In well-developed countries, people have started to pay additional attention to preserving healthy dietary habits, as it has become common knowledge that neglecting them may easily lead to severe health impairments, namely obesity, malnutrition, several cardiovascular diseases, type-2 diabetes, cancers, hypertensions, and inflammations. Various types of functional foods were developed that are enriched with vitamins, probiotics, prebiotics, and dietary fibers in order to develop a healthy balanced diet and to improve the general health of consumers. Numerous kinds of fiber are easily found in nature, but they often have a noticeable undesired impact on the sensory features of foods or on the digestive system. This led to development of modified dietary fibers, which have little to no impact on taste of foods they are added to. At the same time, they possess all the benefits similar to those of prebiotics, such as regulating gastrointestinal microbiota composition, increasing satiety, and improving the metabolic parameters of a human. In the following review, the evidence supporting prebiotic properties of modified starches, particularly resistant starches and their derivatives, resistant dextrins, was assessed and deliberated, which allowed drawing an interesting conclusion on the subject.

PURPOSE: Ingesting beverages containing a high concentration of sodium under euhydrated conditions induces hypervolemia. Because carbohydrate can enhance interstitial fluid absorption via the sodium-glucose cotransporter and insulin-dependent renal sodium reabsorption, adding carbohydrate to high-sodium beverages may augment the hypervolemic response. METHODS: To test this hypothesis, we had nine healthy young males ingest 1087 ± 82 mL (16-17 mL per kg body weight) of water or aqueous solution containing 0.7% NaCl, 0.7% NaCl + 6% dextrin, 0.9% NaCl, or 0.9% NaCl + 6% dextrin under euhydrated conditions. Each drink was divided into six equal volumes and ingested at 10-min intervals. During each trial, participants remained resting for 150 min. Measurements were made at baseline and every 30 min thereafter. RESULTS: Plasma osmolality decreased with water ingestion (P ≤ 0.023), which increased urine volume such that there was no elevation in plasma volume from baseline (P ≥ 0.059). The reduction in plasma osmolality did not occur with ingestion of solution containing 0.7% or 0.9% NaCl (P ≥ 0.051). Consequently, urine volume was 176-288 mL smaller than after water ingestion and resulted in plasma volume expansion at 60 min and later times (P ≤ 0.042). In addition, net fluid balance was 211-329 mL greater than after water ingestion (P ≤ 0.028). Adding 6% dextrin to 0.7% or 0.9% NaCl solution resulted in plasma volume expansion within as little as 30 min (P ≤ 0.026), though the magnitudes of the increases in plasma volume were unaffected (P ≥ 0.148). CONCLUSION: Dextrin mediates an earlier hypervolemic response associated with ingestion of high-sodium solution in resting euhydrated young men. (247/250 words).

Targeting the gut-liver axis by manipulating the intestinal microbiome is a promising therapy for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This study modulated the intestinal microbiota to explore whether resistant dextrin, as a potential prebiotic, could ameliorate high-fat diet (HFD)-induced hepatic steatosis in C57BL/6J mice. After two months of feeding, significant hepatic steatosis with mitochondrial dysfunction was observed in the HFD-fed mice. However, the concentrations of triglycerides and malondialdehyde in liver tissue and the levels of alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase in the serum of mice fed an HFD plus resistant dextrin diet (HFID) were significantly decreased compared to the HFD-fed mice. Additionally, hepatic mitochondrial integrity and reactive oxygen species accumulation were improved in HFID-fed mice, ameliorating hepatic steatosis. The fecal microbiome of HFD-fed mice was enriched in Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, and Globicatella, while resistant dextrin increased the abundance of Parabacteroides, Blautia, and Dubosiella. Major changes in fecal metabolites were confirmed for HFID-fed mice, including those related to entero-hepatic circulation (i.e., bile acids), tryptophan metabolism (e.g., indole derivatives), and lipid metabolism (e.g., lipoic acid), as well as increased antioxidants including isorhapontigenin. Furthermore, resistant dextrin decreased inflammatory cytokine levels and intestinal permeability and ameliorated intestinal damage. Together, these findings augmented current knowledge on prebiotic treatment for NAFLD.

