Intraocular gnathostomiasis: A rare case report from Central India.

We report the first case of intraocular gnathostomiasis from Central India. A 29-year-old male from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, presented with pain and redness of the right eye since 1 month. Slit lamp examination revealed anterior uveitis, multiple iris atrophic patches, and a live worm hooked on iris. The worm was removed through a small sclerocorneal tunnel. Microscopy confirmed Gnathostoma spinigerum. The patient was treated with oral albendazole and steroids. The case is reported because of its rarity.

First reported case of intraocular Gnathostoma spinigerum in Cambodia.

A live intraocular nematode was identified from a 37 year-old man presented with iritis, pain, redness, lacrimation, swelling, vision loss and intermittent blindness during many hours per day of the left eye. By using slit lamp examination, a worm was removed from iris in an ophthalmology outpatient department setting and sent to the Medical Microbiology Laboratory, Institut Pasteur du Cambodge. Gnathostoma spinigerum was identified, based on its typical morphology via microscopic examination. Based on our diagnosis, the patient was treated by oral albendazole and responded well to this therapy.

[A case of relapsing iridocyclitis in tropical malaria]. / Sluchai retsidiviruiushchego iridotsiklita pri tropicheskoi maliarii.

An African student developed bilateral relapsing iridocyclitis with increased intraocular pressure. General examinations and parasitological studies revealed tropical malaria. Etiotropic and local therapy normalized intraocular pressure and improved vision acuity of both eyes. This case should be borne in mind by general practitioners as a possibility of transportation of various tropical diseases.

Immunopathology of the uveitis in canine leishmaniasis.

Particular immunopathological features and their effects on the vascular permeability of different ocular structures were analysed in two dogs naturally infected by Leishmania infantum. The existence of specific anti-Leishmania immunoglobulin G (IgG) in the aqueous humour was confirmed by the ELISA technique. There was no correlation between antibody levels in the aqueous humour and the related serum. The histopathological study of the eyes showed the existence of lesions in various ocular structures. The ciliary processes, ciliary body, sclerocorneal limbus, iris and lacrimal duct showed intense inflammatory zones with lymphocyte infiltrates, plasmatic cells and macrophages with amastigote forms of Leishmania. In addition vasculitis with dilation and thrombi were also detected in both cases, with consequent oedema and hyalinization. The immunohistochemistry analysis revealed the presence of granular and diffuse IgG deposits in the ciliary body, ciliary processes, sclerocorneal limbus and iris. Furthermore, numerous thrombosed vessels were observed in the sclerocorneal zone and iris. Complement 3 (C3) fraction deposits were not present in the ocular structures. The present data suggest that the ocular lesions may have an immunopathological origin.

Ascaridoid larva (Nematoda) from the eye of a child in Uganda.

A nematode measuring approximately 1.25 mm by 42 micron, excised in a granuloma from the eye of a child in East Africa, was identified as a third-stage ascaridoid larva of a type having no ventriculus or cecum and bearing conspicuous lateral alae.

Toxocara-specific antibody in the serum and aqueous humor of a patient with presumed ocular and visceral toxocariasis.

Rarely have concurrent ocular and systemic toxocariasis been reported in the literature. We describe a patient with serologically proven visceral toxocariasis who had a granulomatous lesion in the iris, small rod-like lesions in the retina, and in whom Toxocara-specific antibodies were also demonstrated in the aqueous humor. Two older siblings of this patient also had demonstrable serum antibody to Toxocara. The ocular manifestations resolved rapidly with corticosteroid and thiabendazole therapy and the initial leucocytosis, hepatomegaly, and elevated IgM level were normal at 3.5 months. These changes might be attributed to either the thiabendazole and prednisone therapy or to the natural history of this disease.
