RESUMO

This experiment aimed to study the effect of 1% Artemisia annua added to the diet on growth performance, antioxidant capacity, immunity and intestinal morphology, and gut microbiota of geese. Seventy-two 35-day-old male geese (Zi goose) with similar body weight were selected and randomly divided into 2 groups. Each treatment group of 36 geese was divided into 6 subgroups, each having 6 male geese. The experiment lasted for 21 d. Control group (CON) was fed a basal diet and the experimental group (AAL) was fed a basal diet + 1% Artemisia annua. BW, ADG, and ADFI of the AAL group increased (p < 0.05) and the FCR decreased (p < 0.05) compared with the CON group. The addition of Artemisia annua to the diet increased catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) enzyme activities, increased total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), and decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) content in serum and jejunum of geese (p < 0.05). Meanwhile, serum IgA, IgG, IgM, and lysozyme (LZM), increased at different time points in the AAL group compared to the CON group (p < 0.05), and decrease in the content of interferon-γ (IFN-γ) , IL-6 (p < 0.05), but no effect on complement C3 and C4. Morphological observation of the small intestine showed that the jejunal crypt depth was decreased in the AAL group (p < 0.05) while elevating the jejunal villus height/crypt depth (p < 0.05). 16S rRNA sequencing results showed the Artemisia annua increased the diversity of cecum microbiota, increasing the relative abundance of Bacteroides, Fecalibacterium, and Paraprevotella. In conclusion, the addition of 1% Artemisia annua to the diet could improve the growth performance, antioxidant and immune ability of geese, as well as improve the development of the jejunum intestinal tract of geese, and change the structure of the cecum microbiota, which had a positive effect on the growth and development of geese. Artemisia annua can be further developed as a feed additive.

A floor egg is an egg that is not laid in the nest, which is a prevalent issue in many fowl breeder farms, lowering egg collection efficiency, hatching performance, and economic benefits. Although the pattern and influencing factors of floor laying have been extensively reported in chickens and ducks, it is not clear in geese. Herein, the Yangzhou goose breeders were selected, and the time and location preferences, genetic and environmental influences, and physiological indexes in floor laying were investigated. The results revealed distinct time and location preferences existed. More floor eggs were laid from 2:00 to 5:00 and 8:00 to 12:00 am, with a concentration observed in the feed trough. Moreover, the proportion of floor eggs was higher at the early stage than at other stages of the laying cycle, and the fast-growing line laid more floor eggs than dual-purpose and high-yielding lines (P < 0.05). In addition to genetic factors, the effect of environmental influences on floor eggs was also surveyed. More floor eggs were observed in the family housing system than in large-group and small-population housing systems, and geese who reared in north-facing houses laid more floor eggs than in south-facing houses (P < 0.05). Physiological indexes were compared between floor-laying and nest-laying geese. Significantly decreased serum progesterone and prolactin levels were detected, alongside down-regulated gene expressions of progesterone receptor in ovaries, oxytocin receptor in both pituitary and ovaries, corticotropin-releasing hormone in ovaries, and dopamine receptor D2 in hypothalamus and ovaries in floor-laying geese compared to nest-laying geese (P < 0.05). In addition, a practical and inexpensive approach of adding a single decoy egg to the nest box effectively reduced the proportion of floor eggs (P < 0.05). Taken together, these data provide scientific information for patterns, genetic and environmental influences, and physiological indexes of floor eggs, thereby contributing to effective control of floor laying in goose breeders' production.