We aimed to study the effect of consuming an alcohol-free beer with modified carbohydrates composition (almost completely eliminating maltose and adding isomaltulose (16.5 g day-1) and resistant maltodextrin (5.28 g day-1)) in gut microbiome, compared to regular alcohol-free beer in subjects with T2DM or prediabetes and overweight/obesity. This is a pilot, randomized, double-blinded, crossover study including a sub-sample of a global study with 14 subjects: (a) consuming 66 cl day-1 of regular alcohol-free beer for the first 10 weeks and 66 cl day-1 of modified alcohol-free beer for the next 10 weeks; (b) the same described intervention in opposite order. BMI homogeneously decreased after both interventions. Glucose and HOMA-IR significantly decreased just after the participants consumed modified alcohol-free beer. These findings were in the same line as those reported in the global study. Dominant bacteria at baseline were Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and Tenericutes. Parabacteroides, from the Porphymonadaceae family, resulted as the feature with the greatest difference between beers (ANCOM analysis, W = 15). Feature-volatility analysis confirmed the importance of Parabacteroides within the model. Alcohol-free beers consumption resulted in an enhancement of pathways related to metabolism according to PICRUSt analysis, including terpenoid-quinone, lipopolysaccharides and N-glycan biosynthesis. Thus, an alcohol-free beer including the substitution of regular carbohydrates for low doses of isomaltulose and the addition of maltodextrin within meals significantly impacts gut microbiota in diabetic subjects with overweight or obesity. This could, at least partially, explain the improvement in insulin resistance previously found after taking modified alcohol-free alcohol.Clinical Trial Registration: Registered under ClinicalTrials.gov identifier no. PURPOSE: The effectiveness of using anti-adhesion agents in laparoscopic surgery is controversial. We compared the outcomes of patients exposed to anti-adhesion agents (barrier group) with those of patients not exposed (no barrier group) in laparoscopic surgery. METHODS: Using a nationwide claim-based database in Japan, we analyzed data from patients who underwent laparoscopic surgery between 2005 and 2019 and compared the patient characteristics and the proportion of those with bowel obstruction between the barrier and no barrier groups. We also performed several sensitivity and subgroup analyses. RESULTS: Of the 57,499 patients who met the inclusion criteria, 14,360 and 43,139 were assigned to the barrier and no barrier groups, respectively. The proportion of patients with a bowel obstruction in the two groups did not differ among all patients hospitalized for obstruction (1.1 vs. 1.1%, p = 0.63) and those requiring surgery (0.2 vs. 0.2%, p = 0.39). In the sensitivity analysis with propensity score matching, the incidences of bowel obstruction between the barrier and non-barrier groups were equivocal (1.3 vs. 1.6%), but statistically marginal (chi-square test, p = 0.035; log-rank test, p = 0.09). CONCLUSION: The use of barrier agents for adhesive prevention did not show clear effectiveness for the prevention of bowel obstruction after laparoscopic surgery for unselected cases. Further studies focusing on more specific procedures are needed.

Aedes aegypti is the vector of several viral diseases. The main way to control these diseases is to fight the vector. Thus, it is necessary to breed mosquitoes in the laboratory in order to develop strategies to control these insects. In laboratories, different carbohydrates are used for feeding mosquitoes. The aim of this study is to evaluate the longevity and the weight of Ae. aegypti fed with different carbohydrates diets. As methods, 120 mosquitoes were distributed in insectaries and each group received a different diet, based on honey, dextrose or maltodextrin. To assess the longevity, survival analysis was performed using the Long Rank test and chi square test. To assess the weight, the dead insects were frozen and weighed at the end of the experiment. As results it was observed that mosquitoes fed with the honey, maltodextrin and dextrose diet lived on average 33, 35 and 47 days respectively. When weight was assessed, mosquitoes fed with honey weighed 125 ± (35.3) µg, while those fed with dextrose and maltodextrin weighed 225 ± (35.3) µg and 275 ± (35.3) µg respectively. The results show that the intake of dextrose and maltodextrin by Ae. aegypti adults increases their survival and their weight.(AU)


