RESUMO

The grafting of polymers and oligomers of ethylene oxide onto surfaces is widely used to prevent nonspecific adsorption of biological material on sensors and membrane surfaces. In this report, we show for the first time the robust covalent attachment of short oligoethylene oxide-terminated alkenes (CH(3)O(CH(2)CH(2)O)(3)(CH(2))(11)-(CH═CH(2)) [EO(3)] and CH(3)O(CH(2)CH(2)O)(6)(CH(2))(11)-(CH═CH(2)) [EO(6)]) from the reaction of alkenes onto silicon-rich silicon nitride surfaces at room temperature using UV light. Reflectometry is used to monitor in situ the nonspecific adsorption of bovine serum albumin (BSA) and fibrinogen (FIB) onto oligoethylene oxide coated silicon-rich silicon nitride surfaces (EO(n)-Si(x)N(4), x > 3) in comparison with plasma-oxidized silicon-rich silicon nitride surfaces (SiO(y)-Si(x)N(4)) and hexadecane-coated Si(x)N(4) surfaces (C(16)-Si(x)N(4)). A significant reduction in protein adsorption on EO(n)-Si(x)N(4) surfaces was achieved, adsorption onto EO(3)-Si(x)N(4) and EO(6)-Si(x)N(4) were 0.22 mg m(-2) and 0.08 mg m(-2), respectively. The performance of the obtained EO(3) and EO(6) layers is comparable to those of similar, highly protein-repellent monolayers formed on gold and silver surfaces. EO(6)-Si(x)N(4) surfaces prevented significantly the adsorption of BSA (0.08 mg m(-2)). Atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray reflectivity and static water contact angle measurements were employed to characterize the modified surfaces. In addition, the stability of EO(6)-Si(x)N(4) surfaces in phosphate-buffered saline solution (PBS) and alkaline condition (pH 10) was studied. Prolonged exposure of the surfaces to PBS solution for 1 week or alkaline condition for 2 h resulted in only minor degradation of the ethylene oxide moieties and no oxidation of the Si(x)N(4) substrates was observed. Highly stable antifouling coatings on Si(x)N(4) surfaces significantly broaden the application potential of silicon nitride-coated microdevices, and in particular of microfabricated filtration membranes.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the optical properties, color and translucency, of the new silorane-based resin composite and to compare it to universal dimethacrylate-based composites. METHODS: Six dimethacrylate-based resin composites and one silorane-based resin composite (all A2 shade) were studied. Color of non-polymerized and polymerized composites was measured against white and black backgrounds using a spectroradiometer. Changes in color (ΔE*(ab)), translucency (ΔTP) and color coordinates (ΔL*, Δa* and Δb*) were calculated for each resin composite. Results were evaluated using a one-way ANOVA, a Tukey's test and a t-test. RESULTS: The polymerization-dependent ΔE*(ab) ranged from 4.7 to 9.1, with the smallest difference for the silorane-based resin composite. The color changes of silorane-based composite were due to the changes of coordinates Δa* and Δb*. However, for the dimethacrylate-based composites, the color changes mainly originated by ΔL*and Δb*. The silorane composite exhibited the smallest TP values. Tukey's test confirmed significant statistical differences (p<0.05) between mean TP values of Filtek Silorane and each brand of dimethacrylate-based composites before and after polymerization. CONCLUSIONS: The new silorane-based restorative system showed different optical properties compared to clinically successful dimethacrylate composites. The silorane composite exhibited better polymerization-dependent chromatic stability, and a lower translucency compared to other tested products.

RESUMO

Thermo-sensitive semi-IPN hydrogels were prepared via in situ copolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) with poly(ethylene glycol)-co-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PEG-co-PCL) macromer in the presence of sodium alginate by UV irradiation technology. The effects of the sodium alginate content, temperature, and salt on the swelling behavior of the as-obtained hydrogels were studied. The results showed that the swelling ratio of the hydrogels increased with the increasing sodium alginate content at the same temperature, and decreased with the increase in temperature. The salt sensitivity of the semi-IPN hydrogels was dependent on the content of sodium alginate introduced in the hydrogels. The mechanical rheology of the hydrogels and in vitro release behavior of bovine serum albumin (BSA) in situ encapsulated within the hydrogels were also investigated. It was found that the introduction of sodium alginate with semi-IPN structure improved mechanical strength of the hydrogels and the cumulative release percentage of BSA from the hydrogels. Such double-sensitive semi-IPN hydrogel materials could be exploited as potential candidates for drug delivery carriers.