The quality (color, tenderness, juiciness, protein content, and fat content) of poultry meat is closely linked to age, with older birds typically exhibiting increased intramuscular fat (IMF) deposition. However, specific lipid metabolic pathways involved in IMF deposition remain unknown. To elucidate the mechanisms underlying lipid changes, we conducted a study using meat geese at 2 distinct growth stages (70 and 300 d). Our findings regarding the approximate composition of the meat revealed that as the geese aged 300 d, their meat acquired a chewier texture and displayed higher levels of IMF. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) was employed for lipid profiling of the IMF. Using a lipid database, we identified 849 lipids in the pectoralis muscle of geese. Principal component analysis and orthogonal partial least squares discriminant analysis were used to distinguish between the 2 age groups and identify differential lipid metabolites. As expected, we observed significant changes in 107 lipids, including triglycerides, diglycerides, phosphatidylethanolamine, alkyl-glycerophosphoethanolamine, alkenyl-glycerophosphoethanolamine, phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol, lysophosphatidylserine, ceramide-AP, ceramide-AS, free fatty acids, cholesterol lipids, and N-acyl-lysophosphatidylethanolamine. Among these, the glyceride molecules exhibited the most pronounced changes and played a pivotal role in IMF deposition. Additionally, increased concentration of phospholipid molecules was observed in breast muscle at 70 d. Unsaturated fatty acids attached to lipid side chain sites enrich the nutritional value of goose meat. Notably, C16:0 and C18:0 were particularly abundant in the 70-day-old goose meat. Pathway analysis demonstrated that glycerophospholipid and glyceride metabolism were the pathways most significantly associated with lipid changes during goose growth, underscoring their crucial role in lipid metabolism in goose meat. In conclusion, this work provides an up-to-date study on the lipid composition and metabolic pathways of goose meat and may provide a theoretical basis for elucidating the nutritional value of goose meat at different growth stages.

In poultries, muscle growth is a quantitative trait controlled by multiple genes. The regulatory mechanisms governing muscle tissue growth and development in poultry, particularly during the early stages of growth, are intricate. Through the examination of leg muscle transcripts from Yili geese during various stages of development, this study offers valuable insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying the growth and development of Yili geese. This study aimed to perform a comparative analysis of the histological characteristics of leg muscles and the mRNA expression profiles of leg muscles in Yili geese at different ages (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 wk). The objective was to identify differentially expressed genes related to muscle development in Yili geese and utilize bioinformatics to predict the potential biological functions of these genes. Through histological studies on leg muscle tissues, it was discerned that male geese at 4 wk exhibit a significantly reduced muscle fiber density in comparison to females (P < 0.01). In contrast, by the time they reach 6, 8, and 10 wk, their muscle fiber diameter and cross-sectional dimensions significantly outpace the females (P < 0.01). With the advancement in age, muscle fiber density tends to decrease. It is worth noting that 4- and 6-wk-old male geese have a substantially elevated muscle fiber density when matched against females (P < 0.01). Conversely, at the age of 10 wk, their muscle fiber density is notably inferior to the females (P < 0.01). Furthermore, male geese exhibit the most rapid increase in muscle fiber diameter and cross-sectional area between 4 and 6 wk of age. The density of muscle fibers in these geese significantly decreases from 4 to 8 wk. In contrast, female geese show the most pronounced growth in muscle fiber diameter and cross-sectional area between 2 and 6 wk, with a swift decline in density following the 6-wk mark, accompanied by a gradual reduction in the rate of muscle fiber growth. A comprehensive analysis of the leg muscle mRNA expression profiles from 12 Yili geese generated a cumulative total of 502,065,268 valid sequence reads, corresponding to a data volume of 75.30 Gb. In a comparative analysis between 4-wk-old and 2-wk-old groups (T4 vs. T2), 8-wk-old and 2-wk-old groups (T8 vs. T2), and 8-wk-old and 4-wk-old groups (T8 vs. T4), we identified 1,700, 1,583, and 221 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), respectively. Differentially expressed genes were significantly enriched in Gene Ontology (GO) terms such as organelle organization, cytoskeletal protein binding, cation transport, myosin complex, and actin cytoskeleton. Among the significantly enriched signaling pathways, 5 pathways were found to be significantly related to growth and development: adhesion patch, extracellular matrix receptor interaction, tight junction, TGF-ß signaling pathway, and MAPK signaling pathway, with a total of 38 differentially differentiated genes contained in these 5 pathways, and it was hypothesized that the above pathways as well as the DEGs in the pathways played an important role in the regulation of early growth and development of the Yili goose. This investigation serves as a foundational reference for elucidating the molecular regulatory mechanisms involved in the development of goose muscle. Furthermore, it contributes to the expansion of the theoretical framework concerning the genetic regulation of muscle growth in geese.