O Aedes aegypti é vetor de várias doenças virais. A principal maneira de controlar essas doenças é combatendo o seu vetor. Nesse sentido, é necessário criar esses mosquitos em laboratório, visando desenvolver estratégias de controle. Nos laboratórios, diferentes carboidratos são utilizados na alimentação de mosquitos. O objetivo deste estudo é avaliar longevidade e peso de Ae. aegypti alimentados com diferentes fontes de carboidratos. Como método, distribuíram-se 120 mosquitos insetários. Cada grupo recebeu uma dieta diferente à base de mel, dextrose ou maltodextrina. Para avaliar a longevidade, a análise de sobrevida foi realizada pelo teste de Logrank e pelo teste de qui quadrado. Para avaliar o peso, os insetos mortos foram congelados e pesados ​​no final do experimento. Como resultado, observou-se que os mosquitos alimentados com a dieta à base de mel, maltodextrina e dextrose viveram em média 33, 35 e 47 dias, respectivamente. Com relação ao peso, os mosquitos alimentados com mel pesavam 125 ± (35,3)µg, enquanto os alimentados com dextrose e maltodextrina pesavam 225 ± (35,3)µg e 275 ± (35,3)µg, respectivamente. Os resultados mostram que a ingestão de dieta à base de dextrose e maltodextrina por Ae. aegypti adultos aumenta sua sobrevivência e seu peso.(AU)

Resistant dextrin (RD), a short chain glucose polymer, has been shown to improve type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in clinical studies. However, the improvement of adipose tissue inflammation and specific mechanisms of RD supplementation in obesity have not been fully investigated. Therefore, we examined whether RD attenuates obesity and adipose tissue inflammation in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice. Male C57BL/6 mice were fed a chow diet, a HFD or a HFD with RD supplementation for 12 weeks. Body weight (BW), fasting blood glucose (FBG), epididymal fat accumulation, serum total triglyceride (TG), free fatty acid (FFA) and inflammatory cytokine levels (TNF-α, IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-10) were measured. Inflammation markers and macrophage infiltration in epididymal adipose tissue were observed. After 12 weeks of intervention, the body weight gain of mice in RD supplementation group was less than that in HFD group. FBG, epididymal fat accumulation, serum TG and FFA levels were reduced in RD supplementation group compared with HFD group. Moreover, serum and mRNA levels of IL-6 were significantly reduced in the RD supplementation group. In addition, RD supplementation reduced macrophage infiltration, regulated polarization of macrophage and inhibited NF-κB signaling in epididymal adipose tissue. In conclusion, RD reduces obesity and attenuates adipose tissue inflammation in HFD-fed mice, and the inhibition of NF-κB signaling may be a presumed mechanism for its effects.

BACKGROUND: Adhesion formation after hepatectomy creates problems for repeat hepatectomy. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of a spray (AdSpray) and sheet adhesion barrier (Seprafilm) in a rat hepatectomy-induced adhesion model. METHODS: Thirty male Sprague-Dawley rats underwent partial resection of the left lateral liver lobe. They were randomly assigned to control (n = 10), AdSpray (n = 10), and Seprafilm groups. Seven days after surgery, the animals were sacrificed, and adhesions at the hepatic resection surface were blindly evaluated. RESULTS: In the control group, adhesions were formed in all 10 animals (100%), with a 69% adhesion extent (mean). In the AdSpray group, the incidence of adhesions (40%) and the adhesion extent (mean, 10%) were significantly lower than in the control group (incidence; p = 0.0147, adhesion extent; p = 0.0007). In the Seprafilm group, the incidence of adhesions was 70%. The adhesion extent of Seprafilm (mean, 30%) was significantly lower than in the control group (p = 0.0492). No significant differences were observed between the AdSpray and Seprafilm groups. As for histopathological examination, animals in the AdSpray group showed a similar healing profile to that of the control group without delayed healing and regeneration of mesothelial cells. In contrast, the Seprafilm group showed ongoing foreign body reaction to Seprafilm, and regeneration of mesothelial cells was immature at 7 days. CONCLUSIONS: Both the spray-type gel and sheet adhesion barriers significantly reduced adhesion formation after hepatectomy. The spray-type adhesion barrier caused no adverse events and induced favorable healing. These adhesion barriers may be effective in hepatectomy. Further animal studies and clinical trials are required to determine their benefits in clinical use.

