RESUMO

Ependymomas are neuroepithelial tumours arising from ependymal cells surrounding the cerebral ventricles that rarely metastasise to extraneural structures. This spread has been reported to occur to the lungs, lymph nodes, liver and bone. We describe the case of a patient with recurrent CNS WHO grade 3 ependymoma with extraneural metastatic disease. He was treated with multiple surgical resections, radiation therapy and salvage chemotherapy for his extraneural metastasis to the lungs, bone, pleural space and lymph nodes.

RESUMO

Central nervous system (CNS) tumors are the leading cause of pediatric cancer death, and these patients have an increased risk for developing secondary neoplasms. Due to the low prevalence of pediatric CNS tumors, major advances in targeted therapies have been lagging compared to other adult tumors. We collect single nuclei RNA-seq data from 84,700 nuclei of 35 pediatric CNS tumors and three non-tumoral pediatric brain tissues and characterize tumor heterogeneity and transcriptomic alterations. We distinguish cell subpopulations associated with specific tumor types including radial glial cells in ependymomas and oligodendrocyte precursor cells in astrocytomas. In tumors, we observe pathways important in neural stem cell-like populations, a cell type previously associated with therapy resistance. Lastly, we identify transcriptomic alterations among pediatric CNS tumor types compared to non-tumor tissues, while accounting for cell type effects on gene expression. Our results suggest potential tumor type and cell type-specific targets for pediatric CNS tumor treatment. Here we address current gaps in understanding single nuclei gene expression profiles of previously under-investigated tumor types and enhance current knowledge of gene expression profiles of single cells of various pediatric CNS tumors.

BACKGROUND: The role of adjuvant radiotherapy (RT) after gross total resection (GTR) of the World Health Organization (WHO) grade II ependymoma is controversial. Therefore, we aimed to compare the outcomes of adjuvant RT against observation after GTR of WHO grade II ependymoma. We also compared the outcomes of adjuvant RT against observation after subtotal resection (STR) of WHO grade II ependymoma and performed further subgroup analysis by age and tumor location. METHODS: PubMed and Embase were systematically reviewed for studies published up till 25 November 2022. Studies that reported individual-participant data on patients who underwent surgery followed by adjuvant RT/observation for WHO grade II ependymoma were included. The exposure was whether adjuvant RT was administered, and the outcomes were recurrence and overall survival (OS). Subgroup analyses were performed by the extent of resection (GTR or STR), tumor location (supratentorial or infratentorial), and age at the first surgery (<18 or ≥18 years old). RESULTS: Of the 4,647 studies screened, three studies reporting a total of 37 patients were included in the analysis. Of these 37 patients, 67.6% (25 patients) underwent GTR, and 51.4% (19 patients) underwent adjuvant RT. Adjuvant RT after GTR was not significantly associated with both recurrence (odds ratio =5.50; 95% confidence interval: 0.64-60.80; P=0.12) and OS (P=0.16). Adjuvant RT was also not significantly associated with both recurrence and OS when the cohort was analyzed as a whole and on subgroup analysis by age and tumor location. However, adjuvant RT was associated with significantly longer OS after STR (P=0.03) with the median OS being 6.33 years, as compared to 0.40 years for patients who underwent STR followed by observation. CONCLUSIONS: Based on our meta-analysis of 37 patients, administration of adjuvant RT after GTR was not significantly associated with improvement in OS or recurrence in patients with WHO grade II ependymoma. However, due to the small number of patients included in the analysis, further prospective controlled studies are warranted.

Ependymomas comprise biologically distinct tumor types with respect to age distribution, (epi)genetics, localization, and prognosis. Multimodal risk-stratification, including histopathological and molecular features, is essential in these biologically defined tumor types. Gross total resection (GTR), achieved with intraoperative monitoring and neuronavigation, and if necessary, second-look surgery, is the most effective treatment. Adjuvant radiation therapy is mandatory in high-risk tumors and in case of residual tumor. There is yet growing evidence that some ependymal tumors may be cured by surgery alone. To date, the role of chemotherapy is unclear and subject of current studies.Even though standard therapy can achieve reasonable survival rates for the majority of ependymoma patients, long-term follow-up still reveals a high probability of relapse in certain biological entities.With increasing knowledge of biologically distinct tumor types, risk-adapted adjuvant therapy gains importance. Beyond initial tumor control, and avoidance of therapy-induced morbidity for low-risk patients, intensified treatment for high-risk patients comprises another challenge. With identification of specific risk features regarding molecular alterations, targeted therapy may represent an option for individualized treatment modalities in the future.