The East China region is the main market for the breeding and consumption of meat geese in China, in order to provide data reference for small and medium-sized farms and farmers to choose breeding methods and growth performance. This study selected 300 Yangzhou geese as materials and determined the number of geese in each group according to different modes. The meat quality, blood biochemical indicators, and economic benefits of 4 common feeding methods (Group I: full concentrate feeding; Group II: concentrate feeding in the first stage + 3% fat addition in the later stage; Group III: concentrate feeding + pasture supplementation; Group IV: grazing feeding + concentrate) in East China were analyzed. The results are as follows: The average daily weight gain of Yangzhou geese in Group IV at 5 to 8 wk old was the highest, with the highest feed utilization rate. The body weight at 8 wk old was significantly higher than that of the group III (P < 0.05). The total mortality rate of Group I and II remained at a relatively low level, while the mortality rates of Group III and IV exceeded 17%. The SR, FECR, and FECW of female geese in Groups II, III, and IV were significantly higher than those in Control group I (P < 0.05). Different feeding methods have little effect on the quality of goose breast muscles, while in terms of leg muscles, Group II has the highest binding force, significantly higher than Group I (P < 0.05). The rate of chest muscle loss in group III was significantly higher than that in groups I and II (P < 0.05). However, the pH of leg muscles in groups I, II and III was significantly higher than that in group IV (P < 0.05). Group II has the highest protein and collagen content, and Group I has the highest fat content. Except for the significantly higher histidine content in Groups I And II compared to those in Groups III and IV (P < 0.05), there was almost no significant difference in amino acid content among the groups (P > 0.05). There was no significant difference in ALB/GLO content among the 3 groups of Groups II to IV, but they were all significantly higher than those of Group I (P < 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in other indicators among the groups (P > 0.05). There was no significant difference in the content of Ca, Cu, Fe, P, Zn, and other elements in the muscles between the groups (P > 0.05). This study solved the problems of slow growth, poor meat performance, and low economic benefits in meat goose breeding, providing theoretical basis and data support for meat goose breeding enterprises and farmers to choose appropriate breeding modes.

Collisions between birds and aircraft cause bird mortality, economic damage, and aviation safety hazards. One proposed solution to increasing the distance at which birds detect and move away from an approaching aircraft, ultimately mitigating the probability of collision, is through onboard lighting systems. Lights in vehicles have been shown to lead to earlier reactions in some bird species but they could also generate attraction, potentially increasing the probability of collision. Using information on the visual system of the Canada goose (Branta canadensis), we developed light stimuli of high chromatic contrast to their eyes. We then conducted a controlled behavioral experiment (i.e., single-choice test) to assess the avoidance or attraction responses of Canada geese to LED lights of different wavelengths (blue, 483 nm; red, 631 nm) and pulsing frequencies (steady, pulsing at 2 Hz). Overall, Canada geese tended to avoid the blue light and move towards the red light; however, these responses depended heavily on light exposure order. At the beginning of the experiment, geese tended to avoid the red light. After further exposure the birds developed an attraction to the red light, consistent with the mere exposure effect. The response to the blue light generally followed a U-shape relationship (avoidance, attraction, avoidance) with increasing number of exposures, again consistent with the mere exposure effect, but followed by the satiation effect. Lights pulsing at 2 Hz enhanced avoidance responses under high ambient light conditions; whereas steady lights enhanced avoidance responses under dim ambient light conditions. Our results have implications for the design of lighting systems aimed at mitigating collisions between birds and human objects. LED lights in the blue portion of the spectrum are good candidates for deterrents and lights in the red portion of the spectrum may be counterproductive given the attraction effects with increasing exposure. Additionally, consideration should be given to systems that automatically modify pulsing of the light depending on ambient light intensity to enhance avoidance.