There is growing interest in studying dietary fiber to stimulate microbiome changes that might prevent or alleviate inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, dietary fiber effects have shown varying degrees of efficacy, for reasons that are unclear. This study examined whether the effects of isomaltodextrin on gut microbiota and IBD were dependent on dose or host sex, using an Interleukin (IL)-10 deficient murine colitis model. After 12 weeks, colonic IL-12p70 was depressed in male mice receiving high-dose isomaltodextrin supplementation compared to the control group (p = 0.04). Male mice receiving high-dose isomaltodextrin exhibited changes in microbial alpha-diversity, including enhanced richness and evenness (p = 0.01) and limited reduction in the relative abundance of Coprococcus (q = 0.08), compared to the control group. These microbial compositional changes were negatively associated with IL-12p70 levels in the male group (rs ≤ -0.51, q ≤ 0.08). In contrast, female mice receiving isomaltodextrin displayed a reduction in alpha-diversity and Coprococcus abundance and a high level of IL-12p70, as did the control group. Together, these results indicate that isomaltodextrin altered the gut microbial composition linking specific immune-regulatory cytokine responses, while the interactions among fiber, microbiota and immune response were dose dependent and largely sex specific. The results further indicate that interactions between environmental and host factors can affect microbiome manipulation in the host.

Pyrodextrin (PD) is prepared from starch by heat treatment and is resistant to amylase. We hypothesized that PD might have prebiotic potential affecting the microbiota composition, because it contains a non-digestible portion that may behave as dietary fiber. This study investigated the effects of PD supplementation on growth performance, gut morphology, short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and the bacterial community in weaned piglets receiving dietary supplementation of 0.5% PD. The piglets in the PD (treated) groups showed greater antioxidant capacity and feed efficiency (P < 0.05), as well as improved intestinal morphology in comparison with the piglets in the weaned (control) group. Gut microbiota profiles were assessed through 16S rRNA sequencing on the ileum contents and feces of early weaned piglets. Several genus-level enrichments and depletions were observed in response to PD treatment. Of note, PD supplementation decreased the relative abundance of pathogenic organisms, including Defluviicoccus and Gardnerella, while markedly increasing that of commensal bacteria (genera Psychrobacter and Prevotella), which have important roles in nutrient absorption and immune response regulation. The most notable effect in the PD treatment groups was increased production of SCFAs in the feces of PD-treated weaned piglets. Correlation analysis revealed that the improvement in SCFAs was positively correlated with the increase in SCFA-producing bacteria. Overall, this study provides a more comprehensive understanding of the effects of PD supplementation on the fecal microbial community and the modulation of SCFA production in early weaned piglets, thus indicating that PD can be used to alleviate weaning stress in piglets.

To investigate whether oral intake of highly branched α-glucan isomaltodextrin (IMD) could stimulate ileal glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) secretion, we examined (1) the digestibility of IMD, (2) the digestion and absorption rates of IMD, in rat small intestine and (3) portal GLP-1 concentration in rats given IMD. In Expt 1, ileorectostomised rats were given a 3 % IMD diet for 10 d. Separately, a 16-h in vitro digestion of IMD, using porcine pancreatic α-amylase and brush-border membrane vesicles from rat small intestine, was conducted. In Expt 2, upon 24-h fasting, rats were given any of glucose, IMD and high-amylose maize starch (HAMS) (1 g/kg of body weight). In Expt 3, caecectomised rats were given 0·2 % neomycin sulphate and a 5 % IMD diet for 10 d. The in vivo and in vitro digestibility of IMD was 70-80 %. The fraction of IMD digested in vitro for the first 120 min was 67 % of that in maize starch. The AUC for 0-120 min of plasma glucose concentration was significantly lower in HAMS group and tended to be lower in IMD group than in the glucose group. Finally, we also observed that, when compared with control rats, glucose of IMD significantly stimulated and improved the concentration of portal active GLP-1 in antibiotic-administered, caecectomised rats. We concluded that IMD was slowly digested and the resulting glucose stimulated GLP-1 secretion in rat small intestine. Oral delivery of slowly released IMD glucose to the small intestine probably exerts important, yet unknown, physiological effects on the recipient.