INTRODUCTION: Cauda equina neuroendocrine tumors (CENETs), previously described as cauda equina paragangliomas (PGLs) are rare and well-vascularized benign entities which can be often misdiagnosed with other intradural tumors more common in this anatomical site, such as ependymomas and neurinomas. We describe three cases of CENETs observed at our institution with particular focus on differential diagnosis and postoperative management. Since the lack of guidelines, we performed a literature review to identify factors that can predict recurrence and influence postoperative decision making. CASE REPORT AND LITERATURE REVIEW: We report on three patients, two of them presenting with a clinical history of lower back pain and sciatica. In all cases magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lumbosacral spine with and without Gd-DTPA revealed an intradural lesion with strong contrast enhancement, first described as atypical ependymoma or schwannoma. A complete tumor resection was achieved in all cases, the histopathological diagnosis classified the tumors as CENETs. In our literature review, a total of 688 articles were screened and 162 patients were included. Patients demographic data, clinical symptoms, resection and recurrence were recorded. DISCUSSION: Differential diagnosis between CENETs and other more common tumors affecting cauda equina region, such as ependymomas or schwannomas (neurinomas), is still very challenging. Due to the lack of specific clinical or radiological characteristics, a correct preoperative diagnosis is almost impossible. With this paper we want to point out that CENETs must be considered in the differential diagnosis, most of all in case of entities with atypical radiological features. According to the literature, tumor recurrence after gross total resection is unlikely, while a long-term follow-up is recommended in case of subtotal resection or local aggressive behavior.

A novel methylation class, "neuroepithelial tumor, with PLAGL1 fusion" (NET-PLAGL1), has recently been described, based on epigenetic features, as a supratentorial pediatric brain tumor with recurrent histopathological features suggesting an ependymal differentiation. Because of the recent identification of this neoplastic entity, few histopathological, radiological and clinical data are available. Herein, we present a detailed series of nine cases of PLAGL1-fused supratentorial tumors, reclassified from a series of supratentorial ependymomas, non-ZFTA/non-YAP1 fusion-positive and subependymomas of the young. This study included extensive clinical, radiological, histopathological, ultrastructural, immunohistochemical, genetic and epigenetic (DNA methylation profiling) data for characterization. An important aim of this work was to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of a novel fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) targeting the PLAGL1 gene. Using histopathology, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy, we confirmed the ependymal differentiation of this new neoplastic entity. Indeed, the cases histopathologically presented as "mixed subependymomas-ependymomas" with well-circumscribed tumors exhibiting a diffuse immunoreactivity for GFAP, without expression of Olig2 or SOX10. Ultrastructurally, they also harbored features reminiscent of ependymal differentiation, such as cilia. Different gene partners were fused with PLAGL1: FOXO1, EWSR1 and for the first time MAML2. The PLAGL1 FISH presented a 100% sensitivity and specificity according to RNA sequencing and DNA methylation profiling results. This cohort of supratentorial PLAGL1-fused tumors highlights: 1/ the ependymal cell origin of this new neoplastic entity; 2/ benefit of looking for a PLAGL1 fusion in supratentorial cases of non-ZFTA/non-YAP1 ependymomas; and 3/ the usefulness of PLAGL1 FISH.

