.049), T stage (P < 0.001), N stage (P = 0.017), number of liver metastases (P = 0.018), gastrectomy (P < 0.001), hepatectomy (P = 0.001), peritoneal metastasis (P = 0.012), prognostic nutritional index (PNI) (P = 0.028), and neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio (NLR) (P = 0.045). The HR+PLR scoring system has a higher area under the ROC curve (AUC value) than PNI, PLR, HR, and PLR (AUC = 0.798, P < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, gastrectomy (P = 0.001), hepatectomy (P < 0.001), chemotherapy (P = 0.014), and HR+PLR score (P < 0.001) were considered independent prognostic factors. CONCLUSION: For patients with gastric cancer liver metastasis, the HR+PLR score is a simple, reliable, and economic prognostic marker.

Structural aspects of red blood cells have been associated with cardiovascular disease. No data linking mean corpuscular volume (MCV) to clinical outcomes and on-treatment platelet reactivity in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) are available. We investigated a composite of atherothrombotic events and target vessel restenosis or reocclusion following infrainguinal stenting for stable PAD. Residual platelet reactivity was measured by light transmission aggregometry (LTA) and the VerifyNow assays. We included 104 patients receiving dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) with aspirin and clopidogrel. In receiver-operating characteristic analysis, MCV effectively discriminated between patients with and without adverse outcomes and identified a MCV ≤90.8 fL as optimal cutoff. Adverse outcomes occurred significantly more often in patients with low MCV (log-rank P = .002). In univariable Cox regression analysis, low MCV was associated with an increased risk of future adverse outcomes (hazard ratio [HR]: 2.662 [95%CI: 1.304-5.434]; P = .007) and remained significantly associated after adjustment (HR: 2.591 [95%CI: 1.242-5.403]; P = .011). Mean corpuscular volume was inversely correlated with arachidonic acid (AA)- and adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-inducible platelet reactivity by LTA and with the VerifyNow aspirin assay. Low MCV is associated with adverse outcomes over 2 years following infrainguinal stenting. Mean corpuscular volume correlates inversely with AA- and ADP-inducible platelet reactivity during DAPT.