To investigate the effect of in ovo feeding (IOF) of beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate (HMB), dextrin and post-hatching water and feed deprivation time on growth performance of broilers, 1,500 eggs were assigned into 15 experimental runs of Box-Behnken design, including three levels IOF of HMB (0%, 0.5% and 1%), dextrin (0%, 20% and 40%) and three levels of the first water and feed deprivation (6, 27 and 48 hr). After hatching, day-old chicks (seven males and seven females) from each replicate were then selected and randomly assigned to 60 floor pens for a 42-day feeding trial. The experimental data were fitted to the quadratic response surface models, and the goodness of fit of the models was expressed by the R2 value. The interaction between IOF of dextrin and timing of first feed deprivation had the largest effect on body weight of chicks at day 7 (BW7) and corrected European production efficiency factor (EPEF). In ovo feeding of dextrin reduced negative effects of delayed access to feed and water after hatch up to 48 hr on BW7, body weight of chicks at day 42, EPEF and corrected EPEF. The results of the current study suggested that the EPEF corrected by hatchability could provide the better understanding of IOF experimental findings. The ridge optimization analysis revealed that the optimal levels of HMB and dextrin inclusion in eggs and timing of first feed deprivation for maximum corrected EPEF were 0.37, 15.94% and 7.22 hr, respectively. These results demonstrate that the Box-Behnken statistical design and response surface models are effective to describe the relationship between IOF of nutrients and pre-placement holding time and predict the performance of broilers to achieve the optimal target.

In present study, gene concentrated as well as bioreduction-ruptured nanogel with local enrichment positive charge while low cytotoxicity was developed for Bcl2 siRNA delivery featured in intracellular switch on/off controlled release. Dynamic covalent bond crosslinked nanogel was formed by thiolated PEI of 1.8 kDa(PEI-1.8 kDa)and biodegradable dextrin. Once nanogel was uptake by tumor cells, high concentration of glutathione (GSH) in cytosol could bioreducible -degrade and rupture the crosslink of this dextrin nanogel (DSP) into hypotoxic PEI-1.8 kDa and dextrin, following by burst release of packed siRNA and minimizing the restriction of polymer material for siRNA transcription. This switch on/off siRNA release strategy for gene therapy exhibited equal level of the deregulation of Bcl2 protein expression determined by western blot analysis compared with cationic PEI with 25 kDa molecular weight (PEI-25 kDa) in vitro. Moreover, the gene concentrated DSP based on hypotoxic PEI-1.8 kDa and biodegradable dextrin could be administrated intravenously for systematic therapy on safely. Tumor suppression study of DSP also exhibited a superior antitumor activity in 4T1-luc tumor cell bearing BALB/C mice. Furthermore, it exhibited lower cytotoxicity, almost none hemotoxicity, moreover avoiding recognition and clearance by RES system in healthy mice. Overall, these findings suggest that this reduction-sensitive while bioreduction-ruptured polymer nanogel is an innovative strategy and holds great promise for gene and drug delivery.

OBJECTIVES: This crossover study investigated the effect of consuming a beverage that contains soluble fiber dextrin (SFD) on appetite and food intake in adults to test the hypothesis that beverages that contain 10 or 20 g of fiber from SFD would be more satiating than the control beverage. METHODS: Forty-one participants consumed lunch with a beverage that contained 0 g, 10 g, or 20 g of fiber from SFD. Appetite questionnaires were completed and blood samples collected immediately before lunch and at regular intervals over the following 150 min. Then, participants were provided with an afternoon snack and the amount eaten was recorded. Participants then left the laboratory but were asked to complete hourly appetite questionnaires and record food intake for the remainder of the day. RESULTS: Consuming SFD had no effect on appetite over the 150 min after consumption of the lunch meal (P > 0.05). Hunger and desire to eat were lower and fullness higher after consumption of the beverage that contained 20 g of fiber from SFD (P < 0.05) after participants left the laboratory. There was no effect of consuming SFD on food intake at the snack meal or for the rest of the day (P > 0.05). Plasma glucose-dependent insulintropic polypeptide was lower during the 150 min after consumption of 20 g fiber from the SFD beverage (P < 0.05). There was no treatment effect on the plasma concentration of other biomarkers of glycemic response or appetite (P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Overall, the study results did not show an effect of SFD on appetite, food intake, and plasma markers of appetite for the first 150 min postconsumption. Further research is required to quantify how SFD influences appetite several hours after consumption.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To establish a porcine uterine horn adhesion model that mimicked laparoscopic procedures and use it to investigate the effect of a spray-type, novel dextrin hydrogel adhesion barrier (AdSpray; Terumo Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) on postsurgical adhesions. DESIGN: A single-blind randomized controlled trial (Canadian Task Force Classification I). SETTING: A Certified animal research facility. SUBJECTS: Sixteen female pigs. INTERVENTIONS: All animals underwent laparoscopically assisted adhesion-inducing surgery. The uterine horns and the peritoneum of the pelvic sidewall were injured. In the experimental group, AdSpray was applied to the injured site, and the handling of the sprayer was assessed. At 28 ± 1 days after surgery, animals were sacrificed, and adhesions at the injured site were evaluated. Uterine horn suture sites were examined under a light microscope to assess healing of the incised wound, the inflammatory reaction, abscess, and the foreign body reaction to the surgical suture. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The control group showed severe adhesions over the entire surface interface at the uterine horn suture sites and peritoneal resection site. Compared with the control treatment, AdSpray exhibited a higher percentage of adhesion-free sites (p < .001) and reduced the total adhesion score (p < .001). In the AdSpray group, no inflammation or abscess formation was observed on histopathological examination, and ideal healing of the suture sites was confirmed in all cases. CONCLUSION: Based on the results of the present study, the novel dextrin hydrogel shows excellent adhesion prevention and can be easily applied during laparoscopy using a dedicated sprayer.