PURPOSE: Primary treatment of spinal ependymomas involves surgical resection, however recurrence ranges between 50 and 70%. While the association of survival outcomes with lesion extent of resection (EOR) has been studied, existing analyses are limited by small samples and archaic data resulting in an inhomogeneous population. We investigated the relationship between EOR and survival outcomes, chiefly overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS), in a large contemporary cohort of spinal ependymoma patients. METHODS: Adult patients diagnosed with a spinal ependymoma from 2006 to 2021 were identified from an institutional registry. Patients undergoing primary surgical resection at our institution, ≥ 1 routine follow-up MRI, and pathologic diagnosis of ependymoma were included. Records were reviewed for demographic information, EOR, lesion characteristics, and pre-/post-operative neurologic symptoms. EOR was divided into 2 classifications: gross total resection (GTR) and subtotal resection (STR). Log-rank test was used to compare OS and PFS between patient groups. RESULTS: Sixty-nine patients satisfied inclusion criteria, with 79.7% benefitting from GTR. The population was 56.2% male with average age of 45.7 years, and median follow-up duration of 58 months. Cox multivariate model demonstrated significant improvement in PFS when a GTR was attained (p <.001). Independently ambulatory patients prior to surgery had superior PFS (p <.001) and OS (p =.05). In univariate analyses, patients with a syrinx had improved PFS (p =.03) and were more likely to benefit from GTR (p =.01). Alternatively, OS was not affected by EOR (p =.78). CONCLUSIONS: In this large, contemporary series of adult spinal ependymoma patients, we demonstrated improvements in PFS when GTR was achieved.

PURPOSE: Preoperative diagnosis of filum terminale ependymomas (FTEs) versus schwannomas is difficult but essential for surgical planning and prognostic assessment. With the advancement of deep-learning approaches based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs), the aim of this study was to determine whether CNN-based interpretation of magnetic resonance (MR) images of these two tumours could be achieved. METHODS: Contrast-enhanced MRI data from 50 patients with primary FTE and 50 schwannomas in the lumbosacral spinal canal were retrospectively collected and used as training and internal validation datasets. The diagnostic accuracy of MRI was determined by consistency with postoperative histopathological examination. T1-weighted (T1-WI), T2-weighted (T2-WI) and contrast-enhanced T1-weighted (CE-T1) MR images of the sagittal plane containing the tumour mass were selected for analysis. For each sequence, patient MRI data were randomly allocated to 5 groups that further underwent fivefold cross-validation to evaluate the diagnostic efficacy of the CNN models. An additional 34 pairs of cases were used as an external test dataset to validate the CNN classifiers. RESULTS: After comparing multiple backbone CNN models, we developed a diagnostic system using Inception-v3. In the external test dataset, the per-examination combined sensitivities were 0.78 (0.71-0.84, 95% CI) based on T1-weighted images, 0.79 (0.72-0.84, 95% CI) for T2-weighted images, 0.88 (0.83-0.92, 95% CI) for CE-T1 images, and 0.88 (0.83-0.92, 95% CI) for all weighted images. The combined specificities were 0.72 based on T1-WI (0.66-0.78, 95% CI), 0.84 (0.78-0.89, 95% CI) based on T2-WI, 0.74 (0.67-0.80, 95% CI) for CE-T1, and 0.81 (0.76-0.86, 95% CI) for all weighted images. After all three MRI modalities were merged, the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was calculated, and the area under the curve (AUC) was 0.93, with an accuracy of 0.87. CONCLUSIONS: CNN based MRI analysis has the potential to accurately differentiate ependymomas from schwannomas in the lumbar segment.

BACKGROUND: Ependymomas (EPNs) of the spinal region are a heterogeneous group of tumors that account for 17.6 % in adults. Four types have been recognized: subependymoma, spinal ependymoma (Sp-EPN), myxopapillary ependymoma (MPE), and Sp-EPN-MYCN amplified, each with distinct histopathological and molecular features. METHODS: This study investigated the clinical and pathological characteristics and MYCN expression levels of 35 Sp-EPN and MPE cases diagnosed at a tertiary university hospital over a decade-long period. RESULTS: Twenty-five cases were Sp-EPN and 10 cases were MPE, and were graded as WHO grade 2, except for 1 Sp-EPN case with grade 3 features. The most common symptoms were lower back pain and difficulty in walking. Radiology showed different tumor sizes and locations along the spinal cord, with MPEs exclusively in the lumbosacral region. Surgery was the main treatment, and gross total resection was achieved in all cases except for one. Immunohistochemistry showed low Ki-67 proliferation indices in all cases, and no MYCN expression. During follow-up, 3 (8.6 %) cases recurred and/or metastasized and 5 cases (14.3 %) died. No significant difference was found in disease-free survival or overall survival between Sp-EPN and MPE cases. However, 3 cases with grade 2 histology demonstrated recurrence and/or metastasis, despite the lack of MYCN expression. CONCLUSION: Our results underscore the multifactorial nature of tumor aggressiveness in EPNs of the spinal region. This study enhances our knowledge of the clinical and pathological features of Sp-EPNs and MPEs and highlights the need for better diagnostic and prognostic markers in these rare tumors.