Indirect interactions are widespread among prey species that share a common predator, but the underlying mechanisms driving these interactions are often unclear, and our ability to predict their outcome is limited. Changes in behavioural traits that impact predator space use could be a key proximal mechanism mediating indirect interactions, but there is little empirical evidence of the causes and consequences of such behavioural-numerical response in multispecies systems. Here, we investigate the complex ecological relationships between seven prey species sharing a common predator. We used a path analysis approach on a comprehensive 9-year data set simultaneously tracking predator space use, prey densities and prey mortality rate on key species of a simplified Arctic food web. We show that high availability of a clumped and spatially predictable prey (goose eggs) leads to a twofold reduction in predator (arctic fox) home range size, which increases local predator density and strongly decreases nest survival of an incidental prey (American golden plover). On the contrary, a scattered cyclic prey with potentially lower spatial predictability (lemming) had a weaker effect on fox space use and an overall positive impact on the survival of incidental prey. These contrasting effects underline the importance of studying behavioural responses of predators in multiprey systems and to explicitly integrate behavioural-numerical responses in multispecies predator-prey models.

The strength of indirect biotic interactions is difficult to quantify in the wild and can alter community composition. To investigate whether the presence of a prey species affects the population growth rate of another prey species, we quantified predator-mediated interaction strength using a multi-prey mechanistic model of predation and a population matrix model. Models were parametrized using behavioural, demographic and experimental data from a vertebrate community that includes the arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus), a predator feeding on lemmings and eggs of various species such as sandpipers and geese. We show that the positive effects of the goose colony on sandpiper nesting success (due to reduction of search time for sandpiper nests) were outweighed by the negative effect of an increase in fox density. The fox numerical response was driven by changes in home range size. As a result, the net interaction from the presence of geese was negative and could lead to local exclusion of sandpipers. Our study provides a rare empirically based model that integrates mechanistic multi-species functional responses and behavioural processes underlying the predator numerical response. This is an important step forward in our ability to quantify the consequences of predation for community structure and dynamics.

The objective of this study was to investigate the changes in the functional properties (pH, water holding capacity [WHC], water binding capacity [WBC], cooking losses [CL], defrosting losses [DL]), color parameters (L*, a*, b*, C, h°, ΔE), and sensory evaluation of breast (BM) and leg (LM) muscles from 17-wk-old female White Koluda geese packaged in a vacuum and stored in frozen conditions at -20°C. During 17 wk, the geese were fed ad libitum on the same complete feed. The samples (18 BM and 18 LM) from the right part of the carcasses were stored for 30, 90, 80, 270, and 365 d. The changes in functional properties were established using a standard method used in the meat industry, according to Wierbicki et al. (1962), Grau and Hamm (1953), and CIE, (1986). Sensory evaluation was established according to defined parameters in PN-ISO 8586-2:2008. The time of frozen storage affected the decrease in WHC and WBC of BM and LM. Moreover, the LM can be characterized by a higher WHC and WBC compared to the values in the BM. It was established that CL and DL, which are the critical quality indicators, negatively increased in BM and LM during frozen storage. Considering the sensory evaluation and L*, a*, b*, C, it was established that changes in BM and LM during frozen storage were unfavorable. The scores given for smell, taste, consistency, and general appearance, as also L*, a*, and b* parameters decreased significantly during frozen storage. In addition, BM received lower scores for general appearance (at 180th and 270th day), and L* (in all frozen storage), than LM. BM and LM characterized the parameter ΔE in the range of 0.44 to 1.45, which allowed us to conclude that slight color differences were visible in these muscles (<2). Based on the study, it can be suggested that the optimal frozen storage time for BM and LM should not be longer than 180 d.