'Polymer Enzyme Liposome Therapy' (PELT) is a two-step anticancer approach in which a liposomal drug and polymer-phospholipase conjugate are administered sequentially to target the tumour interstitium by the enhanced permeability and retention effect, and trigger rapid, local, drug release. To date, however, the concept has only been described theoretically. We synthesised two polymer conjugates of phospholipase C (PLC) and A2 (PLA2) and evaluated their ability to trigger anthracycline release from the clinically used liposomes, Caelyx® and DaunoXome®. N-(2-Hydroxypropyl)methacrylamide (HPMA) copolymer-PLC and a dextrin-PLA2 were synthesised and their enzymatic activity characterised. Doxorubicin release from polyethyleneglycol-coated (PEGylated) Caelyx® was relatively slow (<20%, 60 min), whereas daunomycin was rapidly released from non-PEGylated DaunoXome® (∼87%) by both enzymes. Incubation with dextrin-PLA2 triggered significantly less daunomycin release than HPMA copolymer-PLC, but when dextrin-PLA2 was pre-incubated with α-amylase, the rate of daunomycin release increased. DaunoXome®'s diameter increased in the presence of PLA2, while Caelyx®'s diameter was unaffected by free or conjugated PLA2. Dextrin-PLA2 potentiated the cytotoxicity of DaunoXome® to MCF-7 cells to a greater extent than free PLA2, while combining dextrin-PLA2 with Caelyx® resulted in antagonism, even in the presence of α-amylase, presumably due to steric hindrance by PEG. Our findings suggest that in vivo studies to evaluate PELT combinations should be further evaluated.

This study was conducted to determine the effect of in ovo feeding of dextrin (Dext) and iodinated casein (IC) on hatch and early growth in broilers. Three experiments were conducted at a commercial hatchery using a commercial Inovoject™ system with treatments occurring in conjunction with vaccination at transfer from incubator to hatcher units (18.5 to 19 d embryonic development). In all 3 experiments, approximately 15,000 eggs (2,500 eggs per group) were treated and transferred to a single hatcher unit. Treatments in Exp. 1 consisted of buffered saline solution alone (Control, Cont) or a dextrin solution (Dext, 18% maltodextrin, 10% potato starch dextrin) containing zero, 80, 240, 720, or 2,160 µg IC/mL. The results of this initial experiment indicated that broiler chicks at hatch that received 240 and 720 µg IC/mL in Dext were heavier (P < 0.05) compared to the other treatment groups; there were no differences in hatchability between groups. Based on these findings, subsequent studies used treatments of zero, 240, and 480 µg/mL IC in Dext or Cont. In Exp. 2, hatch weights in all treatment groups were higher (P < 0.05) compared to those receiving Cont. In Exp. 3, chicks given Dext alone or 240 and 480 µg/mL in saline weighed less at hatch compared to the other treatment groups. However, chicks provided Dext alone in Exp. 3 had less weight loss after a 24-hour holding period compared to the other groups. All treatment groups exhibited greater weight gain from one to 10 d compared to the Cont group. The results indicate that in ovo feeding of broiler embryos with Dext containing 240 and 480 µg IC/mL may have beneficial effects on broiler hatch weights and early growth rate.