Surveillance magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is routinely used to detect recurrence in pediatric central nervous system (CNS) tumors. The frequency of neuroimaging surveillance varies without a standardized approach. A single-institutional retrospective cohort study evaluated the frequency of recurrences. This study included 476 patients with the majority diagnosed with low-grade glioma (LGG) (n=138, 29%), high-grade glioma (HGG) (n=77, 16%), ependymoma (n=70, 15%), or medulloblastoma (n=61, 13%). LGG, HGG, and ependymoma patients more commonly had multiply recurrent disease ( P =0.08), with ependymoma patients demonstrating ≥2 relapses in 47% of cases. Recurrent disease was identified by imaging more often than clinical symptoms (65% vs. 32%; P =<0.01). Patients diagnosed with meningioma demonstrated the longest mean time to first relapse (74.7 mo) whereas those with atypical teratoid rhabdoid tumor and choroid plexus carcinoma tended to have the shortest time to relapse (8.9 and 9 mo, respectively). Overall, 22 patients sustained first relapse >10 years from initial diagnosis. With a higher tendency toward detection of tumor recurrence/progression on MRI surveillance in comparison to clinical progression, surveillance imaging is necessary in routine follow up of pediatric CNS tumor survivors. With some relapses >10 years from initial diagnosis, imaging beyond this time point may be useful in particular tumor types. While the study is limited in outcome analysis, earlier detection of recurrence would lead to earlier initiation of treatment and implementation of salvage treatment regimens which can impact survival and quality of life.

Ependymomas account for 1-8% of overall brain tumors. They are most common at the age of 3-4 years. Their metastasis is very rare, and extraneural metastasis is even more unusual. In this report, the ependymoma localized in the posterior fossa with metastasis into femoral diaphysis in a 27-year-old male patient, who was treated in 2001, is presented. As we did not have any other cases of patients having a brain and spinal tumor with extraneural metastases even after 21 years, until 2022, this case was found worthy of being presented. When the literature was examined, it was observed that there is still no standard treatment after surgery for ependymomas and their metastasis. Due to their rarity, the general treatment of extraneural metastasis of ependymomas is also under discussion. It is recommended that clinicians consider admitting patients with rare or hard-to-treat tumors to ongoing clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Ependymoma is a central nervous system (CNS) tumor that arises from the ependymal cells of the brain's ventricles and spinal cord. The histopathology of ependymomas is indistinguishable regardless of the site of origin, and the prognosis varies. Recent studies have revealed that the development site and prognosis reflect the genetic background. In this study, we used genome-wide DNA methylation array analysis to investigate the epigenetic background of ependymomas from different locations treated at our hospital. METHODS: Four cases of posterior fossa ependymomas and 11 cases of spinal ependymomas were analyzed. RESULTS: DNA methylation profiling using the DKFZ methylation classifier showed that the methylation diagnoses of the 2 cases differed from the histopathological diagnoses, and 2 cases could not be classified. Tumor that spread from the brain to the spinal cord was molecularly distinguishable from other primary spinal tumors. CONCLUSIONS: Although adding DNA methylation classification to conventional diagnostic methods may be helpful, the diagnosis in some cases remains undetermined. This may affect decision-making regarding treatment strategies and follow-up. Further investigations are required to improve the diagnostic accuracy of these tumors.