Dietary metabolizable energy (ME) level could offer a well production performance through maintaining lipid homeostasis in poultry. In this study, a total of 540 geese (450 females and 90 males) at 64 wk of age with similar body weight (4,600 ± 382) were randomly divided into 5 groups with 3 replicates in each group and 30 females and 6 males (1♂:5♀) in each replicate. After 2 wk adaptation, the 5 groups were designed to provide diet with ME intakes of 9.65, 10.05, 10.70, 11.45, and 11.75 MJ/kg, respectively, according to production requirement. Body weight, egg production, hatchability, blood lipid, and fat deposition were recorded after 6 wk feeding. The expression of lipid synthesis-related genes, lipoprotein lipase (LPL) and fatty acid synthase (FASN), were determined by quantitative real-time PCR. Geese fed with high ME diet of 11.75 MJ/kg caused an increased liver and abdominal fat weight and low hatchability of set eggs. The ovarian weight and oviduct length were higher in geese fed dietary energy of 10.7 MJ/kg as compared to the 9.65 MJ/kg groups, whereas no significant difference was observed in geese fed dietary energy of 10.05 MJ/kg. Dietary energy level did not change the concentration of serum lipids at the late egg laying stage. The LPL expression exhibited linear and quadratic effect in response to dietary ME. The FASN expression showed quadratic effect and a relatively higher expression was exhibited in 10.05 and 11.45 MJ/kg than that of the 9.65 and 10.70 MJ/kg ME groups. According to the productivity, reproductive performance, and fat deposition, dietary ME of 10.13 to 10.28 MJ/kg could be suggested for breeding geese at their late laying stage.

1. The Forkhead box O3 (FOXO3) transcription factor is a crucial regulator in controlling cell metabolism, proliferation, apoptosis, migration and response to oxidative stress. However, FOXO3 has not previously been studied much in the embryonic skin follicles of geese.2. This study used Zhedong white geese (Anser cygnoides), Jilin white geese (Anser cygnoides) and Hungarian white geese (Anser anser). The feather follicle structure in the dorsal skin during embryonic stages was examined with haematoxylin and eosin (HE) and Pollak staining. The FOXO3 protein content in the embryonic dorsal skin from feather follicles was detected using western blotting and quantitative real-time PCR.3. The mRNA expression level of FOXO3 in the dorsal skin of Jilin white geese was highly expressed on embryonic day 23 (E23; P < 0.01), while mRNA expression of FOXO3 was highly expressed in the feather follicle of Hungarian white geese at E28 (P < 0.01). The expression of FOXO3 protein mainly concentrated in the early embryonic phase among these goose breeds (P < 0.05). This suggested that FOXO3 plays a crucial role in the development and growth of embryonic dorsal skin of feather follicles. The location of the FOXO3 protein was determined using the IHC technique, which further verified the effect of FOXO3 in the dorsal skin for feather follicles during embryogenesis.4. The study demonstrated the differential expression and localisation of the FOXO3 gene among different goose species. It was speculated that the gene could potentially improve goose feather follicle development and feather-related traits and provide a basis for further understanding of FOXO3 function in the dorsal tissue of goose embryos.

Here, we examined the effects of crossbreeding and sex on growth performance, slaughter performance, and meat quality in Xingguo gray (XG) goose, using transcriptomic and metabolomic techniques. The experiment was conducted using 400 goslings (1-day old) of 2 genotypes: the XG breed and its ternary hybrids [F2 geese; (XG Goose♂ × Yangzhou Goose♀)♀ × Shitou Goose♂]. The goslings were divided into 4 groups: female XG, male XG, female F2 geese, and male F2 geese, and growth parameters were examined at 70 d of age, using 30 birds from each group. Following slaughter, samples of breast and thigh muscles were collected from each group for chemical, metabolome, and transcriptome analyses. Growth rate, live body and slaughter weights, meat chemical composition, and muscle fiber diameter were affected by crossbreeding and sex. Crossbreeding significantly improved the dressing percentage, semieviscerated rate, eviscerated yield, and abdominal fat yield of XG geese. To clarify the potential regulatory network affected by crossbreeding and sex, we used RNA-seq and nontargeted metabolomics to detect changes in male and female goose breast muscle. The transcriptome results showed that there were 534, 323, 297, and 492 differently expressed genes (DEGs) among the 4 comparison groups (XG-Female vs. F2-Female, XG-Male vs. F2-Male, F2-Male vs. F2-Female, and XG-Male vs. XG-Female, respectively) that were mainly related to muscle growth and development and fatty acid metabolism pathways. A total of 141 significantly differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) were enriched in serine and threonine, propionate, and pyruvate metabolism. Finally, we comprehensively analyzed the metabolome and transcriptome data and found that many DEGs and DAMs played crucial roles in lipid metabolism and muscle growth and development. In summary, crossbreeding can improve XG goose production performance and affect breast muscle gene expression and metabolites in both female and male geese.