Studies were conducted using a commercial InovojectTM system to determine effects of in ovo feeding of dextrin and iodinated casein (IC) on hatch and posthatch growth in broilers. At ∼18.5 d embryonic development, eggs were treated with 0, 240, or 480 µg IC/mL in saline (Cont, IC240, and IC480) or dextrin (Dext, DextIC240 and DextIC480). The Dext solution consisted of 18% maltodextrin and 10% potato starch dextrin; saline was the vehicle used by the company for in ovo vaccination. The volume for all in ovo treatments was 50 µL/injection. Eggs in Experiment 1 were transferred to a commercial hatcher unit whereas eggs in Experiments 2 and 3 were transferred to a research hatcher unit to assess effects of treatments on timing of hatch. At hatch, chicks were randomly selected and placed in floor pens and grown to 6 wk. In Experiment 1, there were no differences in hatch weights, but broilers provided Dext IC240 in ovo were heavier (P < 0.05) at 6 wk compared to other treatments with the exception of the Dext IC240 group. In Experiment 2, hatch weights were heavier (P < 0.05) in chicks receiving IC240 and DexIC480 treatments compared to Controls. At 6 wk, broilers in all treatments were heavier (P < 0.05) than Cont with the exception of IC480. In Experiment 3, hatch was stimulated by IC240 (in saline), but was delayed by Dext IC240. Serum analysis of ß-hydroxybutyrate (µM/mL), as an indicator of ketone accumulation from fat metabolism of chicks held in chick boxes for 24 h posthatch (to simulate delay in placement after hatch), indicated that chicks in the IC240 group (that hatched earlier) had higher blood ketones compared to chicks that received Dext or DextIC240 in ovo (that hatched later). We conclude dextrin and iodinated casein (240 µg/mL) provided in ovo (∼18.5 d of embryonic development) has the potential to improve chick quality and posthatch body weight by delaying or narrowing hatch window.

The effect of consumption of PolyGlycopleX(®) (PGX(®)) was compared to wheat dextrin (WD) in combination with a standard meal, on postprandial satiety and glycaemia in a double-blind, randomised crossover trial, of 14 healthy subjects trained as a satiety panel. At each of six two-hour satiety sessions, subjects consumed one of three different test meals on two separate occasions. The test meals were: a standard meal plus 5 g PGX; a standard meal plus 4.5 g of PGX as softgels; and a standard meal plus 5 g of WD. Subjects recorded fullness using a labelled magnitude scale at 0, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, and 120 min and the total area under the curve (AUC), mean fullness vs. time was calculated. The meals with PGX (in granular and softgel form) gave higher satiety (AUC) (477 ± 121 and 454 ± 242 cm·min), than the meal with WD (215 ± 261 cm·min) (p < 0.001). Subjects had blood glucose levels measured after the meals with PGX (granules) and WD. Glucose response (AUC) was significantly lower (p < 0.001) after the PGX meal than for the WD meal.  The high viscosity reported for PGX is a likely mechanism behind the significant satiety and blood glucose modulating effects observed in this study.

BACKGROUND: An increase in daily doses of protein and fiber for the elderly is relevant in preventing sarcopenia and preserving intestinal balance. However, such intake of supplements is often compromised by the lack of adherence among the elderly. OBJECTIVES: The main objective was to evaluate the perception of the hedonic qualities of compote enriched with NUTRALYS(®) pea protein, NUTRALYS(®)W hydrolyzed wheat gluten and NUTRIOSE(®) soluble fiber and the changes in that perception due to repeated consumption. The secondary objectives were to evaluate the evolution in the quantity of compote eaten, satisfaction with consumption and any changes in fatigue, digestive comfort and digestive tolerance when eating compote every other day for 3 weeks. METHOD: An observational study was conducted in nursing homes on volunteers aged 70-90 years. The compote was proposed as a lunchtime dessert every two days for a period of three consecutive weeks. All criteria were evaluated at days D0 and/or D1, D7, D15 and D21, except for the amount of compote eaten, evaluated after each meal at which it was served. RESULTS: When first tasted, the compote was judged 'rather pleasant' to 'very pleasant' by 91.6 % and this rating held up at 79.2 % (p = 0.1797) after 1 week, 83.3 % (p = 0.3173) after 2 weeks and 79.2 % (p = 0.2568) after 3 weeks. Average consumption of compote was stable and varied between a maximum of 79.5 % of the total quantity at inclusion to a minimum of 61.5 % recorded on D17. The other parameters did not change significantly. CONCLUSION: Pea protein, hydrolyzed wheat gluten and soluble fiber seem to provide an appropriate form of protein and fiber supplementation in the diets of elderly people in nursing homes.