PURPOSE: There are no effective treatment strategies for children with highest-risk posterior fossa group A ependymoma (PFA). Chromosome 1q gains (1q+) are present in approximately 25% of newly diagnosed PFA tumors, and this number doubles at recurrence. Seventy percent of children with chromosome 1q+ PFA will die because of the tumor, highlighting the urgent need to develop new therapeutic strategies for this population. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: In this study, we utilize 1q+ PFA in vitro and in vivo models to test the efficacy of combination radiation and chemotherapy in a preclinical setting. RESULTS: 5-fluorouracil (5FU) enhances radiotherapy in 1q+ PFA cell lines. Specifically, 5FU increases p53 activity mediated by the extra copy of UCK2 located on chromosome 1q in 1q+ PFA. Experimental downregulation of UCK2 resulted in decreased 5FU sensitivity in 1q+ PFA cells. In in vitro studies, a combination of 5FU, retinoid tretinoin (ATRA), and radiation provided the greatest reduction in cellular proliferation and greatest increase in markers of apoptosis in 1q+ PFA cell lines compared with other treatment arms. Similarly, in vivo experiments demonstrated significant enhancement of survival in mice treated with combination radiation and 5FU and ATRA. CONCLUSIONS: These results are the first to identify a chromosome 1q+ specific therapy approach in 1q+ PFA. Existing phase I studies have already established single-agent pediatric safety and dosages of 5FU and ATRA, allowing for expedited clinical application as phase II trials for children with high-risk PFA.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Ependymoma is the third most frequent childhood braintumor. Standard treatment is surgery followed by radiation therapy including proton therapy (PBT). Retrospective studies have reported higher rates of brainstem injury after PBT than after photon therapy (XRT). We report a national multicenter study of the incidence of brainstem injury after XRT versus PBT, and their correlations with dosimetric data. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We included all patients aged < 25 years who were treated with PBT or XRT for intracranial ependymoma at five French pediatric oncology reference centers between 2007 and 2020. We reviewed pre-irradiation MRI, follow-up MRIs over the 12 months post-treatment and clinical data. RESULTS: Of the 83 patients, 42 were treated with PBT, 37 with XRT, and 4 with both (median dose: 59.4 Gy, range: 53­60). No new or progressive symptomatic brainstem injury was found. Four patients presented asymptomatic radiographic changes (punctiform brainstem enhancement and FLAIR hypersignal), with median onset at 3.5 months (range: 3.0­9.4) after radiation therapy, and median offset at 7.6 months (range: 3.7­7.9). Two had been treated with PBT, one with XRT, and one with mixed XRT-PBT. Prescribed doses were 59.4, 55.8, 59.4 and 54 Gy. CONCLUSION: Asymptomatic radiographic changes occurred in 4.8% of patients with ependymoma in a large national series. There was no correlation with dose or technique. No symptomatic brainstem injury was identified.

MYCN (master regulator of cell cycle entry and proliferative metabolism) gene amplification defines a molecular subgroup of spinal cord ependymomas that show high-grade morphology and aggressive behavior. Demonstration of MYCN amplification by DNA methylation or fluorescence-in situ hybridization (FISH) is required for diagnosis. We aimed to (i) assess prevalence and clinicopathological features of MYCN-amplified spinal ependymomas and (ii) evaluate utility of immunohistochemistry (IHC) for MYCN protein as a surrogate for molecular testing. A combined retrospective-prospective study spanning 8 years was designed during which all spinal cord ependymomas with adequate tissue were subjected to MYCN FISH and MYCN IHC. Among 77 spinal cord ependymomas included, MYCN amplification was identified in 4 samples from 3 patients (3/74, 4%) including two (1st and 2nd recurrences) from the same patient. All patients were adults (median age at diagnosis of 32 years) including two females and one male. The index tumors were located in thoracic (n = 2) and lumbar (n = 1) spinal cord. One of the female patients had neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2). All four tumors showed anaplastic histology. Diffuse expression of MYCN protein was seen in all four MYCN-amplified samples but in none of the non-amplified cases, thus showing 100% concordance with FISH results. On follow-up, the NF2 patient developed widespread spinal dissemination while another developed recurrence proximal to the site of previous excision. To conclude, MYCN-amplified spinal ependymomas are rare tumors, accounting for ~ 4% of spinal cord ependymomas. Within the limitation of small sample size, MYCN IHC showed excellent concordance with MYCN gene amplification.