Adaptive flyway management of superabundant geese is emerging as a strategy to reduce damage to agricultural crops and other ecosystem disservices, while also ensuring sustainable use and conservation objectives. Given the calls for intensified hunting as part of flyway management in Europe, we need to increase the understanding of structural, situational, and psychological factors important for goose hunting among hunters. Our survey data, retrieved in southern Sweden, showed a higher potential to intensify hunting among goose hunters than other hunters. In response to hypothetical policy instruments (including regulations, collaborative, and others), hunters declared a minor increase in their intention to hunt geese, with the greatest expected increase among goose hunters should the hunting season be extended. Situational factors (e.g., access to hunting grounds) were associated with goose hunting (frequency, bag size, and intention to increase hunting). In addition, controlled motivation (derived from external pressures or to avoid guilt) and more importantly autonomous motivation (due to hunting being enjoyable or valuable) were along with goose hunter identity positively associated with goose hunting. Hunters' involvement in flyway management may be encouraged by using policy instruments to remove situational barriers and facilitate their autonomous motivation.

Quantifying relationships between animal behavior and habitat use is essential to understanding animal decision-making. High-resolution location and acceleration data allows unprecedented insights into animal movement and behavior. These data types allow researchers to study the complex linkages between behavioral plasticity and habitat distribution. We used a novel Markov model in a Bayesian framework to quantify the influence of behavioral state frequencies and environmental variables on transitions among landcover types through joint use of location and tri-axial accelerometer data. Data were collected from 56 greater white-fronted geese (Anser albifrons frontalis) across seven ecologically distinct winter regions over two years in midcontinent North America. We showed that goose decision-making varied across landcover types, ecoregions, and abiotic conditions, and was influenced by behavior. We found that time spent in specific behaviors explained variation in the probability of transitioning among habitats, revealing unique behavioral responses from geese among different habitats. Combining GPS and acceleration data allowed unique study of potential influences of an ongoing large-scale range shift in the wintering distribution of a migratory bird across midcontinent North America. We anticipate that behavioral adaptations among variable landscapes is a likely mechanism explaining goose use of highly variable ecosystems during winter in ways which optimize their persistence.

Although PRL-PRLR signalling plays important roles in regulating avian reproduction, there is a paucity of information regarding the functional significance of PRLR in goose ovarian follicle development.2. The full-length 2,496 bp coding sequence of PRLR was obtained from Sichuan White goose (Anser cygnoides) for the first time and was seen to encode a polypeptide containing 831 amino acids. Goose PRLR shares similar sequence characteristics and conserved functional domains to other avian species and was phylogenetically clustered into the avian clade.3. The qPCR results suggested that the mRNA levels of PRLR significantly increased in primary follicles during weeks 3 to 4 of age and were higher in secondary- than in primordial follicles at week 5 post-hatching, which suggested that the PRLR-mediated signalling could be involved in regulation of early folliculogenesis.4. The PRLR mRNA was expressed at the highest levels in the prehierarchical 8-10 mm granulosa layers throughout goose ovarian follicle development, indicating a role for PRLR in the process of follicle selection.5. PRLR mRNA was differentially expressed in the three cohorts of in vitro cultured granulosa cells harvested from different sized goose ovarian follicles, which suggested that PRLR was involved in regulating granulosa cell functions depending on the stage of follicle development. These data provide novel insights into the role of PRLR during goose ovarian follicle development, although the underlying mechanisms await further investigations.

Arctic-nesting geese face energetic challenges during spring migration, including ecological barriers and weather conditions (e.g., precipitation and temperature), which in long-lived species can lead to a trade-off to defer reproduction in favor of greater survival. We used GPS location and acceleration data collected from 35 greater white-fronted geese of the North American midcontinent and Greenland populations at spring migration stopovers, and novel applications of Bayesian dynamic linear models to test daily effects of minimum temperature and precipitation on energy expenditure (i.e., overall dynamic body acceleration, ODBA) and proportion of time spent feeding (PTF), then examined the daily and additive importance of ODBA and PTF on probability of breeding deferral using stochastic antecedent models. We expected distinct responses in behavior and probability of breeding deferral between and within populations due to differences in stopover area availability. Time-varying coefficients of weather conditions were variable between ODBA and PTF, and often did not show consistent patterns among birds, indicating plasticity in how individuals respond to conditions. An increase in antecedent ODBA was associated with a slightly increased probability of deferral in midcontinent geese but not Greenland geese. Probability of deferral decreased with increased PTF in both populations. We did not detect any differentially important time periods. These results suggest either that movements and behavior throughout spring migration do not explain breeding deferral or that ecological linkages between bird decisions during spring and subsequent breeding deferral were different between populations and across migration but occurred at different time scales than those we examined.

The objective of this study was to investigate the changes of the fatty acid in breast (BM) and leg (LM) muscles from 17-wk-old female White Koluda geese packaged in a vacuum and stored in freezing conditions at -20°C. During 17 weeks, the geese were fed ad libitum on the same complete feed. The samples (18 LM and 18 BM) from the right part of the carcasses were stored for 30, 90, 80, 270, and 365 d. The changes in the fatty acid profile were established by gas chromatography. In this work, there were also calculated lipid profile indicators such as Σ PUFA n-6/Σ PUFA n-3, Σ UFA/Σ SFA, and Σ PUFA/Σ SFA. Time of frozen storage affected the decrease in Σ SFA, Σ MUFA, and Σ PUFA of BM and LM. The statistical analysis of the obtained data shows that the type of muscle also generally affected the fatty acid profile. The BM are characterized higher proportion of Σ SFA, and the LM are defined as containing more Σ MUFA and Σ PUFA. Extending frozen storage time caused only the deterioration of Σ PUFA n-6/Σ PUFA n-3. The Σ PUFA n-6/Σ PUFA n-3 were the highest in BM and LM on the 365th day of storage. Although the Σ PUFA n-6/Σ PUFA n-3 ratio in muscles stored for 180, 270, and 365 d was higher than the recommended values. The lipid profile indicators (Σ UFA/Σ SFA, and Σ PUFA/Σ SFA) were similar in raw meat and in all frozen storage samples. It means that frozen storage didn't affect this index and the BM and LM have the same quality from the dietary point of view. Leg muscles during frozen storage are characterized by higher Σ UFA/Σ SFA and Σ PUFA/Σ SFA than the breast muscles.

Previous research in our lab showed that 10% glucose, 10% fructose, and 10% sucrose can induce lipid deposition in goose fatty liver formation process more efficiently. However, whether the overfeeding diet supplement with sugar can affect the meat quality is unclear. The aim of this research was to estimate the meat quality of geese overfed with overfeeding diet adding with different types of sugar. The results indicated there were no significant differences in the diameter of muscle fiber, the muscle fiber density, pH0, pH24, the meat color, the cooking loss, the drip loss, the shear force and the dry matter in breast muscle and thigh muscle between corn flour groups and three sugars groups (P > 0.05). The crude fat content of breast muscle in fructose group was significantly higher than that in sucrose group (P < 0.05); the inosinic acid content of leg muscle in fructose group was significantly higher than that in the sucrose group (P < 0.05); the ratios of essential amino acids to total amino acids (EAA/TAA) in the breast muscle of maize flour group, fructose group, sucrose group and glucose group were 42%, 35%, 32% or 34%;57%, 64%, 64%, and 62%, respectively; the ratios of essential amino acids to total amino acids in leg muscle of maize flour group, fructose group, sucrose group and glucose group were 31%, 33%, 35%, and 34%, respectively. The contents of C16:1 and C18:1 n-9c in breast muscle in fructose group were significantly higher than that in sucrose group (P < 0.05). Compared with maize flour group, the contents of C18:0 and C20:0 were lower in leg muscle of sugar group (P < 0.05). Compared with the maize flour group, the activities of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX) in breast muscle were higher than those of sucrose group (P < 0.05), the total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) levels in breast muscle was higher than that of fructose group and sucrose group (P < 0.05). Cluster analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) showed that there was no difference in meat quality between maize flour and sugar group. In conclusion, the overfeeding with maize flour supplement with 10% sugar had no evident influence on the meat quality.