BACKGROUND: Anaplastic ependymoma and H3K27M-mutant diffuse midline glioma are two common subtypes of brain tumors with poor long-term prognosis. The present study analyzed and compared the differences in cell types between two tumors by single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) technology. METHODS: ScRNA-seq was performed to profile cells from cancer tissue from anaplastic ependymoma patient and H3K27M-mutant diffuse midline glioma patient. Cell clustering, marker gene identification, cell type annotation, copy number variation analysis and function analysis of differentially expressed genes were then performed. RESULTS: A total of 11,219 cells were obtained from anaplastic ependymoma and H3K27M mutant diffuse midline glioma, and these cells categorized into 12 distinct clusters. Each cell cluster could be characterized with specific cell markers to indicate cellular heterogeneity. Five cell types were annotated in each sample, including astrocyte, oligodendrocytes, microglial cell, neural progenitor cell and immune cell. The cluster types and proportion of cell types were not consistent between the two brain tumors. Functional analyses suggest that these cell clusters are involved in tumor-associated pathways, with slight differences in the cells of origin between the two tumors. In addition, cell communication analysis showed that the NRG3-ERBB4 pair is a key Ligand-receptor pair for anaplastic ependymoma, while in H3K27M-mutant diffuse midline glioma it is the PTN-PTPRZ1 pair that establishes contact with other cells. CONCLUSION: There was intratumor heterogeneity in anaplastic ependymoma and H3K27M mutant diffuse midline glioma, and that the subtype differences may be due to differences in the origin of the cells.

PURPOSE: To investigate the value of histogram analysis of postcontrast T1-weighted (T1C) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) images in predicting the grade and proliferative activity of adult intracranial ependymomas. METHODS: Forty-seven adult intracranial ependymomas were enrolled and underwent histogram parameters extraction (including minimum, maximum, mean, 1st percentile (Perc.01), Perc.05, Perc.10, Perc.25, Perc.50, Perc.75, Perc.90, Perc.95, Perc.99, standard deviation (SD), variance, coefficient of variation (CV), skewness, kurtosis, and entropy of T1C and ADC) using FireVoxel software. Differences in histogram parameters between grade 2 and grade 3 adult intracranial ependymomas were compared. Receiver operating characteristic curves and logistic regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the diagnostic performance. Spearman's correlation analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between histogram parameters and Ki-67 proliferation index. RESULTS: Grade 3 intracranial ependymomas group showed significantly higher Perc.95, Perc.99, SD, variance, CV, and entropy of T1C; lower minimum, mean, Perc.01, Perc.05, Perc.10, Perc.25, Perc.50 of ADC; and higher CV and entropy of ADC than grade 2 intracranial ependymomas group (all p < 0.05). Entropy (T1C) and Perc.10 (ADC) had a higher diagnostic performance with AUCs of 0.805 and 0.827 among the histogram parameters of T1C and ADC, respectively. The diagnostic performance was improved by combining entropy (T1C) and Perc.10 (ADC), with an AUC of 0.857. Significant correlations were observed between significant histogram parameters of T1C (r = 0.296-0.417, p = 0.001-0.044) and ADC (r = -0.428-0.395, p = 0.003-0.038). CONCLUSION: Whole-tumor histogram analysis of T1C and ADC may be a promising approach for predicting the grade and proliferative activity of adult intracranial ependymomas.

BACKGROUND: Ependymomas are the third most common central nervous system tumor in the pediatric population; however, spinal ependymomas in children are rare. Ependymomas affecting the spinal cord most frequently occur in adults of 20-40 years of age. The current World Health Organization classification system for ependymomas is now composed of ten different entities based on histopathology, location, and molecular studies, with evidence that the new classification system more accurately predicts clinical outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a 16-year-old Caucasian female patient with a history of type 2 neurofibromatosis with multiple schwannomas, meningioma, and spinal ependymoma. Chromosome analysis of the harvested spinal ependymoma tumor sample revealed a 46,XX,-6,+7,-22,+mar[16]/46,XX[4] karyotype. Subsequent OncoScan microarray analysis of the formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tumor sample confirmed + 7, -22 and clarified that the marker chromosome represents chromothripsis of the entire chromosome 6 with more than 100 breakpoints. Fluorescent in situ hybridization and microarray analysis showed no evidence of MYCN amplification. The final integrated pathology diagnosis was spinal ependymoma (central nervous system World Health Organization grade 2 with no MYCN amplification. CONCLUSION: This case adds to the existing literature of pediatric patients with spinal ependymomas and expands the cytogenetic findings that may be seen in patients with this tumor type. This case also highlights the value of cytogenetics and microarray analysis in solid tumors to provide a more accurate molecular diagnosis.