This study sought to understand the regulation mechanism of OPN5 through the TSH-DIO2/DIO3 pathway mediated photoperiod on the breeding activity of short-day breeding birds. In this study, the reproductive activity of Magang goose was regulated by artificial light, and the reproductive activity of the ganders were determined according to the daily laying rate of female geese. The testicular development and the serum reproductive hormone concentrations of ganders were measured during the reproductive period (d 0), the reproductive degeneration period (d 13 and 27) and the resting period (d 45). The mRNA and protein expression patterns of OPN5, the HPG axis reproductive genes, and TSH-DIO2/DIO3 pathway related genes were examined. Results showed that the laying rate of geese and the gonadal indices (GSI) decreased gradually after the photoperiod increased. Histological observation found that the spermatogenic function of the testis was normal on d 0 and 13, while degeneration occurred by d 27 and 45. Serum testosterone, FSH, and LH concentration showed a slight increase on d 13, followed by a sharp decrease on d 27 and 45 (P < 0.01), while PRL concentrations were low on d 0 and 13, and increased rapidly on d 27 and 45 (P < 0.01).The expression pattern of GnRH, FSH, LH, and THRß mRNA were similar, with high levels on d 0 and 13 and a decreasing trend on d 27 and 45 (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01); and GnRHR mRNA levels were higher on d 13 (P < 0.05), but then had decreased by d 27 and 45 (P < 0.01). The expression pattern of GnIH and GnIHR was similar, which was opposite to that of GnRHR. VIP, PRL, and PRLR increased gradually and peaked on d 45 (P < 0.01). The expression trend of TRH, TSHß, and DIO2 was similar to that of GnRHR, and the expression abundance increased on d 13, and then decreased on d 27 and 45. GnRH protein expression was significantly higher than during the other 3 periods (P < 0.01) while the GnIH protein levels were extremely low on d 0, had gradually increased by d 13, and significantly increased by d 27 and 45 (P < 0.01). The protein expression trends of THR and DIO2 were similar to that of GNIH. DIO3 protein expression was low on d 0 and 13, and increased by d 27 and 45. These results suggest that when the photoperiod increased, the hypothalamus OPN5 gene and protein were upregulated and the pituitary TSHß, TSHR, and hypothalamus THRß, TRH, and DIO2 were downregulated, and thus the reproductive activity of geese was inhibited.

Zhedong white goose (Anser cygnoides) is one of the most important domesticated avian species and of high economic value in China. It has strong broody behavior, which leads to shortened egg-laying cycle, thus negatively impacting goose farming. In our previous studies, a link was established between reactive oxygen species (ROS) originated from mitochondrial activity and broodiness in geese. However, the role of mitochondria in the regulation of broodiness in geese remained unexplored. Herein, the transition from large white follicles to small yellow follicles was restrained in geese at the broody stage. Moreover, the frequency of abnormal mitochondria was increased in granulosa cells of broody follicles. Furthermore, mitochondrial dysfunction in granulosa cells of geese follicles is possibly regulated by mitochondria-related proteins including autophagy- and apoptosis-related proteins. Our results suggest that increased dysfunctional mitochondria in granulosa cells in the follicles of Zhedong white geese are involved in the regulation of broodiness. The present study contributes to expand the knowledge on goose broodiness and provides an important reference for the control of broodiness in avian species.
